The Tayoltita Unit of Minas de San Luis, S. A. is situated in an isolated corner of the state of Durango, Mexico. The ore deposits in the region were first worked by Indians, but by 1757 the Spaniards had discovered them, and the first systematic exploitation of the mines commenced. By the early 1900's most of the mines had been acquired by American interests, and the San Luis Mining Company was organized. The modern period of exploitation, uninterrupted for the last 74 years, began. In 1962 the company was fully "Mexicenized" in compliance with the modification of the mining law, and the name was changed to Minas de San Luis, S. A. Tayoltita continues as one of Mexico's most important silver and gold mines. The ore is extracted in en extensive underground operation, mining epithermal fissure veins by selective methods. The ore is milled and treated in an efficient counter-current cyanide plant, where 95 % of the silver and 96 % of the gold is recovered. Current annual bullion output is 55,000 kg (1.7 million troy oz) of silver and 1000 kg (31,000 troy oz) of gold from milling 165,000 try (181,900 stpy). Rough, 33-kg (1000-troy oz) bullion bars are smelted at the mine, shipped by air to Mazatlan, Sinaloa, and are thence sold to the Met- Mex Peñoles smelter in Torreon, Coahuila. Ore reserves, blocked by very conservative methods, are currently at 540,000 tons (595,000 st). Ore reserve grade is 425 g of silver and 6 g of gold per ton (12.4 troy oz Ag and 0.18 troy oz Au per st).

As the mining industry continues to hire young professionals to supplant the growing number of retirees, a well-developed engineering curriculum, coupled with practical, real-world training, can prepare mining engineering graduates to make meaningful contributions in the industry. Successful companies can be measured not only by their reserve base and annual production but also by their retention of mining engineering graduates with zero to five years of operational experience. My personal experience in the industry during the last five years has been varied and rewarding. The knowledge and experience I have gained have taught me valuable lessons that prepared me for my current role.

Cyanide is a toxic species that is found predominantly in industrial effluents generated by metallurgical operations. Cyanide's strong affinity for metals makes it favorable as an agent for metal finishing and treatment and as a lixivant for metal leaching, particularly gold. These technologies are environmentally sound but require safeguards to prevent accidental spills. Various methods of cyanide remediation by separation and oxidation, including photolytic advanced-oxidation processes, are therefore reviewed. Reaction mechanisms are presented throughout the paper. The methods are compared in regards to their effectiveness in treating various cyanide species: free cyanide, thiocyanate, weak-acid dissociables, and strong-acid dissociables.

