"In order to investigate the fracturing of the bedrock and its possible heterogeneous distribution in situ, four boreholes equipped with double-U geothermal pipes of 100 m long were installed on the campus of the University of Liege (Liege, Belgium) over a surface area of 32 m². The bedrock, which starts at a depth approximately of 8 m, is quite fractured and consists mainly of siltstone and shale interbedded with sandstone.Different geophysical methods are applied at two different phases, after drilling the boreholes and after injecting the grouting material. The first approach consists in lowering an ultrasonic borehole imager (borehole televiewer; Zemanek, Glenn, Norton, & Caldwell, 1970), an instrument that acts as an ultrasonic transducer and receiver, into the boreholes to obtain high-resolution, continuous images with 360° coverage of the local geology and fracturing. Moreover gamma-ray logs of the four boreholes are obtained and inclinometry is conducted.After drilling the boreholes fiber optic cables are attached along the pipe loops and the double-U pipes are installed inside the boreholes. Then the grouting material is injected. The second approach consists in measuring the temperature along the fibers by applying the Distributed Temperature Sensing technique (Soto, Sahu, Faralli, Bolognini, Di Pasquale, Nebendahl, & Rueck, 2007). A laser pulse is injected into the optical fiber and the temperature along the fiber is determined by the intensity of Raman stokes and anti-stokes reemitted signals. Temperature evolution is measured during hardening of the grouting material. Local maxima of the temperature curve are probably due to a local lower thermal conductivity and/or a local larger quantity of grouting material due to gathering of fractures.A detailed fracture characterisation (position, opening, orientation, dip angle) is obtained based on the acoustic signal travel time and amplitude. The fractures are characterised by the same dipping and orientation but significantly vary in number and location in the four boreholes, despite the close distance between them. Gamma-ray data and observation of the cuttings during drilling result in rock identification through depth as well as in determination of the layer dipping. The inclination of the four boreholes tends to be perpendicular to the dipping. The combination of the two geophysical methods as presented provides information useful for the hydro-thermo-mechanical behaviour of the bedrock. The contribution of the thermal behaviour of borehole heat exchangers to bedrock investigation will be further studied by conducting Distributed Thermal Response tests (Fujii, Okubo, & Itoi, 2006). During the tests we will measure the temperature variation thanks to the installed fiber optics. These data will allow us to correlate any anisotropic thermal behaviour to the geological characteristics. The available information could be used for a detailed numerical model."

Gas in U.S. coals is primarily composed of 90 to 99 percent methane and up to 10 per- cent carbon dioxide. In composition and heat- ing value, this coal-bed gas is similar to natural gas and can be introduced directly into commercial pipelines after standard condition- ing. The high permeability cleat system in the virgin coal can be exploited in order to drain the coal gas well in advance of mining. Two premining drainage methods have been extensive- ly evaluated in the U.S.; they are 1) horizon- tal boreholes collared from within the mine, and 2) vertical drilling from the surface with fracturing. Limited-size fracture treatments are advocated in order to prevent potential roof damage and the need for added support. An engineering approach to predicting gas flow for different drainage techniques near mining locations is presented. Results can be used in design, i.e. pipeline, compressor. Coal gas drainage from a horizontal borehole and a treated (contained fracture) vertical well for a 6 foot seam have been evaluated. In spite of the widespread interest in rock bolt research, relatively little is known about the critical region surrounding the bolt anchor. In analyzing the stress distribution around an opening resulting from rock bolt support, it is commonly assumed that the bolt is fixed at a point far enough from the surface so that the anchor does not influence the performance of the bolt. Furthermore, a bolt anchor is assumed to per- form satisfactorily if it will hold the design load with a minimum amount of load relaxation, commonly called bleedoff. From the standpoint of the design engineer both of these assumptions are reasonable, but they ignore the fact that the extremely high stresses in the region of the anchor are capable of generating fractures in the rock. Lang estimated the bearing stresses for a slot and wedge anchor on a one-inch-diameter bolt to be as high as 125,000 psi. This paper describes a more thorough analysis of the magnitude of the stresses around the anchor and the nature of the potential fractures that might result.

