Composite materials are finding new applications daily, ranging from automotive parts to synthetic lumber. The variety of applications seems almost limitless. However, these emerging products bring both new opportunities and new challenges to the field of industrial minerals. One of the primary challenges is from alternative materials other than industrial minerals. Thus the question is asked whether industrial minerals will truly benefit from the growth in market applications for composite plastics. This article highlights some of the opportunities for industrial minerals while focusing on performance and competitive demands on mineral products intended for use in this developing market.

In September 1992, mining in Mexico was opened again to foreign investment by President Salinas-de Gortari, after thirty years of "Mexicanization" of mining industry which limited foreign participation up to a 49 % (or 34 % in case of national reserves) on a Mexican mining corporation. During said period mining in Mexico was controlled by four or five big mining companies and besides mining production was focused mainly on silver, lead, zinc, copper and fluorspar. Suddenly in middle of a big crisis on Mexican mining industry due to low prices of minerals in the world and also in a period on which it seems that mining industry in the United States and Canada has been condemned to die for environmental reasons, it appears a new Mexican Mining Law to permit foreigners to participate in mining in Mexico' trough Mexican mining corporations that they may control up to 100 %

Design of underground openings is becoming more critical as the mine deposits become lower in grade, initial investments increase, ore depth increases, additional safety regulations come into law, and increased ore recovery is required for conservation of minerals. Stability of these openings is dependent on the strength of the rock mass and the pre-mine stress field. The rock mass is composed of solid blocks of rock (rock sub- stance) and structural features (faults, joints, bedding, etc.). Methods of testing the rock mass strength are improving and be- coming more common, however it is difficult to justify the high cost of large scale testing for an initial mine design. An alternative to testing the rock mass is to measure the rock substance and the structural features separately, and then combine them to estimate the rock mass strength. The rock mass strength will vary depending on the orientation of the opening with respect to the structural features. The other factor affecting the stability of underground open- ings is the pre-mine stress field. Methods are available to measure "directly" the pre-mine stress in competent and relatively massive rock. These methods are costly to employ, therefore, they may not be justified in an initial study. The pre-mine stress field can be estimated based on the structural relationships formed from past tectonic events.

To address the problem, a perceptive driving assistant system (PDAS) has been developed to increase the visibility of real-time video of the road in front of the vehicle for operators of heavy earth-moving machinery (HEMM) at opencast mines in harsh weather conditions.

The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility Far Site in Lead, South Dakota is currently under construction and involves drill and blast excavation of the largest and deepest caverns in North America. This paper will review how the geotechnical risks are being managed through careful consideration of excavation sequence, completion of exploratory pilot tunnels, implementation of a robust instrumentation and monitoring program, and validation against the design. Aside from having a cross section of 5,900 square feet and being situated at a depth of one mile, the caverns also employ a unique permanent rock bolt solution which underwent a significant pre-production pull testing program involving varying installation methods and being subject to blast vibrations. The behavior of the schistose rock mass and performance of the ground support are being continually monitored throughout the construction phase.

The mining industry is at a crossroad. To sustain our technically based society, demands for commodities are increasing, and exploration for these commodities is a must. The debate is between sustainable development and the status quo and begins with exploration, where it is determined if a mineralized area contains enough potential ore to be mined economically. Mineral deposits are relatively rare and depend upon certain natural geologic conditions to form and may not always occur in locations that are most suitable to society. Exploration can be compatible with environmental protection and social responsibility, but difficult challenges face the industry to develop a property that is environmentally, economically, and socially responsible.

