Analyses of samples of crude oil from fields in West Texas have been published from time to time in Bureau of Mines reports.3/ Analyses of 100 samples of crude oil from West Texas) collected during 1946 to 1952) are presented in this report. The production of crude oil from the fields in this portion of Texas totaled 381,129,000 barrels4/ during 1951 - an amount greater than that of any previous year. Total cumulative production of this area through 1951 was 2,792,692,000 barrels.5/ Table 1 gives monthly production figures for 1951 and yearly totals for the preceding 10 years (1942-1951) [ ]

PRODUCTION of bituminous coal and lignite increased substantially in 1964. There were upward trends also in consumption, average value, exports, mechanization, and productivity. However, a significant decline in employment continued. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States in 1964-487 million tons-was 6 percent greater than the 459 million tons produced in 1963. The gain was attributed largely to expanded consumption by the electric utilities, greater use at coke ovens, and an increase in exports.

The influence of solution ionic strength (IS) and electrolyte valence on the flotation behavior of malachite has been investigated. The microflotation tests were conducted over a range of solution IS (1?300 mM) at a constant speed (340 rpm), pH (9.5), flotation time (10 min), and sodium oleate dosage (5.3×10-7 moles/g). The size of malachite ranged from 45 to 53 µm, and two different types of electrolytes (NaCl and CaCl2) were employed. Electrophoretic mobility was also measured over the same IS range employed in the microflotation study. Overall, strong coupled effect of solution IS and ion valence was observed. Specifically, the flotability of malachite increased with increasing IS in the presence of monovalent cation (Na+) while the flotability increased up to 30 mM and decreased with increasing IS in the presence of divalent cation (Ca2+). Notably, the flotability of malachite was greater with the presence of Na+ compared with Ca2+ under high IS conditions (IS>30 mM). Consistent trend for Na+ versus Ca2+ was observed from the flotation results with different SO dosages. The characterization and flotation results suggested that the trend was likely attributed to the increased unfavorable interaction between malachite and bubble via the charge reversal of bubbles and malachite at higher IS in the presence of Ca2+.

Distribution coefficients of minor matte constituents are complex functions of sulfur and/or oxygen potentials?. The distribution behaviour of different? metals can be qualitatively derived from their affinities to copper and stabilities. of their sulfides and oxides. Until a fire occurs, insurance and prevention work are often looked on as unavoidable necessities, but as insurance is back of all business credit, it is essential to know that in case of damage money will be available to cover the loss; while the interruption of production, often caused by a fire, brings home the realization that if prevention work avoids such an interruption, it is well worth while. Fire insurance is a legal contract guaranteeing the payment of large amounts to an owner, but it is possible there is no other important contract that receives so little consideration. Although previously carried on elsewhere, it is only of recent years that insurance engineering has been actively followed up in Canada, with inspections of an owner's property carried out for his benefit. Now inspections of this kind are made, advice on fire prevention and protection work ?is available, reports with recommendations with regard to the above are furnished periodically, and with this method applied the owner receives the broadest possible cover and security at the lowest cost. Rates are set by the underwriters by rating schedules which charge for defects in a building and allow credits for protection and other favourable features . These schedules are based on the past record of loss of mining properties as a class, so that a fire in another mining property indirectly affects you, but the amount paid is reduced in proportion as your property is improved. The writer feels, from personal experience, that there is no industry where fire prevention receives more attention than the mining industry, and it is a pleasure to advise that, due to this co-operation, some reduction in the basis rates for mining risks is now being made by the underwriters.

The monoclinic to tetragonal inversion of zirconium dioxide was studied by single-crystal X-ray methods, high-temperature X-ray diffractometry, and differential thermal analysis. The unusual features of the inversion, such as no definite transition Lperature, hysteresis, and athermal kinetics, were confirmed for powders who mean crystallite size was greater than 1,000 A. Samples of mean crystallite size below 1,000 A displayed classical kinetics, obeying a logarithmic rate law. A detailed mechanism based on Ubbelohde's theory of continuous phase transformations was proposed which is consistent with all the experimental facts.

