(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) . THE manifold inconveniences resulting from the absence of a uniform standard of mass for determining the weight of precious stones have long been obvious. This lack has been keenly felt in commercial transactions, and those who have devoted time and research to the study of historic diamonds and precious stones have had frequent occasion to deplore the absence of such a standard in the past. In a paper read in Chicago in 1893, before the International Congress of Weights and Measures, held in connection with the World's Columbian Exposition, the writer suggested dividing the carat into 100 parts, and constituting a standard international carat of 200 mg. ; that is, 5 diamond carats or 20 pearl grains to a French gram, making 5,000 carats or 20,000 pearl grains to a kilogram. He also called attention to the fact. that while this would depreciate the present diamond carat or pearl grain only about 2.5 per cent., it-would abolish the troublesome discrepancies between the various carat-weights now in use, and could be easily explained and understood everywhere.1 The subject of the various diamond carats, their incongruity, and the resulting confusion as to the correct. weights of historic gems when definite records of them are searched for, has been fully treated by me in an extensive study of this subject in The Book of the Pearl.2 To the earnest and unremitting efforts of C. E. Guillaume, Director of the Bureau Internationale des Poids et Mesures at Sèvres, is largely due the eventual success of this eminently desirable reform, which he has constantly urged both by articles on the subject and by addresses delivered in Paris before the International Committee for Weights and Measures.2

The early history of coal in West Virginia is all included with that of Virginia in the few records available but for present-day readers it is much more convenient that the account of this area prior to the Civil War be grouped with that since then. West Virginia shares with Maryland in the first record of coal noted in the Appalachian fields. This was along the upper Potomac River, in the fall of 1736, and the data about it are given under Maryland, as most' of the development of the area was in that state. The next record of coal was left by John Peter Salley in his account of the expedition he made with Howard and others in 1742. (See p. 17.) The next reference found is that of Dr. Thomas Walker, in 1750, when he passed through the Pocahontas coal field. This has been described on page 18. Six years later, in March 1756, Capt. William Preston, who was with Major Lewis in his expedition down Big Sandy River, wrote in his journal: "Tuesday 2.... Moved down the branch and- came to the main creek where we camped. Put on half rations. Came into the Cole land; crossed the river 8 times."1 The party crossed from the head of Clinch River to Horse Pen Creek, then to Jacob's Fork and down it to Dry Fork of Tug River; the coal was seen in what is now McDowell County. The early settlers must have known of the presence of the great Pittsburgh bed in the northern part of the state, both along the Monongahela River and elsewhere, because the outcrops could easily be seen along streams in many. places. The report of the Commissioners for Adjusting Claims to Unpatented Lands, made in 1789, contains several references to coal in the names of streams, made years earlier. The earliest is one for 1,000 acres to James Walker, in Monongalia County, "adjoining his settlement on a branch of the right hand fork of Pappaw known by the name of the Stone Cole Lick made in the year 1773."2 Another of 400 acres in the same locality was settled upon in 1777.2 A third spoke of a tract "on the left hand fork of Stone Cole about three miles from the mouth," in 1783.1 Monongalia County then covered all of the northern

Raymond, New York City: In connection with the subject of multiple tuyeres, my attention has been drawn to the practicability of gaining, without the multiplication of tuyeres, the advantages which that measure is intended to secure ; and learning that this had been attempted in the invention of the Gaines radial-discharge or fan-shaped tuyere, I wrote to Messrs. Gustafson Brothers, of Sequachee, Tenn., who manufacture that tugere, for information concerning the invention itself and its performance in practice. To their courtesy I am indebted for most of the facts given below. I present these statements without expressing any personal opinion on the subject (having no personal knowledge of it), for the purpose of bringing this device to the notice of members, and calling forth both criticism and testimony concerning it. Admitting that definite advantages are to be secured by the multiplication of tuyeres, we must still confess that this change involves considerable expense in the increased number of blastpipes, tuyeres, coolers, connections, and pipes for water-circulation. There is, moreover, a serious question involved in the weakening of the furnace-wall by extra perforations. This consideration applies with special force to furnaces already built without reference to such an increase of tuyere-openings. Ledebur, in his Handbuch der Eisenhüttenkunde, says on this point (I translate from the edition of 1893, page 365): "A limit to increase in the number of tuyeres is given, in any case, by the circumstance that the perforation of the wall weakens it; in other words, that there must be left between the tuyeres a mass of masonry sufficient to carry the parts above. In most cases an appropriate number may be secured by giving to the furnace as many openings as there are meters in its circumference at the tuyerelevel. For instance, for a hearth-diameter of 2.5 meters, i.e., a circumference of 7.7 meters, seven or eight openings might be made, of which, however, one would

