Accurate evaluation of stress and geological conditions is critical to ground control design in underground openings. For a slope entry, the problem is more difficult, because a slope will transverse through many types of strata. Over the last few years, Keystone Mining Services LLC, an affiliate company of the Jennmar Corporation, has developed a new methodology designated the “Stress, geologic and support design system (SGS).” The method analyzes the stress, geology and support design for a mine slope. The method has been successfully applied in various new slopes across the United States, and ground control plans developed using SGS methodology has helped coal companies successfully pass review and/or hearings by state and federal regulatory agencies. With a case application in the U.S. Midwest, this paper details and demonstrates the main concepts of the methodology, including (1) analysis of stress and geology and identification of strong, fair and weak zones along the slope; (2) primary and supplemental support design; (3) long-term support design in the form of steel square sets or arches and (4) validation of the support design utilizing advanced finite element computer modeling.

The objective of this study is to assess the impact of different reagents, such as limestone, lime, magnesium oxide, and sodium hydroxide, in experiments carried out in the single purification step and in two consecutive purification steps by raising the pH of a rare earth sulfuric liquor with the aim to remove or reduce the impurity concentrations in the rare earth sulfuric liquor. The choice for the best purification condition was made based on the minimum loss of rare earth elements (REEs), reagent consumption, and residue generation. The exploratory experiments show that it takes place in the two consecutive purification steps, the first one consists in dosing the limestone pulp until it reaches a pH of 3.5 followed by an addition of a lime pulp reaching a pH of 5.0. Under this condition, the results were a total removal of Fe3+, PO4 3− , and Th4+ ions and a reduction of 99%, 87%, and 37% w/w in the Al3+, UO2 2+, and SO4 2− concentrations, respectively, in the purified rare earth liquor. Furthermore, the lowest REE losses (8.3% w/w) and reagent consumption (4.3 kg/m3 ) and also a low residue generation (7.5 kg/m3 ) were observed in this condition. Despite reaching similar results regarding impurity removal, the experiments done with the addition of limestone, lime, magnesium oxide pulps, and sodium hydroxide solution in the single purification step, where the pH was raised to 5.0, presented higher REE losses (64.9%, 42.5%, 44.8%, and 60.9% w/w, respectively) and a higher residue generation (43.2, 25.1, 11.1, and 13.6 kg/m3 , respectively). This occurred due to the co-precipitation of salts containing rare earth elements in their composition. The experiments conducted with limestone, lime, and MgO resulted in a higher consumption of reagents, while the same result was observed when NaOH was used (4.3 kg/m3 ). In the experiments carried out with the addition of magnesium oxide and sodium hydroxide, the respective purified rare earth liquors presented a high concentration of magnesium, sulfate, or sodium, which could impact the quality of the marketable rare earth salts, whereas the salts obtained under the best condition observed in this study seem to be amenable for use as raw material in an attempt to obtain rare earth products with an acceptable chemical quality.

In 1984 a high temperature heat recuperation system was installed in the pellet plant of the National Steel Pellet Company located in Keewatin, Minnesota. The system is similar to those of Cleveland Cliffs Empire and U.S. Steel's Minntac operations. It recovers hot process air from the cooler by induced flow, and directs it to an intermediate zone between the drying and preheat zones on the grate machine. This system recently underwent further modifications in April 1985, following initial operation in 1984. The M. A. Hanna Company, which manages the property, developed the design criteria and made the subsequent recommendations for modification through its research facility in Nashwauk, Minnesota.

The Delaware County Regional Water Quality Control Authority (DELCORA) will be adding tunnel infrastructure to its wastewater conveyance system. This program involves the construction of a conveyance/storage tunnel and related facilities. The proposed 12- foot to 14-foot (±) finished diameter, TBM mined deep rock tunnel spans over 8.5 miles and lies approximately 80 ft-120 ft below the surface. The system is connected to the surface by at least five vertical online shafts and one offline shaft with associated 800ft long adit. This paper provides project details including data on the geologic conditions in which the tunnel will be constructed.

