- Introductory IN 1882, The Arizona Copper Co. Ltd., acquired producing copper mines at Metcalf and Morenci (locally called Longfellow). Metcalf is situated a distance of 7 miles, and Morenci a distance of 6 miles from the general office of the company at Clifton, Ariz. A reduction works with five blast furnaces was built in the center of the town of Clifton in 1884 and operated until January, 1914. Concentration of oxidized ores was begun in 1890-1891, in a mill built adjoining the smelter, and in October, 1893, a leaching process was started for treating tailings from the oxide mill. A sulphide concentrator with 300 tons capacity was built at Clifton and started treating chalcocite ores in July, 1896. This was the first mill to treat low-grade copper-sulphide ores successfully. Another concentration mill for sulphide ores was erected at Morenci in 1900. The, sulphide mills are now being remodeled to treat ores by concentration and flotation, with a capacity of 4,000 tons at Morenci and 500 tons at Clifton. The leaching plant has not been running since September, 1914. The average yearly production from this company's mines and reduction works from 1885 to date has been: Pounds 10 years ended 1894 6,864,902 10 years ended 1904 20,439,614 10 years ended 1914 : 32,665,905 Part of year 1915, to Sept. 12 30,206,106 4 months of 1916, to June 15,964,840 June, 1916...: ? 4,900,000 Construction on a new smelting plant was started in February, 1912, and finished in February, 1914. Correct selection of forging parameters is very important to produce sound superalloy parts. In this investigation nickel-iron base superalloy IN901 successfully forged and seal spacer, which is a part of airplane with about 11 kg weight has been produced. Forging has been performed on the basis of hot compression results, which show deformation above 1100°C associated with dynamic recrystallization (DRX) which can increase the workability of material. On the other hand annealing at 1100°C decreases the flow stress during hot compression, and then increases the material formability. Then billets annealed at 1100°C in electrical furnace for 24 hours and reheated again to 1100°C before forging. Initial square cross section billet with 128mm side and 202mm length forged immediately after reheating by 80MN mechanical press. Specimens forged in five steps: upsetting, three steps molding and finishing. Preformed and molded specimens reheated in electrical furnace before later step of forming. Finally specimens trimmed by 1 OMn mechanical press and hot set by hydraulic press and then cooled in air to room temperature. Results show that reheating temperatures has been selected correctly because there isn't any surface crack and die cavities filled completely by forging material. Material flow has been carried out properly and there isn't any defect in critical points especially in extradoses and intradoses. Microstructural examinations show that grain boundaries contain Ti-rich globular particles that formed during cooling.

During investigations of the occurrence of manganese in the western United States in the early 1940?s, examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples from seven claims and mines in southern Arizona. For convenience in reporting the results, the work on the properties is grouped in three districts. As the ores were too low grade to be acceptable to producers of ferromanganese, beneficiation studies were made to determine the amenability of the ores to concentration. The San Fernando group is about 10.5 miles south of Patagonia in the Harshaw mining district. G. T. Humphries and D. Alonso held an option on the property, which was owned by H. Bender. Two samples were taken; 1 was a picked sample and the other a representative sample of ore as exposed in the mine.

The concept of limit burning velocities is used to formulate a quantitative theory of flammability limits. Competing processes dissipate power from a combustion wave and quench propagation at some characteristically low limit velocity. There are four competing processes and one complication: (a) Free, buoyant convection, (b) conductive-convective wall losses, (c) radiation, (d) selective, diffusional demixing (the complication), and (e) flow gradient effects (flame stretch). These complexities are unraveled by creating an idealization that is initially freed from these competing processes. The ideal serves as a standard, and its burning velocity (Su), ideal is a unique function of the initial thermodynamic variables of state. By adding each process individually, it is possible to evaluate their significance, quantitatively, in terms of a limit velocity (Su)a , b , c , or e , and to explore the nature of their cooperative interactions. The larger the limit velocity, the more significant the process. The apparently diverse observations of flammability behavior are readily unified within this simple, conceptual framework.

