Warm forging to near final product geometry shows promising benefits in terms of microstructure refinement and texture modification. In the present study, Semi-closed die forging was performed on extruded AZ80 magnesium alloy at a forging temperature of 400 °C and various forging ram speeds. Compression tests were performed to investigate the influence of forging at various deformation rates on the performance of extruded AZ80 magnesium alloy. The microstructural analysis showed that the extruded AZ80 possesses a grain structure typical in wrought magnesium alloys, with sharp basal texture. In contrast, the forged samples had a recrystallized microstructures and a spatially varying textures and crystal orientations resulting from the complex flow behaviour within the closed die forging. Furthermore, once forged, a significant increase in the material isotropy, homogeneity as well as failure elongation were observed. An increase in UCS of 9% was observed in the forging direction, while the UCS in the extrusion direction was similar to that before forging. The changes in UCS can be attributed to both the refined grain microstructure and crystal reorientation. Successful microstructure recrystallization occurs for strain rates which traverse several orders of magnitude, and in general, UCS isotropy increases with increasing strain rate. It is believed that forging cause’s grain refinement and texture modification which act to enhance the mechanical performance (UCS, fracture strain and superficial hardness) for the forging conditions investigated in this study.

THE following paper has been prepared with the object of placing on record in the Transactions some facts concerning the present condition and future prospects of the coal industry of Illinois. In presenting it, the writer wishes to say that a considerable amount of the material contained is taken from the publications and records of the Illinois Coal Mining Investigations, the annual Coal Report of the State Mining Board, and the work of the State Geological Survey. Coal Beds and Mining Methods According to the latest maps of the State Geological Survey, there are only 19 of the 102 counties of the State some portion of whose territory is not within the borders of the coal measures. If outlying areas in Calhoun and Whiteside Counties are considered, the number is reduced to 17. This does not mean that all of the 85 counties that are partly or wholly underlain by coal measures will become producers, as there are some portions of the State in which the coal does not occur in beds of such thickness as to warrant the hope that it can be mined. The mining of coal is widespread, however, for in 1916 there was production from 51 of the 102 counties of the State. There seem to be no cases in which operations will be limited by depth, as none of the coal measures lie at depths much greater than those at which it has been proved that coal may be profitably mined in this field. In fact, the deepest shaft reaching a bed of bituminous coal in the United States is located in this State at Assumption, where coal only 3 ½ ft. (1.07 m.) thick is worked at a depth of 1004 ft.. (306 m.) The coal beds occur in the form of a basin which is deepest along a line extending through the central part of the State and bearing a, little west of north. The northern, western and southern borders of this basin lie within the boundaries of the State, but on the eastern side the Illinois field is continuous with the Indiana field. Gold extraction along the Carlin trend requires large withdrawals of ground water, which can be perched, unconfined at shallow depth, and (or) confined at depth. Five hydrogeologic units-Quaternary basin-fill sediments, Tertiary basin-fill sediments and sedimentary rocks, Tertiary volcanic rocks, Devonian to Ordovician siltstones, and Devonian to Ordovician carbonate rocks--form the framework for two aquifer systems that discharge along some reaches of the Humboldt River and its tributaries and are recharged by streamflow along other reaches. Ground-water withdrawals eventually could affect these stream-aquifer interactions. Further work is needed to quantify regional hydrologic processes and evaluate potential effects of mining on water resources.

