The Nokomai valley is located within the pumpellyite/actinolite facies of the Otago Schist, a regional scale metamorphic belt in Southern New Zealand. The Otago Schist is dominated by psammitic and pelitic greyschist with more subordinate greenschist, quartzite, marble, and ultramafics. Mining in the Nokomai, began in the 1860s, with sluicing of terrace gravels in the lower valley. Good gold is reported to have been won from unconformities within very weathered gravels lower in the terrace sequences, and particularly from within channels which dissect these older deposits. Gold was recovered from these terraces in the main Nokomai Valley, and two major tributaries (Victoria Gully and Bullock Head Creek). In the period 1885 - 1887 further gold was discovered in basal gravels beneath the Nokomai flats when the Hunter brothers sank two shafts and excavated a connecting drive to discover a lead 1.2 - 1.5 m thick. The Golden Lion Sluicing Company began mining in 1896 using an hydraulic elevator on the very 'tight' 1.8 - 2.4 m of basal gravels. This operation was followed by the Nokomai Gold Sluicing Company whose average return grade was >485 mglm3 until mining ceased in 1943 (Wopereis; 1988, 1989). A quartz vein, Commissioners Reef, was worked for small production at some time during the 1920 - 1930 period, until fault termination of the vein ceased production.

There has been a gradual increase in the volume of internationally traded thermal and coking coal, with emphasis on blending of coals rather than single coal usage. New Zealand can take advantage of this situation, especially with its low ash and sulphur content coals. However, there is a need to clarify the thermal and coking behaviour of these coals as they relate to other market players, to benefit both the consumer and supplier. The high volatile matter contents of New Zealand coking coals are due to their high vitrinite content, which causes them to demonstrate stronger coking properties over a wider rank range than Gondwana coals. These same high vitrinite levels appear to correspond with lower initial softening temperatures than for Gondwana coals of similar rank. Preliminary results using thermogravimetric analysis also suggest that New Zealand high volatile bituminous coals can be used to substitute for higher rank Gondwana coals in combustion processes.

Maori economic development still remains an enigma to many people some 157 years after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. It has only been in the last decade as a result of increasing pressures from Maori to recognize and settle grievances arising from the Treaty and the resulting compensation issues that "mainstream" has begun to sit up and take notice. While Treaty settlements such as the Tainui, Ngai Tahu and Fisheries settlements have gained prominence as a source of economic potential for Maori, there are significant existing assets owned by Maori worth an estimated $4.6 billion that add an exciting new dimension to Maori contribution to New Zealand's enterprise economy.   Despite the fact that many claims have yet to be resolved, Maori are clearly shifting from grievance to development mode as evidenced by their focus on capacity building through education, strategic alliances nationally and internationally and the significant growth of nett asset worth of Maori interests in a number of industry sectors.   In essence, Maori provide a large un-tapped economic potential in New Zealand. The years of relative economic obscurity appear to have wetted their appetite for positive growth and economic independence. Given current trends, it would not be unrealistic to expect the asset base of Maori to double in value over the next decade and to see the emergence of Maori owned Corporates not only within the New Zealand economy but also trading actively in the global market place.

The history of mining is rightly proud of its achievements in improving productivity and cost improvements over the years. No matter what measure is used, tonnes per manhour, cost per tonne, etc vast improvements have been made over the last hundred years. In fact over the last ten years in Australian coal mines raw coal output per employee has increased by 60 per cent. When one examines why these improvements have taken place the principal reasons have been technological advancement in mining equipment, excavator and dump truck capacity increases, longwall and continuous miners continually improving in reliability and size. Of course all these improvements are correlated to an increase in capital cost. Even with the above-mentioned advances the pressure for increased performance is as strong as ever. The international mining and mineral-processing sector is currently operating in a recessive market with some traditional commodities, eg gold trading at 20 year lows. During recessive times senior management will demand greater returns on capital employed: the obvious choices being reducing costs or increasing throughput. In addition, head office environments will often place a capital freeze on operational management so the opportunity to take advantage of technological change is not available. The challenge is, therefore, to increase throughput and cut costs without the need for capital. The answer is to optimise the existing labour and plant. If done systematically a result in productivity improvement, in our experience, as high as 45 per cent can be achieved with the average across South East Asia and Australasia being 21 - 23 per cent. The intention of this paper is to present a systematic approach to labour and machine utilisation thereby gaining the greatest possible return on the existing capital base.

