A recently completed survey , made by the Bureau of Mines to determine the trend of fuel consumption at refineries in the United States , showed the following outstanding points : A decrease in the use of oil for fuel in 1927 of over 5,000,000 barrels as compared with 1926 ; a decrease in the use of coal of over : 1,000,000 short tons ; small increases in the use of both natural gas and refinery gas ; an increase in the use of petroleum coke . The decrease in fuel - oil consumption was approximately 2,000,000 barrels each in the Atlantic Coast , Texas , and Louisiana- Arkansas districts , with an increase of 1,000,000 barrels in the Indiana - Illinois district , or a net decrease of 5,000,000 barrels . The decrease in fuel- oil consumption by refineries in the Texas and Louisiana- Arkansas areas was offset largely by increased consumption of natural gas and refinery gas , whereas the increased consumption in the Indiana- Illinois region was more than offset by the decrease in coal consumption . The use of coal for fuel declined from 6,052,000 short tons in 1926 to 5,031,000 short tons in 1927. Practically all of this decrease was recorded in the Appalachian and Indiana- Illinois districts , which at the same time showed the largest percentage increase in the use of oil for fuel . It is probable , therefore , that although coal prices also fell off , a considerable quantity of oil replaced coal in this area in 1927. In addition , the group of refineries , which are by location more or less definitely committed to the use of coal for fuel , undoubtedly succeeded in saving a material amount of coal through the use of more efficient fueling methods . A total of 130,815,000,000 cubic feet of natural gas was consumed for fuel at refineries in 1927. This represents an increase of 8 per cent over the 1926 total . Nearly all of this increase resulted from the opening of a line from the Monroe field to Baton Rouge , La . Had this line not been opened , there would have been a decrease in the use of natural gas , as a number of districts , particularly the Rocky Mountain , reported decreases in its use . The use of refinery or still gases for fuel did not change materially during 1927 , there being a total of 52,807,000,000 cubic feet burned as compared with 52,077,000,000 cubic feet in 1926. Refinery gases are largely a product of cracking and , it was probably more than a coincidence that a few districts in which cracking slowed down in 1927 also reported less refinery gas used as fuel .

The Bureau of Mines has conducted desorption work on fine coal particles at near atmospheric pressure. An apparatus Iris been developed that uses a capacitance manometer to measure desorption of methane from coal particles up to, 2 inches in diameter and pressures up to 1,000 psi. This will make it possible to duplicate the desorption process as it occurs in its natural underground environment.

[The Bureau of Mines initiated an extensive research on coal-mine ventilation factors in 1922, large- scale tests being conducted in its experimental nine near Bruceton, Pa., over a period of two years. A comprehensive report an this work is in course of preparation, but in order to place the practical results before the mining fraternity immediately and in condenses form, the more important features will be presented in a number of short papers. The present report is the first of a series dealing with the resistance of coal-mine entries to the flow of air and considers only entries in which there are no obstructions other than the natural roughness of the ribs, roof, and floor.]

"INTRODUCTION The Ward copper deposit was brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines in September 1943 by John J. Knob, 217 E. Penn Street, Long Beach, N. Y. At that time all Bureau of Mines work on Seward Peninsula was being directed to the exploration of deposits of tin, a metal high on the strategic list. It was not until September 1946 that the Bureau could make a preliminary examination of the Ward prospect.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. The Allah Cooper mine, in Louisa County, Va., formerly was a producer of lead and zinc. It was believed that the critical shortage of leach and zinc and the fact that some ore had been produced at this mine justified exploration of it. A preliminary examination was made on April 30, 1943, by J. E. Hill, a Bureau of Mines Engineer. Diamond drilling was done on the property from November 30 to December 18, 1943, to determine whether the sulfide body extended to depth. One hole drilled to a depth of 650 feet and located so as to cut the Allah Cooper ore shoot about 150 feet below the lowest known mine workings failed to disclose sulfide vein at that depth.

