"Rapid depletion of high grade iron ores coupled with the increasing demand for the blast furnace grade iron ore in recent times has shifted the research focus on the development of appropriate technologies for the utilization of low - grade alumina rich iron ore slimes. These slimes are currently being dumped into tailing ponds owing to their high alumina content. Typical constituent minerals present in the Indian iron ore slimes are hematite, goethite, gibbsite and kaolinite. Considering the fine particle size distribution (<37 microns) in the slimes, selective dispersion-flocculation seems to be one of the most appropriate process which has been explored by us. We present our successful results on a natural iron ore slime sample obtained from one of the mines in India. We have been able to achieve a concentrate assaying >67% Fe, and <3% Al2O3 and 2.8% loss on ignition (LOI) from the slime sample assaying 60.4% Fe, 7.7% Al2O3 and 5.45% LOI with an Fe recovery of 62-69% simply by adjusting the pulp pH. We have scaled up the process to a semi batch scale as a prelude to commercialize it for the beneficiation of low grade iron ore slimes."

Leo-potpourri, was selected as the title to this paper for several reasons. First, it is a fascinating word--not looking like it sounds or sounding like it looks. It also allows for a great degree of flexibility in designing a presentation around it. Further, it has become popular to use this eco hyphen something pattern. We hear of eco-mania, eco-hysteria and the like. Lastly, in this era of intense environmental concern, two of the principle elements on which the integrity of our efforts must be equated are ecology and economics. Accordingly, the term "Eco-potpourris" allows me to roam at will through the great number of considerations that make up this environmental issue. Whereas only a few years ago the subject of environment and environmental control had low visibility with the public, today it competes as the focus of attention with the many other popular social issues of our time. The program content here at this meeting, for example, is liberally represented by papers dealing with one or more aspects of environmental concern. If one would look at the 1964 program, in contrast, I would expect that no more than possibly one or two papers covered this subject and even then that those papers dealt principally with the environmental aspect of occupational health. It is gratifying that the program at this meeting demonstrates a serious awareness to a broad spectrum of environmental concerns. It would be a mistake, of course, to believe that this clamor for a quality environment is a "flash in the pan" that will soon subside. Mining operations, especially surface coal mines, have great impacts on the local ecosystem and the environment. However, it has been a common practice in mine design that the economic evaluation considers only the operating and capital costs, while the costs incurred due to ecological damage are left out. Such practice underestimates the total cost of mining and ignores the difference in ecological impacts between different mine design alternatives. With growing interest in sustainable development, the mining industry is under increasing pressure to operate not only based on economic and engineering principles but also on principles of sustainability. Therefore, estimating ecological costs of mining and considering such costs in the mine design process is an important step towards reducing ecological impacts at the design stage. The objective of this paper is to quantify the ecological costs of open pit coal mining and to demonstrate the influence of such costs on the ultimate pit design. The ecological costs of mining are estimated based on the areas and types of land damaged by mining activities and the carbon emission from energy consumption. Four major components of ecological cost are identified, namely, lost value of direct eco-services, lost value of indirect eco-services, prevention and restoration costs, and the cost of carbon emission from energy consumption. Necessary equations are given for estimating these costs. An algorithm is described for ultimate pit optimization in coal deposits with near-horizontal coal seams. A case study is presented in which the ultimate pits with and without ecological costs are optimized and compared to show the influence of ecological costs on the pit design outcome.

