A distillate-bearing sand complex is often made up of sand stringers of different permeabilities. In order to take into account the influence of the different permeabilities, "parallel flow" is defined, and this concept is used to compute the recovery efficiency of recycling such a sand complex. In the first approximation the position of the wells with respect to one another is not considered. In order to compute the effect on the recovery efficiency of the position of the wells, the area of a field is considered to be made up of rectangles; each rectangle containing one input well in the center and two producers located symmetrically with respect to the input well. Formulas are given from which to obtain the pressure and streamlines in a steady-state flow. A method is devised to compute rapidly the successive positions of the dry gas front. If the field is irregular in shape, pressure and streamlines can be obtained by a potentio-metric electrical model study. By using the concept of "parallel flow" and the results obtained by mathematical analysis or by electrical model study for a homogeneous formation, the effects of different permeabilities and of the location of the wells can be established. From these studies it is apparent that the efficiency of recycling can be profoundly influenced by differences in permeability among the various parallel strata. Introduction With the discovery of an increasing number of gas-distillate fields in the Gulf Coast, engineers have had occasion to give more thought to the performance of these reservoirs, as evidenced by the literature published in recent years. In the majority of studies published so far the formations are considered to consist of uniform, homogeneous sand. In this paper the authors wish to bring out the effect of variations in the permeability of the formations on the over-all recovery efficiency of wet gas in cycling operations. The importance of the permeability profile is clearly indicated by the fact that in gas cycling, highly permeable stringers in an otherwise tight sand can allow complete displacement of wet by dry gas in these stringers long before the wet gas in the tight portions of the sand is displaced. This by-passing will be reflected by a reduction in the condensate content of the production sooner than can be anticipated from a mathematical analysis or an electrical model study on uniform sands. Electrical model studies or mathematical analyses cannot take into consideration the manifold variations of permeability within the reservoir. Experimental as well as analytical difficulties make it necessary to consider the prototype for either of these studies as a perfectly uniform sand. Mathematical analyses are applicable only when a reservoir can be divided into units of simple geometrical form, of uniform thickness throughout. Electric model studies are capable of giving information on reservoirs of any shape or thickness, but it is essential that the sand be considered homogeneous, so that three-dimensional flow can take place. Two computer-oriented techniques for simulating the three-dimensional flow behavior of two fluid phases in petroleum reservoirs were developed. Under the first technique the flow equations are solved to model three-dimensional flow in a reservoir. The second technique was developed for modeling flow in three-dimensional media that have sufficiently high permeability in the vertical direction so that vertical flow is not seriously restricted. Since this latter technique is a modified two-dimensional meal analysis, suitably structured three-dimensional reservoirs can be simulated at considerably lower computational expenses than is required using the three-dimensional analysis. A quantitative criterion is provided for determining when vertical communication is good enough to permit use of the modified two-dimensional areal analysis. The equations solved by both techniques treat both fluids as compressible, and, for gas-oil applications, provide for the evolution of dissolved gas. Accounted for are the effects of relative permeability, capillary pressure and gravity in addition to reservoir geomety and rock heterogeneity. Calculations are compared with laboratory waterflood data to indicate the validity of the analyses. Other results were calculated with both techniques which show the equivalence of the two solutions for reservoirs satisfying the vertical communication criterion. INTRODUCTION Obtaining the maximum profits from oil and gas reservoirs during all stages of depletion is the fundamental charge to the reservoir engineering profession. In recent years much quantitative assistance in evaluating field development programs has been provided by computerized techniques for predicting reservoir flow behavior. Because of the spatially distributed and dynamic nature of producing operations, automatic optimization procedures, such as those now in use for planning refining operations, are not now available for planning reservoir development. However, present mathematical simulation techniques do furnish powerful means for making case studies to help in planning primary recovery operations and in selecting and timing supplemental recovery operations. A number of methods have been reported which simulate the flow of one, two or three fluid phases within porous media of one or two effective spatial dimensions>-4 However, applying computer analyses to actual reservoirs have been limited mostly to two-dimensional areal or cross-sectional flow studies for two immiscible reservoir fluids. To obtain a three-dimensional picture of reservoir performance using such two-dimensional techniques, it has been necessary to interpret the calculations by combining somehow the results from essentially independent areal and cross-sectional studies. To the authors' knowledge, the only other three-dimensional computational procedure, in addition to those presented here, was developed by Peaceman and Rachford8 to simulate the behavior of a laboratory waterflood. Two computational techniques which may be used to simulate three-dimensional flow of two fluid phases are described in this paper. The first method, called the "three-dimensional analysis", employs a fully three-dimensional mathematical model that treats simultaneously both the areal and cross-sectional aspects of reservoir flow. A leastmsquare analysis procedure has been developed and applied for the study of the deviations in estimations of oil in place as given by the material-balance equations. The data used were those obtained from field observations on the Jones sand in the Schuler pool, Arkansas, and the Monroe dolomite in the Reed City pool, Michigan. Possible effects of water intrusion were taken into account by expressing the cumulative water influx in terms of various functions previously proposed in the literature. Formulas were developed and values calculated for the minimum deviations and minimal percentage deviations in the calculated volumes of oil in place from the average values, as could be obtained by suitable choice of the water encroachment and initial gas-cap volume parameters. The results show that the fluctuations in these calculated volumes are very insensitive to the values chosen for the rate of water intrusion and initial gas-cap volume, and hence cannot be safely used in discriminating between spurious values for these parameters and such as actually pertain to the producing reservoirs. Moreover, the exact form of the water-intrusion function seems to have but little effect on the fluctuations in the computed oil in place. Accordingly, it is concluded that the material-balance method does not of itself provide a satisfactory criterion for determining the