Dewatering fine particles (e.g., flotation concentrates) is inefficient, energy intensive and often requires large capital and operating costs. To address these issues, a series of advanced dewatering technologies have been developed at Virginia Tech. These include novel dewatering aids and a hyperbaric centrifuge. Typically, the moistures obtained using these methods are 30% to 50% lower than those obtained using conventional methods, as demonstrated in laboratory and pilot-scale test programs. With another novel dewatering technology that has been tested in bench-scale tests, the moistures can be reduced to levels once believed to be attainable only through the use of thermal dryers. In this communication, test results obtained with these advanced dewatering technologies are presented and compared.

Electrowinning of lead from aqueous solution of PbCl2 and electrowinning of manganese dioxide from aqueous solution of MnCl2 are two research focuses in hydrometallurgy. This paper investigated a new process of simultaneous electrowinning of lead and manganese dioxide in chloride medium. The simultaneous electrowinning process in chloride solution not only can prevent chloride from liberating at anodes but also obtain two electrolysis products and decrease electric energy consumption. Diaphragm cell is used in the simultaneous electrowinning process to form separate anode and cathode compartment. The effects of temperature, HCl concentration in anolyte, NaCl concentration in catholyte and electrolysis time on current efficiency and cell voltage are studied. The results indicate that current efficiency of anode and cathode for 5 hours is 99% and 96% respectively, average cell voltage is 1. 701V, the weight ratio of lead and manganese dioxide produced at electrodes is 2. 39:1 under the optimum conditions. As anode products, manganese dioxide is ??MnO2, content of which in the products is more than 92%.

An attempt to produce fuel from biomass waste by hydrothermal treatment has been made with expectation to effectively utilize a renewable source of energy and an unexploited energy resource. In this paper, we have used empty fruit bunch (EFB) that is a residue after recovery of crude palm oil from palm oil trees in a plantation in a tropic country. A hydrothermal treatment was conducted using a 500 mL autoclave, with alkali (K2CO3) catalyst. EFB was decomposed more by alkali catalyst of lower alkali content and rather polymerized in higher catalytic region. The functional group composition of the solid phase oil is similar independent of alkali content, however its burning characteristic became more incombustible with increasing alkali content.

Often plans to increase plant throughput provide an opportunity for optimising plant equipment and operating methods. This was the case in 2005 at TISCO Jianshan Iron Mine, when an increase in production was planned. The thickening circuit had presented a limitation to the plant throughput and operation with poor overflow clarity and underflow density. Following a course of test work by Outotec, a 53m diameter Supaflo® High Rate Thickener (HRT) was selected for the duty. From early stages of operation of the new thickener, the benefits have been dramatic, including: ? Improved tailings underflow density by 9% ? Improved Overflow clarity to less than 150ppm ? Considerably decreased the water and energy consumption as well as operation cost ? Stable and reliable operation This paper looks at this installation as a case study and compares the previous thickener installa-tion performance with the performance of the single 53m HRT.

This paper presents the consequences of modernization and expansion of process plant by implementing SAG and Ball Mill and Carbon-in-pulp technology at the Hutti Gold Mine. From the inception of the process plant, it has undergone many changes for the improvement. In the beginning, only gravity recovery of gold was carried out by using Pebble Mills and Strake Tables. Later amalgamation, Cyanidation and Zinc precipitation and finally Carbon-in-pulp gold recovery system was implemented. Grinding plant was modernized by implementing SAG and Ball Mill and Knelson concentrator for free gold recovery as a result, the production rate, rate of recovery, reduced man power, Modernization and expansion of process plant has also yielded in safe and smooth running of the plant. The present paper is about the restoration of the molybdenum production in the floatation plant of Ellatzite-Med AD in Bulgaria. The process, based on a working design, includes the construction of a new floatation molybdenum section in the existing molybdenum department of the Floatation Plant using the so called Vemco inert-gas floatation machines, made especially for the molybdenum floatation. While in the ordinary floatation machines, block impellers create suspension of the air, sucked from the atmosphere with the slime particles of the concentrate, which creates conditions for oxidizing the reagent, Vemco inert-gas floatation machines are covered with hermetic lids and the air inside the chamber is used. The technology, suggested by Geotechkoper Ltd. for making the working project, employs special machines from Dor Olliver Aimco, suitable specifically for molybdenum floatation in order to reduce the oxidizing of the reagent sodium hydrosulphate. Also the transport of the chamber product is done in hermetic conditions as the molybdenum flotation is done in two floatation rows and refining operations 3 to 8 are placed in the second row. Thus in the basic molybdenum floatation together with the first and second refining operations, which are hermetically closed, an ambient condition with low content of oxygen is created, that is about 8% for oxygen and about 92% of nitrogen, in which the oxidizing process is extremely reduced. This in turn results in reducing the consumption of the reagent depressor ? sodium hydrosulphate. In that way there is an improvement of the economical indices of the molybdenum production.

