In ME'S 1994 Powder River Basin (PRB) coal transportation article, the lead author described some destinations pursued by the railroads. As with many destinations, though, they turned out to be merely stops on the way to places that have yet to be reached. Along the way, the railroads discovered that making it better is a continuous process, not just something done in several phases. This was always known but not at the awareness level that exists in 1998 railroad environments. This update of the 1994 article includes railroad companies' plans for the future of rail transportation in the PRB.

A study was made of frictional ignitions in the underground coal mining industry from 1980 to 1992. The population of frictional ignitions was correlated to a variety of potential contributing factors including the mined coalbed, geographic location, mine production, methane gas emissions, and the type of mining equipment in use. The number of frictional ignitions reported in 1991 and 1992 surpassed the annual totals in all previous years included in the study. Most frictional ignitions occur during cutting operations at a coal face by a continuous miner. The average coal production of mines experiencing frictional ignitions is greater than the average of all underground coal mines throughout the survey period. Methane drainage may have produced a drop in the ratio of gas emissions to coal production (E/P) in mines experiencing frictional ignitions.

OSIRIS is a continuous monitoring system for respirable dust which has been specifically designed for mining and related industries. By using the latest microprocessor technology, OSIRIS provides a sophisticated dust measuring system which is a cost effective alternative to regular gravimetric sampling. The system is certified intrinsically safe for use underground. Up to eight underground OSIRIS sensors can be controlled and monitored by a single IBM PC computer located at the mine surface. This computer provides continuous and instantaneous information about the dust concentrations at the sites being monitored. Information is available in tabular and graphical form. The paper gives details of proving trials of the OSIRIS system in some UK coal mines. During these trials, adjacent OSIRIS sensors placed on the same underground roadway cross-section gave virtually identical results. Throughout a good correlation was obtained with conventional gravimetric dust samples. The OSIRIS equipment proved both reliable and easy to operate. Until the suspension of conventional operations in 1996, the White Pine Mine was the second-largest active underground copper mine in the United States, underlying an area of approximately 30 km2 (13 sq. miles) in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The mine operator intends to initiate in-stope solution copper mining by circulating a solution (lixiviant) of mine water, sulfuric acid and ferric iron through rubblized ore. As planned, the solution would be retired in the mined-out stopes following completion of the solution-mining activities. Investigations into the fate of the retired solution indicated that the solution, through time, would change from an acidic, metal-rich solution to a near-neutral, reducing solution containing much lower concentrations of metals. Investigations included reaction-path modeling (EQ3/6) and laboratory and in-mine tests. The combination of neutralization and reduction will result in precipitation of most metals, primarily as metallic sulfates, chlorides and sulfides.

INTRODUCTION The use of precast concrete tunnel liners as the initial and final tunnel lining for transit systems has been a major consideration of designers for over three decades. The obvious benefit of building a tunnel that requires only a single pass in constructing the structural lining can provide the opportunity of saving both time and cost. This technique has had worldwide application in transit systems in London, Munich, Hong Kong, Toronto to name a few. In the United States precast liners were evaluated for use on the BART System in San Francisco in the early 1960's but did not provide sufficient confidence in the sealing capabilities available at that time. In 1976 it was decided to call for bids on the Lexington Market Tunnels in Baltimore with a precast concrete liner alternative for one of the tunnel drives. This option was selected by the owner and UMTA to provide a study evaluation for the benefit of the industry. HISTORY In 1983 Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority began calling for a series of bids on soft ground tunnels on the Green Line, which included the option of using precast concrete tunnel liners first as an alternative to fabricated steel tunnel liners. A review of the literature reveals that methods for simulating the coupled behavior of size reduction and liberation are limited to binary mineral systems containing one composite particle class. The aim of this paper is to describe the development of a mathematical model to simulate such behavior for binary and ternary systems containing multiple classes of composite particles. A modified Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm and a finite difference Jacobian are used in conjunction with the developed model and a set of constrained equations to estimate all kinetic parameters. This estimation scheme is validated far a binary ore (sphalerite-dolomite) with five composite particle classes using experimental data.

An attempt was made to beneficiate low-grade, high-phosphorus manganese ores of the Garividi-Garbham region of Andhra Pradesh, India, by using wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS). The distribution behavior of both mass and chemical constituents in different size fractions of a typical highly weathered ore sample was studied to obtain information about the liberation characteristics of various chemical constituents. Magnetic separation indicated that in the +208-µm size fractions, P and acid insolubles were concentrated in the magnetic fractions. However, in the -208-µm size fractions, P and acid insolubles were concentrated in the nonmagnetic fraction because of a lower recovery of the magnetic fraction. Variations in field intensity between 1.3 and 1.75 T had little effect on the recovery and the grade of concentrate. The results also demonstrated that phosphorus was associated with all three major constituent phases, namely, oxides of Mn and Fe and aluminosilicate gangue minerals.

