Con los nuevos circuitos operando, la mina Huaron habrá reducido las resistencias de los circuitos de ventilación, por lo tanto, podrá trabajar posteriormente en controlar y reducir el consumo de energía por ventilación.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the properties of a Zn-0.75 pct Cu-0.12 pct Ti alloy extruded at temperatures between 400° and 720° F. The extrusions were made with a reduction ratio of 28-to-l and at relatively slow speed. Rod was also extruded at 560° and 640° F with a reduction of 255-to-l. With increased extrusion, temperature, extrusion pressures decreased substantially and creep resistance of the rod improved significantly. Coefficients of thermal expansion were low in the long rod dimension. Microstructures, hardness, and tensile properties were also evaluated, and a limited evaluation was made of bend ductility at 32° F for the rod extruded with the 255-to-1 reduction.

WE assemble again today in this comfortable, hospitable Inn to begin this, the 58th, Meeting of our Society. It is just a year ago when last we met but that year was, probably, the most portentious year in the whole history of mankind. In that year, the German 'Atlantic Wall' was broached, the Rhine was crossed, and Germany, as a Nation, has ceased to be. The agony of Europe is over; convalescence may be, probably will be, slow. But blood no longer flows in Europe. Time will heal the sores, cover the scars, regenerate the industries, rebuild the cities, and re-establish the people. True, the war of all wars is not yet over. True, a bloody conflict remains . But, the power of the United Nations now converges on one target. The rain of blood will be heavy. We can hope the storm will be short. The sun is on the horizon. The light of peace 1s in the sky. What of that Peace? Are we ready for it? Have we a 'sure foundation ' for our future world? Are the footings under that foundation broad and substantial? Can we look forward with confidence to a lasting peace and a fruitful life? The United Nations, even as this is being written, are in conference in San Francisco, placing the footings, rearing the foundations for a world edifice. There are bickerings; there are jealousies. The world is tired, and a tired family always squabbles. We can, we must, believe that the decisions they make, the edifices they rear, will be better than anything we each could effect separately. It will be a compromise, probably; it will carry things that will hurt us, just as it will carry things that will hurt others. We can, we must, believe that the good of the whole is a greater good than the good of the part. Each Nation within the United Nations must sacrifice something, each part of each Nation must sacrifice something, each individual within each part of each nation must contribute something, if the whole is to be wholesome. Sacrifice and contribution must be the order of the day if the New World we are about to build is to be worth while. What of Nova Scotia? The world has travelled far in the last year; how far has Nova Scotia gone? Canada has preparations for the Peace under way; what has Nova Scotia done? Is Nova Scotia preparing counter measures for the sacrifices it must make? Is each of us ready to contribute his share?

The flotation circuit and the reagents of the all-sliming flotation about low grade and hard operation on zinc oxide ore are researched in the paper. The results indicated that there are many types of zinc minerals in this ore, and the composition is very complex. They include hemimorphite, smithsonite, hydrozincite and so on. The ore is seriously sliming. In light of the ore properties, three kinds of flowsheets have tested. They are gravity concentration (cleaning tables), flotation, combined process of gravity concentration and flotation. The test showed that the recovery of zinc is only 17.08% in the gravity separation. In combined process of gravity separation and flotation, the recovery of zinc concentrate is close to 70%. But the flow-sheet is complex and hard to control in the production. The floatation circuit is feasible. In the test, it pay attention to investigate the new combined reagent which is used in selective all?sliming flotation process. The effects of slime are eliminated by the multi-loop treatment of middling. In flotation, the final recovery of concentrate is 88.76%; the grade is 29.50%. The recovery of physical ore is 93%; and the recovery of -10mm fraction is more than 65%.

"Vale has been actively evaluating new technologies to curtail diesel emissions. This paper discusses the selection, installation, operation, and evaluation of the MANN+HUMMEL SMF®-AR diesel particulate filter system to reduce diesel particulate matter emissions in underground mines. The system uses a sintered metal filter element, an iron fuel-borne catalyst with an onboard dosing system, an electric heater that uses onboard power, and a sensor-based control unit. More than 6,000 h of testing demonstrated that the system represents a breakthrough in the successful control of soot emission from light-duty vehicles with differing soot emission levels, exhaust temperatures, and duty cycles.RÉSUMÉ La compagnie Vale évalue activement de nouvelles technologies pour réduire les émissions de diesel. Le présent article discute du choix, de l’installation, du fonctionnement et de l’évaluation du système MANN+HUMMEL SMFMD-AR de filtrage des particules de diesel pour réduire les émissions de particules de diesel dans les mines souterraines. Le système utilise un élément filtrant en métal fritté, un catalyseur à base de fer dans le carburant avec un système de dosage intégré, un élément de chauffage électrique qui utilise l’alimentation incorporée et une unité de contrôle avec un capteur. Plus de 6 000 heures d’essais ont démontré que le système représente une avancée pour réussir à contrôler les émissions de suie des véhicules légers avec différents niveaux d’émission de suie, différentes températures d’échappement et différents cycles opératoires."