The North Singhbhum Mobile Belt (NSMB) lies between two crustal-scale shear zones, the South Purulia Shear Zone (SPSZ) at the north, and the Singhbhum Shear Zone (SSZ) at the south. The Babaikundi-Birgaon Axis (BBA) is an east-west trending secondary shear zone in the NSMB lying south of SPSZ, which is known for the occurrence of gold along with other sulfide minerals within the quartz reefs. The present study has been carried out at north of Ichadih village, which lies on the BBA. The present study attempts combined electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and self-potential methods along a profile of 470-m length in the Ichadih area to map the potential mineralized zones. Initially, ERT sections generated by Wenner, Wenner- Schlumberger, dipole-dipole, and joint inversion of the combined array have been analyzed, and results are validated through the analysis of model resolution. A prominent low resistivity (10–100 Ωm) associated with quartz reef/limonitic quartz reef at a depth of approximately 30–85 m, encircled by a high resistive (more than 10,000 Ωm) formation associated with metasedimentary rock, has been delineated using joint inversion of the combined array. Further, analysis of self-potential (SP) anomaly using particle swarm optimization inversion also confirms the prominent low SP anomaly at a depth of 77.3 m, which is analogous to the low resistivity anomaly identified in the joint inversion of the combined geo-electric array. Subsequent analysis of a complex synthetic geo-electrical model analogous to the present field situation proves the efficacy of the joint inversion of combined arrays. As a whole, joint inversion of multi-array data is established as an efficient technique for better subsurface imaging in case of the complex subsurface structure. In-depth analyses confirm the possibility of sulfide mineral-rich deposit (quartz reef/limonitic quartz reef) which requires further geological drilling and lithogeochemical sample analysis, for possible future exploration.

The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Fimiston Open Pit is mining through a dense network of disused level workings and stopes of varied sizes and orientations. This study investigated the interaction between underground workings and the pit slope stability, in particular for the ultimate pit depth of over 600 metres. Parametric analyses were conducted on the structural and rock mass properties in order to provide realistic input. Several cases in both 2D and pseudo 3D using UDEC were modeled and analyzed to investigate the performance of the rock mass at various mining stages. The concept of equivalent property factor was also introduced to model the 3D behavior using 2D models. Based on the modelling results, the possible failure mechanisms and deformation of the pit walls were assessed. Factors of safety have been derived for the pit slope at different mining stages using the strength reduction technique. The modelling results agree well with pit performance monitoring results to date. The concept and results presented in this paper could be a useful reference for operations with similar circumstances and stress regimes.

This study reports preliminary feasibility investigations for utilization of the selective carbothermic reduction and smelting (SCRS) processing scheme to beneficiate low-grade iron-manganese (Fe-Mn) mineral deposits from MN, USA. The study includes laboratory-scale demonstrations using an induction furnace and production of various products by manipulation of operational parameters. The products include alternative iron (Alt Fe), high carbon ferromanganese (HC FeMn), alternative silicomanganese (Alt SiMn), and upgraded manganese concentrate (Mn conc). All of these products have commercial value and can be used in various applications as raw materials.

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) has been in focus for the last few decades and is currently the most preferred excavation method for metro, hydro and irrigation tunnels. Tunnelling in hard and abrasive rock conditions, in particular, is adversely affected by a very low advance rate coupled with increased TBM disc cutter failures and cutterhead jamming, seeking an in-depth understanding of the design and operational processes of the boring components of the TBM. The cutterhead and disc cutter are the critical boring components of the machine, influencing the boring process significantly. These components directly interact with the rock and hugely influence the machine’s efficiency. This paper encapsulates a review of prior studies related to disc cutter design and the cutterhead design for hard rock TBM tunnelling. A design methodology for designing and selecting a disc cutter and a cutterhead is suggested. The design methodology has been applied for a hard rock tunnelling case, and suitable design specifications for the boring components were arrived at. The disc cutter and cutterhead specifications designed based on the suggested methodology closely match with that of deployed TBM specifications. It may be observed that except for the case of high-strength and high-abrasive rock (greyish quartzite), for the rest of the rocks, the suggested design can meet the desired advance rates.

