DURING the past few years, a considerable tonnage of ilmenite has been produced as a byproduct of a monazite dredging operation and stockpiled near Boise, Idaho. This ilmenite has not been marketed because of the long distance from ilmenite-consuming areas and its comparatively low TiO2 content. Production of monazite from the alluvial sand deposits of Idaho is a mar- ginal venture when it is the only marketable product, and it will be necessary to establish a byproduct market before the operation becomes economically stable. Early in 1954, the Bureau of Mines Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory at Albany, Ore., conducted a series of tests which demonstrated that arc furnace smelting could be utilized to produce commercial quality pig iron and a high titanium content slag from these ilmenites. Additional studies showed that the slag chlorinated readily to produce a satisfactory yield of TiCl4. The investigation was carried out by two research teams. C.).-The activities of the Petroleum and Gas Committee for the half year have brought gratifying results, as exemplified by 14 technical papers, brim full of novel and attractive issues in which we are all keenly interested. I beg to extend my hearty thanks to all members and authors who have responded to my appeal, and to all those who have endeavored to meet the growing demand which has resulted in the augmented production of this commodity which is so essential for the Nation's welfare, comfort and safety. As you well know, within the last few years, petroleum and its products have been used for numerous and novel purposes, so that we have become accustomed to their use in thousands of activities, and pleasures as well, but we should also note that we have been wasting and misusing these wonderful products, apparently believing that their sources are inexhaustible.

The zinc-lead blast furnace process has been installed by two smelters in Japan. In 1966 a unit was commissioned at Harima in Hyogo prefecture by Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. Ltd. and in 1969 a consortium of other Japanese zinc and lead smelters completed their unit at Hachinohe in Aomori prefecture, managed by Mitsui Mining & Smelting Go. Ltd. , the major shareholders. The special characteristics of these two plants are described with particular emphasis on their location and operation. Reference is also made to the processing of a wide range of raw materials, including residues from other processes. Both plants pay scrupulous attention to plant and environmental hygiene to meet the high standards set by the local prefectural governments; the ways in which this has been achieved are discussed. General performance data on each furnace is included, showing that this pyrometallurgical process is supplying 16% of Japan's zinc and refined lead consumption. Earth bottom thickeners are generally considered to be the lowest cost solution for thickener bottom construction presently available to the mining industry. In addition to the capital cost advantage, these basins have proven to be watertight structures providing trouble-free operation for indefinite periods of time. During the past 15 years, some 18 of these thickeners have entered service with no particular problems encountered in porphyry copper operations, counter-current decantation in a gold cyanide plant, and other similar applications in mineral processing. In the course of this work, technological advances have been realized in the procedures for engineering and construction of these units to assure watertight basins and achieve all possible economies in construction.

THE Northwestern Pennsylvania Oil Producers Association and the United States Geological Survey have cooperated in conducting a pre-liminary study of the character of the flood waters, the relationship of changes in concentration of the salts dissolved in these waters to ultimate flood-oil production, and the original association of oil and water in the Bradford field. Bradford has long been recognized as a dry-sand field. As a matter of fact, there had been little information available on the oil-field waters of northern Pennsylvania until this investigation was undertaken. THE BRADFORD SAND Practically all of the oil produced in the Bradford field comes from one horizon, generally known as the Third, or Bradford, sand. Originally, it was believed that the Bradford sand was equivalent to the Third sand of Venango County, Pennsylvania and the name "Third" unfortunately still persists, although shortly after the discovery of the Bradford pool Carll1 determined that there was a stratigraphic interval of approximately ;000 ft. between the two horizons. The Bradford sand, although varying considerably in thickness and lithology within local areas, is persistent throughout the field. It is of marine origin and, upon both paleontologi-cal and stratigraphic evidence, is regarded as a basal member of the Chemung formation.

This paper presents some of the results of a rock mechanics instrumentation program designed for, and implemented at. longwall panel 4N at the York Canyon Mine near Raton, New Mexico. The objective of this particular instrumentation program was to determine the response of the rock mass to longwall mining of a thick coal seam utilizing shield-type supports. Measurements were made in the rock along the ground surface, above the coal seam, in the coal seam, and immediately below the coal seam. Longwall test panel 4N had a total developed length of 762 m (2500 ft) and a face width of 168 m (550 ft), [Fig. 1]. The seam mining height in the panel area was approximately 3 m (10 ft). The average depth of overburden above the panel is 107 m (350 ft) although it ranges from 73-134 m (240-440 ft). Roof support at the face was provided by 116 Hemscheidt 320 HSL shields. These shield-type supports weigh 11.4 metric tons each.