Failure and fracturing are often regarded as synonymous. While this is obviously true in an environment dominated by tensile stresses, it is still not clear how failure and macro fracturing are related in a compressive stress environment. Excavations at great depths are typically subjected to compressive stresses only. The fracturing observed around such excavations is therefore commonly assumed to be induced by such compressive stresses. The physics of such a phenomenon have unfortunately never been explained properly, so that the formation of these so-called extension fractures still remains a mystery. As the presence of fractures is an important factor affecting the stability of underground excavations, it is of practical relevance to understand their formation. In this paper, a possible explanation is proposed. It is argued that fracturing in a compressive stress environment is a secondary effect. Primary failure, in the form of micro fracturing and associated damage is assumed to precede the major fracture processes. The fractures are thus generated in response to material failure and may not directly be the cause of failure. The implications for material response and behaviour are discussed. Boring of tunnels and shafts in hard rock under high stress conditions is becoming more common as mines and tunnels are developed at greater depths. Under the high stress conditions, fracturing of the often-brittle rock occurs in the walls, backs, and ahead of advancing faces of excavations. Fracturing can have a significant impact on boring activities: sidewall spalling, which affects machine gripper capacity, and fractures can also develop in the rock ahead of the face, leading to blocky rock conditions, which may have a significant effect on machine excavation. Fracturing may develop dynamically, leading to rock bursts manifesting in the form of strain bursts, which can be hazardous and destructive. In brittle rock, fracturing is commonly extensional in nature. The focus of this paper is on fracturing in the face of the excavation. Examples of such fracturing behaviour are described briefly in the paper. Numerical analyses were carried out to predict the initiation of extension fractures and their orientations ahead of excavation surfaces, and the resulting formation of rock slabs/plates, and the stability of these plates. The results should be beneficial for the evaluation of the conditions prior to, and during boring operations.

Durante a produção de aços em fornos elétricos a arco (FEA), o hidrogênio pode ser incorporado ao banho líquido através de diversas formas: umidade das matériasprimas, umidade do ar (no momento de abertura do arco elétrico), umidade dos refratários e etc. A fragilização por hidrogênio (FH) é um fenômeno decorrente da incorporação e retenção de hidrogênio, acima de certo nível tolerável para cada aço em particular, que gera altíssimas tensões internas e diminui, catastroficamente, a capacidade de deformação do material. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi encontrar a quantidade de hidrogênio (ppm) aceitável no aço inicialmente desenvolvido para fabricação de barras CA-50 (6,3 / 8,0 / 10,0 e 12,5 mm), obtidas em rolos por laminação a quente após instalação de uma nova máquina de lingotamento contínuo de tarugos. Para realização do trabalho foram realizados ensaios de dobramento a 180° conforme a norma NBR 7480/2007 e medições dos teores de Hidrogênio no distribuidor da Aciaria através do equipamento Hydris.

"The amount of new surface generated during fracture of coal and rock has been found to be directly proportional to the amount of energy associated with the fracture. To confirm this and study the relationship between the new surface and dust aerosol formed during fracture the U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted experiments simulating fracture as it occurs during mining operations. In addition to fracture energy measurements, fragment size distributions were determined over a size range of 0.5 microns to 1 inch. The size measurements accounted for the mass of the original sample. Material studied was Illinois No. 6 coal, coal from the Taggart seam of Virginia, and Berea Sandstone. The experiment employed a chamber to confine sample fracture fragments and a combination of particle measuring systems. Measurement methods included aerodynamic sizing of entrained dust aerosol with optical counting and inertial impaction techniques, physical sizing of non-airborne fragments by sieving, and optical sizing of fragments using optical counting and scanning electron microscopy.Results of the size distribution measurements indicate that a single size distribution law does not adequately describe the entire fragment size distribution. A combination of two size distribution laws, such as the Rosin-Rammler and log-normal distributions, is necessary to describe this size distribution. New surface created by fracture is primarily found 1n particulate between 2 and 50 microns with a mean size of 12 microns. It was also found that the specific energy of fracture can be linearly related to the .concentration of aerosol in this size range.Only a .small fraction, between 0.02 and 0.16 pct, of the dust particles .generated during fracture become airborne. The remainder adhere to the new surface created during fracture. An entrainment fraction, defined for a given particle size is the ratio of the mass of airborne particles to that of the total particles generated in that size range. This experimental entrainment fraction is related to the Van der Waals adhesion force and the electrostatic forces operating during fracture and is used to derive empirical parameters to model these two processes."

En ese sentido, el presente texto señala los diferentes métodos de fragmentación, según los esfuerzos que producen en las rocas y el modo resultante de fractura tales como: fuerza inclinada localizada en una cara de la roca, los esfuerzos de compresión paralelos a la cara libre, las fuerzas al interior de la cavidad y la compresión sobre una roca fragmentada. Both the 8 and A-C ore zones of the Heath Steele Mine contain extensive areas of brecciated ore. This texturally distinct ore type has been tentatively defined as a fragmental or conglomerate massive sulphide. It consists of subangular and round fragments of pyrite up to 30 em in diameter, smaller quartz clasts and chloritized, mineralized, lithic fragments in a faintly banded matrix of pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite. The chalcopyrite is concentrated in the pressure shadows of the fragments and appears to reflect remobilization and recrystallization during a deformation which postdates the formation of the clasts. A generally conformable relationship with the underlying banded pyrite-sphalerite ore, discordancy with the host banded argillites, spatial distribution and similarity to Kuroko ores suggest that the fragmental ore is of primary origin and that breccia formation is probably due to soft-sediment slumping or sliding initiated by volcanic explosions, as hypothesized for similar massive sulphides in various Japanese mines. It is nevertheless recognized that certain structural features in some clasts may result from deformation preceding the formation of the breccia, and at this stage a tectonic origin cannot be completely eliminated.

