Utah Development Company (UDC) operates five large opencut coal mines in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland, Australia. In total, over 20 million tonnes of coking coal are exported annually from the five mines. Typically, the coal seams dip at 5 percent, are 2 to 10 metres thick, and sub-crop some 20 to 40 metres below surface. In the main, the operations are single seam, but multiseam (2, 3 or 4 seams) operations do exist and will form an increasing proportion of the mining activities as depths increase. Draglines are used as the major stripping equipment, highwall depths currently ranging from 20 to 65 metres. Whilst project feasibilities were based on stripping to a 60 metre highwall, it is now proposed to continue opencut mining to depths exceeding 100 metres. This will entail large quantities of prestripping (ahead of the draglines) and overcoming problems associated with steepening seam dips, including haulage of coal from the pits.

This paper examines the application of gelatin mixture models to the study of factors such as gravity effects, tectonic and residual stresses, anisotropy, physical nonlinearity, time-dependent behavior of the rock mass and connectedness of the geologic space. The calibration technique of gelatin mixtures, proposed by Richards and Mark in 1966, is applied to the particular problem considered. Similitude relationships between model and prototype are discussed with reference to the constitutive equations describing the physical behavior of the rock mass. The interaction between two openings in a linearly elastic medium, under conditions of plane strain, is used as an illustrative example, with the view of describing the history of stress and deformation changes on the rock medium and lining around a slusher drift while undercuts are made in block caving.

WHAT IS AI? It's very hard to say. Most researchers and practitioners disagree with nearly any attempted definition, but most would agree that A1 does deal with the development of computer-related methods o f problem-solving. Artificial intelligence is a discipline which seeks to emulate human anatomy and/or thought processes by applying computer science, electronics, and mechanical engineering to the development of natural language processing, machine vision, robotics, and knowledge-based expert systems. Integration of these four fields will someday produce the robots of today's science fiction. A1 addresses problems of structuring large amounts of knowledge and representing relationships with rules and semantic frameworks rather than with mathematical equations. A1 is convergent rather than divergent - - conventional conputer applications use relatively small quantities of input to generate large output, but A1 generally reduces large amounts of information to establish a few major conclusions. The development of A1 has prompted greatly increased efforts on the part of scientists and engineers to understand just how humans think, organize information, approach problem-solving, and form conclusions. Some of the more exciting and possibly far-reaching advances in A1 are coming in this more-or-less soft-science area. Thirty years of A1 research (dating from a 1956 conference at Dartmouth College at which the term A1 was coined) has already spawned many widespread, almost ordinary, products: window graphics, hand-held controllers (mouse). function menus, etc., all in an attempt to make computers and people more compatible. WHAT IS AN ES? A1 can be used to develop EXPERT SYSTEMS, which are computer programs or systems which contain knowledge and rules by which problems can be solved. or at least by which possible solutions can be suggested for very complex problems. A1 can be used to better define problems so that solutions can be found. An ES is designed not to process numbers, but to process information according to rules and logic derived from actual practice and experience. WHY AI? WHY ES? Companies are increasingly aware of the value of accumulated knowledge and experience in designing, building, operating, and maintaining the increasingly complex or expensive physical plants in any business. As knowledge branches out and becomes more specialized, the accumulated learning of a veteran operator or manager or engineer becomes a scarce resource well worth preserving. EXPERT SYSTEMS offer a means of doing that, reinforcing, not replacing, human capabilities.

Alternating current electrocoagulation (AC/EC) may be an alternative to chemical coagulation in the thickening of tailings in the mineral, coal and petroleum industries. In the current study, ground silica (d50 as received, 20 µm) served as the model tailings solid with characteristically poor settling behavior. Its natural initial settling rate was 1.6 x 10-3 cm/min. This paper discusses the indirect application of AC/EC via aluminum electrodes to the enhancement of the settling behavior of the silica. ?Indirect AC/EC? means that the silica was coagulated upon dispersion in water that had been treated by AC/EC. The effect of AC/EC retention time on settling behavior is examined and the water chemistry is analyzed. Test results show that the initial settling rate of silica was enhanced by a factor of 4,000 at its maximum of 6.4 cm/min, under the conditions employed. Settling enhancement was achieved upon contact between the AC/EC-treated water and the silica, and the enhanced initial settling rate was dictated by the floc size. The aluminum dosage increased with AC/EC retention time, reaching a maximum concentration that was equivalent to 13.1% of that predicted by Faraday?s law. Complex aluminum ions are considered to have adsorbed onto the silica surface and an adsorption mass ratio of 0.3 mg Al/g silica was the most effective in enhancing settling behavior. Owing to pH change or slow kinetics, aluminum hydroxide precipitation did not lower the ion product ([Al3+][OH-]3) below the KSP of 6.3 x 10-32.