?Demand-side measure" means a rate, measure, action or program undertaken to conserve energy or promote energy efficiency?? (BCUC, 1996) In actual economical environment, business sustainability requires high-efficiency technological processes. That is why the efficiency concept has to be present at all levels of industrial activities. Nowadays, some purchasing decisions are still driven predominately by the purchase price, in spite of the evidence that such price represents up to 5 % to 7 % of the total costs of ownership with full consequences of energy efficiency and the impact on total ownership costs. The paper presents essentials of converter types and basics of the Global Efficiency (GEff) Concept that has been promoted over the last few years in South African industries (Pitis et al., 2006/7). GEff concept is proven as a useful tool used on price-efficiency decisions. Theoretical and technical aspects of this concept were substantiated with case studies. First part presented in this paper will describe how GEff concept was used on price ? efficiency decisions when single input or direct converters and systems (considered as low value equipments) have been replaced. Besides the impact of energy savings and new innovative developments, the paper suggests general other benefits of: ? Technical and economical performance improvements and competitiveness of mining corporations to international standards; ? Defusing incipient energy crisis in the sector; ? Improving environmental conditions; ? Creating new job opportunities in mining sector. Proposed concept in this paper could be further developed as models of improving companies? corporate energy policies.

St BarbaraÆs Marvel Loch operations have successfully used longhole open stoping as the primary mining method for a number of years. A transition to Core and Shell mining was implemented in 2009 to recover substantial ore grade resources remaining in sill and rib pillars. The transition to core and shell for the Exhibition lode required continuous waste filling of created voids and thus the removal of the crown pillar at the base of the Exhibition pit by blasting. Access to the top of pillar was denied as the pit was partially rock filled with waste rock from underground development.Beyond the technical challenges of the blasting project, a simple and transparent risk management process was developed to ensure appropriate controls and mitigating strategies were in place to minimise risk to personnel during the pillar removal process.Although failure of the crown pillar was anticipated but with the actual timing unknown, on 25 December 2011 the crown pillar yielded during normal mine operations. Engineered and isolation controls in place at the time were of a sufficiently high standard to ensure limited exposure of the underground workforce and minimal damage to mine infrastructure. Successful risk management through implementation of appropriate controls during the project lifecycle of two years and three months proved to be fundamental to the safe removal of the crown pillar.CITATION:Barrie, S C, 2012. The identification of potential accidents on construction sites has been a major concern in the construction industry and it needs a proactive safety plan to reduce the risk of accidents. There are no efficient methods for checking if safety measures are taken properly on construction sites. Consequently, workers on site are not given enough awareness about dangerous areas. In addition, construction sites are dynamic and on-site situations are changing in terms of permanent and temporary structures and facilities. This information can be represented using Building Information Modeling (BIM). This paper proposes the integration of BIM and safety risk analysis by considering the risk levels associated with the work spaces of different construction tasks. Work spaces are generated in a BIM model according to the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) of the project, reference objects in the BIM, and the schedule and resources of the task. Each work space is assigned to one or more tasks or functions, e.g., work spaces for specific tasks, shared spaces (paths), storage spaces, or spaces prohibited to workers. The assignment of work spaces is based on the workers, equipment and materials involved in the task. All the work spaces are associated with a specific duration according to the schedule of the project. Then risk evaluation of the construction site is applied in order to evaluate safety risks based on their severity and the degree of exposure of workers. For example, work spaces for storing hazard materials and for heavy construction equipment have higher risks than other work spaces. The results of the risk evaluation can be visualized in a 4D BIM model.