11.1-FRAGMENTATION PRINCIPLES WARREN W. KRECH Energy must be supplied to rock by direct or indirect means to fragment that rock. The amount is dependent upon the properties of the rock and the type of loading system. Fragmentation energy is consumed by three main mechanisms: (1) creation of new surface area (fracture energy), (2) friction (plasticity) and (3) elastic wave energy dispersion. The loading method determines the relative proportions and the amount of energy consumed in fragmenting a given rock type. Unconfined tensile failure consumes the least energy, with an increasing amount of energy required as the rock is more highly confined within a compressive stress field during fragmentation. The way energy is applied by tools to cause rock or mineral fragmentation is important in determining fragmentation efficiency. Rock-tool interaction should always be controlled to the fullest extent possible to optimize the combination of rate of energy input and fragmentation energy requirements. While the direct cost of energy, (dollars per horsepower-hour) may at first glance appear low relative to other hourly costs, there is a tie between power consumption and other cost factors, such as maintenance and wear. A high rate of energy application utilizing a rock-tool interaction producing only unconfined tensile failure would provide the most efficient fragmentation. No tool that produces a combination of high energy input rate and a loading system that produces failure under only conditions of unconfined tensile load now exists. Present mining methods and tools produce failure under conditions of high compressive confinement, high dispersive energy loss and high frictional energy requirements. Thus, while generally applying energy at high rates, they are highly inefficient with respect to energy consumed in fragmenting rock. To best design fragmentation tools and optimize fragmentation systems it would be desirable to know how rock properties influence breakage. At present, rock properties directly- related to fragmentation are undefined. Although present testing technology- does not permit rigorous definition of in-situ rock fragmentation behavior, several properties (mechanical and physical) commonly are used to indicate the relative case with which rock breaks. The more common test is for uniaxial compressive or tensile strength of cylindrical cores taken from intact portions of the in-situ rock (testing details are provided ill Sec. 6.2, Rock Mechanics). The strength of rock is influenced by the environmental conditions imposed on the rock. Those of most importance in rock are (1) confining pressure. (2) pore fluid pressure, (3) temperature and (4) rate of load application. Increase in confining pressure, as with increasing depth beneath the earth's surface or under the action of a fragmentation tool, causes an increase in rock strength. Increases from atmospheric pressure to 10.000 psi commonly cause up to n fourfold increase in the compressive strength of crystalline rock. Apparent rock strength decreases as pore fluid pressure increases, since it decreases the effect of confining pressure. The effective stress concept of soil mechanics generally applies to rock. Although chemical effects of pore fluids influence rock strength, they geologically are small compared to the confining pressure effect, except for a small minority of rock types. The mining industry is facing tremendous economic challenges. Fluctuating and depressed commodity prices, the ever-increasing pressure from environmental legislation and the competing global opportunities for capital investment are placing enormous strains on every aspect of the mining business. At the same time, mines are generally becoming older and deeper with all the logistical and rock mechanics difficulties that this entails. In the face of these new challenges the industry looks to technological advances to make operations more efficient and profitable. One approach is to develop and implement highly automated and computerised equipment as part of a trend towards major reductions in the underground workforce. This approach requires more capital investment rather than less and requires a more sophisticated and well-educated workforce with skills which are generally in high demand in society as a whole. It is difficult to see how the benefit that can be gained from such technology can justify the expenditures necessary to make it operate reliably underground on a daily basis. Nor is it easy to foresee how the mining industry, based as it is often in very remote areas, will be able to hire and retain sufficient numbers of people to maintain such fleets of equipment. Another approach, and the one which I favour, is the implementation of much greater control over the whole of the mining process. Mining is essentially a very simple process - we break rock and move it. The most cost-effective means of moving and processing the mining product depends entirely on the way it is broken - it depends on primary fragmentation by blasting. I propose that the way forward for the industry in the face of our present difficulties, is not new technology but is to utilise the level of technology which currently exists in ways which have traditionally been regarded as too difficult or too inflexible - improved fragmentation and the use of conveyors. The technical success of this approach depends on the complete re-design of the ore handling system from the face or stope drawpoint to surface. The fundamental issue which determines the success of this approach is designed fragmentation.