Construction work on one of the world's largest landslide stabilisation projects is drawing to a close in Central Otago. Begun in mid 1990, major stabilisation work has been carried out on seven large rockslides which will be partially inundated when the Clyde dam reservoir (Lake Dunstan) is filled. The work has required the construction of 14.5 kilometres of tunnel, 60 kilometres of surface drilling, 78 kilometres of drilled drainage holes and five million cubic metres of earthworks. The stabilisation programme has been carried out by the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand as part of the Clyde Power Project, a hydroelectric development on the Clutha River.

The zinc-lead lode at Rosebery, on the West coast of Tasmania, has a total length of over 4000 ft. It consists of five elongated lenses parallel to the foliation planes of the quartz sericite schist, and is situated at the junction of the quartz sericite schist and a thin belt of slate. The lenses consist of massive, fine grained sulphide ore, with small amounts of quartz, barite, sericite and chlorite, and they terminate in masses of low grade ore. The gangue minerals increase in quantity in the low grade ore which includes small quantities of the manganese garnet, spessartite. The schist walls of the lenses are in places impregnated with lode minerals to a degree sufficient to permit them to be regarded as economic ore.The ore-bodies have developed from incoming mineral solutions by the replacement of the quartz sericite schist and are localised where the ore solutions have been confined by a relatively impervious slate band. The early stages of replacement of the schists are signified by the development of pyritic bands which are succeeded by a strong development of zinc blende. With ptogressive crystallisation, the character of the mineral solutions gradually changed and the development of galena, and its associated bournonite, became more important in the later stages.Remnants of the replaced schist, in the form of isolated wisps and schlieren of sericite and chlorite, are present in the ore body, more noticeably in the pyritic specimens. An important feature of the ore is the association of small ogllantities of gold with trahedrite.

"Gold ores often show significant inter-domain variation with respect to the gravity recoverable gold (GRG) content and the leach behaviour of the non-GRG component. Liberation assessment is extremely difficult for gold due to its malleability and the high sampling errors and poor test reproducibility resulting from gold’s high specific gravity and the low metal concentrations that occur in most gold ores. The use of microscopic techniques for the liberation assessment of gold is also impractical due to the high number of sampling errors and high cost of analysis.Curtin University’s Gold Technology Group has developed an online carbon-in-pulp/carbon-in-leach (CIP/CIL) simulation model called SIMCIL, which has been used since 1999 to model and simulate industrial leach-adsorption circuits. Recently the model has been upgraded to include an integrated liberation-leach modelling (ILLM) approach, which can be used to evaluate the impact of various process parameters (such as grind size, bleed to gravity etc) and circuit configurations on leach-adsorption circuit behaviour and overall plant gold recovery. A new time-efficient ore characterisation methodology has been researched and developed to provide the required liberation-leach data used in the ILLM approach, which is implemented online for the modelling of gold operations. The Work Health and Safety Act 2020 (WA) (WHS Act; DMIRS, 2020) and associated Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022 (WA) (WHS Regulations; DMIRS, 2022), supporting guidance materials and other laws, such as the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth) (SD Act), have imposed new duties on every person or business conducting an undertaking (PCBU) in Western Australia, including those operating in the mining industry. These laws and associated guidance materials combine to require owners, operators and contractors to discharge positive duties and better report and manage psychosocial hazards in the workplace. For mine operators, there is a positive duty to not only identify and eliminate hazards relating to psychological harm, sexual harassment and gendered violence at work, but to also report incidents to the safety regulator that could result in serious harm, even while internal and police investigations are ongoing. Traditional mines safety teams are navigating the evolving frontier of psychological and gendered safety as the duties relating to psychosocial safety and sexual harassment at work continue to expand. This paper will review the legal obligations on PCBUs to conduct internal investigations into critical psychosocial incidents and gendered violence on mines, whilst balancing the demands and sensitivities of investigations by the safety regulator and police. There are emerging approaches to safety investigations that can aid PCBUs in managing their investigations of psychosocial incidents and gendered violence, including trauma-informed investigation techniques, collaboration with psychological experts and the use of limited legal privilege. Well managed and sensitive investigations can foster trust amongst workers, result in improved incident reporting by workers and lead to enhanced safety outcomes for the resources industry whilst preserving the legal positions of involved PCBUs. Specifically traversing the new duty to consult, cooperate and coordinate, this practical session will arm mine managers, safety professionals and human resources professionals, from mine operators and mining contractors alike, with tools and processes to bring to safety investigations, particularly on residential mine sites.

