An implicit numerical method is presented for simulating the differential and algebraic relations governing one-dimensional three-phase flow in porous media. The method is based upon compositional representation of the hydrocarbon system. Variable physical properties and water-oil capillary forces are included in the formulation; however, the effect of gravity is ignored. The effects of changing composition and mass transfer are considered through the use of known phase behavior concepts and correlations. The differential and algebraic equations and the numeric approximations to these equations are presented, and the computing algorithm is discussed in detail. This method is used to simulate a single-phase, two hydrocarbon-component gas displacement laboratory experiment. The method is also applied in simulating a solution gas drive and a gas injection problem using a reservoir oil represented as a nine-component mixture. For comparative purposes, the latter two problems also are examined with a one-dimensional volumetric model. The results of the simulation of the laboratory experiment demonstrate the relevance of this method to problems wherein the effects of mass transfer significantly enter the displacement process. The comparison of the results of the volumetric and compositional methods applied to a reservoir system illustrates not only the advantages and benefits derived from examining the hydrocarbon system composition, but also the necessity of this approach in application to a general reservoir problem. INTRODUCTION The advent of large memory, high-speed digital computers enabled reservoir engineers and mathematicians to pool their knowledge in the development of sophisticated techniques for the prediction of oil and gas reservoir performance. These techniques have progressed from volumetric and trend analysis calculations to the development of "mathematical models", or reservoir simulators. These latter models, in general, utilize finite difference approximations to the rather complex partial differential equations that mathematically describe the physics and thermodynamics of fluid flow in porous media. Many forms of this "model" type are available today, and much of the recent literature has been devoted to either improving known methods or developing new techniques for use in these prediction methods. The more advanced techniques in use at this time consist of the solution of differential and algebraic relations that describe a reservoir geometry in one, two or three dimensions and that incorporate reservoir hydrocarbon and water fluid systems that obey specified physical laws, having properties that might easily be measured in the laboratory. This type of model utilizes formation volume factors and other volumetric data, expressed directly as functions of pressure, to represent the reservoir fluid system. Experience gained with this type of simulator, commonly known as a "beta-factor model", has indicated that the approach has many outstanding defects, most of them due to the assumption that those properties measured in the laboratory completely describe the behavior of the fluid system throughout the life of the project under study. Flinders Mines is an iron ore explorer and developer with a tenement package located in the Hamersley Ranges region of Western Australia, approximately 70 km north of Tom Price. Exploration over the past five years has identified a Global Resource in excess of 900 Mt at a grade of 55.2 per cent Fe (+50 per cent Fe cut-off). This resource is spread across multiple deposits and has been divided into a number of mineralisation type domains. These domains are comprised of transported hematite rich detrital iron deposits (DID) and goethite dominant channel iron deposits (CID) as well as in situ bedded iron deposits (BID). The BID at PIOP is low in alumina and silica with a high calcined iron content making it an attractive exploration target. BID exploration techniques include a combination of mapping, structural analysis, downhole gamma logging and 3D geological modelling. Relationships identified between existing BID mineralisation, geology and structure has aided in targeting additional mineralisation across the tenement and highlighted other previously untested areas that warrant further investigation.CITATION:Tylkowski, L N, Corlis, N J, McDonald, G D, Petts, A E, Jennings, M F and Thomas, B J, 2013. Electrical impedance tomographic methods have been applied to a variety of mineral and chemical processes in the laboratory and on plant. This review paper surveys technical developments in measurement methods to enable quantitative extraction of key process information in the form of mapping of concentration profiles, mixture homogeneity and suspension velocity. The methods for determining velocity are summarized, since this is of especial interest when applied to opaque systems where most conventional optically based measurements fail. A recent significant development is the use of ultra-high speed measurement that now allows velocity vectors to be extracted for fast moving mixtures and fluids (up to several metres per second). New data are reported pertinent to low and high solids concentration flow in pipelines. Use of the methods offer improvements to design of such systems but also points to the use of tomographic electrical sensor as online flow measurement and fault detection. This offers new opportunities for applications and benefits in the design and monitoring of mineral slurries and sludges.

