Iron ore fines are by-products of iron ore mining operations. Unlike iron ore lumps, fines cannot directly be used in conventional iron making processes, and consequently large quantities accumulate around the world. Pelletizing and sintering can be used to convert iron ore fines into agglomerates or briquettes for processing with lump ore, but these techniques are energy intensive and produce greenhouse gases. This research investigated the extraction of iron from iron ore fines using acetylacetone (a ß-diketone) as an environmentally friendly alternative process for fines utilization. A 2k factorial experiment design was used to identify the significant extraction variables. It was found that the reaction temperature and solid to liquid ratio had significant effects on the extraction process. The extraction kinetics were studied at different temperatures and the highest iron extraction (97 %) was obtained after 48 hours at 413 K and 0.025:1 (g:mL) solid to liquid ratio for a particle size range of +106 to -150 µm. The extraction products were easily separated from the unreacted acetylacetone by flash distillation and iron(III) acetylacetonate crystals were recovered. An economic evaluation showed that selling the crystals was profitable. Alternatively, the crystals can be reduced with hydrogen to iron particles and acetylacetone (for reuse).

The Bureau of Mines investigated the Gypsum-Camel deposit on Iyoukeen Cove Chichagof Island, Southeastern Alaska, from April 21 to August 26, 1948, as A part of the United States Department of the Interior program for developing an Alaskan construction industry. As gypsum is one of the components necessary for the manufacture of cement and one of the raw materials for plaster and plaster-board products, it is desirable to locate and develop a readily accessible deposit of gypsum in Alaska. In 1928, B. D. Stewart of the Territorial Department of Mines surveyed the gypsum deposits at Iyoukeen Cove, and during the summer of 1946 George M. Flint, Jr., and Edward H. Cobb of the Federal Geological Survey examined and mapped the old workings at Gypsum Creek and the prospect at Iyoukeen Cove. Both the Territorial Department of Mines and the Federal Geological Survey recommended the Gypsum-Camel prospect as warranting a diamond-drilling program by the Bureau of Mines. The Bureau of Mines project consisted of cleaning out and sampling, the old underground workings and diamond drilling from the surface to ascertain the lateral extensions of the deposit.

Zirconium has possible use in industry where severe corrosion conditions are encountered because it resists attack from a variety of corrosive environments. However, very little experimental testing has been done to evaluate the corrosion behavior of zirconium when simultaneously subjected to high tensile stresses and exposed to corrosive environments. This investigation was initiated for an evaluation test, but was limited to environments consisting of ferric chloride solutions which were known to attack zirconium and were shown to promote stress-corrosion cracking in preliminary tests. Tests for cracking susceptibility were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to show the effect of stress, solution concentration, air aeration of solution, and the method of mechanical processing. Tensile stress was applied to the specimens by a constant-load method which proved more reliable than a constant-strain method.

Recommendations from 44 mining industry workshops are summarized and reviewed in the context of Bureau of Mines research and development programs on-going during the period 1974-1977. Approximately 1,000 specific recommendations for research and development are summarized in a systematic and comprehensive format appropriate for review by mining research and development program managers. Relevant Bureau of Mines research programs are briefly described and some opportunities for future research and development are identified.

In the smelting section, flexible fuels such as coal or coke are used in place of heavy fuel oil in order to utilize energy sources more efficiently. Heat recovered from the off gas of the furnace has been converted by the waste heat boiler into steam, which is used for self power generation and for heating or maintaining various temperatures. The amount of the recovered steam in the smelter is currently increasing due to maximum utilization of powdered cokes. The heat source required to maintain the temperature of the electrolyte in the tank house is electric power and steam. However until recent year this steam was provided by its own heavy oil combustion type boiler in the tank house since the amount of steam consumed in heating the electrolyte is large. Though experimental work over the last few years has shown the advantages of reducing steam in the tank house by fully covering the cell, the implementation of the full cover can lead to other operating problems. However various improvements, mainly the covering of the cell with a simple device, have led to greatly reduced steam consumption. As a result, steam for the tank house is now provided by the waste heat boiler only bringing more efficient energy usage.

