"The discovery of large deposits of polyhalite (K2S04.MgS04.2CaSO4.2H2O) in Texas has led to an investigation of possible industrial proecsses for the extraction of potash from this material. This mineral was first discovored in small quantities in the European potash deposits in or about the year 1800. Chemists fire thought it to be a form of calcium sulphate, but a more accurate analysis by Strohmiyer indicated the composition as given by the above formula.The decomposition of polytalite by aster is very slow and results in the formation of a layer of gypsum at the surface of the polyhalite which retarts the solution of the potaseium and magnesium sulphates. To obtain a substantial yield of K2S04 in solution it is necessary to use large amounts of water at room temperature, for he concentration of K2S04 is limited by the low solubility of syngonite (K2S04.CaS04.H2O) whereas at 100º C. several days boiling are necessary to obtain more than a 6 per cent K2S04 solution even when finely powdered polyhalite is employed.In 1854 H. Rose discovered that calcination, followed by leaching with water, resulted in a larger extraction of the potassium and magnesium sulphates, as compared with leaching without precalcination. During the course of a series of investigations concerning formation of oceanic salt deposits, Van't Hoff and his pupils obtained sufficient data to construct the equilibrium diagram for the system K+Mg+SO4--Ca++.H2O for 25° C. and for 83° C. These data are very well summarized. in the International Critical Tables' and by Boeke and Eitel. From a consideration of the diagrams for 83º C. one would conclude that an extraction of polyhalite with moderate amounts of water at 33º C. would result in a solution whose maximum concentration of K2So4 would be about 3.6 grams per 100 grams of water and of M2SO; about 4.0 grams per 100 grams of water, corresponding to equilibriumwith the solid phases: Polyhalite potassiam-calcium pentasulphate and anhydrite.The fact that it has been found possible to obtain as high as 11.4 grams of K2S04 per 100 grams of water (see table 6) and an equivalent amount of MgSo4 (8.1 grams per 100 grams of water was obtained corresponding to a ratio K2/Mg of 0.98; indicates that the formation of these complex salts is very slow. To be sure, this results was obtained at 100° C. instead of 83º C. However, the work of Anderson and Nestall 9 on the double salts of calcium and potassium sulphates at 100º C. indicates that the diagram at 100º C. C. would not be greatly different from that at 83º C. This slow rate of approach to equilibrium when combined with precalcination of,of polyhzli-,a is the 17,asis of some of the more p:olisinE methods of extracting potash from polyhalite."

A technique of seismic refraction data analysis has been developed in which a digital computer is used to generate a two-dimensional model representing a layered-earth depth interpretation. Travel times are picked on seismic records by the human interpreter. These times, together with shot point and geophone locations and refraction layer control information, are submitted to the computer on punched cards. A first approximation delineation of each refraction horizon is obtained by a computer adaptation of the delay-time method. The approximation is then tested and improved by the computer through the use of a ray-tracing procedure in which ray travel times computed for the model are compared against field-measured travel times. The model is subsequently adjusted in an iterative manner so as to minimize the discrepancy between computed and measured travel times. The Fortran program is listed in the appendix of the report together with instructions for preparing data cards and examples of results.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines publication is an analysis of underground coal mine fire incidents occurring in the United States during the 15years from 1978 through 1992. The fire data used in this analysis were obtained from U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration mine fire investigation reports. Fires were analyzed by year, State, coalbed thickness, mine size, mining method, ignition source, burning substance, location, equipment involved, detection method, time of day, time of year, number of injuries and fatalities, method of extinguishment, and evacuation measures taken. In all, 164 fires are included in this report, or an average of 10.8 fires per year. The most fires occurred in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, respectively. However, the fire incidence rates for these States, expressed as the number of fires per million tons of coal mined, were the lowest, second lowest, and fourth lowest of all underground coal producing States. The most common ignition source was electricity; the most common burning substance was coal; the most frequent fire location was the belt entry; the most common equipment involved in fires was the conveyor belt; and the most common extinguishing agent was water.

