This report investigates the limited use of super large backhoes in surface mines around the world. The demand for super large (> 700 t) hydraulic excavators is rising and most of the machines are sold as front shovel (FS) application. Despite advantages in faster cycle times super large backhoe (BH) machines are a minority (ca. 1% of the total machine population). This investigation is based upon the comparison between the volumes available to the BH and FS in one block and before the machine needs to move. The working conditions are created with standard parameters as given by Original Equipment Manufacturers of hydraulic excavators regarding bench height, angle, and material density. The travel amount of both machine types is derived from these volumes and compared. Furthermore, the travel amount of super large BHs is compared to the travel amount of smaller mining BHs and evaluated based on attachment length and bucket size. The calculations conclude that the volume of material recoverable in a single spot is about 75% higher for FSs. This leads to an increased travel for BHs. The combination of both the increased appearance of electrical driven machines (in the class of > 700 t excavators) and the travel amount lead to a high risk of damaging the cable or the excavator. Enlarged wear on the travelling parts is also attended by the higher travelling. A direct comparison of commonly found working set ups shows that the ratio between volumes is 32% which leads to an increased travel amount. In comparison with a 250 t BH, the calculation shows that the smaller BH is able to reach nearly 50% of the volume of the super large BHs. The main reason for this is the respectively high reach on smaller machines which, combined with other factors, leads to a significantly higher number of BHs in lighter classes.

"The East Bull Lake gabbro-anorthosite intrusion is one of several Early Proterozoic layered mafic intrusions occurring along the Southern Province - Superior Province boundary in the Elliot Lake - Sudbury region, Ontario. The base of the East Bull Lake intrusion comprises abundant plagioclase cumulates (Leucogabbronorite Zone) hosting two distinct styles of sulfide mineralization: (1) disseminated magmatic sulfides, and (2) disseminated to massive, structurally controlled sulfides. Both types of mineralization are enriched in Pd, Pt, Au, Cu and Ni. The host rocks to the sulfide mineralization display a range of interesting features including nodular textures, dendriticpegmatitic mafic pods, inclusion-rich zones (pyroxenite, anorthosite and granitic inclusions) and magmatic breccias. Disseminated chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and pentlandite occur in concentrations of up to 100/0 within erratically distributed gossan pods near the base of the intrusion. The sulfides were originally precipitated from intercumulus liquids, but were subsequently recrystallized and locally remobilized along fractures during the major period of metamorphism and deformation that affected the East Bull Lake intrusion. The base- and precious-metal tenor of the structurally controlled sulfides can be explained by extensive remobilization and reconcentration of the pre-existing magmatic sulfides in the vicinity of a major shear zone. Both styles of sulfide mineralization locally contain ppm abundances of POE + Au and are generally Pd- and Cu-rich, although both display large variations in Pd:Pt and Cu:Ni ratios. The magmatic sulfides are more strongly enriched in POE and contain up to 1470 ppm Pd in 100% sulfide. Several factors, including source characteristics, magmatic processes (crustal assimilation, fractional crystallization) and post-magmatic interaction with hydrous fluid, have influenced the present distribution of POE, Cu and Ni in the East Bull Lake intrusion.The magmatic sulfide occurrences from the East Bull Lake intrusion compare favorably with marginal-type deposits from rift-related intrusions (Noril'sk-Talnakh region, Siberia; Duluth Complex, U.S.A.) in terms of their distribution, but are most similar to reef-type POE deposits with respect to their base- and precious-metal geochemistry. The combination of high POE tenors and large tonnages that is observed for the POE-Cu-Ni mineralization from the East Bull Lake intrusion suggests that a good potential exists for the presence of economic concentrations of Pd, Pt, Au, Cu and Ni in the intrusion. On a global scale, the East Bull Lake intrusion is part of a suite of Early Proterozoic plutons, many of which contain significant volumes of stratiform and/or marginaltype POE-Cu-Ni mineralization. The East Bull Lake intrusion is also one of the oldest mineralized intrusions derived from a sub-Superior Province mantle source region that has given rise to several significant magmatic POE-Cu-Ni deposits during the period 2.5 Ga to 1.1 Ga."