The pulmonary alveolar macrophage is a major defensive cell which counteracts the invasive properties of bacteria and particles when these substances invade the pulmonary environment. Pulmonary exposure to coal dust particles is believed to activate these macrophages to release a host of d1emical mediators which can neutralize or contribute to the harmful effects of these dust particles. Our efforts have been concerned with assessing a specific family of mediator substances produced by the alveolar macrophage from arachidonic acid when these cells are in contact with activating substances such as coal dust. Metabolites of arachidonic acid produce a vast array of effects which can impact significantly on pulmonary function both with normal pulmonary events and with pathologic processes of the lung. Our studies demonstrate that isolated alveolar macrophages obtained from rats or guinea pigs cultured in vitro release appreciable amounts of the cyclooxygenase products prostaglandin E2 and thromboxane A2 and release significant amounts of the lipoxygenase products .5-HETE and LTB4. In the presence of l x 104 -1x10·7 g/ml of a coal dust suspension, alveolar macrophages from the rats and guinea pigs alters their pattern of arachidonic acid metabolite release. In the rat, exposure of alveolar macrophages in vitro to the higher concentrations of coal dust causes a significant reduction in PGE2, TXB2 and LTB4 in a 4 hour time course study. In contrast, macrophages from the guinea pig in response to coal dust had little change in TXB2 release, only a slight inhibition in PGE2 production and an initial stimulation in LTB.t release over the 4 hour time course. Cells from guinea pigs released considerably more TXB2 than the rat under these conditions while rat cells formed considerably more LTB4 than guinea pig alveolar macrophages. These findings support the following conclusions.

A conceptual scoping study was conducted to investigate pre-concentration options for upgrading ore from an Ag-Pb-Zn deposit. The low grade of the ore would result in only modest economic returns, given current market conditions. Several pre-concentration options were considered. These included: selective mining, crushing and pre-screening (following either standard or high intensity selective blasting), bulk ore sorting, particle sorting, jigging, dense medium separation, or combinations of these approaches. Flowsheets were developed for each option, and the upgrade performance was modelled using Limn to determine mass balances and stream tables. Due to the limited availability of test work data, the models were based not only on what test data was available but also on case study data found in the literature. The Bazin technique was used to derive assay by size data for different streams following crushing. Equipment lists and preliminary layouts were established based on the stream tables, and capital and operating costs were estimated for each flowsheet. This information was used to carry out a preliminary economic evaluation using net present value and sensitivity analysis. In this case, the most economically attractive process was found to be particle sorting; although further benefits may be realised by combining with bulk sorting. The hilly regions of Kerala are severely affected by excess rainfall, causing tremendous damage due to landslides and slope failures. It is necessary to strengthen the existing slope profiles to prevent such disasters and avoid their risk to human lives and civil infrastructures. This paper studies the effect of micro pile to reinforce the slopes in Idukki district of Kerala, where slope failures are frequent. Three-dimensional slope stability analysis is carried out on slopes from the Idukki to obtain safety factor values using the MIDAS GTS NX program. The slope is fully saturated herein by taking the model's piezometric surface at the ground level to simulate high rainfall intensity. The critical slopes are then modelled with micro piles to analyze their effectiveness in improving the stability under static conditions. Different micro pile arrangements are considered, and a series of slope stability analyses have been carried out to obtain the optimum configuration with the required safety factor. The FOS values increased by more than 50% with micro piles for all the slopes. The optimum micro pile arrangement obtained for each slope shows that micro pile distribution between the toe and middle of the slope is an effective location for reinforcing slopes.

Two hydrated calcium aluminates , formed by side reactions in the leaching step and desilication step of the lime- soda sinter process , were investigated to better define their influence on alumina recovery . The two calcium aluminates , Caз [ Al ( OH) 6 ]₂ and зCa0.Al½ 03 · ( 8-12 ) H₂ ) , were prepared and identified by chemical and X- ray analysis . The relative proportions of each of these compounds formed in typical leach solutions at several temperatures were determined . The influence of free lime as a promoter of calcium aluminate formation was also investigated . The formation and precipitation from leach liquors of calcium aluminates contributes to the low alumina recoveries in the process . The presence of carbonate ion in the leach solution suppresses calcium aluminate formation and precipitation and results in higher alumina recovery . Hydrated calcium aluminates are formed in the aging of lime - soda sinters in the normal atmosphere .