Highwall mining continues to grow in importance as a coal production method from U.S. surface mines. It may account for as much as 4% of the total U.S. coal production, according to one recent estimate. Analysis of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident and injury statistics shows that, overall, highwall mining has maintained an admirable safety record. Its fatality and injury rates are comparable to those for other surface mining methods, and are significantly lower than those for underground mining. No mining method is risk free, however. Highwall mining injuries have been associated with handling materials, slips and falls, machinery, powered haulage, and other types of incidents. But perhaps the greatest risk, to both personnel and equipment, is from ground control. The two most significant ground control hazards are rock falls from the highwall and equipment entrapment underground. Highwall Stability Ensuring highwall stability through proper ground control engineering is of paramount importance to safe highwall mining operations. The only fatality to occur during the last five years at a highwall mining operation was due to highwall collapse. There have also been numerous near-misses, several of which have involved extensive damage to equipment. In the central Appalachians, where the majority of highwall mining occurs in the U.S., hillseams are the most prominent geologic structures that affect highwall stability. Hillseams (or mountain cracks) are near vertical fractures in the rock that are formed in response to natural weathering and erosion of hillsides. They extend hundreds of feet down from the surface. They typically run parallel to the hillside, but they can also extend across narrow points or ridge lines. The hazard arises when rock slabs that form along the hillseams detach and fall away from the highwall face (See Figure 1). [ ] Unfortunately, it is impossible to control the location of hillseams or reliably detect their presence within a highwall. There are, however, a number of measures that can be taken to minimize the risk of failure associated with hillseams: Planning-Most operators choose to skip those areas of the highwall where a prominent hillseam daylights (See Figure 2). Existence of such areas is known for several weeks in advance of highwall mining; therefore, planning engineers can adjust the layout of highwall mining panels to locate barrier pillars within areas of questionable highwall stability. [ ] Inspection and monitoring-Daily inspection of the benches above the active highwall mining area is a prudent precautionary measure. A crack in a bench immediately above a highwall miner is shown in Figure 3. Simple displacement monitors may be useful for detecting movement along cracks that may precede a significant life-threatening failure. New tools, such as slope monitoring radar, may also prove useful in detecting motion of the rock slopes above active highwall mining operations. Good blasting practice-Most surface coal miners in the central Appalachians use pre-splitting and the familiar halfbarrels are routinely seen throughout the pits. Shorter delays along the face and longer delays between rows can direct more of the blast force parallel to the face, potentially doing less damage to the wall rock. In addition to pre-splitting, decreasing the burden, spacing and charge weight in drill holes close to the highwall will also decrease damage to the wall rock. Decreasing the highwall slope angle-Decreasing the highwall slope angle from 90° (vertical) to 70°-80°, especially in areas of known hillseam concentration, could eliminate the hillseam hazard (See Figure 4). "The economic features of coal mining must take into account the drain on the man power. Study over a recent 5-year period reveals an average yearly loss of 2,125 underground men, of whom 1,182 are killed by falls of roof and coal, and according to recent data compiled by the Bureau of Mines it is estimated that 54,000 men sustain lost—time disabling injuries from the same cause.Under normal activity of the mines approximately 50 lives are taken by falls of roof during every 10 days the mines are operated, or 5 persons are killed per day, which, at a compensation charge of $5,000 each, amounts to $25,000 per day. Add to this the similar number killed by causes other than by falls of roof and we have $50,000 as an approximate daily fatality charge for each day the mines operate. On the basis of 200 working days per year, this amounts to the alarming figure of $10,000,000 annually. An investment at 5 per cent to yield this amount would require $200,000,000, which is equivalent to a capital investment of $0.40 per ton of coal, produced annually, on the basis of 500 million tons. These figures apply only to fatalities for which a fixed or stated amount is paid for compensation and do not include the compensation and hospitalization paid for the approximately 103,000 upon whom idleness is enforced by a lost-time disability injury. In one State having an annual production equal to approximately 30 per cent of the total bituminous production of the United States, the most recent data shows that for each fatality there are eight serious injuries causing 60 days or more lost time. The frequency rate of accidents for that State is less than the average for the United States, and so a conservative comparison may be made by using the figures of that State in estimating the total serious injuries, which gives 16,000 as losing 60 days or more. The average number of underground employees in the coal mines of the United States for the past 10 years has been approximately 570,000; the annual underground fatalities amount to approximately 2,000 and non-fatalities to 108,000, or a total of 110,000, which means that one out of every 5.17 employees ,or 19.3 per cent, receives an injury which results in either a fatality or a lost-time disability; this figure in a little over five years will reach a number equivalent to 100 per cent of all underground workmen. Against this is the record of many miners who have worked 25 years or more without a lost—time disability injury, indicating that