basic physical unknowns of producing reservoirs or in making conclusive decisions regarding the production mechanism, unless independently established geological control data are available for eliminating unreasonable values for the reservoir parameters, even though they may still satisfy the material-balance formulas. If, however, from core or logging data the initial oil in place and the gas-cap volume can be established in advance, the material-balance formulas can be inverted to find the water intrusion. Moreover, by determining by such calculations the water-intrusion coefficient, the iuture production performance can then be predicted by the aid of the materiaI-balance formulas for specified operating conditions. This type of application may be of particular value in predicting the results of Pressure-maintenance operations. Introduction The evaluation of the forces acting upon an oil reservoir is a problem of considerable interest to the operator as an aid in determining the proper method of operation for the reservoir to obtain an optimum recovery of oil. In many pools, the nature and magnitude of the forces acting upon the reservoir remain unknown until an appreciable amount of ultimate recovery is obtained. To be of value to the operator, a reliable interpretation of reservoir performance should be available in the early life of the pool to permit an optimum plan of operation. Progress has been made in an understanding of reservoir behavior and the importance of the different factors involved. The material-balance method of estimating oil in place has been proposed as a tool in analyzing reservoir-performance problems.l The solution of such problems by this method ordinarily involves two or more unknown values relating to the nature of the reservoir, and the results

The results of an extensive experimental program relating to the effectiveness of gravel screens have been correlated. The factors considered in some detail include gravel size and condition of packing, sand size and size distribution, fluid velocity, fluid viscosity, and thickness and arrangement of grave! screens. Good agreement between calculated values based upon probability considerations and experimental results relating to the influence of the thickness of the gravel screen was obtained. All of these factors are treated in the correlation in order that their influence may be taken into account in ascertaining the characteristics of an effective gravel screen for a particular set of conditions. The details of the experimental program are not given in the present paper but a description of generalized behavior and typical experimental results are recorded in graphic form. Introduction Gravel screens have been placed in water and oil wells for a number of yearsl,2,3 with the dual objective of increasing the productivity and decreasing the entrance of sand into the well bore. An understanding of the factors controlling the effectiveness of gravel screens in this connection is of industrial interest because it will lead to the proper selection of gravel. Some of the fundamental considerations involved in the migration of sand through a coarser body of porous materials were investigated by Coberly and Wagner4 and further experimental work has been carried out by Gumpertz.5 Apparently the pertinent phenomena are somewhat complex and are influenced by many variables. The present paper deals with the prediction of the behavior of gravel screens under the conditions encountered in practice but does not attempt to discuss the experimental methods or results that were obtained as a background and upon which the prediction is based. Influence OF Gravel Screens upon Productivity The use of a gravel screen may increase the productivity of a well by increasing its effective diameter, and this constitutes one of the objectives of its use. The permeability of most gravels and coarse sands that are employed in practice is so large compared to that of the sand in place that relatively little loss in production rate will arise from the use of material fine enough to cause the desired resistance to sand migration. For example, in Fig. I is depicted the approximate variation in the permeability of closely sized spherical gravels under the conditions of packing likely to be encountered in screens. The dotted lines indicate the variation that might be found because of differences in packing. It should be realized that the permeability is not a single-valued function of the average grain diameter but is related to a large number of factors, including the size, the size distribution and the shapes of the particles. However, Fig. I does permit a rough estimation of the permeability of closely sized spherical gravels and shows that the permeability with even the smaller particles is very large compared to that of most petroleum production horizons.

COMPRESSION TESTS THE standard method of determining the crushing resistance of rocks consists of crushing prepared shapes under slow compression, and expressing the ultimate crushing resistance at the load causing failure in pounds per square inch of crossectional area perpendicular to the crushing force, with the height approximately equal to the diameter. One-inch cubes or cylindrical drill cores are commonly used. Cubes and drill cores are cut by a high-speed steel disk with diamond dust embedded in the edges, and running under a water spray. Such a saw will cut one square inch or more of hard stone per minute. An oiled, spherical, swivel compression block of small diameter should be used to equalize the pressure. Each sample is crushed between sheets of cardboard or blotting paper extending about one-half inch beyond the edges of the stone. A cloth is wrapped around it to prevent dangerous explosive shattering. It is probably preferable to place the swivel block below the specimen, with either a rigid head or another swivel block above. Whatever the arrangement, the conditions should be selected that will develop the maximum crushing strength of the specimen, even though its top and bottom planes may not be precisely parallel. The cardboard pads may be dispensed with if the ends of the specimens are polished smooth. The use of lead pads was discontinued because of the observed tendency to split the material. The samples are weighed and measured before breaking, and the density is calculated. Cubes that contain bedding planes or veinlets are usually placed with these vertical and parallel to the crushing force, in order to develop the maximum resistance possible. A number of compression tests were made on Canadian ores, by Forrest Nagler, of the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., and are listed alphabetically in Table 1. These tests were made on one inch cubes or on diamond-drill cores approximately one inch in diameter and one inch long. The drill cores represent virgin rock, while the cubes may have been previously weakened by explosives. Compression tests have been made in the Allis-Chalmers Milwaukee Laboratory on a number of ores and other materials. These are listed alphabetically in Table 2. In test No. 1339, on limestone from the Hanna Coal Co., comparison was made between 2 by 2-in. diamond-drill core segments and one-inch cubes cut from the cores in the same strata. Results for the cylinders are tabulated directly below those for the cubes. The bedding planes were normal to the compressive force in breaking the cylinders and parallel in breaking the cubes, which accounts for the lower strength obtained from the cylinders. The percentage of net linear compression at the ultimate pressure was measured in test No. 1055 for Fontana TVA quartzite as 0.30 for cube A, and 0.37 for cube D.