In this study, thorium mineral that found in the complex ore deposit bearing bastnasite, fluorite, and barite from Eskisehir - Sivrihisar district has been tried to extract by using HCl and H2SO4 leaching. Ore sample of approximately 3 tons taken from the ore deposit has been homogenized in order to obtain composite samples by means of ore preparation techniques for experiments. Results of chemical analyses of composite samples are as given; 40.8% CaF2, 35.35% BaSO4, 2.01 Ce, 1.5% La, 0.39% and 0.1% Th. HCl and H2SO4 leaching processes have been performed to gain Th in the ore. For determining the optimum particle size, the samples have been ground under controlled conditions and brought to the sizes of 0.065, 0.2, 1 and 3 mm. Leaching experiments have been carried out in both HCl and H2SO4 acids without roasting and roasting at the temperature of 900°C for 1, 3 and 6 h retention times for all particle sizes determined before. In the experiments, the highest Th recoveries reached are as follows; 78.74% Th when H2SO4 and 1 mm particle sized sample used, and 1 h roasting applied and 73.38% Th when HCl and 1 mm particle sized sample used, and 3 h roasting applied. The present work aimed to verify the possibility of using froth flotation to separate the constitu-ent minerals of an alaskite rock waste having as the main minerals quartz and feldspar. Three stages of tests have been carried through. In the first stage was used an amphoteric collector for flotation, diaminedioleate, at pH 2 and, after analyzing the final products, a very poor selectivity was ob-served. During the second stage of tests, different collectors that are normally used for feldspar flo-tation as amines, sulfonates and soybean oil were employed. Once more, it was not possible to reach reasonably selective results. In the third stage, a salt of etheramine was used for collecting the feldspar and hydrofluoric acid was utilized for controlling the pH. A simulation of three flotation steps (rougher, cleaner and recleaner) permitted to attain a good selectivity in the flotation process. A concentrate with a silica content of 96.6% was obtained. The low concentrate content of alkalis totalizing 0.52% and a feldspar recovery of 96.5% to the tailings, represented by the high content of Na, K, and Al2O3 in the tailings, demonstrated that the concentrate was made up mostly of quartz.

Today, sodium cyanide is extensively used for extracting gold, however it is highly toxic to the environment if not managed properly. This paper discusses the key challenges presented to gold operations in efforts to come into alignment with the Russian environmental regulations and suggests solutions to overcome these challenges. It is a fact that the major environmental threat cyanide poses to water sources. Therefore, natural water sources should be well protected from the adverse effect of cyanides used in hydrometallurgical processes. For this, the following site procedures and facilities are practiced: in-site and external water recycling systems, reclaim water treatment if required and tailings ponds with water impermeable screens (tailings ponds with controlled leakage). Cost comparison analysis of cyanide destruction methods was carried out. It was revealed that the aldehyde treatment method developed by Irgiredmet JSC demonstrated the best economics. Cyanide emissions are treated by mass-manufactured packed and membrane devices which allow to keep cyanides at the acceptable limiting values established by environmental regulatory agencies.