Before getting into the subject of packaging and materials management, please permit me to introduce you to MICRO SWITCH. MICRO SWITCH, A Division of Honeywell Inc. is located in Freeport, Illinois. We manufacture and market thousands of types of precision snap-action electrical switches. Most of them are used as components by other manufacturers in industrial and commercial products. MICRO SWITCH also offers a broad line of industrial control devices including heavy- duty limit switches, relays, manual controls and proximity switches. Other product lines are solid state keyboards for the computer industry and high-performance d.c. motors used in computer related equipment. So you can see that we are a component manufacturer. With the exception of the keyboards, every one of our products would "fit comfortably into a breadbox." Some are so tiny that one could easily fit several thousand into a man's hat. In my position as supervisor-packaging. package design, and materials handling engineering, I am actively involved in package design projects, parts handling design projects, and numerous activities involving departmental layouts, storage facilities, and material handling equipment. Two package design technicians, a materials handling engineer, and a materials handling technician make up the technical staff.

A.B. Rushton The work and resulting publications of the Committee on Underground Coal Mine Safety and The President's Commission on Coal were appropriate at the time of publication. The statistics cited in the publications appeared to be valid, and the actions proposed by the committee had merit. Although the actions proposed to achieve further improvements in safety may have been worthy of repeating, to associate statistics (Table 1) that are seven to eight years old with company names is bad. Statistics are readily available from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and are usually within three months of being up to date. A review of the most recent Coal Controlling Co. Report will reveal significant changes in the rankings. The more recent statistics should have been cited, or at least compared with those used in the article. Westmoreland Coal Co. is listed as having a 21.1 disabling injury rate for the period (1/78-12/80). The disabling injury rate for the Company for the year ending 1985 was 7.4 for the underground mines and 6.25 for the total facilities. Through March 1986, the disabling rate for the underground mines was 2.86. The management and employees of Westmoreland Coal Co. are committed to safety. The improvements achieved over the past five years attest to that commitment. We are justifiably proud of the achievement and dislike being misrepresented as in the April 1986 article. Reply by E.M. Spokes I regret that the lapse of time since the original work gives a picture of safety practice that is no longer true today. That Westmoreland has reduced its disabling injury rate by 65% to 7.4 in 1985 is most commendable, and I congratulate you for this accomplishment. It is typical of the progress sought by the National Academy of Science and National Research Council when they funded the original study and published "Toward Safer Underground Coal Mines" in 1982. If a significant number of companies do as well as Westmoreland, the report will have served its purpose. Since the paper was primarily a condensation of the original report, it would not have been appropriate to seek access to later statistics. The purpose in seeking its publication at the time of presentation was to reach those who might have missed the original report. The fact that publication was delayed has not voided that purpose and may have reminded some who were aware of the original that its recommendations still apply to improvement of underground coal mine safety.

This paper discusses accident experience and costs in 150 Colorado coal mines for the 5 years 1929-33; these mines produced 62 percent of Colorado's coal tonnage during this period. This and similar studies by the United states Bureau of Mines in other States (listed in the appendix to this report) make available comparable information on mine-accident costs and bring out clearly the importance of accident reduction from the humanitarian as well as from the economic standpoint. Compensation insurance costs constitute a considerable part of the cost of coal output. The tendency toward greater liberalization of workmen's compensation laws and increased benefits thereunder may mitigate to some extent the seriousness of an accident to a worker and his dependents, but no compensation is paid ultimately, not by an insurance fund but by the mine operator and the general public, which includes the miner. The one really effective method of reducing compensation costs is to reduce the number and severity of accidents.

ANOTHER meeting of the Institute has passed into history and it fully sustained the reputation of the Institute as a live organization of the men, and nowadays the women, concerned with the mineral . ? industries and those working therein. The field meetings of, the 1nstitute are cine of its pleasantest and most valuable features. As Dr. Raymond used to say, ((It is good for a mining engineer once in a while to see a mine" and these meetings bring back to the mines those who, through progress into higher executive positions, have come to visit them infrequently, at the same time that they give opportunity for the .younger men to see regions and mines aside from those in which they are then working. This, and the formal and' informal interchange of information resulting,, is of the greatest professional value to all, while the meeting of old and making of new friends causes each meeting to be notable in turn. This year's meeting at Salt Lake City was one of the largest that has been held outside of. New York City; 470 members and guests registered while many more were present at the sessions without attending to this formality. '

This paper describing the mining practice of the Hecla and Star mines, both located at Burke, Idaho, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. It is partly a revision of articles by the author appearing in volume 72 of the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, published in 1925, and in the June 1928, issue of the American Mining Congress Journal. About 26,000 tons per month of lead ore is produced at the Hecla mine. Costs at the mine are given for the year 1928. Stoping operations in the Star mine have covered such a short period, during which time the abnormal expenses of starting were incurred, that they are not given in this paper.

