The emission of seam gases into underground workings in coal mines is acknowledged as a major hazard, particularly methane due to its possible ignition. Acknowledge of seam gas parameters is important for the prediction of gas emission rates into the ventilating air current. They are also important as the basis for the evaluation of the likely contained gas as a possible energy source.   Gas content determinations for the Kupakupa seam have been made at the Huntly West Mine.  Applying the method of Creedy (1986) to face samples, gas contents of 1.80 and 1.66 have been determined. Using desorbed and residual gas content data a content of 1.92 m3/t has been derived. These are on an ash included basis. Calculations using the adsorption equation of Kim (1977) and coal quality have given a gas content of 2.19 m3 t. Long-hole exploration drilling at Huntly West Mine has provided information on gas pressure. A pressure rise test has given a reading of 500 kPa (absolute); this is low compared with the pressure given for the determined gas content from theoretical adsorption isotherms.

The injection of grouting compounds into the consolidated rock surrounding underground mine workings has long been practiced for the purpose of sealing against water flows. In more recent times however, grout injection has also found application for the purpose of rock mass reinforcement. Mines in Europe,America, Australia and elsewhere now make use of significant quantities of chemical grouts in both preventative and remedial strata control work.   Despite the increasing usage of grouting for these purposes, there is limited knowledge about the effects of grout injection on the rock mass, and acceptance of the method is by no means universal. In some cases grouting has been applied with little understanding of the factors that control its effectiveness, and disappointing results have been obtained.   This paper reviews the basic concepts of how grout injection may contribute to the control of rock surrounding underground mine excavations, and highlights the factors which may serve to limit the efficacy of the method and the uncertainties that complicate the appraisal of grouting as a method of strata control.

This paper demonstrates use of remotely sensed imagery in promoting sustainable mining. Remote sensing technology can be used during all phases of a mining project û from evaluating the resource, to making extraction more cost-effective, through to monitoring, mine closure and remediation. Use of the new generation of satellite platforms with the capability of acquiring satellite data with higher spectral and spatial resolution have the capability to emerge as essential indicator for sustainable development in the minerals industry. A life cycle approach to satellite imagery is discussed. The use of an imagery of the site prior to mining activity establishes the environmental baseline, guides mitigation measures and eventual help in suggesting remediation. Remote imagery provides the cost-effective means of monitoring reclamation, including the growth of planted vegetation, of the mine site and surrounding area. The latest advancements in satellite remote sensing are highlighted to meet the newer challenges of sustainable mining practices. Some of the worldwide successful remote sensing applications for the measurement and evaluation of the sustainable development impact of mining operations are described. Presently available source of imagery and its comparative advantages and disadvantages are provided as a guide. Finally, the limitations of this tool are indicated.

The Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation (Phu Kham) is located in northern Laos, approximately 140 kilometres from the capital, Vientiane. The operation is a producing asset for Australian-based copper and gold producer, PanAust Limited (PanAust) and is operated by Lao-registered company, Phu Bia Mining Limited (Phu Bia Mining). PanAust holds a 90 % interest in Phu Bia Mining. The Government of Laos owns the remaining 10 %.The Phu Kham Operation has recently undergone a series of process improvements to treat the anticipated competent ores scheduled for 2017 and 2018. The operation’s comminution circuit, which comprises a semi-autogenous (SAG) mill and two ball mills, each with 13 megawatts (MW) of installed power, was expected to be SAG mill limited when treating competent basement rock. Ausenco Services Pty Ltd (Ausenco), was engaged to help optimise and enhance the productivity of the Phu Kham comminution circuit over an eight-month period. The work involved participating in and overseeing the redesign of the SAG mill liner systems and developing operational strategies for maximising throughput through to the end of mine life. Ausenco’s comminution optimisation tool, Ausgrind, was used to benchmark and analyse plant data with empirical models, predict circuit performance for varying ore characteristics and evaluate liner wear and predict the life for varying operating parameters. Variances between the actual and the predicted values were assessed in detail to identify missed opportunities, and guiding operating parameters were redefined to maximise throughput and productivity. In combination with the redesigned liner system, optimised process controls for varying ore competencies, and improved operational practices and troubleshooting strategies, increased Phu Kham overall production, exceeding the milling capacity when treating competent ores. The Plumduff sinter occurs at Whenuaroa, near Puhipuhi, approximately 30 km north of Whangarei. It is one of three residual sinters in the southern portion of a mid- to late-Pliocene geothermal system. The deposit consists of many large sinter breccia boulders, including rudrocks (coarse breccias), scattered around the flanks and summit of the small conical hill of Plumduff. Three types of sinter breccia occur: (i) rudrocks consisting of large, angular to sub-angular clasts of layered sinter up to 0.8 m across, as well as smaller clasts of sinter (20 - 100 mm dia), and fragments of stromatolitic structures; all clasts are supported in a matrix of microcrystalline, transparent to translucent to milky quartz; (ii) fragments of layered angular to irregularly mottled sinter of white to grey or bluish hue supported in a translucent to opaque silica matrix; (iii) smaller, matrix-supported breccias with clasts both partially surrounded and/or penetrated, by a clay-like weathering rind, and sinter conglomerates with rounded to oblate clasts. Three principal types of fabrics constitute the bulk of the sinter: (i) stromatolites, including columnar, palisade and filamentous networks, showing progressive silicification, in fenestral, tufted to clotted fabrics; (ii) peloids and pisoids; (iii) plant-rich facies in which various silicified plant species occur in a silica matrix. All fabrics have counterparts in hot spring deposits in the Taupo Volcanic Zone formed at temperatures from 75¦C to 35¦C. Also present is steam-condensate-produced alteration: kaolinite and alunite as well as boulders of quartz lattice texture. Cinnabar only occurs in sinter on the north and south central slopes of the hillside. No quartz veins or geyserite were recognised.