ONE of the most striking features of the coal series passing from peat through brown coal, lignite, etc., up to anthracite is the gradual reduction of moisture content with the increased coalification of the original plant material. Thus drained peat from a bog may contain 90 per cent water, brown coal contain 50 per cent, lignite 30 per cent, while a bituminous coal may contain only 1 per cent moisture. Moisture, therefore, is one of the important factors to be considered in coal classification, especially with the lower rank coals. With bituminous and higher rank coals the moisture content is less satisfactory for classification; it may even pass a minimum value and then increase with increasing rank to anthracite and superanthracite. Coal in an undisturbed seam contains moisture which is an integral part of the coal, but it may also be wet with free, underground water percolating through the seam. Only the former must be considered in evaluating the moisture content of the coal for classification purposes; this will be called the "true moisture" of the coal. When the seam is mined and sampled the sample taken may show the true moisture; on the contrary, it may contain in addition free mine water or, especially in dry, well ventilated mines, it may contain less than the true moisture. Coal contains unstable organic compounds which may decompose, with the production of moisture, when the coal is exposed to air at ordinary temperatures, or is heated with or without exposure to air. The potential moisture of a coal therefore is higher than its actual moisture. The lower the rank of the coal, the greater its instability, as a rule, and the greater the care necessary to avoid oxidation or decomposition in any investigation of moisture content. The majority of coal workers have preferred, on account of the difficulty in evaluating the true moisture of a coal, and for other reasons, to classify coals by analyses calculated to the dry-coal basis. A number of workers familiar with lower rank coals have recently insisted that the classification of such coals can be satisfactory only if analyses on the moist-coal basis are employed. The moisture-holding capacity of coal is therefore intimately connected with coal classification, and in this paper a procedure is outlined for determining the true moisture of a coal.

DuRing the past summer the writer was asked by the Illinois State Geological Survey to make a study of some of its economic geological problems with regard to the applicability of geophysical methods of prospecting to their solution. The following four problems were suggested for investigation: (1) the fluorspar area of Southern Illinois, (2) oil structures in the south central part of the state, (3) the lead and zinc-bearing area of northwestern Illinois, and (4) the water supply and gravel deposits of the glacial drift. The prime requirements were to find a means of obtaining a maximum of useful information with a fairly modest outlay of expenditure for technical staff and equipment. The method of procedure adopted was that of making a preliminary study of each of the problems named by means of available office data and published reports with supplementary field reconnaissance where necessary. Preliminary Studies Fluorspar.—The fluorspar deposits of southern Illinois as shown by Weller,1 Bastin2 and others are of two main types: (1) vein deposits along steeply dipping normal fault planes, and (2) "blanket" deposits occurring practically horizontally along a certain sedimentary horizon. The vein deposits are composed mostly of calcite and fluorspar in sheetlike veins of thicknesses, where mined, ranging from about 2 to 12 ft. The surrounding topography is in a mature state of development with a relief of about 100 ft. or more. Any geophysical prospecting for this ore would have to depend either upon the physical properties of the ore and associated minerals or upon the properties of the geologic structure containing them. Fluorspar has a density of 3.18, which is somewhat greater than 2.7, that of calcite. Its

