PAYMASTER CONSOLIDATED MINES, LIMITED, began an investigation into the economy and use of detachable bit drill-steel in June, 1937. This investigation has continued to the present time, and was made necessary by transportation and distribution difficulties that had arisen through the use of standard steel in three widely separated mine areas serviced by a central steel-sharpening shop. Detachable bit drill-steel performance was first studied in the workings of No. 2 mine, where the rock being drilled was composed mainly of porphyry or tourmaline, and where standard drill-steel transportation costs had been excessive. The results obtained in this early work definitely established the economy of detachable bit drill-steel at No. 2 mine. This conclusion was reached when the 're-grind' system of re-sharpening dulled detachable bits was 1n use. Preliminary observations on the performance of detachable bit drill-steel in the quartz-carbonate veins of No. S and No. 6 mines gave encouraging results, and warranted a large-scale investigation under practical mining conditions. All drilling operations were gradually changed over to use of detachable bit drill-steel. This change was completed by February, 1938.

With the continued implementation of stricter limitations on the discharge of excess process water from all existing and future mining and metallurgical operations, the design and operation of the entire process water circuit must form an integral part of any total operational package. It is far better to æanticipate and circumvent the problemÆ rather than be forced into an expensive remediation program after the event. By far the greatest problem relates to the treatment and disposal of what is generically known as acid drainage. In simple terms, an acidic metal sulfate solution is generated by a series of chemical and biological reactions as soon as most sulfide minerals are exposed to air and water. Treatment of this solution by one or more of a wide range of chemical and physical options can involve substantial capital and operating costs, although there are recent processing options that yield saleable by-products, thereby reducing the financial liability of what is effectively a waste stream. This presentation provides an overview of the Australian situation compared with the rest of the world and outlines the basic features of a number of the more advanced passive and active acid drainage options.

How does SME-AIME cope with profound changes in technology, markets - and most importantly - in employment patterns facing its membership today? This is the question that prompted the Society's Board of Directors to appoint a Long-Range Planning Commission (LRPC) (see ME, Feb. 1984, pp. 118 and 128). This is also the question addressed most particularly by the LRPC's Scope Committee. The Committee started its deliberations by asking such basic questions as "Who are we?" and "What is our business?" The Scope Committee then reviewed the findings and recommendations of other more specialized committees to develop and integrate their concepts of the Society's business for the next 10 years. The policy-making suggestions of the LRPC were reviewed and acted upon by the Board of Directors at its open meeting in Los Angeles on Feb. 26, 1984. At the Oct. 23-26, 1984 SME Fall Meeting in Denver, the Board will again review LRPC recommendations. In answer to the question "Who are we?" the Scope Committee proposed description, which was accepted by vote of the board of directors: . . A technical and professional organization that consists of individual members, namely those mining engineers, metallurgists, geologists, earth scientists, economists, managers, educators, and other professionals concerned with all facets of exploration, production, distribution, and using of mineral commodities. "These mineral commodities include all metals; industrial minerals, including construction materials and fertilizers; coal, oil shales, tar sands, and other mined fuels. Among the earth's mineral resources, only wellpumped oil and gas lie outside the Society's specific purview. "Traditionally, SME members work in the fields of engineering, technology, exploration and discovery, development, construction, mining, quarrying, beneficiation and processing, handling and transport, equipment manufacturing, sales and marketing, data processing, safety, land reclamation, environmental protection, taxation, administration, and management of these elements. "Members practice their professions in industry, in universities and research institutions, and in government. They may be operators, manufacturers, sales persons, contractors, consultants, analysts, researchers, educators, advisors, regulators, or members of supporting staffs. "The members of the Society are leaders in dedication to their crafts, in innovation, and in the pursuit of excellence. Among their numbers they count the most distinguished of engineers, applied scientists, and managers. "The Society is based in the United States, is active on a worldwide basis, and is open to nationals of any country. Certain qualifications must be met for attaining and maintaining membership." Purpose of the Society As to the question "What is our business?" the Scope Committee restated our purpose in light of current practice and the constitution of AIME and the bylaws of AIME and SME. The Board of Directors accepted the following proposed purpose of SME: "To further the professional development and well-being of its members by publishing and distributing technical writings, news, and information; by sponsoring meetings of members; by providing forums for discussions and for continuing education; and by fostering communication on the subjects within its purview. This report, sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, presents the results of an examination of available safety assessment methods and their applicability to the mining industry. Standard safety analysis procedures were evaluated for relevance to the mining industry and mine operators' needs. The major safety concerns and needs of mine operators were identified through telephone contacts and a visit to a mine site. Safety assessment methods recommended for use by the mining Industry were also Investigated for potential adaptability to a user-interactive computer system. Several methods were determined to be immediately transferrable to the mining industry; these techniques are described in a user's handbook produced as part of this project. The handbook gives detailed instructions on appropriate application and utilization of these methods. Other techniques will require further development before they can be effectively transferred to the mining industry. These methods, their advantages, disadvantages and resource requirements are described in the final project report. Recommended system safety analysis techniques facilitate an evaluation of total mine system safety and a determination of safety-related interactions among systems within a mine. The application of these methods to the mining industry could result in reductions in both the frequency and the consequences of mine accidents.