The total saleable coal product, approximately 5,5 million tons per annum, is exported via Richards Bay.Presplitting and Throw BlastingPresplitting was initially introduced in September 1980, as a means of dewatering t he overburden and mid burden to facilitate the use of dry-mix explosives a s opposed to slurry explosives.The utilization of the throw blasting technique arose as a direct result of observed ground movement after the successful introduction of presplitting. A brief description follows.Method of PresplittingAfter determining the desired presplit line, 250-mm holes are drilled to top of coal at 4-m to 6-m intervals, dependent on the competency of the rock overlying the coal. A single 60-kg charge of slurry explosives is located at the bottom of each hole, no tamping is used and all the holes are detonated simultaneously. The results are a competent, straight, vertical highwall. This enables accurate control of the first row of blast holes closest to the highwall, which is a prime requisite for successful throw blasting."

Preliminary studies of the potential for the production of warm water (up to perhaps 150°C) have been carried out in the Plains region of Western Canada. Production might be from depths as great as about 5 km . Natural waters in this temperature range are currently being used for space heating in other parts of the world. The geography and stratigraphy of the Prairie Provinces are reviewed in terms of their apparent potential for warm-water production. Temperature, salinity and other data provided by wells drilled by the oil and gas industry are reviewed and problem areas are outlined.

"IntroductionIndustrial applications of mica utilize two commercially important varieties of mica: muscovite and phlogopite. Muscovite mica is a potassium mica with a general chemical formula, H2KA1(Si04)3 h, and is sometimes referred to as a potas hsilicate. Phlogopite is a magnesium mica having a general chemical formula, H2KMgSi(Si04)3, and is distinguished from the muscovite mica by its decomposition in sulphuric acid.Canada is one of the major natural mica producers in the world. A large tonnage of the mica powders is at present mined and processed in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. This Canadian mica is of the phlogopite type. A closely related mineral of the mica family which is widely used in the construction industry is vermiculite. It is a dehydrated magnesium-aluminum-iron silicate characterized by a foliated structure. Expanded vermiculite, which is often referred to as exfoliated mica, is used as many types of thermal and acoustic insulation, as loose fill in buildings, as an aggregate in concrete, as an ingredient in plaster and insulating concrete , and in fire-proofing compositions. Natural phlogopite and muscovite mica powders are used extensively as reinforcing agents in organic polymers. They also have a wide range of applications in commerical products. For example, dry-ground mica powders are used in large tonnage as a surface finish in roofing materials and as a bonding agent in wallboard joint cement. Common products such as paint, rubber, plastics and welding rods contain mica. Recent studies have also shown that mica powders can be added to portland cement in the preparation of concrete products, as they could improve the tensile strength of the concrete products. "Abstract - The Draa Sfar polymetallic deposit, at about 16 km NW of Marrakech in Morocco, is a massive sulfide zone at the contact between an underlying volcanic and an overlying clastics sequence. The mineralized body is a flat lens with schistosity and "boudinage," tilted to the west and with a strong dip to the east. The lens extends over a strike length of about 2 km and from surface to a depth of about 1 km, with thickness varying from 1 m to almost 30 m. It has been intersected by about one hundred surface drill holes and, in its south part, by about thirty underground fan holes from two exploration levels at depths of 300 m and 400 m. On these two levels, the massive sulfide zone has been channel sampled over a cumulative length of about 0.7 km. Results from drill and channel samples are used to estimate the resources of the orebody according to several methods: sections, polygons around intercepts on a longitudinal plan, grids on the same longitudinal plan with various distance weighting methods including kriging and, finally, a 3D grid with the same range of interpolators. A comparison of the various estimates delineates the important factors in deriving resources for this type of deposit. Those factors are mostly geological and related to the interpretation of the geometry of the two limiting surfaces of the zone. For the 3D gridding, the authors have devised a new and original method that constrains the interpolation of blocks from samples to a geometry of limiting surfaces. The resulting model shows internal grade variations that parallel fluctuations of zone thickness and orientation without having to re-orientate the search window in each block. Résumé - Le gisement polymétallique de Draa Sfar, situé à environ 16 km au NW de Marrakech est un horizon de sulfure massif au contact d’une formation volcano-sédimentaire de base et d’une formation détritique sur-jacente. Le corps minéralisé se présente sous forme d’une méga-lentille aplatie, schistosée, boudinée et déversée vers l’ouest avec un fort pendage vers l’est s’étendant sur une longueur de 2 km et une profondeur de près de 1 km avec une épaisseur variant de moins d’un mètre à près de 30 m. Il a été reconnu par plus d’une centaine de sondages de surface et, dans sa partie sud, par une trentaine de trous souterrains en éventail à partir de deux niveaux à des profondeurs respectives de 300 m et 400 m. Sur ces mêmes niveaux, des traçages ont permis de rainurer le minerai sur une longueur cumulée de 0.7 km. Les données de sondage et de rainurage ont servi à estimer les ressources du gisement selon plusieurs méthodes : sections, polygones sur longitudinale, grille sur longitudinale avec différentes pondérations en fonction des distances incluant le krigeage et enfin grille tridimensionnelle avec le même éventail de pondérateurs. La comparaison des estimés obtenus permet de mettre en évidence les facteurs importants dans l’estimation des ressources de ce type de gisement. Ces facteurs sont essentiellement géologiques et relatifs à l’interprétation de la géométrie des limites des corps minéralisés. Pour l’estimation sur grille tridimensionnelle, on a mis au point une technique originale qui calque l’interpolation des blocs à partir des échantillons sur cette géométrie des surfaces de contact. Le modèle résultant montre des variations internes de teneurs qui épousent les fluctuations d’épaisseur et d’orientation de la zone sans qu’il soit nécessaire de ré-orienter les fenêtres de recherche dans chaque bloc."