The western industrial world has to rely more and more on complex polymetallic sulphide ores as sources for base metals. These ores are composed of fine grained sulphide minerals such as chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and marcasite. The liberation sizes of the individual minerals can range between 30 um and 5 um. Therefore, applying conventional techniques to recover these finely disseminated minerals usually results in unsatisfactory metallurgical performances with high losses of the valuable mineral to the slime , fraction of the tailing. New concepts for treating these polymetallic complex ores are discussed in this paper. Beneficiation techniques utilizing new reagents and a new approach to pulp preparation are described. Some of these techniques were applied to ores from existing concentrators as well as to new ores. The results of these studies are discussed in the following sections.

Under its program of advancing minerals technology, the Federal Bureau of Mines has developed a laboratory apparatus for continuous separation of minerals according to their dielectric properties. The unit consists of a rotating wire grid drum electrode and a fixed curved wire screen electrode positioned 3 mm apart. By applying high voltage across the electrodes, which are immersed in a dielectric fluid medium, a high-gradient electric field is produced. The high-dielectric-constant minerals are attracted and conveyed through the separator by the rotating drum electrode, whereas the low-dielectric-constant minerals settle through the fixed electrode. In typical tests, a sample of Montana chromite ore containing 43 percent chromite was concentrated to 72 percent chromite with 90 percent recovery.

Underground longwall coal mining sections are operated as sealed gobs if the coal is prone to spontaneous combustion. Sealing along the gate roads during longwall face retreat limits the flow of fresh air (oxygen) into the gob and, thus, deprives the spontaneous combustion reaction of oxygen. In a project sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have used computational fluid dynamics modeling to simulate the flow of gases in sealed longwall gobs. The models were validated using measurements and observations from the field and demonstrate that targeted injection of nitrogen along the gate roads inby the face can be used to control the size and location of explosive methane clouds within the gob and to minimize or eliminate the explosion hazard resulting from the formation of flammable methane-air mixtures.

It scarcely 1s possible to read a new issue of any of the principal mining trade journals without noting some mention of a major new overseas mining venture with which one or more domestic companies are involved. These projects seem to follow a fairly consistant pattern; most are large open pit mines, with relatively low grade ore bodies but huge reserves; the total price tag will be in nine significant figures and around half or more of the total cost will be for infrastructure. West1 noted that nearly $7 billion is being invested annually for new mining projects and the expansion of existing mining ventures, in the free world. He anticipates that by the year 1975 such investments would reach the $10-11 billion annual figure, and that in the five year period 1972-76 total capital requirements can be expected to aggregate around $45 billion. The proportion of this total investment which will be financed in some manner is difficult to estimate because of the variety of available financing arrangements. West estimated that around 75% of the total capital would come from internally generated funds, with the balance from external sources. Conceivably a substantially higher percentage could be attributable to external financing, especially it the trend of recent mineral development in Canada and Australia is any criterion, and of course, including local sales of equity as a part of the package.

The surface collapse and surrounding rock failure caused by goaf instability are the mining disasters that cannot be ignored. It is of great value to evaluate the stability of goaf accurately and treat it economically for the mine safety and the maintenance of ecological environment. However, in previous studies based on numerical simulation methods, the spatial complexity and the irregularity of actual goaf were not considered. Therefore, based on the internal space data of goaf obtained by high-precision laser detector, the goaf stability was comprehensively analyzed through Plaxis software and two-stage fuzzy judgment theory in this study. To effectively improve the goaf stability, the optimal backfill parameters for the goaf treatment were obtained by a series of mechanical tests. The research results provide some good references for the stability evaluation and the treatment of underground goaf.

The Bureau of Mines has been investigating several techniques, including the use of horizontal and vertical boreholes, to remove gas from coal in advance of mining. Horizontal boreholes drilled from underground workings as part of the mining cycle have been shown (Finfinger, 1980; Hagwood, 1983; Perry, 1978; Prosser, 1981; Thakur, 1980; VonSchonfeldt, 1982) to be very effective in providing short-term, immediate relief from high methane emissions. This technique has been widely accepted in the coal mining industry, but it does require close coordination to integrate the drilling and subsequent gas drainage and disposal into the projected mine development plan. Vertical boreholes can be placed several years in advance of mining to predrain gas from coalbeds over relatively large areas (Dunn, 1984; Elder, 1975; Lambert, 1980; Steidl, 1978; Stubbs, 1979). The vertical borehole technique has the additional advantage over horizontal boreholes of allowing work to be performed on the surface instead of in the more restrictive underground environment. However, except for the relatively large scale vertical borehole programs for both mine safety and commercial production in the Black Warrior Basin of Alabama (Dunn, 1984; Lambert, 1980; Stubbs, 1979), the technique has been underutilized. The primary reason for this seems to be a combination of the current economic climate in the coal industry, legal questions as to the ownership of coalbed gas, and potential roof damage from the stimulation treatments required to increase the characteristically low permeability of coalbeds to enhance gas production. The question of potential roof damage is the subject of this paper.

