In the 19th century, mining in northern Chile was of great economic importance. Today, the ruinsof the copper smelters and abundant fragments of refractory bricks from their furnaces remain. Therefractory materials have not been previously studied. the origin, physical and chemical properties, and compressive strength of 10 different samples of historical refractory bricks collected on-site were investigated. The characterization results showed that the bricks are silico-aluminous, unlike the magnesium-chromium bricks used by current foundries. It was determined that 90% of them were produced in the UK and 10% were manufactured in Chile. The phases present are mullite, quartz, cristobalite, and tridymite, and the chemical composition corresponds mainly to SiO2. The compressive strength of the historical bricks is similart to those currently used,. These results may contribute to the knowledge of the 19th century mining and metallurgical historical heritage of Chile and the UK.

Manganiferous carbonate slates of the Cuyuna range, which are part of the unoxidized thin-budded iron formation, represent a large potential source of manganese. This report details recent bench-scale research by the Federal Bureau of Mines in applying mineral-dressing techniques to these materials in order to investigate their potential uses. Work outlined in the report was directed toward the production of concentrates usable as iron-blast furnace feed, but an equally important objective might have been to furnish an enriched feed for extractive processes for recovering manganese. Flotation concentrates were prepared that contained 11.1 percent manganese, 27.8 percent iron, and 12.2 percent silica, with recoveries of 73 percent of the manganese and 48 percent of the iron. Calculated analysis for a simulated sinter suggests a product containing 16.0 percent manganese, 40.2 percent iron, and 17.6 percent silica, with 31 percent recovery of the dry weight of the ore. The silica in the flotation concentrates was due to quartz and iron silicates. Substantial quantities of the iron silicates (stilpnomelane and smaller amounts of minnesotaite) were present in the slate, and the need to reject these minerals limited the recovery of iron. The sintered flotation concentrate would be usable as ferruginous manganese ore for iron blast-furnace feed because of its favorable manganese silica ratio. The unsintered flotation concentrates, representing 45 percent of the feed weight and containing manganese enriched in the ratio of 1.6 : 1, also could be used as feed to processes for extracting manganese.

