The paper examines the design issues associated with the integration of mineral processing within underground mining systems. It demonstrates conceptual integrated system design options appropriate to a range of geological scenarios. Particular reference is then given to a case study of stoping in narrow base metal veins. The performance of such integrated systems in terms of productivity, economic and environmental criteria is demonstrated by means of simulation. Particular attention is given to the potential benefits to mine waste management. Processing technologies appear to offer genuine potential benefit, whilst underground mining methods may need to evolve further to facilitate full integration. This paper is based on industry supported research aimed at developing selective and clean underground mining systems.

Modern advances have led to sweep and multibeam bathymetric surveying techniques that yield three-dimensional images of the sea floor and have also produced high-powered personal computers with which to control the data and analyse the results. At Sydney, in Nova Scotia, the topography of the sea floor over the longwall workings was observed before and after mining with a precision echo-sounder in 1987-89, with sweep bathymetry in 1993 and with multibeam bathymetry in 1994-95. The results of the latter programme produced what was probably the first observation of a complete three-dimensional subsidence trough over a longwall panel 2 500 m x 168 m. The subsidence has been quantified to a sufficient degree of accuracy to allow simple trend analysis, which has shown that the pattern and shape of movements are similar to those found elsewhere but with significantly smaller maximum subsidence. At Fermilab, located in Batavia, Illinois, a 4,000-foot underground complex of tunnels and caverns is being excavated on a decline of six percent, at depths of up to350 ft, below grade. The site geology consists of dolomitic and shale formations overlain by glacial till. Since the start of construction in March 2000, work to date has concentrated on the excavation and support of the Target Hall cavern, which is characterized by a low rock cover and a final lining of shotcrete. Ground vibrations, noise levels, and rock movement were monitored during excavation by drill and blast methods to prevent damage to experimental facilities, impacts on surrounding communities, and to allow evaluation of cavern performance. The cavern design was based on a UDEC numerical analysis that was validated during construction by comparison to encountered conditions and measured cavern movements.

Isotopes and hydrochemistry were used to define groundwater flow systems and better understand the hydrogeological setting of the Karijini National Park, which is in the Central Pilbara region adjacent to the Marandoo iron ore mine. Based on the stable isotope composition of the water samples, the data can be divided into two main groups. Groundwater is characterised by depleted dD and d18O, suggesting no significant evaporation effect. Surface water on the other hand is more enriched in dD and d18O due to evaporation. The relatively high concentration of Cl- compared to rainfall and depleted dD and d18O values of groundwater indicate that recharge of the aquifers is occurring during intense rainfall events when rapid infiltration occurs. Evapotranspiration then acts to concentrate ionic species prior to recharge. Relationships between the major ion concentration and catchment area, surficial Tertiary cover and distance between recharge and discharge were identified. The results show that these catchment variables combine to determine unique water chemistry for each sub catchment in Karijini National Park. The TDS concentration of the groundwater in the Marra Mamba Iron Formation that hosts the Marandoo ore body is higher than most of the water bodies surrounding the mining area suggesting significant modification or different recharge mechanisms to that of the Karijini groundwater.

The Colorado Mine Safety & Training Program (MSTP), in late 2005, completed and began distributing two new training tools; one geared to underground coal mine foremen and the other to surface aggregate employees. Through strong partnerships with MSHA, Colorado Coal Mine Board of Examiners, Colorado Mining Association and the Colorado Rock Products Association, the MSTP continues to create innovative and interactive training tools for not only Colorado, but for the national mining community. "Although we shoot and produce these materials in Colorado, it's important to us to make sure they are useful nationally," said Bill York-Feirn, MS TP Manager. The interactive DVD program "Underground Mine Foreman Certification Study Guide (Coal)," was completed in October 2005. It won the 2005 Grand Prize at the MSHA National Training Materials Competition in Beaver, West Virginia. [ ] This program is fully based upon the requirements of Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (30 CFR) Parts 48, 50, 70 and 75 for underground coal mine foremen. It contains eight modules plus immediate access to relevant laws in the appendix. Topics covered include: Federal Law, Practical Math Skills, Mine Gases, Ventilation Maps, and scenarios addressing a variety of practical mining concerns. The DVD is designed for self-¬paced study and practice.