"A drilled pier foundation was originally designed to support the proposed G. Wayne Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons on the campus of Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA. Reflective of the site geology, the original drilled pier foundation was divided into a Northern and Southern portion with an allowable end bearing capacity of 60 ksf and 100 ksf, respectively. After initial pricing on the original design, several value engineering options were submitted that featured changes to the original design capacity and construction method. The project team selected the value engineering option that involved conducting an Osterberg Load Cell test to assess end bearing of the site bedrock and skin friction. Results of the Osterberg Load Cell test justified increasing the allowable end bearing capacity of the site bedrock to 100 ksf in the Northern portion and 125 ksf in the Southern portion. Considering the final foundation design and Osterberg Load Cell test program, a net savings of approximately $259,000, or approximately 34%, was obtained over the original design.Project BackgroundThe G. Wayne Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons (CULC) is a 5-story academic building on the Georgia Tech campus in Atlanta, Georgia. The CULC was completed in 2011 and consists of a concrete frame structure supported on a drilled pier foundation.After pricing of the original drilled pier foundation design, several value engineering (VE) analyses were performed by the foundation contractor in an effort to demonstrate the potential for a reduced foundation cost. The VE analyses focused on variations in design assumptions, as well as construction techniques. This paper presents a case study that demonstrates how the value engineering process can be used to reduce foundation costs.Site Investigation and Subsurface ConditionsThe CULC building site is located within the Southern Piedmont Physiographic Province, an area underlain by metamorphic and igneous rocks. McConnell and Abrams (1984) indicate that the site is located at the boundary between two distinct geologic formations. The Northern portion of the site is underlain by the Wahoo Creek Formation while the Southern portion of the site is underlain by the Stonewall Formation. The following paragraphs briefly describe the geotechnical investigations performed by the project geotechnical engineer (GE) for the CULC."

Surface mining activities disturb large areas, produce great sediment loads and tend to be a source of water pollution if they are not managed properly. Coal mining in Indonesia has a very high risk of soil erosion because the coal mining areas are generally located in tropical areas with a high average of rainfall (4000 - 6000 mm/year) and use surface mining methods. The main factors affecting erosion risk are climate, soil type, topography, vegetation cover and management factors. Thus, the monitoring of erosion risk in mining areas is very important due to the characteristics of coal mining in Indonesia. The objective of this research is to determine the ability of satellite images (remote sensing data) and geographic information systems (GIS) to provide an accurate and up to date spatial database for the monitoring of erosion risk in surface coal mining areas using the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) method.The erosion risk analysis and spatial data processing are generated by the ArcGIS 9.3 software and need several data, namely: an erosivity map, erodibility map, a slope map, vegetation index map and land management or land cover map. The erosivity map is derived from the rainfall data, whereas the erodibility map is derived from the soil map. The slope map is derived from the SRTM-DEM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission-Digital Elevation Model) and processed using 3D analyst tools. Furthermore, the vegetation index map and land cover map are derived from a satellite image using digital image processing techniques.This preliminary study produced results that show soil erosion monitoring, which is integrated with remote sensing and GIS technologies, has great potential for producing accurate, advance, and low cost erosion risk maps in coal mining areas. This map is very important for getting spatial distributions of the erosion and useful for developing erosion management plans.

Mining operations that involve caving of the overlying strata are designed so that caving occurs in a controlled manner by progressive overburden failure. However, there are many cases where the overlying strata bridge over the caved area for longer periods than anticipated and desired. As the caved area expands with the advance of the mining panel, excessive amounts of energy accumulate in the roof strata which will be rapidly released when the overburden eventually fails.

This paper deals with the causes and mechanisms of pillar failure in a southern West Virginia coal mine. The conclusions are based on in-mine observations and analysis of mining methods, eyewitness account of the sequence of events, topographic and geologic conditions, and mechanical properties of mine roof, coal, and floor. The study indicated that massive pillar failure was caused by the collapse of the mine roof. The collapse of the mine roof was due to the combined effects of high lateral compressive stress and high extraction ratio causing excessive bending of the roof beyond its limit. It was assumed that the higher lateral compressive stress under such a shallow cover was probably due to the drastic change in the structural geology of the area and possible residual stresses. Eased on the analytical study it was concluded that the sudden release of elastic energy (shock) due to the rupture of the roof caused the squeezing of approximately eighty mine pillars.