Thermal damage is an urgent problem faced by deep mining. High-temperature rock mass, hot water and electromechanical equipment are the sources of the thermal damage. The increase in air temperature in mine tunnel is the result of fluid–solid coupling heat transfer from various heat sources. This paper takes a roadway with hot water and a mine car as the research object. Based on the Fluent, Static Structural and Steady-State Thermal modules in ANSYS, the thermal-fluid–structure coupling analysis in the roadway is carried out. It is found that the hot water has a significant effect on the thermal environment of the mine. Under the experimental parameters, the maximum heat flux density and equivalent elastic strain at the interface between the hot water and the rock are 9789.3 W/m2 and 0.00054532 m/m, respectively. The heat flux distribution in the rock area near the mine car does not change much, and the equivalent elastic strain value in this area is high. After the air is heated in the hot water area, the temperature curve changes gradually and then rises steadily. By changing the inlet air temperature parameter, it is found that the lower the inlet air temperature, the better the cooling effect, and the change of the inlet air temperature can change the air temperature field in the roadway as a whole. By changing the parameter of inlet air speed, it is found that higher wind speed brings better cooling effect, but with the increase in wind speed, the cooling effect of roadway thermal environment is very limited. When the wind speed increases from 5 m/s to 10 m/s, the air temperature of most measuring points drops by more than 2℃; when the wind speed increases from 15 m/s to 20 m/s, the air temperature of most measuring points drops below 0.7℃. After the wind speed reaches a certain value, the cooling effect of ventilation is very limited.

By utilizing collapsed gangue to create gob ribs, roof cutting and roadway maintenance (RCRM) technology enables coal pillar-free mining, presenting a novel approach. Due to their inherent structure, faults, which are common geological formations, can lead to various hazards, including fault sliding and significant deformation of roadways. In this study, a selfdesigned underground engineering simulation test device is utilized to imitate the cross-fault mining of the 11,101 working face in the Qipanjing Coal Mine (East). The objective is to examine the behavior of the surrounding rock and stress evolution. Generally, the experimental findings demonstrate that compared to the return air roadway, the RCRM roadway experiences a 3.3% decrease in maximum coal rib stress. This suggests that the implementation of this technique can effectively alleviate the stress on the surrounding rock of the roadway. The maximum coal rib stress, lateral pressure of the gob rib, and maximum deformation of the roof near the fault of the RCRM roadway are 11.3%, 25.6%, and 86.1% greater than those of the conventional geological conditions, respectively. The roadway deformation is negatively impacted by the fault structure. Based on experimental data and field measurements, a discrepancy in the maximum roof deformation between the test and field monitoring results under typical geological conditions is 8%. This indicates a favorable alignment between the test results and the real-life scenario. In conclusion, the proposed targeted control technique is implemented in the field by integrating the mining invariant equation and gangue volume expansion equation. This not only validates the effectiveness of the technology but also offers valuable insights for the future utilization of RCRM technology under comparable circumstances.

