COUNTERCURRENT staged processes involving chemical reactions between solid and gas streams are becoming more common. Such operations are generally carried out in a series of fluidized beds with each bed acting as a stage. Fig. 1 is a schematic illustration of a series of stages located in a single column, with a solid stream moving down through this column from stage to stage counter to a rising gas stream. The reduction of iron oxides with hydrogen and carbon monoxide is one of the reactions which can be advantageously carried out in such a countercurrent system. Three porphyry copper districts in southern Arizona are partly overlain by post-ore fanglomerates with certain physical and petrologic characteristics which define a distinct and significant class of rock. These units are the Locomotive fanglomerate at Ajo, the Helmet fanglomerate at Twin Buttes-Mission-Pima, and the Cloudburst formation at San Manuel- Kalamazoo, herein termed “Locomotive-type fanglomerates.” Post-ore units at Poston Butte and Lakeshore, Ariz., and Sar Chesmeh, Iran, also appear to fit this class. Locomotive-type fanglomerates may be genetically related to porphyry copper deposits as subsequent products of differentiation, volcanism, uplift, and sedimentation in short-lived basins of limited areal extent. These units are sufficiently distinct to be utilized as exploration guides for porphyry copper deposits in the Southwestern U.S., northern Mexico, and elsewhere.

The Connellsville coal-field is a separate strip of the upper coal measures, flanking the Chestnut Ridge along its western side. It extends from a point a few miles south of Uniontown, in Fayette County, following a northeasterly course parallel to the trend of Chestnut Ridge, through Fayette and Westmoreland counties, with its terminal prongs resting 011 the southern portion of Indiana County, north of the town of Blairsville. This belt of coking coal will average about three miles in width and over sixty miles in length, affording nearly, if not quite, two hundred square miles of this large coal-bed.

SOME of the outstanding features of petroleum production in Illinois during 1923 were: (1) Sustained production from the older wells, due to cleaning and deepening; (2) good results from new drilling in a few localities; (3) large percentage of dry holes, many of which were ill advised tests, with a resulting high cost of the new production; (4) decrease in the number of productive wells in the state; (5) low average price of crude petroleum, a serious factor over the entire country. FIG. 1.-ANNUAL TOTALS OF ILLINOIS PRODUCTION. The total production of Illinois for 1923 was 8,710,000 bbl.,1 a decrease of 7.2 per cent. from that of 1922. Of this amount, it is estimated that about 8,500,000 bbl. were produced by old wells, many of which had been cleaned and deepened somewhat, and approximately 210,000 bbl. were obtained from the new wells drilled during the year. About 95 per cent. of the oil comes from the southeastern field in Clark, Crawford, and Lawrence Counties, where production is almost entirely from Pennsylvanian and Mississippian rocks. Extensions of the productive area were made in Clark, Wabash, Marion, and Jackson Counties. Some important gas development has been accomplished near Jacksonville, in Morgan County, and at Gillespie, in Macoupin County.