Entre 1983 et 1997, l'exploitation de la pierre de taille au Québec a été marquée par l'émergence et la consolidation de plusieurs nouvelles variétés de granit, provenant exclusivement ou presque de la Province de Grenville. Le Québec demeure toujours le principal expéditeur canadien de granit dimensionnel, avec des expéditions annuelles représentant près de quatre-vingt-dix pour cent des expéditions totales canadiennes de granit brut et transformé. La production annuelle de granit brut oscille, depuis 1994, autour de cent mille tonnes métriques. Cette production a plus que doublé de 63 000 à 140 000 tonnes métriques entre 1981 et 1990, mais elle a connu une chute importante en 1991 (67 000 tonnes métriques); cependant depuis 1994, elle est en forte progression (Ménard, 1998). En 1983, le granit dimensionnel était extrait de plus de vingt-cinq carrières, dont les trois quarts se localisaient dans la Province géologique de Grenville. Comparativement, en 1997, le Québec comptait trente-sept carrières actives, dont trente-cinq dans le Grenville (Gaudreau et al., 1998). Cette concentration des carrières dans la Province de Grenville s'explique par la demande accrue de nouveaux produits au fil des ans et par le potentiel élevé de découvertes de nouvelles variétés dans cette Province géologique. L'accessibilité au territoire, toujours plus grande, a facilité la mise en production de carrières favorisant la diversification des produits. Le ministère des Ressources naturelles du Québec (MRNQ) a consacré depuis 1980, beaucoup d'efforts dans la recherche de nouveaux gisements et de nouvelles variétés. En plus des programmes de subvention destinés aux prospecteurs ou aux compagnies, le ministère a réalisé des campagnes d'inventaire de pierre de taille, de pierre concassée et de pierre d'enrochement pour en connaître le potentiel géologique et à orienter les recherches futures (Nantel, 1983; Nantel et Martignole, 1991; Bellemare, 1995a, b, c, d, e, f, 1997, 1998a and b; Bellemare et Petryk, 1996a, b, c and d). Cette étude donne un aperçu des différentes variétés de pierres extraites dans la Province de Grenville entre 1983 et 1997, les situe dans leur contexte géologique et en localise les principales régions productrices. "EH-pH diagrams are useful tools in understanding how mineral surfaces react in solution and particularly how aqueous conditions can be changed to enhance mineral leaching processes. Successful application of these diagrams, however, requires that several considerations be kept in mind to prevent what had been termed as “gross errors” in their calculation and use. In this paper, the aqueous Cu-S system is used as the basis for explaining the mass-balanced method of calculating EH-pH diagrams with the STABCAL thermodynamic equilibrium software. A breakdown of the Gibbs’ Phase Rule and how it is used in STABCAL to modify the diagrams is included. The methodology was applied to the aqueous Cu-As-S system, and resulting diagrams were compared against examples of those generated using the predominant-ion method. The complexity of such diagrams increases with every additional component, and competition between species becomes more apparent, as can be seen by curvature in the resulting mass-balanced diagrams. The complete diagram for enargite (Cu3AsS4) is shown. It compares well with spectroelectrochemical measurements from Raman spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry studies.IntroductionInnovation in the field of processing arsenicbearing copper ores has been of particular interest. Copper arsenic sulfosalt minerals such as enargite (Cu3AsS4) and tennanite (Cu12As4S13) are now frequently prevalent in ore bodies as the oxide and easily leachable sulfides become harder to find. These minerals, unless pretreated somehow, concentrate in copper sulfide flotation processes, in turn concentrating the arsenic levels. Increasing environmental restrictions on arsenic content for smelters makes the hydrometallurgical processing of these concentrates more favorable. While enargite is considered one of the more refractory copper sulfides, more so than chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), there are still several methods, both industrially proven and in development, that are capable of processing these ore types. Alkaline sulfide leaching can be used as a pretreatment method to solubilize arsenic selectively (Delfini et al., 2003; Anderson and Twidwell, 2008; Tongamp, Takasaki and Shibayama, 2010a, 2010b), or the entire metal content can be leached using acid-type leaches such as acidified ferric sulfate (Dutrizac, 1981; Hackl et al., 1995; Klauber, 2008), or the chloride assisted, CESL (McDonald and Muir, 2007) or nitrogen species catalyzed (Anderson, 2003) processes can be used.As development of these leaching technologies proceed, it is also important to develop an understanding of the mineral thermodynamics. To date, there are numerous studies on the Cu-Fe-S-H2O system, particularly as it relates to chalcopyrite leaching, yet few studies have done on the Cu-As-S-H2O system. Computer-generated EH-pH diagrams have been employed to illustrate the importance of thermodynamic calculations in providing insight into such a system."