"Magnetic fields affect the growth of cultured cells and plants; however, limited information exists about their effects on vegetation performing environmental remediation. Constructed wetland mesocosms treating hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) wastewater exposed to low-intensity magnetic fields (60 Hz, 56.5 × 10-6 Tesla) produced 100% more biomass than the unexposed control. Nonetheless, they removed only 43 ± 27% of Cr(VI), compared to 60 ± 21% for the control. A Cr(VI) reduction expression was developed as a function of the magnetic field. The design and operation of constructed wetlands to treat mining wastewater can be corrected for magnetic field effects.RÉSUMÉ Les champs magnétiques affectent la croissance des cellules et des plantes cultivées; toutefois, il existe peu d’information quant à leurs effets sur la végétation utilisée à des fins d’assainissement environnementale. Pressure oxidation tests have been conducted by Sherritt for a refractory gold-silver project located in China. The feed contained 39 g/t Au and 970 g/t Ag; the major gold-bearing minerals were pyrite and arsenopyrite. Since the feed contained a significant amount of silver, which can be refractory to cyanide leaching after pressure oxidation due to the formation of argentojarosite, the test program included investigation of methods to enhance silver recovery. The "lime boil" process proved successful and was incorporated into the flowsheet. Gold extraction from the lime boil product solids was 95 to 98%; silver extraction was up to 94%.

"Mineral exploration properties are those on which an economically viable mineral deposit has not yet been discovered. Such properties are bought, sold, optioned and joint ventured on the basis of their perceived potential for the existence and discovery of a viable mineral deposit. The intrinsic value of an exploration property is therefore based on the exploration potential. One measure of the exploration potential is the amount that can be justified to spend on exploration for a viable deposit.The appraised value method uses a cost approach to value exploration properties. It is based on the premise that an exploration property is worth the meaningful past exploration expenditures plus warranted future costs to test remaining exploration potential. Results of past exploration work are analyzed in order to retain only those past expenditures that are productive in terms of identifying remaining potential. Warranted future costs comprise a reasonable exploration budget to test that potential.INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this paper is to describe a cost approach to the valuation of mineral exploration properties and to provide some valuation examples. The particular cost approach described is the Appraised Value Method, which is best applied to mineral properties at the exploration stage.At present there are no comprehensive regulations or guidelines in Canada which specify what approaches and methods to use for the valuation of mineral properties. In this paper, the Appraised Value Method described is one method that the writer considers to be accepted industry practice for mineral properties at the exploration stage.Mineral properties are valued for a number of reasons, including mergers and acquisitions, non arm's length transactions, pricing of initial public offering of stock, support for property agreements, litigation, expropriation, and insurance claims."

"As rock engineering moves from continuum to more discontinuum approaches for modeling, the engineer must make decisions regarding the degree of complexity to simulate for a given application, balancing the level of structural detail within the rockmass model with computational cost and result accuracy. It is important to consider that model does not need to include all the existent fractures and that representative geometrical properties for a given rock mass volume can be defined including only major structural entities.Within this paper, the scale-dependency associated with the geometrical properties of fractured rock is investigated utilizing a Synthetic Rockmass (SRM) approach with a view to characterize such ground to aid in the design of geotechnical works. In terms of process, the concept of the Representative Elementary Volume (REV) is used to determine the equivalent structural properties of the rockmass in order to justify the applicability of far-field behaviour of such ground. A large size Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) measuring 60m x 60m x 60m has been generated using the structural data obtained from LiDAR scanning of the Brockville Tunnel, Ontario, Canada. A number of DFN samples of varying sizes are extracted from the master network, generated using MoFrac, in order to be used as a the basis of the structural analysis of the rockmass. Volumetric measurements for the density and the intensity of jointing are employed in order to approximate the geometrical REV for the networks.In this paper a complete methodology of how to generate a DFN from LiDAR data and its analysis in order to determine the size of a geometrical REV is demonstrated. For the specific rockmass found in the area of the Brockville Tunnel, a geometrical REV measuring 3.5m x 3.5m x 7m is established. The results are generally in good agreement with the in-situ observations."

A series of steel heats, one low-alloy and nine carbon, was made by the Bureau of Mines in a 1-ton arc furnace from ferrous scrap from incinerated refuse, steel cans, and detinned steel cans, both alone and blended with heavy-melting scrap. Two additional control heats, one of carbon steel and one of low-alloy steel, were made from electric furnace heavy-melting scrap to pro-vide comparative data. The steel products were cast into two 4-by 4-inch nominal 50-pound ingots; in most heats, an 8-by 8-inch nominal 7S0-pound ingot was also obtained. Tests of these ingots indicated that reinforcing bars of acceptable quality can be made from urban refuse components such as steel cans.