"SUMMARYWaste management in general, and the water treatment of mine and mill effluents, has become an ever increasing burden for mining operations. A reduction in these expenditures would undoubtedly be desirable if this could in fact be achieved within effluent guidelines and monitoring requirements.A brief summary is presented of the research which has as its aim the development of methods which would reduce such costs and lead to solutions for environmentally acceptable close-out conditions for acid generating mine waters. The basic concepts of Ecological Engineering and Biological Polishing are presented, together with an indication of the present state of these research efforts. Details are provided of the progress of various experiments which aim to promote reducing conditions, organic matter production and the establishment of biological filters which remove metals from the water which are then retained within the waste management areas. These conditions should lead to a curtailment of acid drainage and an improvement in effluent quality.A description is provided of the first pilot demonstration using this approach to achieve a walk-away condition for the close-out of a massive sulphide tailings resulting from 10 years of operating a copper/zinc concentrator in Northern Ontario.1.0 INTRODUCTION1.1 Waste management and close-outIt is recognized that the achievement of a cost-effective and competitive mining operation, from the commencement of exploration for ore bodies through to the day-to-day efficient operation of the mine, requires a certain expertise and sophistication. "This paper is based on data generated between October, 1986 and October, 1989, during the implementation of an Ecological Engineering close-out for a zinc mine in Northern Ontario, where 690000 tonnes of tailings contain 41.1% pyrite and 4.1% pyrrhotite. The objective was to determine rates of sulphide oxidation and iron precipitation in the tailings. Those rates are relevant for the assessment of the long-term effectiveness of biological systems employed in the removal of heavy metals from contaminated drainage issuing from tailings.Data were collected on the topography and stratigraphy of the tailings basin, subsurface temperatures and groundwater levels, and chemical analyses were made of water samples collected from a number of piezometers. The thickness of unsaturated tailings varied widely between individual piezometer locations; annual maxima ranged from 0.67 m to 3.55 m, and annual minima from 0 to 2.68 m. Sulphate concentrations ranged from 36 mg/L to 20180 mg/L; iron concentrations from 0.36 mg/L to 9938 mg/L; and zinc concentrations from 0.33 mg/L to 1123 mg/L.The geochemistry of the piezometer samples suggests that some of the initial Fe content, resulting from metal sulphide oxidation, is subsequently precipitated in the tailings pile and, possibly, in the underlying unconsolidated sediments, probably in the form of iron-hydroxide and Na-jarosite. Other metals such as Zn may be co-precipitated with Fe. The discharge of a portion of these metals to the environment would be delayed by this process. Some of the initial sulphate may also be lost from solution, probably by precipitation of gypsum; approximate saturation degrees for gypsum ranged from -3.27 to +0.47. The precipitated minerals will somewhat decrease the porosity and permeability of the tailings.Sulphide-oxidation rates, calculated using the analytical results and the estimated amount of annual recharge at the tailings site, average 0.0057 mol/kg/yr. Calculated iron-precipitation rates average 0.000386 mol/kg/yr. It is concluded that the characteristics of seepage from mining wastes may change with time, reflecting the solubilization of precipitated secondary minerals."

The purpose of the research is scientific substantiation and formulation of strategy and technical solutions of handling liquid wastes of plants producing and refining copper-zink pyritic ores. In the course of research studied are chemical composition of technogenic waters of mining plants as well as water and alluvia of intake river within and outside a sanitary zone of Southern Ural mining plant using inductively coupled plasma mass-spectrometry and X-ray fluorescence analysis techniques. A particular focus is made on microcomponent composition. Novel data on Cd, Li, Be, Mn, Co, Cu, Zn migration with technogenic flows and accumulation of these elements in alluvia is obtained. It is showed that extraction of valuable components from technogenic waters is a novel problem for refiners that can be solved only in cooperation with mining industry ecologists. Laboratory research of selective copper and zink extraction into corresponding practical products by galvanocoagulation and sulphide precipitation is carried out. Common factors of phase formation are studied using physicochemical modeling, X-ray phase analysis and electronic microscopy. Methods of intensification of processes and increasing of extraction ratio of metals in products are elaborated. A technology of comprehensive processing of undersoil waters is proposed. Enlarged laboratory and pilot plant tests of technological solutions for protecting hydrosphere and extracting metals from mine waters carried out on several plants of UMMC-Holding Corporation showed a possibility of obtaining additional products having weight content of metal which is profitable for consequent metallurgical processing and purification of waters to comply with quality standards. A possibility of transformation of technological chain depending on season variability of water quality is put behind the designed technological schemes.

A new ecologically promising technology for the copper-nickel ore benefication using insert gases and pyrrhotite depression is under consideration. The finely dispersed nickel-containing sulphides and the pyrrhotite are easily oxidised during the process of flotation resulting in deterioration of selectivity and valuable component loss in the tailings. One of the ways to improve the benefication is the flotation of easily-oxidising minerals in an inert atmosphere. In the experiments nitrogen was taken as the inert gas supposing that in the industrial scale operations nitrogen generating, as a by-product of the oxigen production. will be used (Rybas et at, 1989). The most wide-spread mineral in the Norilsk rich sulphide copper-nickel ores is pyrrhotite containing iron, sulphur, nickel and platinum group metals. Up to 30 per cent of the pyrrhotite sulphur is recovered into the nickel concentrate causing the high sulphur dioxide emission in the further pyrometallurgical process of nickel production. This is the reason why the problem of the pyrrhotite removal during the ore concentration should be solved, the critical factor of the problem being the lowest possible nickel content in the pyrrhotite. According to the data of the geological and mineralogical mapping the nickel content in the pyrrhotites of rich ores varies from 0.3 to 1.8 per cent, with the mean value equal to 0.6 - 0.8 per cent. This assures the technological and economical effectiveness of the low-grade pyrrhotite removal during the flotation process.