"While control of dust-related diseases, the objective of the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust, is of prime importance from the human standpoint it is also essential to the economic well-being of the mining industry (FIGURE 23). Although significant progress has been made, the problem continues to be a major concern to the mining community. An increasing global demand for coal and other minerals means that production and the number of miners employed is on the rise. Therefore, the importance of this research to the mining industry cannot be overemphasized.The five areas of dust research are 1) control of dust generation, 2) dilution, dispersion and collection of dust in mine airways, 3) characterization of dust particles, 4) interaction of dust and lungs, 5) relationship of mine environment, geology, and seam characteristics to dust generation and mobility. Some experimental projects where the research is conducted almost exclusively in the laboratory may still rely on industry for imput. No industrial resources are necessary to the research of the non-experimental projects, for example computer modeling .The remaining research is classified as experimental and these projects do require interaction with industry in varying degrees. Periodic trips to mining sites in Western Pennsylvania, Southern Ohio, and West Virginia are necessary to record measurements or collect samples. Or companies may provide needed samples or equipment to the university for use in the laboratory. On several projects interaction is limited to advice or information supplied to the researcher by industry personnel."

"This study reports a new property of the important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes, glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin- NADP oxidoreductase, that can catalyze a one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V). During the enzymatic reduction process, molecular oxygen is reduced to H2O 2 , which reacts with the reduced metal complexes to generate hydroxyl radicals. Since the hydroxyl radicals have been suggested to play an important role in Cr(VI) toxicity, this study provides a basis for a recent observation that Cr(VI) mutagenesis is strongly oxygen dependent. These results also point to an enzymatic pathway for the metabolism of some metal ions and concomitant generation of hydroxyl radicals. l. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this communication is to report that some important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes (glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase) can catalyze one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V) and simultaneously reduce molecular oxygen to generate Hi02 and, eventually, the ""OH radical. This finding is significant because (i) the known substrates for the flavoenzymes are organic species and not metal ions, and (ii) the report on the enzymatic formation of the ""OH radical provides a new pathway for understanding the mechanism of genotoxicity of some non-ferrous metal ions. For example, it has been suggested that OH radical is likely to be the major species responsible for Cr(VI) genotoxicity [1-5). The 'OH radical is generated through the reaction of Cr(V) complexes with cellular Hi02 [4,5]. Cr(V) itself is known to be generated from Cr(VI) in various biological systems, in particular, microsomes [ 6), mitochondria [7] and mitochondrial electron transfer chain complexes [8]. However, no specific enzyme responsible for the Cr(V) generation has been identified except possibly glutathione reductase [4]. In this study we have used ESR and spin trapping techniques to show that the flavoenzymes can generate Cr(V) and provide a catalytic redox cycle for 'OH formation in such reactions. A gas volumetric method was developed for determining metallic aluminum at the 0.01-to 0.3-percent level in 100-gram samples of recycled glass. The method is based on the measurement of the change in gas volume produced by the reaction 2 Al + 2 NaOH + 2 H2O ? 2 NaAl02 + 3 H2 using a simple apparatus assembled from readily available glassware. Apart from sampling errors, the precision of the method is within ±5 percent. A minor modification of the apparatus would extend the method to larger samples or samples of higher metallic aluminum content. Metallic iron and metallic zinc do not interfere at the concentrations found in recycled glass recovered from incinerator residues.

An investigation was conducted to evaluate the use of a formcoke as the total fuel in the Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace. The formcoke performed very satisfactorily, and comparisons made with a metallurgical coke showed that the performance with the formcoke was somewhat superior under the experimental conditions used.

The objective of the research reported in this publication of the Federal Bureau of Mines was to devise a mineral dressing procedure that would concentrate zinc silicate minerals from certain deposits in southwestern Missouri. The best flotation results were obtained by batch laboratory flotation using sulfidizing agents and ethoxylated cocoamine. The flotation concentrate contained 70 percent of the zinc at a grade of 47.8 percent. Gravity concentration tests showed that 55 percent of the zinc could be recovered at a grade of 48.3 percent.

