Tin plating operations are of a complex nature due to the many operational variables that need to be controlled in order to create a product of required quality. The work in this report lays the basics for the control of a halogen plating operation based on the DuPont tinplating set-up with regard to the chemical make-up of the plating solution, as well as operational variables such as temperature and current density. To evaluate these aspects of the process, a rotating cathode Hull-cell set-up was used. This allowed for a laboratory scale plating arrangement that simulates industry closely with regard to chemical and hydro-dynamic considerations. Typical industry accepted standards were obtained for the values of operational variables and a ?baseline? test was conducted employing these standards. All subsequent tests conducted were benchmarked against this baseline result. A large suite of results was obtained in which it was found that changes could be made to the industry accepted norm which would improve on the stability of the operation and therefore the quality of the final tin-plated product. Examples of these results are: an increase in stannous tin concentration, an increase in sodium chloride concentration and a slightly elevated plating temperature. In addition, conditions were found that must be avoided to prevent instability and poor product quality.

"Mill feed materials that are not run-of-mine ore are often a challenge for mineral processors and tend to accumulate in stockpiles, where they remain unprocessed for many years and become “slow moving inventories”. During a complete re-evaluation of the Clarabelle Mill operation (38,000 ton/day capacity) in 2000, it was concluded that there was an opportunity to assemble a 5,000 ton/day custom circuit to treat such stockpiles in the equipment that remained available during regularly scheduled maintenance shut-downs.This project was part of the larger Mill Redesign Project and involved testing the intended flowsheet under a number of operating scenarios for the first material to be treated: spent refractory bricks. The laboratory focus was on how to maximize returns using the available equipment and reagents.The circuit was successfully commissioned in the fall of 2000. As the brick stockpile was depleted, other potential feeds were evaluated at the laboratory, as well as in the new custom circuit itself. Processing of the spent refractory brick has yielded a significant contribution to the profitability of INCO. Significant opportunities lie ahead for generating more value from other slow moving inventories.INTRODUCTIONIntegrated mining operations tend to have slow moving inventories along the path from the mines to the finished products. Spent refractory bricks from furnaces and converters and furnace bottoms are materials that often end up in long-tern stockpiles. Such stockpiles are a challenge, although they represent small tonnages on an annual basis, because they are unique materials, which cannot be readily brought into the process at a rate anywhere near that at which they are produced, due to the high contents of deleterious components such as chromite or magnesia. Accumulation over years will eventually yield a metal inventory worthy of consideration given the right opportunity, such as availability of spare equipment or peak metal prices."

The Brunswick Mine Diesel Particulate Filter Study was one of several research projects initiated by the Diesel Emissions Evaluation Program (DEEP). The study was carried out at Noranda?s Brunswick Mine in Bathurst, New Brunswick by Noranda Technology Centre and Brunswick Mine personnel with the collaboration of Natural Resources Canada - Canada Centre for Minerals and Energy Technology (CANMET), National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Andreas Mayer of VERT, and diesel particulate filter (DPF) system suppliers. The study began in early 2000. Field evaluations continued for 20 months. The final report?authored by Sean McGinn?was submitted to DEEP in the Autumn of 2003.

The paper deals with new approach for measurement and evaluation of chemical microheterogeneity of elements in polycomponent metallic systems (i. e. steels, Ni-alloys). The method is based on the original mathematical model for determination of distribution curves of dendritic segregation of selected elements and on the original mathematical model for determination of the effective partition coefficients of these elements in the structure of analyzed alloy. Application of the method at research of chemical heterogeneity of continuously cast steel slab is also presented. The original results of measurement of dendritic microheterogeneity of eight elements (Al, Si, P, S, Ti, Cr, Mn and Fe) in structure of nine zones of a transversal section of slab are given.