The Robinson Mining District near Ely, Nevada, is one of the major porphyry copper districts in the world. Within the district is an east-trending zone of altered porphyry, metamorphosed sedimentary rocks, and sulphide mineralization surrounded by Paleozoic limestone, dolomite, shale and sandstone, Tertiary volcanics, and Quaternary alluvium. Six major disseminated ore deposits have been exploited in this eight-mile zone. About 20% of the district production has come from disseminated ore in metamorphosed sedimentary rocks found adjacent to altered quartz-monzonite porphyry. The following brief statements summarize the inter-relationship of porphyry, alteration, metamorphism, and mineralization: 1. Disseminated copper ore does not occur in unaltered porphyry or in unmetamorphosed sedimentary rocks 2. Sedimentary rocks have been only weakly metamorphosed where intruded, by unaltered porphyry. 3. Intensely metamorphosed sedimentary rocks are found only adjacent to, altered porphyry. 4. Many hydrothermal minerals are common to both altered porphyry and adjacent metamorphosed sediments. 5. Disseminated ore is found in altered porphyry and adjacent meta¬morphosed sedimentary rocks. 6. In general, there is a direct correlation between grade of ore in porphyry and copper content in the adjacent rocks. 7. INTRODUCTION The Bunker Hill mine, located at Kellogg, ID, in the Coeur d'Alene mining district, has been a major pro¬ducer of lead-zinc-silver ore since 1887. Since its dis¬covery, it has produced over 25 401 171 t (28 million st) of ore from 20 to 25 veins and ore zones. The mine now covers an area of approximately 1.609 km (1 mile) in length and 0.8 km (1/2 mile) in width and extends from 1097 m (3600 ft) above sea level to 488 m (1600 ft) below sea level. Production is presently at a rate of 1542 t/d (1700 stpd). During 1965, a new stoping method, the Bunker Hill pillar system, was developed to enable the profitable mining of large, low-grade zinc ore bodies. The system was specifically designed to in¬corporate the Atlas Copco T26GH rubber-tired loaders. High productivities were achieved, and the method was adapted for mining the higher grade stopes where large timber square sets are utilized. This results in nearly 100% extraction. GEOLOGY The area encompassing the Bunker Hill mine lies immediately south of the Osburn fault, a major east-west striking, deep-seated strike slip fault which is the dominant structural feature in the Coeur d'Alene district. The Bunker Hill forms a series of veins and mineralized zones which occur as link structures, tension fractures, and breccia zones in folded, interbedded argillaceous quartzites of the Revett and St. Regis formations of the Precambrian belt series. The Rosco ore body is predominantly a zinc ore body above the Cate fault, which is presently known to occur from the 13 level. [elevation 488 m (1600 ft)] to the 1600 level [elevation 304 m (1000 ft) ]. These ore bodies are stringer zones with at least one dominant 1.8 to 4.5 m (6 to 15 ft) wide band of ore. They dip 0.09 to 0.26 rad (5° to 15°) steeper than the local 0.61 rad (35°) dip of the Cate fault, and also deviate 0.26 to 0.52 rad (15° to 30°) in strike from the Cate. Because of the flat dip and fractured weak hanging wall, normal cut-and-fill mining has not proven practical in this ore body. The mechanized timber methods described in the next section and the Bunker Hill pillar system are the mining methods successfully used. Completion of the Hall Street Coal Transfer Terminal in St. Louis marks the beginning of a major shift in the movement of coal to the power generating stations of the Midwest and South Central regions of the United States. The location of the terminal is significant. The 10 million ton- per-year facility is the first high capacity rail-to-barge transfer terminal to be built on the western shore of the Mississippi. This terminal and others to follow will link the massive coal fields of the West with the high coal consuming markets adjacent to the 25,000-mile Inland Waterway System.

The rational and optimal determination of the design of a mining exploitation is a very intricate and difficult problem : the parameters are numerous, some technical, some economic or technico-economic which cannot be fully controlled; beside, deposits are estimated from very limited information and the choice criteria are not always quantitative, the economic context has to be anticipated by several years, and even the technological limits can change tomorrow. So, although very clever and performing numerical algorithms have been developed in recent years for open-pit design, we consider that this problem has not really been solved satisfactorily until now. The reasons are that people have concentrated their efforts on informatical algorithmical problems, and have assumed that the technical and economical data are well defined at the time of the study, which is generally not true. In particular, the mere fact of assigning dollar- values to blocks in order to maximize the total cash-flow is generally unrealistic because of the uncertainty of the data used. Consequently, the significance of the unique pit obtained as a result of these algorithms is questionable.

The USSR, over the last 20 years, has continued to increase its out-put year by year and it is now almost four times what it was at the end of the Second World War. In 1975, it exceeded 700 million tons of run-oi-mine coal (all ranks) which amounts to over 20 percent of world output. This rapid progress has been due to modernization of the industry, by means of increased mechanization and automation and the development of new machines and systems for underground workings and by the expansion of open-pit workings and the development and implementation of larger earthmoving machines.