The projected depletion and the increasing costs of petroleum and natural gas along with the public and governmental resistance to nuclear energy have caused coal to emerge as one of today's answers to both our short term and long term energy needs in power generation. In order to satisfy this need, major increases in coal production are mandatory, thus requiring more and higher capacity coal transfer terminals. The logic for selecting coal as the major fuel for power generation is based on many different reports on the existing and potential energy sources, which include petroleum, natural gas, hydropower, solar, geothermal, and nuclear. Most of the reported coal spontaneous combustion events occur in surface and underground mines where low rank coals (i.e., subbituminous and lower for this particular studies) are extracted indicating their high propensities for spontaneous combustion. Low rank coals have high moisture content (15 to 45%) and are capable of absorbing more moisture in dried condition. However, it is hard to induce the initial stage of self-heating process for the low rank coal using the current laboratory R70 testing method — a method widely used in the coal industry. Like a sponge, dry low rank coals can absorb water vapor in the air while the heat contained in the moist air is transferred to coal and served as the required activation energy to initiate the coal self-heating process. In order to prove this theorem and quantify the effects, the R70 adiabatic oxidation testing method has been improved to introduce a controlled moist flow into the coal reaction vessel. Tests using the new method and its setup on low rank coals showed that the initial self-heating process of coal sample can be greatly accelerated by the added water vapor — impossible with the regular R70 method. Once the self-heating is sustained, the removal of air moisture can further accelerate the process.

That you are giving the Daniel C. Jackling award to me is a great personal honor. But more significantly, it is a recognition that geostatistics has come of age. And since I am considered by many as belonging to an older generation of geostatisticians, I thought that it would be fitting that I reflect on where geostatistics came from and where it might be going. First, though, let me propose a definition of geostatistics. Etymologically, paraphrasing Webster's definitions of "geo" and "statistics," it is "a branch of mathematics dealing with the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of masses of numerical data taken from the earth." This definition is most appropriate in the context of mining geostatistics. It includes both classical and spatial statistics. It emphasizes the earth aspect, or the analysis of geologic features. And it should remind the practitioner that geologic input is a critical part of all geostatistical applications. In the 1910s, statistical methods were already used to analyze geological data. However, the origin of geostatistics, as we know it today, is best set in the late 1940s, when H.S. Sichel recognized the lognormal distribution of sample values in the South African gold mines. In 1951, Daniel Krige observed that "it can be expected that the gold values in a whole mine will be subject to a larger relative variation than those in a portion of the mine." In other words, samples taken close to each other are more likely to have similar values than if taken farther apart. This observation is the foundation on which spatial statistics, which characterizes values defined in a multidimensional space, is built. However, the 1950s were marked by studies based on classical, as opposed to spatial, statistics. It was only in the 1960s that the need was recognized to model the similarity between sample values as a function of the distance between samples and that the semivariogram was defined. A theoretical framework was developed by Matheron that supplied an elegant mathematical explanation to the empirical observations made by Krige. Matheron coined the term "kriging" in recognition of Krige's pioneering work on the geostatistical evaluation of mineral deposits. As soon as this theoretical framework was developed, it was possible to bring geostatistics to the academic world. The "Centre de Geostatistiques" was founded in Fontainebleau. Numerous students were trained there, disciples eager not only to improve the theory and develop more sophisticated mathematical tools, but also to spread the new faith throughout the world. "Four main and three minor rare-earth-element (REE)-bearing minerals were identified and quantified in the Kiirunavaara apatite iron ore tailings using optical microscopy, an electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) and a mineral liberation analyzer, and their chemical compositions were analyzed by the EPMA and laser ablation inductively coupled plasmamass spectrometry. REEs are shown to be contained in the minerals apatite, monazite, allanite, titanite, zircon, thorite and synchysite. In zircon, thorite and synchysite, they occurred in only trace amounts and contributed limited amounts to the total REE budget, and these are consequently of minor importance. Monazite occurred as inclusions in apatite and as free particles, 90 percent liberated. Allanite occurred to some degree in mixed grains with magnetite but also as free particles. Monazite mainly reported to the apatite concentrate, while allanite and titanite largely went to the tailings, the latter preferably to those fractions smaller than 38 µm. The amount of titanite in the finest tailings fraction was 2.3 weight percent, containing close to 1 percent REEs, with heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) making up 28 percent of the total REEs. However, a texturally distinct group of titanite grains showed an HREE/REE ratio of up to 67 percent. Furthermore, titanum dioxide analyses indicate that titanite is preferentially released into the tailings from the secondary magnetic separation step in the concentrator. Our data therefore suggest that titanite, occasionally enriched in HREEs, can be extracted from the processing stream and might thus be considered a new source for REEs at Kiirunavaara and similar deposits.IntroductionDeposits of apatite iron ores are the major source for iron in the European Union and are exploited by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) in several mines in the Kiruna-Malmberget area in northern Sweden. Kiirunavaara is the largest of the apatite iron orebodies in Sweden, comprising more than 2 Gt of iron ore with 60 to 68 percent iron (Fe). At the end of 2015, the total accumulated production of crude ore from openpit and underground mining since the start of mining was 1,566 Mt, with ore reserves of 644 Mt grading 46.3 percent Fe (LKAB, 2016). The deposit defines a steeply dipping tabular body, approximately 6 km long and up to 180 m thick, extending at least 1,500 m below the surface. It is situated in the middle part of the Palaeoproterozoic Kiirunavaara Group of volcanic rocks and follows the contact between a thick pile of trachyandesitic lava and overlying pyroclastics (Martinsson, 2004)."