"The mineral raw materials industry is a key-component of the Gross Domestic Product of industrialised economies, closely related to both the building and the industrial sectors. Despite this, at local level mining and quarrying are associated with both irreversible environmental damage and several visual alterations affecting the natural landscape. In this sense, SIA (Social Impact Assessment) has become a strategic tool that can not only improve the prediction but also the assessment of the social impact by involving the local communities in a participatory process. Taking into account the SIA experience, together with the examination of some relevant international case studies, it is possible to draw up a list of good practices for mining project management, from exploration through to closure and beyond, with quarry restoration. Such good practices will complement the existing studies, focusing on environmental issues, with the social issues arisen considered in SIA application."

This report includes a short history of uranium and its uses, mineralogy of common uranium minerals, and information on the use of electronic prospecting equipment and tests for detecting the presence of uranium. Details are given on geologically favorable areas and formations and practical methods of prospecting. Some information is given on the staking of claims, what lands are open to prospecting, and methods of securing mining rights. A forecast of the economic outlook for uranium is included. Appendixes give sources of additional information and a list of libraries where unclassified Atomic Energy Commission reports may be consulted. Because the increasing use of uranium by industry has revived interest in prospecting and exploration for this element, the Bureau of Mines has issued this report, which brings up to date and expands the subject matter of a hand- book on uranium exploration and production published in 1956.l

"The AMEC Oakville office is involved in the design and construction of an iron ore concentrator located in Liberia. Currently, the site ships Direct Shipped Ore (DSO) to overseas customers. The DSO mine-site and port can experience heavy annual rainfalls. The IMSBC Code requires that cargoes are only accepted for loading when the moisture content of the cargo is less than its Transportable Moisture Limit (TML). The moisture content of the DSO has, on occasions, risen to near or above its TML. AMEC was asked to advise whether the concentrate produced from the new concentrator would or would not have the same problems with moisture content and ship loading as the DSO.INTRODUCTION Liberia was, at one time, the world’s sixth largest exporter of iron ore and used some of the most modern mining operations of their time. However, the country has not produced iron ore over the past seventeen years because of civil unrest. The return of stability to the country has allowed the redevelopment of the iron ore industry. ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) obtained a concession for mining in the Nimba County area of Liberia (Figure 1) in December, 2004 and has studied the known iron ore deposits and former mining operations in this area. It began phase 1 operations in June 2011 with the direct shipping of high grade ore at a rate of up to 4Mtpa. The processing of the lower grade ore in phase 2 of the project requires additional processing capability to produce at the design rate of 15Mtpa. DSO and Concentrate The DSO in the first phase is selectively mined at an average grade of 60% Fe, and then crushed and screened to -10 mm with no washing or concentration. Testing of samples has indicated a size distribution that is finer than typical sinter feed material, although critical material below 0.10 mm is low in most cases, and overall the ore is coarser than typical concentrates or ultrafine products (Feasibility study report, 2011). The phase 1 DSO facility will cease operation after the phase 2 concentrator comes into operation."