This paper presents the highlights of a general-purpose simulator for mineral processing plants that is being developed at the University of California, Berkeley. The state-of-the-art structured design methodogy based on a top-down design approach is being used to construct a modular and completely structured simulator such that it is independent of the unit operation models and routines. The simulator provides for two levels of operation allowing prebuilt or user-built simulation flowsheets depending upon the degree of computer knowledge expected of the user. The philosophy used in designing this simulator appears to be unique in the field of flowsheet simulation. The paper also includes a mini-example demonstrating the usage of the simulator.

The Falconbridge Dominicana laboratory receives samples from all parts of the operation. Ore, metal and oil samples are taken by operating departments, gas and water samples by the laboratory staff. Physical sample preparation is essentially standard and produces comminuted samples for wet-chemical analysis and X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF). T he main operating sections of the laboratory are described indicating in each case the type of instrumentation and method used, sample types analysed and comments on problems experienced. Emphasis is given to the sample preparation and X-ray sections especially with regard to the difficulties caused by our heterogenous ore material, calibration of the instrument and operational malfunctions. General problems related to our remote location and the tropical climate are discussed. Limited statistics on instrument availability, and stability, accuracy, precision, etc., are given.

Electrochemical oxidation of arsenopyrite (FeAsS) has been investigated as an attempt to gain a better understanding of its dissolution chemistry. Rest potential measurements, cyclic voltammetry and constant potential experiments were conducted in the pH range from 8 to 12 in the absence and the in the presence of cyanide. A two-step reaction sequence is suggested by the electrochemical measurements. The initial step is described by: [FeAsS+6H20=Fe(OH)3+H2AsO3- +S°+7H++6e] The second step involves the oxidation of the arsenite and sulfur according to the following reactions: [H2As03-+H20=HAsO24-+3H++2e and S° +4 H2O=SO4-+3H++6e] Stoichiometric determinations confirm that 14 electrons are involved in the overall reaction.

Compacted, fine-grained soils, often referred to collectively as clays, are used as permeability barriers in many mineral engineering projects such as heap leaching, containment ponds, tailings disposal and earth dams. Source materials for these liners include a variety of sand, silt and clay admixtures. These exhibit dramatically different engineering properties when densified. Therefore, it is imperative to adequately assess and characterize any soils being considered for compacted liners. The permeability and plastic properties of fine-grained soils are reviewed with respect to the state of compaction as the water content varies. Because they are weak in tension, compacted clays are susceptible to cracking when subjected to differential flexural movements. Designs of compacted clay liners also must include an evaluation of their flexibility. That is the ability of a fine-grain soil to bend plastically without cracking. This paper will also discuss the importance of flexibility with respect to soil types, compaction effort, failure mechanism and testing evaluation to the performance of clay liners in preventing seepage of pollutants from a containment site.

Flotation circuits of a range of complexity are in use for a large number of ores. Since each ore is different and end-product quality requirements are not necessarily the same, circuit configurations of varying complexity are designed. How- ever, certain basic types of circuit configurations can be identified based upon the flotation behavior of the ores. These basic types can be combined to develop the specific f lowsheet configurations for a given ore. This chapter begins with a brief discussion of basic flowsheet configurations. Examples of the flowsheet configurations for a number of specific ores bearing different minerals are then described.

Gold leaching of an auriferous pyrite ore from the Portovelo deposit in Ecuador indicates that noncyanide leaching systems, such as thiocyanate and thiourea, are not as effective as the traditional cyanide system. For example, whereas approximately 95% of the gold can be leached from the ore with cyanide, only about 50% gold dissolution can be achieved with a thiocyanate leaching system. Electrochemical measurements indicate that gold is not cathodically protected by pyrite in these systems. Based on the results of preliminary diagnostic experiments, it appears that gold dissolution in thiocyanate and thiourea systems is limited by passivation due to the formation of either elemental sulfur or sulfur compounds on the gold surface.

