"This paper describes some energy reduction measures Implemented at the Griffith Mine. Before proceeding, I will give you a brief overview of the operation.The Griffith Mine is an iron ore mining, concentrating and Pelletizing complex located in the red lake area of northwestern Ontario. The operation is owned by Stelco Inc. And is managed By Pickands Mather & Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. Operation of the concentrator commenced in 1968 and it has been producing at a nominal capacity of 1,500 ,000 tons annually.The plant flow sheet is illustrated in this slide. Run of the mine ore is crushed in a single stage 54"" gyratory crusher. Reclaim ore feeders draw from an open stockpile to feed two 32' diameter by 12' long autogenous mills, each driven by 6800 hp. Two s·rages of wet magnetic separation, roughers and cleaners, and primary cyclones complete the primary circuit. Cleaner concentrate is then ground in four 14' diameter by 28' long pebble mills rated at 2000 hp. The secondary grinding circuit is closed by cyclones and fine screens. Secondary cyclone overflow is further upgraded through hydro-separators, finisher magnetic separators and flotation.The magnetic concentrate produced is then thickened, filtered, balled and fired in three vertical shaft furnaces to produce a high quality hematite pellet."

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The distribution of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits through time is episodic, involving relatively short time intervals of apparent high productivity and long intervals of low productivity. This distribution is principally related to the geodynamic evolution of the Earth. The vast majority of these deposits is associated with the assembly of supercontinents and form along convergent margins, generally in back-arc basins or rifted arcs. This contrasts with the distribution of black smoker deposits, which presently form along both convergent margins, particularly in the western Pacific, and divergent margins at mid-ocean ridges. However, the latter environment is rarely preserved deep into the geological past.There also appear to be systematic patterns in a number of other features of volcanic-hosted massive deposits through time. Deposits hosted by mafic-dominated successions are dominant in Archean to Proterozoic rocks, whereas deposits hosted by felsic-dominated successions are most common in Phanerozoic rocks. Geochemical characteristics of felsic rocks within the host successions and ore lead and sulfur isotope data of the ores have also changed with time. This suggests changes in the process of subduction and/or changes in the characteristics of the over-riding plate with time, consistent with isotopic and geologic evidence for greater reworking of pre-existing crust during the Phanerozoic.Other secular changes that are reflected in characteristics of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits include the redox state and salinity of coeval oceans. As an example, both the abundance of sulfate minerals and sulfur isotope patterns reflect the development of periods of anoxic conditions over time, with major intervals of anoxia reflected by a virtual lack or low abundance of sulfate minerals in volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits in the Mesoarchean to the Palaeoproterozoic, and shorter intervals since.CITATION:Huston, D L, Eglington, B, Pehrsson, S, Piercey, S and Doublier, M, 2015. This report is volume 3 of an eleven-volume final report for a Grant completed by The Pennsylvania State University for the Bureau of Mines to develop a dynamic general purpose computer simulation model for underground coal mining. The simulator developed under the Grant has a wide range of possible applications in the design and evaluation of underground coal mining systems from the standpoints of health and safety, productivity, and mine environment. The Master Design Simulator consists of nine free-standing function-oriented subsystem models linked together into an integrated, comprehensive model of an entire mining system. The subsystems comprising the Master Design Simulator include geology and reserves, methane generation, roof support, subsidence, production, rail haulage, cost, water generation,' and ventilation. This volume of the final report describes the Methane Generator subsystem of the Master Design Simulator. This subsystem is used to determine methane emission rates into the mine environment. These flow rates are then used by the simulator in planning primary and secondary ventilation systems, planning a methane drainage system, and analyzing complex ventilation networks. Both steady state and unsteady state gas flows are included, and have been modeled as second order nonlinear partial differential equations. Finite difference equations are used to obtain numerical solutions to the models using a central differencing scheme. An application of the model is presented. The appendices include derivation of the gas flow equations used in the model as well as a users manual for the computer program.