ABSTRACT: When considering the rock stress component of rock mechanics design, the basic procedure is to consider the pre-existing stress-state in the rock mass and then estimate the disturbance to this stress state as a result of engineering excavation. Failure criteria are applied to the final stress state to establish whether failure will occur. However, during the evolution of the stress state, the failure locus may be reached before the anticipated failure state and, in this case, failure will occur unexpectedly. This indicates that the complete stress path (defined as the variations in magnitudes and orientations of the stress tensor components resulting from engineering-induced or natural changes) must be considered. We list a set of stress path principles with their corollaries and then introduce a new and powerful method for simultaneously illustrating changes in the six independent components of the stress tensor. This method plots the magnitudes of the principal stresses above their orientational paths on the hemispherical projection, to provide a three-dimensional stress path locus for each of the three principal stress components. In connection with this presentational device, we illustrate a number of concepts associated with the stress path in rock engineering. For example, we show how the minor principal stress approaches zero at an unsupported excavation face, the interchange of the trajectories of two principal stresses when their magnitudes become equal, and the influence of the bounds on the principal stresses given by strength criteria. RESUME: Si on s’interesse à la composante “contrainte” lors d’un dimensionnement en mécanique des roches, la méthode de base consiste à considérer l’état de contrainte pré-existant dans le massif rocheux, puis d’estimer la perturbation à cet état générée par l’excavation projetée. Des critères de rupture sont appliqués à l’état de contrainte final pour établir si une rupture va se produire. Cependant, lors de l’évolution de l’état de contrainte, la surface critique peut être atteinte ce qui provoquera une rupture anticipée et, dans ce cas, cette dernière sera inattendue. Cela indique que le chemin de contrainte complet (défini par les variations de l’intensité et de l’orientation des composantes du tenseur des contraintes liées à des causes anthropiques ou naturelles) doit être pris en compte. Nous présentons un ensemble de règles pour les chemins de contraintes ainsi que leurs corollaires et, ensuite, nous introduisons une méthode, nouvelle et puissante, pour présenter simultannement les changements des six composantes du tenseur des contraintes. Cette méthode consiste à tracer l’intensité des contraintes principales sur le chemin d’orientation des contraintes à l’aide d’une projection hémisphérique afin d’obtenir le lieu, en trois dimensions, de chaque contrainte principale. En relation avec cet outil de représentation, nous illustrons certains concepts associés au chemin de contrainte en ingénierie au rocher. Par exemple, nous montrons comment la contrainte mineure tend vers zero à la surface d’une excavation sans soutenement, le changement de direction des deux contraintes principales quand leur intensité deviennent égales, et l’influence des conditions aux limites sur les contraintes fournies par un critère de rupture. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Bei ingenieurmassigen Taetigkeiten in Felsgesteinen ist es noetig die ungestoerten Gesteins Stress Componenten, die vor einem anthropogen Eingriff im Gestein vorhanden waren, zu kennen und erst dann Vorhersagen ueber Stoerung des Stress Zustandes, der durch einen ingenieurmaessigen Eingriff hervorgerufen wird, herzuleiten. Kriterien fuer das Versagen werden im letzten Stadium, des Stress Zustandes angewendet, um zu erfahren ob ein Versagen wohl eintreten wird. Es ist jedoch zu beachten, dass waehrend des Stress Aufbaus ein oertliches Versagen eintreten kann, welches vor dem eigentlichen, erwarteten Versagens Zustand auftritt. Diese Moeglichkeit weist darauf hin, dass der gesammte “Stress Path” (definiert durch die Variationen der Stress Tensor Komponenten in Richtung und Groesse, hervorgerufen durch ingenieurmaessig hervorgerufene oder natuerlich Vorgaenge) betrachtet werden muss. Wir fuehren eine Liste der “Stress Path” Prinzipien auf und stellen dann eine neue und wirksame Methode zur gleichzeitigen Darstellung der sechs unabhaegigen Komponenten des Stress Tensors vor. Diese Methode stellt die Groesse der “Principal Stresses” in Abhaengigkeit von ihrem rauemlichen Weg auf einer hemispherischen Projektion dar und erlaubt hiermit eine drei dimensionale Darstellung fuer jeden Ort des “Stress Path’s” in die drei Haupt Stress Komponenten. Im Zusammenhang mit der hier gegebenen Darstellungsart, verdeutlichen wir eine Reihe von Konzepten in der Felsmechanik. Wir zeigen zum Beispiel, wie der “Minor Principal Stress” Null zustrebt an einer Wand von einer nicht abgestuetzten Ausschachtung, den Austausch von Trajektorien zweier “Principal Stresses” wenn ihre Groessen sich gleichen, und den Einfluss der Groesse von “Principal Stresses” bei gegebenen Kriterien des Festgkeits Versagens.

