This paper discusses blast design for vibration control in tight construction blasting. Topics include blast pattern geometry, blast design formulas, loading, explosives & initiation selection, and utilizing borehole deviation equipment and lasers, and rules of thumb. The paper will also explore vibration prediction, neighbor relations, and related topics, such as blast plan submittal. Various projects from metropolitan construction blasting operations will be used as examples. Examples include blasting in the inner city, next to pipelines, and in housing developments.

The Bibliographic Data Base contained in the present volume is the result of a literature search conducted as one task of the Bureau of Mines project concerned with research in borehole assay technology. The data base includes articles, symposia, books, corporate and government reports, patents, and other literature concerned with some aspect of borehole logging, from January 1969 through December 1975. Occasional updating to keep the data base current is anticipated. The remainder of the intro¬duction will be devoted to the explanation of the organization of each entry, along with the translation of terms and abbreviations used in the text. Each entry contains six sections. These include an ID code, a title, an author section, a source section, an abstract, and a descriptor section. The first item listed in an entry is the ID code. This serves to identify an entry. It consists of the first six characters of the first author's (or editor if no authors are involved) last name, along with the last two digits of the year of publication. A letter sometimes follows the year of publication to assure a unique alphanumeric code. For example, if an author named Wilson writes more than one piece of literature in a given year (for example, 1972), the ID code for the entries identifying these pieces of literature would be identical. Therefore, to allow for unique ID codes, the first piece would he identified as "WILSON 72,', the second piece as "WILSON 72A", the third "WILSON 72B", and so on.

Weak rock is an important consideration in tunnel design and construction due to the difficult ground conditions that are often encountered. Nevertheless, when conditions are favorable high advance rates can be achieved leading to economical tunnel construction. Successful construction of a tunnel in weak rocks depends on correctly anticipating the behavior of these unique materials. The objective of this paper is to provide guidelines that can be used to accurately classify the performance of weak rock in tunnels.

"An effective geotechnical design provides an accurate and appropriate assessment, balanced with a mining company’s risk profile. Justifying the cost of slope assessment requires an understanding of the input sensitivities, and resultant risk, to achieve a slope of a required functionality. As a project progresses from Scoping to Feasibility, the geotechnical risk becomes better resolved through increased expenditure on drilling, testing, analysis and modelling as long as the input data is appropriately spatially distributed. Providing accurate and appropriate geotechnical assessments in the early stages provides confidence in all following stages, especially where initial analysis indicates difficult geotechnical conditions. It is also in the early stages of project definition that there is most opportunity to maximise the value of the deposit through investigations into optimal mining methods.This paper examines the advantages of geotechnical engineering input through a project study period. Early geotechnical involvement allows the Scoping and Pre-Feasibility Studies to be more effective. Operational risks can then be better understood and dealt within the Feasibility Study phase, also ensuring that the correct risks and management controls are put in place.With commodity price pressure and cost of resource recovery in a downturned industry, reducing the risk to cash flow, resource recovery and safety should be a primary goal for all mining companies. "Particle-bed compressive stressing is the main work mechanism of comminution by high pressure grinding rolls(HPGR). An experimental study on comminution and mineral liberation of two copper sulfide ores was carried out using a piston-die compressive stressing rig to simulate the situation of comminution with HPGR as the final-grinding device. The tests carried out include compressive comminution tests on particle-bed with narrow-size feed, and the locked-cycle comminution test on particle-bed with broad-size feed, which was then compared to a corresponding locked-cycle test of ball-mill grinding. The narrow-size feed is made up of particles in the size range 2.36~3.35 mm, whereas the broad-size feed of particles in the size range 0~3.35 mm. The liberation analysis for copper-mineral in the comminution products was accomplished using BPMA system – an automatic mineral liberation analyzer developed by BGRIMM. The influences of the stressing intensity and the method of comminution on the copper mineral liberation are discussed in terms of product size distribution, copper-metal deportation among size fractions, distribution of copper mineral among particle-size and particle-grade classes, degree of mineral liberation in size class as well as degree of mineral liberation overall.INTRODUCTION Traditionally, comminution process commonly applied in mineral processing is a flowsheet consisting of crushing of crude ore with conventional crushers, followed by grinding of the crushed ore in tumbling mills. In last decades, the energy-efficient HPGR (high-pressure grinding rolls) has found its application in mineral processing, mostly as tertiary or quaternary crusher to generate a fine-crushed product either as feed to subsequent grinding or as feed to a pre-beneficiation process before further grinding. Compared with the process of conventional crushing followed by grinding in ball mill, this mode of HPGR-application can achieve energy saving to some extent by reducing particle size of the feed to ball milling, and by reducing amount of the feed to ball milling if a significant portion of tailings in relatively coarse particle-size range can be discarded at the pre-beneficiation stage. In recent years, the approaches of letting HPGR take more comminution work from ball mill by applying it in semi-finish grinding mode or even finish grinding mode have been discussed (Burchardt, 2014). Although HPGR finish-grinding has been successfully applied in the cement industry for grinding of cement clinker and raw materials, this mode of HPGR application has yet rarely been implemented in mineral processing, despite the advantage of more energy-saving and other potential benefits such as preferential breakage, internal damage of particles and enhanced mineral liberation which may lead to a better downstream processing performance. The reasons for the retardation of the progress of this kind of HPGR-application in the mineral industry lies not only in that a finish-grinding with HPGR has to be operated in dry condition whereas most of ore-beneficiation processes like flotation are operated in wet condition, but also in that there are large variety of ore materials with various complexity of processing technology, which need to be addressed on a case-by-case basis with a lot of test work, in order to evaluate the potential advantages or disadvantages of this application."

