This paper describes experimental investigations into the reductive decomposition of arsenopyrite/pyrite (FeAsS/FeS2), a gold and silver bearing iron/arsenic sulphide using metallic iron powder. The main objective was to establish and experimentally confirm the thermodynamic and kinetic feasibility of reductively decomposing the sulphide matrix for precious metals recovery. In this context, cyanidation leach tests were conducted on the reductive leach residues. The arsenopyrite/pyrite flotation concentrate, mainly studied in the hydrochloric acid medium, decomposed through the non?oxidative chemical dissolution reaction and the reductive decomposition reaction for the arsenopyrite and pyrite components, respectively. Desulphurization levels below 65% were achieved at pH values below 0.15 and iron to concentrate ratios above 1, and the system was characterized by overall very slow kinetics. The reaction system had a direct linear relationship with iron to concentrate ratio and an inverse relationship with pH. An analysis of the pyrite/iron galvanic system showed that pyrite forms a partially inert cathodic surface on which the anodic dissolution of iron occurs, supported by the hydrogen evolution reaction. This phenomenon explained the low desulphurization levels and the mineral decomposition seemed to be restricted to the non?oxidative chemical dissolution reaction for the arsenopyrite component. The cyanide leach of the reductive leach residues showed very little improvement in gold recovery. The reductive leach process for arsenopyrite/pyrite has considerable limitations in terms of both desulphurization and precious metals liberation. The Skorpion process comprises three processing steps-atmospheric leaching in sulfuric acid, zinc solvent extraction and electrowinning to produce special high grade zinc. The major mode of impurity transfer was attributed to crud runs in the solvent extraction circuit. Crud may be described as a heterogeneous, partly inorganic, partly organic mass of material which accumulates predominantly at the interface between organic and aqueous solutions. The paper describes the root causes of the crud formation in the solvent extraction circuit and optimization strategies which are being followed to prevent impurity excursions in electrowinning. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently conducted full-scale explosion experiments; these experiments evaluated the strength characteristics of various seal designs used for safely isolating worked-out areas in underground coal mines. Large-scale explosion tests were conducted within the multiple entry section of PRL's Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) employing the only currently accepted test method endorsed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for seal design in American mines. These explosion tests are labor-intensive, expensive to conduct, and can interfere with other critical underground safety and health research programs conducted by NIOSH. Therefore, the PRL has developed an alternative seal evaluation method, based on a hydrostatic pressure loading concept, that can facilitate the in-situ testing of seals in an operating mine. Two chambers within LLEM and one within the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) were used for hydrostatic pressure loading various seal designs. The results from tests in these chambers compare favorably with those from the large-scale explosion tests in the multiple entries. Preliminary size-scaling relationships for predicting the strength of standard seal designs as a function of entry size is also presented. In addition to testing seal designs at the required 20 psi static pressure level, the new facilities also allow for the determination of the seal's ultimate failure pressure. This new approach shows promise as an alternative evaluation method for improving mine sealing technologies which, in turn, will enhance the safety of the underground personnel.