The Haines-Klukwan-Porcupine subarea of the Juneau Mining District (JMD) is located in the northern portion of the JMD and consists of the land between the Alaska-British Columbia boundary, the Chilkoot Valley, Glacier Bay National Park boundary, and extending south to the Davidson Glacier and the Chilkat Peninsula and Islands (fig A-I). This area was studied as part of the larger JMD study in a cooperative effort between the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (ADGGS) and the Bureau during 1985 to 1988. Prior to this, during 1984, the ADGGS and the Bureau cooperated in a study of the Porcupine mining area and during 1981 to 1983 conducted separate studies in the area. Field work was conducted by foot, boat, truck, and helicopter. Figure A-I shows the Haines-Klukwan-Porcupine sub-area and shows the areas covered by previous Bureau and ADGGS studies. PHYSIOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE The physiography of the subarea ranges from gentle to rugged. Glaciers formed the major features in the sub-area and left "U" shaped steep walled valleys and rugged mountains. The Chilkat, Chilkoot, Klehini, Tsirku, and Takhin are the major rivers in the subarea. The higher mountains are glacier clad and some valleys still harbor glaciers that reach the valley floors. Lush forests and dense brush predominate up to timberline at about the 2,000-foot elevation. Low point in the subarea is at sea level in the area around Haines while the high point is 7,434 feet at: Mount Henry Clay in the Porcupine mining area.