Tables showing world trade in metallic mineral raw materials during the years 1953 through 1957 have been prepared for the following twenty-one commodities: alumina, aluminum, bauxite, chromite, copper concentrates, partly refined and fully refined copper metal, iron ore, pig iron, iron and steel (simple shapes), lead concentrates, lead metal, manganese ore, mercury metal, nickel ore, concentrates, and matte, nickel metal, raw pyrites, sintered pyrites, tin concentrates, tin metal, zinc concentrates, and zinc metal. In each instance, the amounts given by the importing country were used except when statistics from the importing nation were lacking, incomplete, or misleading. To show the considerable divergence between importing and exporting country totals for the same years, the complete mercury table is given and, in parallel columns, shows the comparable tonnages of importers and exporters. Tables for the other twenty commodities are presented in summary form. The data of the concentrate tables are used with those of the corresponding metals as a basis for a discussion of trade in concentrates versus trade in metals. The data of all twenty-one tables provide the basis for testing the thirteen rules governing international trade in metal raw materials which I first published in Mining Engineering for July 1955. Because the 1953 through 1957 data are far more complete and considerably more extensive than those on which the 1955 rules were based, it was found possible to deduce five additional rules and to modify three of the original thirteen appreciably. "The increasing demand for underground works in urban centers, and in particular the need to build undercrossing tunnels, requires constant evolution in building techniques in order to achieve success and safety. In the case of Brasilia, capital of Brazil, in order to preserve an important avenue (Eixo Monumental), where are located many historical monuments, the construction of a tunnel was envisioned as an option to interconnect the National Stadium (on one side of the avenue) to the Convention Center Ulysses Guimarães (on the other side). The excavation design is comprised of a coverage smaller than one diameter, height of 7.5 m, width of 9.0 m and length of 25 m. In order to enable a negligible influence on the avenue’s usage, the structure is designed as a portico system composed of pipe canopy. In this context, this study presents the portico analytical solution computed with the aid of the software Mathematica and a numerical solution using the software ABAQUS. INTRODUCTION Undercrossing tunnels are increasingly common in urban centers as alternative roads or as access to underground works of large dimensions (stations and parking lots). The geomechanical conditions of the soil mass, not always favorable, and the low distance between tunnel’s ceiling and the surface require intense treatment of the soil massif and execution of a rigid support system. The importance of the road just above the undercrossing tunnel emphasizes the need for a highly competent monitoring system because existing structures require minimum allowable displacement and do not allow the interruption of traffic. The soils that are excavated for the construction of undercrossing tunnels are composed, in most cases, of layers of fill and / or soft soil or weak rock, showing stability problems when subjected to tunneling operations. The combination of low coverage and week ground is solved by soil improvement techniques and strengthening of the excavated cross-section with further advance with the so-called New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). Another option is to build structural frames that support the surface. In this research, and based on the context of a case study, we propose the study of the construction technique comprising a portico structure composed of pipe canopy. For this paper, the technical standards used are the Brazilian ones as the case study refers to this country."

INTRODUCTION Tunnels are commonly constructed in the very weak St. Peter sandstone in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota. Historically, core recovery in this weak sandstone was very small in the critical weaker strata resulting in little preconstruction information on the ground conditions. Improved core recovery techniques have been utilized for recent projects, allowing rock quality rating methods to be developed for the recovered core. Down-the-hole tests, and the use of combination ratings between different types of core data provide for more detailed characterization of ground conditions. THE ST. PETER SANDSTONE The 45 m thick St. Peter is an unusually pure quartz sandstone. It underlies all the Twin Cities area, except where it has been eroded by the present day Mississippi River or by pre-glacial rivers. It forms conspicuous steep bluffs along the Mississippi River where the upper Platteville limestone formation protects it from erosion. Where the Platteville formation is missing, the sandstone slopes are often more gentle. Natural case hardening of the exposed sandstone bluffs often forms a resistant crust and reduces sloughing. This case-hardened surface is not representative of the sandstone back from the bluff.

Red Dog, the world’s largest zinc mine, is located ninety miles north of the Arctic Circle in northwest Alaska on lands owned by the Inupiat Eskimo organization called NANA. NANA received a subsurface title over this resource as part of their settlement lands under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act and subsequently entered into a Lease Agreement with Cominco in 1982. Cominco, an international mining company focused on zinc, built and operated the mine. NANA’s principle objective in the development of the mine was to have it contribute to the development of sustainable communities within their traditional region. This meant creating job opportunities in a modern economy while preserving the traditional subsistence lifestyles. Preservation of their culture, language, and traditions are as important to the NANA people today as they were through ages past. The principles of sustainable development – matching economic, environmental, and social goals through continuous communications and high commitment to efficient and effective operations – have been core values for the Red Dog Mine from the beginning. This paper will describe how a large mining operation in a remote corner of the world has been able to contribute toward sustainable development in that region.

The Narragansett Bay Commission Phase III CSO Program includes construction of the 11,600-foot long, 30-foot ID, deep rock Pawtucket Tunnel in Rhode Island. This paper provides an overview of the Design Build Project features and highlight some of the important design considerations, features, and innovations, including geologic conditions and related TBM design, and deep shaft and tunnel segment designs. The paper provides the most recent updates on some of the project construction activities including TBM tunnel progress and retrieval schemes, tunnel pump station and deep vertical shaft liner installations, SEM construction, and microtunneling for the longest adit using Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar pipes.