About 1973 the abrupt decrease in crude oil shipments due to political action by Middle Eastern suppliers, caused a shortage and a steep price rise. In response, Canada had to develop strategies of diminishing consumption and increasing production in both traditional and environmentally friendly resources. To clarify the situation in Canada, there are brief histories of energy (discovery, pipelines), manufacturing and science development, 1800-1970. Energy strategies, both nationally and in Quebec, succeeded in curbing consumption and in expanding production while fostering research in renewable sources. The industry-sector committees provided free exchange of conservation techniques through the federal energy ministry, with progress reports issued annually. Pipeline history in North America is reviewed along with manufacture and construction plans in Canada. Considerable success in all the aspects provided long lasting benefits, but after the embargo was lifted, many research initiatives were gradually abandoned for political reasons. Sustainability is the goal; society must conduct conserver analysis, legislation and action to enhance it.

A Transient Electromagnetic (TEM) geophysical survey was trialled in Bowen Basin Permian coal measures overprinted by Cretaceous intrusion. The trial’s intention was to compare whether TEM could assess residual coal more accurately and economically than drilling.TEM results were promising but had limitations. TEM did not compare to drilling for defining coal thickness or relative level definition. However, TEM resolved conductive anomalies laterally; providing a qualitative picture of remnant coal.Three material types and associated conductivities occur within the trial area: overburden (sandstone/siltstone), intrusive sills and heat affected coal.Ground conductivity was analysed by measuring decay of residual current within the TEM loop. Fast decay related to resistive overburden and intrusion, attenuated decay related to conductive coal.Generally speaking, carbon content governs coal resistivity where good quality, low ash, bright coal is more resistive relative to dull, high ash coal. Though in the trial area, relative to intrusion and overburden, coal was found to be the most conductive of the three materials.By modelling conductive anomalies, a general picture emerged of remnant coal regions. "INTRODUCTION Characteristics of the mineral products that are to be contrasted herein are net energy consumed in grinding to a definite top limiting size and size distribution of the ground products. Through contrasts of these grinding characteristics this paper to differences in related mineral products and in unlike products. For,example, in anticipation of the data to follow, although Joplin chert and Babeitt taconits are running mates in defying the best crushing machinery, taconite is one of the more docile and Joplin chert one of the most refractory mineral products ordinarily fed to a grinding Routine grinding tests on a great variety of ores and tabulation of the findings have been covered amply by Lennox 4/ and by Maxon 5/ and associates. In contrast to that work, the present paper is a record of random tests made over a long period, and each answered an urgent question at the moment. The work was done at the Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama. An hydraulic-powered reel system to minimize peak tension transients in shuttle car trailing cables has been theoretically designed and analyzed using a computer. A single spring-loaded take-up sheave stores or gives up cable to maintain tension within specified limits. Controls have been incorporated to shut down the vehicle before all cable is removed from the reel and to de-energize the cable in the event of a reel/cable jam. Full-scale hardware configuration drawings sufficient for manufacture of a test system have been completed.

METHODS of coal preparation have been greatly developed and improved during the past few years. Under the pressing competition from substitutes that have been displacing coal as a source of heat or power, the coal industry has been able, in many cases, not only to hold its own but to regain much of the lost ground, by offering better products of a higher value. The purpose of this paper is to present, in a brief and simple form, the principles of the latest methods and machinery used in coal preparation, in order to enable the coal operator t0 select methods and equipment capable of solving his own problems in the most efficient and economical way. The paper will deal, in the main, .with coal cleaning. It must be emphasized, however, that a complete coal preparation study covers many other operations, such as handling, screening, de-dusting, dust-proofing, and ash-conditioning. Handling Coal From the producing face to the railway car, coal must be handled with great care, t0 prevent degradation, because the coarser sizes are not only easier to clean than fines but, for our markets, they are often the more valuable. Generally speaking, such care is less important or is unnecessary in the Old Country, where conditions are different. The best way to minimize breakage is to avoid gravity methods in coal transportation. All chutes in a preparation plant should be shaken mechanically, and cleaning processes requiring large surge bins must be avoided. De-Dusting De-dusting of coal is accomplished by the use of vibrating screens, fans, or classifiers, or by a combination of these. Fines below 1/32-in. (or coarser than this, with some coals) can very seldom be cleaned efficiently. Common practice is to discard them immediately, if the moisture content of the coal allows this to be done. Otherwise, they are liable to give unnecessary trouble, either in the form of dust or sludge, which are difficult to collect or to settle. Flotation is the only process which will effectively clean fines.