The Kriel Colliery is an Anglo Coal mine which is contracted with Eskom to produce No. 4 seam for Kriel power station. The mine previously found it uneconomical to mine No. 5 seam due to the low qualities and tonnages of the seam, both at the opencast and underground sections. An area has been encountered for the first time at Kriel Colliery opencast pit 5, where the tonnage and qualities of No. 5 seam warrant further investigation. The primary reason for the investi¬gation of No. 5 seam by Kriel Colliery is because of the advantage of the high selling price (R450/t) that the market is currently prepared to pay for the No. 5 seam. The aim of this project is to mine No. 5 seam economically without interrupting No. 4 seam mining operations. The problem is that the equipments that are currently being used at the mine belong to Eskom and are dedicated to mining No. 4 seam only, not No. 5 seam. Through geology investigation, it is found that the whole No. 5 seam (No. 5 seam upper and lower) has an average thickness of 1.8 m. It also contains a parting of carbonaceous shale which divides the seam into two parts. No. 5 seam upper contains less tonnage compared to No. 5 seam lower. The calorific value and ash content of No. 5 seam lower is far better than No. 5 seam upper, but would still require washing the coal. This makes No. 5 seam lower the preferred seam to mine because it meets the requirements of the customer which is Highveld Steel. It is a coincidence that the area containing No. 5 seam under investigation encounters high overburden problems. The problem of drilling to No. 4 seam was going to be encountered because the thickness of the overburden ranges from 35 to 39 m. The Gardner Denver at the mine can drill blastholes only to a depth of 34.5 m, meaning the full overburden will not be drilled at once. This means the mining of No. 5 seam will do favours for Eskom because the overburden thickness will be minimized. This then led to an agreement between Anglo Coal and Eskom to mine No. 5 seam because both companies benefit from the project. In order to identify a suitable mining method for No. 5 seam lower, literature studies took place. It is found that San Juan mine from the USA has similar geological features to Kriel Colliery's No. 5 seam. Through comparisons, it is found that truck and shovel mining would suit the geology of Kriel Colliery's No. 5 seam since San Juan mine is using it. The sequence of mining No. 5 seam lower allows for a clearance of two cuts between the truck and shovel operation and the dragline. The mining sequence of No. 5 and 4 seam will be in the order of top soil removal; soft overburden pre-stripping; pre-strip drilling; pre-strip hard overburden; No. 5 seam lower coaling; interburden drilling and blasting; interburden stripping and No. 4 seam coaling. Financial evaluation of the project shows that a contractor will charge Kriel Colliery (Anglo Coal) approximately R 102.2 million to mine No. 5 seam successfully. The sales of No. 5 seam lower will provide a profit of R99.4 million at a yield of 70% from the washing plant. The project is beneficial to both Eskom and Anglo Coal because Eskom will have eliminated the problem of pre-stripping and Anglo Coal will generate additional profit. Through investigation and analyses of the project, it is proven to be viable and should take place. This is after looking at the advantages that the project has for Anglo Coal and Eskom. 1. ANTECEDENTS This present communication refers to the results of the research project entitled "Training in the correct use of chemical oxygen self rescue apparatus and also an analysis of apparatus autonomy", carried out under the auspices of the Specific Collaboration Agreement signed between the Industry Council of the Principality of Asturias (Spain) and INSALUD (National Silicosis Institute, Spain). The antecedents of this project lie in work undertaken by the National Silicosis Institute aimed at optimising efficiency in the use of chemical oxygen self rescuers through improvements in worker training. To be precise, by means of Agreements drawn up between the above-mentioned parties, a simulator was designed and incorporated as the basis of a training station within the " Fundación Barredo" of the Industry Council of the Principality of Asturias. This has been operative since the year 2001 and, up to the present, 2300 Asturian coal mine workers have been trained there. What prompted this activity was the observation of various errors in the use of the self rescuers, deriving from their innate characteristics, especially with respect to the sensation of discomfort - the high temperature and humidity of the breathed oxygen, resistance and inconvenience - and limited autonomy. It was precisely this insight that, in critical situations, lack of familiarity with the conditions of discomfort likely to be experienced during the evacuation process might lead to rejection of the equipment, with fatal consequences, that has justified the setting up of this training and simulation centre. The centre is able to provide all mine workers with the necessary training, and experience of the characteristic sensations experienced when using such equipment (Fig.. 1).

A retrospective study was conducted on the Rand Mutual Assurance (RMA) noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) compensation claims from 1998 to 2008 to determine if the 2008 milestone agreed at the 2003 Mine Health and Safety Summit was achieved. The number and costs of NIHL compensation claims in different commodity sectors and workplaces were collated. A secondary analysis of the ages of employees compensated after 2008 was conducted. A complementary retrospective analysis of audiogram data investigated the percentage loss of hearing (PLH) shift in different homogeneously exposed groups and occupations at two gold mines. The compensation claims analysis indicated a significant decrease in NIHL claims from 1998 to 2008, but the milestone was not achieved. The reason may be either that claims have not been submitted timeously as required by Instruction 171 and that the current submissions are a result of pre-2003 noise exposure, or that employees who were baselined are still developing NIHL owing to ineffective hearing conservation programmes in place in the mining industry. On the basis of best practice for hearing conservation, recommendations are made for leading indicators in hearing conservation programmes and for reducing the risks of NIHL in order to achieve the 2013 milestone.