Calcite and magnesite are both carbonate minerals and their crystals belong to trigonal system. Flotation tests were carried out to investigate the flotation behaviors of calcite and magnesite. The test results show that the floatability of calcite and magnesite under different grinding environment had obvious differences. The floatability of calcite using sodium oleate as collector after dry grinding is better than wet grinding, but the floatability of magnesite after wet grinding is better than dry grinding. The XPS surface elements test and zeta potential measurement show that, wet and dry grinding process makes the distribution difference of surface anion and metal cation, then influence the floatability of the two carbonate minerals using sodium oleate as collector. Difference of the carbonate crystal structure and solubility properties was also investigated. Research shows that crystal structure difference of calcite and magnesite causes the difference of solubility, which can influence the flotation behaviors under different grinding environment. An approach to environmental sustainability and improved process economy, in sulphide minerals production is recycling of process water in flotation of complex sulphide ores, although the chemistry of process water may be a critical issue to flotation efficiency. The influence of major components of calcium and sulphate ions in process water on xanthate collector adsorption and flotation response using pure chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite minerals were investigated by Hallimond flotation, zeta-potential measurement, FTIR and XPS spectroscopy studies, while bench scale flotation tests were also carried out using complex sulphide ores. The impact of the species in flotation was comprehended using deionised water, tap water, process water and simulated water containing equivalent amount of calcium and sulphate species in process water. Hallimond flotation results showed a decrease of chalcopyrite and galena recovery in process water and also in the presence of calcium and sulphate ions in both deionised and process waters, whereas sphalerite does not respond to flotation. The adsorption of calcium and metal ions but not sulphate ions on the minerals is evidenced by zeta-potential data. FTIR and XPS studies revealed the presence of surface oxidized sulfoxy species and surface calcium carbonates on chalcopyrite in the presence of process water and water containing calcium ions, surface oxidized sulfoxy and carbonate species on galena in the presence of deionised water, process water and water containing calcium and sulphate ions, all at flotation pH 10.5, and these surface species influenced xanthate adsorption. The presence of surface oxidized sulfoxy and carbonate species at the sphalerite flotation pH 11.5 were seen in the presence of deionised water, process water and water containing calcium and sulphate ions, but the surface species does not influence xanthate adsorption. Bench scale flotation using two different complex sulphide ores showed that chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite recoveries are better in process water than tap water. The studies showed that the process water can be recycled in flotation with no detrimental effect on grade and recovery of sulphide minerals. The froth phase plays an important role in the flotation and upgrading of the final concentrate. At present, the techniques that have been used in the mineral industry to measure the froth recovery have limitations. The aim of this paper is to investigate the performance of the froth in an industrial flotation cell. A unique device has been developed which is capable of decoupling the froth zone from the pulp zone. It consists of two concentric tubes. The inner tube acts as a dropback collection chamber or catcher. The particles that detach from the froth phase fall directly into the catcher and are collected as froth dropback. The froth recovery measurements were carried out in a rougher bank of a copper concentrator treating sulphide minerals. The dropback device is designed so that it can be immersed into a plant size flotation cell and plant froth recovery measurements can be taken at any given time. During the experiments, the bubbles laden with valuable mineral particles entered the device from the plant flotation cell, subsequently rising to form a froth layer at the top of the device. The particles that detached from the froth zone were collected in the dropback collection chamber whereas the concentrate sample was collected by a launder. By drying, sizing and chemical analysis of the concentrate and dropback samples, the froth recovery, was estimated on the basis of the valuable component. The floatability of coal is affected by the presence of dissolved inorganic ions in plant process water. Water quality is characterized in terms of conductivity, hardness, turbidity and composition of oil. These quality indices are correlated with coal flotation performance for three different water named, ?R&D laboratory tap water?, ?process untreated water? from West Bokaro wahsey-2 Tata Steel, India and ?process treated water? after passing laboratory developed treatment process. The study clearly indicated that a significant quantity of clean coal is being lost due to poor process water quality used in the flotation process. The laboratory investigations showed that if these dissolved salts and suspended solids are reduced to even 50%, a clean coal yield improvement by minimum 5%~10% at the same ash level could be expected. Therefore, the conventional practice of water recycling though a thickener or a tailings pond needs a complete re-look. The water treatment process for recycled water has also been discussed for improving the process water quality as well as enhancement in flotation performance efficiency.