coal mining is not necessarily productive of injury or death to workers.In the matter of falls of roof, it is found that 85 to 87 per cent of all fatalities occur at the working face, face of a room or entry, or in pillar work. It is at the working face that the greatest roof hazards are encountered, and when about 75 per cent of the underground employees spend approximately 90 per cent of their working hours at the face, it is logical that there is where injury is most likely to occur.Although the roof hazards may vary in different beds of coal, experience has proved that roof hazards can be successfully controlled in all coal mines, essentially regardless of the character of the roof if constant care and attention are given by the management and employees in applying the principle of safety. In almost every mining district some companies maintain an extremely low frequency rate of injury, whereas in the same district with essentially the same roof conditions the opposite is true.A study has recently been made of a number of reports upon fatalities in one district of one of the principal coal—producing States and it showed that 50 lives had been lost at 23 mines as the result of falls of roof or sides. These reports were made by the mine officials, safety engineers, and safety committees and an attempt was made to give both the cause and the person or factor responsible for the fatality. If we consider ergonomics to be an exercise in matching job demands to worker capabilities, one of the principal capabilities we must be concerned with is that of human strength. Our ability to evaluate different characteristics of muscular strength has increased dramatically over the past couple of decades with the development of new and increasingly sophisticated instrumentation. One would think that armed with such advanced techniques, we might be able to develop methods to conclusively identify workers at risk of injury in physically demanding jobs. Unfortunately, this has not yet proven to be the case. Instead, what these instruments have continued to point out is how intricate a function muscular strength really is, and how complicated and ambiguous its relationship is to musculoskeletal injury. While we cannot just use isolated tests of strength to specify precisely who may be at risk of injury, studies have indicated that strength testing can be a useful tool for job design and, under certain circumstances, selection of workers for demanding jobs. However, because strength is such a complex phenomenon, there has often been some confusion regarding the proper application and interpretation of strength tests in ergonomics, especially among persons not thoroughly familiar with the limitations and caveats associated with the available procedures. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss some of the fundamental principles of strength assessment in ergonomics, so that these procedures can be better applied to control the risk of musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace 1.1. What is Strength? (And what are we Measuring?) Many of the complications associated with strength assessment arise from the simple fact that even our most sophisticated machinery does not directly measure the force or tension developed by a muscle in a living person. Instead, we can only observe the consequences of force development by a contracting muscle, or more likely, by a combination of muscles There are many ways in which we can measure the effects of muscular contraction, and the techniques we use can have a dramatic impact on the strength readings we will obtain. Consider the situation illustrated in Figure 1. In this example, the muscle exerts a constant force of 1000 Newtons (N). However, the forces we measure can vary quite dramatically depending on where we place the force cuff - from 167 N if we place it near the wrist to 500 N if we place it near the elbow. Which value should we select as properly representing the muscular strength for this elbow flexion exertion? The preceding example illustrates some important points with regard to strength assessment. Perhaps the most important is that "muscular strength is what is measured by an instrument" (Kroemer et al. 1999). It should also be clear from this example [ ] that two researchers could perform an elbow flexion strength experiqent on the same group of subjects, but if each selected different force cuff positions, they might end up with wildly differing estimates of strength. Differences in the strengths of various muscle groups in the published literature may be the results of differences in the procedures and measurement methods used by the experimenters Thus, it is critical that any strength data presented be accompanied by a detailed account of the manner in which the data were obtained. A few additional points need to be made with regard to the testing of human strength. We must be clear that what we are obtaining in such tests are not a person's maximal strength capability, but their maximal voluntary strength. The voluntary nature of the exertion introduces an unknown, but surely substantial, amount of variability in our measurements of strength. One can imagine two subjects with identical muscular strength capabilities, but with varying levels of motivation or discomfort tolerance, for example. We are likely to observe considerable differences in the voluntary force exerted by the two, but it should be understood that such results may be largely the result of psychological factors, and not differences m muscular strength per se. The important point to be made here is that not only are we unable to directly measure muscular force, what we are able to measure is modified by an invisible filter - a filter subject to a wide variety of influences and which will differ considerably for every person we test To make matters worse, this filter would be expected to change even within a given individual on a given day. From the foregoing discussion, one can perhaps better appreciate some of the difficulties with establishing a definitive relationship between an individual's measured strength and that individual's risk of injury.