The mine production scheduling problem (MPSP) has been studied since the 1960s, and remains an active area of computational research. In extending the concepts of the MPSP, the automated mine may now be regarded as a hierarchical intelligent agent in which the bottom layer consists of distributed robotic equipment, while strategic functionality occupies the higher layers. Here we present a disambiguation of artificial intelligence, machine learning, computational optimization, and automation within the mining context. Specifically, the Q-learning algorithm has been adapted to generate the initial solutions for a high-performing strategic mine planning algorithm, originally developed by Lamghari, Dimitrakopoulos and Ferland, based on the variable neighbourhood descent (VND) metaheuristic. The hierarchical intelligent agent is presented as an integrative conceptual platform, defining the interaction between our new Q-learning adaptation and Lamghari’s VND, and potentially other hierarchically controlled components of an artificially intelligent mine, having various degrees of automation. Sample computations involving Q-learning and VND are presented.

E. H. D. Carman: The results achieved at Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company Limited are very encouraging and it seems certain that as far as the conventional uranium recovery process is concerned solvent extraction must entirely supplant the old resin ion exchange process. The operational costs given by Mr Meyburgh indicate that the chief cost items in solvent extraction are reagents. In other words 38.4 per cent of the operational cost at Buffelsfontein is due to the replacement of the organics lost from the plant. It is reported from a wide field of experience that loss, particularly of amine, is a direct function both of the quantity and nature of finely divided suspended solids in the pregnant solution and the extent to which the design of the mixers causes the formation of secondary dispersions which do not easily separate in the settler. There is in addition the unavoidable loss of amine due to its solubility in the aqueous solution which is thought to be about 4 p.p.m. In order to minimise solvent losses therefore, efficient clarification at the head of the solvent extraction plant would appear to be a most important requirement. For this reason the newly erected plant at West Driefontein Gold Mining Company Limited has two Funda Pressure Filters each with a filtering area of 540 sq. ft. which are together designed to handle up to 440 g.p.m. of filtrate. This plant has not yet been commissioned but preliminary testing indicates that suspended solids in the sub micron size range which do not settle even on protracted standing of the solution, will rapidly blind the clarifiers. This should not affect solution clarity but frequent backwashing adds to the cost of precoating. The difficulty was countered in the laboratory with continuous additions of filter aid in addition to the precoat but, as Table 11shows, cost of filter aid is high and its use will have to be optimized against organic losses due to less efficient clarification. This will need much careful observation over a relatively long period of time. Costs shown in Table 11 are based on Mr Meyburgh's figures adjusted to probable conditions at West Driefontein Gold Mining Company Limited. The assumption based on small scale testing is that it will cost 5.2c/ton in filter aid to clarify filtrate to a level of about 5 p.p.m. of suspended solids, in order to restrict the amine loss to 10 p.p.m. which is likely to be equivalent to an entrained organic loss worth approximately only 2.6 cents per ton. Of course poor clarification as mentioned earlier is only one of two or even more causes of organic losses and it seems obvious on the above basis that the operation and economics of pressure clarification will need close investigation. A second important consideration at West Driefontein has been the design of the pump-mixers which must perform the dual function of phase mixing and providing the necessary hydraulic gradient for counter current flow of the two phases. The arrangement is shown in Fig. 1.

Phosphate ore is an important strategic mineral resource in which apatite is the main valuable mineral. Flotation is the most commonly used method to separate apatite from middle-low grade phosphate rock. Selective flotation separation is based on the difference of physical and chemical properties of minerals occurring at the three interfaces of mineral/bubble/water. Surface and interface chemistry of mineral have been playing an important role in interpreting and governing its flotation phenomenon. In-situ, visualized and high-precision analytical techniques, such as Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry, Atomic Force Microscopy and Molecular Simulation, have been applied to explore and uncover microscopic nature of apatite flotation. Consequently, a great progress at molecular or atomic level on surface and interface chemistry of apatite flotation has achieved in the past decades. In this paper, the research progress of surface and interface chemistry of apatite flotation such as surface wettability, surface-charging characteristics, surface dissolution behavior, adsorption mechanisms of fatty acid collector and depressor on apatite surface were systematically reviewed. This review will be helpful for the development of more selective reagents and efficient technologies for apatite flotation. The density, porosity, and strength of rocks are fundamental in the design of geo-engineering projects. Determining these properties requires the preparation of smooth core samples, which is usually impossible for soft rocks. Besides, only fragmented samples may be available in some projects. A method for predicting rock properties from rock particles such as drilling debris would therefore be useful. This study was undertaken to develop prediction equations for compressive strength (UCS), tensile strength (BTS), density, and porosity values from the crushability index (CI) obtained from rock fragments. The results showed that UCS, BTS, density, and porosity were strongly correlated with the CI. The physical characteristics and strength of rocks may be predicted with the help of the derived equations. The CI test is a valuable tool for estimating rock properties in drilling projects and in situations where core specimens are not available.