BINARY- alloy phases having the A15-type crystal structure have been described as occurring at a simple and more or less invariant stoichiometric composition (A3B) which corresponds to the relative number of atoms occupying each of the two crystallographi lattice sites in this structure.1,2 It is frequently assumed, therefore, that each crystallographic site is occupied exclusively by one kind of atom. In most cases, however, there have been insufficient experimental data to establish whether atomic ordering is, in fact, complete. Recent studies have shown that binary A15-type phases are sometimes stable over an appreciable composition range3''* and, occasionally, the composition range of stability does not even include the "ideal" A3B stoichiometric composition.5-7 We have observed the existence of nonstoichiometric A15-type phases in the binary systems Cr-Pt and Cr-Os. This has not been reported in previous work on these alloy systems.1,8-11 A series of alloys, each weighing approximately 30 g, was prepared by are-melting in an Ar-He atmosphere using 99.999 pct Cr, 99.999 pct Os, and 99.99 pct Pt as starting materials. Each alloy was melted four times with a total weight loss of less than 1 pct. The stoichiometric (A3B) alloys were sealed in evacuated quartz tubes and annealed at 1200°C for periods of time ranging from 3 days to 2 months. Examination of the alloy microstructures revealed that little change had occurred over this time interval and it was therefore assumed that the microstructures were fairly representative of equilibrium conditions. No evidence of contamination was observed although there was apparently some loss of chromium which was confined to a thin layer at the surface of the specimens. The quartz tubes were quenched from the annealing temperature into cold water. X-ray diffraction and metallographic examination of the stoichiometric alloys revealed an estimated 10 to 30 pct of second phases which were tentatively identified as phases previously reported in these binary-alloy systems.8-11 A second series of alloys was prepared by mixing -325 mesh metal powders having a nominal purity of 99.9 pct and compressing these mixed powders in a cylindrical die at a pressure of 43,000 psi. These alloys, each weighing 15 g, and some of the arc-melted alloys were annealed in a high-temperature vacuum furnace heated by tantalum strips at a pressure of 10-8 Torr and were rapidly cooled by turning off the furnace power. X-ray and metallographic examination of both series of alloys served to establish the composition ranges of the A15-type phases. Although some chromium losses occurred during the vacuum annealing, they were largely confined to a thin layer on the outer surfaces of the samples. It was established that the A15 phases occur in the Cr-Pt system at 21 ± 1 at. pct Pt after 1 week at 1200°C and in the Cr-Os system at 28 ± 1 at. pctOs after 1 day at 1400°C (see Table I). We also observed that an arc-melted stoichiometric (A3B) alloy in the Cr-Ir system was single-phase (A15-type) in the "as-cast" condition in agreement with previous work.8,13 In addition we obtained a sample of the Cr-Os A15-type phase from Argonne National Laboratory. This alloy contained less than 1 pct second phase12 and was submitted to a density measurement. The density measurement yielded a value of 11.14 g per cu cm in comparison to a theoretical value of 11.25 g per cu cm calculated using the observed lattice constant (4.6806Å) of this alloy. The uncertainty in measurement was 0.1 pct but the sample may have contained some cracks or minor imperfections which could account for the low experimental value. We have also studied the atomic ordering in these phases by means of integrated line intensity measurements using thick, flat, rotating powder samples and CuK a radiation in an X-ray diffractometer. We have obtained order parameters of 0.90 for the Cr-Pt phase, 0.89 for the Cr-Ir phase, and 0.64 for the Cr-Os phase using the formula: where s is the usual Bragg and Williams order parameter, ra is the fraction of chromium atoms in A sites, and FA is the fraction of chromium atoms in the alloy. The values obtained are estimated to be accurate within ±4 pct. If the unusually small value for the order parameter of the Cr-Os A15 phase were due to the existence of lattice vacancies on the "B-atom" sites, then a density of 10.04 g per cu cm would be expected in contrast to the observed value of 11.14 g per cu cm. Open pits and quarries are the major sources of all "hard rock" tonnage mined today. Normally, ore is fractured from the pit face by blasting and then truck-hauled to a primary crusher where processing begins; over- burden (or waste) is generally truck-hauled from the pit to dump areas. Truck haulage of blasted ore and overburden accounts for some 25 to 50 percent of total mining costs in a typical open pit and commonly is the largest single cost factor. Obviously then, cost reduction efforts should properly focus on improving existing haulage systems and developing new breakthrough techniques for material transport. Continuous flow systems for large tonnages ordinarily will result in a lower cost than batch systems such as truck or rail haulage. Continuous flow with pipelines for liquids and slurries, or conveyors for medium to coarse dry materials (in the -8 in. range) are the accepted economic answers for bulk materials handling over reasonable distances.

"Tamano Smelter or Hibi Kyodo Smelting Co. Ltd. is operating with the Tamano Type Flash Smelting Furnace method which is a flash smelting furnace without slag cleaning furnace but which can discharge a slag equivalent to that from the slag cleaning furnace and with the development or coke combustion technology which is the basis of this world's only one type flash smelting furnace process, the smelter exhibits a low operation cost under high productivity operation. Utilizing this experience and improving it we have developed and put to practice an operation guide system using a general purpose computer in order to further establish s stable operation. In this paper these improvements are described. Background of System DevelopmentWith the recent rapid progress of general purpose computers and improvements in their performance an environment for the use or computer in process simulation at low cost and simple operation has been established. If an accurate operation simulation can be done with the Tamano Type Flash Smelting Furnace the merits would be very great and thus we started development of the system. The official name of this system is Computer guide system for Coke Combustion in the T-FSF and taking the initial letters we call it CCCT. We aim to achieve operation with stable mane grade, temperature and slag loss in the furnace by maintaining the most suitable combustion conditions of concentrate and coke in the flash furnace with the assistance of CCCT to the flash smelting furnace operators.Through several production expansion projects clone in the past by oxygen enrichment the copper concentrate treatment quantity and matte grade have increased step by step as shown in Figure I. Following this increase the difference between the operation calculation results al the initial stage of coke combustion and the actual behavior of furnace (matte grade. temperature in the furnace. etc.) gradually became bigger. Further operation procedures taken by different operators against the same phenomenon were sometimes different depending on each individual, which from time to time caused the operation to become unstable. Prior to the development of the system we checked out thoroughly the weak points of operation calculation procedures which were in practice until that time. The results were analyzed and study was carried out to establish a most suitahle operation calculation procedure and finally we reached this system"