During August, two eastern Kentucky coal miners died in a roof fall during retreat mining operations. They had just finished extracting one pillar block and were moving to the next one when the intersection they were standing in collapsed. Regrettably, this was not an isolated incident. Since the end of 2000, there have been 28 ground fall fatalities in U.S. coal mines. Of these, 10 occurred during pillar recovery operations. Although pillar recovery has been associated with about one third of recent ground fall fatalities, it accounts for only about 10% of U.S. underground coal production. Statistically, a coal miner engaged in pillar recovery is several times more likely to be killed in a ground fall than a miner on an advancing section of a longwall. Pillar recovery is dangerous because it creates an inherently unstable situation. Once the pillars are extracted, the roof is expected to cave. Safe pillar recovery does not mean preventing roof collapse, it means ensuring that it only occurs after the miners have completed their work and have left the area. Fortunately, there are a number of proven techniques that can greatty reduce the hazards of pillar recovery. These include better mine planning, improved roof support, and safer work procedures. The goal of this article is to describe the most significant "risk factors" associated with pillar recovery, and prescribe control techniques that, taken together, can reduce the overall risk to miners. The conclusions are based on extensive studies conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) that have included detailed analysis of every fatal retreat mining incident since 1992 (25 incidents resulting in 30 fatalities). Risk reduction strategies for pillar recovery can be divided into three main groups: Global Stability: Prevention of section- wide pillar failure; Local Stability: Prevention of roof falls in the working area; and Work procedures and worker location: Minimizing exposure to hazardous areas.