In western Argentina, in the Province of Mendoza and the Territory of Neuquen, there is a series of solid bitumen deposits which are claimed to be the most extensive in the world. In a linear belt 500 km (311 miles) long, roughly paralleling the axis of the Andes but occupying a variety of positions with respect to the orogenic structures, more than 100 outcrops have been reported. Approximately 70 of these have been prospected, and some mining has been planned or attempted for about half this number. Limited tonnage, high sulphur content, inaccessibility, labor shortages, and disastrous fires have taken a heavy toll among these operations, and in 1947, only 4 deposits were being actively mined, but 8 more were being explored and developed with a view to placing them in production. Inasmuch as these deposits are currently yielding a substantial fraction of Argentina's limited domestic supply of solid fuels, a brief account of the deposits and of the small industry based upon them will provide a commentary on Argentina's fuel problem. Character of Solid Bitumens The solid bitumens of Mendoza and Neuquen are petroleum derivatives, as is indicated by the following ultimate analysis : Constituents Per Cent Hydrogen.................... 6.8 Carbon...................... 82.4 Nitrogen..................... 1.6 Oxygen...................... 2.7 Sulphur...................... 2.2 Ash.......................... 4.3 100. 0 In physical appearance they bear a close resemblance to coal and are commonly called carbon. Their specific gravity has an extreme range of 1.10 to 1.777 in 36 samples weighed, but the average is between 1.14 and 1.24. The material is black, lustrous to dull, with blocky to sub-con-choidal fracture. Though brittle, the purest material is softer than anthracite and exhibits slightly more cohesion. This bituminous material is generally known as asfaltita or asphaltite, but definitive chemical studies indicate that the term asphaltite or grahamite can be applied correctly only to the exceptionally pure material of the Auca Mahuida district in Neuquen. Some other name should be used for the chemically variable bitumens found in all other districts, and the designation "asphaltitic pyrobitumen" has been proposed by Carlos A. S. Piscione.1 At the present time these bitumens are finding favor as solid fuel and as a gas-producing medium. They yield heat values of 8650 to 9750 cal,2 or 14,500 to 16,750 Btu per pound, and in consequence of their excellent heating qualities and the scarcity of imported coal, they are marketed as far away as Buenos Aires at a price of go to 95 pesos, or approximately $22 to 23, per metric ton. In burning, the material swells and decomposes into solid, fluid, and gaseous fractions which burn violently though nonexplosively. Its combustibility has been responsible for disasters and virtually complete destruction at Mina La Es-peranza and Mina Santa Marta, and for minor mishaps elsewhere, as at Mina Escondida in August 1947.

A consideration of the literature shows the inadequacy of Fick's Laws to describe the diffusion of hydrogen in steels below 400°C. These laws are modified an the assumption that hydrogen is delayed at fixed sites in the lattice. Approximate and exact solutions of the resulting nonlinear system are derived for simple geometrical shapes. The results qualitatively account for the observed anomalous behavior. Experimental methods for verifying the theory are suggested. 1 HIS paper presents a new analysis of the diffusion behavior of hydrogen in steel based on a physical model which supposes that hydrogen atoms wander in a random manner through the crystal lattice, but tend to get trapped or delayed at certain fixed sites uniformly distributed throughout the metal. These sites, which will be called traps, are regarded merely as potential wells of significantly greater depth than those encountered in regular regions of the crystal lattices and no assumptions are made concerning their nature or origin. The results of experimental studies of the diffusion of hydrogen in iron and steel have usually been reported in the literature in terms of a diffusion constant D derived under the assumptions that the hydrogen concentration C is governed by Fick's laws.1 Fig. I is a composite of published graphs of the man. ner in which the values of D, so derived, vary with temperature. It is convenient to consider this material in two categories; the high temperature results above 400°C, and the results at lower temperatures. The graphs 2, 3, 4, 5 in the first class lie within a factor of three of each other and are relatively consistent compared with the low-temperature values. There is an increasing divergence in values of D with decreasing temperature till at room temperature they are spread over three orders of magnitude. Small values of D have been obtained for work-hardened specimens.' It is evident that D is a function of other variables besides temperature in this range and that these neglected variables are in some way connected with the work hardening experienced by the specimen. In view of evidence for an interaction between hydrogen in solution and dislocations9'10 and adsorption on crack surfaces,' some doubts must be entertained about the validity of Fick's laws and their associated physical model of noninteracting particles in random motion through the medium. More direct evidence of their inapplicability to the diffusion of hydrogen in steel was first produced by Darken and smith." Consider the permeation of hydrogen through a plate of thickness a under a boundary concentration Co at the ingoing, and zero at the outgoing, face. ALTHOUGH the shooting of oil wells for the purpose of increasing production has been practiced since 1866, present-day shooting technique has been arrived at almost wholly by a process of trial and error. The difficulties attending either a theoretical analysis of the problem or an experimental attack become apparent when one actually embarks on