The purpose of this program is to demonstrate the feasibility and practicality of noise control for secondary and tertiary crushers in surface non-coal mining plants and mills. It is a part of the broad Bureau of Mines program to reduce noise in mines to levels mandated in the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act. Utilizing the results of previous contractual research efforts in which noise levels of secondary crushers had been measured, two noise enclosures were designed and evaluated for the REXNORD Symons 7-ft diameter secondary and tertiary crushers installed at the Jackson County Iron Company, in Black River Falls, Wisconsin. The first enclosure had a circular shape following closely that of the crusher and was built up entirely of quick-release panels which can be handled by the crusher operator alone. The second enclosure was octogonal in shape and can be rapidly removed, partially or totally using an overhead crane. Both enclosures fully satisfy the noise reduction objectives and permit daily and long-term maintenance of the crushers. Cost analyses show the cost of the enclosure to be less than 10 per cent of the cost of the crusher, the cost of the octagonal enclosure being estimated at only 60 percent of that of the circular one, e. g. $15,000 against $25,000. It is concluded that the octagonal enclosure best meets the needs of the Jackson County Mining Company and it is recommended that an experimental enclosure be built at the earliest possible time, as proof-of-concept.

The development and introduction of a preventive maintenance scheme in the coke ovens department, coal preparation section, of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., Newcastle steelworks, is described together with its operation and the results achieved during the first 12 months.'fhe scheme consists essentially of an engineering analysis of the plant to establish maintenance schedules, and to record the details on reference cards.Items are reviewed progressively and a weekly work schedule is prepared, from which work orders are passed on to the maintenance foremen. These foremen in turn originate action orders and issue inspection sheets as required. Results are then reported back to the maintenance planner and used to revise norms, practices, and cycles.INTRODUCTIONWhat is maintenance? Some people consider maintenance to be the work involved in putting things together again after they have fallen apart. The author regards it as the mechanical care and repair of plant machinery and equipment to keep it operating in sound mechanical condition, without undue interference with production processes.Maintenance may be organized or haphazard, and, too often, what has been fondly imagined to be nicely controlled and organized maintenance proves, under pressure, to be more correctly described as haphazard. Haphazard maintenance deals with breakdowns as they occur, and frequently finds itself confronted with more breakdowns than can be handled. At a regional scale, the Otago Schist has been divided into textural zones, metamorphic zones, structural transposition zones, and terranes and lithologic associations. Each of these subdivisions reveals aspects of the internal structure of the lithologically monotonous Otago Schist but, to date, a map of the schist derived directly from structural data has not been made. In the present study, digitised structural data from the QMAP GIS were used to make a form line map of Schist foliation which, in turn (and using certain non-unique guiding assumptions), was used to construct a provisional foliation thickness map of the Otago Schist. Contours of dominant foliation (Sp) thickness have been drawn from 4 kIn above to 16 km below the reference level of the Caples-Torlesse terrane boundary in the schist structural pile. A recent revision of the Otago Schist textural zone classification has shown that the grain size of metamorphic white micas increases progressively with textural grade. There also appears to be a correlation between schist mica grain size and foliation thickness. Using mica grain size, it may eventually be feasible to establish the vertical structural position of samples in greenschist facies parts of the schist pile to a precision of ¦ 1 km or better, even if they are in inliers or fault-bounded blocks. Foliation thickness and mica grain size are thus potentially useful tools for research and exploration in the Otago Schist in that they assist with structural interpolation and extrapolation. Even at this early stage of application they can be used to provide hitherto unobtainable, semi-quantitative estimates of displacement on Mesozoic and Cenozoic faults and folds.