INTRODUCTION THE correlation of property changes during precipitation with structure has progressed, sometimes rapidly but other times more slowly, since the fundamental discovery of Merica, Waltenberg and Scott.1 The predominent factor that hampered the progress has been limitations imposed by the various detection methods. Refinements in X ray diffraction techniques and in metallographic methods, which have been extended by the electron microscope, have contributed new information within the last few years. These permit an extension of the theory as proposed by Mehl and fetter in 1940.2 Now that a suffcient number of alloys has been investigated to establish a general mechanism of the precipitation process, a correlation of the facts into a generally applicable theory of age-hardening is both warranted and desirable. 'I he purpose of the paper is to provide an orderly correlation of the phenomenological facts of precipitation hardening. Speculation on mechanism of hardening will be confined to that consistent with existing theories of hardening. Age-hardening accompanies the formation of a new structure, the precipitate, as provided by an alloy system in which solid solubility decreases with decreasing temperature. Upon this premise alone all such systems would be expected to include age-hardenable alloys. Alas, this is not always the case. Few attempts have been made to explain the variable degree of age-hardening among different alloys or to explain the influence of small alloying additions upon the hardening. It is a matter of common knowledge that one of the disadvantages of the arc type, electric zinc furnace, is the production of a large amount of blue powder and proportionately little liquid spelter, for, as stated by Stansfield,l "A notable defect in the electric smelting of zinc ores is the difficulty experienced in obtaining the distilled zinc in the liquid state; ...... when zinc ores are smelted electrically, very little liquid metal is commonly obtained, nearly all of the zinc being in the state of powder." This difficulty was not encountered in the electric furnace used12 the main difficulty being the destruction of the fire-brick lining of the large condenser, in certain parts, and the formation of .some oxide and dross coatings on the condensing surfaces. The reason for these difficulties could readily be explained by the infiltration of air whenever the condenser was changed from one retort base to the other, the zinc absorbed in the fire-brick forming oxide and causing rupture by its expending volume. Two facts, however, tended to disprove this theory for the rupture of the fire-brick lining: first, the large distilling retort, lined with fire-brick, which was shifted from charge to charge on alternate bases at temperatures between 1200 and 1300 C., fully exposed to the air, showed no signs of disintegration whatever; second, marked disintegration in the condenser occurred .only in places that were at tempera-

The International Nickel Co., Ontario Div. mines, faced with rising production requirements, short labor supply, and ever increasing labor costs turned to mechanized mining for a solution to its problems. The degree of mechanization of ore removal has increased from 1966 with the purchase of the first diesel-powered load-haul-dump (LHD) machine to the present, with over 53% of all underground production handled by these units. Keeping pace with mechanized ore removal, there has been a parallel development of drilling equipment to complement the mucking units. This paper deals with the applications and economic advantages of mechanized drilling at the underground mines of Inco, Ontario Div. It covers the use of various types of mechanized drills in such mining methods as cut-and-fill, induced block caving, and sublevel caving. The economics of raise boring are also discussed.

The method of obtaining the data on which this paper is based is explained in detail in the paper on Determination of Viscosity of Iron Blast-furnace Slags.' The work was made possible by a grant of funds from Engineering Foundation, and it gives the results now obtained, continuing the general subject of our previous work and reported in former papers2 The data experimentally obtained are in the form of a temperature-viscosity curve for any slag of particular composition. (See Fig. 1.) From these curves, the viscosity of a slag of a definite composition and at a definite temperature is taken off and is plotted on a plane triaxial diagram showing compositions of silica lime and alumina on a plane representing constant-magnesia content (Fig. 4). The temperatures at which these results were plotted are 1300°, 1350°, 1400°, 1450°, 1500°, 1550" and 1600" C. and since the constant magnesia plane sections were an even 1 per cent. magnesia apart, magnesia analyses not of even unit magnesia composition were projected to these even unit magnesia planes. For example, 1.78 per cent. magnesia and 2.35 per cent. magnesia were projected to the 2 per cent. magnesia plane. The triaxial diagrams on which this first plotting was made were drawn on celluloid sheets, a transparent material on which it was easy to draw. When all the experimental work was plotted on celluloid in this way, the sheets representing a definite temperature were stacked in the proper order and were examined by transmitted light. Where