This paper describes the conver¬gence and load measurements carried out in inclined seams at five longwall faces, two of which were supported by hydraulic props and the other three by conventional timber supports in Karadon-Gelik mine. The minimum support capacities determined in this study are compared with the results obtained from two empirical approaches suggested by Wilson (1975) and Jacobi (1981). The characteristics of hydraulic props to be used and support patterns in the longwalls are found, conclu¬sions are drawn and suggestions are made. Design nomograms are prepared for field engineers, in order to be able to approach the problem more confidently and realistically.

(Process Engineering) degree* The recovery of cobalt and copper from waste slag was studied in a plasma DC-arc furnace in reducing conditions. Three fluxes, CaO,CaF2, and TiO2, were investigated for their influence on selective recovery of cobalt into an iron-rich alloy. A further investigation on the influence of furnace power on the reduction of slag to recover cobalt to the alloy showed that a change in power setting had an unexpected effect on the recovery of metals to the alloy, in that selectivity of base metal recovery over iron recovery decreased at an increased power level. Preliminary economic mining feasibility studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to estimate mining costs in the Juneau gold belt area of the Juneau Mining District, southeastern Alaska. Investigations were conducted on the economics of two mineral deposit types: (1.) Berners Bay vein gold deposits, and (2.) stockwork gold deposits containing gold, silver, and lead. Cost estimates were developed using the Bureau of Mines Cost Estimating System (CES). Discounted cash flow return on investment (DeFROI) was calculated using the Bureau's MINSIM computer program. Underground mining of a Berners Bay vein gold deposit was found to be economic (15 pct DCFROI) at a recoverable metal value of $353.67/mt for a 100 mtpd shrinkage stoping mine with a 10 yr mine life, $324.76/mt for a 20 yr mine life, $138.63/mt for a 500 mtpd longhole stoping mine with a 10 yr mine 1 ffe, and $127.50/mt for a 20 yr mine life. Block caving mining of a large stockwork gold deposit was found to be economic at a recoverable metal value of $15.28/mt for a 18,000 mtpd mine with a 20 yr mine life.

This work presents: 1.) the results obtained from measurements of temperature profiles in pillars and at working faces of three coal mines located in Colorado and New Mexico, 2) a comparison of the experimental results with theoretical predictors based on linear heat flow models, and 3) temperature profile predictions based on a two dimensional coal mine model with an inclined crack located in the roof or wall of the opening. The thermal properties of the coal and shale samples taken from the mines were used as input data for the computer model. Good agreement was found between the measured profiles and the theoretical values obtained with the one dimensional model. The two dimensional model results show that a visible crack (0.01-0.07-ft thick) in a coal roof causes a surface temperature difference from 0.2 to 1°F at the edge of the crack for rock exposed to air from 1 hr to 288 hrs and with the air to rock temperature differences from 2°-6°F. A temperature difference of 0.3 °F was found between solid and broken rock in a shale roof with a 0.03-ft thick crack inclined 45° to the horizontal after a ventilating time of 48 hrs and the air to rock temperature difference of 2.1°F.