a theoretical investigation or attempts to formulate an intelligent experimental program. The literature on the subject consists mainly of descriptions of current practice, scattered eye-witness accounts of events following the shooting of a well, and vague speculations on the mechanical processes involved. In contrast to quarry blasting, the results of oil-well shooting cannot be determined by means of visual inspection, and it is perhaps for this reason that only one attempt at what approaches a direct experimental attack has been reported in the literature.1 In these experiments, charges of liquid nitroglycerin were exploded in holes drilled in a sandstone outcrop. In order to observe the character and extent of the resulting fractures, the rock was blasted away so as to expose the original shot holes. After all this had been done it was found impossible to distinguish the fracturing due to the original shots from that due to the subsequent blasting. The enlargement of the holes due to the pulverizing action of the shots was. measured and an attempt was made to determine the effectiveness of 'sand tamping. Only five shots were made and few definite conclusions could be drawn. Some small-scale experiments to determine the effect of tamping were performed by Snelling and Hall,2 Small charges (20 grams) of dynamite were detonated at the bottom of a cylindrical hole in a lead block and the resulting enlargement of the hole was taken as a measure of the effectiveness of the explosion. It was found that when the shot was tamped with a sufficient amount of sand or clay, the volume enlargement was approximately double that found when no stemming had been used. The properties of the explosives have been the subject of much study by the manufacturers, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and various other agencies. For example, velocities of detonation for many commercial explosives are to be found in the Blasters' Handbook, issued by the Du Pont company. Many other properties are given in a treatise on the subject by Naoum.3 The shock wave that accompanies the detonation of high explosives has been studied photographically by Payman4 and others. The hydrodynamical theory of the shock wave has received much attention, and an extended theoretical treatment is given by Bateman.5 Two aspects of the well-shooting problem will be considered in this paper; namely, the fracturing of subsurface strata, and possible damage to casing. With respect to the former of these, several calculations have been made giving the stresses in the rocks surrounding the shot. THE south border of Espirito Santo begins about 400 km. north of Rio de Janeiro and extends along the Atlantic Coast northward some 325 km. and inland 100 to 150 km. The area under consideration, where quartz crystal of strategic grades has been mined, extends from 19° to 21° and 30" south latitude; and from 40° to 41° and 30" west longitude. This includes the central part of Espirito Santo, chiefly south of the Rio Doce from the Atlantic ocean, and west across the border into Minas Gerais near the town of Aimores, in the municipalities of Aimores, Minas Gerais; Baixo Guandu, Santa Teresa, Santa Leopoldina, Colatina, Joao Neiva, Fundao and Domingo Martines, Espirito Santo (Fig. 1). During 1943 and the first half of 1944, this region accounted for approximately 3 to 5 per cent of the quartz crystal produced in Brazil. Shipments of crystal have been made chiefly by rail to Rio de Janeiro. This region is serviced by the E. F. Minas-Vitoria and E. F. Leopoldina to Rio de Janeiro through Vitoria; and by the E. F. Minas-Vitoria and E. F. Central do Brasil through Bello Horizonte, Minas Gerais to Rio de Janeiro. The major deposits are accessible from the railheads by dirt roads, some being 5 to 30 km. off the road, reached by trail. In 1943 and the first half of 1944, the bulk of the production was from inter mountain marshes and adjoining hillside alluvial placer deposits in the zone surrounding the town of Santa Teresa. Most of these deposits were formed from the erosion of pegmatites, quartz veins and pockets in the gneiss, with minor quantities produced from miarolitic cavity fillings in the granitic rock. EARLY OPERATIONS Mining of quartz crystal in this region began in 1928, and has been stimulated by the market demand for military uses. Before 1936 little attention was given to it, either in Espirito Santo or eastern Minas Gerais. From 1936 to 1941 the Japanese sent agents to various points of production or potential production to acquire quartz through purchase. They bought crystal as small as 10 grams. Since 1941 only the United States and Great Britain have received quartz from Brazil. The United States purchases crystals of loo grams and larger for strategic purposes. The first known discoveries were made either in the municipalities of Aimores, Minas Gerais, or in Baixo Guandu, or Domingos Martines, Espirito Santo. Marketable quartz crystal was first found either in the massive quartz replacement veins of the Victor Hugo mine in the municipality of Domingo Martines, or in the large cores of quartz in the pegmatites near Baixo Guandu, extending into Minas Gerais. In 1943 and the first half of 1944, the bulk of the production was from inter- mountain marshes and adjoining hillside alluvial placer deposits in the zone surrounding the town of Santa Teresa. Most of these deposits were formed from the erosion of pegmatite~, quartz veins and pockets in the gneiss, with minor quantities produced from miarolitic cavity fillings in the granitic rock. Early Operations Mining of quartz crystal in this region began in 1928 and has been stimulated by the market demand for military uses. Before 1936 little attention was given to it, either in Espirito Santo or eastern Minas Gerais. From 1936 to 1941 the Japanese sent agents to various points of production or potential production to acquire quartz through purchase. They bought crysta1 as small as 10 grams. Since '94' only the United States and Great Britain have received quartz from Brazil. The United States purchases crystals of 100 grams and larger for strategic purposes. The first known discoveries were made either in the municipalities of Aimores, Minas Gerais, or in Baixo Guandu, 01 Domingos Martines, Espirito Santo. Several of the current concepts of brittle fracture involve consideration of, the existence of defects or flaws. Griffith 1 observed that the tensile strength of brittle materials was several orders of magnitude less than might be expected from the calculated strength of the molecular bonds. He was able to show that the stress concentration at the tip of an elliptical crack is sufficient to raise the local stress level many fold. He therefore proposed that real materials do contain such stress risers in the form of minute cracks and that this accounts for the rather large difference between theoretical and actual strengths of brittle materials. The degree of stress magnification depends to a great extent upon the orientation of the crack with respect to the general stress system, and to the general geometry of the crack. It is but a small step to extend the theory to include flaws and defects of other sorts which, though they may be less tractable mathematically than cracks, may still function as stress risers in a real sense in real materials. Brace 2 proposed that the application of the Griffith theory to rock material could be tested in two ways: "(a) by finding the orientation of cracks from which macroscopic fractures have developed and (b) comparing failure strengths from tests at different conditions of loading." In 1963 the author and coworkers at the Bureau of Mines, Twin Cities Mining Research Center, working on a problem involving relationships between strength, sonic velocity, and microstructure "eveloped an experimental technique to examine several somewhat similar questions; namely. does the frequency of occurrence of actual or potential stress risers dictate the relative strength of the material as proposed by Weibull;4 can actual flaws or defects in the rock structure be identified and related to strength and perhaps other properties in accordance with Griffith's theory; and is the anisotropic strength and elastic behavior of certain rocks related to the preferred orientation of these actual or potential stress risers? The experimental approach developed to answer these questions appears equally applicable to the testing of Griffith's theory as proposed by Brace. Basically the approach consists of a series of point-load tensile tests followed by petrofabric examination of thin sections prepared from the specimens in order to identify and apply a quantitative measure to microstructural defects which may have contributed to the failure process. In the point-load test, tensile stresses are induced by a compressive load applied to the center of a disc-shaped specimen by means of two opposing hemispherical indentors. Failure generally occurs as a single fracture parallel to the axis of loading and bisecting the disc. In recent years society has become increasingly concerned with maintaining and improving the quality of environment. Thus, public interest and concern with pollution problems is now high. This is reflected in recent federal and state efforts to formulate new legislation to prevent pollution and strengthen existing pollution laws. In reviewing literature pertaining to pollution problems, it is possible to distinguish many common elements. The most outstanding of these is the failure of the market to guarantee that private firms responding to price signals generated in the marketplace will make decisions leading to optimal resource use. Cases of market failure in allocating natural resources according to the wants of society frequently are due to the presence of technical externalities, or side-use effects.59 These roughly and generally can be defined as interdependencies among production and consumption units, the impacts of which are exerted other than through the market. They are, in other words, extra-market relationships. The economic unit generating external effects does not take them into account in decision-making. Thus, the tendency is for the unit to produce either more than society desires or not enough. In such cases society often has intervened in the decision-making process. This intervention frequently has taken the form of legislation to regulate production and consumption activities. Thus, a body of institutions, which acts as a constraint in decision-making processes, has materialized. These institutions are often far more influential in their effect upon resource use than are the forces of supply and demand acting in the marketplace. The problem of environmental pollution is essentially the problem of handling residuals which are the byproduct of all production and consumption activities which take place in the economy.2 These residuals are emitted into the air and water and disposed of on the land. They are interrelated, in that efforts to control emissions into the air or water can result in the production of solid wastes, which then present disposal problems. It is convenient to separate residuals by the type of pollution they cause-air, water, and land while remembering that these problems are related and that solutions may require coordinated effort.1 Residuals may be produced in both production processes and consumption. Residuals produced in production by the mineral industry, or firms utilizing its products, range from emission of sulfur dioxide by steam generating plants to radioactive mill tailings produced in the course of mining uranium.. Residuals associated with consumption are generated mainly through transportation of members of the household, space heating, and in the disposal of solid wastes, including refuse and junk autos. Residuals associated with both production and consumption receive attention in ensuing sections of this chapter.