One of the major problems encountered with recirculatory breathing apparatus presently used by mine rescue teams is that the inspired air becomes uncomfortably, and often dangerously, hot. This is also true with self-rescuers. It is well known that man can tolerate very high dry-bulb temperatures if the wet-bulb temperature is low, but not vice- versa. The maximum tolerable, wet-bulb temperature is about 42 °C (108 °F). A continuously inhaled wet-bulb temperature above this value can cause irreversible damage to the throat and lung tissue, and wet-bulb temperatures close to it cause extreme discomfort (1) and seriously retard the capability of the man to perform useful work. A theoretical analysis, combined with experimental results, has shown that it is the carbon dioxide absorbent that is the major cause of high wet-bulb temperatures of the inspired air in the Siebe Gorman Proto 4, and in the Draeger BG 174 apparatus, both of which are used by rescue teams on South African mines (2). In the Proto 4 apparatus, the absorbent for the carbon dioxide is soda lime (calcium hydroxide). The German Draeger BG 174 also uses this absorbent but under arduous conditions such as in hot environments (50 °C, 122 °F), the use of an alkali absorbent cartridge is recommended which consists mainly of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide). Lithium hydroxide is used in some apparatus in the United States. It is clear that different absorbents will produce different quantities of heat and moisture for a given rate of absorption of carbon dioxide. The proportion of this heat and moisture which is transferred to the user depends upon how much can be removed from the recirculating air between the absorbent and the mouthpiece. This paper discusses the present methods of heat removal and describes the design and test results of a prototype evaporative cooler.

As fossil fuels become depleted over the next century, it is imperative that Canada and other countries examine ways to transition to other sources of energy, particularly renewable resources. A critical obstacle to developing Canada?s renewable energy resources is the scarcity of infrastructure to wheel the generated electricity to a viable market. For each megawatt of renewable electrical power, a maximum of 1 km of connecting power line is typically feasible. This means that hydropower, geothermal, and wind power projects with capacities up to 100 MW must be located within a maximum of 100 km of a main power line in order to be economically viable. With a total length of about 1200 km, the proposed Northern Gateway oil pipeline project creates an excellent opportunity to become a corridor that can seed renewable energy projects in Northern British Columbia and Alberta. Utility companies must build new infrastructure to provide the electricity for constructing and operating the proposed pipeline. The pipeline and linked power line infrastructure therefore, should be designed and built with consideration to create an energy highway to the significant renewable energy resources, such as hydro, wind, and geothermal, in the vicinity of the proposed pipeline. Some of the important renewable energy resources in northern British Columbia can be developed in connection with the proposed pipeline. It is estimated that close to 2,500 MW of commercially viable wind, geothermal and run-of-river power resources are present in the proximity of the proposed pipeline corridor. While oil flows westward from the Alberta bitumen fields, the generated green power can flow eastward to help the Canadian oil sand industry to offset as much as 10 Megatons of carbon emissions per year. The generated carbon credits are equivalent to 75% of the emissions associated with extraction of the 525,000 barrels per day of oil from oil sands, intended to be carried by the pipeline.

In recent years, the use of steel fibre-reinforced concrete (SFRC) for segmental tunnel linings has become increasingly popular due to numerous advantages including durability, resistance to spalling, reduced cracking at corners and edges and significant cost-saving potential. One of the key parameters for measuring the performance of SFRC is the residual (post crack) flexural strength. A problem often faced in design and quality control of SFRC is the high variability of results obtained by standard beam test methods, with reported coefficients of variability (CoV) in the order of 25 per cent. The high test variability results in a relatively low permissible design strength relative to the average flexural strength of the material and commonly leads to non-conformances with respect to residual flexural strength during production testing.This paper presents the implementation of an alternative testing method using large round determinate panels (RDPs) for quality control testing of the SFRC used in the segmental lining of the City East Cable Tunnel (CECT) in Sydney. The alternative RDP test method was found to correlate well with standard beam tests and significantly reduce the variability of test results, minimising the risk of outlying residual flexural strength results, with zero non-compliant test results reported during the production period.This successful implementation of an alternative test for post-crack flexural strength with lower variability in results constitutes a relevant precedent to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach which contributes to the development of more cost-effective concrete mixes and minimises the risk for non-compliant results and the contractual disputes that commonly arise from these.CITATION:Cortes, F, Nievergelt, R and Kost, S, 2014. During 1924 a number of lives were lost and other men incapacitated by the toxic effects of gases produced in blasting in massive sulphides. In one mine, three men working in a raise were caught by gases from blasting a drift round in massive sulphide on the level. The round in the drift was shot ahead of time and it was necessary for the three men to travel through the gases to the intake air course. Two of the men lost their lives, and the third was injured, apparently for life. Other men at this same mine have been caught in the gases at blasting time and seriously injured. At a second mine, the gases from blasting in sulphides appear to be very dangerous, and it was necessary to send a number of men who were caught in such gases to the hospital. One man who was seriously gassed has not recovered in over a year is time. Another man similarly gassed soon died of influenza.