During development mining, ventilation capacity may decrease and the ventilation requirements may depart from initially planned values depending on the mining rate, increases in the methane emission rate, and changes in ventilation airway leakages. Insufficient ventilation air quantities and the occurrences of high methane liberation rates can overwhelm the existing quantity of ventilation air and result in elevated levels of methane gas during development mining. This condition can both limit the development of that section and increase the risk for an ignition that may lead to an explosion. Thus, the prediction of ventilation air requirements prior to mining can enhance worker safety by reducing the likelihood that explosive methane-air mixtures form. This study presents an approach for prediction of methane inflow rates using coalbed methane reservoir modeling. For this purpose, a two-phase coalbed reservoir model of a three-entry type roadway is developed. In the model, grids are dynamically controlled to simulate development of entries. Examples are given for methane inflow and ventilation air requirements as a function of mining rate, development section length, mining height, and the existence of degasification boreholes. This technology can be used to limit the methane concentrations occurring as a result of the influences of various coalbed and operational parameters.

With more stringent environmental and economic constraints being placed on mining operations, it has become necessary to optimize each process to minimize energy and raw material consumption and reduce waste discharge. In most cases, detailed process analysis is required to detect inefficiencies and provide alternative solutions for process improvement. HETSIM, a microcomputer process modeling and simulation system, is routinely used to analyze communition, hydrometallurgical, pyrometallurgical, and coal preparation processes. The process modeling techniques used in METSIM, including process control simulation, will be presented and illustrated using actual plant processes.

The Spent Fuel Test-Climax (SFT-C) was con- ducted to evaluate the feasibility of retrievable deep geologic storage of commercially generated spent nuclear-reactor fuel assemblies. One of the primary aspects of the test was to measure the thermomechanical response of the rock mass to the extensive heating of a large volume of rock. Instrumentation was emplaced to measure stress changes, relative motion of the rock mass, and tunnel closures during three year of heating from thermally decaying heat sources, followed by a six month cooldown period. The calculations reported here were performed using the best available input parameters, thermal and mechanical properties, and power levels which were directly measured or inferred from measurements made during the test. This report documents the results of these calculations and compares the results with selected measurements made during heating and cooling of the SFT-C.

Strontium occurs commonly in nature, averaging 0.034% of all igneous rock; however, only two minerals, celestite and strontianite, contain strontium in sufficient quantities to make its recovery practical, and these minerals are found in sedimentary rocks. Of the two, only celestite has been found to occur in deposits of sufficient size to make development of mining facilities currently attractive. Celestite, the most common strontium mineral, consists primarily of strontium sulfate (SrSO,). Strontianite, the second most common mineral, consists primarily of strontium carbonate (Sr CO3). Strontianite would be the more useful of the two common minerals because strontium is used most commonly in the carbonate form, but few deposits have been discovered that are suitable for development. The physical properties of strontium ores are listed in [Table 1].

This report describes a smoke particle detector which utilizes a novel three electrode configuration and 5.0 [] source of Americium 241. The detector operates on the principle of diffusional charging by a region of unipolar molecular ions. The detector is sensitive to particle concentrations in the range of 10 to 5 20 ug/m3. The detector is intended for use primarily as an early warning fire detector but has the potential for other applications of particulate monitoring. In particular, this report adresses the potential use of the detector for monitoring diesel particulate matter (DPM). To assess the viability of this application, particle size data obtained from in-mine sampling of both DPM and dust were used to derive detector sensitivity functions for DPM and dust as a function of their mass concentrations only. These sensitivity functions are dependent upon the average diameters and size distributions of the DPM and dust. Using the derived sensitivity function for DPM, experiments were conducted in a ventilated tunnel where the true DPM mass concentrations, measured using a Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) were compared to the mass concentrations calculated using the detector sensitivity function. The agreement between the two measurements was good, indicating that with additional experiments, coupled with in-mine evaluation of the detector, refinement of the device for use as a continuous monitor for DPM appears feasible.

For centuries Thailand has been a significant, though primarily unofficial, producer of gold. Panning has been the traditional way of making a living for innumerable villagers during the December to May dry season following the harvest. During this period groups can be seen working the streams, rivers, fields and dry valleys at as many as 90 localities in 28 provinces. Attesting to their efforts are the five and a half ton solid gold Buddha at Wat Trimit and much of the gold jewelry sold in Bangkok. This traditional panning will continue, and probably become more extensive, in harmony with commercial endeavors using modern technology suitable for extraction of gold from types of deposits for which gravity separation would give very low recoveries. Several such deposits have been discovered in the course of geochemical and geological surveys conducted by the Royal Thai Department of Mineral Resources with the object of contributing to early interpretation of the results of a country-wide airborne survey.