The more than 40,000 mining industry professionals that are expected to attend the National Mining Association’s(NMA) MINExpo International2000 trade show and conference will be treated to the exhibition’s largest display ever. The exhibit is expected to cover more than 60,385 m2(650,000 sq ft) and feature more than 1,300 exhibitors. The event is set for Oct. 9-12, 2000 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV. Richard L. Lawson, NMA’s president and chief executive officer, said, “MINExpo 2000 will showcase everything that mining is proudest of. This is the largest premier mining exposition in the world.” MINExpo is held every four years.

"INTRODUCTION In February 1945, Captain (now Commodore) W. G. Greeman, U. S. N., Director, Naval Petroleum and Oil 3hale Reserves, requested the Bureau of Mines to assist the Navy in its wartime development of Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1, Elk Hills field, Calif., to assure adequate supplies of petroleum products in the Pacific theatre. Unit Operation 4/,engineers desired pressure volume-temperature and viscosity data on the reservoir oil in the shallow oil zone to augment data previously obtained for the purpose of calculating reservoir performance and oil reserves. Accordingly, arrangements were approved by the Operating Committee far, the Bureau of Mines to proceed with a program of field sampling and laboratory determinations designed to obtain the desired information.To carry out the assignment, the Bureau transferred the necessary person¬nel, subsurface pressure, temperature, and sampling instruments, and laboratory equipment for analyzing subsurface oil samples from the Petroleum Experiment Station, Bartlesville, Okla., and the San Francisco, Calif., office and set up a temporary field headquarters in the Elk Hills. The program of work as out-lined by Unit Operation required the 6 months period March-August 1945 to complete during which time individual reports comprising data on pressure-volume-temperature relationships and reservoir oil viscosities as determined on subsurface oil samples and recombined oil and gas samples for 5 selected wells were submitted to Unit Operation.This report is a summary compilation of the data contained in the original reports supplemented by correlations of some of the physical properties of the reservoir oil with the A.P.I. gravities of the produced oil. The report also includes material-balance calculations relative to one of the oil horizons in the shallow zone. The Bureau of Mines believes that publication of the results of these analyses is a worthwhile contribution to the petroleum literature and of particular interest to the California industry."

Deposits of the Reefton Goldfield, West Coast, New Zealand, are hosted on N-NE striking, upright folds of the Greenland Group. High-grade quartz lodes are hosted on axial planar shears, typically have short strike lengths, and form shoots that pitch steeply on the hosting shears. Deposits within the field area of a detailed structural study share these characteristics. Field mapping and microstructural analysis have demonstrated that the Greenland Group was affected by a multideformational sequence. Gold mineralisation is hosted on shears axial planar to the F2 folds, but occurred during a subsequent deformation event (D4). Deformation during D4 resulted from N-NE directed shortening, near parallel to the trend of the F2 folds. This event produced F4 kink folds that were accommodated by layer parallel slip on S2 parallel shears, gold mineralisation during D4 being confined to the dilational hinges of F4 kink folds. The semi-brittle nature of D4 allowed the formation of stockwork veining and disseminated mineralisation within the F4 hinge zones. Most deposits within the goldfield are similar to those within the field area, and are interpreted to have been mineralised during D4. The two largest known deposits within the goldfield, however, are distinct. The Blackwater Deposit, striking parallel to the hosting folds, has a combined strike length of 1 km. The Globe-Progress Deposit is hosted on an E-W striking discordant shear in which a brittle zone of disseminated mineralisation encompasses high-grade quartz lodes. The characteristics that distiguish the Globe and Blackwater deposits may be due to formation before and after D4 respectively. Detailed field mapping in the vicinity of known deposits throughout the goldfield will further refine the relationships between the F2 folds, later deformations and the localisation of ore deposits. Additional mapping may also help constrain the position, orientation and extent of additional orebodies.