This report has been prepared because little detailed information has been published on the production and use of anthracite producer gas for industrial-process and brick-kiln heating. To obtain this information, an investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with a building-brick manufacturer (firing both periodic and tunnel kilns with anthracite producer gas) and with a manufacturer of anthracite-gas producers. In addition to a study of available plant records, 2 weeks was spent in systematic observation and measurement during regular operation of the Hazleton Brick Co. plant, Hazleton, Pa., in July 1953. This report presents the results of this investigation and a description of producer and periodic-kiln equipment, operating procedures, and labor requirements. A summary of the conditions of producer and kiln operation is given for the 2-week observation and for the 11 preceding months. The two 10-foot standard anthracite-gas producers consumed 301 tons of Rice and Buckwheat No. 1 anthracite, as delivered, averaging over 13,000 B.t.u. per dry pound during the 2-week period, with a producer hot-gas efficiency of 95 percent, at an average gas offtake temperature of 5400 F. The yield of gas5/ of 153 gross B.t.u. per cubic foot amounted to 140,000 cubic feet per ton of fuel as fired, or 73,500 cubic feet per kiln heating hour, which was sufficient for kiln requirements.

Martin County Coal Corporation's operations are located on Wolf Creek in Martin County in the eastern part of Kentucky. The mining complex was started in 1971 and has grown to a 2.273 Mt/a steam coal operation. All of the production goes to Duke Power Company's Belews Creek electric generating station in North Carolina. Production comes from four seams that are mined by deep and surface mining methods. Surface mining accounts for 55% of the production and the remainder comes from 2 underground mines. Continuous miners are used exclusively underground. The preparation plant was originally designed to take coal at the rate of 907 Mt/h but that has gradually been increased to 1134 Mt/h. Other cleaning equipment includes Daniels DMS vessels, Model 77 Deister tables, 355.4-mm R. & S. Hydro- cyclones, Krebs 254-m classifying cyclones, Daniels froth cells and in 1980, 3 Krebs 508-mm heavy media cyclones were added to recover some lost and misplaced material. CMI centrifugaldryers and a Hey1 & Patterson size 100 thermal dryer are also part of the coal preparation equipment.

Les bancs de quartzite inhabituellement purs et epais decouverts lors de la cartographie geologique de la region de Charlevoix sont maintenant entres au stade de !'exploitation et se revelent etre une richesse naturelle durable pour cette region. Les etudes stratigraphiques effectuees dans cette partie (Quebecia) du bouclier canadien indiquent que la succession: lo. complexe a amphibolite et leptynite a la base, 2o. quartzite et gneiss a sillimanite, muscovite et gneiss calcosilicate et conglomeratique au sommet est constante sur de grandes distances (de Charlevoix a la Basse Cote Nord) et represente une sedimentation continentale et de plateforme, peu epaisse, du proterozotque inferieur. La purete et la grande epaisseur du quartzite s'expliqueraient par un processus de sedimentation continentale complexe ou se succedent climat tropical-humide et glaciaire-aride et transport fluviatile et eolien. Parmi la multitude de depots de quartzite qui existent dans le monde, peu sont de qualite superieure. Or, de par sa composition chimique, le quartzite de La Galette se compare avantageusement a ceux des meilleurs gisements des Etats-U ni s, de l'Europe de l'Ouest et de I' Afrique du Sud. D'acces facile pour l'exploitation, les gisements ne sont qu'a une quarantaine de kilometres de Baie Saint-Paul ou de La Malbaie, sur le SaintLaurent. L'utilisation en metallurgie du quartzite de La Galette comprend la production de silicium, de ferro-silicium et d'autres alliages de silicium . La composition du quartzite est en outre appropriee pour la production de carbure de silicium et de silicate de sodium. Les fines peuvent etre utilisees pour la fabrication du verre et comme matiere de charge.

Com o desenvolvimento de novos materiais para ferramentas de corte, os processos de usinagem de aços endurecidos (com remoção de cavacos em aço com dureza superior a 45 HRC) têm estado cada vez mais em evidência, de tal modo que, em alguns casos, substitui-se o processo de retificação por possibilitar a redução do tempo de produção e do custo de fabricação. Além disso, é possível obter peças com elevado acabamento superficial e tolerâncias apertadas. Este trabalho visa analisar o desgaste de ferramenta de metal duro e possíveis danos causados na superfície da peça através das solicitações térmicas e mecânicas originadas do fresamento com alta velocidade de corte no aço AISI H13 endurecido. A avaliação do desempenho das ferramentas de metal duro consistiu na análise dos seguintes parâmetros: vida, desgaste de ferramenta, dureza, rugosidade e microestrutura. Os resultados obtidos neste estudo mostraram que o material da ferramenta e a velocidade de corte influenciaram no desempenho das variáveis de saída citadas. As ferramentas de metal duro apresentaram baixo rendimento na usinagem HSM (High Speed Machining) e rendimento satisfatório com velocidades de corte convencionais.