On the Kinetics and Equilibrium Models for Biosorption of Ni(II) onto a Gram-Positive Bacteria Strain, Rhodococcus opacus, for Environmental Applications The aim of this fundamental study was to evaluate the biosorption of Ni(II) from aqueous solution streams onto a Rhodococcus opacus strain through kinetics and equilibrium isotherms studies. The biosorption of nickel achieved its highest value in a pH around 5. The experimental data evaluation was carried out focusing three two-parameter models, as: Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin - Radushkevich. In order to determine the best isotherm fit, three error analysis methods were used to assess the data: correlation coefficient (R2), residual root mean square error (RMSE) and Chi-square test. The error analysis established that the Freundlich model fits better the nickel biosorption data. Maximum uptake capacity of nickel reached a value around 7.63 mg.g-1 for R. opacus. The biosorption rate was fast and achieved a removal of around 79 per cent of Ni(II) in the first 5 minutes at room temperature (25 ¦ 2¦C). The experimental kinetics data was evaluated considering two models (pseudo-second order and pseudo-first order). The error analysis established that the pseudo-second order model better fits the data.

The invention of the traditional belt and idler conveyor system is attributed to Thomas Robins in 1892. This basic concept, ubiquitous in most mining operations, has not changed markedly in 125 years and still suffers from five forms of energy losses. Firstly, Wheeler, Roberts and Jones (2004) showed that indentation rolling losses, a consequence of the indentation a roller inflicts on the belt, consume 60 per cent of all energy. Secondly, Wheeler (2006) explained that bulk solid flexure resistance resulting from material interaction and movement absorbs 20 per cent. The remaining energy is lost by idler rotating resistance (5 per cent), belt flexure resistance (5 per cent) and secondary resistances (10 per cent).Traditional conveyor systems are continuous as opposed to batch systems, implying both positive and negative features. On one hand, continuous systems have high availability (available infers ‘ready to run’), but, on the other, utilisation of availability is often low; for example, when a conveyor is running empty or below capacity. This converts into reduced system OEE (overall effective efficiency). Many attempts have been made to mitigate energy losses and low OEE issues, including development of rail-based systems. The key drawbacks have been higher capital cost, low flexibility, poor availability and lack of market acceptance.A recent conceptual development known as the ‘autonomous rail conveyor’ (ARC) promises to address issues of energy loss and poor availability and provide increased flexibility by offering solutions for difficult applications. The ARC uses a series of interconnected skeletal bogies covered with a conventional conveyor belt as a load bed running on relocatable light rail. The bogeys have two axles, each driven by integrated variable speed-geared motor and brake systems, and are connected to previous/next bogeys by specialised couplers. Power is provided by a generator (located in a dedicated bogey) and ‘daisy chain’ plug in cables. Centralised redundant control is provided at a preferred point. Although the system is batch in nature, the number of carriages and trains is flexible, meaning that the system is effectively continuous. Loading is achieved by feeding the ARC from a perpendicularly oriented apron feeder, while material off-loading is accomplished by a twist-dump operation in which the belt is twisted through an angle of 50° below the horizontal, causing material to flow from the belt into a receiving conveyor.The ARC system can run multiple trains over any distance, although benefits are more significant in distances of over two kilometres. Capital and operating costs are predicted to be lower than competitive products, with planned maintenance being simple to perform.CITATION:Graham, T, 2017. Quartz, adularia and clay minerals from low-sulfidation epithermal veins at Hishikari were analyzed for their oxygen and hydrogen stable isotope compositions to establish the source of paleohydrothermal waters. Positive correlation between Au-Ag and adularia: quartz ratio, the presence of quartz pseudomorphs of bladed calcite, and Au-bearing smectite and vermiculite is indicative, but not definitive, evidence for the control of boiling on ore mineralization. Oxygen isotope equilibrium temperatures between quartz and adularia are about 220¦C and average homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions vary between 190 to 210¦C. The calculated d18OH2O and dDH2O values (from quartz, adularia and early smectite) are consistent with paleohydrothermal fluids that were a mixture of magmatic and meteoric waters, or alternatively, the values could derive from heated meteoric water which had undergone isotope exchange during circulation through basement rock. Overall, d18Oqtz values in veins increase toward the north, most likely reflecting palaeo-fluid flow (source).