As a result of research work done during the planning of the Kokkola zinc plant it was found that a very efficient cementation of impurities from the suspension obtained after leaching copper and cadmium cakes was achieved by adding zinc dust to the batch without filtration after the leaching. All elements nobler than cadmium are precipitated with the exception of lead, which must be removed in a separate step. Using pure zinc dust, free from noble metals, the cadmium sponge produced will only contain elements that can be re- moved from cadmium by meltrefining. The process is thus : 1. Leaching and purification 2. Removal of lead (with BaCO3) 3. Precipitation of cadmium sponge with pure zinc dust 4. Meltrefining of briquetted sponge with NaOH for removal of Zn (and others) The paper deals with the removal of the most critical elements, i.e. Co, Ni, As, Sb, Cu, Pb, T1 in the liquid phase and Zn and T1 in the melt. A survey is also given of the behaviour of most of the other elements normally found in Cd raw material, such as Ge, Te, Se, Sn, In, Ga. It is shown that in most cases the benefit of an electrolysis in Cd production is very limited. In Kokkola 99.998% Cd is achieved by this method, but in favourable cases it may be possible to come quite close to five nines.

During 1914 and 1915, extensive experiments were conducted at the concentrator of The Detroit Copper Mining Co. of Arizona, at Morenci, Ariz., in order to test the relative grinding efficiencies of the Marathon, the Chilean and the Hardinge Mills. The Marathon mill used in the experiments was the first one ever built by the manufacturers; and since this was the first time that it was given a thorough tryout, with such remarkable results, the data have been assembled in the following paper and submitted in the interests of the milling profession. Description of the Flow Sheet The concentrator flow sheet, as it existed at the time of these tests, is shown in Fig. 1. The total mill feed, as delivered from the crushing plant, had as its maximum size 1-in. material. This material was screened dry on Cole Zig-Zag screens fitted with 4-mesh openings; the oversize going to one pair of coarse rolls, the undersize to five Wilfley tables fitted with Butchart National riffles. The coarse-roll product was elevated and screened wet on Zig-Zag screens fitted with 4-mesh openings, the undersize going to the five tables mentioned above and the oversize to one pair of fine rolls. The fine-roll product was elevated and screened together with the coarse-roll product; so that, before any concentrating operations took place, the total mill feed was reduced to pass a 4-mesh screen. After concentration on Butchart-riffled tables, the tailings from these tables passed to de-sliming hoppers, where two products were formed, viz., an overflow and a discharge. The discharge constituted the feed for the Chilean mills. It contained 16 per cent. slime (—200 mesh) and 3 parts of water to 1 of solids. The problem of selection of the active slip systems for a crystal undergoing an arbitrary strain was analyzed by Taylor and by Bishop and Hill in terms of a minimum (internal) and a maximum (external) work criterion, respectively. These two criteria have now been generalized to include crystallographic slip on several sets of slip systems, twinning mixed with slip, and slip by (noncrystallographic) pencil glide. The generalized treatment also takes into account the possibility of a Bauschinger effect and of unequal hardening among the shear systems, which were considered in the Bishop and Hill work. Optimization techniques of linear and nonlinear programming are shown to be applicable for the numerical calculation of the minimum or maximum work. In the case of crystallographic shear, the constraint functions are linear and hence the optimal work is obtained as the saddle value of the lagrangian function Wi(y) e minimum and W,(u) + (a) for the maximum, where Wi is the (internal) work, We is the (external) work, Y is the crystallographic shear strain, u is the applied stress, and and are constraints. It is shown that the Lagrangians are functionally the same and the saddle value of one problem is identical to the saddle value of the other, proving that the two analyses are completely equivalent. In the case of pencil glide, although the constraint functions are nonlinear and neither convex nor concave, the equivalence of the optimal values to the saddle value of the Lagrangian (which is again identical for both problems) is still valid. WHEN a crystal deforms plastically by crystallographic shear, five independent shears are generally required to accommodate five independent strain components specifying the deformation. Assuming slip as the only shear mechanism, Taylor1 in 1938 analyzed the deformation in terms of a minimum work criterion. He hypothesized that of all combinations of five slip systems which are capable of accommodating the deformation, the active combination is that one for which the internal work C is a minimum, where 1 TI is the critical resolved shear stress for slip on the 1-th slip system and is the corresponding simple shear. By further assuming equal 72 for all equivalent slip systems and no Bauschinger effect, Taylor re- duced the minimum work problem to one of minimum and applied the analysis to the case of axisym- Metric flow by {111}(110) slip in fcc crystals. However, he did not consider the question of whether the resolved shear stress has in fact attained the critical value for slip on the newly found active systems without exceeding it on the inactive systems. In 1951 Bishop and ill' put forth the maximum work analysis in which slip is again assumed as the only deformation mechanism. In this analysis, the work o1 done in a given strain ij by a stress ujj not violating the yield condition is maximized. In addition, the analysis takes into account the possibility that the critical resolved shear stress for slip may not be equal among the slip systems and that the slip behavior may exhibit the Bauschinger effect. As with Taylor, a single set of slip systems—{111)(110) — was analyzed numerically. It thus appears that the Bishop and Hill treatment is on a more sound physical basis than the Taylor treatment. However, Bishop and Hill showed that where there is equal hardening among all slip systems and when there is no Bauschinger effect, Eq. [11 ] of Ref. 2, as assumed by Taylor, the results of their maximum work analysis are the same as those of Taylor's minimum work analysis. Hence at least under those conditions there is an implication that the Taylor analysis does lead to a critical resolved shear stress for slip on the predicted active systems without violating the yield condition on the inactive systems. Recently, the Taylor analysis was applied for numerical solutions of the axisymmetric flow problem, for slip on {110}(111), {112}(111). {123)(111) systems as well as a mixture of all three sets of svstems."1 Computational techniques based on the optimization theories of linear and nonlinear programming4 were employed in these solutions. The same techniques were employed in the solutions of an axisymmetric flow problem of deformation by slip on (111) (110) systems and twinning on (111)(112) systems5 which had been considered theoretically from a modified Taylor approach. The utilization of these techniques has led to the realization that the solutions of Taylor's minimum work problem imply the solutions of Bishop and Hill's maximum work problem. The two problems turn out to be dual problems in the well known sense of mathematical programming. It is thus the purpose of this paper to first generalize the minimum and maximum work analyses to include crystallographic slip on several sets of slip systems, twinning mixed with slip, and slip by (non-crystallographic) pencil glide, as well as the possibility of a Bauschinger effect and of unequal hardening