The importance of phosphate in feeding the people of the world has been recognized by mining companies as they continue their search for new ore deposits and ways of improving phosphate production. An extensive phosphate-recovery research project involving investigation of beneficiation variables by batch testing, flotation pilot-plant processing of the major portion of the ore, gravity separation of the coarse fraction, and recovery of byproduct heavy minerals of a North Carolina phosphate deposit has been completed. Data obtained through batch tests enabled the development of an economical flowsheet which proved successful for the efficient recovery of a good quality phosphate concentrate in a pilot plant.

This discussion is concerned with the method of manufacturing, the design possibilities, and the properties of pole pieces for direct-current electric . motors and generators made from iron powder. In such applications as pole pieces, the electric and magnetic properties of the material are of major importance, therefore they are discussed somewhat more fully. However, the main advantage in making pole pieces from powders lies in the rapid and inexpensive method of manufacturing these pieces, and in the flexibility of design, rather than in their superior electrical properties. As a matter of fact, pole pieces from iron powder have found their principal field of usefulness in small electric motors for controls and similar applications where the highest possible flux density in a given design is not required. Fig. I shows a number of different designs for pole pieces made from iron powder. The steps involved in fabricating them are: (I) briquetting—with each stroke of the briquetting press a complete . pole piece is produced; (2) sintering, and (3) sizing, which is a one-step coining operation in a hand-operated punch press. Conventionally small pole pieces are made from laminated electrical sheet steel stock by punching out the laminations and riveting them together (Fig. 2). The powder method has the advantage of being rapid and inexpensive; also, it makes possible the molding of pole pieces with a round hub, which are better from a design standpoint, as will be shown later. It is difficult to make such round-hubbed pieces from laminated stock. The pole pieces could, of course, be machined from solid stock, but this method is not widely used. The raw material for making pole pieces from powder is straight iron powder without the addition of any alloying ingredients. However, the grade of powder used is of considerable importance, as will be shown later when the influence of the grade of iron powder upon the magnetic properties is discussed. Pole pieces are briquetted in the same way that other iron-powder machine parts are made. Because the pole pieces are flanged—i.e., they have a hub and a wing section—they are made in presses that apply pressure from both ends. For best mechanical and magnetic properties, the density throughout the piece should be even and also should be constant from piece to piece. For that reason a powder of constant compressibility from batch to batch is needed for briquetting pole pieces. One method of obtaining the required magnetic properties is to sinter the pole pieces at temperatures higher than are used for most iron-powder parts. A temperature of 2400°F. and an atmosphere of hydrogen has been found satisfactory. No automatic furnaces of the roller hearth or mesh-belt type have yet been developed for such high temperatures. The application of manganese in iron and steel metallurgy is very inter¬ esting historically. In general, ancient- irons and steels contained virtu¬ ally no manganese, probably because the available iron ores contained■only small amounts of the manganese oxides. Occasionally, samples of ancient irons were found to have appreciable amounts of manganese, but their presence is considered accidental and dependent upon the ore available to craftsmen of that time. Two specimens of iron (139;— made in 500 A.D. contained .negligible quantities of manganese. A sample of steel which constituted the base of .the Khan Baba pillar in India was probably processed in 12p B. C. by the1 cementa¬ tion of wrought iron. This material; contained 0.02 percent manganese and 0.70 percent carbon (20) . One Damascus-steel sword forged some time between 11'60 ' and l400 A. D. was found to contain 0.1^-i percent manganese and 0.j6l percent carbon. The manganese content of this bla.de was much higher than that of any other material of this type which has been analysed. In every other instance the manganese content was below 0.02 percent. A cast steel manufactured by the East India. Co. in India in the early nineteenth century, under the name of Wootz steel, contained rather appreciable amounts of manganese. This material was made by melting and refining fairly high-manganese pig iron prepared from high-manganese ore. Heath (106), who was working at the Co. plant between 1S20 and 1S40, was convinced that the manganese content of the steel was the determining fa,ctor in its high quality. He learned of certain difficulties English steel manufacturers were having in making even fair-grade steel, and analyses of the material indicated low manganese contents. This convinced him that.if the use of manganese could be introduced in England its steel would be greatly benefited. In consequence, he moved to England and soon was producing certain grades of ferromanganese for use with the crucible process. He recommended addition of this metallic material to the ingot mold just before pouring. It was soon found that inferior brands of steel containing only traces of manganese could be greatly improved by such additions. All metallurgists of that time became convinced

