Separation of Nickel and Cobalt from Manganese, Magnesium and Calcium by Synergistic Solvent Extraction - From Batch Tests to Pilot Plant Operation The synergistic solvent extraction system consisting of Versatic 10/LIX63/TBP was used for the separation and purification of nickel and cobalt from synthetic laterite leach solution after iron removal. Very encouraging results were obtained for separating nickel and cobalt from manganese, magnesium and calcium. In batch tests, the organic composition of the synergistic system was optimised and very large synergistic shifts for nickel and cobalt were observed. The ?pH50(Mn-Co) and ?pH50(Mn-Ni) values were as large as 1.65 and 2.40, respectively. The extraction and stripping kinetics of nickel and cobalt was fast. Semi continuous extraction tests were conducted with a pH profile of 5.5/6.1/6.5 in three stages at 40¦C. The nickel and cobalt extractions reached 99.9 per cent with only 5 mg/L Ni and <1 mg/L Co left in the raffinate. With two stages of scrubbing, only 2 mg/L Mn and less than 1 mg/L Mg and Ca were left in the scrubbed organic solution. With two stripping stages, the stripping efficiencies of Ni and Co reached over 95 per cent. A fully continuous pilot plant operation was conducted successfully for 280 hours. With an O/A ratio of about 2 and a pH profile of 5.5/5.8/6.0/6.3 for the four stages EX1/EX2/Ex3/EX4, both nickel and cobalt were almost completely extracted. Using a pH profile of 5.4/5.0 for SC1/SC2, the manganese scrubbing efficiency was over 96 per cent. Using three strip stages, over 98 per cent Ni and 99 per cent Co were stripped with only 64 mg/L Ni in the stripped organic solution. The nickel concentration in the loaded strip liquor reached 83 g/L, resulting in a ?Ni of over 28 g/L. The chemical stability of the system was also assessed over 12 weeks under proposed industrial operating conditions. Operation exclusively under strip conditions at 50¦C and 40¦C resulted in LIX63 oxime half lives of 1.1 and 2.1 years, respectively. Operation exclusively under extract conditions at 50¦C and 40¦C resulted in oxime half lives of 0.26 and 0.82 years, respectively. Losses of Versatic 10 were less than four per cent.

A method for the determination of microgram quantities of uranium in leachates from low grade uranium ores is described. Solubilized manium is purified by transfer to an organic solvent by a selective solvent extractionprocedure using tributyl phosphate, iso-octane, and aluminium nitrate. The organic phase is mixed with scintillation fiuors in toluene and the radioactive decay determined in a liquid scintillation counter. The method is sensitive and reproducible in the range 3-30 µg uranium.

So many emergencies that crop up in mining necessitate a departure from ordinary methods that the writer has been led to illustrate a few of the examples that have come under his notice during a somewhat lengthy career; and as most of the methods illustrated are certainly outside the ordinary, it may be hoped that while to many they may convey little that is new, to the larger number some acceptable information may be gleaned whenever the occasion calls for it. Experience has shown that there can be no hard and fast rule in mine timbering that will fit the varying- necessities of different localities, and the engineer must divest his mind of all prejudices that his practice of any particular system or systems may have induced, and must direct his attention to the character of the local timber and its fitness or otherwise for the purpose he has in view. Fortunate indeed are the man and mine that can claim an abundance of good and cheap mining timber it simplifies, oftentimes, what would be, under unfavourable timber conditions, a difficult problem. In many parts of the States there is either none or at best a scrub if the latter, he has to either pigstye, balk, or bulkhead, if his ground will permit; if, not, and the necessary timber has to be imported, then some system of recovering his timber and using it over and over again may be possible. The design of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill based comminution circuits for the treatment of competent ores, similar to those at Geita and Boddington, involves the same process of sample selection, test work, data analysis and data modelling/interpretation as that used for 'average' competency ores. However, over the past couple of years a number of issues have arisen that are common to the design of circuits for the comminution of 'highly' competent ores. The impact of these issues on project viability is generally more pronounced when treating hard ores than average to soft ores due to the greater impact on capital and operating costs. The issues encountered have included: standard test procedures have been modified; test equipment has worn or been damaged; different procedures yield different data and varying interpretation; and modelling and empirical calculations have been based on poor benchmarks, or used incorrectly in the case of JKSimMet, yielding misleading outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to present, discuss and clarify some of the issues associated with conducting test work and designing comminution circuits for the treatment of 'highly' competent ores in order to reduce thelevel of conflict arising from interpretation and application of test work data. Specifically, the issues associated with the bond crushing (impact) and rod work indices measurement, the various SAG mill specific energy tests, and the interpretation of the resulting data will be discussed in the context of case studies.