Endless lines at service station gasoline pumps, limited travel at reduced speeds, thermostats set at an uncozy sixty-eight degrees in the dead of winter-these are but a few of the inconveniences and discomforts that awakened Americans to a realization that our domestic minerals resources, traditionally taken for granted, are not boundless. We begin to accept and practice principles of conservation, yet we are aware that this alone cannot appreciably forestall the inevitable depletion of our minerals, metals, and fossil fuels-resources critical to our Nation's economy. The key to warding off shortages is the development of technology that will insure a continuing, adequate supply of minerals and energy from reliable sources at the lowest possible costs to society and the environment. The mission of the Bureau of Mines is to develop this improved technology. Established in 1910, the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior is the Federal Government's primary research arm in the minerals and fossil fuels fields. In addition to its research role, the Bureau keeps the Government informed of the Nation's mineral posture. The Bureau also seeks to stimulate private industry, through the awarding of grants and contracts, to produce minerals and fuels at a rate compatible with the country's increasing demands.

Surface deformation monitoring is required all over the mining industry. For example oil and gas companies need this information to support exploration and production activities and to detect impacts from surface subsidence of existing hydrocarbon fields. Also opencast mines require large area information of subsidence due to dewatering of the overburden. Because of this, a lot of surface deformations measurements with GPS or traditional geodetic measurement techniques have been conduced during the last decades. This paper presents the actual capabilities to analyze GPS data using the state of the art Bernese GPS Software for GPS post processing. A new way of monitoring subsidence is a combination of GPS and satellite InSAR data. Considering this it is hoped that a combined strategy will permit receiving overall more information by integrating high point density of InSAR and accuracy of GPS. DMT is one of the leading actors on GPS services especially for monitoring surface movements from underground activities e.g. mining, water pumping or oil and gas exploitation. The paper will discuss preferences and problems of this approach on results of a current project of DMT.

The Hemlo Gold District, located on the north shore of Lake Superior, was discovered in 1981 and will become one of the largest gold mining camps in Canada. Three major Canadian mining companies are presently developing large orebodies and are scheduled to commence production at various times through 1985 and 1986. This paper describes the types of shaft sinking equipment and technology being used by contractors in constructing the required shafts to depths below 1000 metres. The principal shaft design criteria, types of shaft sinking machinery and relevant manpower allocations are discussed.

In the grand scheme of things, the 9.5-t (21,000-lb) shipment of molybdenum concentrate that left Freeport-McMoRan?s Climax Mine site on May 10, 2012 was not unlike the thousands of others that have been hauled away from the site during the last century, except for the fact that this shipment marked the official rebirth of one of America?s greatest mines. For nearly two decades, 17 years to be exact, there was no production from the mine that was once the largest underground mine in the world and was so important to the Allies? effort during World War II that it was assigned the highest priority of any mine in the United States by the War Production Board. The economic recession in 1980 put an end to the mine?s success, and the Great Recession of 2008 nearly derailed the mine again. But, like the nearby town of Leadville, CO, the mine survived thanks to an investment of more than $700 million by Climax Molybdenum Co., a Freeport-McMoRan company, to bring the Climax Mine back into production.