"This Bureau of Mines publication presents a statistical analysis of official U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) metal and nonmetal mine fire reports from 1950 through 1984, plus accounts of selected nonreportable fires (less than 30 min and no injury) and opinion data on fire hazards from mine safety directors. Fires were analyzed by time trends, ore type, ignition source, burning substance, location in mine, equipment involved, means of detection, duration, number of injuries and fatalities, mining method, and successful extinguishing agent. The leading ignition sources were electricity in underground fires and engine heat in reported surface fires. The most frequent burning substance was combustible liquids for all nonreportable fires, reported surface fires, and reported underground fires from 1978 to 1984. For underground fires reported prior to 1978, timber was the leading burning substance. Mobile equipment was the type most frequently involved in both underground and surface fires. Underground fires occurred most often in haulageway or drift areas, and reported surface fires occurred most often in plant and mill buildings, while most nonreportable surface fires occurred in other areas. The most common methods of extinguishment were water hose lines for reported fires and dry chemical handportable extinguishers for nonreportable fires. INTRODUCTIONIn support of the Bureau of Mines research on mine fire protection, two separate baseline studies on mine fire incidents have been prepared. The first study addressed coal mine fires. The results of that study are summarized in the Bureau's Information Circular 8830, ""A Statistical Analysis of Coal Mine Fire Incidents in the United States From 1950 to 1977."" This second report, addressing metal and nonmetal mine fires, is the companion to IC 8830. Together, these two reports provide a comprehensive, factual summary of the mining industry's fire experience.This report, like IC 8830, covers (1) MSHA fire incident reports, (2) records of nonreportable fires (less than 30 min and no injury), and (3) mine safety directors' opinions on fire hazards. The MSHA fire reports provide the most reliable, objective, and accurate historcial record of the major noncoal mine fires that occurred during the study period (1950 through 1984). However, MSHA fire reports alone understate the true magnitude of the fire problem because metal and nonmetal mines have been legally required to report fires to MSHA only since 1968. Although some fires were reported prior to 1968, doubtless a great many were not. Also, the reporting regulations that took effect in 1968 specify that only fires lasting 30 min or longer or involving an injury need to be reported. MSHA fire reports are thus limited in scope by MSHA's legal authority. In order to provide a more comprehensive data base, it was also necessary to gather and analyze mine company records of nonreportable fires."