"The project described in this pa-per was undertaken to provide a more thorough understanding of the effect of contamination by drilling fluids on the electrical properties of porous systems. The basic work per-formed was filtration tests on both consolidated and unconsolidated sands and the determination of their resistivity profiles with the aid of screen-type electrodes spaced at convenient intervals along the core.Four drilling fluids were selected, ranging in resistivity from 447.0 ohm-cm. to •5.76 ohm-cm. The permeability of three unconsolidated and four consolidated cores, on which resistivity measurements were made, varied from 1,257 md. to 4,560 md. Five additional cores with permeabilities as low as 49 md. were tested to investigate the effect of permeability on the depth of invasion of drilling fluids.The effect of drilling fluid invasion on resistivity profiles was determined on cores containing brine only, and on those containing 80 to 90 per cent oil and 20 to 10 per cent brine. The study included measurements of (a) clay content of different sections of the core, (b) saturation of the invaded fluids and oil in different parts of the core, and ( c) changes in resistivity as a result of gravitational re-distribution of fluids and diffusion of electrolytes.The data showed that the resistivity of an invaded core is, as was expected, controlled by the resistivity of the filtrate, the resistivity of residual core water, the resistivity of the clay particles, and the amount and distribution of the filtrate, clays, residual oil, and brine. In most cases there was a significant increase in resistivity owing to the presence of clay solids which had invaded the core. The change in resistivity, as a result of the diffusion of salts, was substantial after a period of five hours. There is evidence in some cases that the residual oil and core water saturations of the unconsolidated cores, after substantial invasion, are very low, indicating almost complete displacement by invading fluid."