[The ventilation of development faces in mines for diluting gas or dust concentrations aid in hot mines for providing air-motion cooling affect, by fan-pipe units discharging high-velocity streams of air close to the face, is an important phase of mitre ventilation. The effectiveness of such units depends largely on the air-flow distribution between-the pipe discharge said the face, a subject on which little definite information is available. A study of the air, flow from grills into rooms3/ has provided sore basic data, but under conditions so different from mine fan-pipe installations in development ends that tae data to are of doubtful application to mine installa¬tions, owing to differences in air-flow conditions. The purposes of this report is to present and discuss the results of an initial series of tests of a general investigation designed to yield definite laws and design data for the discharge of fan-pine lines in nines. The s series was planned to yield preliminary data on the effects of velocity of discharge, size and shape of tripe, and adjacent calls on the air-flow distribution. Tents were made on 10-inch pine with seven different end conditions and one change of wall condition. Changes in size and shape of discharge wore made b y short transformation pieces directly at the discharge end, with the result that effects due to contraction and expansion of the flow, which proved to be of much greater importance than was expected, totally obscured any normal effects cue to size anti shape. The results of this series of tests, therefore, relate to 10-inch pipe with various discharge designs is and ago se reported.]

A prediction for oil recovery from a pilot waterflood in the Kane oil- field, located in Elk, Forest, and McKean Counties, Pa., was made and compared to actual field performance. Water-injection and production histories, well logs, other field data, and results from laboratory tests of core material were used in this analysis. Performance of the pilot waterflood, initiated in January 1963, was predicted using a modified Craig, Geffen, and Morse calculation technique. Maximum recovery from this low permeable, preferentially oil-wet formation was predicted to be about 22,500 barrels of oil after 300,000 barrels of water had been injected into the pilot waterflood area. After additional field data were collected it became necessary to reevaluate the pilot waterflood area. The gas saturation prior to the waterflood was estimated to have been 20 percent, based on an assumption regarding the required volume of water injected to initiate oil production. In view of the actual field performance, a gas saturation of 13 percent is indicated. When this gas saturation and the method originally proposed by Craig and others are used) the predicted results are more representative. In December 1965, field performance was further analyzed using a hyperbolic-decline curve as presented by Arps. Based upon this evaluation method, the pilot water flood in the Kane sand should produce 37,000 to 42,000 barrels of oil with the injection of 300,000 barrels of water into the pattern. By continuing this secondary-recovery project to a reasonable economic limit, ultimate oil recovery may be as much as 50,000 to 55,000 barrels, or 129 to 142 barrels per acre-foot from 36.5 acres.

The Bureau of Mines determined demonstrated tin resources and costs associated with tin production in order to evaluate the potential for tin production from 18 market economy countries (MEC's). Data were collected from tin producers, in most cases during on-site visits. The analyses evaluated the relative economic and resource position of 146 mines, deposits, or regions in January 1984 dollars. The demonstrated resource of recoverable tin within the nations studied is approximately 2.8 million metric tons (mt). Of this total, over 73 pct is recoverable from the Southeast Asian countries of Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia, which in 1983 accounted for almost 60 pct of the world's tin production. Brazil has joined the Southeast Asian countries as a major low-cost, high-volume supplier of tin and is likely to continue to expand its production. Given the 1984 market structure, over 60 pct of the tin in demonstrated resources was economically recoverable. Historically, the International Tin Council (ITC) has helped maintain relatively stable tin prices through a buffer stock and sales quotas. In late 1985, exhaustion of buffer stock funds led to suspension of tin trading on the world's major tin metal exchanges.

Productive and beneficial use of reclaimed surface-mined land is a concern of industry, government, and the general public. An investigation was conducted of current mined-land planning practices to aid in the development of a procedure for evaluating postmining land use potentials. This investigation considered both the industry and public planning approach to mined-land planning and was based primarily upon three case studies conducted in various regions of the United States. The site planning process that was developed during the investigation is iterative in nature and has been designed specifically for the mining industry. It centers around preliminary studies and data collection, development of land use alternatives, and the evaluation of alternatives. Use of this process facilitates the evaluation of economic, environ- mental, and social impacts of postmining land use alternatives. In this paper, the process is presented along with a description of its development, application, and significance.