BefoRe the Drake well on Watson Flats below Titusville, Pa, inaugurated the modern petroleum industry on Aug. 28, 1859, a considerable industry, based on the manufacture of mineral oils through the destructive distillation at relatively low temperatures (750' to 800' F.) of cannel coals and shales in closed, air-tight retorts, had already sprung up in Europe and America because of the increasing cost of animal and vegetable oils and fats and the growing demand for illuminating and lubricating oils. In 1860, eight out of 55 such coal-oil companies in the United States had plants located in Pennsylvania.' Of these, the Lucesco Works, costing $120,000, situated near Kiskiminetas Junction, was the largest operating in the country. It was equipped with 10 revolving 2.5-ton retorts and 16 stills for rectifying the oil, each holding 2000 gal. The total output of crude oil was almost 6000 gal. per day.2 The discovery of an abundant supply of natural petroleum by the Drake and other wells stopped the distillation of coal oil in America. Most of the smaller plants were closed and others were converted into petroleum refineries. At present, in spite of the temporary over-production of petroleum, the coal and oil-shale carbonization industries are again attracting the attention of far-sighted oil companies who realize that the gradual exhaustion of the American petrol-

THE purpose of this paper is to present briefly a description of some of the special methods of separation or concentration, either singly or in combination with others, and to give certain operating data and examples. Explanation of the usual methods of large-production mill treatment, such as flotation or wet tabling, or of chemically treating industrial minerals, is not included in the scope of this paper, although one of these methods might be, in certain instances, augmented by one or more of the special methods that will be enumerated herein. Description of these special methods will be centered on magnetic separators, electro- static separators and air flotation or air tables. MAGNETIC SEPERATORS In general, separating is achieved by exerting upon a particle some kind of force opposed to gravity, either directly or at an angle. For example, in the Wetherill or cross-belt type of magnetic separator some particles are lifted vertically from the others because they have been exposed to a force to which they respond more readily than particles of lesser magnetic susceptibility. Of course, there is a limitation to this vertical rise, for the particle must be of a high enough susceptibility to receive a magnetic force greater than the 980 dynes per gram of gravitational urge. To overcome this limitation, the induction type of magnetic separator was developed, so that it is only necessary to instill, say, 30 to 60 dynes per gram instead of the 980, to cause a deflection away from the vertical in falling, and that deflection can be used advantageously when falling by inserting a dividing knife-edge. The induction magnetic separator (Fig. 1) has become a fairly well known method of concentrating and purifying. The Ozark region occupies a large part of the southern half of Missouri, the northern portion of Arkansas and comparatively smalll areas in northeast Oklahoma, southwest Kansas, and southern Illinois. It is a roughly elliptical plateau which has been deeply dissected by stream erosion, and which slopes imperceptibly into the prairie regions to the north, east, and west, but which terminates rather abruptly along the Arkansas River on the south and Tertiary lowland to the southeast. The Boston Mountains extending for a distance of some 200 miles (321 km.) along the Arkansas River rise to an elevation of 2000 ft. (609 m.), forming the most prominent topographic feature of the region. The so-called St. Frangois Mountains in St. Frangois, Madison, and adjoining counties in southeast Missouri, form a prominent but more restricted topographic feature, the highest point rising to an elevation of 1800 ft. (548 m.). The remainder of the region is largely a plateau area varying from 800 to 1500 ft. (243 to 457 m.) in elevation. Stratigraphy The region is underlain chiefly by sedimentary formations, which outcrop in roughly concentric bands around a comparatively restricted area of igneous rocks in the St. Frangois Mountain district. Although located geographically near the eastern edge of the Osarks, the St. Frangois Mountains have apparently suffered the greatest orogenic movement and the lowest formations of the succession are exposed in their immediate vicinity. The various sedimentary formations of the region do not show any considerable metamorphism and have suffered little change since consolidation. With the exception of a few basic intrusions in Ste. Gene-vievg County and a pegmatite dike in Camden County, Missouri, there is no evidence of igneous action, since the first sedimentary beds were deposited.

THE study of the possibility of effecting a lower cost in the manu-facture of pig iron reveals the importance of the ever present question of slag chemistry and volume. Factors that determine slag chemistry and volume are the impurities in the ore available, the ash-sulphur content of the coke, and a flux material necessary to promote removal of sulphur. Of these, the ores present by far the major source of impurities and what may prove to be the lowest practical slag volume with desired chemistry in one locality may be considered low or high in some other center of iron manufacture. The Chicago district is not only blessed with ores of high quality, but with excellent coke and flux materials as well. It is the intent of this paper to discuss slag problems at the South Works only, where burdens consist of Mesabi ores, Michigan stone, and coke ranging from 7 to 9 per cent ash and containing an average of 0.57 per cent sulphur. Early in the development of modern blast-furnace practice, the con-sideration of slags was secondary to the many adjustments of mechanical difficulties, such as furnace lines, stock distribution, stove design for obtaining higher blast temperatures, improved chemical segregation and size of raw materials. Furnace operators, after making these improve-ments, turned their attention to the study of other refinements in practice, of which slag chemistry appeared to be the most important. It is only within the last two decades that operators have become familiar with the various aspects of slag compositions. The industry, while rather slow in its recognition, is indebted to such investigators as Rankin,1 Wright,1 Feild,2 Royster,2 McCaffery,3 Kinney,4 Holbrook,5 and Joseph5, whose researches concerning the elimination of sulphur within the blast furnace and the effect of slag composition upon melting point, viscosity, and desulphurizing power have established criteria for the selection of slags of the requisite quality.