The variables involved in a complex process like flotation can be classified as follows: a. Disturbance variables - which are undesired properties of the process input which affect the value of the process output but which are not subject to adjustment. They are the result of changes in the properties of the feed, like changes in head grade, flow rate, fineness of grind, etc. b. Manipulated variables (sometimes referred to as process variables or control variables) -which are those that are adjusted - reagent addition, aeration, pulp level - in order to compensate for the disturbances in the properties of feed. c. Performance variables (sometimes referred to as controlled variables) -which are those whose values measure the performance of the process. They are properties of the process output such as grade and recovery. The function of a control system is to maintain the process performance equal to the control objective in spite of the disturbances by adjusting the manipulated variables. Attempts at developing automatic control systems for mineral processing operations date back to the thirties and in many of these attempts the results were not surprisingly poor and un-stable. The poor results brought indifference and suspicion towards automatic control on the part of operators and management. The reasons for the apparent failure of these attempts were two-fold: a. the lack of adequate understanding of the behavioural responses of the process from the control point of view, and b. the lack of reliable control instrumentation which could withstand the harsh environment in mineral dressing plants. Many operators had accepted the fact that control of mineral dressing could be best conducted manually. In the case of flotation circuits, control had been virtually based on the skill and experience of operators particularly their ability to identify and rectify poor flotation performance aided by results from the laboratory (chemical) analysis of regularly collected samples from strategic points in the circuit which are at best, hourly collected samples.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) AT the Pittsburg meeting of the Institute, May, 1879, I made the first announcement in America of the results obtained by Sidney Gilchrist Thomas and Percy C. Gilchrist, ill their efforts to eliminate phosphorus in the manufacture of steel in the Bessemer converter and the open-hearth furnace.1 The first published statement in an American newspaper was a reprint of the first Thomas-Gilchrist paper, 2 which I sent to J. C. Bayles, at that time the editor. At the suggestion of many friends who were present at the Pittsburg meeting, and others who are cognizant of the beginnings of the process in the United States, and for the information of the younger generation of the iron and steel fraternity, I have thought it eminently proper that the history of the process in detail should be given where I made the first announcement and where the process has had its largest development. During my residence in England, from April, 1873, to February, 1879, and as a member of the Iron and Steel Institute since 1874, I was present at many of its meetings during those years. At nearly -every meeting the burden of discussion was the question of the use of pig-iron containing phosphorus in the. manufacture of steel by the Bessemer or the open-hearth process. The Pebble Cu-Au-Mo deposit in southwest Alaska is one of the world's largest porphyry deposits. The western part of the deposit was discovered by Cominco America in 1987, who sold the project to Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd., in 2001. Northern Dynasty discovered the high-grade eastern part of the deposit in 2004 and went into a 50:50 partnership with Anglo American PLC in 2007, forming the Pebble Limited Partnership (Lang et al., 2008). The Pebble Limited Partnership has continued to delineate the deposit through diamond drilling with the most recent resource estimate released in February 2010 (Pebble Limited Partnership, 2010). The Pebble deposit mineral resources comprise 5.94 billion tonnes of measured and indicated resources grading 0.78% Cu EQ, containing 55 billion pounds of copper, 67 million ounces of gold and 3.3 billion pounds of molybdenum. Also delineated are 4.84 billion tonnes of inferred mineral resources grading 0.53% Cu EQ, containing 25.6 billion pounds of copper, 40.4 million ounces of gold and 2.3 billion pounds of molybdenum (Pebble Limited Partnership, 2010). Resources are calculated using a 0.3% Cu EQ cutoff. GEOLOGY AND MINERALIZATION Deposit Geology The Pebble deposit is located in the Kahiltna terrane, between terminal strands of the north-east-striking Lake Clarke strike-slip fault. This fault represents an accretionary boundary and separates the Kahiltna terrane to the north-west from the Peninsular terrane to the south-east (Lang et al., 2008). The Pebble deposit represents a large magmatic-hydrothermal system centered on a group of 90 million year old porphyritic hornblende granodiorite intrusions. An east-west cross section through the southern part of the deposit (Figure 1A) shows the typical relationships between the various rock units which host sulfide mineralization. Sub-parallel ~96 million year old granodiorite and diorite sills were intruded into siltstones of the Jura-Cretaceous Kahiltna flysch. In the west, these sills were cut by a ~96 million year old alkalic intrusive complex composed of porphyritic monzonites and monzodiorites and related intrusion breccias (Bouley et al, 1995). The mineralized 90 million year old hornblende granodiorite intrusions cut all rock types and comprise four small stocks in the western part of the deposit and a larger pluton in the eastern part of the deposit. Recent deep drilling indicates that these intrusions coalesce at depth. The strongest porphyry-style mineralization is centered on the eastern granodiorite pluton and extends into the surrounding rock units (Figure 1A). The western half of the deposit crops out at surface, whereas the eastern side is un-conformably overlain by a cover sequence of Late Cretaceous to Eocene sedimentary and volcanic strata. The deposit was tilted 20º to the east during the Eocene.

As the new millennium approaches, it is appropriate to assess the progress that has been made in mine health and safety, a matter of concern to management, labor and government. One can hardly look at the major events of the last century — from the birth of the US Bureau of Mines through the enactment of the modern health and safety laws — without realizing that the march has been relentless toward eradication of health and safety threats in mining. The progress is spectacular in mine safety and significant in mine health. In looking at the future, it is safe to assume that societal demands will increase for improved health and safety conditions in the workplace. So will the demands for greater technological leaps. The standards will for measuring success and the expectations of progress in creating a safer and healthier mine environment will grow. The possibilities are enormous of meeting these exacting requirements in the 21st century.

Consumption of abrasive materials in the United States increased 22% in value over that of 1982 to $320 million; of which, 59% was manufactured abrasive, 35% was industrial diamond (natural and synthetic), and 6% was natural abrasive. Production value of natural abrasives, excluding industrial diamond, remained virtually unchanged. Production of crude tripol, a porous siliceous rock, decreased slightly; however, shipments of processed tripoli increased 13% in quantity and 32% in value. Production of garnet, an abundant iron-aluminum silicate, continued to increase primarily because of further increases in production from one plant that had completed an expansion program in late 1981. Production of special silica stone, both crude and finished, decreased in 1983 because of reduced demand for oilstones

During the winter of 2001/2002, a number of seismic exploration projects were carried out in the Mackenzie River Delta area of the Northwest Territories, in Canada. The purpose of the seismic projects was to identify potential drilling targets for subsequent drilling programs, using explosives as a seismic source. Recent changes to fisheries regulations meant that blasting under lakes, the Mackenzie River and offshore from the delta, was not allowed to induce water overpressures in excess of 100 kPa in these water bodies, and that a water overpressure monitoring program had to be conducted to confirm that this requirement was being met. This paper describes the water overpressure monitoring program on one of the exploration projects, presents the results of the monitoring, and discusses the challenges of carrying out this work in the middle of an arctic winter.