"Among the problems of the civilization development, a problem of interaction between man and natural environment can be highlighted. In the twentieth century the human transforming activity had got scales of geological processes and defined the contradiction between the goal to increase the quality of human life and possibilities of the natural environment. Last twenty-five years after the World Summit on the Environment (1992) indicate that the development of civilization is still based on receiving super profits from the natural resources exploitation. This statement is confirmed by economy globalization rates, growing contradictions between consumption and production, depletion and degradation natural environment. A new technological order is formed at the time of growing world population, technological capacities, organizational complexity, from one side, and global scales of geo-resources consumption, on the other side. Sciences, determining the further civilization development, should take on the task to change the social worldview, since the preservation of human population consists in remediating and maintenance of biosphere functions as a regulator of ecological balance. The new worldview in the geo-resources exploitation is based on the Ecological strategy of mining development, which consists in reducing mining-induced loading on natural environment while increasing efficient mineral production and processing, and providing for a comprehensive solution of tasks on mineral deposit development. One of strategic trend of mining development is to increase complexity and completeness of useful component extraction from ore and mining deposits while reducing wastes and decreasing their stockpiled volumes. Although there is a growing awareness of the need for aesthetic resources such as space for recreation and natural beauty, the basic resources are soil, air, water, and minerals including fuel. Minera&apos;s and all sources of energy gain in relative importance with advancing technology and expanding industrilization. In the highly industrialized economy of the United States, almost every aspect of man&apos;s life is touched in some way by a product of, the mineral; industries. Agriculture owes much of its productivity to mineral-based fertilizers, insecticides, and mechanical equipment. Modern construction, manufacturing, communications, and transportation are all dependent on nonmetallic minerals, metals, and fuels. Throughout history, those nations with access to minerals, and the technology for using them, have gained ascendency. Before World War II the leading powers also were, leading coal producers. In order of declining rank the five leading&apos; coal producers were the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, the USSR, and Japan. That the military victory went to the side with the greater&apos; capacity to convert iron and coal into tools of industry, and weapons, is&apos; more than coincidence. It is a fundamental&apos; fact of existence. It is axiomatic that the United States must have a continually increasing supply of minerals if we are to meet the needs of our burgeoning population for a comfortable standard of living and for national security.

This paper is a presentation of findings based upon an econometric model of the world zinc industry. The model was developed as a simple but useful aid for long-run forecasting and planning purposes. A structure was developed for both simulating real zinc price effects on production and consumption, and for forecasting long-run annual zinc prices and supply/ demand levels. Moreover, a methodology is provided to incorporate the effects of: (1) historic technological advances in zinc supply, and (2) the development of the competitive plastics industry. Finally, reduced form equations are used to generate ex post forecasts to evaluate the model&apos;s performance.

A proper economic analysis of pit slope design must reflect the trade-off between the benefits and the increased risk of slope failure inherent in steeper slope angles. This paper describes the results of a case study in which a newly developed probabilistic economic analysis procedure was applied to the selection of a pit slope design at a large porphyry copper mine in the southwestern U.S. The paper also demonstrates the availability of the required data such as the probability of failure schedule and cost of failure models, under "real-life" conditions.

13.9-1. Introduction. Any mining venture or project is undertaken with a view of gaining some benefits, which, with the modern limited corporation, means earning a return to the stockholders for the use of their funds. Thus, any manager, when confronted by an opportunity of expending funds, must realize that the funds should generate a satisfactory return. The problem then becomes one of how the manager should best expend, if he should expend, funds for opportunities that become available to him. In the evaluation of a mineral property, or of a project within an operating mineral property, there must be cognizance of the fact that the final return is dependent on many factors that are not present in other industries. The primary factor in mining operations is the orebody, which has a diminishing life. This diminishing life gives the decision maker a range of choices; for by expending more capital for a larger plant, he can work the deposit out in a shorter period (16). This may, in fact, maximize the return on the investment. Alternatively, he may wish to maximize the total profits, a course which usually requires a lower capital investment and allows a longer working life for the deposit before final depletion. Other factors that have great importance in the evaluation of mining projects are the taxation treatment of mining profits from the viewpoint of depletion, depreciation, and investment credit. Investment opportunities involve expending funds at the present time in return for future benefits. These future benefits have a degree of risk in that the annual amounts of benefits and their duration cannot be fore- cast accurately. The treatment of risk in economic analysis involves the quantification of the degree of variability of the expected future benefits and also of the initial capital expenditure. Alkaline pressure oxidation (POX) is an oxidative pre-treatment option that is commercially used for high-carbonate sulfidic gold ores. The high carbonate grades within the feed ore shifts the ideal operating pH to a basic regime. Compared with acidic POX, alkaline POX typically requires additional steam input due to a lower sulfur oxidation load and a high rate of in-situ carbon dioxide generation that needs to be vented along with steam. The cost of this steam addition is the largest differentiator between acid POX operation and alkaline POX from a cost comparison. However, alkaline POX can offset these costs through reduced acid usage for pre-acidulation and decreased alkali reagent consumption for subsequent neutralization. This paper reviews the specific operating cost impacts of acid/base consumption between alkaline and acidic POX with ores which require pre-acidulation, the overall economics of alkaline POX, and the regimes in which alkaline POX is economically favorable. The findings aim to guide industry professionals in making informed decisions for alkaline POX adoption by providing a summary view of its operational benefits and costs, contributing to the development of cost-effective and sustainable gold ore processing techniques.