Mineral resource development activities impact the health and well-being of many people, from workers, to families and surrounding communities. In the current environment of corporate social responsibility life-of-mine planning considers that mining activities should be conducted in the best environmentally, socially and economically acceptable way for the entire life of the mine (ie from exploration to decommissioning and closure). In this context, the health impacts of mining extend throughout the life of the community from worker injury and chronic exposure to communicable and non-communicable causes of illness, through to family and community health and well-being. At the inaugural Life-of-Mine conference in July 2012, the authors proposed the life-of-mine in the life-of-community (LOMLOC) matrix as a framework for understanding issues at the interface between resource extraction operations and the surrounding environment.This paper reviews and compares health activities extracted from social and environmental reports published by selected major mining companies with American operations in Canada, Colombia and Brazil. These corporate approaches to public health management are mapped to the LOMLOC matrix to identify and compare trends and behaviour in corporate health investments. During the last two decades, China has expanded its iron and steel industry very quickly, from less than 100 Mt/a steel production to over 700 Mt/a. It caused big increases in both domestic iron ore production and imported iron ore quantities year by year. The mode of iron ore supply has changed from almost all domestic supply to major tonnes of imported ore plus domestic ore supply. Over 200 blast furnaces with volumes larger than 1000 m3 each have been built and put into operation. Sinter machines have been enlarged quickly. There are now 135 sinter machines with =200 m2 sintering area each. Pellet production increased from 11.94 Mt in 1999 to 210 Mt in 2011, resulting from rapidly increasing domestic concentrate supply and rapid development of the grate-kiln process. The typical ferrous burden constitution is high basicity sinter plus pellets plus lump. The pellet proportion increased and the sinter proportion decreased gradually. A lot of technical improvements, like deep bed sintering, sintering with a high ratio of limonite, composite sintering, pellet process optimisation, a high ratio of hematite in pelletisation, blast furnace operation with low-grade ferrous burdens and hazardous element control, etc have been made to enhance iron burden quality and to reduce hot metal cost. Chinese iron and steel production is expected to increase slightly in the next few years. Its overcapacity should be controlled effectively. Given the variations of iron ore supply, pellet production will keep progressing in terms of production scale and pellet quality, the sintering process will be improved further by various measures to utilise different ores efficiently, and ferrous burden constitution will be optimised continuously to realise the lowest cost of hot metal production.CITATION:Sha, Y and Wang, Z, 2013. Traditional kinematic and statistical analyses of geological structure for geotechnical engineering applications, while considered industry standard practice, have some limitations and unrealistic assumptions. An improved approach involves a discrete fracture network (DFN), a numerical model that explicitly represents how defects may be spatially distributed through the rock mass. The DFN technique utilises the structural data in stochastic analyses to give a range of possible models used for visualisation and stability analyses.The early development of the DFN approach was largely associated with modelling fractured hydrocarbon reservoirs and nuclear waste isolation programs. With recent improvements to computational power it has become recognised internationally as a valuable tool for modelling some geomechanical problems encountered when designing excavations in fractured rock masses. For tunnelling or slope stability projects DFN modelling provides visualisation of a rock mass and identification of likely failure mechanisms.This paper presents a suite of DFN modelling undertaken for the design of a tunnel within the Ashfield Shale unit of the Sydney Basin, Australia. The necessary input parameters and derivation of these, along with the importance of both an accurate engineering geology model and validation of the synthetic fracture network are demonstrated. Multiple realisations of the DFN were analysed to provide an indication of the number and volume of unstable blocks for the proposed tunnel geometry, enhancing support design. The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Ltd has carried out a mineral resource assessment of the Coromandel region, one of the most mineral-rich regions of New Zealand. The assessment focussed on metallic minerals and clays, because these are the main commodities that have potential for increased production and export from the region (and from New Zealand).   Three steps were used in the assessment: 1) development of mineral deposit models, 2) comparison of the models with regional geology, structure, geochemistry and past mineral production to estimate the number of undiscovered mineral deposits, and 3) application of grade-tonnage models to determine the quantity and value of the known and undiscovered resources. In step 1, descriptive and grade-tonnage mineral deposit models were developed for 11 different types of mineral deposits: ò     Low-sulphidation andesite-hosted epithermal Au-Ag ò     Low-sulphidation rhyolite-hosted epithermal Au-Ag ò     High-sulphidation quartz-alunite epithermal Au ò     Porphyry Cu-Au-Mo ò     Andesite-hosted polymetallic veins adjacent to mineralised porphyry stocks ò     Zn-Pb-Ag skarn ò     Cu-Ag skarn ò     Hot spring Hg ò     Shoreline placer Ti ò     Rhyolite-hosted halloysite clay ò     Volcanic-related kaolinite clay   Step 2 was aided by a geographic information system (GIS) assembled from a number of digital spatial data sets including: a digital elevation model, an aeromagnetic map (from open file mining company data), a geological map (from the GNS QMAP project), location of areas of hydrothermal alteration, locations of mineral deposits (from the GERM database), stream sediment geochemical analyses (from the REGCHEM database), and a lineament map derived from satellite remote sensing data and the digital elevation model.   Based on May 2001 commodity prices, potential resources estimated for the 11 mineral deposit and grade-tonnage models total NZ$22 806 million for the metallic minerals, NZ$1000 million for halloysite clay deposits and NZ$57 million for kaolinite clay deposits.