Recent underground nuclear tests in tuff, alluvium, salt, and granite have yielded data essential to the evaluation of mining applications of contained nuclear detonations. The data indicate that for these media the cavity radius is predictable within ±20% without regard to the properties of the rock in the immediate shot environment. Properties of the chimney of broken rock resulting from collapse of the cavity, on the other hand, are found to be related to the properties of the rock and its preshot structural weaknesses. Seismic effects and radioactivity distribution are sufficiently documented to serve as a basis for predicting the safety conditions associated with detonations for a variety of yields.

During 2007 and 2008, the project Optimal Fragmentation in Blasting II was conducted at the Långåsen quarry of NCC Roads AB near Arlanda. The main goals were:an evaluation of the effect of using electronic delay detonators (EDDs) in quarry blastinga validation of the design curve concept introduced at the Vändle quarry.Five production blasts were monitored. After a first trial round, the remaining four rounds each had about 100 Ø89 mm holes in a 14–19 m high bench charged with site mixed emulsions. In rounds 1 and 2, a tighter pattern than normal was used in one half of the rounds, raising the specific charge there from 0.7 to 1.0 kg/m3. Non-electric initiation was used with two holes per 25 ms delay in-row and 67 ms between rows. In rounds 3 and 4, electronic delay detonators were used instead, with 10 and 5 ms in-row delays respectively.The monitoring encompassed drill hole collaring and alignment, in-hole deviations, the rock structure in the bench faces from 3D imaging, first row burdens, etc. Eleven 400 t samples were taken from the muck piles and sorted in the quarry and sieved in the laboratory (lab). The lab data made up a fines tail that was grafted onto the in-pit sorting data to form sieving curves for the test piles. These curves were then compensated for the absence of boulders to construct the sieving curves for the blasted muck pile.These have been used to derive fragmentation model formulas for the non-electric rounds, also called design formulas. They are based on blast geometry, charging data and the properties of the rock mass. The formulas may be used to estimate the effect of changing blasthole pattern, borehole diameter and stemming length for example.The use of EDDs gave several unexpected results. In comparison with non-electric initiated rounds with a somewhat lower specific charge the fragmentation was much coarser; x50 increased from 160 to 200 mm. The effect of raising the specific charge in the non-electric initiated rounds from 0.72 to 0.99 kg/m3 was a much finer fragmentation; x50 decreased from 160 to 120 mm.CITATION:Ouchterlony, F, Nyberg, U, Olsson, M, Widenberg, K and Svedensten, P, 2015. "Résumé - Les seules productions de columbo-tantalite en Côte d'Ivoire sont effectuées dans les éluvions, colluvions et alluvions d'Issia, au Centre-Ouest de la Côte d'Ivoire. Même si un lien direct avec les roches granitiques est suspecté, aucune attention particulière n'a été accordée à l'étude de la minéralisation primaire en relation avec l'évolution de ces granites et des pegmatites associées. Ces granites, qui sont en intrusion dans les roches sédimentaires du Protérozoïque inférieur, comprennent: le granite orienté à deux micas (type Lobo), le granite orienté à muscovite dominante (type Bitapia) et le granite porphyroïde non orienté à muscovite dominante (type Issia). Les résultats de cette étude indiquent que les pegmatites à Nb-Ta-Be-Li sont liées au granite de type Issia. Les observations de terrain et les analyses sur roche totale montrent que: (1) les trois principaux granites de la région sont de type-S et peralumineux dans leur composition, (2) ils ont été formés pendant la période tardi- à post-Éburnéenne, (3) le granite de type Issia fut le dernier à se former.Les pegmatites liées au granite de type Issia ont été classées en quatre types : A- pegmatites stériles; B- pegmatites à Be; C- pegmatites zonées à Nb-Ta-Be; et D- pegmatites zonées à Be-Nb-Ta-Li. Les pegmatites zonées comprennent les zones suivantes: I- zone à aplite; II- zone graphique; III- zone à albite, microcline, béryl et columbo-tantalite; IV- zone à microcline massive; V- zone à quartztourmaline. Ces pegmatites présentent une zone d'altération métasomatique externe.La minéralisation de Ta, Nb, et Be est liée à la zone III des pegmatites de types C et D, la minéralisation de Li est associée aux greisens qui peuvent être observés n'importe où dans les pegmatites de type D. Les données de terrain et de laboratoire indiquent que le granite de type Issia est la roche parentale des pegmatites à éléments rares de la région. Les pegmatites minéralisées sont distribuées seulement autour du granite de type Issia et les patrons des terres rares des granites et ceux des pegmatites à éléments rares sont très similaires. Les analyses de la composition totale montrent un lien génétique entre le granite de type Issia et les pegmatites à éléments rares. Il est suggéré que les pegmatites ont été formées durant le transport et la cristallisation fractionnée du magma. Les éléments rares sont restés dans le liquide résiduel jusqu'à ce que les conditions favorables à leur précipitation soient atteintes.L'établissement de ce lien génétique ouvre des voies pour des nouvelles stratégies d'exploration."