The south border of Espirito Santo begins about 400 km. north of Rio de Janeiro and extends along the Atlantic Coast northward some 325 km. and inland 100 to 150 km. The area under consideration, where quartz crystal of strategic grades has been mined, extends from 19º to 21º and 30º south latitude; and from 40º to 41º and 30º west longitude. This includes the central part of Espirito santo, chiefly south of the Rio Doce from the Atlantic ocean, and west across the border into Minas Gerais near the town of Aimores, in the municipalities of Aimores, Minas Gerais; Baixo Guandu, Santa Teresa, Santa Leopoldina, Colatina, Joao Neiva, Fundao and Domingo Mar-tines, Espirito Santo (Fig. I). During 1943 and the first half of 1944, this region accounted for approximately 3 to 5 per cent of the quartz crystal produced in Brazil. Shipments of crystal have been made chiefly by rail to Rio de Janeiro. This region is serviced by the E. F. Minas-Vitoria and E. F. Leopoldina to Rio de Janeiro through vitoria; and by the E. F. Minas-Vitoria and E. F. Centra] do Brasil through Bello Horizonte, Minas Gerais to Rio de Janeiro. The substantial expansion of previously discovered gas pools was the principal feature of petroleum activity in West Virginia during 1940. At least one new gas pool was discovered and various other successful wildcat completions may prove to be gas-pool openers. Some slight extensions of oil pools were also made. The new productive territory, principally gas, added by these extensions was approximately 33,800 acres. ' In general, oil activity was slight because of unfavorable crude prices. Gas activity, on the contrary, increased considerably, although the price of gas did not materially change. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 709 new wells were drilled, resulting in 102 new oil wells with I055 bbl. of daily new produc-tion; 468 new gas wells with 633>g47,000 cu. it. of daily open flow; and 139 dry holes. Also, 91 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 143 bbl. and 44,833,000 cu. ft. of added production. On the new wells the oil average was 10.34 bbl, per well per day; and the gas average was 1,354,000 cu. ft. per well per day. On new wells the ratio of dry holes to completions was 19.61 per cent. On deeper drilling to other sands the ratio of failures was 12.I per cent. From an exploratory standpoint, one strictly new gas pool (Lorentz) was opened in Upshur County. Little forecast of its extent or reserve can now be made. The new extensions of various other previously discovered pools, however, give assurance of a new gas reserve that will equal approximately a year of gas demand. In addition to these definite supplies two widely separated Oriskany sand (L. Dev.) wildcats in Jackson County, one of which was completed late in 1940 and the other early in 194.1, may indicate two separate pools or may greatly extend known pools. In south-ern Kanawha County, also, an old Oris-kany-sand well deepened to the White Clinton sand (Sil.) showed a volume of 733,000 cu. ft. and rock pressure of 1800 Ib., giving rather clear assurance that this deep sand, in which only slight quantities of gas had previously been found, should eventually supply much new gas. On the other hand, various deep tests to the Oriskany sand in Harrison, Putnam, Randolph and Wood Counties were totally dry or gave only small volumes of gas, The principal oil wells completed, by counties, were: Calhoun, 15; Clay, Ir; Pleasants, 14; Ritchie, 15; and Roane, 7. Production for the year was estimated by the U. S. Bureau of Mines as 3,444,000 bbl., as compared to 3,684,000 bbl. in 1939. The leading counties in gas-well completions were: Boone, 36; Braxton, 17; Cabell, 25; Calhoun, 16; Clay, 22; Gilm.er, 47; Jackson, 38; Kanatvha, 77; Lincoln, 18; Putnam, 32; IGtchie, 40; and Wayne, 31, Production for the year is estimated by me as I70,000,000,000 cu. ft. as compared to I59,226,000,000 cu. ft.* in 1939. The expansion of the previously discovered gas pools and an intensified search for additional pools in the Oriskany and deeper sands were the principal petroleum activities in West Virginia during 1941. One small oil pool was discovered and another was considerably extended. One small gas pool was discovered, several isolated well discoveries were expanded into definite pools, and various recognized pools were substantially increased. The proved oil territory of the state was increased about 600 acres and the proved gas territory about 45,000 acres. The new discoveries of oil did not equal withdrawals but gas reserves added were greater than gas withdrawals. Oil activity, as in the past several years, was slight because of unfavorable crude prices. Most operators prefer to leave oil in the ground rather than to drill for it without a better return. Gas activity increased greatly because of better demand, even though the price of gas did not improve. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 838 new wells were drilled, resulting in 114 new oil wells with 2606 bbl. of daily new production; 558 new gas wells with 949,226,000 cu. ft. of daily open flow; and 166 dry holes. Also, 86 old wells were drilled to deeper sands with 9 bbl. and 56,030,000 cu. ft. of added production. On the new wells the oil average was 22.86 bbl. per well per day; and the gas average was 1,701,000 cu. ft. per well per day. On new wells the ratio of dry holes to completions was 13.61 per cent. On deeper drilling to other sands the ratio of failures was 15.12 per cent. From an exploratory standpoint one strictly new oil pool (Higginbotham Run) was opened in Kanawha County and one strictly new gas pool (Lost Run) in Taylor County. One entirely isolated wildcat gave commercial Oriskany-sand gas production and may open a pool. Various other wildcats greatly extended the boundaries of known Oriskany-sand gas pools and various others may have opened new pools in the shallow sands. On the other hand, various Oriskany tests in Harrison, Monongalia, Roane and Wood Counties were dry and all five tests to the White Clinton sand (Sil.) in Boone, Harrison, Kanawha and Wood Counties failed to find commercial production. The principal oil wells completed, by counties, were: Calhoun, 24; Clay, 7; Gilmer, 6; Hancock, 9; Kanawha, 9; Pleasants, 10; and Ritchie, 14. Production for the year was estimated by the Oil Weekly as 3,421,000 bbl., compared with U. S. Bureau of Mines final figures of 3,444,000 bbl. in 1940. The leading counties in gas-well completions were: Boone, 32; Braxton, 19; Cabell, 16; Calhoun, 46; Clay, 20; Gilmer, 37; Jackson, 94; Kanawha, 82; Lincoln, 17; Putnam, 46; Ritchie, 33; Upshur, 20; and Wayne, 33. Production for the year is estimated by the author as 210,000,000,000 cu. ft., as compared to the U. S. Bureau of Mines' final figures of 188,751,000,000 cu. ft.* in 1940.

