Geologic mapping was undertaken in the Sierrita Mountains as part of a Doctoral program at the University of Arizona, Tucson. During the study, approximately 35 square miles was mapped in detail, with particular attention given to specific areas of great or significant structural complexity and their relation to mineralization in the vicinity. A combination, of field studies and photogeologic interpretation was used in order to define regional and local structural controls for disseminated copper-molybdenum mineralization in and adjacent to the study area. Gratitude is expressed to the faculty of the University of Arizona, Department of Geology for their assistance in this work and to Bear Creek Mining Company for making numerous reports and drill cores available for study.

This section deals with one of the most fascinating aspects of mining the evaluation of mine investment opportunities. Be-fore proceeding further, it is important to clarify the meaning of some fundamental terms used frequently in the text. 6.0.1.1 Mine Valuation vs. Evaluation The words "valuation" and "evaluation" in a mining context are often used interchangeably. However, for the purposes of this section, a distinction is made between the two terms in accordance with commonly accepted practice. The word valuation in a mining project context has the rather narrow meaning of placing a dollar or other currency value on the worth of the project as a whole. In other words, the value of a mining project refers to a measure of the desirability of ownership of that property. As such, the major item of interest is, "what is the mine worth?," or `what is the value of the mine?" The value of a mining project may actually be determined in the marketplace at any specific point in time, or it may be estimated by one of several methods. "In 2018, the total estimated value of nonfuel mineral production in the United States increased by 3 percent from 2017 to $82.2 billion. The estimated value of metals produced domestically decreased by 4 percent, and the estimated value of indusrial minerals produced domestically increased by 7 percent (Table 1).Some idle U.S. metal mines and processing facilities restarted in 2018, including two primary aluminum smelters in Indiana and Missouri, a rare-earths mine in California and a zinc mine in New York. In contrast, four iron ore mines in Minnesota and a pelletizing plant in Indiana were shut down. Increased oil and natural gas drilling activity in 2018 led to increased production of some industrial mineral commodities that are used for oil and gas drilling, including barite and industrial sand and gravel. Production of industrial minerals primarily used in infrastructure and residential construction — including, cement, construction sand and gravel, crushed stone and gypsum — increased in 2018. Overall, mining activity trended upward for the second consecutive year because of increases in oil and gas extraction and industrial mineral mining (Table 2).Mineral industry performanceDiscussion of mine production is commonly segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as natural aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the nonfuel minerals industry, the value of production is used rather than the tonnage produced. Tonnages of natural aggregates are orders of magnitude larger than those for most other mineral commodities, thus making direct comparisons based on weight meaningless (Fig. 1)."

One of the present trends in the mining industry is the increased use of mining contractors. In the past, many project owners have utilized mining contractors for topsoil stripping or overburden removal, usually on a short-term or periodic basis. In recent years, mining contractors have not only removed the overburden, but mined the product as well. Why is this change occurring? A prevalent trend in the mining industry appears to be the outsourcing of non-core and non-strategic functions, allowing producers to focus more on areas of technical expertise where higher incremental value is added—that is the processing, refining, and marketing of the product. As capital allocation becomes more critical, this trend is likely to continue.

In the Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance (HSSR) phase of its National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) pro¬gram, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) samples about 1400 sites for stream sediments in each two-degree quadrangle of the National Topographic Nap Series (NTMS) and about 1200 sites for ground or stream water. Through a geological/statistical analysis, we find that NURE data are useful for assessing the uranium resources of the NTMS quadrangles. Our computer-implemented System for Uranium Resource Evaluation (SURE) calculates a score for each NTMS quadrangle based on the HSSR, geologic, and radiometric data; we score the four Colorado quadrangles--Pueblo, Montrose, Durango, and Trinidad--that comprise the study area. We interpret the scores in terms of geology and the known occurrences, which include the Hanson ore deposit with reserves of 30,000,000 lbs. U308 and the Pitch mine with reserves of 1,740,000 lbs. SURE depends in part on distinguishing mineralized or metalliferous granitoids from barren ones through "geochemical signatures."

The effect of various constituents on the pyrolysis and combustion of a pulverized coal in an entrained-flow reactor has been inves¬tigated. Predicted time-temperature histories of the coal' particles and experimental weight loss data indicate a strong coupling of heat and mass transfer to the pyrolysis and combustion rates. A higher combustion rate following ignition was observed as particle size was increased to 112 µm. This is related to a higher particle temperature after ignition for the larger particles. Although the heating rate prior to ignition decreases with increasing particle size, higher slip velocities and surrounding gas temperatures for the larger particles promote early ignition. The presence of liptinite in the coal increases the weight loss rate before and immediately after ignition. Similar behavior was observed for pyrolysis. Fractions of a HVA bituminous coal which were rich in mineral matter or semi-fusinite were found to have a higher heterogeneous char combustion rate than vitrinite rich samples.