"Abstract - Based upon an extensive database, this paper analyzes the record of modern mineral exploration success and establishes the 50-year trends in discovery. The record clearly shows that the overall discovery rate rose during the 1950s and 1960s, peaked in the 1980s, and fell during the 1980s and 1990s. By commodity and ore-type target, the pattern of discovery is not continuous. Typically, it is episodic as a series of waves with minor resurgence. The waves reflect the order of the so-called discovery booms, led by uranium, then nickel, and copper, polymetallic base metals and gold. With the possible exception of gold, the discovery booms appear to be independent of metal price, although favorable perceptions of the price outlook may well have initiated the boom or led resurgence. Although difficult to quantify, an emerging trend in modern discovery is the integration of several detection techniques into the search process. No doubt, this trend will continue as orebodies become more and more difficult to find. The record of the past two decades shows that greenfield discovery rates have progressively fallen even though the level of investment in exploration has risen to an all-time high. This trend reflects increasing discovery risk. Several factors are contributing to this trend. Perhaps the two most important are: (1) deteriorating economics as increasing real costs and decreasing real prices continue to raise the economic hurdles for minimum acceptable exploration targets, and (2) increasing exploration maturity in many search terrains, particularly those in the traditional regions of North America and Australasia. To succeed cost-effectively in this new environment of increasing discovery risk will require extraordinary creativity, innovation, and technical skill coupled with commercial discipline."