"A numerical conditioning analysis for mineral recovery estimation was performed for industrial flotation plants, considering the copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo) and iron (Fe) separability. A modified relative condition number, ?, was presented that allowed sensitivity analysis to be evaluated for the component recovery by means of an analytical formula. This closed form made it possible for the error propagation to be determined from feed, concentrate and tail grades with different orders of magnitude. The ? parameter can be evaluated using available grade data from the design criteria or historical mass balances, in which the variability is typically unknown. Reconciled data from different Cu/Mo concentrators were employed to evaluate the effect of small numerical disturbances in the grade data on the mineral recovery estimation. Higher error propagation was typically observed for Fe. The Mo minerals presented numerical problems, mainly in second cleaners and in the first cell of rougher banks. Lower condition numbers were observed for Cu due to the higher flotation rates.Mass-balance data reconciliation without redundancy was evaluated for a typical Cu/Mo flotation circuit using relative error minimization. Significant relative errors in the mineral recovery estimation were obtained with nonreconciled data in ill-conditioned problems. Negligible improvements in the mineral recovery estimation because of the data reconciliation with regard to the nonreconciled approach were obtained in well-conditioned problems. In addition, the improvements in mineral recovery estimation by using Cu, Mo and Fe in the data reconciliation were nonsignificant with respect to using only the best-conditioned component in well- and ill-conditioned problems.Despite the effort in data reconciliation and data repetition, poor performance may be obtained in ill-conditioned problems, which can deteriorate the flotation rate characterization. The error propagation has a negative impact on the mineral recovery of the first cell, which may significantly bias the flotation rate characterization of both valuable and nonvaluable elements.IntroductionMass balances have been extensively used in flotation processes to determine the mass flowrates (production) and mineral recovery (efficiency) of valuable minerals. Simple relationships for steadystate processes based on the feed, concentrate and tail grades can be obtained by taking a black-box approach. However, the calculation of concentrate flowrates from different components of the system, such as size fractions, chemical elements or minerals, does not satisfy the mass-conservation principle because of measurement errors (Smith and Ichiyen, 1973; Romagnoli and Sánchez, 2000). Mass-balance data reconciliation allows for obtaining a unique solution that satisfies the total and component mass balances, making small adjustments to the process data and taking advantage of the information redundancy (Narasimhan and Jordache, 2000). This methodology, which is based on a constrained weighted least-squares minimization, has proved to be robust when measurement errors are normally distributed, in the absence of gross errors.Commercial software has been developed to conduct massbalance data reconciliation in flotation processes, including MATBAL (Algosys, 2002), BILMAT (Algosys, 2013), JKMultibal (JKTech, 2013), BILCO (Caspeo, 2013) and HSC Chemistry (Outotec, 2013), which accomplish the reconciliation using known data accuracy in the optimization problem. The data accuracy can be obtained by sampling a stream n times in a run, known as repeats, each with independent chemical assays. Some unmeasured variables can be estimated using the measuring redundancy and sensor location. At present, grade and flow rate sensors may be incorporated in flotation to conduct real-time mass balances. The introduction of computer technology to the mining industry has produced many benefits for the mining engineer. The most significant is the dramatic increase in productivity realized by the individual user. This is important during times of competitive market conditions. Software for the minerals and energy industries has evolved substantially over the past decade. But even today it remains difficult to find a system that features the flexibility and integration capabilities to effectively (and cost-effectively) handle the needs of professionals in each phase of the mining industry - from exploration to reclamation. Several national software developers are now addressing this challenge. One Denver-based company, MINEsoft Ltd., offers a software package that is currently being used in each phase of the mining industry. The basic technology used in MINEsoft's database management system was developed in the 1960s. But during these early years of the computer industry, most of the technology was available only on mainframe computers, and then only as separate entities. MINEsoft's system unifies these various systems in one package that can be used on most computers manufactured today. Database Management System TECHBASE is a flexible, integrated database management system designed specifically for technical applications. The system features a database manager with no practical limit to the amount of data it can store, retrieve, and manipulate, according to the company. TECHBASE in¬cludes Applications Packages (TAPs) designed to meet the needs of professionals in a host of industries. Clients use the TECH BASE system to prepare many reports, including important EPA information. The package reduces data to a manageable level and enables users to increase productivity with a smaller staff. Mining engineers no longer need to do things by hand. What used to be a day's work can be accomplished in an hour or two. Exploration "Using the TECHBASE system to generate maps has probably saved us the expense of three or four draftsmen," says Ralph Fitch, regional manager and senior staff geologist with Chevron Resources in Portland, ME. "The system has great flexibility. You can treat it much like a spreadsheet. If you are halfway through with a particular project, the system allows you to add fields and calculations with ease but without starting over." Fitch uses TECHBASE for the "straightforward" plotting of results and generation of geochemical and geophysical profiles. "In exploration," he says, "these are the two key elements ... the generation of maps and data profiles. The system allows you to plot as many elements and variables in these areas that you like." "Mining is an important part of the economy of Namibia. In 2016, 11.1 percent of the GDP was the result of mining activities with 22 active mines (The Chamber of Mines of Namibia, 2016). Only one of them consists of an underground mining operation.The global annual production of fluorspar is approximately 5.4 to 6.3 Mt (6 to 7 million st) (U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals Information Center, 2017). Okorusu has produced on average about 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) in recent years (U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals Information Center, 2015).The Okorusu Mine is Namibia’s only fluorspar mine. Fluorspar was mined in an openpit mine with four individual pits (A-D) since 1980. In 2014, the mine closed due to the increased stripping ratio and beneficiation problems. The mine assets were bought by Gecko Namibia. Currently, Gecko uses parts of the processing plant for beneficiation of graphite from a neighboring mine. Figure 1 shows a panoramic view with the four pits and the mine village.The intent is to develop a concept for the further underground development of the mine. There are still about 6.3 Mt (7 million st) of measured resources left in the deposit, with an average grade of 27.5 percent CaF2. This study focuses on the underground mine design. The above-ground plant and facilities are considered as remaining unchanged.For solving the task to design the mine, a site visit for data collecting was conducted. Resource estimations were calculated based on existing drill data, and consequently, block models were created. The development of the mine design included the selection of the most suitable mining method, mining technology and mine organization. Moreover, some economic considerations are pointed out, followed by a profitability assessment."