Assmang Khumani Iron Ore Mine is exploiting the iron ore deposits that can be found in the Bruce-King-Mokaning farm areas in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The Bruce, King and Mokaning (Khumani) deposits are approximately 10 km south of the town Kathu, adjacent to the Sishen Mine. Assmang Limited is jointly owned and controlled by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited.Measurement, calculation and trending of plant throughput and chemical ore properties are critical in maintaining a successful beneficiation operation due to these values forming the basis of decision-making and thus promotion of efficient ore extraction. The Khumani management and engineering information system (MEIS) supplies information on key process parameters to an operational team and is required to do so within an optimal time frame, for maximum impact.Diverse data is put into the MEIS from multiple specialist systems, with interfaces that require manual intervention. Manual intervention is resource and time intensive to the point which limits the effect on the process and decreases the potential for value addition.Automation of interfaces decreases resource and time requirements, standardising plant wide data sources and providing the opportunity to provide specialist system data to decision-makers in a timely fashion, resulting in maximum impact on the process output.Engineering and metallurgical management systems were interfaced at Khumani Iron Mine by means of an automated table which facilitates the transfer of production data validated within the engineering system as input to the metal accounting system. THE old mill erected by the .Irvinebank Company consisted of 10 heads of stamps (850 lb.), rock-breaker, Hartz jig, two Krupp tables, two Luhrig vanners, three sand-pumps, one mixer; six flotation vessels, and the necessary settlers. Power was supplied by a small colonial-type boiler, and 10-in. x 15-in Tangye engines. The ore was darted from the mines to the mill and hand-fed, into the rock-breaker, and the broken product elevated into the batter bins and fed into the stamps, the pulp from the stamps passing to a classifier, the spigot to jig, tables, and vanners, the overflow from the classifier passing to settlers. After the removal of bismuth-wolfram concentrates, the pulp was pumped to the molybdenite flotation plant and the olybdenite recovered by flotation.A commencement was made with the erection of the first unit (20 heads) of the new mill in August, 1917, and milling and concentrating commenced in February, 1919.

Mr Kapp's paper helps considerably to clarify the subsidence/mine geometry relationships in New South Wales. It is in the best tradition of the presentation of field investigations such as has built up internationalknowledge over the years.The Author has plotted in Fig. 10, the maximum subsidence developed over each of a number of panels of different width/depth ratios and concludes that the maximum possible subsidence over a super critical extractionarea is around 0.65 of the mining height and that this is reached with the critical width/depth ratio of extraction of around 1.5.Although, as Mr. Kapp says, the maximum possible subsidence in the UK can reach 90% of the seam thickness extracted the more usual figure for the first seam is up to 80%. It has also been found in the UK that with shallow workings such as those at Kemiro Coliery the critical width of extraction is 2.0 or more times the depth.

Every automatic citizen is an automatic recipient of a miner's right under the present Mining Act (Chapter 195), but this alone does not entitle any automatic citizen to mine for minerals on any land, even his customary group's land. Without complying with requirements of the Mining Act, any automatic citizen who engages in mining solely on the basis of a miner's right would be mining illegally. He would also be engaged in illegal mining if he mines on customary or other non-government land. Even if mining is legally pursued by an automatic citizen, he does not acquire ownership of minerals without first making the required royalty payments to the State.

ignitions caused by cutting tools have occurred at a rate of some 14 per year in UK coal mines since 1965, mostly on the coalface. The rate has held steady despite reducing output and number of collieries. Investigations were carried out over this period into factors affecting both the concentration of firedamp in the cutting zone and the igniting source. A study into detecting and suppressing ignitions on shearers has been undertaken and it is feasible to prevent certain ignitions from spreading outside the cutting zone. Practical measures have been adopted by British Coal to identify frictional ignition sites and to lay down working procedures to minimise risk.

A geologic, petrographic and geochemical study has been performed on the pyroclastic flow deposits in the coastal area of East Zhejiang Province, Southeast China. This study leads to classification of the pyroclastic flow deposits into three associations: the extrusive type, the surge type and the ash flow type welded tuff associations. Through detailed investigation and comparison of the characteristics of these lithologic associations, with emphasis on the welded tuffs, a comprehensive model has been proposed to demonstrate the petrogenesis of the pyroclastic flow deposits.

Detailed investigation was carried out on the dephosphorization of a number of phosphorus-rich manganese or samples of India by leaching with dilute sulphuric acid. Various process parameters like concentration of acid, liquid-solid ratio, temperature of leaching, time of leaching, and particle size of the ore were studied in detail for the three samples of manganese ore from central India, and optimum values were worked out on a laboratory scale. Preliminary studies show that certain ores which are not easily amemlible to appreciable dephosphorization by leaching with dilute sulphuric acid can be made amenable by :roasting to 700-900°C before leaching.

Pyrrhotite crystallises as either a hexagonal or monoclinic structure, both of which can occur in ore deposits. In general, pyrrhotite is not considered as a valuable mineral unless it contains considerable amounts of other metals like nickel or copper. In fact it causes numerous problems in flotation including intensive oxygen consumption, which results in poor selectivity among sulphide minerals in the processing of complex sulphide ores. Also, because of its high sulphur content, pyrrhotite is a major contributor to environmentally detrimental sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions from smelters. Pyrrhotite also interacts galvanically with grinding media via electrolyte species present in the flotation pulp, resulting in media corrosion. The most effective way to reject pyrrhotite is through a separation stage, which may be difficult when both types of pyrrhotite are present in the ore. In this regard depression of pyrrhotite through a flotation stage may be applied. Pyrrhotite depression by either intensive oxidation or by using sodium cyanide has been practiced. Results present in this work show that NaCN can depress pyrrhotite effectively when combined with an alkaline environment and low collector concentrations.