The initial discovery of gold in the Eastmain River area, 310 km northeast of Chibougamau, was made by Placer Development Limited in 1970. This discovery resulted from the drill testing of an airborne E .M. Target located in an area of extensive glacial overburden, within an unexplored Archean greens tone belt considered prospective for base metal deposits. Intermittent exploration by another company between 1973-1977 failed to obtain promising results and the existing claims were allowed to lapse. In 1981, Placer reactivated the project and initiated intensive exploration during the next two years which included aerial E .M. surveys, claim staking, ground E .M. and magnetic surveys, geological mapping, diamond drilling and attendant borehole P,E.M. surveys. Beginning in 1983, exploration has been conducted on a joint venture basis with Eldor Resources Limited, The greenstone belt under investigation has an arcuate distribution pattern relative to a centrally located granitic core. Occurrences of gold mineralization defined to date are located to the south of the granite along a strike length of 7 km, and appear to be restricted to the lowermost of two mafic volcanic cycles. This lower cycle is dominated by basaltic flows with subordinate rhyolitic flows and pyroclas ties. Concordant, variably magnetic, massive to talcose ultramafic units occur towards the stratigraphic top of the lower mafic volcanic cycle and appear to crudely define areas considered prospective for gold on a regional bases. Economic interest in centered on a s tratabound, siliceous, sulphide-bearing unit hosted in a 15- 25 metre thick sequence of rhyolite tuffs, basalts and intercalated ultramafics, The siliceous ore bearing unit ( interpreted as a recrystallized chert) contains from 10%-30% pyrrhotite and pyrite with subordinate chalcopyri te and minor sphaleri te. Alteration is characterized by mica development, silicification and carbonatization. Garnets are also occasionally present in close proximity to the ore horizon. The sequence is south facing, and overturned to the northeast at 35°-55°. Explora tory drilling in the vicinity of two conductive targets has been on 100 metre centres along a 1 km strike length of the prospective sequence. To the end of 1983, two ore zones (A and B) have been partially drill tested with estimated indicated and inferred geological reserves of 1 million tonnes grading 11.7 g/t gold , 14.7 g/t silver and 0.26% copper. The system is open at depth. This discovery is the result of the effective integration of geophysics and geology with contributions by many over a long period of time. Key events that can be emphasized are: ( 1) initial area selection of a remote greenstone belt in 1969 - albeit for base metal deposits , (2) utilization of an airborne E .M. system which successfully targeted the A Zone in 1970 , (3) the timely reactivation of the project in 1981 and the subsequent recognition that the original discovery represented a sulphide bearing stratabound horizon with implicit volcanogenic connotations , (4) the intensive effort in 1982-83 deploying aerial and ground geophysics coupled to volcanogenic concepts of ore distribution which resulted in the discovery of the B and C Zones in 1982, and (5) the integration of downhole P . E.M. surveys and geology to successfully delineate ore at increasing depths . To the end of 1983 , $2.6 million has been expended, and it is hoped that continued effort will result in the eventual delineation of an economically viable ore deposit for the joint venture partners .

The presence of goethite in a hematite ore has been shown to strongly affect the time of heating to the firing temperature. The investigation of spalling of single pellets and of packed beds has enabled free water and goethite spalling to be identified as separate phenomena. In addition, it has been shown that even for an 18 inch deep bed of green balls the free water and goethite drying periods can be considered separately. Based on this observation, a method of predicting production rate and hood temperature profile is presented. The method required knowledge of the ore goethite content, ore grind and the green pellet bulk density. Laboratory results were found to be in good agreement with actual plant practice and have led to improved process performance.

THE American Engineering Council, which is the working body of The Federated American Engineering Societies, held its first meeting in Washington, Nov. 18 and 19, 1920. The Federated American Engineering Societies was formed in Washington in June and is composed of engineering and technical societies, national, state, local and regional. These Member Societies elect delegates to the American Engineering Council, which is the administrative body of the Federated. The meeting was called to order by Richard L. Humphrey, Chairman of the Joint Conference Com¬mittee, and the program (which is printed below) was carried out without substantial change by E. S. Carman, who was elected temporary chairman. Under the Constitution, the Council appoints an Executive Board, the members of which are chosen according to the proportional membership of the vari¬ous Member Societies in their respective districts. Under this plan, with the present membership, 'the national societies will have 14 members and the local societies 6 members on the Executive Board.

Barrick Gold recently implemented an oxygen roasting process to treat carbonaceous ore from its Goldstrike property in Nevada. One of the key project challenges was the design of the roaster gas cleaning system, which was driven by the requirements of a strict air permit and the need to achieve very high reliability. The roaster gas systems include multiple stages of wet particulate collection, a dual-alkali SO2 scrubber, mercury scrubbing, CO oxidation and NOx reduction. This paper describes the gas system, the influence of regulations on project implementation, and performance of the system.