This paper documents a probabilistic resource modeling workflow for the Round Mountain epithermal gold deposit. The set of categorical and continuous variable simulated realizations provides a model of variability and uncertainty given the current orebody knowledge. These realizations can be used to quantify and understand expected deviations in reconciliation during mining and provide a more accurate measure of expected gold than an estimated model. Gold mineralization at Round Mountain is primarily contained within tertiary tuff units, which dip gently to the west and thicken towards the southern part of the orebody. Domain boundaries are modeled as combinations of lithology and alteration; alteration domains are constrained to be within the tuffs. Large-scale geologic uncertainty is strongly influenced by parameter uncertainty, particularly the input histogram. The spatial bootstrap characterizes prior global uncertainty in the input histogram for categorical and continuous variables. Categorical models are generated using hierarchical truncated pluri-Gaussian (HTPG) simulation. Continuous variable simulation is carried out within the simulated domain boundaries using trend models to account for non-stationarity.

This study investigates the roof stability of underground limestone mining in the presence of stratified joints during the excavation process. An analytical solution is derived to predict the stresses and deformation of underground tunnel structures, with the structure simplified as a double-hinge arch. The accuracy of the analytical model is validated through comparison with finite element modeling results. A parametric study is then conducted to assess the influence of different design parameters on the optimization of tunnel stability during excavation. The results indicate that the best stability of the tunnel can be achieved in engineering practices when the applied load (q) is 5 MPa and the joint inclination angle (θ) is 45°, with the roof span and thickness set at either 12 m and 8 m or 15 m and 10 m. These findings provide valuable design guidance for underground limestone mines with stratified joints.

Risk assessment of mining projects is a requirement in the mineral industries. In this process, many risk variables are timedependent, and the only available data are historical time series. Moreover, in the case of a multivariate scenario, conventional forecasting methods fail to capture conditional dependency across the variables, which is important when there is an underlying causal relationship that needs to be modeled for accurate project evaluation. Thus, we investigated the use of copulas to capture the conditional distribution of the factors involved in a mine risk assessment study. We employed a multivariate copula-based time-series approach to model several uncertain variables. The Autoregressive Fractionally Integrated Moving Average - Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (ARFIMA-GARCH) model was used for the conditional mean and copulas were used to model the error distribution, thus capturing the collective variation and dependence pattern across the variables. The method was implemented to model gold prices, copper prices, and the 10-year US Treasury bond yields and to determine the project’s net present value and probability of being economically feasible. The proposed approach can be used for cases where simulation of multivariate time-series is conducted.