Recently, noequilbrium electrokinetic measurements using laser-Doppler electrophoresis were reported by Miller et al. (1992) for alkali halides and the sign of their surface charge thus determined. These results are generally as expected from simplified lattice ion hydration theory with KCI, under normal circumstances, being the most significant exception. In this regard, lattice defects (F centers and oxygen imperfections) have been found to influence the surface charge of KCI and its electrophoretic mobility. In particular, the presence of oxygen defect states in the crystal lattice has been found to be responsible for KCI's unexpected behavior. The concentration of oxygen defect states in KCI, as characterized by UV/Vis absorption, was varied in order to study their influence on the electrokinetic behavior and subsequently on the flotation response of KCl. At low oxygen contents « 60 ppm) KCI is positively charged as expected from lattice ion hydration theory. However, typically, KCI contains substantial oxygen (>300 ppm) sufficient to impart a negative surface charge which accounts for the selective flotation of KCI from NaCl by hetero-coagulation with oppositely charged alkyl amine hydrochloride collector colloids.

This paper presents the results of column flotation of a fine feed sample of Florida phosphate. A central composite design is used to study the main and interaction effects of parameters affecting column efficiency. The statistical design is also used to determine the optimum conditions. The results indicate that, depending on the experimental conditions, it is possible to achieve a concentrate of high grade and recovery. A concentration of 15 ppm of non-ionic frother is found to be enough to maximize the recovery at the pH of 9.5.

Lime and limestone-based SO2 scrubbing processes have demonstrated reasonably good success in removing low concentrations of SO2 from flue gases. While most of the operating problems experienced in the early days of scrubbing have been worked out, problems usually increase and removal efficiency drops with increased amounts of SO2 present in the gas stream. In order to overcome these difficulties, yet still taking advantage of lime and limestone as the lowest cost neutralizing agents, a host of so-called double- alkali systems were developed. These processes take advantage of cations such as Na+ and NH4+ capable of forming highly water soluble bases or basic salts, such as hydroxide, carbonate or sulfite, which having been neutralized or acidified by the absorbed SO2 can be regenerated with a lower cost base such as lime.

The agriculture industry has made great strides during the past decade to increase agriculture yields through increased use of fertilizers. Increased use of fertilizers may prevent or at least delay mass starvation due to the alarming increase in world population. Phosphate was added to soil as a plant nutrient in the forms of calcined bones at least 2 000 years ago, (1) and man has used phosphate minerals as a source of fertilizers in one form or another for at least 100 years. During 1977 the world produced about 116 million metric tons of phosphate rock, with about 86% used for fertilizers and another 4% for animal feed supplements. More than three-fourths of the total production comes from the United States, Morocco, and the Soviet Union. From a mineral beneficiation point of view, the major sources of phosphate rock and the methods of beneficiation can be classified as follows. Marine deposits not containing appreciable carbonate minerals, marine deposits requiring a francolite carbonate mineral separation, igneous deposits not containing appreciable carbonate minerals, and igneous deposits, requiring an apatite carbonate mineral separation.

Despite the seeming benefits decoupling pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals present in practice, little success has been achieved. The present study presents possible process routes for attaining selective flotation broadly capitalizing on differential oxidation between these minerals, and the use of a chelating collectors. The best performance was achieved with dithionocarbamate application following copper activation, yielding 81.4% arsenopyrite and 37% pyrite recovery. Preaeration followed by staged addition of xanthate produced 76% arsenopyrite and 31% pyrite recovery while reverse flotation of pyrite after H2O2 addition gave rise to rejection of 66% pyrite accompanied with 24% arsenopyrite.

Separation of dolomite from phosphate is the most challenging problem in phosphate mineral processing. Over 50% of the future phosphate reserve in Florida contains too much dolomite to process using the current industry practice. The current phosphoric acid production practice requires less than 1% MgO in the phosphate concentrate as the feed material. The Florida Industrial and Phosphate (FIPR) Institute has collaborated with worldwide experts in the field to address this issue. As a result, the industry is now offered three feasible options. Option 1 offers three methods for reducing MgO content in the concentrate from the Crago process, including adding a dolomite depressant in the rougher flotation step, dolomite flotation of the cleaner concentrate, and scrubbing the cleaner concentrate in quartz sand. These methods could reduce MgO content in the final concentrate by 20–40%. Option 2 involves crushing and grinding of high-dolomite phosphate pebbles followed by dolomite flotation at slightly acidic pH using a new collector that does not require phosphoric acid as a phosphate depressant, achieving a final concentrate analyzing less than 0.9% MgO at about 87% P2O5 recovery. Option 3 is a gravity separation technique using an innovative separation jig, and its full potential remains to be demonstrated.