It is now generally conceded that coal is the product of deposition and transformation of debris of forests and swamps.29 Ample data are available to illustrate the metamorphosis of biochemical substances through biological action; other data show the progressive regional metamorphism existing in coal beds;25 and numerous examples of change effected by intrusion of igneous dikes into coal deposits have been established.23 However, often the relative importance of the biological and the geological factor in determining the character of the various natural coals is a debatable question. Since both biological and geological factors are ever present in nature, the problem, at first glance, would appear to resemble certain probability problems: specifically the simultaneous toss of two coins, with the biological factor as heads and the geological as tails. The probability is 2:I for the combined effect of both factors, as compared to the exclusive effect of either one, if the a priori probability is the same for each factor. This condition can be analyzed by a thermodynamic treatment of data, which may be obtained from a consideration of pertinent biological, chemical, geophysical and geological facts. Synopsis of Biological and Chemical Facts The biosphere is not sterile; i.e., microorganisms are always present. Microor- ganisms have been established in the ocean deep, under the ice of the polar regions, in the sand of the deserts, and in swamps far below the surface. The various biological media may be acid, neutral, or alkaline, and they may or may not be readily accessible to air. Microorganisms are encountered almost everywhere, except where the temperature is not within the range tolerable by microbial life. Of course, with changing conditions, the type of microorganisms will change. All chemical products of life—proteins, fats, carbohydrates, lignins, waxes, resins— may serve as a habitat of microorganisms. In the decomposition of a medium, some microorganisms macerate organic matter mechanically and remove certain constituents for their own nutrition; others decompose a large part of the organic matter but may leave certain constituents undecomposed. Some attack only certain specific ingredients of the organic matter. All of them build up cell substance. The nitrogen content of the medium largely determines the degree of decomposition. Below 1.7 per cent nitrogen, growth of microorganisms and hence decomposition of organic material is retarded; consequently organic material will accumulate.17,32 Such accumulations of organic material may give coal eventually. Coals differ in type and rank. The nature of the original vegetation and the conditions attending the transformation of the accumulated debris determine the type of coal such as bright, splint, cannel, and algal or boghead coals. Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate, has a history of usefulness to man dating back several thousand years, and a worldwide industry has been built on the mining and processing of this versatile industrial mineral. However, anhydrite, the other prin¬cipal calcium sulfate mineral, has very limited use, so much so that separate statistics for it are not always kept, but are usually included with those for gypsum. Although often found in close association, the two minerals have important chemical differences in that anhydrite is the anhy¬drous form of calcium sulfate (CaSO4) whereas gypsum is the dihydrate (CaSo4.2H20). These two molecules of combined water result in significant differences in hardness, density, and solubility of the two minerals. Of most importance, however, is the difference in thermal properties wherein gypsum, upon the application of a modest amount of heat, can be converted to the hemihydrate of calcium sulfate (CaSO4 '21H20) or plaster of paris, an intermediate product upon which is based over 90% of the value of all calcium sulfate end products. Anhydrite, on the other hand, is inert at these temperatures and its uses have been limited to only those few cases where calcium sulfate in the anhydrous form may have an advan¬tage. The earliest known use of gypsum plaster dates back some 5000 years to the time of the Pharaohs of Egypt who had discovered that gypsum rock, when exposed to fire, broke down into a powder which, when mixed with water, would form a putty that could be plastered on a rough mud brick or stone wall to make a smooth finish. It was used down through the centuries in a limited way for ornamental purposes, but did not achieve wide acceptance because of the quick (25 to 30 min) setting or hardening time which made it difficult to use. The first real understanding of gypsum chemistry was developed in France about 1755, and the gradual growth of its present utilization dates from that time. In the United States, the first utilization of gypsum was to grind it to a fine material for use as a soil conditioner at about the time of the Revolutionary War, and the term land plaster for ground gypsum was coined and has remained in use. Another cementitious material-lime or calcium oxide-had become the usual plastering material, but by about 1870 a method for retarding the set of gypsum plaster was discovered; today it has almost completely replaced lime as a plastering material. In recent years, gypsum products sold in the United States have reached a total valuation of approximately $2 Gpy as illustrated in [Table 1].

All chemical products of life-proteins, fats, carbohydrates, lignins, waxes, resinsmay serve as a habitat of microorganisms. In the decomposition of a medium, some microorganisms macerate organic matter mechanically and remove certain constituents for their own nutrition; others decompose a large part of the organic matter but may leave certain constituents undecomposed. Some attack only certain specific ingredients of the organic matter. All of them build up cell substance. The nitrogen content of the medium largely determines the degree of decomposition. Below 1.7 per cent nitrogen, growth of microorganisms and hence decomposition of organic material is retarded; consequently organic material will accumulate.17,32 Such accumulations of organic material may give coal eventually. Coals differ in type and rank. The nature of the original vegetation and the conditions attending the transformation of the accumulated debris determine the type of coal such as bright, splint, cannel, and algal or boghead coals.