"INTRODUCTION This report presents statistics of accidents at coke ovens in the United States during the calendar years as 1933, the twenty-first year for which data of this kind are available, 1913 being the first year for which accident reports were collected from the operating companies by the Bureau of Mines. The present report is presented in mimeograph form because insufficient funds are available for printing it. The first report of the Bureau of Mines that contained statistics of accidents for the coke-mining industry in the United States covered the two calendar years, 1913 and 1914. While the figures presented therein related both to beehive and by-product ovens, the original returns from the operating companies were not classified so as to permit the presentation of accident statistics for each class of ovens separately. Beginning with 1915, the accident reports from the operating companies have shown the general type of ovens to which the reports related; therefore, since that year, separate statistics for each of the two classes of ovens have been given in the Bureau's yearly reports of accidents at coke ovens.The coke-making industry in the United States established a safety record in 1933 almost equal in merit to that which it achieved in 1932, when the accident-frequency rate was the lowest and therefore the most favorable that the industry has known. Credit for the achievement is due almost entirely to companies operating byproduct ovens. (See table 8.)"

This surveillance report summarizes data on work-related fatal and nonfatal injuries, illnesses, and hazardous exposures in the mining industry for the 10-year period 1986-1995. The term "surveillance," as used in public health, may be new to many readers of this report. With regard to occupational safety and health, the goal of surveillance is to describe the occurrence of work-related injuries, illnesses, and known hazardous exposures; to identify new hazards that may occur due to the introduction of new technology or other factors; and to assess the effects of preventive measures designed to improve worker safety and health. Surveillance provides an overall picture, which can be used to focus resources on areas most in need of prevention programs or further research. Surveillance generally requires the use of multiple sources of data, all of which have their own strengths and limitations. Surveillance in the U. S. mining industry is complicated by the fact that U.S. national data systems that provide information on mining are based on two different definitions of the mining industry. One is established by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the other by the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) System [Office of Management and Budget 1987] and the 1980 U. S. Bureau of the Census (BOC) Classification System [U.S. Bureau of the Census 1982]. The mining industry as defined by MSHA is based on the regulatory jurisdiction of that agency. Reporting requirements for injuries, illnesses, and workplace exposures are stipulated under the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 and the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977. Of note is that the oil and gas extraction industry falls outside of MSHA jurisdiction. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was charged with enforcement in the oil and gas industry under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. Under the SIC, the definition of mining covers the extraction of naturally occurring minerals, including liquids (petroleum), gases (natural gas) and solids (coal, metal, and nonmetallic minerals). Exploration and development of mineral properties are also included in the SIC definition of the mining industry. The SIC was developed by the Office of Management and Budget for use in classifying establishments based on the type of economic activity in which they are engaged and serves as the industry classification standard for all establishment based Federal economic statistics. This classification is important for occupational safety and health surveillance because it also serves as the industry classification system for all data on work-related injuries and illnesses collected by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The U.S. Bureau of the Census uses an industry coding scheme similar to that used by the SIC. For the mining industry, the categorization is identical in both systems. Death certificate data made available by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) are categorized under this system. Death certificate data are particularly important for surveillance of mortality from work-related illnesses. Key differences between the SIC/BOC categorization system and the MSHA system can be summarized as follows: • MSHA excludes the oil and gas industry, which is classified as part of the mining industry under SIC/BOC. • MSHA excludes work that is done off of mine property; work off of mine property is included under SIC/BOC if it is performed by an establishment falling into one of the SIC/BOC mining industry codes. • MSHA includes mine-associated mills and processing plants; these are classified under the manufacturing industry, rather than mining, according to the SIC/BOC coding structure. Since the data collected by MSHA and the data collected by BLS and NCHS using the SIC/BOC classification system are both important sources of information on the mining industry and in many cases serve different purposes, data from both systems are presented in this report. In general, data using the SIC/BOC system are comparable across U.S. industries and should be used when comparing mining to other U.S. industries. Much of the data in this report are presented in the form of frequencies or rates. A frequency provides only a count of the number of cases without providing any information about the risk of occurrence. Rates provide an estimate of the risk of injury or illness. The reader is cautioned, however, that rates based on small numbers can be unstable; thus, any inferences should be drawn with care. In this report, no rates are presented for groups in which there were fewer than three cases. The incidence of most injury and illness conditions differs by age, sex, and race. For this reason, data in many surveillance reports are adjusted for these demographic factors. It was not possible to do this for most of the rates in this report because information on demographics was not available. With the exception of the proportionate mortality ratios (PMRs), all data presented are unadjusted. A detailed account of the sources of data is in appendix A. The methods used in data selection and analysis are described in appendix B.

"INTRODUCTION Ethyl mercaptan (CH3,CH2SH), a combustible organic liquid of the thioalcohol type, is employed at an odorant in many types of fuel gases and dangerous atmospheres, which in themselves are devoid of characteristic odors, to give warring against leakage of such gases or atmospheres into places where they might constitute health or explosion hazards.Ethyl mercaptan has a penetrating disagreeable odor resembling that of onions, garlic, hydrogen sulfide, or rotting cabbage, that exceedingly low concentrations of it can be detected. The of odorants as a beans of detecting leakage of gases and atmospheres has been investigated extensively by chemists and engineers of the Bureau of Mines, and numerous reports as to its value have been published."

The hazard to health from contamination of air by a noxious gas depends not only on the potential harmful response attending exposure., but also on the warning properties, which in effect may be termed the "accompanying warning response," This warning may be manifested as an odor, taste, irritation of the eyes, nose, or throat, or perhaps headache, vertigo,, or nausea. These manifestations may be painful and even slightly harmful, but to a much lesser degree than the primary injury of exposure. The warning response mitigates hazards directly in proportion to the degree of intolerability which -accompanies injurious exposure, and accordingly its absence augments hazards. This accounts for the fact that the actual health hazards from a nonodorous or non-irritating gas or vapor of comparatively low toxicity sometimes equal or exceed the hazard from a considerably more toxic substance, but one which possesses a marked odor or produces eye, nose, or throat irritation in advance of harmful exposure. When a substance lacks the properties for giving warning, it is often possible to impart them by the addition of a small amount of another substance which has an exceedingly high warning intensity. The vapors of this substance, commonly termed a "warning agent" or "tracer gas," escape and mingle with the gas or vapor which lacks warning properties and thereby apprises persons of the latter's presence. The amount of the warning agent added is that which will give adequate warning in advance of serious physiological harm from the dangerous gas or vapor.