Separation Technologies Inc.’s (STI) electrostatic separation technology is a dry, continuous process for the separation of discrete particles. This high-volume process does not require any additives nor is any additional waste produced. In December 1993, STI, in cooperation with New England Power(NEP), installed an 18-t/h (20-stph) prototype electrostatic separator at NEP’s Salem Harbor plant. The plan was to convert waste streams of type F fly ash into commercially valuable products. In July 1995, a second separator was installed at NEP’s Brayton Pointplant. Fly ash feed, ranging from 6% to 25% carbon (loss-of-ignition fly ash or LOI), is separated into <3% LOI “clean” ash and sold as a portland cement substitute in the New England concrete markets.

The Magnetometsic Resistivity (MMR) method is based on the measurement of the low-level, low-frequency magnetic fields associated with non-inductive current flow in the earth. The traditional resistivity method maps the electrical properties of the earth by measuring the electric field caused by galvanic current flow between a pair of current electrodes. The MMR method differs from it in that the potential electrodes are replaced by a sensitive coil or magnetometer and a component of the magnetic field due to the current flow is recorded. The presence of an inhomogeneity redistributes the current flow which results in a perturbation of the electric field and, usually, of the magnetic field. The electric field immediately above a relatively conductive inhomogeneity must, by Ohm&apos;s Law, be smaller than that expected for a uniform earth. The current density in this region is also reduced but the current density within the inhomogeneity itself is enhanced so that the horizontal component of the magnetic field measured above the inhomogeneity is usually larger than that expected for a uniform earth. A method of interpretation using the magnetic anomaly was patented by Jakoskyl in 1933 but it met with little success at that time. Part of the problem was undoubtedly with the instrumentation, and only recently have robust instruments of sufficient sensitivity been developed2 and field data of good quality obtained. There are many common configurations of the potential and current electrodes in the resistivity method. Similarly, in the MMR method one or both current electrodes may be moved with the magnetometer, either horizontally or vertically ( in a bore-hole), or the current electrodes may be maintained in fixed positions and the magnetometer alone moved. The most common method of treating mine drainage to prevent water pollution consists of neutralization and aeration. This process removes the acidity, iron, aluminum, and some other heavy metals, but does not render a water suitable for domestic or industrial use because of the high dissolved solids, hardness, and sulfate in the treated water. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has been sponsoring and conducting research since 1966 on the use of reverse osmosis (R.O.) for the treatment of mine drainage. This process has been found to be highly effective in the removal of nearly all the dissolved solids. In addition, since R.O. is a concentrating process, potentials for recovery of valuable heavy metals are possible. This paper is a review of the state-of-the-art on the treatment of mine drainage by reverse osmosis.

"How Wall Street Darling Molycorp Undermined the U.S. Economy, Degraded our National Security and Distorted the Global Economic Balance and How These Falsehoods Continue to be Promoted Even Today INTRODUCTION & SUMMARY In 2007 the Molycorp Mountain Pass rare earth mine was resurrected from its desert-grave in California by its then-owner Chevron Mining. Responding to elevated rare earth prices Chevron began processing on-site rare earth concentrates left over from past mining operations that were terminated in 1998i. Chinese demand had sparked what was being described as a commodities super-cycleii. Commodity prices were on the move. Wall Street smelled opportunity. In 2008 Goldman Sachs, Pegasus Partners, Resource Capital Funds, Traxys North America LLC and Carint Group LLC acquired the mining assets from Chevron. In an environment of ever-declining ethical standards and regulatory consequences the private capital group and their investment bankers would bring Molycorp to market. Molycorp, with its high powered investment banking team of Morgan Stanley and J.P. Morganiii, easily dominated the contest. Molycorp promoted itself, largely based on its past operating history and proven reserves, as the best company to challenge China’s monopoly control over the production of rare earths: a group of elements critical to most advanced technologies and U.S. defense systemsiv. Most of Wall Street’s hottest investment sectors were dependent on these materials: alternative energy, green technologies, computing, personal communications, advanced electronics and defense systems. By late 2010 there were dozens of prospective rare earth start-up ‘mining companies’ seeking capital. Eventually the number of prospective rare earth mining companies seeking capital exceeded 400, despite the reality that supply requirements of this market were disproportionally small when compared to other natural resource sectorsv. In the world of finance ‘smart money’ picks the winners. Consequently just twovi projects attracted nearly all of the capital (Molycorp and Lynas). Wall street picked Molycorpvii. This paper will primarily focus on Molycorp. By early 2010 the words “Molycorp” and “Rare Earths” electrified many people in the mining industry, most non-Chinese manufacturing technology companies, U.S. & allied defense contractors, technocrats in the U.S. national security community and eager investors across most of the world’s stock markets. It was the hottest story of the yearviii. The financial, technology and defense press coverage verged on euphoric: heaping fuel on fuel until the highly combustible Molycorp-pyre cast a long shadow over all of its rivalsix. When the IPO match was lit the spectacular flaming pyre sucked all of the oxygen out of the rare earth spacex. Molycorp was ranked the most lucrative IPO of 2010, resulting in record breaking profits to its private investors and massive returns for its early stock holding investors."