THE Institute of Metals Division opened its series of meetings by a session* on lead, R. S. Dean be-ing in the chair and G. 0. Hiers acting as vice-chairman. A large and representative audience listened to the papers in the abstract and contributed an inter-esting and fruitful discussion. The main points of these papers and discussion are given below: In the absence of Carl E. Swartz, the summary and conclusions of his paper, "A Study of the Lead-Tin-Cadmium System with Reference to Their Use as Solders," were read. Swartz investigated a number of alloys in the lead-tin-cadmium system and prepared a diagram representing the solidification ranges of these alloys. He also made tensile strength tests of joints made with these alloys, and compared these with joints made with ordinary lead-tin solder. The tests showed solders containing cadmium were equally strong as the lead-tin series and that the cadmium alloys were suit-able in other respects for use as solders. In general, solders of the composition near to the ternary lead-tin-cadmium eutectic appeared to be the best for most soldering work although compositions widely differing are desirable for special purposes. The lead-tin-cad-mium solders are finding a market particularly in the fields requiring lower solidification temperatures than common solders. Mr. Darby opened the discussion and asked whether it was a fact that the lead-tin-cadmium solders were more useful than ordinary solders on galvanized and tin-plated sheet. C. Smith said he thought it to be a fact that galvanized sheet was more easily soldered by the lead-tin-cadmium solders than common lead-tin-solder. Continuing, Mr. Smith showed lantern slides of his own investigation of the thermal diagram and recommended the 70 per cent lead, 20 per cent cadmium, and 10 per cent tin for general employment. He thought the author did not differentiate between wetting and alloying and pointed out that wetting was more a ques-tion of the flux than the metal. In some cases a definite alloy was formed by soldering and in some no evidences of alloying were found. Illustrating the former case he showed slides and demonstrated that failures always took place longitudinal with the brittle compound alloy and transversely across the solder itself.

[ ] DISCUSSION J. L, SNOEK*-Stress-induced preferential diffusion in cubic body centered metals in the annealed state provides us with a powerful tool for determining the mobility of interstitially solved atoms as well as their location in the lattice and the exact nature of the distortion brought about in the lattice by their presence. Calculations given by D. Polder31 show that the distortion of the lattice, besides being proportional to the applied stress P, is also proportional to [VC, RT + xVCo] where T, V and Co are the temperature, molar volume of the solvent and molar concentration of the solute respectively and x is a constant describing the mutual interaction energy of the dissolved particles. This calculation obviously is no longer valid if x is negative and the abso¬lute value of xVCo surpasses that of RT. The lattice may then be expected to become tetragonal spontaneously. Such a spontaneous tetragonality seems to have been observed by W. Klemm and L, Grimm for the case of oxygen solved in vanadium.32 Measurements of the internal friction in cold worked iron containing carbon or nitrogen should provide us with information on the mobility as well as the preferential location of these particles in the iron lattice in the cold worked state. The work by T'ing-Sui Kê is a valuable contribution to this problem, The data obtained by T'ing Sui Kê and myself on cold worked samples of iron seem to indicate that carbon and nitrogen in these samples are found either in the normal (1/2 , 0, 0) interstices or in a new preferential position created by the cold working. The latter positions in my opinion can hardly by anything else but the edges of the dislocations. The observed larger distances of diffusion might be explained by assuming that the carbon atoms when freed from a certain dislocation by thermal agitation must diffuse over several atom distances before being caught in another dislocation. The theory however needs working out and no doubt will be much more complicated than the one valid for the annealed state. T'ING-SUI KÊ (author's reply)-It is highly encouraging to read the written discussion given by Dr, Snoek who initiated the theory of stress-induced preferential diffusion in cubic body centered metals in the annealed state, Since the presentation of this paper, the author has done more experimental work on this subject which seems to be able to settle several of the points raised by Dr. Snoek. It has been found that such stress-induced preferential diffusion occurs also in the solid solutions of carbon,33 oxygen,34 and nitrogen35 in tantalum which has a body centered cubic structure. IN recent years considerable publicity has been given to the problem of atmospheric pollution by fuel-burning equipment. Legislation has been stimulated and smoke ordinances have been enacted, the provisions of which show a definite trend toward stricter control of the emissions not only from the stacks of industrial fuel users but