"A new PVM vertical ring high-gradient high-intensity permanent magnetic separator authorized by China Invention Patent ZL201110294866.4, which featured with vertical magnetic field structure was developed to dramatically save energy consumption and running costs compared with electromagnetic separators. The specific magnetic circuit design ensures PVM separator generating high magnetic field intensity as well as solving equipment large-scaling. The newly developed industrial PVM separator has been proved suitable for recovery of weak magnetic minerals or purification of non-metallic minerals benefiting from its high background and induction magnetic field intensity up to 0.8/1.5T, stable service performance and low running costs. The first ?1.5mm PVM separator has been applied in removing iron from quartz sand in Fengyang, Anhui, and ?2mm PVM separator will be installed to separate hematite. Industrial applications and tests proved that PVM separators could gain similar separation effects and especially save more than 80% of power consumption compared with the conventional electromagnetic high-gradient high-intensity magnetic separator, which will contribute a lot for energy conservation and environmental protection. The development of high gradient magnetic separator technology has played an important role in utilizing weak magnetic minerals, which has been widely used in many mining enterprises. The main forms of high-gradient magnetic separators include both of electromagnetic high-gradient and permanent magnetic high-gradient. The vertical ring high-gradient high-intensity permanent magnetic separator features with high magnetic field gradient, large processing capacity and never clogging, which has been widely used in recovering fine weak magnetic mineral and purification of non-metallic minerals[1-3]. However, electromagnetic coils excitation needs more energy consumption, and relatively high running costs and maintenance costs as a result of the complicated cooling system. So permanent magnetization of the electromagnetic magnetic separation equipment is a very important research direction at present. With the continuous improvement of resource utilization standard and efficiency requirements, high energy consumption of the electromagnetic vertical ring magnetic separator have been highlighted, which has affected the economic benefits of mining enterprises to a certain extent. In the aspect of high-gradient high-intensity permanent magnetic separation equipment, considerable researches have been carried out at home and abroad and many small-sized prototypes were developed yet never strode into large-scale industry applications[4-6]."

Liquid ? liquid reactions such as solvent extraction in hydrometallurgy and BTX extraction in petrochemical industry has long suffered from the long retention time mainly due to the limited interfacial area caused by the immiscibility between water and oil phase, requiring typically very large perfect mixer type reactors and tall adsorption towers. A novel spray reactor for immiscible liquids; that is the KISEI Nozzle Reactor (KNR) was introduced, enabling the drastic increase in the interfacial area between the reacting immiscible liquids. Various spray mechanisms were applied in materials processing, e.g. spray drying, powder metallurgy, and aerosol industry, but not in hydrometallurgy. The KISEI Nozzle Reactor(KNR) was fully developed and used in production of biodiesel from the immiscible triglycerides and methanol. An experience with a full production plant facility is briefly discussed in the current paper. With the fog-like methanol spray in oil medium, the trans esterification reaction was almost instantaneous, and transformed the traditional batch trans esterification process into a continuous production process. And above all, with no moving parts in the KISEI Nozzle Reactor (KNR), the process requires minimal operation and maintenance costs. During the flowsheet development for a potential commercial Cu/Ni separation plant at the In-co?s Sudbury operation, extensive laboratory and miniplant studies were carried out. There are two potential feed streams for Cu/Ni separation at the existing operation. It is shown that Cu/Ni separation from the rougher concentrate is relatively simple without need of regrind. However, Cu/Ni separation can be difficult from the bulk concentrate because of the presence of excess flotation reagents in the bulk concentrate slurry and locked particles. Excess flotation reagents created excess froth increasing entrainment. By replacing the slurry water with tap water and with addition of some hydrogen peroxide, entrainment is minimized and good Cu/Ni separation is achieved on the bulk concentrate. Fine regrind is required to increase liberation of the locked particles for ultimately high copper recovery at the minimal nickel content.