The phase diagram Ta-Ni has been treated repeatedly; investigations up to 1958 are summed up in Ref. 1. Since then, an equilibrium diagram has been presented by Kornilov and Pylaeva.2 They found the following intermediate phases: Ta2N; (CuA12 type),3 "TaNi" (p phase, Mo8Co7 type), TaNiz, and TaNi3 (Ticus type).5 Of these, the crystal structure of TaNin remained unknown, and no further literature reference was found. According to Kornilov and pylaeva,&apos; TaNil melts peri-tectically at 1420°C. A 5-g alloy of Ta + 66.7 at. pct Ni was prepared by inert-gas arc melting using 99.95 pct Ta rod (NRC-MG) and 99.9 pct Ni shot (Fisher). The weight loss after three melts was <2 mg; a microscopically homogeneous ingot resulted. As shown in Ref. 6, no oxygen or impurity pickup needed to be considered under these conditions. Specimens were annealed for 15 hr at 1350°C, 15 hr at 1205oC, and 15 hr at 875°C with subsequent powdering and stress relief for 10 min at 1350°C, 15 min at 1205oC, and 1 hr at 875oC, respectively. Micrographs and X-ray analysis (114.6 mm Norelco camera, filtered CuK, radiation) showed homogeneous one-phase alloys in the as-cast state and at all three temperatures, all having the same powder pattern except for broad lines in the as-cast state. From this it is concluded that either TaNi, melts congruently or its melting behavior is a transition between the eutectic and peritectic cases. Since it was found that very slight surface contamination on stress relieving can considerably alter the structure of similar phases (e.g.,TaPt3),7 patterns before and after stress relief were also compared; they were identical except for line broadening in the non-stressrelieved condition, and two faint impurity lines in the stress-relieved samples. The powder pattern is presented in Table I. All lines were accounted for by indexing with a tetragonal lattice, 0Yh- I4/mmm , with a, = 3.154 ± 0.001A, co = 7.905 * 0.002i and c/a = 2.506. The atomic positions are: 1000; 1/2, 1/2, 1/2] + 2Ta(a): 000; + 4Ni(e): *(002); z = 0.333 * 0.002 This proves TaNi2 to be a representative of the MoSiz (Cllb) type. The variable parameter was determined by grouping the visually estimated intensi- ties according to their 2 indices, plotting their F values, and varying z for best fit, which was obtained at z = 0.333= 1/3. Since absorption was not considered, only the relative intensities with similar 28 can be expected to agree. The interatomic distances are presented in Table 11; the standard error is *o.o2A, resulting chiefly from the uncertainty in z. These distances indicate a coordination number 10 for both kinds of atoms and show that the pseudohexagonal layers along (110) are rather un-distorted. The mean atomic volume of 13.1A3 is close to the Vegard&apos;s law value of 13.3A3, showing

A sumMary of the consumption of coal in 1945 shows that the coke industry ac-counted for 17 pct of the total coal used. No substitute for coke and the blast furnace in the reduction of iron ore has gained sufficient prominence so far to be given serious consideration. However, while the same slot-type ovens are being built and used now as were in use a few years ago, the problem of obtaining suitable coking coals, both high- and low-volatile, has forced many operators to revamp coal-blending facilities. Until the beginning of World War 11, high-temperature ooke plants were able to secure the required high-volatile and low-volatile coals from two or three seams and from three or four mines. Thus, many of our coke oven plants were able to operate with storage bins for two coals only. The vari-pnce in raw materials was not great, and uniformity of blend was a relatively simple problem. Since the beginning of World War 11, many and important changes have taken place. Demand for all coals increased greatly. Production, though kept as near maximum capacity as possible, could not meet the demands for coal generally, and particularly for the various kinds of coal which have proved to be satisfactory for specialized uses; coals were allocated as nearly as possible in the order of greatest need; storage piling was reduced to the minimum necessary to keep plants in operation; uniformity of quality could not be maintained, and with this last, uniformity of composition of blends for coking could not be maintained. Whereas before the war producers of metallurgical coke could fill their needs from three or four mines, by the end of the war it was not unusual to find shipments to a single coke oven plant coming from as many as 30 different mines, in a single month. Since many of the mines producing both high- and low-volatile coal for high-grade metallurgical coke are rapidly nearing de-pletion, the problem of seeking new sources and of blending a number of coals in each plant for the production of high-temperature coke is facing practically every producer in the United States at the present time, and is one which will probably continue for many years to come. Midwestern byproduct coke ovens in the Chicago and St. Louis areas use annually from 12 to 15 million tons of bituminous coals which are transported 500 to 700 miles from the Appalachian coal fields of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and eastern Kentucky. Approximately two-thirds of this coal is high-volatile bituminous. The critical transportation problem confronting the nation in 1943, and the growing scarcity of the best Appalachian coking coals, prompted the Illinois Geological Survey to propose a research program in which would be studied the coking properties of blends of low-sulphur, high-volatile Illinois coal with the high- and low-volatile coals from the eastern fields. Application of the conventional depletion drive calculation methods to volatile oil reservoirs results in erroneous estimates of ultimate recovery. In view of the increasing number and importance of volatile oil reservoirs, a special technique has been developed which will result in more realistic predictions using laboratory data obtained from reservoir fluid studies of a specific type. The experimental data are designed to permit continuous material accounting and, therefrom, provide the hy-clrocarbon composition of both the flowing oil and gas phases. The resultant well-stream composition data are then used directly in surface recovery calculations utilizing equilibrium ratios. A step by step procedure, specifically designed for routine use by the practicing reservoir engineer, is presented in an appendix. An actual study performed on a deep Mid-Continent reservoir is used ay an il-lustrathe example. INTRODUCTION It has been a practice for many years to utilize the conventional ma- terial balance methods in conjunction with relative permeability concepts for the prediction of recovery from solution gas drive reservoirs.