also from the chimneys of domestic consumers. As a result of war conditions, some slackening in the enforcement of these ordinances may be noted, but this is only a temporary expediency caused by the changes necessary in the distribution of the nation's fuel supplies and difficulties in securing the necessary equipment. Previous trends may be expected to continue in the postwar period. Largely because of the consumer demand for automatic heat, but partly because of the legislation against smoke emission, there has been a marked increase in the use of domestic underfeed stokers with the past decade. When correctly adjusted and operated, these units reduce the smoke emission materially, so that even the high-volatile bituminous coals may be burned with little or no emission of objectionable smoke. Unfortunately, however, the use of the domestic underfeed stoker introduces another problem; namely, fly-ash. PRODUCTION OF FLY-ASH The term "fly-ash" is a misnomer, since the fly material is generally a mixture of small carbonaceous particles varying from green coal to coke, and inorganic particles ranging from fluffy ash to small particles of fused clinker. For want of a more comprehensive name, however, the term fly-ash is used throughout this paper to include all the fly material. Even with hand-fired furnaces a certain amount of fly-ash is produced, which necessitates periodic cleaning of the boiler flues or furnace radiator, the smoke pipe, and occasionally the chimney itself. With stoker operations the amount of fly-ash is increased many fold, because of the higher velocity of air travel through the fuel bed. Frequently the amount of this fly-ash attains such proportions as to constitute a definite nuisance to the householder and his neighbors and distracts very materially from the otherwise automatic or semi-automatic performance of the stoker. MUCH has been learned about plastic deformation behavior in crystals through the use of dislocation and slip band etchants. Slip in nickel and nickel-base alloys has previously been revealed by various etching techniques.l-5 The techniques for nickel-base super-alloys4,5 were successful only in the Udimet 700 composition in specific heat-treated conditions. The objective of this work was to develop a more generally applicable slip-band etching procedure. The nominal compositions of the alloys used in this study are listed in Table I. The low carbon Mar-M2OO alloy referred to in the text is the same as listed in Table I with the exception that the carbon content is less than 100 ppm. Mar-M200 and Udimet 700 were solutionized at 2250" and 2150°F, respectively. The aging treatment for both cast alloys was 32 hr at 1600°F and for wrought Udimet 700 was 4 hr at 1975"F, 24 hr at 1550°F, and 16 hr at 1400°F. The new slip-band etching technique consists of a chemical etch followed by a short electropolish, Table 11. Fig. l(a) shows the best result obtained on an internal section of a plastically deformed single crystal of Mar-M2OO when using a conventional slip-band etching procedure which consists of electropolishing followed by etching. Ghostlike traces corresponding to planar slip bands are observed, but the contrast between the bands and the background is weak. Fig. l(b) shows the same field using the new slip-band etching technique. After the etching step of this technique, the same ghostlike traces of Fig. l(a) are observed, but the subsequent electropolishing accentuates the slip bands and the subgrain boundaries while the rest of the matrix is being polished. Longer electropolishing obliterates the slip bands. The new slip-band etching technique makes use of the etchants and electrolytes that are normally used for a given material. Because of this, it should be possible to slip-band etch other nickel-base superal-loys by using existing etchants and electrolytes for a material and following the procedures outlined in the "Comments" section of Table 11. In August, 1911, I read a paper before the Lake Superior Mining Institute1 on surveying and sampling diamond-drill holes. The present paper gives a more thorough descriptiou of these methods, together with a few changes and notes suggested by further experience. Since August, 1911, the methods, used constantly by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., have been developed to a higher degree of efficiency, and have given great satisfaction. Until a few years ago but little attention was paid to the determination of the actual course of drill-holes, to the accurate sampling' and analysis of the material, or to the scientific location of the drill-holes. It has now been common practice for several years in many districts to test the inclination of drillholes by etching glass tubes with hydrofluoric acid, but the direction of deviation from the vertical has not often been determined. Methods of determining the direction by means of a compass were first developed in connection with drilling in Victoria. The latest method used on the Rand in South Africa has been recently described by John I. Hoffman.2 In the same paper Mr. Hoffman describes an ingenious method of wedging-off a drill-hole so as to start new holes at several successive points. By this means a hole can be