The world mineral industry has over the years experienced growth in the production of nickel (Ni) due to its use not only in the catalytic industry but mainly also to its demand in the stainless steel production industry. Hence there is a need to produce more pure and marketable grades of Ni through the use of efficient purification routes such as solvent extraction. The V10-LIX®84-IC system resulted in nickel (Ni) extraction isotherm shifting to lower pH levels. The pH window of opportunity for the extraction of Ni subsequently increased in solution containing magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) even though the system also resulted in slight shifts to less positive pH values for Mg and Ca curves. Results showed a synergistic effect of LIX®84-IC when added to V10 for all elements, Ni, Mg and Ca. The pH50 values for elements Ni, Mg and Ca in the V10-LIX®84-IC system were 2.95, 8.10 and 7.70 respectively. Comparing results obtained when using V10 alone produced ?pH50 for Ni, Mg and Ca being 3.35, 0.15 and 0.70 respectively, which was a confirmation of the synergistic shifts for all the elements. The ?pH50 (Mg-Ni)value was 1.95 with no synergism and 5.15 with synergism and that for ?pH50 (Ca-Ni)was 2.10 with no synergism and 4.75 with synergism. This showed that the Ni-Mg separation factor was relatively larger than the Ni-Ca. Improved loading and stripping kinetics were also observed. "Historically, mineral processors have used inferential data like plant instrumentation, assays, and grind sizes to monitor the performance of their plants. The ability to monitor the minerals themselves on a daily basis has eluded all but the very largest and richest of operations. The advent of a new generation of compact, robust, and user-friendly SEM-based automated mineralogy systems looks set to accomplish this, aiming to bring daily mineral monitoring of plant performance within the reach of all mills from mid-size upwards. This paper describes the use of this machine at Greens Creek Mine, a 2.5 ktpd Ag-Au-Pb-Zn operation with a complex flotation flowsheet. During the trial, the machine provided turnaround from sample collection to reporting averaging 24-36 h for key daily samples. All equipment was located within the compact mill, and proved highly reliable despite the challenging environment. Turnaround time was fast enough for metallurgists to understand, and, where possible, respond to ore and process changes while they were still happening. The plethora of data generated was filtered to a simple report whereby mill management could quickly absorb key daily mineral-based performance indicators. This paper will describe how the data was used to understand the key drivers behind metallurgical efficiency at Greens Creek, and how metallurgists began using the information to enhance daily mill performance."

Failure of rock materials is a process of crack propagation. Crack initiation takes place when the crack tip stress intensity K reaches a critical value called fracture toughness, K1C. The rock fracture toughness is known to be affected by the surrounding environment such as temperature, confining pressure and humidity. In order to examine the effect of humidity, a series of semi-circular bend tests were performed under various water vapour pressures in a rock material that is known to be anisotropic. Water vapour promotes stress corrosion of rock and therefore the fracture toughness was found to have a decreasing trend with increasing water vapour pressure. The rate of decreasing the fracture toughness depends on the microcrack density that promotes the migration of water vapour into the rock. Also in an anisotropic rock, the fracture toughness depends on the direction of crack in relation to the anisotropy of the rock material.

"In mining operations, it is widely accepted that strategies to drive operational goals must revolve around improving plant availability, reliability and process efficiency. In this paper, an integrated solution framework for reducing process variability, increasing process efficiencies and maximizing plant availability and reliability is discussed within the context of a typical milling circuit. The framework exploits a real-time analysis “gap” evident in production operations that prevents timeous identification of equipment and process failures. This is achieved by leveraging predictive analytics for equipment health monitoring, control loop monitoring and advanced regulatory control solutions towards enhanced process performance, improved asset management and regulatory compliance. The framework provides for early and actionable warnings on equipment and process degradation using real-time operational data.INTRODUCTION The changing landscape of gold mining and processing presents many challenges that threaten sustainability of existing (marginal) operations as well as deter investment in new projects. As existing “shallow” ore resources become depleted, mining operations are increasingly treating low-grade ores with complex and randomly variable mineralogical characteristics. For example, in South Africa, historically one of the major gold producers, the average grade of ore treated has been decreasing from averages above 4.5 – 5 g/t to current grades averaging less than 3 g/t within a decade (Chamber of Mines, 2012). Moreover, lower tonnages are being treated as a result of the narrowing of the available resource base. Also, the regulatory framework has tightened over the years due to heightened concerns on the safety, health and environmental impacts of mining and related activities."