The influence of deformation, relative movement and surface cleanliness on the strength of room -temperature "interparticle" bonds between copper surfaces has been studied. No bonding resulted when clean surfaces were merely pressed together, even under pressures of 50,000 psi. Bonding resulted, however, when clean surfaces were simultaneously pressed and moved relative to each other, some bonding occurring no matter how small the pressure or relative movement. Exposure of the clean surfaces to various chemicals inhibited bonding, none at all being produced by small relative movements. The size of the movements which first produce bonding between exposed surfaces depends on the nature of the chemical, being less than 0.002 in. for cleansing reagents and greater than 0.004 in. for lubricants, water and hydrogen sulfide. It is concluded from the experimental data that the prime requirement for bonding is the dispersal of surface films such as oxides and adsorbed contaminants. THE formation of interparticle bonds during the room-temperature compaction of powder metallurgy components greatly increases the ease of handling in subsequent production operations prior to sintering. The strength of unsintered compacts follows the same general trends as their density and hardness, but quantitative data are extremely Scarce. Quantitative correlation of the data on the overall strength of a compact with that of the individual interparticle bonds is virtually impossible due to the extremely complex geometry of powder compacts. Qualitatively, however, the strengths of unsintered compacts can be correlated with variations in parameters known to influence the extent of cold bonding, and hence interparticle bonding, such as surface cleanliness, relative movement, and deformation of the mating surfaces. Kuzmic and seelig4 found that contamination of powder particle surfaces with lubricants reduced the strength of unsintered iron and copper compacts. Interparticle shear has been shown to promote bonding by Train and Hersey7 while Gregory has shown that die rotation is beneficial. Eilender and schwalbe6 concluded that most bonding occurred during the early stages of pressing iron powder compacts when interparticle shear is one of the principal processes occurring. mile there can be little doubt that these and other factors, such as particle size and shape, affect the extent of interparticle bonding produced by compaction, evaluation of the influence of individual factors is not easy. The complexities that exist in the nature of the basic feedstock to the metallurgical process call for a high degree of ingenuity from the extractive metallurgist in seeking the best possible treatment method for a particular ore. Drawing from personal experience the author presents four case studies that demonstrate the value of creative thinking in addressing the challenges typically encountered by the extraction metallurgist. It is concluded that creative expression most often occurs in response to a perceived strong need within an organization. By deliberately laying down meaningful challenges management can stimulate innovative thinking and achieve extraordinary results.

Piles extending through soft soil near the ground surface will have a relatively low lateral stiffness. As a result, lateral serviceability limits may control the number of piles required for foundation support. Improving near surface soil properties may significantly increase lateral pile stiffness and thus reduce the number of piles required for the foundation. A series of analyses have been performed to assess the depth and lateral extent of soil improvement required to significantly increase lateral foundation stiffness. Analyses consisted of Winkler type beam on a spring foundation and three-dimensional, linear elastic finite element analyses. Results from the analyses show that lateral pile foundation stiffness can be doubled when soil properties are improved to a depth and lateral extent of 5 pile diameters. In order to achieve this increase in foundation stiffness, the modified/improved soil modulus of elasticity needed to be approximately 5 times greater than adjacent unimproved soil. This magnitude of soil improvement over such a limited lateral extent suggests that limited soil improvement can result in more economical foundation designs at soft soil sites.

The operation of large opencast mines in a densely populated area in the centre of Europe involves an inevitable interference in the region. Thus, this is only possible with general acceptance by the regional stakeholders. In order to achieve this general acceptance, it is necessary to develop sound common concepts and to engage in a continuous dialogue with the stakeholders. The aim is to create seminal structures of relevance to the regional economy, taking into account the interests of the various stakeholders like e.g. authorities, local governments, the regional public, and churches. The recultivation of the mined-out areas represents the offset for the mining activities. RWE Power has reached high acceptance of its recultivation. This high acceptance is illustrated by various examples, from biotopes to high-yield agriculture and recreational areas. Thus, recultivation covers all the elements of sustainable development from social compatibility to ecological as well as economic aspects. This is only achievable through an intensive stakeholder dialogue in the region: The communities concerned are intensively involved in the planning and approval process for the new landscape. As far as social compatibility - one of the aspects of sustainable development - is concerned, the necessary resettlement of whole villages is one of the principal challenges. Over the last few decades, RWE Power has developed an approach that is broadly recognised by the stake-holders in the region. The best proof for this is the high proportion of resettlees taking part in the joint resettlement scheme offered. This can only be achieved by constant involvement of the stakeholders in the resettlement process. In conclusion, it can be stated that RWE Power has implemented a well-functioning stakeholder dialogue that guarantees the general acceptance necessary for mining operations.