"Cyanide destruction technologies are implemented at gold and silver operations to comply with the International Cyanide Management Code and meet ever more stringent discharge limits. Currently, the most common chemical cyanide destruction processes used in industry are sulfur dioxide/oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, and Caro’s acid. The cyanide destruction process used at an operation must reliably generate streams of acceptable quality at all times, and depends on numerous factors, including permit discharge requirements, tailings chemistry, location, site-specific climatic conditions and size of the operation. Selecting the most appropriate cyanide destruction process and determining the process design criteria requires accurate laboratory testing. This paper presents and discusses the results of a number of cyanide destruction evaluations that have been conducted to reduce cyanide concentration in process solutions or cyanidation tails. Laboratory testing provides important insights into reagent consumption and other factors required to achieve the target residual weak acid dissociable cyanide (CNWAD) levels.INTRODUCTION Process solutions associated with the extraction of gold and silver contain several forms of cyanide. The most toxic form of cyanide is free cyanide, which can be present as a dissociated cyanide anion (CN-) or gaseous or aqueous HCN. Weak or moderately stable cyanide complexes such as those of zinc, copper and nickel are classified as weak acid dissociable (CNWAD). Although less toxic than free cyanide, weak acid dissociable cyanide complexes are considered “ecologically sensitive” forms of cyanide and are regulated in most jurisdictions. In practice, reported WAD cyanide values comprises both free cyanide and weak acid dissociable cyanide complexes. Cyanide complexes with gold, mercury, cobalt and iron are referred to as strong acid dissociable complexes (CNSAD) and are much more stable, even under mildly acidic conditions. Another term commonly used in cyanide chemistry is total cyanide, which represents all cyanide compounds present in solution. Total cyanide levels in solutions are always equal to or higher than WAD cyanide values and the difference between the two usually indicates the presence of iron-cyanide compounds. Typically in Canada, CNTOTAL levels cannot exceed 1 mg/L in solutions discharged to the environment."