&apos; Those who have performed such calculations recognize that compromises of several types are necessary in order to reduce the calculations to a reasonable degree of complexity. The most serious assumption involved results from the necessity of treating the produced oil and gas as separate fluids, independent of each other in their behavior. It is further assumed that the gas which is evolved in the reservoir as a result of pressure decline will not yield liquid upon the reduction of pressure and temperature resulting from production through surface equipment. Although these shortcomings have been recognized,&apos; it has been difficult to attempt refinement of calculation procedures since the laboratory data available normally were not of the proper type or extent to permit such calculations. Three general procedures have been available for depletion drive calculations when laboratory fluid data are of the conventional type. Differential Procedure The most simple, and most widely used, method requires use of the formation volume factor and gas sol- ubility data obtained from a differential liberation performed at reservoir temperature. This procedure ignores the differences existing between the fluid behavior in the reservoir and its behavior as it is produced through surface separation equipment. The errors introduced are not serious when dealing with very low volatility fluids and this method may be utilized if the laboratory data indicate only slight differences between the differential data and the flash data obtained from separator tests. Modified Differential Procedure This method was developed when it became apparent that medium volatility fluids evidenced a wide difference between the flash and differential data. The differential data are adjusted by changing from a residual oil basis to a stock tank oil basis. All that is required is multiplication of the differential data by the ratio of residual oil to stock tank oil relative volumes existing for the original reservoir fluid at the determined saturation pressure. This procedure generally results in increased calculated ul-timate recovery; however, such results should be viewed critically. FOR many years the mining of coal and other minerals occurring in sedimentary formation has been planned according to information obtained by diamond drilling. Placer mines have used churn drills for sampling and estimating deposits, and some metal mines have used the method either wholly or in part. The diamond drill method, therefore, although not entirely new, has come into more prominence in the last few years. Several large-scale developments now being planned or in the production stage have used this method in varying degree. This paper will describe the operations of the Howe Sound Exploration Co., Ltd. at Snow Lake, Manitoba, where a gold mine was developed and equipped for mining and milling wholly on the basis of diamond drilling results. The property has been in operation nearly 3 years, so that results can be compared with the estimates and assumptions made from the diamond drilling. In developing the subject it is necessary to outline as briefly as possible the normal method of mining, from discovery to production stage. Table I sets forth these various stages, the methods of financing, the percentage of total cost, and the relative time interval required for each section of the work. The plan presented in this table cannot be applied to all mining developments, but it gives a basis on which to work. In Stages 2 and 3 the investment is moderate, and if the property does not respond favorably the options or interests can be terminated. Stage 4 represents a sizeable investment, and it is more difficult to drop the property after this part of the operation is completed. Stages 2, 3, and 4 may be repeated several times by different groups or companies before Stage 5 is reached, but when Stage 5 has been started the total capital investment must be provided and there can be no turning back. It will be noted that there is a total of 116 units of investment in the overall cost if one company proceeds with Stages 2, 3, 4, and 5 in order. Stage 4, however, consumes time which is important when markets are being considered. Bringing a property into production when metal prices are low is much more difficult than when the prices are high, and if this stage can be set aside production is attained more quickly. When Stage 4 is eliminated the total becomes 86 units of cost for Stages 2, 3, and 5, but an adjustment of 14 units must be added to Stage 5. These 14 units represent the useable value of Stage 4. Thus Stage 4 represents an investment of 30 units if carried on before Stage 5, but 14 units if included with Stage 5. This is accounted for by the fact that development work can be accomplished more cheaply under Stage 5, since everything that is done is planned on a production basis with permanent services. Stage 4 must of necessity be governed by expenditures, and a great many temporary services, including housing and power plants, must be provided. The prospect shaft is a small one, and drifts,