A study of the electrical conductivity of gold films less than 200 in thickness indicates a negative temperature coefficient of resistance and a thermal actiuatlon energy of less than 0.25 ev. The films consist of discrete metal islands of linear dimensions from a few angstroms to 1000A. Films were able to withstand applied fields up to 60,000 v per cm before breakdown occurred. A model for the conduction mechanism is proposed which involtes a Potential barrier due to work junction, irriage forces , and an electrostatic potential arising from separating an electron from a neutral island leaving behind a positively charged metal island. Activation energies of less than 0.25 ev ave consistent with this model, which includes a tunneling andor Thermal mechanism for conduction between the separate metal islands. An apparent satuvation effect in conductivity at high fields is observed experimentally. The saturation effect may be explained by the influence of the electrostatic contribution to the potential barriers for the transition through several islands adjacent to the original island which was activated to give up an electron. The proposed model gives Poor quantitative agyeement for the intermal electrical field between islands. ThIS paper will relate the structure of discontinuous metal films to the electrical properties and will emphasize the following topics: 1) the relation of the conduction mechanism to particle size and a comparison of particle size from electrical measurements with electron-microscope studies; 2) the saturation of the conductivity at high electric fields; and finally, 3) a comparison between the external field applied and the apparent field between particles. che- latter comparison points to a need for a modification in the model for the conduction mechanism first proposed by orter' and expanded by Neugebauer and webb2 which will be dealt with in the discussion. The paper is based on results on gold films on glass microscope slides. The clms were vacuum-evaporated and were about lOOA thick, thickness being measured by interferometry. It has been observed that metal films of this thickness do not exhibit bulk metallic conduction. Films thinner than some critical thiclmess, depending upon substrate temperature and other factors, have conductivities which increase with increasing temperature with thermal activation energies of less than 0.25 ev. Electron-microscope studies3 have shown that these films consist of discrete metal islands having linear dimnsions from a few angstroms to approximately 1000A. When the metal is being vacuum-deposited on the substrate, islands on the order of a few angstroms appear first. As the deposition continues the islands may tend to agglomerate into larger particles and may eventually grow together into a continuous film,3''' In our tests the conductivity of the gold films was found to be about ten orders of magnitude less than the bulk conductivity of gold. When oxygen was introduced into the test chamber the conductivity decreased by a factor of about one-third. This can be related to an increase in work function for gold caused by adsorption of oxygen, as reported by Oullet and Rideal.s Exposure to an atmosphere of water vapor caused an increase in conductivity by a factor of 2 or 3 when a low field was applied. When the films were exposed to water vapor under a high field the conductivity increased by as much as two orders of magnitude. The activation energies measured were much less than the work function for gold, 0.25 ev or less, with the smaller activation energies observed for thicker films. It will be shown that the activation energy is a function of particle size and spacing. In general the model for the potential between metal islands would include the effective work function, the image force, the applied field, and an electrostatic term. The electrostatic contribution arises from the potential required to separate an electron from a conducting sphere. DIAMOND drill research work was initiated at the School of Mines, University of Minnesota, in late 1949. The Drilling Symposium held in Duluth that spring highlighted the problem of high cost and core recovery and the need for controlled testing. An advisory committee made up of informed representatives of both mining companies and drilling companies was formed to suggest and advise on a program of drill research. A Hy-Mac hydraulic drill unit, see Fig. 1, especially designed for experimental testing, was obtained for this work by the School of Mines through the courtesy of the Carboloy Co. It is an extremely flexible unit, capable of exerting a forward thrust of about 1750 lb and turning at speeds from 650 to 2200 rpm. The feed arrangement is so designed that the advance can be set either at a constant rate or permitted to vary at a fixed pressure, see Fig. 2. The