Since 1995, when "freeze lining" refractory systems were introduced to the ferroalloy industry, they have gained in popularity, due to the freeze lining?s reputation for reliability, safety, and the contribution it makes to profitability. As with many popular and effective technologies, however, the freeze lining has spawned low-cost pretenders that claim the "freeze lining" name. On the surface they appear to contain some of the components of the technology, such as thermally conductive materials, but they fail to incorporate all of the principles that define a true Freeze Lining. The term "freeze lining" refers to the refractory system?s ability to maintain a temperature profile that is low enough to freeze a layer of process material on its hot face, which insulates the refractory and prevents direct contact with molten metal and slag. In doing so, the common wear mechanisms found in the submerged arc furnace - chemical attack, erosion, and thermal stress - can be prevented. These wear mechanisms are all related to high temperature; thus, they are prevented by maintaining low temperatures. Certain refractory properties and design concepts are absolutely necessary for the lining system to function as a true Freeze Lining. The paper explains these requirements and why they are important - the Truth of freeze linings - and further explains why systems that ignore one or more of these requirements cannot claim to be freeze linings, thereby exposing the Myths.

Central Alaska contains a wide variety of pre-, syn-, and post -accretionary mineral deposits that are related to the growth and evolution of the north-west North American continental margin. Withinpre-accretionary terranes, the Devonian-Carboniferous, carbonate platform-hosted MVT zinc-lead deposits of the Kandik and Reef Ridge districts in central Alaska, and the Devonian-Mississippian volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) polymetallic deposits of the Bonnifield, and Delta mineral belts of eastern Interior Alaska have received the most exploration interest to date. Syn-accretionary rift related, mafic and ultramafic sill swarms and zoned plutons of the Kluane-Nikolai igneous belt are currently being explored for Ni-Cu-Co-PGE deposits. Syn-accretionary granitoid complexes in the PurcellMountains, Illinois Creek, and Sitylemenkat areas have been explored for uranium-REE-gold, and tin-silver mineralization respectivelyPost-accretionary granitoid intrusions and associated volcanic fields that range in age from mid-Cretaceous to early Tertiary contain significant gold-silver-polymetallic resources in the East Central Alaska, Hogatza, and Kuskokwim Mineral belts. Collectively the three main post-accretionary plutonic/volcanic belts of central Alaska are part of the Tintina Gold Province, where exploration since 1990has identified about 848 tonnes gold.

For technology transfer to be successful a process, from research to full scale application, has to be followed. This paper describes such a process and how it is applied in practice. Recommendations are made on how to communicate existing knowledge and to ensure that a framework exists to effectively plan future projects with final technology transfer objectives firmly in place. An assessment of U.S. western hard-rock miners? noise exposures was conducted as part of a multi-year National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) survey of noise exposures in each sector of the mining industry. Noise from selected mining equipment and operator noise exposures were measured, analyzed, and tabulated for dissemination to the participating sites and are being used to direct NIOSH research and interventions to address the greatest noise hazards. Eighty-two noise dosimeter measurements were obtained, along with time-motion studies as the miners operated hard-rock mining machines. Ninety-six percent of the operators had daily noise doses that exceeded the Mine Safety and Health Administration?s permissible exposure level. The average gold miner dosages while operating the following equipment were: haul trucks - 261%, load-haul-dumps (LHDs) - 235%, single boom drills - 221%, bolters - 214%, and dual boom drills - 163%. The worst exposure level was a silver miner with a daily dose of 873%. Time-motion data showed that this miner?s exposure accumulated most rapidly while operating a jack-leg drill. These results will be used to help prioritize noise control development by NIOSH and other partners. A monitoring method for diesel particulate matter was published as Method 5040 by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Organic and elemental carbon are determined by the method, but elemental carbon (EC) is a better exposure measure. The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) proposed use of NIOSH 5040 for compliance determinations in metal and nonmetal mines. MSHA also published a rule making for coalmines, but no exposure standard was provided. A standard based on particulate carbon is not considered practical because of coal dust interference. Interference may not be a problem if an appropriate size-selective sampler and EC exposure standard are employed. Sub micrometer dust concentrations found in previous surveys of nondieselized, underground coal mines were relatively low. If a large fraction of the sub micrometer dust is organic and mineral matter, sub micrometer EC concentrations would be much lower than sub micrometer mass concentrations. Laboratory and ?eld results reported here in indicate the amount of EC contributed by sub micrometer coal dust is minor. In a laboratory test, a sub micrometer EC concentration of 31µg m 3 was found when sampling are spirable coal dust concentration over three times the US compliance limit (2mg m3). Laboratory results are consistent with surveys of nondieselized coal mines, where EC results ranged from below the method limit of detection to 18µg m 3 when size-selective samplers were used to collect dust fraction shaving particle diameters below 1.5µm sub micrometer EC concentrations were ?7µg m3. In dieselized mines, sub micrometer EC concentrations are much higher.

The Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD) is improving the sewer system in the Natomas area of Sacramento, CA. The Upper Northwest Interceptor (UNWI) system is an ongoing series of tunnel pipeline projects that will provide sewer conveyance for all residents of northeast Sacramento County to the New Natomas Pumping Station, located North of downtown Sacramento, also in the city of Sacramento limits. The New Natomas Pumping Station then carries wastewater flowsto the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in Elk Grove via the existing Lower Northwest Interceptor. The Joint Venture of Traylor Brothers, inc. and J.F. Shea (TSJV) were awarded the UNWI 1&2 project in late September, 2007. The planned 5.8 km (3.65 mile) construction route for UNWI 1&2 begins at the New Natomas Pump Station and runs north along the East Drainage Canal to the begin-ning of UNWI 3&4 at Bridgecross Drive. UNWI 1&2 includes approximately 5.8 km (19,240 feet) of 3.65 m (144 inch) inside diameter pipe using Earth Pressure Balance Tunneling Methods. The project also includes 16.76 m (55 feet) of 3.04 m (120-inch) diameter interceptor pipeline, twenty three access manholes spaced approximately 305 m (1,000 feet) apart along the alignment, a 2.13 m (84-inch) by 3.65 m (144-inch) transition structure, a 3.65 m (144-inch) by 3.04 m (120-inch) transition structure, and the connection of three existing sanitary sewer lines to the interceptor.

In 2002 a coal dust explosions occurred in the Polish collieries “Jas-Mos” and “Rydultowy” in the Upper Silesia coal basin. In the “Jas-Mos” colliery the coal dust explosion was initiated in the face of gallery by explosives and causing ten death. The stone dust barrier extinguished the flame, stopped the explosion development and saved forty nine miners working in that area. In the “Rydultowy” colliery methane inflammation caused three deaths and seven serious burns and ignited the coal dust explosion. The coal dust explosion was stopped by stone dust barrier and did not cause any victims itself. This paper presents the investigation carried out by the Central Mining Institute Experimental Mine “Barbara” and shows that the stone dust barriers remain still a basic mean for suppression of coal dust explosion in mines. The investigation were aimed at determining the cause of explosion and circumstances that led to their propagation. The evaluation of the state of dust explosion hazard in the areas of accidents have been performed, and the range of flame estimated.

The Brunswick plant is located in Costerfield, approximately 40km east of Bendigo in central Victoria. Crushing, grinding, gravity gold concentration and flotation methods are used to produce a saleable gold concentrate and an antimony-gold flotation concentrate. This paper discusses the improvements made within the processing plant which have resulted in a 99% increase in throughput over nameplate capacity of 6 250 average tonnes per month to 12 445 average tonnes per month and increases of 12% gold (from 2007 average of 78% to 2014 average of 90%) and 16% antimony recovery (from 2007 average of 79% to 2015 average of 95%). Key variables that govern the jet cutting process are examined based on fundamental theories of jet hydrodynamics and soil mechanics. Under normal conditions of jet grouting operations, lift speed and rotation speed are found to be of less importance than the depth of jetting, nozzle pressure, nozzle diameter, and the soil bearing resistance, with regards to their influence on jet cutting distance. An analytical equation linking the governing variables is proposed, which allows for the possibility of evaluating column diameters achievable in different ground conditions based on theoretical calculations. When used in conjunction with shallow jet grouting field trials, the equation can provide a means for extrapolating trial results to conditions at actual depths for production jet grouting.