The excavatability of the rock mass in a proposed open pit mine at Globe-Progress has been assessed. The rock mass was initially evaluated by determining variations in seismic velocity and by using the Revised Size-Strength Chart. These two assessments should be performed during the feasibility or early investigation stages of a project. A complete rock mass excavatability assessment using a suite of geological and geotechnical properties was then performed using three methods: RMR System; Modified Rippability Rating; and a productivity estimation method. These three methods should be applied during the investigation and design stages of a project. The preliminary assessments show that most of the open pit rock mass is expected to be rippable. The complete assessment differentiates weak, fair and good rock masses within the open pit. Weak rock mass exists along the Globe-Progress Shear zone, located along the northern and eastern pit walls and also in the western pit wall where the Chemist Shop Fault is located are both regions are expected to be diggable. Relatively weak rock mass also exists along the Globe-Progress Shear axial hinge. The Globe-Progress Shear limbs are generally fair to good rock where moderate to hard ripping should be expected.

The Geological Resource Map of New Zealand (GERM) is a computerised inventory of aggregate, mineral, coal, petroleum and thermal water occurrences, containing summary information on location, production, geology, and geochemistry. The types of occurrences include quarries, mines, gold dredges, wells, outcrops, seeps, springs, and fields. The file contains entries for about 10,300 sites and is used to produce tables of data and maps at any scale, for single or multiple commodities. The published format is the New Zealand 'Geological Survey map series Geological Resource Map of New Zealand 1:250 000'. Seventeen of the 27 map sheets covering New Zealand were published by August 1991, with three more close to publication.

Gold rush histories are usually written as though they were unique events in the development of a region or nation. While this is a valid way of looking at gold rushes, it is not the only way. This paper is a brief attempt to relate the West Coast rushes to a wider context. During the second half of the nineteenth century the lure of gold transformed the Pacific Rim. Gold rushes drew more than half a million Europeans and Americans to lands bordering the Pacific. By 1900 a chain of mining, industrial and urban centres ran from California to Alaska; from Ballarat to New Guinea, and on to Western Australia. The New Zealand rushes were a significant chapter in this story. People, cargo and information passed from rush to rush. Techniques learned on earlier goldfields were imported; those developed in New Zealand were, in turn, taken up elsewhere. Administrative systems and regulations developed in Australia were implemented in New Zealand, improved and passed on to Canada. This interconnectedness was so strong that gold-seekers thought of the mining regions as a distinct culture, 'the whole digging world'. Much can be made of the similarities shared by rushes. But comparison can also highlight the individuality of each rush. +The early days of the West Coast rushes were perhaps the strongest assertion of a diggers' culture. A brief period in which a remarkable orderliness was created through mateship, self-regulation, and the occasional threat of rough justice. The West Coast rushes were both a unique experience and an integral part of a process which transformed the Pacific Rim during the nineteenth century. Understanding their part in that bigger story highlights just how unique they were.