The commercial application of electrolysis to zinc sulphate solutions for the production of metallic zinc is a development ·of the past twenty years. Earlier attempts failed to give satisfactory results, chiefly because certain harmful elements were either not recognised as being present in the solution, or, if recognised, suitable methods of removal had not been developed. The electrodeposition of zinc from zinc sulphate solution is extremely sensitive to the influence of a great many factors, all of which appear to be closely inter-related.Some of these factors tend to minimise the necessity for a high degree of purity of the solution, while other factors aggravate the harmful nature of certain impurities.The relationship existing betweBn the various factors in zinc electrolysis makes a general discussion of the injurious effect of impurities very difficult since, under one set of conditions a given concentration of an impurity may be of minor: importance, where its under another set of conditions the same concentration of that impurity may prove dangerous to successful electrolysis.

A general description of the geology of the Southern Coalfield is given. The relationship between the Illawarra Coal Measures, the overlying Triassic and the underlying Upper Marine Series, of Permian age as are the Coal Measures, is briefly explained and thestratigraphy of each is described. The eight coal seams are then treated in slightly more detail as to their thickness, quality, areas of distribution and best occurrences.In the last few years each of the authors has been concerned with one phase or other of the stTucture of the field in detail or in mining operations with the result that it is now possible to name a number of monoclines, anticlines, domes and synclines defined in detail. A minor quantitative study has been made of faults and dykes with regard to form, direction intensity and inter-relationship. It seems probable that with the further collection of data a more detailed study in these matters will be of considerable value to the economy of mining in the Southern Coalfield.

"This paper reviews the chemistry involved in the recovery of gold from cyanide solution with anion-exchange resins, and also discusses the most critical aspects of the engineering of an effective resin-in-pulp (RIP) process. As far as the chemistry is concerned, the conclusions reached by a great many researchers, as well as the performance of the only operating RIP plant in the Western World, at the Golden Jubilee Mine in South Africa, support the view that the process is technically viable and, in many cases, could prove to be more attractive economically than alternative processes such as zinc cementation and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). On the engineering side, there is still a need for further development before larger scale ( > 50,000 tpm) RIP plants can be designed, built and operated with confidence. However, the experiences gained during nearly 3 years of operation of the Golden Jublee RIP plant indicate that the process can be engineered with confidence for smaller operations ( < 50,000 tpm), and this will probably be the scope of application of the first-generation RIP plants. INTRODUCTIONThe use of anion-exchange resins in gold processing has, for a number of years, been proposed as an alternative to more conventional processes such as zinc cementation and carbon adsorption, and detailed research programs that have been carried out at a number of laboratories have demonstrated the technical viability of the process. Ruthenium (Ru) is known as a platinum group element with a very small production volume. In fact, the worldwide annual production of primary Ru metal is only about 20-30 tons, and it depends on the amount of Pt produced, since Ru is a byproduct from Pt smelting. The primary uses of Ru are as a material for resistors, as a catalyst for electrode materials, and as a sputtering target for hard disk memory storage. In order to recover Ru from the spent sand-blasting abrasive media generated during the cleaning of the apparatus used for Ru sputtering, a hydrometallurgical recovery process using hypochlorite solution has been investigated. In this study, various types of recycling processes that are presently under development are also introduced, and their features and differences are discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of the new recycling processes are evaluated, and the possibility of establishing new recycling processes in the future is discussed from a multilateral perspective.

Paper presented at the conference: Risk assessment in the extractive industries, held in Exeter, UK, 23-24 March 1994, and first published London: IMM, 1994, preprint volume, 18pp., 5 refs. A seismic risk assessment method has been developed for application to rockburst prone deep-level mining sites which have sufficient seismic coverage. The technique utilises several seismic hazard parameters simultaneously and assesses the seismic risk on a daily basis according to the individual levels of these parameters. Critical levels are determined from investigation of the long-term behaviour of the parameters in relation to recorded potentially damaging seismic events. The method has been applied to a data set comprising 15 months' worth of seismic data, with encouraging results