L 'objectif principal de SIDBEC-NORMINES est de produire six millions de tonnes de boulettes d'oxyde de fer par année, dont trois millions auront une faible teneur en silice afin de répondre aux exigences de la réduction directe. Les installations de SIDBEC-NORMINES sont adjacentes aux installations portuaires de la Compagnie Minière Québec Cartier, à l'est de la ville de Port-Cartier. L 'ensemble est conçu pour produire les deux types de boulettes avec deux circuits d'agglomération installes en parallèle. La production de concentré enrichi (68% Fe et plus) est obtenue dans une usine d'enrichissement utilisant le precédé de séparation magnétique hum ide ahaute intensite (separateurs Jones). "A brief summary of the different membrane separation options currently available to the mining industry will be presented and discussed. The processes described involve operating membrane plants on the following applications: pregnant leach solutions (PLS) in the copper and gold industries, fractionation and concentration of metals and acids in refineries, and wastewater treatments to meet state-of-the-art surface discharge criteria.Included is a specific discussion on cost savings resulting from an operating membrane treatment system of nearly 3,500 m3/hr barren water relative to the prior, conventional precipitation practice at a major heap leach gold mine. This Engineered Membrane Separation® (EMS®) plant has produced water for six years that has met all standards for direct discharge into the environment, and captures and returns to the operation valuable minerals and solvents which were not previously being extracted in the Merrill-Crowe process.INTRODUCTIONMembrane technology has been available for more than 35 years, but has been used sparingly in the mining industry. However, recent developments in polymer chemistry, spiral-wound element design and construction, water clarification pretreatment equipment and techniques, and an expanded understanding of membrane fouling and cleaning techniques have dramatically improved the reliability and robustness of membrane-based systems for potential use by the mining industry.In the past 15 years large operating plants have successfully demonstrated the use of this “new” membrane technology to include the separation of pay-metals from large-volume acid and cyanide heap leach mining solutions containing copper, zinc, gold and silver. Moreover, variations on these same membrane technologies are ideally suited to fractionations that add value to processing fluids from refineries, like separating metals from acids or concentrating acids and producing high-quality process fluids."

A joint venture of Ben C. Gerwick Inc., Sverdrup (now Jacobs) and DMJM (now DMJM Harris) designed the $779 mill seismic upgrade of the Richmond - San Rafael Bridge over the San Pablo Bay in the San Francisco Bay Area and provided construction support to Caltrans. Construction of the marine foundation retrofit was completed by a joint venture of Tudor Saliba/Tidewater/Koch-Skanska and their subcontractors: Pomeroy Precast Construction, AGRA Foundations, Dutra Construction and Vortex Divers. Construction management and inspection was performed by Caltrans with support of various consultants.

In addition to the compliance aspects of operations, due diligence will be discussed.1.0 INTRODUCTIONThe impact of mining projects on the environment is an area of major concern to the public, governmental agencies and mining companies. Due to the ever increasing pressure on the government by special interest groups and the public, governments have implemented legislation to control potential environmental impact of mining, from the exploration phase through to close-out. By not planning for environmental issues during all phases of a mining operation, unavoidable delays and retrofitted environmental programmes will be expensive and cause projects to be delayed, which, ultimately, may cause the abandonment of a mining prospect. Most jurisdictions require at least one full year of background environmental data. Therefore, many thousands of dollars are wasted as construction is interfered with or held up due to data collection. This may be avoided by a thousand dollars worth of sample being collected and analyzed early in the project."

The Epping to Chatswood Rail Line project is the largest publicly funded infrastructure project in New South Wales. Construction commenced in November2002 with opening scheduled for 2008. The work includes 13 route km of twin TBM driven 7.2 m diameter lined running tunnel, three cross-overs and three new underground stations. The new stations have platform caverns of 20m span with similarly proportioned concourse caverns alongside. The ground is bedded sand stone and shale with high horizontal stresses. Predicted stress-relief induced ground movements during staged excavation led to innovative use of rock anchors for permanent support.

Since 198 1, Federal mining law has required every miner working in underground coal mines to have a self-contained, self-rescuer (SCSR) available for use in emergencies. Some miners that have escaped from fires using SCSR's have reported that they had to remove their mouthpiece to talk during escape, thus compromising the protection afforded by the SCSR. If miners are in thick smoke during an escape, they may have trouble if they become separated from their group. The visibility can be so poor that separation can occur at very short distances. To address this problem, two-way, FM radios were built into the SCSR to improve the ability to communicate should the miners be separated over relatively short distances. The SCSR prototypes built and used in testing included both two-way radios and improved mouthpieces. Comparison studies were conducted using combinations of the new and old mouthpieces, and trials using the radio or not using the radio. Subjective judgments indicate that communication ability was significantly improved using the prototype devices. Communication problems have been encountered with teams using standard voice- powered communications systems. Mine rescue teams perform rescue and recovery work under extremely hazardous conditions, life lines are a standard part of mine rescue team equipment. Leaky feeder and quasi-leaky feeder life line communications systems provide significant improvements over standard systems. These improved systems allow all members of the team to communicate with each other and their base of operations. These innovations will significantly enhance the safety of mine rescue operations.