The paper addresses blast pattern fragmentation and diggability versus the blasting technique used. RESUME The author is the Vice President for Thunderbird Mining Systems. In this capacity he manages the mine site installation of surface mining mobile equipment monitoring and navigation systems. These systems are onboard instrumentation and software systems designed to: ??measure and log mobile equipments? production and health; and ??direct the equipment operators via onboard displays that show comprehensive maps and engineering instructions. The author is a mining engineering graduate from the Royal School of Mines. His work experience includes front line supervisor and mining engineer for Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting, mining engineer for Teck Corporation, and mining consultant for PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

Fragmentation is an important factor for improving downstream processes in mine operations. Six trials have been conducted at the Aitik copper mine to investigate the effect of ultra-short inter-hole delay times, i.e. smaller than 1 ms/m of burden, on fragmentation. Swelling, MWD data, and crusher efficiency were also evaluated for trials. According to the results, the effect of examined short inter-hole delay times, i.e. 0.14 to 0.86 ms/m of burden, on fragmentation was found to be marginal. Delay time of 0.43 ms/m of burden resulted in slightly finer fragmentation and larger swell; however, the effect of short delays was overshadowed by the effect of small variations in specific charge.

A blasting project was undertaken at the Teck Alaska Red Dog Mine in 2005 to 2007 to determine the extent that using electronic detonators could increase Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mill throughput. The results of that project were reported at the 2010 ISEE Annual Conference. This paper is a postscript to that project and provides the fragmentation resulting from the implementation of a 15% pattern expansion using electronic detonators.

The Mitsubishi Higashitani limestone mine is a ten million tonne per annum operation located near the city of Kitakyushu on JapanÆs western island of Kyushu. Higashitani is one of the largest limestone mines in Japan and accounts for about five per cent of national production. Blasting practices at the Higashitani mine involve the use of bagged ANFO, dynamite primers and non-electric detonators. Regulations in Japan prohibit the use of site mixed bulk explosives. Blast size is usually around 17 000 tonnes with 20 holes in a single row, two or three blasts are fired per day at a powder factor of between 0.25 and 0.32 kg/m3. As part of a program looking at oversize reduction Mitsubishi, Asahi and Orica agreed to conduct a joint project at the Higashitani mine to investigate the relationship between the powder factor and fragmentation. The first stage of the project was to benchmark the current blasting performance. Five blasts were monitored in each of the 210 (hard rock) and 220 (soft rock) areas of the mine. OricaÆs Powersieve« software was used to measure fragmentation and total rock breaker hours were also recorded for each blast. OricaÆs computer blasting simulation model Sabrex« was used to prepare revised blast designs with a higher powder factor and predict their performance. The performance of these blasts was monitored using the same methods.

Optimization of blast fragmentation in underground hardrock mining requires analysis of its effects on loading and haulage equipment, together with the downstream materials handling system, with the objective of minimizing total mine operating costs. A methodology is reported which has been developed to quantify the actual fragmentation and equipment performance in the field. This is data which has seldom been practicable to capture nor received serious attention in mines. Based upon the experience gained in underground studies, a prototype standard is proposed which aims to summarize the pertinent data, collection and analysis for fragmentation assessment. This relates to parameters of direct measure, such as mean size and distribution, as well as muckpile and work environment. The paper concludes by defining the impact of fragmentation on the loading and downstream handling system.

Rock particle sizes were measured at fourteen steep-slope Appalachian coal mines during production blasting. The distribution of rock sizes shows the effects of inter-hole timing, sequence of hole initiation, as well as charge distribution within each shot. Blast design parameters were selected to: (1) minimize displacement of broken rock conforming to throw control required of mining methods, (2) minimize seismic effects, and (3) create breakage at a cost economical to mining operations.

Highland Valley Copper (HVC) has embraced an integrated Mine to Mill approach to comminution since the late 1990s. Previous blasting optimization was carried out through adjustments to blast pattern geometry (i.e., reduction of burden and spacing). This approach proved very effective and HVC reduced the burden and spacing of high energy ore blast patterns to what was considered the practical limit that still allowed for efficient drilling and bulk truck loading operations. While mining in the bottom of the Valley pit near the end of the previous pushback, HVC encountered high static groundwater conditions which enabled the transmission of elevated inter-blasthole pressures that had the potential to exceed safe operating limits for initiation products. This risk was mitigated through an expansion of burden and spacing for the high energy ore patterns, reducing the application of blasting energy and increasing the average particle size in Mill feed.