The long-term supply of nickel to society was assessed with theWORLD7 model for the global nickel cycle, using new estimates of nickel reserves and resources, indicating that the best estimate of the ultimately recoverable resources for nickel is in the range of 650–720 million ton. This is significantly larger than earlier estimates. The extractable amounts were stratified by extraction cost and ore grade in the model, making them extractable only after price increases and cost reductions. The model simulated extraction, supply, ore grades, and market prices. The assessment predicts future scarcity and supply problems after 2100 for nickel. The model reconstructs observed extraction, supply and market prices for the period 1850–2020, and is used to simulate development for the period 2020–2200. The quality of nickel ore has decreased significantly from 1850 to 2020 and will continue to do so in the future according to the simulated predictions from the WORLD7 model. For nickel, extraction rates are suggested to reach their maximum value in 2050, and that most primary nickel resources will have been exhausted by 2130. After 2100, the supply per capita for nickel will decline towards exhaustion if business-as-usual is continuing. This will be manifested as reduced supply and increased prices. The peak year can be delayed by a maximum of 100 years if recycling rates are improved significantly and long before scarcity is visible.

The effect of the technique is manifest by relative turbidity measurements between pregnant leach solution and raffinate, by changes in the character of the sludge accumulations, by alteration of the zeta potential of particulates, and by a general reduction in the mass of solids.

The Tunnel of Guillermo Gaviria Echeverri, spanning 6.05 miles, will be Latin America’s longest road tunnel, is currently under construction in Colombia’s Antioquia Department with a single bidirectional tube connected to a parallel rescue tube through multiple cross-passages. The study faces challenges in implementing the prescriptive semitransversal ventilation system due to design restrictions. Different ventilation concepts are eplored to nd the most suitable system for regular operation and re scenarios. A quantitative ris assessment evaluates each alternative system and identies the longitudinal ventilation system, accompanied by ris mitigation measures, as the safest choice, since it surpasses the prescribed semitransversal ventilation concept.