There are numerous manufacturer supplying these industries with a wide variety of equipment and accessories.IAL's underground radio communications system combines the techniques of cable TV and mobile radio to produce a flexible communications system with most of the advantages of both systems. Standard off-the-shelf mobile, portable, base-station and repeater equipment can be used. The equipment may need modification to be customized to particular end user requirements, but does not require a complete new unit redesign. Likewise, the cable TV distribution equipment is off the-shelf, with some items requiring modification for underground system application.Radio communications can be provided wherever the cable system is extended. Where traffic or type of activity warrants it, multiple radio channels can be provided on the same cable. Certain radio channels could also be used with data channels for control or supervision of remote equipment or environmental conditions. In addition, the same cable can be used to distribute or monitor signals from remote TV cameras in selected or dangerous areas. The system can be interfaced to a telephone system, if required, to provide extended communications to above-ground workshops, offices, medical stations or even hospitals and other emergency services.IntroductionReliable communications among personnel throughout an underground mine area have long been the dream and goal of various mine operations personnel. "The design of rock foundations may need to evaluate shear strength of rock-concrete interface by performing laboratory direct shear tests. A series of tests were carried out on specimens for different values of the spacing free of encapsulating material about the shear plane and different values of normal stress. Different kinds of failure were observed and not necessarily at the rock-concrete interface. The spacing free of encapsulating material appeared to be of significant influence on the test results. A mechanical analysis is presented which illustrate the influence of the loading conditions in the direct shear box on the failure mechanism. INTRODUCTIONThe design of rock foundations subjected to significant lateral loads requires defining the value of the shear strength of the interface between rock and cast in place concrete. Verifying the stability against sliding of strip footings subjected to inclined loads (SETRA, 2009) or concrete gravity dams (CFBR, 2013) are common examples where design modelling approaches imply the shear strength, sometimes the deformation behavior, of the rock-concrete interface, more or less assumed as a failure plane.Defining the behavior of rock-concrete interfaces relates to tribology. Many studies have been conducted to improve the representation of this behavior (e.g., Johnston & Lam, 1989; Kodikara & Johnston, 1994; Gu, Seidel & Haberfield, 2003; Saiang, Malmgren & Nordlund , 2005; Fishman, 2008; Eltervaag, 2013; Gutierrez, 2013), raising many questions. The behavior appeared to be influenced by many factors such as the geometry of the interface which is not planar, the roughness of the natural rock, the rock mineralogy and the concrete formulation. In addition, the study of the shear strength of rock-concrete interfaces involves considering the two different deformation behaviors of both rock and concrete. Finally, the observed failure mechanism is strongly influenced by the initial cohesion due to adhesion between the two materials when concrete is directly cast onto rock."

As is well known, the standard Al-Cu 206 cast alloys have extremely low iron contents, usually less than 0.15 wt. %. Recently it is found that the iron contents of the 206 cast alloys can be extended up to 0.5 wt. % through the precise control of the iron-rich intermetallic phases. In the present work, the tensile fracture surfaces of the 206 cast alloys with various iron contents are systematically analyzed to understand the failure mechanisms. Results show that higher iron contents can reduce the tensile properties (especially the ductility) of the alloys mainly due to the increasing volume percent and size of the iron-rich intermetallics. Tensile failure mainly occurs at the iron-rich intermetallics/matrix interfaces for the platelet ß-Fe, but by the self-disassociation for the Chinese script a-Fe and Alm(FeMn). Cracking is easier to initiate and propagate along the longitudinal axis of the platelet intermetallics, but it can be deflected along the branches/arms of the Chinese script iron-rich phases, making the alloy more resistant to the propagation of the cracks, and thus the Chinese script iron-rich intermetallics are less harmful than platelet ß-Fe. In addition, it was also found that the Chinese script a-Fe has even a less damaging effect compared to the Chinese script Alm(FeMn) due to the relatively small size and compact morphology.