Lump ore is one of the key ferrous materials used in the blast furnace ironmaking process, typically accounting for 5–25 per cent of the blast furnace ferrous burden. Like other ferrous materials, the characteristics of lump ore have an important impact on stable operation and productivity of a blast furnace. As the cold burden lands on the top of the hot burden in the furnace and descends, it is inevitably subjected to thermal shock, which will likely lead to breakdown of the lump particles, or decrepitation and affect the gas permeability inside the blast furnace adversely. An ISO decrepitation test has therefore been developed to assess this behaviour of lump ore. However, the results obtained according to the existing standard decrepitation test method vary considerably between laboratories even for the same lump ore. To improve the test procedure of the existing decrepitation test, this paper first discusses the mechanisms leading to decrepitation and then studies the factors affecting lump ore decrepitation. Understanding the key factors affecting lump ore decrepitation is particularly important to improve the existing test procedure that enables researchers to achieve a higher degree of precision when conducting the decrepitation test.CITATION:Lu, L, Adam, M, Hapugoda, S and Kilburn. Bioremediation of Acid Mine Water Using Fly Ash and Desulfotomaculum nigrificans One of the major concerns for the mining industry especially after the mine closure is the generation of acid mine drainage (AMD), and its discharge into the environment surrounding the abandoned mines, leading to serious environmental pollution. AMD is usually characterized by high concentration of dissolved metal ions, sulfate and low pH. The efficacy of fly ash was assessed for the removal of metal ions such as iron, zinc and copper as well as sulfate from synthetic acid mine water. Complete removal of ferric and ferrous, 80 per cent of Zn, 83 per cent of Cu and 62 per cent sulfate removal could be achieved, with a concomitant increase in the pH value from 2.3 to 7 using fly ash as an adsorbent under appropriate conditions. The free energy of adsorption of the metal ions onto fly ash was found to be negative, while the adsorption process was endothermic and adhered to the Lagergren pseudo-first order rate equation. Bioremediation studies using a typical sulfate reducing bacterium namely Desulfotomaculum nigrificans, after pre-treatment of the synthetic acid mine water with fly ash, cumulatively resulted in about 94 per cent zinc, 100 per cent copper and 90 per cent sulfate removal. The possible mechanisms of metal ion removal and sulfate reduction from acid mine water utilising Desulfotomaculum nigrificans are discussed.