deflected in any desired direction, and the curvature can be controlled to a considerable extent, provided the rock is soft enough to permit the hole to be wedged off. Unfortunately, in the Lake Superior district, the jasper iron-formation is so hard that it is very difficult, if not impossible, to do this. The work performed by the Royal Commission on Mining Subsidence is likely to prove of permancnt value, less perhaps for the conclusions it has reached and for the recommendations it has based upon these than for the admirable exposition which it affords of the law concerning mining subsidence and of the legal status of the person who has suffered damage by reason of such subsidence, as also of him whose working has caused the damage. The Commission was appointed by Royal Warrant in the middle of 1925 and delivered its final report in the middle of 1927. The terms of reference to the Commission were as follows: "To consider the operation of the law relating to the support of the surface of the land, and of buildings or works on or under the surface, by underlying or adjacent minerals; to enquire into the extent and gravity of the damage caused by subsidence owing to the extraction of minerals and the incidence of the resulting liability; and to report what steps should be taken, by legislation or otherwise, to remedy, equitably to all persons concerned, any defects or hardships that may be found to arise in existing conditions." Report on the Doncaster Area The Commission submitted an interim report at the end of 1925, which referred solely to one area, usually spoken of as the Doncaster area, and recommended that a Commission of a more technical character be appointed to investigate this particular case. This recommendation was acted upon, and the Commission thus appointed reported early in 1928. Here it is necessary only to indicate the nature of the special problem that had to be solved, the proposed solution being mainly of local interest. The Doncaster area consists of about 330 sq. miles of low-lying land in the southeasterly portion of Yorkshire and adjoining parts of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. No less than 78 per cent, of this land lies below the 25-ft. contour line, and a good deal is even below high-water level. It includes a large tract of land known as Hatfield Chase, swampy ground which has always been a source of trouble on that account, so much so that in 1626 a Dutchman, Cornelius Vermuyden, was called in by King Charles I to devise and execute schemes of drainage for its reclamation. In discussing the classification of iron to-day, we are to leave out of consideration the general division into non-malleable or cast iron and malleable iron, as to the adequacy of which no question has been raised; and to confine ourselves to the subdivisions of malleable iron. This has been classified, according to the extent to which the properties imparted by carbon are present (viz., resilience, hardness,strength, and, above all, the capacity for being hardened by sudden cooling from a high temperature), into (1) wrought iron which cannot be hardened, and (2) steel which can be hardened; and this classification I shall, for briefness, term the carbon classification. Until within a few years all authorities, both metallurgical and general, have concurred in explicitly recognizing the carbon-given qualities, and preeminently the capacity for being hardened, as the essential qualities of steel; this is laid down with clearness by every writer on the subject. For several years this old classification has not been sufficient to meet all our needs, since the genius of Bessemer, Siemens, and, I may add, Holley, has produced wrought iron which has been perfectly melted, and thus freed from certain mechanical adhering impurities. This causes what we call homogeneousness for want of a better word, and gives rise to many important qualities which the old wrought iron had not; qualities universally recognized, though not readily described. I shall, for briefness, style them the fusion qualities, and a classification based on them, a fusion classification. A quantitative explanation is offered for the peculiar curled grain shapes found in the microstructures of drawn wires of bcc metals and compressed aluminum specimens. It is shown that once an [011] fiber texture is developed, the slip system are so oriented that further slip tends to produce plane strain rather than axially symmetric flow of individual grains. With plane -strain flow, however, compatibility of neighboring grains can be maintained only by a bending of grains about one another. PROBABLY the most obvious microstructural feature of heavily worked metals is the distorted shapes of grains. In the course of deformation, the shape change of each grain must be compatible with that of neighboring grains; otherwise holes would be formed at grain boundaries. In analyses of poly-crystalline deformation by Taylor and subsequent workers it was assumed that grain boundary compatability was maintained by each grain undergoing the same shape change as the polycrystalline aggregate in which it is imbedded. According to this assumption, when simple tension or compression is applied to a random polycrystal