AT the Regional meeting in Columbus, Ohio, in September 1949, the authors presented a progress report of the first year's operation with a Hardinge tricone mill in closed circuit with a Dorr hydroscillator. The present report covers our findings on this grinding circuit to January, 1950. In order to clarify our position, the authors wish to state that no invention or discovery is claimed. The Tennessee grinding circuit is simply an engineered arrangement of known equipment arranged to incorporate all of the recognized efficiency factors of comminution as they are known today. As we concluded our first report, it was not clear how effective the Tennessee mode of operation would be on harder ores. The only information we had at that time was that the Bond grindability test at 48-mesh gave 6.04 g of undersize per revolution. A later test on the same sample at 100-mesh reduced this to 2.04 g, which is definitely in the harder ore class, and which makes the reported 8.80 kw-hr per ton of -200-mesh produced a very creditable figure.

A Discussion of the papers of James Gayley, on "The Application of Dry-Air Blast to the Manufacture of Iron" (see Trans., XXXV., 746, 1022, also pp. 315 and 745 of the present volume, and of J. E. Johnson, Jr., on "The Physical Action of the Blast-Furnace," p. 454. Chas. B. Dudley, Altoona, Pa.:—I am not a blast-furnace man, and this always puts me at a disadvantage because I cannot go into the details of the making of iron and steel. I have not the experience, and have to take the statements of other people, so what I say regarding the subject of this paper is not in the sense of an expert. When I first heard of Mr. Gayley's experiments, I said to myself, a I fear they will result in failure, since, apparently, Mr. Gayley has forgotten one chemical fact, namely, that carbon does not combine with oxygen in the absence of mater-vapor." This fact which was so astonishing when it was first brought out some years ago, and which those who are interested may find in the Journal of the Chemical Society of London, for 1885, page 349, and 1894, page 611, led me to think that the drying of the air would be a mistake. The general subject of the influence of water-vapor on chemical action is a large one; but the special point in which we are, for the moment, interested, namely, the influence of water-vapor on the combustion of carbon, was especially treated by Mr. H. B. Baker, in the papers referred to. Apparently, however, as the result of Mr. Gayley's experiments, we are to learn that the amount of moisture still left in the desiccated air is sufficient to secure perfectly satisfactory combustion. In thinking over Mr. Gayley's paper, it occurred to me that there were two alternatives, either of which might be chosen, namely, we might dry the air as Mr. Gayley does, or possibly we might, in a very much easier way, simply saturate the air at a constant temperature, and thus get uniform working and

There are more than 15,000 abandoned mine features in New Mexico. A considerable number of these mines have not been cataloged or assessed for prioritized reclamation efforts. These mine wastes can be examined as a resource of critical minerals. Many of legacy mine waste deposits have undiscovered commodities and critical minerals, due to low recovery processes during past production. In this project, Black Hawk mine wastes in Grant County, New Mexico are examined by thorough mineralogical and geochemical characterization. This project seeks to characterize and estimate the critical minerals in mine wastes of Black Hawk mine, and determine the acid generating potential of mine waste. Identifying and producing critical minerals in New Mexico may directly benefit the U.S economy and national security.