Results of the analyses of 151 crude oils from 123 oilfields in the Williston basin are presented. Production statistics are compiled by geographical areas within the basin, by geological age of the producing zones, by States, and by field for the nine fields with the greatest production. Characteristics of the oils are tabulated, and correlations are included to show relationships between properties of the oils and some factors in the environment. Properties of the oils in some instances imply that there has been migration and mixing of the oils between productive formations of different geological time periods.

"INTRODUCTION AND CONCLUSIONSThe first three reports of investigations 5/ in this series, pertaining to the investigation of stemming at the Mount Weather Testing Adit dealt with the dust produced by blasting, the effect of stemming on gases generated by blasting, and the relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of stemming and no stemming when used with 60-percent ammonia gelatin dynamite.This report covers an investigation of the length of stemming material through which a primer will fire and detonate a charge of dynamite, such as a missed hole.The practice of drilling a new hole a foot from a missed hole to blast out the missed hole should be prohibited. It is dangerous, as is evidenced by the number of miners killed through drilling into missed holes. It is even more hazardous in a mine on a multiple-shift basis, in which the same miners do not drill succeeding rounds."

The cause of many deaths and extensive property damage in coal mines resulting from explosions and mine fires has been directly attributable to electric cable failures (including splice failures). The Federal Bureau of Mines data show that out of 355 underground coal mine fires investigated from July 1952 to January 1960, 103 (29 percent) were directly related to trailing cables. These cable failures resulted in the death of 7 men and injuries to 37 others. These potential hazards have become greater, obviously, through the widespread adoption of mechanized mining methods with electric-driven machinery powered through trailing cables according to Young,4 68.1 percent of the total bituminous and lignite production of the United States was mined underground in 1959. About 85 percent of this production was attained by mechanized loading methods. A large majority of the mines using the hand- loading methods also used equipment with trailing cables such as cutting machines, drills, and gathering locomotives. The problem of minimizing the loss of life, resources, and equipment from cable failures should be of concern to the management of all coal mines. It would be misleading to imply that no consideration has been given to the problem and its associated hazards. Through research cable manufacturers have endeavored to develop trailing cables that will withstand the severe service imposed by underground mining conditions. Technical research groups have undertaken studies for determining improved procedure and materials for field splices. Coal companies have instituted cable maintenance programs with a view toward the reduction of cable failures and consequent improvement in safety and efficiency of operations. An accurate characterization of the vibration environment and a vibration qualification test derived from it will be a very useful tool for manufacturers of instrumentation for use on underground coal mining equipment. Recognizing this, the Bureau of Mines sponsored a study wherein vibration levels were measured on mining equipment to form a basis for developing the required vibration test. The data base was composed of 160 samples taken at different positions on a variety of underground machinery. The data were analyzed and presented in a format typical of military vibration qualification tests. The form was shown to be virtually identical to the swept sine test envelope specified in MIL-STD-810B for tracked vehicles.

Although the Stamler feeder/breaker has been used for coal crushing in underground mines for many years, it has only recently been applied to other crushing operations. Two companies presently using Stamler feeder/breakers for rock crushing were contacted regarding their experiences with the units in actual field use. In both cases information was obtained directly from the individuals responsible for field operation and maintenance of the units. White Pine Copper Co. has been using Stamler feeder/breakers for over two years to crush copper ore. They now have fourteen 450-ton-per-hour units on line. The ore has a compressive strength of from 18,000 to 28,000 psi and is extremely abrasive. Maintenance is performed on a tonnage basis. The breaker shaft is replaced every 250,000 tons (requiring about 4 hrs) and picks are replaced about every 1500 tons by the operator (requiring about 2 min per pick). Very little unscheduled maintenance has been required. Crushing costs are fairly high (estimated at 13 to 15t per ton including maintenance and operation) because of tale extreme abrasiveness of the material. A new Stamler feeder/breaker with Ultramet wear surfaces was put or line in June 1976. Ultramet was found to increase the life of belt transfer station surfaces by up to 400 percent and it is hoped that it will do the same for the feeder/breaker. At this time it is still too early to evaluate the performance of the Ultramet unit. If it does improve abrasion resistance, crushing costs could be greatly reduced. White Pine is very pleased with the units and the service provided by Stamler.