In many practical combustion systems ignition may occur through contact with hot burned gases . Such a process plays a vital role in flame stabilization on bluff bodies . It is also of importance in the ignition of firedamp by the hot spent gases of explosives used in mines . Also , in the communication of flames through narrow channels , a problem of practical importance in flameproofing electrical equipment , the propagation of the flame is essentially a reignition process in which hot burned gases are the agent of ignition . In the actual ignition problem a great variety of conditions may be visualized . Ignition may occur where pockets of hot gases are surrounded by cold explosive mixtures or where pockets of cold mixture may be surrounded by hot gases . Alternately , a flowing stream of combustible mixture may be initially in contact with another stream of hot combustion products , or a jet of hot gases may flow into a cold quiescent mixture ; the jet may be laminar or turbulent , continuous or discontinuous . The hot gas may also consist of the oxidant ( air for instance ) and the cold combustible pure fuel . This study by the Bureau of Mines is concerned only with ignition produced by a continuous jet of gas ( hot ) flowing into a practically quiescent cold mix- The investigation of ignition by bursts of hot gases or by turbulent jets is outside the scope of this report , and work performed on this phase of the problem has been published elsewhere

Interviews of 48 miners who escaped underground coal mine fires revealed that none of them had ever, before that incident, worn their self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) either in training or in a real emergency. Consequently, they were ill-prepared to use this emergency breathing apparatus. One persistent problem stemmed from the fact that miners had no notion of breathing resistance, nor of the fact that it would get more difficult to breathe the longer they wore their device. As a result, many of those who were interviewed had simply removed their mouthpieces and breathed ambient air. This is obviously behavior that should be trained out of the workforce. Unfortunately, because of high costs and difficult logistics, miner training is unlikely to ever include donning and wearing an apparatus on a regular basis. In order to give workers a better idea of what to expect from their devices, therefore, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a tabletop (paper and pencil) simulation based upon actual predicaments evacuees had reported encountering. The simulation is designed to emphasize important points related to donning and wearing a self-contained self-rescuer in a mine fire escape, and, by doing so, to bring miners' expectations more in line with what their actual experiences would be. The simulation was field tested in six training classes at three different mining operations. In all, 99 individuals were involved in completing the exercise and rating its properties. In their ratings 88% of the respondents indicated they thought the scenario could definitely happen in real life, and over 80% agreed they had learned something new. From the field test data it was concluded that the simulation had authenticity and potential value as a teaching tool. The simulation was therefore used in a pre-test/post-test control group experiment to determine whether it led to improvements in miners' scores on a true-false test of their SCSR's functional capabilities and proper usage. Eighty-three miners were included in this part of the study. As expected, miners who had participated in the training exercise scored significantly higher on their post-test than miners who had not.

En ese sentido, el presente texto describe el estudio de esta asociación mineralógica a través de la división de tres áreas: zona de Pacllón (sur), zona de Huallanca (central este y norte), zona de Tucu Chira (central oeste); en una extensión total de 60 por 45 Km. Asimismo, los minerales económicos se hallan con otros no económicos, deduciendo una serie de guias mineralógicas para la exploración minera.

ABSTRACT An overall study was conducted to evaluate the properties and processes influencing the rate and magnitude of consolidation for oil sands fine tailings produced using different extraction processes. As part of the overall study, a comprehensive description of physical and chemical characteristics of fine tailings generated by caustic and non-caustic processes was carried out. Ultimately, the influence of these fundamental properties on the compressibility, hydraulic conductivity and shear strength properties of the fine tailings was assessed. The characteristics of the fine tailings are presented in terms of index properties, mineralogy, specific surface area, water chemistry, liquid limits, particle size distribution and structure. A difference in water chemistry was concluded to be the cause of substantial differences in particle size distributions and degree of dispersion of the comparable caustic and non-caustic fine tailings. The degree of dispersion was consistent with predictions for dispersed clays established by the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) values for these materials. A linear variation of increasing dispersion with increasing SAR up to a SAR value of about 40 has been suggested, above which fine tailings are completely dispersed. The observed dispersed or flocculated structures (viewed using a scanning electron microscope) supported the predictions based on SAR values.