Companies have installed powerful desktops for their personnel and instrumentation and control systems in their plants. These desktops are, in many cases, connected to a company intranet. Still, process engineers have to obtain their data manually. Engineers use process calculations from manually calculated averages from the plant; field operators collect equipment data on log sheets; and maintenance engineers collect critical information on log sheets. All of this information resides in individual machines. What are the strategic tools that will enable collaboration between them? How can operators, engineers, and managers access plant information to proactively increase their effectiveness in process troubleshooting, plant debottleneclung, aligning with business strategic and customer demand, satisfying environmental and safety regulations, developing capital projects, and implementing control strategies? A nonintrusive environment at the desktop is required to provide the process information to these workers. How can value be added to MS Windows technologies with the legacy systems at a minimum cost? There is no straight answer; however, there is a proven framework to leverage the large investments in new technologies. Objects and components are changing the way everyone relates to their computer and networks. Three examples will be described to demonstrate paradigm change. Today, process engineers can access data at the required level of detail for analysis of critical process variables at their desk or remotely. 1. Process Troubleshooting and Analysis: The engineer can develop an inferential calculation, trigger a process advisor to deter- mine the behavior of the units for the last day, and get the population of a set of batches (heats, blocks, rolls, sheets, etc). 2. Process Control and Optimization: The engineer can connect to a process simulator at steady state or a dynamic simulator of the process to evaluate new control strategies or process unit line-ups and use the process simulator as a process observer for fault diagnosis. 3. Collaboration with Accounting and Maintenance: The engineer can review reconciled data and the process mass balances, suggest maintenance cleaning or recalibration of flowmeters, and evaluate key control performance of all advanced controls.

THIS REPORT covers the second in a series of five projects into which the Conowingo tunnel system has been divided for geographical and practical reasons. It outlines the construction work contemplated-to sink two shafts on the line of the main tunnel that are designated the Nos. 9A and 11 shafts, to turn off from the No. 9A shaft the Lansford and Lykens laterals, and to drive portions of the main tunnel. An emergency pumping plant, consisting of 2 separate pumprooms, each containing 3 horizontal-type centrifugal pumps of 100,000-gallons-per-minute (g. p. m.) capacity, will be constructed at the No. 9A shaft. From the No. 11 shaft will be turned off the Trevorton lateral and portions of the main tunnel, which will connect with the section driven from the No. 9A shaft. Under the proposed project, the Lansford lateral will be driven for a distance of 2 miles, the Lykens lateral for a distance of 10.56 miles, and the Trevorton lateral for a distance of 20 miles. To drive the Lykens and Trevorton laterals for the distance indicated, several construction shafts and slopes must be sunk to permit efficient and safe construction.

The Zijinshan gold-copper mine, in spite of the low-grade nature of the ore, has become one of the largest production-scale and most profitable non-ferrous metal mines in China. The successful application of hydrometallurgy as well as proper engineering design are the key factors for large-scale development of the Zijinshan gold-copper mine. In this contribution, the practical experience acquired in the development of the Zijinshan gold and copper mines is summarized. This covers most aspects of the production process including mining, beneficiation, ore stacking, heap (bio)leaching, carbon-in-leach, solvent extraction, electrowinning, wastewater and tailing treatments. The authors believe that this practical experience will not only help to promote the development of hydrometallurgy, but can also serve as a model for other gold and/or copper plants around the world.