Part 2 of this article continues the discussion of a 10-year, multimillion dollar research and plant testing program on slurry rheology and grinding circuits. The first part of the article (ME, Dec. 1982) presented the basic concepts identified by the research and some laboratory test results. This section Illustrates typical Industrial scale test results and Identifies some industrial operating implications of controlling rheology by different methods. At least four controllable factors decide the rheological character of a slurry-slurry density or percent solids, particle size distribution, chemical environment, and slurry temperature. The second factor has two interrelated facets: the shape of the particle size distribution which controls packing behavior of the solids, and the fineness of the distribution. Finer particles increase interparticle forces and viscosity. As indicated in Part 1, during a given grinding test it is possible for all four factors to change. However, regardless of the particular settings of the four factors in a given test, if the resulting rheological character is either dilatant, pseudoplastic, or pseudoplastic with yield, the associated breakage rate is correlated with the current rheological character. It is obvious, for example, in batch grinding tests run at constant percent solids, that the second and third factors, where appropriate, are changing during grinding because size distributions are changing and the production of fresh surface area takes up unadsorbed chemical. Thus the corresponding rheological character change in batch tests with increasing grind time would be dilatant to pseudoplastic to pseudoplastic with yield. The degree to which this transformation occurs depends on the changing setting of the four factors over grinding time. In continuous grinding tests, one might logically expect that dramatic changes in any one of the four factors will be less likely to occur. It will be shown that continuous mill operations offer some unique opportunities to take advantage of possible rheological transformation by more direct operational control of the settings for the four factors. One extra observation noted in the rheological studies was the variability in the location and extent of region B (pseudoplastic behavior) for the various coals and ores tested. The location of region B was usually in the region of 45-55% solids by volume and was of the extent of 0-8%, or 2-11% with chemical addition. The corresponding increase in net production ranged from 0-10% in region B and 0-21% in region B&apos;. When region B is small or zero (no pseudoplastic character is exhibited) no increase in production will be observed and the use of chemicals is often marginal. There are several reasons for some materials exhibiting this quick transformation from dilatancy to high yield values often at surprisingly low percent solids by volume such as 30%. One condition identified was for materials containing high levels of viscosity-producing elements such as- carbonates or clays. A second condition documented was for materials that exhibited unusually fine primary fragment distributions (fine B1,; curves). This corresponds to materials having small y values of < 0.5. Such a slurry developed a yield value quickly during grinding because of the rapid buildup of fines. A related problem can be presented by materials exhibiting excessively coarse primary fragment distributions, y values > 0.9. Breakage of this type of material produces size distributions that give poor packing efficiencies even at long grind times, thus hindering the normal rheological transformation presented earlier. A final condition that can cause the occurrance of region B to be small or zero is when the media void volume filling of slurry is < 100%. Figures 5a and 5b use previously published data of this study to demonstrate the influence of solids loading and weight percent solids on the net production of taconite ore in a laboratory batch ball mill. In particular, Fig. 5a illustrates several trends not generally recognized until this study. They include these two: • Increased slurry density allows for increased solids loading before passing through the maximum in the net production curve where the fall-off is due to non first order breakage. • The use of rheology control chemicals such as GA-4272 allows this trend to be extended to higher slurry loadings with an increase in net production over any previous condition by keeping grinding first order. Figure 5b shows the same data as Fig. 5a plotted for constant weight loadings. These various figures of net production versus percent solids show the location and extent of the regions A, B, and C presented in Part 1 as a function of solids loading. Owing to the selective oxidation and uneven combustion that occur on the surface of carbon anode, some carbon particles detach and form carbon residue, which is defined as spent anode slag (SAS). The highly graphitized and toxic impurities such as fluorite ( CaF2), corundum (α-Al2O3), and cryolite ( NaAl11O17) are crucial components of SAS resource but are difficult to separate from graphite. This study developed a method of using water-soluble (emulsified) kerosene to separate the carbon particles from the toxic impurities in the SAS resource. The flotation purification approach of utilizing conventional kerosene was experimentally investigated and compared with that of using water-soluble kerosene. The results showed that with the use of emulsified kerosene, the maximum combustible matter recovery of the carbon particles was 89.86% while that of using traditional kerosene was 80.30%. The emulsified kerosene was comprehensively examined by various instruments to clarify its adsorption mechanism on the carbon particle surfaces. Because of the superior dispersibility of emulsified kerosene, it effectively envelops carbon particles with a smooth surface, oxygen-containing functional groups, and hydrophilic C–F bonds, thereby increasing the surface hydrophobicity and flotation responses of targeted carbon particles.