Where the equipment, technique and materials are available for the construction of large diameter rock socketted piles, this is frequently the most economical and environmentally acceptable method of supporting very large concentrated foundation loads in geoglogically appropriate areas. This paper outlines the current approaches in Australia to design and installation of large diameter rock socketted piles. The equipment and procedures described generally reflect those developed or used by Vibro-Pile (Aust.), a company which, while installing the usual range of driven and bored piles, specializes in the design and construction of large diameter rock socketted piles and possesses special expertise in drilling in high strength rock. A high capacity crane attached drill for large diameter drilling in rock is briefly described. Discussed in detail are the construction techniques employed and structural and geomechanical design methods adopted.

"A 15 cm diameter by 732 cm height, fully automated pilot column was installed in the Agnico-Eagle’s Laronde concentrator (Québec), for evaluating the performance of newly developed sensors and advanced process control algorithms. For eventual comparison purposes, the pilot column is continuously fed with the same slurry feeding the copper-circuit third cleaner column. It is equipped with electrical conductivity-based sensors for estimating the three variables used in the multi-variable control algorithm under evaluation: froth depth, fraction of wash water underneath the interface and gas hold-up. Froth depth is regulated using a PI controller while a predictive controller is formulated as the minimization of the tracking errors of gas hold-up and bias rate, keeping several operating constraints between their practical upper and lower limits. In particular, an unreachable high set point of gas hold-up can be selected in order to maximize the bubble surface area available for particle collection, while maintaining bias rate above a minimum value required for froth cleaning. The proposed strategy may indirectly help optimizing flotation column operation by using these secondary variables, without the implementation of a real-time optimization layer.INTRODUCTION Flotation columns have already been used for more than 30 years, mainly in cleaning stages, as a result of their froth washing capabilities. Despite their widespread usage, the measurement of some pertaining variables and their use for automatic control is rather scarce. Among the most important variables directly related to the process metallurgy (concentrate grade and recovery), froth depth (hf) is the only one normally monitored and controlled. Even though commercial sensors are available, gas hold-up (eg), a variable directly related to concentrate recovery, is seldom measured and never controlled. Another important variable, bias rate (Jb) responsible for concentrate cleaning, is simply not measured at all, as there is no commercial sensor available. Therefore, besides froth depth, continuous monitoring of process variables is limited to flow rates (gas, feed, tailings, wash water), i.e. to manipulated variables. Some new available sensors have been industrially tested, e.g. the Sonar-TracTM for eg (O'Keefe, Viega & Fernald, 2007) and the McGill hold-up sensor (Tavera & Escudero, 2002). Others, for bias rate and frother concentration, have been successfully validated at laboratory scale by Laval’s LOOP researchers (Maldonado, Desbiens, del Villar & Chirinos, 2008b; Maldonado, Desbiens, del Villar & Aguilera, 2010a). Some devices have been extensively used for monitoring bubble size and space distri-bution, e.g. McGill bubble viewer (Gomez & Finch, 2007) and others."

Several deep Swedish cut-and-fill mines experience severe ground control problems, including roof collapse and wall sloughing, as a result of variable rock quality and high in situ stresses. A project to examine the problem included two main areas. The first was prediction of mining conditions at depth and the adaptation of cut-and-fill mining to such conditions; the second was the assessment and improvement of support methods at present and future depths. Simple, elastic, mine-scale numerical models were used to optimise stope sequencing and more detailed, stope-scale models to simulate the failure processes around a stope and the interaction of rock mass and support. Kristineberg was chosen for testing and calibration of the predictive methods because of its long history of severe ground conditions and the large base of observational and monitoring data available for comparison. Horizontal cut and fill was found technically suitable to depths beyond 1 000 m and economically viable if ore value covers support costs. Stability can be achieved with the present support technology down to 1 000 m but the 7-strand 15.2 mm cables have poor deformation properties (5% failure strain) compared with rebar rock bolts (17%). Reducing the intervals between levels from 100 m to 50 m will cut support costs and improve production reliability and capacity. Simulation of sill-pillar mining indicated that conditions would be most severe when pillar height was reduced to 15-20 m; mining of a sill pillar has been carried out successfully to the last 3 m, whose extraction is planned for the near future