In recent years, heap leaching of gold is becoming wide spread due to low capital and operational costs that allows economically feasible processing of low-grade and cut-off grade ores. Currently, over 30 heap leach projects are operated in Russia. Some of the deposits treated by heap leach methods are almost depleted. Therefore, they will soon require spent heaps detoxification and reclamation. Traditionally, spent heaps are detoxified by chemical treatment. This process is characterized by relatively high kinetics and requires expensive reagents and additional equipment. The main disadvantage of this process is secondary contamination of the solutions by products of detoxification reactions and impurities contained in reagents. If there is enough time, spent heaps can be detoxified by natural degradation. The advantages of the proposed method are low operational costs due to use of existing heap leaching facilities and eliminating the need for chemicals for spent heaps detoxification. Residual concentrations of cyanides and thyocyanates in liquid phase (wet ore) of spent gold ore heaps after detoxification were 0.2~0.3 mg/L. Heavy metals were almost completely removed. The method was successfully used for detoxification of spent heaps at two gold mines.

In the present work an attempt has been made to study beneficiation of low-grade iron ore associated with manganese clay by selective flocculation. The representative samples obtained for this purpose were initially subjected to chemical and mineralogical studies. The chemical analyses indicated 42.56 % Fe, 6.25% Mn, 8.72 % SiO2 and 13.60 % Al2O3 in the representative sample. The mineralogical analyses carried out under optical microscope showed that the ore mineral predominantly comprised of iron oxides and hydroxides along with manganese and silicate as gangue minerals. Prior to the beneficiation studies, the samples were subjected to settling tests. These tests were carried out by using poly acrylic acid (paa), poly acryl amide (pam) and guar gum (gg) as the flocculants. From these studies it was observed that settling rate of particles increases with increase in pH and a maximum settling rate of 0.23 cm/secwas obtained at pH 9 in presence of poly acryl amide. Further, the samples were subjected to selective flocculation studies using above-mentioned reagents. From these studies better results were obtained in the experiments carried out with poly acryl amide as the flocculant. Thus, it was possible to upgrade the iron content from 42.5 to 53%, with a recovery of 92%. However, 51% Fe with recovery of 87% and 50% Fe with recovery of 94 % was obtained using poly acrylic acid and guar gum respectively.

Bentonite is an important industrial mineral with very wide application areas. Its unique colloidal, swelling, thickening and adsorption properties make it a useful agent in drilling, metal casting, and iron ore pelletizing, environmental, food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and many more industries. Because of its swelling property, bentonite suspensions can only be prepared at rather low solid coentrations, i.e. 8-10%. In order to process bentonite in slurries with high solid content, it was thought that a non-polar organic solvent, instead of water, can be used. Not only large amounts of bentonite can be dispersed in organic solvents but also the solvents may be regenerated. The bentonite obtained through such a process must either equal or better properties than those of untreated bentonite. In this study, the effect of organic solvents such as acetone, methyl-ethyl ketone and n-haxane on the main properties of bentonite, such as water adsorption and rheology, was investigated. High Gradient Magnetic Separator with Horizontal Magnetic Line is a new type High Gradient Magnetic Separator product. It has many specific advantages, such as water-air joint discharging technique, double pulses pulp dispersion technique, multi-magnetic gradient for collecting matrix with different diameter rods, better discharging rate with the especial matrix dispose, high separating accuracy and wide applicability. In this paper, the author makes a description of High Gradient Magnetic Separator with Horizontal Magnetic Line, and puts its emphasis on analyzing industrial production data using high gradient magnetic separator with Horizontal Magnetic Line to separate weakly magnetic minerals. It is found that as the rougher for weakly magnetic minerals separation, High Gradient Magnetic Separator with Horizontal Magnetic Line has more stable metallurgical performance and cheaper running costs than other types of High Gradient Magnetic Separator when the properties of the ore change greatly and there is in the case of embedded fine particle size distribution.