The transition of mechanical cooling refrigerants from their inception in the 1800s through to the current day has been driven by several factors. Original refrigerants such as sulfur and carbon dioxide, chloromethane and ammonia, whilst effective came with toxicity and/or flammability issues. In 1930 DuPont trademarked a new synthetic refrigerant known as Freon® 12, this development was the introduction of ‘chlorofluorocarbons’ (CFCs).Throughout the 1930s and 1940s additional synthetic refrigerants were developed, namely Freon® 11 and Freon® 22. Due to their non-toxic and non-flammable characteristics, synthetic refrigerants were extensively used for domestic, commercial and industrial applications for the next 60 years.In 1985, one of the first scientific papers suggested a potential mechanism linking CFCs and areduction in the density of the ozone layer. In 1987 the Montreal protocol is ratified; it is the first UN treaty to be ratified by every country on earth. Due to CFC’s ozone depletion potential (ODP), the treaty required the consumption of CFC’s to be reduced by 50 per cent over the next ten years. By 1996 the phase out of CFC’s (Freon® 12) is completed, the phase out of HCFC (Freon® 22) refrigerants comes into effect.On 1 January 2018 the phase down of HFC’s begins. Whilst having zero impact on the ozone layer HFC refrigerants have high global warming potential (GWP). As we transition through the HFC phase down (2018–2035) we are beginning to see the emergence of what some consider to be the fourth synthetic wave, hydrofluoro-olefins (HFO’s). HFO’s and their blends have zero ODP and low GWP’s, ranging from 150 to less than 1. The reduction in GWP with HFO’s typically comes at the expense of flammability, which is not ideal. Each refrigerant has its optimal application, therefor when considering refrigerant choices for mining systems, a complete assessment of the environmental, health and safety, efficiency and commercial impacts should be considered now more than ever.

"Construction of embankments up to 34 ft in height for twelve ramps and roadways needed for the New Jersey Turnpike Interchange 14A project required ground improvement. The subsurface conditions, consisting of up to 30-ft thick layer of highly-compressible peat and organic soils, would induce up to 8 ft of primary and 4 in. of secondary consolidation settlements to the embankments over a long period of time. Innovative ground improvement solutions were needed to meet unique challenges posed by the poor subsurface conditions, space and existing utility constraints, aggressive construction schedule, and massive size of the project. A variety of ground improvement techniques were utilized in six different zones of the embankments to limit settlements and ensure stability of the embankments. These techniques included preloading with surcharge and prefabricated vertical drains (PVD), load balancing using light weight fill, and concrete column rigid inclusions (RI). Additionally, augercast piles with load transfer platform were used under an existing bridge with low vertical clearance. An innovative approach consisting of preloading with surcharge and PVDs followed by installation of RI was needed in one of the six embankment zones with the worst, i.e., very soft, soil conditions. The design of the RI was performed by a specialty ground improvement contractor (SGIC) using Plaxis 2D and 3D softwares. The performance of the ground improvement systems was verified and monitored by load tests and instrumentations. This paper presents details of the ground improvement design, construction, monitoring results, and lessons learned, with a focus on the RI.INTRODUCTIONNew Jersey Turnpike Interchange 14A is located within the cities of Bayonne and Jersey City, in Hudson County, New Jersey. The New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) identified Interchange 14A as an area of mass congestion in need of redevelopment to improve the increasing demand of traffic and roadway safety. The New Jersey Turnpike Interchange 14A project included the construction of twelve (12) new roadways, in addition to the construction of four new bridges. The limits of construction are shown in Fig. 1.The fill height required to construct the roadway embankments varied from 2 to 34 ft. The proposed embankment side slopes varied from 6H: 1V to 2H: 1V. Additionally, mechanically-stabilized-earth (MSE) walls were utilized to retain the embankment fill along some segments of the roadways. As shown in Table 1, the proposed roadways were divided into six zones, based on location, subsurface condition, and embankment height."

A two-year test conducted by the USBM's Spokane Mining Research Center (SMRC) has proven the feasibility of the yielding rockbolt, a concept which may prove very useful to the mining industry by providing ground support under a variety of conditions. The yielding rockbolt was originally developed in South Africa3 to overcome the limitations of conventional bolting in rock subjected to high-stress or rock burst conditions. The yielding effect is obtained by fitting the bolt prior to thread rolling with a smooth-bore die of internal diameter slightly larger than the shank diameter but smaller than the rolled thread diameter.