WHEN THE BUREAU OF MINES was created in 1910, the organic act had as one of its main provisions the following: That it shall be the province of said bureau and its director, under the direction of the Secretary of the Interior, to make diligent investigation of the methods of mining, especially in relation to the safely of miners and the appliances best adapted to prevent accidents, the possible improvement of renditions under which mining operations are carried on, the treatment of ores and other mineral substances, the use of explosives and electricity, the prevention of accidents, and other inquiries and technologic investigations pertinent to said industries, and from tinge to time make such public reports of the work, investigations, and information obtained as the Secretary of said department may direct, with the recommendations of such bureau. The nationwide nature of the health and safety work of the Bureau of Mines has given its representatives an opportunity to study and report on matters pertaining to health and safety in mines and related operations from the time the Bureau was established to the present. Regular annual reports and numerous additional papers and reports have been published each year to place on record and to make available the information gathered. While the basic purpose of this bulletin is to describe health and safety reports for the period January 1947 through June 1955, a selected number of earlier publica¬tions that are believed pertinent for reference purposes are included.

Barometric pressure changes affect air density, leading to change in the mass of the gas in the gob. When the barometric pressure decreases, the volume of gas in the gob expands, while the volume of gas contracts when the barometric pressure increases, causing the gob to breathe out and in. Although the concept of gob ?breathing? is simple, its effect on spontaneous heating of coal in the gob area is not clear. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted to model the spontaneous heating of coal in longwall gob area under measured barometric pressure changes. A single longwall panel using a bleederless ventilation system was simulated. If there is no barometric pressure change, the intake airflow rate is equal to the return airflow rate. When the barometric pressure changes, these two airflow rates are no longer equal, and the difference between the two airflow rates represents the airflow rate the gob breathes in and out. The effect of inflow and outflow of gas on the potential spontaneous heating in the gob was investigated using the CFD model developed in our previous study. The effect of barometric pressure changes on the spontaneous heating was found to be dependent on the gob permeability and the coal oxidation rate. The effect of barometric pressure changes on oxygen concentrations in the gob was also examined.

Amtrak made a decision to replace an aging bascule bridge with a vertical lift bridge for their crossing of the Thames River in New London, Connecticut. The new lift bridge occupies the same alignment and shares the same foundations as the bascule span. During construction the deep foundation caisson supporting the bascule span settled and tilted. Investigation into possible reasons revealed interesting historical facts, both of the construction of the innovative open well caisson foundations and of the state-of-the-art in tremie concrete placing methods in use at the turn of the century. This paper describes both of these topics.

A thermal neutron irradiation technique using a mCf neutron source has been developed and applied to thp.simultaneous determination of iron and aluminium (expressed as AI2O3) in iron ore fines (-6 mm particle size) on a moving rubber conveyor belt.While the determination of iron with this technique is based on the use of a NaI(TI) detector to monitor the characteristic prompt gamma rays (7.64 MeV) emitted by thermal neutron capture reactions in the iron, the etermination of AI2O3 is based on the use of a second Nal(Tl) detector to monitor the characteristic gamma rays (1.78 MeV) emitted after thermal neutron activation of the aluminium. The second detector is located downstream from the first. Although the speed of the conveyor belt has no direct effect on the iron measurements, it must not exceed about 3 m/min if good accuracy is required for the AI2O3 measurements. Consequently an auxiliary conveyor belt is required in order to avoid interference with normal ore processing.Dynamic trials of the technique, using 1500 kg samples of ore on a 460 mm-wide rubber conveyor belt moving at 1.7 m/min, have demonstrated that the method can achieve accuracies of 0.7% Fe and 0.1% AI2O3. At the present stage of development, it is recommended that lump ore be crushed to a particle size of 6 mm before analysis.In addition to iron and AI2O3 determinations, measurements of total moisture content and bulk density are possible. The determination of Si02 is also feasible, but a separate fast neutron source (e.g., Am-Be) and a separate gamma ray detector are required.