"Digital image processing and enhancement techniques have been applied to airborne gamma ray spectrometry data from Sudbury, Ontario. These results have been correlated and compared with the available geological maps to evaluate their usefulness for identifying lithological units. Digital processing allows the correlation of various data sets, and different combinations of images can be tested and viewed as a composite image. Composite images with pseudocolours provide an opportunity to analyze and correlate information that is not otherwise apparent in individual images. Principal component analysis has been applied to the gamma ray spectrometry data to evaluate their efficacy and relative information contents of the measured and computed data. The results of this study indicate that the combined radioelements image (obtained by combining the radioelement image and the ratio images) is effective for defining areas of relative concentration of a specific element in near surface materials. Furthermore, the composite radioelements image (produced by combining three separate radioelement images) and composite principal components image reflect large-scale lithological variations. IntroductionThe Sudbury area is a unique geological structure located in the southern Canadian Shield (Fig. 1). Because the area hosts economically significant nickel-copper deposits (Pye et al., 1984), it has been surveyed in great detail by geological and geophysical methods. In order to obtain meaningful geological infonnation about the Sudbury area, several studies have been carried out with the application of innovative mathematical techniques for geophysical modelling, and attempts have been made to integrate the multisensor geophysical data available for the area (e.g. Gupta et aI., 1984; Moon et al., 1988; Singh et al., 1993). The main objective of this paper is to apply digital image processing and enhancement techniques to airborne ganuna ray spectrometry data in order to determine their usefulness for regional geological mapping."

"Planned increases in electric furnace productivity and higher matte temperatures needed for the Sudbury Smelter's S02 Abatement Plan, require an improved matte tap hole. Since startup in 1978, the matte tap holes have been incrementally improved by the addition of copper cooling blocks around the refractory tap blocks. These improvements provided a tap block life of about 100 taps per campaign.In July 1993, a prototype matte taphole was installed in Number 2 Electric Furnace to develop the technology to increase tap hole service life. The design was based on a heat transfer model of the tapping process to determine candidate refractory materials and cooler arrangements. The prototype tap hole features increased copper cooling, high conductivity refractories and extensive instrumentation. Eight trial campaigns are reviewed outlining the performance of silicon carbide and graphite refractories and typical heat loads during tapping.IntroductionFalconbridge Limited operates two 36 MYA, 6 electrode submerged arc electric furnaces in Falconbridge, Ontario. The furnaces, commissioned in 1978, smelt a partially roasted nickel-copper calcine, to produce matte for converting and slag for discard. Additional details of the smelter are available in the literature(1-4).Each furnace was equipped with two matte tap holes located in the furnace end wall. Early in the campaign, matte tap holes were identified as a weak area in the furnace which could be improved. From 1981 to 1987, incremental improvements were made to the design by the addition of water cooled copper blocks. In 1993, a prototype matte tap hole was designed and installed in Number 2 electric furnace to develop the technology to increase tap hole service life. Improved service life is required to meet planned increases in electric fWl1ace productivity and the higher matte temperature needed for the smelter's S02 Abatement Plan.This paper reviews matte tap hole development since 1978; outlines the prototype matte tap hole design, refractory selection and installation; and details the performance of the prototype tap hole during the first eight campaigns."

"There is a widespread concern that certain of Finance Minister Michael Wilson's Tax Reform proposals will likely lead to a significant decline in flow through funding after 1988. This does not bode well for the junior exploration sector, which relies heavily on flow-through to finance exploration programs. The exploration industry is actively pursuing various solutions to the problems posed by Tax Reform, in order to ensure that flow-through has a future.IntroductionWhile the proposals contained in Finance Minister Michael Wilson's Tax Reform White Paper may not be as far-reaching as some people had expected, nevertheless the combination of the existing tax rules and proposed new rules offers sufficient complexity to keep pencils sharpened for many months. After having had an opportunity to study Tax Reform since June 18, 1987, the sharpened pencils are suggesting that the White Paper is not without its shortcomings and pitfalls. Insofar as the mineral exploration industry is affected, there is widespread concern that adoption of certain Tax Reform proposals could spell near disaster for mineral exploration in Canada. More specifically, there seems to be a consensus among the industry, as well as some federal and provincial government officials, that the announced phase-out of the ""mining exploration depletion allowance"" (MEDA) would reduce the appeal of flow-through shares to the point where only a fraction of exploration funding would be financed in the future by flow-through."