Investigation of the Classification Operation in a Coal Pulverising Vertical Spindle Mill Coal pulverisation in power plants is a major electrical energy consumer. In 2006 more than 41 per cent of world electricity generation was from coal where pulverisers use 0.5 to 1 per cent of gross generation. Therefore, pulverisers are an important target for optimisation not only for reducing costs of power generation but also for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. A better understanding of the operation of pulverisers is an essential requirement for their optimisation. However, little information is available, other than operating experience, on the performance of pulverisers and how these react to changes in operational variables. This study investigates the effect of changes in coal and airflow feed rates on the classification performance that occurs in an industrial scale ball-and-race vertical spindle mill in which the pulverisation and classification processes are linked together due to the separator classifier being an integral component within the pulveriser. In order to decouple the breakage and classification processes, samples were cut from upward flowing streams through sampling ports drilled on the pulveriser body at different locations. Specific sampling tools were developed. Samples collected from the pulveriser were size and density fractioned to distinguish the differences in behaviour of the components, namely coal and mineral matter. The coal flow rates on dry basis within the mill and around the separator classifier were calculated by mass balancing the multi-component data. The difference in classification behaviour of components during pneumatic transport was confirmed. The response of the circulating load in the mill (~600 to ~1100 per cent) as well as the dependency of fineness of the streams to the operating variables was demonstrated. The approach taken in this study has proved that development of a classification model for a vertical spindle mill pulverising non-homogeneous materials, eg coal, requires treating these materials as multi-component/composite substances.

The Stillwater Mining Company operates an integrated mines, mill, smelter and base metals refinery complex in Montana, USA for the production of a high-grade platinum group metals (PGM) bearing concentrate, nickel sulphate crystal and cathode copper from the PGM-containing nickel-copper converter matte. The complex was constructed in stages over several years, starting with the mine and the mill, followed by the smelter and finally, a base metals refinery, which was commissioned in 1996. Due to the relatively small quantity of matte production, a straightforward refinery process was initially selected to extract the base metals, which reported to a mixed nickel-copper solution for further treatment off-site, and yielded a high-grade PGM concentrate suitable for treatment in a PGM refinery elsewhere. Subsequently, as a result of increased matte production, the process was modified to separate the nickel and copper, and to produce a nickel sulphate salt and cathode copper. This paper describes the design and operation of the original and the modified processes utilized in the base metals refinery (BMR).

This project was initiated on October 1, 1980 and will be completed on December 31, 1983. The project was Initially approved and funded by the Office of Surface Mining and subsequently was moved to the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Mines. It was administered through the Indiana Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute. The research was done to assess reforestation success and ultimate productivity for areas reclaimed under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (P.L. 95-87). The Permanent Regulatory Program for implementation of P.L. 95-87 Includes provisions for revegetation that require seeding of ground cover plants to control erosion until permanent vegetation such as tree species Is established, and restoration of mined land to its original or better productivity. Much of the land to be surface-mined presently supports forest cover and it is anticipated that reconstructed minesoils will exhibit high productive potential for hardwood tree species. Hence, information was needed on compatibility of ground cover and tree seedlings when established concurrently as well as on revegetation success under postmining versus premining conditions.