Marine phosphorite deposits occur in Braxil, in the Bambui Group of late Precambrian or Early Cambrian age. The phosphorite is laminated, isoclinally folded, and is composed of black, elongated apatite pellets and quartz grains cemented by quartz and muscovite. Abundant, narrow quartz veinlets cut through the .rock at right angles to the elongation direction of the pellets. The phosphorite is 0 to 80 m thick and contains 5 to 30 percent P2O5. The deposit is elongate towards the northeast, and the central, thickest, and richest part is bounded by faults. Measured reserves are about 250 million tons that average a bout 13 % P205. Preliminary testing indicates that grinding, scrubbing, and desliming will produce a material usable for fertilizer manufacture at a cost competitive with imported phosphate fertilizers.

THE caving system of mining is that method of removing the ore from an underground body in which the top is first attacked and mined out and the capping, or roof, as the case may be, is allowed to fall in or "cave" and fill the space formerly occupied by the mined ore. It is applicable, generally, to large orebodies where the ore is relatively soft. We may say, within moderate limits, that when ore is removed the surrounding ground either caves in or remains open. For example, in mines like the Lake Superior amygda-loid copper mines, when the lode is removed there is left a void which remains open for many years; on the con-trary, mining a Lake Superior soft hematite ore, however carefully it may be done, always produces a caving of the surrounding rocks. We may say, with propriety, therefore, that the caving system is applicable to that type of ore deposit in which the surrounding rock readily caves. Another factor which governs the use of the caving system is the value of the ore itself. Admittedly, any form of caving will not extract 100 per cent. of the ore, and in the case of a very rich orebody it is often desirable to get out every pound of the ore with as little dilution as possible. Under these conditions, some other method of mining, such as that by square sets and filling, is indicated and should be followed. We may say, however, that, looking at it broadly, in the United States the caving system of mining is generally used for the removal of soft hematite and for the so-called "porphyry" coppers. In both cases this method is used where open-pit mining is not possible.

THE requirements of the standard specifications under which Portland cement is sold have materially increased within the past 10 years, but practically all companies are now furnishing cement better than these requirements; in some cases exceeding them by nearly 100 per cent. From a sales standpoint, it is desirable to have a product that is uniform to a high degree and free from occasional quality troubles. A failure in quality, even if it affects only a few hundred barrels out of a yearly output of a million or more, is apt to be talked about in the trade and to affect the salability of the entire output. For these reasons, there has recently been great activity along the lines of quality control and improvement; and some of the most interesting problems of the industry are in this field. From the manufacturing standpoint, the quality of cement is chiefly a matter of uniform and proper chemical composition of the raw mix fed to the kilns plus proper burning in the kilns; the fineness to which the cement is ground, the proportions of gypsum, the method of seasoning, and the like are contributory factors. Uniform chemical composition of the raw mix has been one of the most difficult problems to solve. Most plants will use from 1000 to 3000 tons of rock per day and in but few cases is this material as it lies in the quarry even approximately uniform in composition. The problem, then, is to quarry and mix this raw material in such a manner that every handful passing through the kilns will have practically the same analysis as every other handful. To accomplish this purpose there are two methods of preparation: the wet process and the dry.

1. Haulage Tests on Coal-mine Cars THE haulage of coal from the face to the tipple is an important enough link in the production of coal to deserve its full share of study and care. In order to obtain a better understanding of mine haulage conditions, a series of tests and investigations has been made which promises to hasten the improvement of present conditions. For hauling coal through the mine and on the surface, locomotives are required, the size and power consumption of which depend on the resistance to motion offered by the mine cars. This resistance is principally caused by gravity and hearing friction. The effect of gravity can be reduced to a minimum by a suitable layout of the haulageways; that is, by arranging the grades in favor of the loaded trips, and by fixing the percentage of grade to that value which gives the lowest power consumption for loaded and empty trains. The bearing friction, which is considerably greater than is generally realized, can be easily reduced to a negligible quantity by the installation of a suitable anti-friction bearing that will stand the rough use and abuse of coal-mine service. The present investigation will deal with flexible roller bearings in comparison with ordinary plain bearings.