In July 2012, Hatch Ltd. and Air Products & Chemicals Inc. completed construction and commissioning of a 4000 tpd O2 cryogenic air separation unit (ASU) for Barrick Gold’s Pueblo Viejo Project located in central Dominican Republic. The ASU produces high pressure gaseous oxygen, which is used for the oxidation of refractory sulphide ore within the pressure oxidation (POX) circuit. As a result of the project’s remote location and tropical climate, many challenges were faced over the course of construction, commissioning and start-up of the ASU. These challenges included adequate preservation of equipment due to dusty and humid site conditions, final assembly and erection of the cryogenic distillation columns on site, limited spare parts inventory/availability, and an unfinished power source for plant commissioning. This paper discusses the steps taken by Hatch and Air Products to successfully design, construct, commission and start up the largest stand-alone ASU plant for a POX application in the metallurgical industry.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 165 natural gas samples from 21 States and 1 foreign country. Of the total samples, 155 were collected during calendar year 1988. The remainder were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received until 1988. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

"In an earlier paper the author explored the consequences of price-stabilizing effects, on an industry-wide basis, of various production strategies. These ideas have now been applied to an illustrative case of an individual mine. It is shown that the turning of production and financial policies can affect financial performance over a five-year period by as much as 22 per cent.No generality is claimed for the results and they would differ from mine to mine. It is, however, asserted that the results show that the proper turning of production, reserves and financial policies are more critical determinants of mine performance than has been realised. It is also asserted that the methods of dynamic analysis are the most appropriate means for studying this policy-design problem."

"This paper provides an overview of the current use of auxiliary ventilation product and the challenges with limited air quantity in dead-end entry or working face. The PVC low frictional factor, low physical constraint and minimum leakage ventilation duct was development with ""made in US and used in US"". The PVC duct development covering operational and total cost of ownership with on-going success will be presented. This paper will discuss mine sites using new PVC vent duct underground and the results from operational and technical side making a difference. INTRODUCTION The Turquoise Ridge Joint Venture (TRJV) is located in northern central Nevada, and is situated within the Basin and Range province, near the northeast end of the Osgood Mountains (see Figure 1). The TRJV mine consists of typical Carlin type- gold mineralization characterized by low strength rock of altered limestone’s, siltstones, and mudstones. The weak nature of the ground facilitates the underhand cut and fill mining methods [3].Mining Method; Underhand cut and fill : The mine uses underhand cut and fill method which has 12’x12’ top cuts and several different size undercuts. The ore body is accessed off of a secondary development heading, utilizing a heading with a cross section of 14W x 14H or 15W x 16H configuration. In the wider and more massive zones, two headings in a production panel may be worked at any one time. Drift round lengths are determined by the type of drilling machine being used. An example of a typical topcut and associated undercut layout is shown in Figure 2. SECONDARY / AUXILIARY VENTILATION IN UNUNDERGROUND METAL MINES The auxiliary ventilation system provides the required air volumes at the face of dead-end developments and production workings, which in many cases may be considered as the primary method of assuring that the air quantity and quality standards in these working areas are satisfied. The Auxiliary fans and ducting systems are usually the primary means of delivering the required air volumes to the face of dead-end developments and production workings. Both centrifugal and axial-flow fans are used in underground auxiliary ventilation systems, usually electric powered. The internally direct driven axial-flow fans tend to be more popular because of their compactness and adaptability to staging. The most commonly used materials for ridged tubing are coated steel, alloyed steel, fiberglass and resin. Flexible (collapsible) ventilation tubing is also used and is usually made from neoprene-coated or nylon material. To add stiffness and reduce collapsibility these fabric ducts can be formed over a steel spring frame. Mott MacDonald and Project Management Advisors are providing Technical and Project Management services for San Diego County for the Courthouse Commons Project. The Courthouse Commons Project involves the redevelopment of three downtown blocks owned by San Diego County and construction of an Inmate Transfer Tunnel between the County Central Jail and the San Diego Central Court. The tunnel will be 327 feet long, crosses the San Diego Fault and is being constructed using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). This paper discusses the history and procure‑ ment strategy for the project, the technical aspects of the transfer tunnel and the con‑ struction progress of the tunnel to date.