"Ore mineralogy and texture are primary variables controlling mill recovery efficiency in flotation plants. However, tracking daily variations of key mineralogical characteristics such as species-by-species liberation is not possible with current on stream analysers and assay lab techniques. In addition, traditional plant mineralogical analysis limited by long data turn-around times from central analysis laboratories typically provides only a time-averaged view of mill performance, e.g. by means of monthly composite feed, con or tailings analysis.This paper presents the results of a development and first field test of an on-site Automated Mineralogy solution (MLA or QEMSCAN) with the specific goal of monitoring recovery variation, ore quality and flotation performance on a mineral species-by-species and day-by-day basis, from up to twelve million direct particle observations per month. The trial was performed at a Pb/Zn-Ag operation in the US from November 2012 to April 2013. The focus of the study was three-fold: to validate the robustness of equipment and operational procedures for daily use by mine site technicians at a remote mine site to develop a methodology to boil down hundred-thousands of Automated Mineralogy particle data from size-by-size con and tailings samples to a couple of numbers meaningful to chief metallurgists to monitor recovery trend changes and correlate these to changes in the feed properties and/or flotation efficiency.The study focused primarily on the Pb/Ag rougher-concentrator circuit. Ten polished blocks of two and three size fractions of con and tailings were prepared by mine site technicians during a daily twelve hour shift. Eight hours of daily measurement time by the instrument revealed an estimate of the dayÆs recovery performance, ore quality and flotation performance for Freibergite (Ag-species) and Galena (Pb-species), within 36 hours from initial sampling. Data quality was assessed by means of calculated versus measured assay reconciliation. Cumulative sum curves of recovery performance, ore quality and flotation performance reveal trend changes with a frequency of 1 to 4 weeks. These were correlated to cumulative sum curves of e.g. locked and slimed particle classes of the mineral species of interest, attempting to identify a possible root cause of recovery performance trend changes. Even though most major operating companies in the minerals industry have Board-level endorsed sustainability principles and objectives, design engineers typically have no mechanism that allows them to implement those objectives in their work. In addition, the existing project management systems do not readily deliver the innovative solutions needed to address key sustainability issues, such as those related to significantly reduced carbon emissions, minimal environmental impacts, and maintaining the societal ‘licence to operate’. SUSOP® (SUStainable OPerations) is an approach for the integration of sustainable development principles into the design of mineral processes, which has been developed through the Co-operative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP). Somewhat analogous to the well entrenched HAZOP (Hazard and Operability) studies, SUSOP® is a holistic, systematic and rigorous mechanism for identifying and assessing sustainability opportunities and risks at each stage of project development - from corporate planning, through design and operation, to decommissioning and rehabilitation – without compromising financial rigour. SUSOP® was developed, tested and enhanced through its application to real case studies in the minerals industry. This development path provided significant insights into the process of identifying and evaluating opportunities for improving an operation’s contribution to sustainability and its long-term business case.This paper will discuss the need for a methodical approach for integrating sustainability principles into mineral processing plant design, present the key elements of SUSOP®, and outline its development path through real case studies. In addition, the reasons why such an approach will have growing importance into the future will be raised.

In the past two and a half years, over 40 000 metalliferous mining and related services personnel have been trained through an Australian Generic Safety Induction system. This is almost half of AustraliaÆs metalliferous mining related workforce. This remarkable industry acceptance and delivery of safety courses is supported by Acacia Resources, Great Central Mines, Homestake, Newcrest Mining and WMC Resources, amongst hundreds of other mining, exploration and major contracting and services companies. MARCSTA; the Mining and Resources Contractors Safety Training Association (a pro-active not-for-profit self-help group of 24 major contracting companies) developed this generic safety induction. MARCSTA set out to find the æcommon groundÆ necessary to help address the evident safety problems and cost of re-training that were plaguing development of an internationally competitive and productive export industry. The incredible expansion of Australian mining during the decade fuelled a need for out-sourcing, resulting in much larger numbers of contractors on-site. At the same time, changes within Australian legislation, community expectations and the development of huge fly-in/fly-out operations and widespread skills shortages led to a rapid labour turnover and a higher paid workforce. Many Australian mining houses also ran international operations, particularly in South East Asia and head hunted people across the world. The skill levels fluctuated and fell at some local operations. Employers could no longer rely on systematic in-house training of permanent employees to improve safety and productivity as workers could and often did move on. Serious discrepancies in both quality and quantity of safety induction training and work practices occurred. Repetitive, boring and ineffective safety training became an embarrassing and costly burden for companies and workers alike. Then a spate of mining deaths sparked highly publicity, workforce concern and a demand for improvement from government, unions and corporate stakeholders. MARCSTA recognised it had to develop a high-quality safety-training program to satisfy the needs of all employers and be acceptable to others within the industry. This induction system had to be flexible enough to meet differences in legislation between states and industry sectors and be portable to enable cost and time savings for the new transient workforce. Changes in the last two years as a result of evaluating and incorporating various Taskforce inquiries into underground mining fatalities later led to the development of the MARCSTA Underground Safety Induction. This logical development added to the run away success of MARCSTAÆs General Safety Induction and was seen to be essential for many surface mines that were planning to develop underground operations. There are many lessons that MARCSTA learnt during its development that Pacific and South East Asian mining operations can benefit from. The most important of these are the support of stakeholders within industry and the recognition of higher safety and health expectations from workers and government. This goes hand-in-hand with the productivity and return on investment expectations of companies and their shareholders.

Active geothermal fields show many of the characteristics seen in hydrothermal ore deposits but there are important differences as well. There are, for example, many differences in geology and chemistry between individual geothermal fields, even some nearby, and these include variations in host rock types (volcanic, sedimentary, plutonic and metamorphic), structures controlling fluid flow (normal, lateral, and, rarely, reverse faulting occur) and hydrological setting (valleys to elevated terrain).