AN entirely new type of classifier is being put on the market by The Dorr Co., following three years of development and the experimental use of thirty machines of the improvement design in various parts of the world. It is known as the Multizone classifier. Compared with the older type the lower or overflow end has been decked over and is surmounted by one or more circular overflow columns. Feed is introduced near the middle of the machine and passes downward and under a vertical baffle, then along the underside of the deck to the base of the overflow columns. T is unfortunate that the word "economics" has -¦¦ come to mean, in the minds of many people, a sort of half-baked mixture of New Deal philosophy and bookkeeping. It may mean anything from mine cost keeping to the theory of gold as a monetary standard. As applied to the industrial mineral industries as a whole it means to us an integrated study of all of the technical, geographical, market, financial, and other factors which determine whether or not a given enterprise has a sound chance of making a business success. Of course it is impossible to generalize too freely in this large group of industries which go to make up the nonmetallic minerals. This group includes such dissimilar products as crushed stone and ca- pacitor mica, phosphate rock and spinning fiber asbestos, roofing granules and potash salts, borate minerals and monumental granite. Yet in many respects their economic problems are similar and, at the same time, far different from those of the metals and of petroleum and coal. These basic differences are almost never recognized by people outside the industries and are rarely appreciated even by metal mining engineers. But in many instances these economic factors are fully as important as, if not more important than, technologic problems. It has been a long fight to get an intelligent and wide-spread appreciation of sound technology in the nonmetallic mineral industries. The importance of the economic side of the problem has yet to be widely understood and appreciated. The problem was outlined in considerable detail by one of the authors some 18 years ago in a long series of articles* and he has since prepared numerous talks

The two earlier papers in this series1,2 presented data on the rate of diffusion of carbon and of manganese in gamma iron. Apart from their scientific interest, these data are needed chiefly in order to treat data on carburization, on rate of formation of pearlite, and on rate of austenit-izing in a quantitative way.1'2'9'10 In the present investigation rates of diffusion of nickel in ?-Fe over wide temperature and concentration ranges have been determined, and the effects of carbon, of im- purities, and of grain size on these rates have been studied. Claussen,3 using the data of Fry,4 has calculated the diffusion coefficient of nickel in y-Fe as 9.2 X 10-11 sq. cm. per sec. at 1200ºC., but had no data from which to calculate the variation of D with concentration, temperature, and percentage of carbon. Method and Materials Method.—Nickel was diffused along the axis of a cylindrical specimen across a concentration gradient, concentration-penetration curves were determined and D values calculated from Grube or Matano solutions.5 Details of the method are given

In every chemical reaction heat is either developed or absorbed, and this plus or minus heat of formation is as definite in quantity as the weights of the reacting elements. In this paper I shall show that each chemical element and each chemical radical has its own definite heat-valency,—a fact which, so far as I know, has hitherto escaped the attention of investigators, but, I feel sure, will be admitted after the demonstration here given, and may lead to some practical conclusions of value. When Berthelotys " law of maximum work " was found to have so many inexplicable exceptions, the pendulum of a scientific theory swung away from a recognition of the truth underlying that proposition; and this reaction went so far that not only has thermal chemistry been relatively neglected by recent investigators, but it is not uncommon now to find textbooks on physical chemistry which practically ignore all that Thomsen, Berthelot and others have done. To this temporary tendency of thought I attribute the failure to recognize the principles herein announced and explained. Not long ago, while studying tables of the formation-heat of various salts, I noticed that in this respect all potassium salts in solution differ from the corresponding sodium salts by 9.3 cal.1 I found also that similar differences exist between other salts, not only when the basic radical is varied, while the acid radical remains constant, but also when the acid radical is the variable. Thus chlorine salts in solution differ from bromine salts in this respect by 10.9 cal. Upon further study, I found that Thomsen had noted similar constant differences, but, so far as I can ascertain, he appears to have attached no great significance thereto.

The Chitina mining district of Alaska is located at the headwaters of the Chitina and Copper Rivers. At present, the only producing mining properties are the mines of the Kennecott Copper Corpn. and the Mother Lode Coalition Co., which are situated 196 miles from Cordova, the port of entry. The first claims, later acquired by the Kennecott Mines Co. and afterwards transferred to the Kennecott Copper Corpn., were discovered in 1900. The Copper River & Northwestern Ry., which connects the mines with tide water at Cordova, was completed in the spring of 1911. Contemporary with the construction of the railroad, aerial tram equipment was brought to the mines by pack train and a tramway, 3 miles long, connecting Bonanza mine with the proposed railroad terminal, was finished, enabling shipments of high-grade ore to be made immediately the railroad was completed. A mill to treat the lower grade ore was begun the same year. The Kennecott company's holdings consist of 111 mineral claims. The Mother Lode Coalition Mines Co., which is controlled by the Kennecott Copper Corpn., owns 73 claims adjoining the Kennecott holdings. All data on operations and geology refer equally well to the Mother Lode property. Geology The general geology of the district has been covered by the U. S. Geological Survey1 and the geological features of the mines have been carefully studied by A. M. Bateman, in his capacity as consulting geologist to the company.2