"Mining operations can create a negative environmental impact, especially when considering the tailings that are produced through the processing of ores. Tailings are finely grained residues that form sludges. The tailings are deposited into giant basins, or sludge ponds, where they create a burden on the environmentby limiting the use of processed water.Tailings are one of the most important environmental liabilities for mining operations because of their large proportion in relation to the ore mined — generally 90 to 98 percent. To get to the valuable minerals, mining companies must move large amounts of rock. The rock is ground and then treated, usually with the addition of chemical solutions and large amounts of water. The lower the concentration of the valuable resources, the greater the proportion of accumulated excavated material sludge.Sustainable tailings management requires responsible handling, making it one of the mining industry’s greatest challenges. The proper technology should include consistent control of the environmental risks and impacts, as well as a proper relationship with the communities that surround the mining operations.The tailings, which can remain partly contaminated with chemicals, are pumped into the large sludge basins, which are secured by earthworks. During the mining operations, the basins must be stable enough to withstand the pressure of the stored excavated material. The storage option is still used, but it has failed on occasion. And when it does, it increases the risks to the environment and binds the unused process water. The more complex the availability of fresh water required for industrial use and for human consumption and their economic activities — for example, farming and agriculture — the more complex the conflicts that have the potential to shut down mining operations. With modern separation technology solutions, it’s possible to process the sludge and recover the processed water. However, the responsible use of the water is critical. Therefore, mining companies must rely on technologies that allow for proper reclamation of the water, whether re-using in their own processes or treating it to return it to the environment."

Freely accessible and non-confidential real-life geological data sets from mineral deposits are desirable for the wide range of applications in research and education. However, publicly available statistical data are limited in their number and quality—they contain reduced information about geological, geophysical, geotechnical, chemical, mineralogical, and other relevant properties of deposits. This makes such data insufficient for scientific purposes. However, the amount of geological knowledge obtained for a variety of deposits in the past allows the construction of an idealized synthetic ore body model using analytical approach. Such a model could be used for education purposes and testing basic scientific theories, e.g., visualization of deposit structure; teaching sampling strategies; testing new algorithms for mine planning; or comparing geostatistical modeling methods. This paper presents an analytical approach to simulate volcanic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits and shows how synthetic deposit model can be constructed and further used for studying sampling with drilling and simulating folding and faulting.

Comingling filtered tailings and waste rock in a tailingsdominated mixture is a mine waste management strategy that has the potential to create geotechnically and geochemically stable landforms. Potentially acid-generating (PAG) waste rock can be sequestered within a filtered tailings matrix to enhance water retention and decrease hydraulic conductivity relative to a waste rock pile, potentially minimizing acid rock drainage (ARD). Enhanced water retention can reduce oxygen ingress limiting oxidation and resultant acid generation. Reduced hydraulic conductivity can slow inward percolation and outward drainage. In dry climates, the tailings matrix can hold precipitation near the ground surface accessible to evaporation and transpiration, thereby decreasing percolation. This paper presents an evaluation of comingled filtered tailings and waste rock in a tailings-dominated mixture (termed GeoWaste herein) and illustrates that ARD can be reduced under field conditions in a subtropical–highland climate.