For the year 1934, there were 382 oi1 wells completed for a total initial of 146,965 bbl. Fifty-three wells were deepened for a total increase of 8363 bbl., bringing the total volume of new oil to 155,328 bbl. As of Jan. 1, 1934, the daily potential of the field as determined by the Texas Railroad Commission was 159,740 bbl. Of this amount 26,429 bbl. is "marginal oil," and 2682 bbl. is exempt on account of water. In December, 1934, the daily potential was established by the Railroad Commission as being 297,501 bbl. with a daily allowable of 56,800 bbl. Of this amount 31,993 bbl. is "marginal oil," and 2183 bbl. is exempt on account of water. There has been no field-wide test made during the year, and as a result the rated potential of the field is in all probability much higher than the actual potential. As each new well comes in, a five-day test is made under the supervision of the Railroad Commission. The potential thus established is added to the field potential and shares its pro rata part of the market outlet, which is the allowable production, no allowance

An adaptive approach to control the deformation in tube hydroforming process is presented. This requires: the use of an existing non-linear FE software (ABAQUS) that incorporates a user material model (VUMAT), the development and implementation of an adaptive control strategy to coordinate the internal pressure and the axial load so as to prevent fracture and wrinkling failures (knowledge-base controller) and the application of the developed adaptive simulation approach for finding the optimal loading path required to hydroform a defect-free part with as uniform thickness distribution as possible (user's load subroutine (VDLOAD). In order to validate the approach, the case of conical hydroforming and the case of bending followed by hydroforming component is discussed.

This paper describes preliminary tests at the Bureau's Experimental Mine to determine, under conditions that may prevail in a bituminous coal-mine heading, how small a quantity of fire damp may bring coal-dust into suspension and ignite it. The results show that the explosion of as little as 150 cubic feet of an explosive mixture of gas and air containing 9 per cent natural gas may start a disastrous explosion of coal-dust. This is a very small volume, of gas, to cause such a result. Let us suppose that this amount of explosive mixture, as at the face of an entry which was 10 feet wide and the face was overcut to a depth of 6 feet and an upper layer of coal 2.5 feet thick had been removed, the recess so made would have a volume of 150 cubic feet. Furthermore, only 13 cubic feet of pure methane is needed in thin volume to produce this 9 per cent explosive mixture.

Inauguration of the new political dispensation in South Africa in 1994 initiated a dynamic shift in the ownership, management and development of the country’s affluent mineral heritage. The process of substituting the old South African regime with a new equitable system, started soon after the 1994 election of the African National Congress (ANC) to parliament. The Congress’ Freedom Charter revealed the intent of the new dispensation when it called for radical transformation of mineral development. However, since 1955 there have been important changes affecting the rules of mineral development. These are: •Firstly, a drastic change in politics ushered in by negotiation, a spirit of reconciliation and a desire to settle disputes peacefully •Secondly, the globalization of the South African mining industry in tandem with the opening of domestic mineral resources to foreign capitalists; and •Thirdly, the introduction of sustainable development as a holistic approach to mineral development in order to replace traditional narrow-minded environmental management. Each of these significantly shaped the new mineral investment environment of South Africa. This paper represents a summary of the historical developments leading to the current Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act No. 28 of 2002, its Regulations, the much-publicised Broad-Based Socio-Economic Empowerment Charter and its associated Scorecard.

During the period 1979 thru 1982, Multi Mineral Corporation conducted a mining I research program at the United States Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines Oil Shale Mining Environmental Research Facility in the Central Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The program consisted of mining, environmental and geotechnical research data and, the results are described in this report.

High Speed 2 (HS2) mandated that Building Information Modelling (BIM) processes be implemented during design and construction. Gall Zeidler Consultants (GZ) was responsible for developing the BIM Models for the portals, tunnels, and cross passages of the of the 16 km-long Chiltern twin-bore Tunnel. In addition, GZ developed the GBR for the Chiltern Tunnels and incorporated the relevant information into the Project’s BIM framework. This paper presents the implemented BIM framework, describes the modelling approach, and discusses the advantages and challenges of implementing BIM, particularly how BIM improved interface coordination and how BIM was used in feasibility assessments of different construction options.