The increasing demand for rare earth elements (REE) in highly strategic sectors such as hybrid electric vehicles, renewable energy, communication technologies, and the defense industry has made REE production methods important. In recent years, studies on REE have increased rapidly; however there are many studies on REE, there are not enough studies in the literature on the economics of the beneficiation process. RE ores are generally leached after beneficiation by gravity, magnetic and flotation methods. In this study, direct leaching, attrition scrubbing and leaching, and flotation and leaching methods are evaluated economically based on the data for the Mountain Pass (MP) facility. According to the sensitivity analysis performed as a function of capital cost (CAPEX), operating cost (OPEX), and rare earths oxides (REO) recovery, REO recovery has the biggest effect on the process economies. Although the flotation method entails additional investment and operating costs, transportation and operating costs are significantly reduced result of the higher grade and recovery. The flotation method is more profitable, with larger NPV and IRR values and a shorter payback period.

Mining of copper ore and the related industries play an important role in Iran?s economy. Copper ore production in Iran accounts for 75% of the total production in the Middle East. All activities related to copper, that is, exploration, production, refinement etc are owned and managed by state owned companies. Decisions have been made to privatize all these activities. To assess the success of this privatization process, different components of the industry must be subject to economic analysis. In this paper, the cost estimation of all operations has been carried out. The total potential and attainable revenues have also been estimated using historical data available from the industry. Risk is a major factor in all mining activities and the copper industry of Iran has been subject to risk factors arising from many internal and external variables. These variables have been recognized and their effects evaluated. The effect of risk on the economic feasibility of the operations in the industry has also been analyzed.

"In-pit crushing and conveyor (IPCC) systems have become increasingly popular in the mining industry as an alternative to truck-and-shovel systems. Deciding whether to haul waste rock by truck or IPCC represents an important gap to be investigated in semi-mobile IPCC systems. A cost analysis is presented to evaluate the feasibility of crushing and conveying waste material in IPCC systems, along with sensitivity and risk assessments through Monte Carlo simulation. Although the capital expenditure is higher, results showed waste crushing will be feasible in deep pits and over long mine life and haul distances.RÉSUMÉ La popularité des systèmes de concassage et de transport dans la fosse minière (IPCC, de l’anglais In-pit crushing and conveyor) n’a cessé de croître dans l’industrie minière ; ils constituent en effet une option intéressante de remplacement des systèmes par camions et pelles mécaniques. Le choix entre le transport des stériles par camions ou par IPCC est encore difficile à faire et devra faire l’objet d’une étude approfondie au niveau des systèmes d’IPCC semi-mobiles. Une analyse des coûts est présentée pour évaluer la faisabilité du concassage et du transport des stériles par les systèmes d’IPCC, de même que des évaluations de la sensibilité et des risques par le biais de la simulation de Monte Carlo. Si les dépenses en immobilisations s’avèrent être plus élevées, les résultats ont cependant montré que le concassage des stériles sera envisageable dans des fosses profondes ainsi que sur une longue durée de vie et de longues distances de transport. INTRODUCTIONThe mining industry is currently facing many challenges such as low commodity prices, increasing environmental concerns and regulations, lower grades, deeper mines, and greater waste-rock quantities. As a result, the profitability of mining operations has decreased, with many mines stopping or suspending operations, and many new projects being postponed. Mining companies have therefore focused on improvements and innovations to increase the cost effectiveness of operations, for example, increasing production capacity to take advantage of the economies of scale (Crowson, 2003) and decreasing the unit operation cost. Changes in production capacity force mining companies to evaluate alternative material handling systems.During the past few decades and within material handling systems, significant improvements have been made to truck performance and capacity. Consequently, operating expenditures (OPEX) associated with fuel and maintenance have risen swiftly. In a mining operation, truck hauling systems now represent 40–50% of the capital cost and approximately 45% of the OPEX (Tutton & Streck, 2009). Additionally, material transportation costs are expected to increase due to longer haul distances arising from deeper and larger mines (Fleet et al., 2015). Finally, large fluctuations in fuel prices result in high risks associated with truck OPEX. According to the United States Energy Information Administration (2015), the cost of crude oil—the largest component of the retail price of diesel fuel—increased from US$24.31/barrel in 1986 to US$46.92/barrel in 2016, peaking at US$151.72/barrel in 2008 (Macrotrends, 2016)."