"This paper presents an overview of the state-of-the-art in industrial and utility power metering and control systems with particular emphasis on Digital Power Meters and Power Demand Controllers.IntroductionModern micro-processor technology, combined with very fast, high accuracy analog to digital converters, is rapidly allowing economical, digital power instrumentation systems to replace the traditional electro-mechanical meters and equipment previously used for instrumentation, control and protection in industrial power systems. Consequently, instrumentation and Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems that were only practical for the very large utility or user are now available to smaller utilities and users. The information available includes sequence of event recording, trend logging, energy management cost allocation and automated load control, among others. The heart of any power monitoring system is the Digital Instrumentation Package (DIP) . These ""DIP's"" include Digital Power Meters (DPM's) and Power Demand Controllers (PDC's) as well as other specialized instrumentation packages such as Mini RTU's."

The cost benefits of controlling dilution of extracted ore have been very well understood by miners and mining professionals for many years. However, as we strive towards more mechanization, the dilution factor has been compromised in order to fit ?equipment? that is better suited to provide improved safety and productivity. Alternately, the drilling and ground support is accomplished by handheld drilling. In 2007, a short study, commissioned by CAMIRO (Canadian Mining Industry Research Organization) on the safety of hand held drilling vs. mechanized drilling, concluded that the risk of injury with handheld drills was seven times greater than with mechanized drills. Armed with this data, MEDATech Engineering proposed to the CAMIRO group to fund development of a ?MICRO Bolter?.

These are Th, U, As, S, P, Sb, Na, Ag, Zn, Pb, Ni, Ba, Sc, AI, Mo (and Bi, Ge, Ga, F and Li), i.e., more or less highly volatilized elements. Of the less volatilized metals such as Fe, Ca, Cu, Ti, K, Co, Mn (and lanthanides), certain portions presumably also escape as stack emissions. Diadochy and spinel formation in bottom slag is presented as an emission-reducing agent for certain metals.IntroductionThe Lingan coal-fired power generation plant, owned and operated by the Nova Scotia Power Corporation, produces annually about 140,000 metric tons of ash (the residual mineral content after burning coal). The tonnage is based on a 15 per cent average ash content of Cape Breton coal.For purposes of this report, samples of the hard, fused slag (bottom slag) that is accumulated at bottoms of boilers, and electrostatically precipitated fly ash (ep ash), were collected and investigated. Bottom slag is a minor component of the produced ashes.The ashes were surveyed and the presence of over 75 major, minor and trace elements is reported. From this survey, 25 elements were selected to establish elemental enrichment/depletion trends when the proportions of the less than 45 micrometre <45µm) fractions in ep ashes increase. The results are significant in that, taking the case of elemental enrichment, the elements involved are likely to escape into the atmosphere, i.e, highly volatilized elements. Depletion trends for elements are presumably associated with less volatilized elements during coal-firing. Quantification of the emission of atmospheric pollutants is not considered part of this work. ""Igneous"" minerals generated during coal combustion include spinels (found mainly in the bottom slag), quartz, glass and mullite."

We recently proposed a continuous production process for titanium metal with some experimental results. In the process, titanium tetrachloride is reduced by Mg in the presences of Bi to form a Bi-Ti alloy at 900ºC. At this temperature, the obtained alloy is liquid and allows for the continuous removal of product and heat from the reaction vessel. The obtained Bi-Ti alloy was vacuum-distilled at 1000ºC for 24 hr, and 98 at % (92 wt %) titanium, which was easily crashed to powder, was obtained. Bi solvent was selected because of the highest titanium solubility at 900ºC and the moderate vapor pressure among the candidate metals (Bi, Sn, Pb, Zn, and Sb).