"The House/Senate Joint Conference Committee has instructed the Bureau of Mines to have the Advisory Committee on Mining and Mineral Resources Research review on an annual and simultaneous basis each generic mineral technology research center (GMTC). In order to accomplish that review promptly and uniformly, committee members have revised and approved an in-depth questionnaire. That document formed the basis of their review. The information provided by that questionnaire was an important factor in their recommendations concerning the future direction of the program; a presentation was made at the last National Plan Update.The comprehensive nature of the questionnaire and the scope of the information contained therein make it an excellent retrospective of the Center. Having a clear vision of where the Center has been and knowing where it is now will help guide it into the future. It is felt that such a detailed view of the Center's facilities and research program will be of value to Center personnel and Advisory Committee members.Each aspect of the questionnaire has been examined, answered in detail, and documented throughly. With the completed questionnaire as a guide, this volume examines the research program, Center personnel presently active on GMTC projects, number of graduate degrees granted with GMTC support, GMTC publications, degree of individual interaction, technology transfer, the reference center, GMTC equipment and facilities, and any envisioned plans for future research. It is hoped that this volume will serve as a review of the years 1984-1988, the first four years of the Center's operation."

"INTRODCJCTIONAlveolar macrophages are free lung cells located on the surface of small airways and alveoli. These phagocytes play an important role in the protection of the lung against airborne bacteria and particles.1 However, hyperactivation of pulmonary phagocytes can lead to excessive secretion of enzymes and reactive oxygen species which could result in lung injury, emphysema, or fibrosis.2,3 Analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage effluents for cell types and cellular activity has yielded information concerning the etiology of various pneumoconioses. For example, emphysema associated with inhalation of coal dust or cigarette smoke has been related to enhanced secretion of reactive oxygen species from alveolar macrophages.4-7 In contrast, hypoactivation of alveolar macrophages has been associated with inhalation of diesel particulates"" and has been related to increased susceptibility to pulmonary infection. s Inhalation of cotton dust has been associated with dramatic increases in lavagable polymorphonuclear leukocytes9 while pulmonary sarcoidosis and silicosis have been related with high numbers of lymphocytes in lavage effluentsl0,11The objective of the present study was to obtain lavage effluents from 8 control subjects, 8 healthy power plant workers exposed to fly ash, 1 healthy coal miner, and 1 rock driller with acute silicosis. These effluents were analyzed for total numbers of alveolar macrophages, lymphocytes and neutrophils and for secretory activity of alveolar macrophages. Data were then analyzed to determine what response patterns were characteristic for given dust exposures.METHODSSelection of SubjectsThe 8 control subjectS were all adult males from the area of Morgantown, WV. Two subjects among the controls had smoked cigarettes for approximately three pack-years and had stopped more than ten years ago. The 8 power plant :workers were all healthy adult male employees of a power facility in Hatfield, PA, approximately thirty miles from Morgantown. One of the power plant personnel was a comparable ex-smoker. The remaining subjects were all lifelong non-smokers. The coal miner was a healthy non-smoking male from Morgantown, WV. The rock driller was a patient under treatment with corticosteroids for acute silicosis. He had shown considerable clinical improvement with this treatment but still manifested significant radiologic and pulmonary functional abnonnalities at the time of lavage. The mean age of the 8 control subjects was 36 years (range: 31 to 49 years); the mean age of the remaining subjects studied was 38 years (range: 29 to 53 years)."

The factor of safety, the traditional measure of stability for earth embankments, is graphically presented in factor of safety charts in this Bureau of Mines report. Factor of safety contours are drawn for homogeneous earth embankments for two contrasting situations: (1) no phreatic surface and (2) a phreatic surface that assumes 10-pct freeboard. The factor of safety can be read directly from the charts if the physical properties of the soil and the geometry of the embankment are known. The curves provide a quick first approximation of the "most stable" and "least stable" condition of the embankment. The Simplified Bishop Method was used for the safety factor calculations, and a sequence of least squares curve fitting steps was used to present the factor of safety in final chart form.