NO one who has visited our Western mining districts, and studied the economical part of the beneficiation of the ores occurring all over that vast extent of country, can underrate the high importance of the above subject. By far the larger number of the districts which contain smelting ores, i. e., argentiferous and auriferous lead, or copper ores, are situated in the Great Basin, that great plateau between the Rocky Mountains on the east, and the Sierra Nevada on the west, almost the whole of which is comprised at present in the boundaries of Nevada, Utah, and part of Arizona. This region is essentially a barren country. The extreme dryness of the atmosphere permits but a scanty vegetation in the plains; and even in the detached mountain-chains running through it-generally from N. to S., or from N. W. to S. E.-there are no trees found except dwarfed pines and mahogany, at the head of sheltered ravines, and a few cottonwoods and willows, which fringe the insignificant streams, before the water sinks in the arid plains. Nearly all the mountain-chains in this region are rich in silver ores. That class of these ores which is adapted to amalgamation, and rich in silver, has been worked with profit for more than ten years. But before the advent of the transcontinental railways, mining was restricted to these ores alone, and the consumption f fuel could be met with the scanty supply of forest trees in the immediate vicinity of the mining districts. Since, however, the Union and Central Pacific Railroads have brought the Great Basin nearer to the commercial centres of the East and the Pacific coast, thus reducing the expenses of freight and labor materially, other silver deposits, containing poorer ores in greater abundance, have been rapidly taken

in Cast-Iron. It has been generally accepted that the presence of silicon in cast-iron leads to the formation of graphite; and this has been explained by saying that the silicon lowers the solvent power of iron for carbon at and somewhat below the freezing-point, so that, in the presence of silicon, the iron is unable to retain in solution or combination the whole of the carbon with which it has united while molten, and therefore expels the excess of carbon in the form of graphite, during and immediately after solidification. Probably the best way to study this question would be to examine pure cast-irons, i.e., those containing nothing but iron, carbon and silicon, which at the same time should have been saturated with carbon when molten. But the data for such a study are not at hand; so we must turn to commercial pig-irons as they are made in the blast-furnace, and before their composition has been changed by remelting. Much evidence has been offered of late, tending to oppose the theory of the action of silicon above set forth. Some of this evidence will be examined here. 1. Mr. Bachman's Results. In particular, Mr. F. E. Bachman† has published a collection of analyses of cast-iron, in which the proportion of graphite at first appears to be nearly independent of the proportion of silicon present. The perusal of Mr. Willard P. Ward's " Notes on the Behavior of Manganese to Carbon," presented at the Washington meeting of the Institute in February, 1882, has suggested further reflections on the same general topic, and has led to the preparation of the present paper. The same observation that Mr. Ward has put on record in his "Notes" was also made by myself at about the same time (in August, 1875), and under almost the same conditions. From a blast-furnace that was very hot, as was the furnace mentioned by Mr. Ward, I obtained a pig-iron containing about fifteen per cent. of manganese, gray in color, and very tough. It could be pulverized, but could not be cut with the chisel. I analyzed this iron and found that it contained, as I had suspected,a large amount of silicon. From this fact I drew the conclusion that the silicon had deprived the manganese of its power of dissolving carbon, since the latter, instead of occurring in the pig in combillation, appeared as graphitic carbon. I thus saw reproduced on a large scale, and demonstrated in a visible way, the property that Colonel Caron, a French scientist, had discovered in silicon,—the property of obstructing the process of hardening in steels by keeping the carbon in the graphitic condition. An attentive study of the conditions under which the phenomenon observed by Mr. Ward takes place led me to go back to operations of synthesis, and to make as I wanted them pig-irons containing varying quantities of silicon, manganese, and carbon. An iron, thus prepared, was intended to serve me as a chemical reagent in the production of steels cast without blow-holes, such as my lamented friend, Mr. A. L. Holley, has introduced and made known to the United States. Longwall mining is the term used for the underground extraction of a wide and deep panel of coal. Such a panel may be blocked out by one or more entries on either side ("head" and "tail") of a longwall face. If all the entries are pre-driven, the panel extraction is termed longwall retreat mining. With one exception, all the longwall faces in the United States are of this type.1 Prior to the general decline in the rates of production with Continuous Miners, the development of the multiple entries generally kept ahead of the longwall extraction rate. This is no longer the case: longwall extraction rates far exceed the rate of development. In addition to this problem, in newly established mines, the development of a haulage and bleeder system based on multiple entries results in a lead-time of three years or more before longwall mining can be applied.