Tin in ores containing 0·025 to 1·5 per cent tin can be determined polarographically by the reduction of the chlorostannite ion at the dropping mercury electrode in 2M hydrochloric acid solution containing 15 per cent ammonium chloride. The tin is separated from interfering elements by distillation as the tetrabromide and collected from the distillate by co-precipitation with aluminium hydroxide. The method can detect 0·01 per cent tin in ore.INTRODUCTIONAn iodimetric method, suitable for routine analysis of titrating tin in concentrations down to 1 per cent, has been available for some years (Low, Weinig, and Schoder, 1939).As concentrations fall below 1 per cent tin, there is increasing difficulty in obtaining a distinct end point due to large amounts of iron and silica normally present after fusion of the ore. Since concentrations of tin down to 0·02 per cent are significant in ore dressing products it was necessary to examine methods to determine such low concentrations, and to adapt these to tin ores containing a wide variety of other minerals.EXPERIMENTALDigestion and separationCassiterite, the principal tin mineral, is refractory but readily attacked by a sodium peroxide flux to yield soluble sodium stannate. In a recognized procedure, a sample of ore is mixed with up to 15 g of sodium peroxide in an iron crucible and swirled over the full heat of a Meker burner for 7 min. "Spodumene mineral is a source of lithium for lithium ion batteries. Thus, the production of a spodumene concentrate with an approximate grade of 6% Li2O is targeted. Traditionally, spodumene is concentrated by froth flotation using fatty acid as the collector. Amine collector can also be used to float mica ahead of spodumene as required or feldspar from the spodumene tailings. Slimes have a negative effect on spodumene flotation and they are commonly separated by scrubbing and de-sliming prior to spodumene flotation. The main losses in spodumene flotation typically occur in cyclone overflow, scrubbing slimes, spodumene flotation tailings and mica concentrate. In recent years, dense media separation (DMS) is the main concentrating process in Australian spodumene operations. In these operations, DMS is efficient at generating coarse grain concentrates and rejecting large portions of silicate gangue, thereby directly reducing the milling cost. The ore should be crushed to 3/8” or coarser while further crushing is possibly necessary on the middling particles to scalp further spodumene. The DMS feed should be classified to remove fines (typically -0.5 mm particles). The final middlings and undersize fractions could then be processed by flotation. The main requirement in DMS operations is to have good spodumene liberation at relatively large grain size. This paper reviews the most significant DMS and flotation parameters in spodumene beneficiation. The treatments of different minerals in the spodumene ore are also addressed.INTRODUCTION A number of laboratory/pilot plant programs have been recently conducted at the SGS Lakefield site, sponsored by different clients. The main objective has been to develop a process flowsheet to generate a spodumene concentrate containing 6.0% or higher Li2O (~75% spodumene) suitable for producing lithium carbonate by a hydrometallurgical process. Depending on spodumene liberation size, dense media separation (DMS) can be an attractive option to produce a final high grade concentrate and to reduce the mass to be treated in the flotation circuit. In such a case, crushing would typically be performed in stages, with DMS separation to recover a spodumene concentrate and reject gangue minerals following each stage. DMS middlings and -0.5 mm fines can be processed by flotation to further recover spodumene. In the flotation process, coarse stage grinding minimizes the grinding cost and formation of slimes. In the majority of cases, a grind size (K80) of approximately 200 microns is sufficient for flotation. After primary grinding, mica, if present in an appreciable amount, should be floated to minimize interference with spodumene flotation. Desliming after scrubbing and high density conditioning are the key process operations prior to spodumene flotation. Spodumene can then be floated from silicate gangue minerals with a fatty acid or a mixture of fatty acid and petroleum sulfonate at slightly alkaline pH. Subsequently, feldspars can then be floated from the spodumene tailings."

Today, with the growth of the team concept in industry, a mutual-caring (interdependent) approach to workplace safety is gaining wide acceptance. This presentation compares characteristics and results of the three progressive levels of safety responsibility and explains how to develop a successful interdependent program. The presentation will also detail the common principals that are necessary for safety excellence under any of the management styles.

The combined 78th Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 66th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium was held April 19 and 20, 2005, in Duluth, MN. More than 300 mining professionals, including engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers, from throughout the United States and eastern Canada attended the meeting. This year’s theme was “Global Demand: A Window of Opportunity.” The meeting included a keynote address, technical presentations and a trade show. The atmosphere at this year’s meeting was upbeat. The iron ore mining industry in Minnesota is experiencing one of its biggest turnarounds in history. Because of greater demand, iron ore prices increased 20 percent during 2004 and 71.5 percent so far in 2005.