Federal regulations require that refuge alternatives (RAs) be located within 305 m (1,000 ft) of the working face and spaced at one-hour travel distances in the outby area in underground coal mines, in the event that miners cannot escape during a disaster. The Mine Safety and Health Administration mandates that RAs provide safe shelter and livable conditions for a minimum of 96 hours while maintaining the apparent temperature below 35 °C (95 °F). The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health used a validated thermal simulation model to examine the mechanisms of heat loss from an RA to the ambient mine and the effect of mine strata composition on the final internal dry bulb temperature (DBT) for a mobile tent-type RA. The results of these studies show that 51 percent of the heat loss from the RA to the ambient mine is due to radiation and 31 percent to conduction. Three mine width and height configurations and four mine strata compositions were examined. The final DBT inside the RA after 96 hours varied by less than 1 °C (1.8 °F) for the three mine width/height configurations and by less than 2 °C (3.6 °F) for the four mine strata compositions.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) has been shown to contribute to various adverse health effects on underground miners. In order to reduce worker exposures, it is critical to measure the levels of DPM in the active work settings and in real time. However, the 5040 method, developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), which quantifies the mass of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) in the samples, is based on full-shift samples, and can take days or even weeks for results. Use of real-time monitors could significantly reduce the risk of DPM exposure to miners, and available monitors have been shown to quantify DPM, mainly using the EC and other surrogates. The NIOSH Spokane Mining Research Division is conducting research aimed at developing a field-portable DPM monitor that is able to quantify both EC and OC. One part of this work is to understand the effect of OC on currently available real-time DPM monitors. This paper will present the results from experiments that were designed to observe the effect of OC on real time monitors and compare the results with the NIOSH 5040 method. BACKGROUND Diesel engines remain ubiquitous in mining environments and, as such, are one of the primary sources of ultrafine- and nano-aerosols in the mining environment in the form of diesel particulate matter (DPM). As a result of their small size, DPM has longer residence times in a mine atmosphere than the typically larger mechanically generated dust [1]. In addition, the small size enables DPM to penetrate deeply into the respiratory system [1], and exposure to DPM has been shown to contribute to various adverse health outcomes of the pulmonary system [2] and cardiovascular system [3]. Diesel exhaust has been classified as a carcinogen to humans (Group 1) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer [4]. Due to mounting concern about adverse health outcomes, extensive efforts are being made to reduce workers’ exposure to DPM, with the high exposures that often occur in underground mines being of particular concern [5]. New technologies are being developed to reduce engine emissions and thereby airborne DPM levels, including advanced engine technologies, a host of aftertreatment systems [6], and a variety of alternative fuels. The latter have been shown to markedly decrease respirable DPM and other hazardous components of diesel emissions from mining vehicles [7], yet high exposures persist, especially in underground mines [8]. In order to reduce worker exposures, it is critical to measure the levels of DPM in active work settings. In mine settings, exposures to DPM are measured by collecting air samples on filters (usually full-shift samples) and sending them to a lab for analysis using the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) P13 method, a variant of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 5040 method. The 5040 method is designed to quantify the mass of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) on the samples [9], which is then used to determine the concentration in the sampled air. MSHA has set a limit for exposure, which is based on the concentration of total carbon (TC), or the sum of both EC and OC. The allowable TC in the air (time-weighted average over the shift) is 160 μg/m3 of TC [10].

Productive and beneficial use of reclaimed surface-mined land is a concern of industry, government, and the general public. An investigation was conducted of current mined-land planning practices to aid in the development of a procedure for evaluating postmining land use potentials. This investigation considered both the industry and public planning approach to mined-land planning and was based primarily upon three case studies conducted in various regions of the United States. The site planning process that was developed during the investigation is iterative in nature and has been designed specifically for the mining industry. It centers around preliminary studies and data collection, development of land use alternatives, and the evaluation of alternatives. Use of this process facilitates the evaluation of economic, environ- mental, and social impacts of postmining land use alternatives. In this paper, the process is presented along with a description of its development, application, and significance.

Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate, has a history of usefulness to man dating back several thousand years, and a worldwide industry has been built on the mining and processing of this versatile industrial mineral. However, anhydrite, the other prin¬cipal calcium sulfate mineral, has very limited use, so much so that separate statistics for it are not always kept, but are usually included with those for gypsum. Although often found in close association, the two minerals have important chemical differences in that anhydrite is the anhy¬drous form of calcium sulfate (CaSO4) whereas gypsum is the dihydrate (CaSo4.2H20). These two molecules of combined water result in significant differences in hardness, density, and solubility of the two minerals. Of most importance, however, is the difference in thermal properties wherein gypsum, upon the application of a modest amount of heat, can be converted to the hemihydrate of calcium sulfate (CaSO4 '21H20) or plaster of paris, an intermediate product upon which is based over 90% of the value of all calcium sulfate end products. Anhydrite, on the other hand, is inert at these temperatures and its uses have been limited to only those few cases where calcium sulfate in the anhydrous form may have an advan¬tage. The earliest known use of gypsum plaster dates back some 5000 years to the time of the Pharaohs of Egypt who had discovered that gypsum rock, when exposed to fire, broke down into a powder which, when mixed with water, would form a putty that could be plastered on a rough mud brick or stone wall to make a smooth finish. It was used down through the centuries in a limited way for ornamental purposes, but did not achieve wide acceptance because of the quick (25 to 30 min) setting or hardening time which made it difficult to use. The first real understanding of gypsum chemistry was developed in France about 1755, and the gradual growth of its present utilization dates from that time. In the United States, the first utilization of gypsum was to grind it to a fine material for use as a soil conditioner at about the time of the Revolutionary War, and the term land plaster for ground gypsum was coined and has remained in use. Another cementitious material-lime or calcium oxide-had become the usual plastering material, but by about 1870 a method for retarding the set of gypsum plaster was discovered; today it has almost completely replaced lime as a plastering material. In recent years, gypsum products sold in the United States have reached a total valuation of approximately $2 Gpy as illustrated in [Table 1].