Since its inception, in 1987, the Copper-Cobre series of conferences has established itself as the prime world forum for discussing advances in copper process metallurgy, in particular copper sulfide smelting, copper recovery by leaching and electrowinning and copper electrorefining. All copper producing countries have actively participated in the pyrometallurgy symposia held in the framework of these conferences. In 1999 and 2003, the close to 100 pyrometallurgy papers that were presented had to be accommodated in two volumes. In the present paper, the authors firstly provide a brief historical sketch of the Copper-Cobre conferences and then focus on providing a retrospective look at the dramatic changes that have taken place in copper smelting in the last few decades, primarily as discussed in the Copper-Cobre and precursor conferences pyrometallurgy proceedings. Topics include: the development of autogenous, increasingly more intensive, environmentally sound and energy efficient smelting processes; significant improvements in Peirce-Smith converting practice and at the same time the commercialization of alternative continuous converting routes; the consequent expansion and modernization of smelters; the increasing compliance with strict government environmental regulations in most copper producing regions of the world; the realignment of the copper smelting industry throughout the world; and trends in copper smelting R&D. A look at the future closes these reflections on the contribution of the Copper-Cobre conferences to the advancement of copper smelting technology.

Global annual gold production has been remarkably constant over the last decade at ~2500 t/a3. The major producers today are China (annual production over 350 t and rising), Australia (250 t), USA (240 t), Russia (200 t) and South Africa (190 t and falling); these figures are representative of recent years but approximate. Demand from jewellery, investment, industrial and dental uses has been in excess of mine production for the last decade, by approximately 1000 t/a.Ongoing exploration is the life-blood for gold mining, and more so than for many other metals. Explorers consider sovereign risk, security, labour costs, commercial terms, land availability and inherent geologic prospectivity to determine where to focus their activities. Exploration success over the last decade has been shared by established major producers like Australia, Canada and USA, several countries in West Africa, and many parts of the Pacific margin. Although gold-only deposits have dominated world gold production historically, the gold-plus types, especially copper-gold, are becoming more important.Australia experienced a major period of exploration success from 1979 that has led to annual gold production rising from 17 t in 1979 to 250 - 300 t/a recently. Today, Australia has economic demonstrated resources of over 9000 t Au, which has risen progressively from 220 t in 1979. The majority of production has come from gold-only deposits in the Yilgarn craton in the southern half of Western Australia, but there are a few large Proterozoic deposits in central Australia including Olympic Dam, Telfer and Starra, which are mostly gold-plus types with copper and gold. Large goldfields in the younger host rocks of eastern Australia include the gold-only deposits of Victoria and North Queensland, and gold-plus deposits of New South Wales.CITATION:Phillips, G N, 2013. The effect of intensive milling on the conversion of microcline ( KAlSi3O8) to potassium chloride (KCl) occurred during the chlorination roasting process for artificial KCl production was investigated. A feldspar ore with 10.89% K2O grade and containing microcline was dry milled by a planetary ball mill for mechanical activation. Milled ore mixed with calcium chloride was roasted at temperatures between 500 and 1000 °C to get the chlorination roasting process. The product was then leached in water to dissolve KCl occurring during the roasting, which will be precipitated from the pregnant leach solution by evaporation. Results showed that potassium recovery from the unmilled ore increased rapidly up to 800 °C, and dramatically decreased at higher temperatures due to the removal of KCl from the furnace by means of evaporation. A potassium recovery of 31.95% was achieved by the unmilled ore, whereas it was 88.43% when 15 min milled ore was roasted at 750 °C. It was concluded that intensive milling caused mechanical activation of microcline to reduce the roasting temperature of the chlorination roasting process.