or to one with a fiber texture, each grain ought to deform with axially symmetric flow. Initially equiaxed grains should become cigar-shaped during wire drawing and pancake-shaped during compression. While microstructural observations of deformed metals are generally in accord with such a picture, certain striking exceptions may be noted. Peck and Thomas5'8 found that grains in heavily drawn tungsten, iron, and niobium (columbium) wires become shaped like ribbons curled about the wire axis, Fig. 1. At a suggestion from the author, they rationalized the development of these micro-structures by considering the orientation of the slip systems in the [011] texture formed by the wire drawing. It is shown in this paper that marked departure from axially symmetric flow of grains is also observed when polycrystalline aluminum is severely compressed. Again the explanation must lie in the orientation of the slip system in the [011] texture, which is formed in fcc metals by compression.' THEORY A simple quantitative argument will be presented to show that the development of these microstructures is a result of flow on the combination of slip systems for which the minimum amount of mechanical work is expended in producing a unit tensile (or compressive) strain. First it must be realized that the macroscopic strains of a crystal resulting from slip are given by: where d dy, and dc, are normal strain increments parallel to the x, y, and z reference axes; are crystallographic shear-strain increments on slip systems

With only one certain exception coal was never used by the Indians, before white men came to America, for any purpose except as an ornament or for paint. Within the past few years it has been discovered that the Hopi Indians in Navajo County, Arizona, used lignite for burning pottery, about 1000 A. D., as dated by tree rings. They were able to obtain a clear color in their ware that could not be obtained with brushwood fires. The coal was mined by hammers from outcrop openings, some of which can still be seen, and the tools used have been found in them.1 (See also p. 376.) Small figurines made of splint or cannel coal have been found at various localities in western New York, in Ohio and possibly other places, evidently made for ornaments. There is no reason to think they are of any greater age, if as old, as that mentioned above. Some crushed coal was used by the Indians as a black pigment in painting themselves, but apparently the eastern Indians never used coal for any other purposes. Some think that several tribes of Indians in the Northwest, along the Missouri, used coal as fuel, the basis being a statement attributed to Radisson about 1660. In the Jesuit Relations of 1659-1660 it was stated that Radisson anti Groseilliers had just returned from a visit to Lake Superior and beyond. "In the country of the Poualak, which means 'warriors' they say `as wood is scanty in supply and small in size in their country, nature has taught them to make fire with coal from the earth (charbon de terre) and to cover their cabins with skins.'"2 This statement was only hearsay with the good fathers, and the reputation for veracity of the two explorers is not of the best, and it is extremely probable that instead of coal they used turf, dry grass or buffalo chips. In fact in Radisson's Voyages' he does not mention coal at all in his account of the third voyage, when he was supposed to have seen it used. His accounts of his travels are badly mixed, and he and his companions were much better travellers than narrators. None of the early travellers up the Missouri River saw any evidence even then that the Indians were familiar with the use of coal. In the writer's opinion it is unlikely that coal was used as stated by the Jesuits.

The Blind River mining camp in Canada is all set to stage a major revolution. Enthusiasts on the scene say it will bring large-scale mining to North American uranium operation. If orebodies already discovered live up to their promise, it will be anything but the usual business of a few men handpicking orebearing rock out of small mines. Because of the geological structure of the region referred to generally as the Algoma district the ore may prove an extremely lucrative enterprise for years to come. The present center of activity is in Ontario about 75 miles east of Sault Ste. Marie, and just north of Lake Huron. It stacks up as one of the large uranium discoveries in the Western Hemisphere. For a change modern mining machinery working against large ore faces of predictable grade will enable mine operators to send a product to mills of several thousand tons daily capacity. Ore shapes-up as worth more than $20 per ton. Already, many millions of tons of ore have been outlined and apparently reserves are sufficient to keep the proposed large mills going for decades. And the end is not yet in sight. This region in the Sudbury subdivision has been known for decades as having occasionally rich but sporadic occurrences of nickel, gold, pyrite, and other minerals. Because of the unpredictable mineralization for more than 80 miles along the contact line of a huge reversed "S" there was no record of successfully organized mining in the district-until the present one.