Stream sediment geochemical analyses from 140 mining company exploration surveys of the Coromandel, Northwest Nelson, Marlborough and Westland regions of New Zealand have been compiled from open file reports and entered on a database called REGCHEM (for Regional Exploration GeoCHEMistry). REGCHEM is supported by GEOEXPL, a custom-written computer software application which operates under the Microsoft Access relational database management system on a PC-type computer, The data are plotted as maps using the MapInfo geographic information system (GIS) package. Thresholds separating anomalous values from background values are determined using the PROBPLOT uni-variant statistical package, which enables the discrimination and modelling of several populations. Relevant REGCHEM data are being incorporated into a GIS for the Coromandel region as part of ongoing studies to develop mineral deposit and metallogenic models for the region, and to assess regional prospectivity.

The additional information that Clarke and Taylor (1982) provide about the important but poorly documented Ardlethan deposit is, of course, very welcome. However their contention that structural considerations, in conjunction with petrology, alter the interpretation of the mineralogical and geochemical data presented previously (Scott, 1981) is not accompanied by adequate supporting evidence. Indeed characteristics of the orebodies studied invalidate their arguments.Heterogeneity between matrix and fragments is not a problem in the South Cherry and Ardwest orebodies because most samples are comprised entirely of interlocking hydrothermal assemblages with a fabric and mineralogy that is uniform through both former breccia fragments and matrix. In hand specimen, the rock superficially resembles altered granite and, as indicated by Clarke and Taylor (1982), a brecciated texture is difficult to discern. In thin section, relict brecciated textures can be observed as localized changes in the grainsize or in the distribution of minerals that outline former breccia fragments (P. J. Eadington, 1982, personal communication).Because of the intense brecciation and comminution of rocks (fragments < 10 mm are usual) in the South Cherry and Ardwest breccia bodies, hydrothermal recrystallization was complete, resulting in homogenization of fragments and matrix. Furthermore, the amount of sample analysed (-100 g for drill core and 2-3 kg for hand specimens) is sufficiently large to be representative of both former breccia fragments and matrix. The Carpathia and Stackpool orebodies, with their abundance of sedimentary fragments, have alteration superimposed on a heterogeneous fabric, and were not studied. Thus the problems of differentiating between fragments and matrix (Clarke and Taylor, 1982) are irrelevant to the particular orebodies described in my paper.Within the alteration halo, which is several hundred metres wide (Paterson, 1976), the very uniformity of the alteration assemblages implies that subsequent, postmineralization brecciation is of only minor significance.Indeed tourmaline pipes in the Ardwest pit are less than several metres across (Clarke, 1979) and produce minimal alteration in the surrounding rocks. Therefore the interpretation of the mineralogical zonation is not compromised by the recognition of several periods of brecciation.

TheSouthern Alps in the South Island of New Zealand are currently rising rapidly as a consequence of continental collision along the Pacific-Australian plate boundary. Rapid uplift has resulted in a major thermal anomaly in the shallow crust beneath the alps. Alpine topography and associated intense precipitation, coupled with the thermal anomaly are responsible for vigorous combined topographic/convective circulation of water through the shallow crust.   Uplift is greatest in a wedge-shaped region between the Alpine Fault and an associated second-order backthrust system, the Main Divide Fault Zone, approximately 20 km to the east. The Main Divide Fault Zone is segmented into NNE and NE striking faults, which are regionally sub-parallel to the Alpine Fault, but dip northwest in the opposite direction. Reverse oblique-slip on the Main Divide Fault is in an easterly direction, with a greater component of strike-slip movement on the NE trending faults. Elevated topography in the Mt Cook region is related to thrusting of a relatively homoclinal sequence of semi-schistose rocks on top of lower-grade greywacke, which controls the position of the Main Divide. Tectonically induced fluid flow resulted in only minor alteration and hydrothermal mineralisation of fault-rocks in Alpine and Main Divide Faults, and localised deposition of quartz and/or carbonate in the immediate hangingwall.   The wedge between the Alpine and Main Divide Faults is segmented by third-order structures north of the Mount Cook region. A series of right-lateral (-085/700S) and left-lateral (-150/600SW) faults, which are synthetic and antithetic to the Alpine Fault, respectively, developed as a conjugate set during uplift. Fluid-flow in the Southern Alps is controlled by these third-order fault/fracture systems. Cu-Au mineralisation, hydrothermal veins, and surface hot spring activity are localised by third-order fault/fractures and appears to be enhanced where conjugates intersect.

During a mineral exploration program in an environmentally sensitive area nearMount Painter in South Australia, a helicopter was used to position, construct and service drilling rigs in order to avoid the need to create new access tracks. The drilling program was designed to optimise the advantages of natural landforms in order to minimise the environmental impact of site construction and drilling activities. This minimisation of land disturbance reduced the required amount of rehabilitation measures to the extent where all impacts of the helicopter-supported programme had disappeared within 12 months of completion of work.