The reliability of a set of flotation results is key to minimizing project risk, either at the commissioning of a concentrator or at the point of implementing an improvement to an existing concentrator operation. High-confidence flotation testing (HCFT) was developed for this purpose and is part of the list of technologies at various scales used by Xstrata Process Support (XPS) in addressing these projects. The methodology is based on two principles: one, to ensure that the ore sample is representative and has been well-blended and subsampled; two, to perform the flotation tests in sufficient numbers of replicates with appropriate quality controls, so as to improve the reproducibility of the test data. Across ten years of research on this methodology at Xstrata Process Support, Sudbury, several improvements to the HCFT method and complementary connections between sampling and quantitative mineralogy have been developed. Two case studies are reviewed. These show the capability of this system in both optimizing an existing concentrator operation and in serving a new mine scenario. The alkalic igneous province of Montana consists of centers of laccolithic and stock-like intrusive complexes with associated sills, dikes, and breccia pipes (e.g., Judith, Highwood, Little Belt Mts.); isolated plug-like mafic bodies (e.g., Smokey and Eagle Buttes); and clusters of kimberlitic diatremes and ultrabasic dike swarms (Missouri River Breaks). The province extends in a belt throughout central Montana from the North Absaroka Range in the south to the Sweetgrass Hills on the Canadian border. Intrusive activity ranged in age from Late Cretaceous to late Miocene, peaking at about 50 m.y, ago. Diverse types of significant epithermal gold mineralization occur at many of the laccolithic centers. This mineralization took place in large part during the waning stages of, or following, igneous activity. Large remnant travertine blankets in the region attest to comparatively recent hydrothermal activity. The quartz-pyrite-gold mineralization ranges from igneous- hosted stockworks or fracture sets (Zortman-Landusky and Neihart districts) and breccia pipes (North Moccasin Mts.) to replacement zones in flanking and upwarped Madison Group limestone (Gilt Edge and Kendall districts). The latter are mostly localized by intraformational solution breccias in the upper Madison, notably near porphyry contacts. Gold mineralization in the province was accompanied by varying amounts of silver, base metals, sulfosalts, and tellurides, with quartz, fluorite, carbonate, and barite and gangue. Gold occurs as auriferous pyrite, sylvanite, or in native form. Since the 1880's, primary gold production from numerous scattered deposits in the Judith, Moccasin, and Little Rocky Mountains, along with byproduct gold from the Neihart silver district (Little Belt Mountain), has totalled around 2 million oz. The major deposits were in the 1-2 million ton range at an average gold tenor of 0.3-0.6 oz per ton. Most of the ore was mixed oxide or carbonaceous sulfide ore and was treated either by amalgamation or by roasting-cyanidation. Current activity includes heap-leach operations on bulk- tonnage low-grade (approximately 0.03 oz per ton) ores at Zortman-Landusky, and several small-scale, experimental leach or mining operations on carbonaceous replacement ores, as in the Kendall district and Spotted Horse mine. Current exploration efforts for gold are focused not only in the old established districts, but also in and around other alkalic centers, which have been unproductive to date, such as the Crazy Mountains, Sweetgrass Hills, and Bearpaw Mountains. Target concepts in these efforts are porphyry-hosted stockwork or disseminated gold ores and Carlin-type replacement lodes in the flanking Madison or other favorable carbonate units.