The Bushveld Complex of South Africa contains almost 90% of the world’s reserves of platinum group minerals (PGMs). In the flotation of PGMs, there are significant challenges arising from the need to treat ever-decreasing grades of the relevant ore deposits. The major challenge in the flotation of these ore bodies is the control and management of the gangue minerals, particularly silicates such as orthopyroxene and plagioclase feldspar which are often rimmed with talc which makes them naturally floatable. It has been shown that various polysaccharide depressants such as CMC and guar have different properties in terms of depressing the gangue minerals. Since the PGMs are often associated with sulphides, copper sulphate is widely used as an activator in PGM flotation but can inadvertently activate the gangue minerals and reduce the recovery of PtTe2 which accounts for up to 40% of the Pt in the Platreef ore body. Depressants also reduce the mass of solids reporting to the froth and can thus destabilize the froth. This effect on the froth can be mitigated by using higher frother dosages or water of higher ionic strength. In summary due care needs to be taken to carry out site test work to develop an optimum ratio of collector, frother, activator and depressant to ensure that the highest grades and recoveries of the PGEs are obtained while reducing depressant dosage as much as possible. Chromite recoveries can be reduced through the application of gravity separation or reducing entrainment through reduced water recovery. INTRODUCTION The Bushveld Complex located in the north of South Africa contains the world’s largest deposit of Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) (1). The so-called upper Critical Zone of the Complex hosts the largest concentration of platinum group elements (PGEs) in the world. The Zone hosts the Upper Group Chromitite No.2 (UG2) reef and Merensky Reef as well as the Platreef mineralization of the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. The Merensky pegmatoid Zone contains the base metal sulphide grains and associated PGMs. Of particular importance to the topic of this paper is the occurrence in these reefs of various gangue minerals. The Merensky Reef consists predominantly of orthopyroxene (~60%), plagioclase feldspar (~20%), pyroxene (~15%), phlogopite (5%) and occasional olivine. Secondary minerals such as talc, serpentine, chlorite and magnetite have widespread occurrence. Of these, talc is the only mineral to show significant natural floatability (2,3). Although present in small amounts talc is closely associated with pyroxene and imparts significant floatablity to the high concentrations of pyroxene present in these ores (4). The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of pyrrohtite (~40%), pentlandite (~30%) and chalcopyrite (~15%). The major platinum group minerals are cooperite (PtS), braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS], sperrylite (PtAs2) and PGE alloys. The UG2 consists predominantly of chromite (between 60 – 90% by volume) with lesser silicate minerals (5 – 30% pyroxene and 1 – 10% plagioclase). Other minerals present in minor concentrations, can include silicates, oxides and base metal sulphides. Total PGE varies by locality but on average range between 4 and 7 g/t. The PGMs present in the UG2 Reef are highly variable, but generally the UG2 is characterised by PGE sulphides such as laurite (RuS2), cooperite (PtS) and braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS. The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite. The Platreef is located in the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. This reef consists of a complex assemblage of rock types, with pyroxenites, serpentinites and calc-silicates being the most abundant. Base metal mineralization and platinum group element (PGE) concentrations are found to be highly irregular, both in value as well as in distribution. The State of Minnesota is interested in stimulating the development of clay resources and recently supported a two year project to collect data on geological, mineralogical, processing, economic and environmental aspects of such potential developments. This paper presents the .various process options adopted on the bulk samples collected from the Minnesota River Valley area which is a primary deposit and contains a major silica fraction. A standard test flowsheet involving degritting, dispersion, HGMS, and cycloning was developed and for some samples yielded an acceptable filler grade product. Secondary streams containing relatively high grade kaolin but of coarse size were also obtained. Improvement in particle size distribution and in physical properties related to paper product specifications (brightness, viscosity) were obtained by size reduction processes. Market and economic considerations for kaolin consumption in the upper Midwest are analyzed. Current markets for paper grade kaolin in Minnesota were briefly discussed.