The ST separator utilizes electrical charge differences between materials produced by surface contact or triboelectric charging. When two materials are in contact, material with a higher affinity for electrons gains electrons and thus charges negative, while material with lower electron affinity charges positive. This contact exchange of charge is universally observed for all materials, at times causing electrostatic nuisances that are a problem in some industries. Electron affinity is dependent on the chemical composition of the particle surface and will result in substantial differential charging of materials in a mixture of discrete particles of different composition. In the ST separator (Figures 1 and 2), material is fed into the thin gap 0.9 ? 1.5 cm (0.35 -0.6 in.) between two parallel planar electrodes. The particles are triboelectrically charged by inter-particle contact. For example, in the case of coal combustion fly ash, a mixture of carbon particles and mineral particles, the positively charged carbon and the negatively charged mineral are attracted to opposite electrodes. The particles are then swept up by a continuous moving open-mesh belt and conveyed in opposite directions. The belt moves the particles adjacent to each electrode toward opposite ends of the separator. The electric field need only move the particles a tiny fraction of a centimeter to move a particle from a left-moving to a right-moving stream. The counter current flow of the separating particles and continual triboelectric charging by carbon-mineral collisions provides for a multi-stage separation and results in excellent purity and recovery in a single-pass unit. The high belt speed also enables very high throughputs, up to 40 tonnes per hour on a single separator. By controlling various process parameters, such as belt speed, feed point, electrode gap and feed rate, the ST process produces low carbon fly ash at carbon contents of 2 % ± 0.5% from feed fly ashes ranging in carbon from 4% to over 30%.

This investigation was conducted jointly by the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey to obtain further information on the source and economic possibilities of the copper mineralization exposed on the Copper Giant group of claims, Ajo mining district, Pima County, Ariz. The Copper Giant group of claims was first brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines by Joseph Hunter (deceased), Phoenix, Ariz., part owner of the claims. In December 1942 these claims, and an adjoining group, were investigated by T. C. Denton, mining engineer, formerly with the Bureau of Mines, and Nels P. Peterson, geologist, Federal Geological Survey. It was concluded the area could not be considered as a source of copper for immed- iate emergency needs and that further investigation of the area, at the time, was not warranted. In the spring of 1948 the lessee, J. H. Greenway Albert, requested Bureau of Mines assistance in developing the property. J. H. Hedges, former chief, Tucson Branch, Mining Division, and Lincoln A. Stewart, mining engineer, Bureau of Mines, made a cursory examination of the property and noted that at numerous places, low-grade copper mineralization appeared on fractures and bedding of the Locomotive fanglomerate and Ajo volcanics, which are thought to be of Tertiary age. During the period of May 11 through 14, 1949, Bureau of Mines engineers3 mapped and sampled two areas of mineral- ization. On June 2 and 3, 1949, the areas selected by the Bureau and three other nearby mineralized areas were investigated by C. A. Anderson and R. S. Cannon, Jr., of the Federal Geological Survey. As a result of these examina- tions, further investigation of certain areas was believed to be merited. The Copper Giant area was selected as the most favorable in which to carry out exploratory and development work. The field work on the project was started in October 1949 and completed in December 1949. It consisted of road building, trenching, sampling, topo- graphic and geologic mapping, diamond drilling, and logging of core. Samples taken on the project and during preliminary examinations totaled 64, of which 63 were surface samples.
