Diphenyl guanidine is used as an accelerator in vulcanizing rubber. Other rubber accelerators are also flotation collectors, e.g., dithiocarbamate, thiazole, and the xanthates. Urea and its derivatives are good flotation collectors,1 and guanidine is the nitrogen analog of urea. These two characteristics suggested testing diphenyl guanidine as a flotation collector. Diphenyl guanidine has been tried in flotation work previously, but references give no details.2-4

The testimony given before the Patent Committee of .the House of Representatives in connection with the bills to establish the Patent Office as an independent bureau, to establish a United States Court of Patent Appeals, and to increase the force and salaries in the Patent Office, has been completed. These bills were originated by the Patent Committee of the National Research Council and have received almost universal approval. The Committee of the House of Representatives is favorable to what this Committee of the Research Council is trying to accomplish but the proverbial inertia of Congress toward the Patent system needs outside stimulus.

Australian research scientists at the University of Melbourne's Institute of Materials Research have discovered two methods of extracting metals from raw ore, using brown coal. The discoveries could lead to extensive new markets for the brown coal producers of Australia (boasting the world's largest brown coal deposits in the Latrobe Valley region of Victoria), the United States and West Germany. Research on the extraction processes began at the University's Department of Metallurgy in mid-1969 under the direction of Geoffrey Cullen, manager of the Materials Research Institute. In June of this year. Cullen announced that both metal extraction processes, using brown coal, had proven successful.

* Phosphate from the Maiden Rock deposits in the Missouri River Basin, Mont., are to be developed by the Victor Chemical Works of Chicago. A $5 million plant for processing the rock into elemental phosphorus is to be constructed in the vicinity of Butte. The plant will receive power from the Bonneville Power Administration. * Tests are being made to determine whether iron pellets from taconite concentrates will boost blast furnace and open hearth output at the Campbell Works of the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. About 35,000 tons of iron pellets have been shipped from Minnesota for this purpose.

A method to improve the quality of Magmont zinc concentrates to become acceptable feed to an electrolytic zinc refinery is described. The magnesia content of zinc concentrates produced was too high due to particle locking with sphalerite in coarse fractions. Regrinding the concentrates to a very fine particle size and then refloating the sphalerite was chosen to eliminate a sufficient amount of the magnesia to make the concentrates acceptable.

In an effort to improve coal-mine safety, a spectrum analyzer was used to make a detailed examination of the vibration frequencies produced by tapping a mine roof. We show that spectral analysis can be used to distinguish between "solid" and "drummy" roofs to a degree approaching that of the human ear, but it can reveal little about roof-slab thickness or attachment. We recommend research into the utility of augmenting human hearing in roof testing and into utilizing microseismic emissions to help assess roof integrity.

US 4,201,749-In the Bayer process production of alumina wherein aluminum hydroxide is precipitated from a sodium aluminate solution for use as seed, sodium oxalate and caustic components are removed from the precipitate by washing it first with a washing liquor which is saturated with sodium oxalate but has little content of caustic, and secondly with hot water. Excavation of cavities below the ground water level induces water influx from the surrounding aquifer. An estimate of the rates of flow prior to excavation operations may be of valuable information for the mining engineer. The present paper deals with water influx into cavities of the tunnel type, e.g., mine galleries, tunnels, etc. The solution of the flow problem was obtained by a numerical finite difference method. The results are presented in dimensionless form as a function of the parameters characterizing the location of the cavity in the aquifer.