With most of the mining industry emerging from the deepest business recession in 50 years, primary attention must be given to surviving in a business climate where dominant foreign competition, depressed prices, and potential overcapacity hang heavy over much of the industry. While already shackled with regulatory constraints, restrictive work rules, and high labor costs, mine operators are faced with the difficult task of reducing costs and improving productivity while operating at less than full capacity. To counter these nearly over-whelming factors, the mining industry must continue at the national level to seek regulatory relief and a rational policy toward foreign competition from government-controlled mines. In addition, dialogue with labor organizations must continue to minimize the impact of labor costs, cost escalators, and antiquated work practices. Although national and international actions have a tremendous impact on the future of domestic mining operations, local actions by mine operators to dramatically improve mining productivity will strengthen the industry's competitive stance. Before any substantial progress can be made, however, mine operators must recognize and define areas that depress productivity and establish goals and measures for improvement. Once problem areas are defined, a combination of technological and motivational concepts can be applied to improve productivity. Timing of Improvements While there is an immediate need for productivity improvements, only certain concepts offer near-term improvement potential while others must, of necessity, fit into a mid-range or long-range time frame. Near-term solutions (immediate to one year) likely will involve motivational concepts - work incentives and training - coupled with available technological concepts that require little capitalized development or site testing. Mid-range solutions (one to three years), by contrast, will include technological improvements in mining equipment, techniques, and systems automation. These concepts require a longer period of capitalized development and site testing before use. Long-range solutions (three years or more), which include adoption of new mining methods and computerized control systems, will appear only after prolonged research and capitalized development programs. One phase of the work of the Bureau of Mines in health and safety is promoting the use of safe, satisfactory, and reliable respiratory-protective devices. To insure that such devices will be available, the Bureau has established schedules of minimum-performance requirements for the approval of self-contained breathing apparatus (1),4/ gas masks (2), supplied-air respirators (hose masks, air-line respirators, and abrasive-blasting helmets, hoods, or masks) (3), dispersoid (dust, fume, and mist) respirators (4), and nonemergency gas respirators (chemical-cartridge respirators) (5). Approval tests of self-contained breathing apparatus are conducted by Health and Safety District B; approval tests of other types of respiratory-protective devices are conducted by the Branch of Health Research. Manufacturers of respiratory-protective devices may submit their equipment to the Bureau of Mines for approval under the requirements of these schedules. If the device, when tested by the Bureau, meets the schedule requirements, a certificate of approval will be granted, which not only states that the equipment has passed the schedule requirements but also gives information about the limitations of the device. If it is found at any time that approved devices do not meet the requirements of the pertinent schedule, the Bureau may rescind approval.

Under authority of the Strategic Materials Act of June 1939, the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Geological Survey, began a broad program of investigation of the strategically important chromite deposits in Sweetgrass, Stillwater, and Carbon Counties, Mont. Extensive occurrences of chromite along the Stillwater Complex in Stillwater County were investigated. The two principal deposits, The Mouat-Sampson and Benbow mines, ultimately were developed and placed in production by the Federal Government. As a part of this general development program, the Carbon County chromite deposits near Red Lodge were examined by Bureau of Mines engineers in 1940, and by the Geological Survey .1-1 1942. The district was examined earlier by Schafer, and the Four Chromes area is mentioned briefly by Westgate. Although the Red Ledge deposits were considered to be of minor importance as compared to those of the Stillwater Complex, several of the ore bodies were adaptable to open-pit mining' methods, and one large deposit on Line Creek Plateau was readily accessible to the Red Lodge-Cooke highway. In 1941, the U. 3. Vanadium Corp. began mining crude lump-chrome ore from the deposit on Line Creek Plateau to supplement national stockpiles, which were being depleted by the rearmament program and the disruption of chrome-ore imports by the European war. Access roads gore constricted to Hellroaring Plateau, and the mining operations were extended to that area. A gravity concentrator with a capacity of 200 tons per day was built and operated at Red Lodge to beneficiate lower-grade ore from the district.