Cost System The cost system reported here is a suite of computer programs which incorporates the logic and information flow structure as outlined in earlier chapters. Specifically, computer programs have been devel¬oped to: 1. compute labor, operating, and capital costs, 2. summarize cost and production data, and 3. compute the minimum acceptable selling price for coal. While the cost system can be executed independently, it is de¬signed primarily for use with the Master Design Simulator and there¬fore must conform to the overall system hardware. The computer model is written in Fortran IV for use with the IBM System 360/370 computers as well as with compatible units such as the Univac 1110 and CDC-6600. For ease in error detection and program modification, the model was constructed with a main routine and eight subroutines. The main routine reads and stores the data necessary for the cost computations and calls the subroutines in logical sequence. The subroutines perform the cost computations and data adjustments for reporting purposes. Each subroutine performs the cost computations for its particular com¬ponent of the cost cycle. The program operations are described in the following narrative outline. Control Subsystem As previously described, the main routine is a passive element, reading and storing input data and directing execution to the active subroutines for cost calculations. "A fundamental study of fragment size distribution and characteristics of fracture pattern is presented for the dynamic penetration of a conical bit into coal block. In this paper, damaged zones during crater formation and fragment size distribution were studied. Bit with a sharper tip angle and a smooth body configuration performed better penetration. Results suggest that in coal cutting the trend should be toward the face cleat direction using a sharper angled tip bits which consumes less energy for an optimum range of penetration depths, thus attaining maximum cutting efficiency and reducing fine fragments.1. INTRODUCTIONMuch research in the past has been done on energy requirements and mechanism of energy dissipation for ideal rock fragmentation in cutting process. However the mechanisms of energy dissipation or failure criteria for rocks in cutting process in order to evaluate the efficiency of energy requirements in specific rock fragmentation is not well understood. The formation of a crater in rock under the impact blow of a bit has been observed experimentally (Hartman, 1959). It is known that directly beneath the edge of the bit the rock is crushed into fine powder, toward the sides of the crater it chips out into relatively large fragments. (Sikarskie & Cheatham, 1973). Singh et al. (1967) investigated the cratering process under the two different conditions of static and dynamic loading. They found that the amount of energy consumed per unit volume of crater is unequal for the two different loading conditions. A complex network of fractures often extends downward and laterally into the rock below the bit. The surface of the specimens showed that the dynamic loading damaged larger area then the static loading."

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYDuring the latter part of 1943 a magnetometric survey was conducted by the Geophysical Division of the Bureau of Mines at the mine, Putnam County, N. Y., in an endeavor to locate a segment of the body that reports state was cut off by a fault. The Mahepac mine was abandoned about 1895 after producing nearly 1,000,000 tons of high-grade magetite iron ore. The results of the investigation indicate the termination of the ore body by ""pinching"" or a displacement of such magnitude as to place any extension at a considerable distance the original ore body. This report describes the work done on the project and presents the data obtained. ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States and Alaska since 1939. The Mahopac mine was visited by W.T. Millar, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, on June 5, 1943, accompanied by Dr. William Agar of the Federal Survey, and again on July 29, 1943, accompanied by Dr. A. F. Buddington and H.F. During the spring of 1944, the Bureau of Mines investigated the Crescent mine area near the village of Rewey, Iowa County, Wis., as part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin. The work was done when every effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the Nation's war program. The Bureau of Mines completed 24 churn-drill holes in an area immediately to the west of a mineralized section which had been mined through shallow workings for lead and zinc more than 40 years earlier.

Rock-dusting is an. effective means of preventing coal-dust from propagating an explosion in a coal mine, but it will not prevent gas from igniting-explosively and with much attendant damage locally. Ventilation must therefore be effective at all times, regardless of the employment of other explosion-prevention methods, if gas explosions are to be avoided. This paper describes a gas explosion which occurred in as bituminous mine that was well rock-dusted at the point of ignition and which exemplifies the value of rock-dusting, the necessity of maintaining effective ventilation, and the need of permissible rock-dusting machines receiving power from a permissible locomotive. Description of Explosion The mine in which this explosion occurred is developed on a panel system in a practically level seam; the panel entries are driven in pairs, and the air current intakes on the right entry and returns on the left entry. Near the mouth of the intake a door is placed to control the ventilation; board stoppings are placed in crosscuts, except the second from the face, in which a brattice cloth curtain is hung, the last crosscut is left open and line brattices conduct the air current from the last crosscut to the faces. In No. 7 entry the last cross-cut was 152 feet from the face, the line brattice being within 38 feet of this face, and the second crosscut was 250 feet outby the face of the back entry or return. Seven days prior to the explosion the intake and return entries were rock-dusted to within 38 feet of the face, and as the entry had advanced during the week, the rock-dusting was to be extended.

A process for the manufacture of high-Btu gas from coal has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The process consists of fluid-bed gasification of the coal, followed by the gas treatment steps of gas purification and methanation. Advantages of the system are that caking coals can be used directly, and more than half of the ultimate methane is made in the gasifier.