Now in the midst of a full-on cultural shift, they are also key players in the continual effort to re-examine and calibrate practices to meet dynamic and increasingly complex objectives.SME’s technical position statementAs a home for so many technical experts and practitioners, SME has long recognized the importance of a commitment to sustainable development by the mining and minerals industries. In April 2016, the Society formally adopted a technical position on the topic following years of participation in, and support for, related activities. The full position statement appears below. Since its inception the United States Bureau of Mines has fostered the development of portable mine lamps. Although there is still much to be desired with respect to illumination in coal and metal mines and the replacement of open lights has been slow the Bureau has been given credit for assisting materially in the development and introduction of the safe and efficient portable mine-lighting equipment available today. Much of the work conducted by the electrical section of the Bureau entails approval tests of various types of electrical equipment, including lamps; to be used in atmospheres that may contain methane or coal dust in explosive proportion. If a can lamp meets the requirements-for safety, efficiency, and adequacy, as published in Schedule 6B,4 it is approved and is generally known as a "permissible" lamp. The terms "approved" and '"permissible' often are used interchangeably. The manufacturer must put an approval plate on each approved lamp, showing it has mot the schedule requirements. The approval plate is not a guarantee that the lamp is safe. However, if the lamp, once in service, has not had any parts changed or improperly assembled or if carts that wear out or depreciate have been properly replaced it should still, be safe, efficient, and adequate for the service intended. Virtually all electric cap lamps in service today in the United States and a great many that have been sent to foreign countries bear the approval plate of the United States Bureau of Mines. Although many explosions have been attributed to open lights none has been charged against the permissible cap lamp. Nystagmus, a disease of the eye attributed to working under insufficient illumination, is practically unknown among; American miners, although it is quite prevalent among European miners.

The poor reconciliation between the values of estimated and actual grades can cause major economic losses to the mining industry. In a mining operation grade reconciliation is comparing the values of estimated grade calculated in exploration stage with actual grade obtained from blastholes' data. Many different factors affect the degree of reconciliation in a mining operation. In this paper we investigate the factors related to estimated grade which affects the reconciliation process in the exploration stage of the orebody. These factors are the sources of uncertainty in the rest of mine life. In this area the most important factors are inherent variability, statistical uncertainty and systematic uncertainty. A probabilistic model was presented to model each source of uncertainty. The implementation of proposed model was checked and its validity was investigated using real data in an iron open pit mine in Iran.

In most cases, slope movement monitoring data are collected on a temporal basis and displacement or velocity is plotted against time in order to assist the engineer to make judgements about slope behaviour. Once an unusual behaviour pattern has been established, the data are then analysed to estimate when the key inflection points occur in the data, when the slope movements start to accelerate and, ultimately, when the slope is expected to collapse. The identification of these inflection points is sometimes difficult to achieve with the naked eye. This paper presents the application of a trend analysis technique, known as cusums, to assist in this process. The authors have presented a range of data from various real life examples which highlight the effectiveness of the cusums technique. A key aspect of the cusums technique is the use of a constant (K) against which data trends are assessed. This constant is best derived from slope performance data at each site, as each rock mass will behave in its own unique way. The authors have experienced slopes that have had threshold values ranging from 0.1mm/day through to 10mm/day, and therefore a conservative approach should be adopted when assessing the performance of slopes.