Although the Siemens regenerator principle was introduced into byproduct coke-oven design about 40 years ago, many problems of construction, and particularly of heat distribution and pressure conditions, have not been fully solved. Heat should be applied to the walls of a coke oven in such a way that the coking of the charge of coal will be completed everywhere at the same time, and at approximately the same temperature. This means that the application of heat should be uniform from the top to the bottom of the coal mass (except for the thin layer at the top that is purposely kept at a somewhat lower temperature to reduce cracking of the byproducts); also that a little more heat must be applied to the coke end than to the pusher end, because the coal mass is a little thicker at that end. As a modern coke oven is about 40 ft. long and 12 ft. high, a real problem is involved in the proper application of heat to the oven walls so as to secure quick coking time (without endangering the walls through local overheating) and produce coke made at a uniform temperature. Design of Ovens In all regenerative ovens, the points of combustion are arranged in duplicate sets, one set operating in one-half the area of the heating wall and the other set alternately operating in the other half. Because of the reversal of the flow of gases, the points of maximum and minimum temperatures are alternately located at the same places, thus preventing dangerous local overheating. With the increasing importance of clay in drilling operations which demand more precise and exacting control over its behavior, there has come the realization that most of our present methods of control over many of its important properties still represent more of an art than a science. Such a situation with respect to a material of such industrial significance is unfortunate, and naturally many investigations have been conducted to improve our knowledge. In general, these investigations have revealed the complex nature of clay behavior and while sometimes they may not have seemed to contribute directly to a solution of the field operator's problems they have been of inestimable importance in bringing to light the broad fundamental scientific principles upon which must be based any effective working theory correlating the known facts of clay behavior and predicting profitable new lines of attack for its improvement. Major Facts Concerning Behavior of Clays In the study of clays, as in that of most other colloidal materials, it has been impossible to make progress by the study of isolated facts. On the other hand, analysis of large groups of facts, many of which seem at first completely unrelated, can lead to a deeper insight into the structure of clays and the mechanism of their behavior. It will be well to list the major facts on which the analysis here presented is based, starting with those that have emerged repeatedly from past investigations and which thereby constitute an impregnable foundation upon which must rest any comprehensive theory of clay behavior: 1. Clays consist of hydrated aluminosilicates of extremely fine and variable particle size. 2. Suspended in water, clays exhibit variable degrees of swelling, depending upon their origin and upon the chemical and colloidal nature of any other substances present. The magnitude of the swelling is a direct indication of the extent to which the clay has become dispersed.