WeissThe reasons for failure of computer applications in the mineral industry and the direction of future developments.The Chairman opened the discussion by elaborating on the disappointment felt by some authorities with the lack of progress in the application of computers in the mineral industry during the last ten years, and posed the question to the panel : 'Do you agree that the computer age has not come up to expectations?'Mr Langton said that although there seemed to be a tremendous amount of brainpower applied to the theoretical side, he thought that the production men had not got all the help from computers that could have been given to them. The computer, said Prof Griffiths, is as yet a new tool which should not be used to do old things in old ways. To learn to use the computer will take time. After all, he said, it had taken 400 years after the introduction of the printing press to achieve general literacy, and perhaps it will take 40 years after the introduction of the computer to achieve `numeracy'.In Mr Weiss' view, the reason for the feeling of disappoint¬ment lay in the focussing of attention on the computer. The blame, if any, lay with the people surrounding the computer, that is, the analysts and programmers, to whom the emphasis should be shifted.Prof Hawkins said that he thought that some applications of the computer in the mineral industry had been successful, such as, for example, the compilation of payrolls. Reasons for failures in other areas were to be sought in the fact that the people connected with computers had failed to realise that they were merely part of a system. They had not understood the power structure of the organization which their work tended to change, and were therefore not prepared for the inevitable conflict with the production men.In Mr Splaine's view the production man had not received the assistance he could have had from the computer people because he may possibly not have allowed this to happen.Prof Bleksley concluded from these opinions that the promise which computers had ton years ago had not been fulfilled and added that the opinions expressed by the panel had intruded on his next question which was: 'Is the reason for this that people are involved?Prof Hawkins elaborated on his previous theme, namely, that of computer people in relation to management. Com-puter people, he said, were trying to impose change on management but were not prepared to share the responsibility for these changes. In fact, they wanted their work to be distinct and separate, and, as far as management was concerned, changes would be made when management believed that these would be less agonizing than no change at all."

Lightning has been observed in dust clouds following open-pit blasting. It is proposed that the occurrence of this phenomenon is related to the physical composition and characterization of the mineral fines that comprise the bulk of the dust cloud. Silicate minerals, which are susceptible to fine fracturing during blasting, generate the initial charge. This is further enhanced by collisions and friction during the turbulent upcast in the post-blast dust cloud. Varying size fractions result in different rates at which these particles drop out of suspension and create a secondary temperature gradient. This results in the creation of two charged zones and increases the potential of developing a discharge in the form of lightning. The ideal prevailing meteorological conditions need to be windless to minimize the effect of particle dissipation and have sufficient moisture toenhance the potential of generating lightning.

Crushing plant managers need to assess, manage, and communicate the environmental impact induced by their crushing plant operations as a step towards the sustainable development of the company. However, performing reliable environmental impact calculations of crushing plants can be challenging when the availability of operational and emission data is low, and when the company’s environmental expertise is not adapted and connected to plant operations (or does not currently exist). To address these challenges, this paper proposes a practical approach where the lifecycle assessment methodology (LCA) is combined with process simulations in a web-based tool. To describe what functionality such a tool should have to be incorporated into a company’s workflow, the system that surrounds a crushing plant is analysed. Further, a case study with a three-stage crushing plant is introduced to showcase how the simulated power draw results produced with the beta version of the tool can be compared to measured sensor data from the crushing plant for one operational day. The results indicate that the simulation tool can provide an adequate estimation of the specific energy for the different material fractions and give an overview of the environmental impact of the process caused by electricity and explosives consumption. Mineral processing produces a saleable product from high-cost ore. The Mineral Processing Engineer must constantly improve the separation to create the most value from the ore and reduce the associated costs. Graduate Metallurgists (or Chemical Engineers) have had the university theoretical training required, but often are illprepared to perform their plant roles. The in-work Metcelerate programme was designed specifically to develop the practical skills that Mineral Process Engineers require, by combining three key elements: 1. Knowledge transfer through self-paced, on-line training; 2. Practical skills acquisition through assessed, practical plant exercises; 3. Skills development through online tutorials. A final process improvement project adds significant value to the operation that far exceeds the training cost. Experience from Metcelerate clients has indicated improved staff retention, greater confidence, and pro-active process intervention.