The objective of a mine planning exercise is to plan a safe mine that maximises net present value (NPV) for the project. Two primary elements are key to design of a mine plan optimised to maximise profit: selection of an optimised production rate and selection of an optimised equipment fleet. Both depend upon accurate estimations of capital and operating costs for the equipment and for the life cycle of the mining operation. Once a trial production rate is determined, a primary equipment fleet, ie excavators, haulers, and blasthole drills, can be determined based on material characteristics and haulage distances and gradients. An auxiliary fleet, dozers, road maintainers, service trucks, etc can be determined using less rigid productivity criteria. With an equipment fleet determined, operating and support personnel can be assigned based on shift requirements and equipment operating needs; and material and supply requirements can be estimated. Knowing the areal dimensions of the major equipment items, road widths and repair shop dimensions can be determined. Personnel numbers and supply requirements determine the square metre sizes of offices, change rooms, and storage facilities. Reliable sources of capital and operating unit prices and costs for all these items are referenced in the paper. Once preliminary capital and operating cost estimates are calculated by applying unit costs to equipment, personnel, material and supply needs, potential profit can be tested using DCF techniques. An optimised mine plan can then be determined by testing the potential profitability of multiple mine production rates. Because of the economies of scale, full capital and operating cost estimates must be completed for each production rate in order to produce meaningful comparisons.

Two remediation strategies have been considered to reduce the levels of acidity and dissolved metals in acid mine drainage discharging from Sullivan Mine, West Coast, New Zealand. The oxidising strategy involves adding alkalinity and dissolved oxygen (DO) resulting in the precipitation of metallic oxides and decreased acidity. The reducing strategy involves removing DO, resulting in the precipitation of metallic sulfides, followed by addition of alkalinity to decrease acidity. Field remediation trials indicate a reducing system may be more effective for this site than an oxidising system. A residence time of only two hours in the limestone layer of a successive alkalinity producing system (SAPS) is sufficient to reduce acidity by 100 per cent, iron by 71 per cent, aluminium by 59 per cent, nickel by 38 per cent and manganese by 26 per cent. The proposed remediation plan will likely include a series of SAPS, followed by an anoxic limestone drain, and settling ponds to capture any remaining precipitates.

Under the Town and Country Planning Act 1977 the Ministry of Works and Development has a responsibility for providing information to local and regional planning authorities on public works and matters of national development and importance, for the exercise of their responsibilities under this Act. One such matter which has recently become a source of concern is the development of South Island lignite. In 1979 the Ministry of' Energy produced a position statement outlining a programme of' research leading to the possible extraction of lignite in Southland or Central Otago for conversion into about 50 per cent of New Zealand's liquid fuel requirements by 1995. Understandably this possibility has caused considerable concern at the local level, expressed particularly by bodies such as Federated Farmers and the local authorities. In the absence of any factual knowledge short of mere conjecture been able to recommend to local authorities is that they limit their planning period to ten years. After this time more information regarding the size, nature, location and certainty of the proposal will permit a more accurate assessment of the implications of the York. While on holiday earlier this year I took the opportunity to visit opencast mining areas in Germany and England to gain an appreciation of the scale of impacts involved and discuss with those concerned the procedures used in planning for such operations. What follows is a brief description of these operations, a comparison with the likely development in this country and the extraction of what may be some relevant principles of' operation for the planning of an environmentally acceptable project. This paper describes the key components of the Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) mine design and the development and construction status of the mine. Drawpoint production from GBC will be initiated in 2018 following the closure of the Grasberg open pit. Full production of 160 000 t/d is planned for 2024, which will make it a 20-year time period between initial access development in 2004 and full production.Diluted ore reserves are about 1 Bt at a grade of 1.0 per cent Cu and 0.78 g/t Au. The mine plans some 2400 drawpoints on a 20 m × 30 m drawbell spacing in a 700 000 m2 footprint using the El Teniente layout. The drawpoint opening sequence includes five production blocks, the first two of which are scheduled to be undercut simultaneously in 2018. Ore is transported using diesel-powered load-haul-dumps to a series of orepasses and then delivered via loading chutes to a rail haulage system, which delivers the ore to a three gyratory crusher complex. Crushed ore is transported to the mill stockpiles via dual inclined conveyors.Development and construction of the substantial fixed facilities are now well underway. Primary access for personnel and materials is via the 6 km Ali Boediardjo (AB) adits. A service shaft will hoist personnel and materials from the AB adits level to the various operating levels. Shaft commissioning is scheduled for late 2015. The rail haulage system installation and construction is in progress and is due to be commissioned in 2017, which is timed to coincide with the commissioning of the ore handling system. Ventilation is provided through a series of large intake and exhaust drifts, and two of the four main fans have been commissioned. A 1600 L/s pumping system will manage drainage from the mine.Other key facilities include separate shops for rail and rubber-tired equipment, warehousing, a powder magazine, a main control centre and an underground concrete batch plant.CITATION:Brannon, C A, Firdausi, H H, Pascoe, N D and Yuniar, A T, 2016.