Airborne respirable dust levels on longwalls can be reduced if operators approach the dust control problem in a logical and fundamental manner. This can be accomplished through the proper application and continued use of effective dust control techniques. The Bureau of Mines is currently assessing the effectiveness of longwall dust control techniques in use today to provide mine operators with guidelines for selecting the most appropriate control technology. This paper presents a fundamental approach to the problem of shearer dust control. Three dust control techniques to be discussed are: deep cutting/increased pick penetration for reducing the amount of respirable dust generated; drum water sprays/improved water supply system to suppress the amount of airborne respirable dust; and improved external water spray system, the "shearer-clearer," to push the dust close to the face. The techniques have been evaluated in field trials and have been shown to be both practical and effective in applications to control shearer generated dust.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration&apos;s (MSHA) Ventilation Division continues to evaluate proposed explosion-resistant seal designs. There are currently eleven specific designs for explosion-resistant seals that are suitable for construction in underground coal mines. Seal construction in operating mines must be equivalent to those constructed in the Experimental Mine during the explosion testing program. Accidental failures of seals have occurred due to explosion pressures below 138 Kpa (20 psi). The possibility exists that the failed seals were not properly constructed. Also, conditions in the vicinity of the seals may change. Water may accumulate against the seals, heave or sag may cause detrimental effects on the seals, and sloughage of the ribs may negate hitching. If seals are not properly installed or maintained, they could fail when subjected to explosion pressures. If seals fail for any reason, the possibility exists for explosion propagation throughout large areas of the mine. There could be catastrophic consequences to an event of this nature. This report will present a limited discussion on the construction of each of these seals and will address related issues.

Foskor operates a mine in the Northern Province of the Republic of South Africa exploiting the igneous complex at Phalaborwa. It produces about 3 million tons of phosphate concentrate per year by means of froth flotation from 26million tons of ore of which 16 million is mined and milled onsite. The remaining 10 million tons originate at the Palabora Mining Company and is pumped as a slurry to Foskor. Two types of ore are mined and milled namely Foskorite and Pyroxenite. (The main mineral content of this ore is Apatite, Phlogopite and Diopside.) After three stages of crushing the ore is milled using 24 rod mills and 5 verti mills. The apatite is then recovered using four stages of froth flotation. The stocks of Foskorite ore are rapidly being depleted and the PMC tailings will also fall away by the year 2002 so that the whole mining operation will then be centred around the Pyroxenite ore. This will lead to substantial increases inproduction costs. The recoveries achieved in the flotation plant are largely dependent on the successful operation of the comminution section. Parts of this plant are now 35 years old and the advantages of re-engineering, new technology and automation can only be applied to a limited extent in an effort to reduce costs. It was then decided to investigate alternative milling methods, both wet and dry.

Based on laboratory structure analyses, a pilot plant investigation was undertaken to evaluate a Michigan conglomerate native copper ore. Comminution or sized feed was accomplished using wet, closed circuit autogenous grinding with and without crushing of the recirculating load. Coarse metallics were concentrated in two stages of jigging with fine metallic copper being recovered in a three-stage xanthate flotation circuit. With a feed averaging 2.09 % Cu, copper recovery ranged from 86-93 % Cu with an average grade of 55.5 % Ca. An evaluation of the processing flowsheet is made in terms of pertinent independent, dependent, and external variables and design factors. Rate equations are developed to describe the grinding and flotation circuits separately as well as the entire circuit as a whole. Performance equations for the overall operation and for the unit operation of autogenous grinding alone are developed in terms of suitable capacity, efficiency and energy consumption terms. Thus, the effects of feed rate, recirculating load and flowsheet design can be rationally evaluated. Energy consumption for various conditions in the pilot plant is compared to the laboratory value. Additionally, size and scale up factors are discussed. Recommendations are made for further studies to be undertaken to further quantify the ore characteristics and the nature of the autogenous grinding operation. However, the feasibilty of beneficiation of this type of native copper ore by means of an autogenous grinding/jigging/flotation circuit is clearly established.