"Annually thousands of deep foundations are constructed across North America supporting high voltage transmission line structures. However, a recent state of the practice survey by the Deep Foundation Institutes’ Electric Power Systems Foundation Working Group discovered that the electric power utility industry lacks consistent foundation design guidelines. The survey identified a wide variability in design assumptions, a minimal understanding of risk based analysis, and a need to standardize design methodologies. This paper summarizes the state of practice in electric system foundation design and proposes a framework for risk-based foundation design by accounting for uncertainty from both loads and resistances. Loads derived from electric system codes do not necessarily provide a compatible level of reliability for the design of foundations, as they are a mixture of probabilistic and deterministic values. Load uncertainty is derived from variability in weather conditions, structural models and material properties, typically accounted for by code derived overload factors. Resistance uncertainty arises from variability in natural soil properties, resistance models, subsurface construction techniques, material sampling methods, and limited observations. A consistent methodology is offered relating nominal resistance capacity (strength) to structure loads and service state criteria. Discussion also includes the need for risk-based assessments to account for non-structure load influences (fluvial loads, scour ground loss, liquefaction, etc.).INTRODUCTIONNearly 40 years ago the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) embarked on a major research effort to optimize reliability and economics of transmission line foundation design. Strategies focused on improvements in design models, site characterization, exploration strategies and testing to reduce uncertainty and variance in analysis. Transmission line engineers realized that safety and reliability advancements in design based on probabilistic approaches, with a focus on the unique nature of transmission line, could better control risk and cost.Some transmission line professionals took full advantage of these advancements, particularly where research led to improved software and models. Yet, even after two decades of extensive research, by 1995 the industry still had made little progress in changing design habits. The majority of designers were still characterizing sites via deterministic methods, using loads that may or may not relate to a consistent probability of occurrence, and applying a traditional global factor of safety approach (Phoon, et al. 1995). The following two decades have seen even greater developments in software and reliability-based analysis methods, but old habits seem to die hard as recent surveys show less than half of design professional quantitatively assess risk in their design process."

A number of studies have suggested that microscale asperities enhance bubble-particle attachment efficiency; however, in practice the roughening of particulate surfaces can also lead to a decrease in flotation. In the present investigation, it is proposed that nanoscale asperities may be partially responsible for this phenomenon. It is suggested that as inter-asperity separation distances are reduced capillary effects are enhanced leading to the formation of stable liquid domains, which adversely impact bubble-particle adhesion. In addition, obstruction of surfactant self-assembly may occur, further limiting flotation.

"This article focuses on the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of homogeneous and heterogeneous rocks. Critical factors impacting the UCS of rocks are reviewed and then separate assessments of UCS data from homogeneous and heterogeneous rocks are presented. The variability (coefficient of variation) of UCS test results for homogeneous rocks is found to be generally <25% while for heterogeneous rocks the variability is >35%. Failure mode variation is found to be the cause of the variability of UCS test results in heterogeneous rocks. Empirical engineering design methods that use UCS as an input parameter are discussed and suggestions are provided for selecting appropriate UCS values.INTRODUCTIONThe UCS is one of the most commonly used rock engineering parameters whether for rock mass classification or for strength determination. The mean UCS and its variability are often assumed to represent a reliable rock material property. For the reasons discussed in this article, UCS is rarely representative of the intact rock UCS. The UCS test simply records the collapse load during uniaxial loading of a cylindrical specimen. As suggested by many, the UCS is an index rather than a unique engineering parameter. The UCS is thus a proxy for rock strength which depends on the loading rate (e.g., Bieniawski 1967), specimen geometry (e.g., Hudson et al., 1971), specimen size (e.g., Bieniawski 1968), and many other factors. Furthermore, the UCS is not the same as the Hoek-Brown strength criterion parameter sci.There are differences in opinion on what is commonly considered to be ‘intact rock’. When sampling ‘intact’ pieces of core from drillholes crossing blocks of rock bound by block forming discontinuities, samples will be ‘intact’ but some samples will be veined, others will be damaged, and others will be neither. According to Hoek (1983), intact rock pieces are “the unfractured blocks occurring between structural discontinuities in a typical rock mass” and the sci parameter for intact rock is determined using the fitting procedure proposed by Hoek and Brown (1997) based on the data requirements outlined by Hoek (1983). Studies (e.g., Bewick and Kaiser 2014; Kaiser and Kim 2014) have shown that independently determined UCS and sci values for the same rock type are not equivalent. Thus, UCS data cannot be used as a replacement for sci."