The Zelazny Most Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) is the largest reservoir of post–flotation tailings in Europe. The total amount of tailings from the mines in Lubin, Rudna, and Polkowice are stored each year at the disposal facility, which reaches approximately 30 million tons. It is crucial to accurately monitor and maintain such a huge storage facility, for the safety and economics of the entire region. In general, the monitoring network installed at the Zelazny Most TSF includes four groups of components: (a) geotechnical network (VW pore pressure transducers and inclinometers), (b) hydrological network (open piezometers, water level gauges, drainage discharge measurements, (c) geodetic survey network (e.g. surface and in-depth benchmarks, laser measurements, GPS measurements within GEOMOS network and (d) seismic network (e.g. accelerometer stations, cone penetration tests.) Apart from the above, chemical water analyses, tests of soil samples, monitoring of spigotting processes, and monitoring of relief wells’ discharge are also conducted. In total, approximately 2900 monitoring instruments are installed within the area of the Zelazny Most TSF. Such large amounts of data from the various information sources makes manual data analysis by the engineers almost impossible. In this paper we discuss a machine learning driven approach to improve the quality of the monitoring and maintenance of such facilities. We focus on the seismic cone penetration test (SCPT) data analysis. First, we carefully describe the collected data, its quality and availability. Then we discuss possible events that can occur in the TSF that need to be predicted using SCPT. Based on the information obtained in these two steps, the applicability of several machine learning methods is estimated. Some of them are then tested on available historical data. The algorithms described in this article will be further developed in the IlluMINEation project (H2020).

South Africa is one of the leading producers and exporters of coal globally. A significant amount of the country’s production is obtained from previously mined underground bord and pillar workings. This coal is in the form of pillars and remnants on the roof and floor of the old workings. The good quality coal pillars were left behind as primary support during underground bord and pillar mining operations. Due to the depletion of virgin coal reserves, the pillars and remnant coal are now removed using opencast mining rather than underground methods. However, the secondary extraction of pillars and remnant coal from the old workings using opencast methods entails some serious challenges that have a negative impact on the safety and productivity of the operations, affecting both personnel and machinery. If these risk factors and challenges are managed properly, then the opencast mining operations could remove the pillars safely at recoveries competitive with those of virgin coal operations. In this study we review the recurring challenges affecting opencast pillar mining by means of field investigations and consultations with experts at five opencast pillar mining operations, and evaluate the best practices used to combat these challenges. It was found that each mine has its own unique conditions and challenges.

The mineral exploration environment has observable economic characteristics, the assessment of which provides guidelines for exploration planning in the mining company. The long-term survival of the mining company is directly dependent on successful exploration. Exploration planning contributes to successful exploration through the development of exploration strategies. The objective of exploration planning is to select exploration environments which will enable the mining company to realize best possible profit and corporate risk conditions. Thus, the formulation of exploration strategies is based on profit and corporate risk criteria. Strategic considerations include the selection of commodities as exploration targets, geographic concentration of exploration effort, the realization of acceptable survival conditions, and the structuring of an exploration programme to optimize the economic benefits of the exploration investment process.

Total bound moisture (TBM) is a typical quality indicator of industrial-grade gypsum. This gypsum is comprised of three distinct phases, namely anhydrite, dihydrate, and hemihydrate, of which only the latter is of much industrial use. TBM analysis is a lengthy laboratory procedure, and an artificial neural network (ANN) TBM inference measurement is proposed as a fast and online alternative. An ANN inference model for gypsum TBM based on plant data was developed. The inputs to the network were primarily focused on the plant's calciner, and different network topologies, data divisions, and transfer functions were investigated. Furthermore, the applicability of the TBM value as a quality indicator was investigated based on a gypsum phase analysis. A strong correlation between TBM and the gypsum hemihydrate and anhydrite content was found, validating the plant target TBM of 5.8% as a quality indicator. A network topology consisting of one hidden layer with logarithmic-sigmoid (logsig) and pure linear (purelin) transfer functions showed the best performance (R > 90%).