Research conducted by the Bureau of Mines demonstrated the feasibility of preparing columbium and tantalum metals by the application of Kroll-process techniques. Yields in excess of 95 percent were obtained in a modified Kroll-process reduction apparatus constructed from nickel and Inconel.4 Operating conditions during reduction and distillation were determined. Optimum temperatures during sodium reductions ranged from 650° to 750° C and for magnesium from 700° to 800° C with retort pressures ranging from 3 to 7 psig. Undesirable vapor phase reactions occurred when temperatures exceeded 750° C during sodium reductions or 850° C with magnesium. Vacuum distillation at 850° C effectively removed volatile salts and excess reductant from the reduced metals. Calculations based on the results obtained in small scale tests indicate that reaction rates of up to 34 lb/hr could be obtained during columbium reductions and up to 60 lb/hr during tantalum reductions in production scale reac¬tors. The small, laboratory-scale techniques used in this study could be adapted to commercial practice. The reduced powder or sponge metals can be consolidated by conventional arc-melting techniques, and the arc-melted metals can be fabricated into ductile sheet at room temperature. Analyses of arc-melted buttons prepared from Kroll-process tantalum or columbium showed that tantalum of greater than 99.8-percent purity was obtained and that columbium purity exceeded 99.7 percent. A significant purification of the reduced metals occurred when they were consolidated by electron-beam melting, and the purity and ductility of electron-beam-melted Kroll-process tantalum and columbium compared favorably with the commercial metals. After electron-beam melting, the purity of the tantalum exceeded 99.95 percent, and columbium purity was approximately 99.9 percent.

This report describes the results of a measurement and analysis program to characterize wireless radio transmission in metal/non-metal mines over a wide frequency range from 0.2 - 1000 MHz and over a variety of mine environments. Six mines were chosen based on the relative economic significance of their product to the U.S. economy. Mine types include oil shale, uranium, potash, lead/zinc, copper, and silver. Particular mines were chosen so that the group would embody the most important mining techniques. The results show that transmission at medium frequencies are optimum for wireless mine communications, in agreement with extensive testing previously performed by the authors In coal mines, and that mine-wide wireless systems are feasible with a minimum requirement for new dedicated wiring. At least one need for such a wireless system was identified in each mine visited.

Those of the oil-shale operators in this country who are sincerely attempting to make a real industry out of oil-shale developments, are anxious to obtain fundamental data on the retorting of oil-shale; particularly as regards the effect of certain variable factors in the process of retorting on the quantity and quality of products yielded from oil shales when they are subjected to destructive distillation. From careful examination of a con siderable number of suggested processes for treating oil shales and the con flicting ideas on which they are designed, it seems probable that accurate information of a fundamental nature is highly essential to the successful establishment of an oil-shale industry in this country. . Accordingly, the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the State of Colorado, is undertaking to furnish some definite and impartial information of this type through investigations now under way at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo. A retort for the distillation of oil from oil shale has been designed and installed, together with the necessary auxiliary equipment for controlling and determining variable factors of distillation, and for recovering and de termining the quantity and quality of the products yielded from the shales. The retort is of such a nature that conditions of retorting can be accurately . and completely controlled, and varied at will. It is not designed as a com mercial retort, but only for research purposes. A testing laboratory with equipment necessary for the examination of the shales, physically and chemic ally, and the products yielded by them, has also been fitted up . The material used in the investigations is oil shale obtained from the DeBeque, Colorado, shale field. It yields on distillation in the Bureau of Mines testing apparatus, about 42 gallons of oil to the ton, and is there fore a fairly representative sample of the shales that probably will be first worked in Colorado. The shale used will be as uniform as possible in character and oil yield and will all be obtained from the same seam at the same point, in order to avoid the introduction of unnecessary variable factors in the tests and to render results strictly comparable •