This paper reviews the existing and state of art knowledge for electronic waste (e-waste) recycling. Electrical/electronic equipments (EEEs) which are unwanted, broken or discarded by their original users are known as e-waste. The main purpose of this study is to provide a review of e-waste problem, give e-waste management strategies and introduce various physical e-waste recycling processes with special attention towards extraction of both metallic values and nonmetallic substances. The hazards arise from the presence of heavy metals (e.g. Hg, Cd, Pb etc.), brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and other potentially harmful substances in e-waste. Due to the presence of these substances, e-waste is generally considered as hazardous waste and may pose significant human and environmental health risks if improperly managed. This review paper describes the potential hazards and economic opportunities of e-waste. First of all, an overview of e-waste/printed circuit board (PCB) components and substances are given. Current status and future perspectives of e-waste and waste PCB recycling techniques are described. E-waste characterization, dismantling, liberation, classification and separation processes, are also covered. Manual selective dismantling after desoldering and metal-nonmetal liberation at −150 μm with two step crushing are seen to be the best techniques. After size reduction, mainly physical separation processes employing gravity, electrostatic, magnetic separators etc., which are commonly used in mineral processing, have been critically reviewed here for separation of metals and nonmetals. The recovery of pure metals from e-waste after physical separation can be performed by pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical or biohydro metallurgical routes, which are not covered here. Suitable PCB recycling flowsheets for industrial applications are also given. E-waste recycling will be a very important sector in the near future from economic and environmental perspectives for both developing and developed countries. Recycling technology aims to take today’s waste and turn it into conflict-free, sustainable polymetallic secondary resources (i.e. Urban Mining) for tomorrow. Recycling technology must ensure that e-waste is processed in an environmentally friendly manner, with high metal/nonmetal recovery efficiency a lowered carbon footprint. Taking into consideration our depleting natural resources, this Urban Mining approach offers quite a few benefits; it provides a substantial secondary resource, while also ensuring that the environment is kept free from harmful toxins in e-waste. This results in increased energy efficiency and lowers demand for mining of new raw materials.

Kittusamy (Kittusamy & Buchholz, 2004) state that there have been few studies conducted to assess exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) in the construction industry. They suggest that there is very little reliable data from the construction industry that characterizes exposure levels to various hazards including WBV or the health outcomes from such exposure and that there is a need for more exposure data. In a recent exploratory study of heavy construction equipment Cann (Cann, Salmoni, Vi, & Eger, 2003) looked at vibration levels for 14 different types of construction equipment. Eight of the 14 pieces of equipment tested exposed operators to levels of WBV that exceeded the recommended limits for an 8-hour period when comparing the measured VDV to the ISO 2631-1 standards. The purpose of the present research was not only to test a larger number of scrapers but also to investigate scraper operator exposure to whole body vibration (WBV) separately for each task. Methods 33 scrapers were evaluated for WBV in a variety of residential and road construction projects. Testing equipment consisted of triaxial accelerometers that allowed vibration data collection in all three orthogonal axes, with the x-axis positioned to measure vibration in the anterior-posterior direction, the y-axis in the medial-lateral direction, and the z-axis in the vertical direction. Root mean square accelerations (aRMS), vibration dose value (VDV), crest factor, and maximum transient vibration values (MTVV) were derived from this software and exported to an Excel™ spreadsheet for later data analysis. Test sessions for each piece of equipment lasted for approximately 20 minutes until at least three work cycles had been completed. Tasks included: idling while waiting for a bulldozer to push the scraper through the scraping phase, scraping, traveling loaded with dirt, dumping and traveling empty. Results Task breakdown by time reveals 25% of the work cycle was spent traveling fully loaded with dirt, 19% dumping, 21% traveling unloaded, 17% idling and 18% scraping. Calculation of aRMS vector sums gave values of 2.55 m/s2 during loaded transport, 2.46 m/s2 during dumping, 2.31 m/s2 during unloaded travel, 0.55 m/s2 during idling and 1.46 m/s2 during scraping (see Table 1). The highest acceleration values recorded were found in the z-axis during fully loaded transport reaching an average aRMS over three work cycles of 2.55 m/s2.

Thermal treatment can significantly improve industrial comminution operations by reducing energy requirements and increasing mineral liberation. The assistance of thermal pretreatment prior to grinding by microwave heating is scrutinized in this study. For this purpose three copper ore samples with different chemical composition were used. To see the effect of microwave heating on ore; work index, breakage rate and breakage distribution functions of original and heat treated samples were examined. The results obtained in this study did not show significant improvement in the grindability characteristics of the studied ores with microwave heat treatment. The inadequate amount of microwave transparent matrix was the main reason for the absence of cracks and micro-fractures in the microwave heated copper samples.