The intent of geomorphic landform design is to mimic the function of the natural landscape. In a surface mine reclamation application, geomorphic landform design has the potential to mitigate stream loss. This research quantified features of reference landforms and performed computer modeling of a conceptual valley-fill design using geomorphic landform principles. A design was created using published design parameters with a software design tool (Carlson Natural Regrade with GeoFluv). Three additional designs, incorporating field-obtained regional geomorphic landform parameters, were completed and resulted in a geomorphic landform design specific to southern West Virginia. This work illustrates the importance of field determination of the ridge to head-of-channel input and drainage density parameters. Values of ridge to head-of-channel distance measured in this study were consistently an order of magnitude greater than software recommended values (SRV); SRV = 24 m (80 ft) versus field= 220 m (720 ft). Similarly, for the drainage density parameter, the software recommended range is 6 to 9 km-1 (80-120 ft/ac). The field measurements for central Appalachia quantified the drainage density to range from 5 to 5.3 km-1 (67-70 ft/ac). This affects Appalachian valley-fill stream construction by making the stream lengths shorter and the land slopes steeper with straighter headwater channels compared with areas in the southwestern United States. While the application of geomorphic landform design to surface mine sites presents challenges, this work provides support for future applications.

The disposal of residual material from processing and combustion of coal, from incineration of domestic refuse and sewage sludges kind to the environment is a prior task for the future. Deutsche Montan Technologie (DMT) has developed a new technique which makes possible to fill-up goaf cavities behind running caving systems in coalmining. In a mixing and pumping station on the surface high concentrated suspensions are produced from the above mentioned materials. The paste is pumped through pipes to the coalfaces and via trailing discharge pipes stretched to the fracture zone in the caved-in goaf. Since three years a special designed plant is working successfully on a coal mine of Ruhrkohie AG.

Crushing and grinding practice in Sweden follows largely the international pattern. Certain special circumstances, however, have had an influence on the development. Most mines are worked underground in either quite small or in very large units. To utilize small sulphide ores, custom milling is rather common. Apart from the cement industry, the rock species treated are hard and abrasive. Another important factor is the increasingly strict requirements placed on the mechanical condition of different products, especially lump ores and coarse iron ore concentrates. A significant feature in the design and development of Swedish crushing and grinding practice has also been close cooperation between machinery manufacturers and the users. An account of these conditions and an outline of the crushing and grinding techniques employed in Sweden are presented in this paper with emphasis on the mining industry. For background purposes it may be mentioned that crude ore production in Sweden last year included 45 mill. tonsx) of iron ore, of which some 20 mill. tons from Kiruna alone, and 4 mill. tons of sulphide ore from 22 other mines, fig. 1. In addition 8 mill. tons of limestone were quarried for cement production and several million tons of stone and sand for roads, aerated concrete, etc.

The aqueous biphase separation process (ABS) has been used to separate ultrafine industrial minerals. The partition behavior ofTiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3 and kaolin was not pH dependent. The partition behavior of SiO2 was, however, pH dependent. The partition coefficient of kaolin in PEG 3400/ Na2CO3 biphase system was 150 and that of the silica in the same system was 0.02, resulting in a separation factor of 8500 between kaolin and silica. The aqueous biphase separation system was used to separate free silica from kaolin in a raw clay sample from Mexico. The partition behavior of mica, feldspar and clay from North Carolina was also evaluated.

Recent work by Haas has made available information on densities and vapor pressures of solutions of differing salinities at temperatures up to 330°C. From these data it is possible to predict the behavior of volcanic exhalations of various degrees of salinity as they approach the sea floor. Particular attention is devoted to solutions of 5.0 weight per cent NaCl and 20 weight per cent NaCl, two fluids that approximate quite closely the salinities of what Roedder termed: (1) normal hydrothermal fluids and (2) fluids typical of stratiform deposits of low-temperature conditions of origin. It is apparent that solutions above 220-230°C. cannot reach a sea floor on which the depth of water is 600 feet or less in the liquid state but will boil at some appreciable depth beneath the sea floor. Such boiling would result in the precipitation of all constituents of the ore fluids of significantly lower vapor pressure than water. The principal such constituent would be salt, and no sulfide deposits, the major constituent of which is salt are known. It follows, therefore, that ore fluids probably never get close to the sea floor of shallow seas at temperatures high enough to permit boiling. Ore fluids significantly above 230°C. can reach the sea floor in the fluid state only if the depth of the sea in the area. in question is well above 600 feet, for example, solutions at temperatures of ±300°C. reach the sea floor in the liquid state only if the depth of sea water is slightly over 3000 feet. Ore fluids reaching the sea floor at such depths may be the parents of such fluids as the Red and Salton Sea brines. On the basis of these data, the Cyprus and Kuroko deposits are discussed.