Radioisotopes of selenium (se78) and tellurium (Te123) were successfully employed by the Bureau of Mines as tracers in metallurgical research directed to developing improved methods for volatilizing these elements from low-tenor raw materials. Prior research, guided and controlled by conventional analytical methods, was seriously hampered by inconsistent selenium and tellurium analyses, by the slowness of the conventional chemical methods, and by the poor accountability of these volatile elements in test products. Methods were devised and evaluated for admixing the radioactive tracer with typical raw materials and then following the deportment of the selenium and tellurium by radiometric methods with occasional chemical analysis checks. These techniques were found unusually effective in (1) quantifying the completeness and the rate of volatilization of selenium and tellurium while heating the raw materials at different rates to different temperatures and (2) accurately tracing and quantifying the distribution of minute amounts of these volatile elements in the several products made by high-temperature treatment and in the several units comprising the experimental equipment.

"Steel manufacturers have noticed a decided tendency on the part of many of their customers to become more exacting in their steel specifications. Under these conditions, the steel must not only meet the specifications of physical properties (tensile strength, reduction of area, elongation, impact strength, grain size, normality, etc.) and the chemical analyses, but must also pass the inspection test of ""cleanliness.""By cleanliness is commonly meant the absence of oxide and sulphide inclusions. Other foreign particles such as furnace or ladle slag, ladle and runner brick, etc., must also be absent. The determination of cleanliness at present is usually made by microscopic inspection or macroetching.The rejection of steel for lack of cleanliness is increasing, out cleanliness is one of the most difficult requirements for the manufacturer to fill. The reason for this is that every steel inspector has a different conception of a. clean steel. A material which does not pass the examination of one inspector way be regarded as entirely satisfactory by the metallurgist of an¬other company. The cause of this confusion and disagreement concerning the definition of a clean or a dirty steel is simply that as yet no standardized procedure for the determination of impurities has been proposed and generally accepted, since many variables are encountered which interfere with the development of a satisfactory method. An idea of the complexity of this situation will be obtained from the following pages.A Survey of Proposed Analytical MethodsAlthough no analytical method has been accepted, many procedures have been proposed, as may be seen in Table 1. Therein are listed 16 of the better-known processes, pith references to the work of their originators, their mechanisms of determination, and their applicabilities. Among these is included the electrolytic method developed by one of the present authors, and some comparison between this and previously proposed procedures may be obtained by a study of the table. It appears that this new method Las many advantages over the others, and this paper presents a critical Study of its value."

The U.S. cement industry experienced its best year ever during 2004 in terms of production and shipments of cement. Clinker, portland and masonry cements production and shipments were up considerably. Clinker production as reported to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was 87.75 Mt (96.73 million st), an increase of 5.4 percent. Gray and white portland cement production from domestic and imported clinker was estimated to be 91.6 Mt (101 million st), up 5 Mt (5.5 million st) from 2003.

Australian rutile and zircon concentrates are refined raw materials and not manufactured products. The composition and properties of the grains are therefore fixed by nature. Specifications and assay certificates should take this into account by eliminating unnecessary provisions which only increase the time and cost of analysis.INTRODUCTIONThe raw material from which Australian rutile and zircon concentrates are isolated is beach sand on the coast of New South Wales and Southern Queensland. The principal current operations are in an area between Sydney and Brisbane.The sands consist principally of quartz particles, but they contain from 1 per cent to 50 per cent of a mixture of heavy minerals, including zircon, rutile, ilmenite, monazite, leucoxenic grains, chrome spinel, chromite, garnets, corundum, topaz, brown spinel, olivine, epidote, clinozoisite, tourmaline, magnetite, hematite, and cassiterite. A mineral grain finder is described which is easily constructed to fit onto the stage of a standard reflected light ore microscope.The device is most useful in relocating particular grains or mineral associations on 30 mm diameter polished sections. The use of the grain finder in the teaching of ore microscopy is outlined.