"Due to new technological developments, automatic sensor based sorting has made progress within industrial minerals, precious metals, diamond, and coal mining in recent years (Lessard et. al. 2016). In order to re-introduce the technology to other mining sectors, this research discusses its application to iron, manganese, and zinc ores through test works performed by the authors. These test works were performed using Dual Energy X-ray Transmission (DE-XRT) sensor technology. In each case, pre-concentrations of the ore were created demonstrating the possibility to reduce waste material, energy costs, and water consumption while improving product quality of the ores. INTRODUCTION Sorting of mining ores is as old as mining itself (Salter, 1991). Sensor based sorting applications in coal mining began as early as the late 19th century (Louis 1928). New sensor technologies were developed and implemented sequentially for uranium, nickel, coal, and gold mining (Refining, 1949, Rose et al, 1950, Bloomfield et al, 1966, Clayton et al, 1987, Robben and Mosser, 2014). While these sensor technologies were developed decades ago, computational capacity to keep pace with the vast amount of information required utilizing the sensor technology did not arrive until recently (Lessard et. al., 2016). The sensor based sorting (SBS) process was effectively described by Salter and Wyatt in Minerals Engineering in 1991, and Wotruba and Harbeck in 2010 in the Ullmann’s Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry under Sensor Based Sorting. Both descriptions include the following key steps: 1. Presentation of the material or particles. 2. Examination or detection of the material or particles. 3. Processing or analysis of the data generated. 4. Physical separation of the material or particles by external means. Effective presentation of the material or particles is achieved when the sensor is capable of identifying each particle individually. This step requires that each fragment of the material be isolated, and it often involves acceleration of the material fragments by chute or mechanical means, as well as the spreading of particles by vibratory feeders (Salter and Wyatt, 1991, and Wotruba and Harbeck, 2010). The isolated particles typically are conveyed into an area wherein they are subjected to electromagnetic irradiation (except in cases of some radioactive ores), either in the form of x-ray, visible light, infrared, or other energies. A wide range of applications for sensor based sorting exists in the literature. The majority of applications fall into one of two camps, (1) pre-concentration of mineral ores, or (2) characterization of the material during processing (Buxton and Benndorf 2013). While there is much to be gained from in-line material characterization and the resulting control both of quality and processing, this article focuses primarily on the camp of pre-concentration of mineral ores."

INTRODUCTION The Washington Camp - Duquesne mining district is located on the east flank of the Patagonia Mountains, 98 kilometers south of Tucson and within 5 kilometers of the International border (Figure 1). Since the development of high-grade silver and copper ores by settlers in 1862, the Washington Camp - Duquesne district has yielded an estimated 450,000 metric tons of ore. The mined ores averaged 8% zinc, 2% copper, 3% lead and 124 grams of silver. REGIONAL GEOLOGY The Patagonia batholith, of Laramide age, crops out in the core of the Patagonia Mountains intruding Precambrian granite, Paleozoic sediments and Mesozoic igneous, volcanic and clastic rocks. This granodioritic batholith lies in a northwest-trending zone of Laramide plutonic rocks, which can be traced for a distance of 320 kilometers from the Nacozari district in Sonora, Mexico to the Silver Bell Mountains west of Tucson, Arizona. Several major porphyry copper systems occur within this plutonic belt including the Red Mountain deposit found at the northern end of the Patagonia Mountains. Data from more than 80 mineral deposits within the Patagonia Mountains show metal zoning symmetrical to the Patagonia granodiorite (Graybeal, 1975). Disseminated copper-molybdenum deposits occur within the batholith. Pyrometa-somatic, limestone replacement and vein deposits of copper, lead, zinc and silver occur in the wallrocks adjacent to the. granodiorite and epithermal manganese-silver deposits occur at the outer periphery of economic mineralization. GEOLOGY OF THE WASHINGTON CAMP - DUQUESNE DISTRICT Stratigraphy Nearly 900 meters of miogeosynclinal Permian and Pennsylvanian sediments are exposed in the district (Figure 2). In addition, 700 meters of older Paleozoic rocks crop out 6 kilometers north of the district. The Paleozoic rocks occur in fault contact with a sequence of Triassic-Jurassic pyroclastic and flow rocks, ranging in composition from latite to rhyolite.

Developing a method to accurately determine the weight and distribution of the load within a shuttle car bed eliminates the need for manual activation of the flight chain. Accordingly, this experimental study characterized the thermo-mechanical response of two unique load cells in force shunt, implemented as an engineering control to quantify load position and distribution without human intervention. The influence of environmental and installation conditions on the measurement accuracy was quantified and determined to be indirectly dependent on the characteristics of the material load cells that are mounted to.