SOME 40 miles east of Tampa is the center of the Florida pebble phosphate deposits. These are of Pliocene age and consist of several members of the Bone Valley formation.1 Physically the phosphate-bearing formation, locally called the "matrix," varies in thickness from nothing to about 25 ft., usually averages 10 ft., and consists mainly of clay, quartz and phosphate pebble, the latter particles varying in size from colloidal to one inch diameter. The pebbles range in color from dark gray, through white, to cream, and in hardness from that which must be broken with a hammer to that which can be scratched with the fingernail. They assay from 66 to 80 per cent bone phosphate of lime (called "B.P.L." in the trade) or tricalcium phosphate (Ca3P20s) and are secondary apatites. They form from 15 to 50 per cent by weight of the matrix, Over the matrix lies a varying thickness (5 to 40 ft.) of overburden composed of quartz and clay. Briefly, mining consists of two operations2 in open pits about 200 ft. wide by ½ mile or more in length. In the first step overburden is removed by large electric draglines at the rate of about 700 cu. yd. per hour. This is followed closely by hydraulic mining of the matrix at the rate of about 300 cu. yd. per hour. This matrix yardage is moved from an improvised sump in the floor of the pit to an ore-dressing plant, some-times a mile distant, by one, two or three "pit-cars" (pumping units) working on a 12-in. pipe line called the "rock line" to distinguish it from the high-pressure water line feeding the hydraulic giants, which is known as the "hydraulic line." This 700 yd. of overburden and 300 yd. of matrix-1000 yd. in all-amounts to about 1500 tons of material moved each hour. The over-burden is dumped into the mined-out pit alongside the pit being mined. The matrix moves to the ore-dressing plant at the rate of about 7 ½ long tons in 4000 gal. of water per minute-a ratio of approximately one to two by weight, or one to six by volume. This constitutes the "mill heads," but in the pebble district it is called the "matrix."

Although the Siemens regenerator principle was introduced into byproduct coke-oven design about 40 years ago, many problems of construction, and particularly of heat distribution and pressure conditions, have not been fully solved. Heat should be applied to the walls of a coke oven in such a way that the coking of the charge of coal will be completed everywhere at the same time, and at approximately the same temperature. This means that the application of heat should be uniform from the top to the bottom of the coal mass (except for the thin layer at the top that is purposely kept at a somewhat lower temperature to reduce cracking of the byproducts); also that a little more heat must be applied to the coke end than to the pusher end, because the coal mass is a little thicker at that end. As a modern coke oven is about 40 ft. long and 12 ft. high, a real problem is involved in the proper application of heat to the oven walls so as to secure quick coking time (without endangering the walls through local overheating) and produce coke made at a uniform temperature. Design of Ovens In all regenerative ovens, the points of combustion are arranged in duplicate sets, one set operating in one-half the area of the heating wall and the other set alternately operating in the other half. Because of the reversal of the flow of gases, the points of maximum and minimum temperatures are alternately located at the same places, thus preventing dangerous local overheating. By definition the word "grout" means a thin mortar, or a kind of plaster or cement, and "grouting" means to fill up or finish with grout. The words "cement," "plaster" and "mortar" mean a substance that is used in a soft state which subsequently hardens. Thus, grouting is the filling of void space with a substance that hardens. Construction cements are the most common substances used, either by themselves or in mixtures, but the term grouting is applied quite correctly when other substances such as plastics and certain chemicals are used. Also, the use of the term grouting to cover the filling of voids with materials that do not actually become hard, such as the flotation tailings used in grouting in the southeast Missouri lead district, should be considered correct, as some stiffening does take place and, anyway, it is a better descriptive term than any substitute. Engineers are interested in grouting because some of the materials with which they must work contain voids, and certain conditions can be improved if these voids can be filled with something solid and permanent. Grouting is done to accomplish several purposes: I. To stop the passage of fluids and gases, 2. To cement materials together to make them stronger, and 3. To prevent consolidation of materials by filling void space with something solid as a replacement for the air and water that could be forced out under load. The construction industry uses grouting extensively for all three purposes. Grouting is used to stop water percolation under and around dams. It is used to control water flow in tunnel driving and in shaft sinking. It is used to improve foundation conditions under civil engineering structures by permanently filling void space and thereby reducing settlement, or by cementing broken rock together and increasing its supporting strength. The oil and gas industry does a lot of grouting, primarily to stop the passage of gases and fluids. The search for oil at increasingly greater depths has meant greater investment per well, and the oil industry has spent large sums on development of improved drilling methods. This