Business planning in the coal' industry revolves around the production and quality forecast. It is difficult to accurately estimate costs and revenues until the production forecast is made. At mines where production comes from multiple sections, quality is tied to each section's production. Blending becomes a part of the planning process. In order to respond to rapidly changing business climate, a reliable program is needed to accurately forecast the effects of changes in key parameters affecting the production. This paper discusses an efficient, intuitive, and economical approach to underground coal mine planning program which uses a PC-based relational database as the programming platform to forecast production and quality. The program was developed at a major coal company. The relational nature of the production planning data, the programming algorithm, and the underlying principles are discussed in this paper.

"The Bankei-Kitanosawa tunnel that is located in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan includes a 450m long section near the arrival point where mudstone which can liquate out natural hazardous materials such as arsenic and selenium exceeding the tolerance stipulated by country as well as weathered mudstone and unconsolidated sedimentary rocks with small overburden and the competence factor less than 1.0 are present. The mucks containing hazardous materials were disposed into the waterproof branch tunnels created from the inside of the main tunnel. The full face early ring closure method was employed to ensure the stability of the tunnel in the low strength rock masses having no stand-up time. As a result, the waterproof tunnels branching off the main tunnel can manage water tightness so as to ensure safety and relief against environmental risks of the hazardous materials. It is also demonstrated that the full face early ring closure method enable construction of the tunnel with a small overburden in the low strength rock masses. In order to overcome the restrictions, the hazardous materials were designed to be disposed into large cross section waterproof tunnels which were newly designed and constructed in high strength and hazardous material free Andesite. The lining for the tunnels was composed of with shotcrete. In addition, full face early ring closure (Sato et al., 2013) was employed to stabilize the tunnel so as to enable safe tunnel excavation in low strength rock masses where a ground arch is deemed unachievable. This paper presents the safe disposal method of mucks which are likely to liquate out natural hazardous materials as well as the full face early ring closure method and its mechanical characteristics."

While a body of work exists on intelligent systems for guiding occupants out of buildings during an emergency, the problem of guiding miners out of a mine during an underground emergency has not been explored. Underground evacuation fundamentally differs from building evacuation because of differences in the regulatory regime and uncertainty regarding the number of occupants. The potential for implementing an intelligent miner guidance system is buttressed by the fact that miner tracking systems, along with communication and sensor networks, already exist in underground mines. This work presents a method based on a local positioning system, in the form of a network of “nodes” at major “intersections,” which can then be used to guide miners to safety. We have developed a path-planning algorithm, based on Dijkstra’s algorithm and the local positioning system that can provide miners with the optimal escape path in an emergency. The algorithm is validated with scenarios at the Missouri University of Science & Technology Experimental Mine demonstrating the potential to include smart technology in mine emergency management and response planning. INTRODUCTION Underground mines are hazardous environments with a higher than usual risk of safety emergencies where miners have to evacuate the mine to save their lives. Mines have always trained miners to evacuate or shelter-in-place in minimum time. Jalali and Norrozi (2009) opined that the three major components that help miners in case of emergency are pre-planned optimal escape routes, decreasing delays, and improving the education of miners. In fact, Goodman and Kissel (1990) suggested that fatalities arising from mine accidents could be reduced by 50% just by decreasing delays in finding the pathways in case of emergency. The proposed work can assist miners in finding escapeways quickly in case of emergency. It is very important to have a pre-planned evacuation strategy that is clearly communicated to miners to ensure the safety of all (Conti, Chasko & Wiehagen, 2005).
