A method of calculating anti-slide pile, sheet pile, underground diaphragm and structure with anchors etc. is proposeed in the paper. The effect of the various layers of soil, anchors and bracings etc. on laterally loaded structures may be considered in the model. In the analysis the structure is divided into a series of elements. The transfer matrices of both deformation and internal force are established for each element. According to continuous condition neighbouring element should be connected. Thus the deformation and internal force of each element can be found out in conbination with boundary conditions. The method has a wider adaptability and it can be applicable to a great variety of the analysis of interaction between various structure and soil. If parameters in model are selected properly, the computed results would be in good agreement with the measured data.

"IntroductionThe data contained in this paper were collected during the course of an investigation which covered 15 representative coal mines in 6 coal-mining States. The purpose of the investigation was to determine by atmospheric sampling how much dust was raised into the air during the various operations of coal mining, such as undercutting with machines, loading coal by hand, and transporting it from the working face to the surface. The data thus obtained were considered from two angles - namely, the possible physiological effect of inhalation and the explosion hazard of the dust. No attempt will be mode to discuss the former factor in this paper.CONDITIONS OF MININGThe mines in which this investigation was conducted were considered representative, and it is believed that the results obtained will suffice for the average dustiness encountered in most coal mines. .All of the coal mined was bituminous, from beds 30 to 120 inches thick. Only the ordinary room-and-pillar system of mining was employed. Daily production ranged from approximately 700 to 1500 tons and the men employed from 150 to 450. Coal was undercut by short-wall mining machines in all mines, with the exception of one in which pick mining was employed. Loading at the face was done by miners; none of the mines used mechanical loaders. Electric drills, both for brushing roof and for shooting coal, were commonly used although some roof work was done with jack-hammers and a. little of both with augers. Coal was hauled by motor, mule, or rope power in end-gate cars with capacities ranging from 1600 to 3600 pounds. With few exceptions, coal was won at the face by dry methods - that is to say, no water was employed fox wetting down the dust either during undercutting, loading, or transportation."

Recent legislation and expected future legislation is aimed at reducing the dust levels developed in underground coal mines. Several techniques for reducing dust levels are being evaluated. One of these is the modification of cutting parameters such as feed rates, cutting speeds, and pick configurations in order to reduce the amount of dust generated. In order to evaluate the feasibility of modifying cutting parameters to reduce dust, the Bureau of Mines commissioned Battelle to construct a small scale mining machine which could be used for evaluating the effects of those changes in cutting parameters. Specific features of this machine were that it should be highly instrumented to measure various cutting parameters, should have a wide range of feed and speed controls, and it should be possible to vary the pick configurations and geometries on the machine. In addition, it was desired that this machine should have cutting capabilities which greatly exceed present coal mining practice and also that the unit should be small enough and portable enough that it could be taken into and out of operating coal mines with a minimum of interference with the normal coal mine operations. The first step in constructing a machine to meet these requirements was to determine the cutting forces and approximate sizes of components which would be required to cut at the speeds and feeds specified by the Bureau of Mines. Initial calculations using; published data on cutting forces indicated that cutting forces in the neighborhood of 5,000 lbs and power levels of approximately 30 horsepower would be adequate for the application. However, further data developed during the course of the project indicated that when low efficiency picks are used, cutting forces and powers can be two to three times as high as these initially estimated values. "Gold has been reported from most geological environments in Nova Scotia; however, virtually all production (circa 2,000, 000 troy ounces; circa 60 tonnes) has come from that part of the province to the south of the Glooscap Fault which is underlain by Lower Paleozoic rocks of the Meguma Group. Over fifty concordant sets of quartz-carbonate-arsenopyrite veins have seen production. The host rocks are greenschist-grade equivalents of Cambro-Ordovician flyschoid quartz wackes and shales folded and metamorphosed during the Devonian Acadian Orogeny. The veins were emplaced under conditions of greenschist-grade regional metamorphism and under the same conditions of tectonic stress that later resulted in the regional folds and penetrative, axial-plane slaty cleavage. Rapid filling of hydraulic fractures caused by excess metamorphic pore fluid pressure under Acadian tectonic stress conditions can account for the geometry and paragenesis of these veins.The ultimate source for gold deposits in most greenschist-grade domains remains in doubt, but these domains seem to have had ample gold within them available for mobilization. The work done, to date, on the gold geology of Nova Scotia suggests that regional greenschist metamorphism was an effective mobilizer and a potential concentrator of Au, As, W, Fe and S from these vast reservoirs.In rocks of pre-Acadian age north of the Glooscap Fault, gold occurs as an important accessory in volcanogenic massive sulphide ore, as a minor constituent in other types of basemetal concentrations and in one small concordant group of quartz veins.The post-Acadian metallogenetic domain, which overlies and overprints the two older domains, contains small amounts of gold in many mineralizing environments. Veins, with stibnite and gold, cross-cut crystalline rocks. Disseminated gold is present in basal conglomerates of post-tectonic molasse. Gold has been a by-product of Mississippi Valley-type Pb-Zn-Ba-Sr deposits in Lower Carboniferous sedimentary rocks and has been reported with Pb-Zn-Ba-F in veins which cross-cut Lower Carboniferous and older rocks. Small post-glacial placers have also seen minor production."

Commercial flotation plants operate on a continuous basis that is not simulated closely by the batch testing methods widely used in Bureau of Mines laboratory studies of flotation, Batch methods indicate whether a particular separation is possible but provide little or no information about the rates at which such separations can be effected in continuous operation, Therefore, laboratory equipment suitable for testing on a continuous basis was assembled for an investigation of a number of the operating variables that influence the flotation of coal. The results of these tests lead to the following conclusions: 1. Flotation recoveries were markedly influenced by variations in the percent solids in the feed, However, the relation between these variables is complex and depends on the particular coal and operating conditions used. Flotation rates generally increased with increased cell concentrations.

Analysis of the helium content of a natural gas presents more than the usual difficulties encountered in applying the thermal--conductivity method because of the relatively small amounts of this inert gas present and the wide variation in the other constituents. However, the numerous advantages of this method and its adaptability to continuously recording and control instruments make it worthy of consideration. A specific application of the method described yields quantitative results only when used with gas mixtures of known qualitative compositions which vary within predetermined limits. Periodic analyses for the helium content of a producing gas well may be conveniently made by an absorption method3/ and a continuous analytical method is not necessary for this purpose. Natural gas containing 1.75 to 1.90 percent of helium produced from Government-owned wells is processed in the Amarillo (Texas) Helium Plant of the Bureau of Mines. The helium extracted in the plant is supplied to the Army and Navy, and the processed natural gas is sold to a commercial gas company4/. As complete recovery of the helium in the raw material is not economically practicable, the processed gas contains 0.1 to 0.3 percent of helium, depending upon conditions of operation;- Production is checked against the helium removed from the gas, which before the installation of the thermal--conductivity apparatus was calculated from the analysis of a cumulative sample of the processed gas. As conditions of operation affect the residual helium content to a large extent, a composite sample was an uncertain index of the efficiency of the process.

Reduce the number of accidents in which large mining trucks crush objects that were not visible to the driver. Approach Improved rear view mirrors, light-bending plastic lenses, and a closed circuit TV, are combined in a rugged system that allows the driver to see almost all areas around a large raining truck. How It Works Improved mirrors, used in place of ordinary left and right rear view mirrors, give wider angle viewing. Fresnel lenses, two mounted on the front edge of the hood and another one mounted above the right front fender, show objects close to the front and right side of the truck. A rugged closed circuit TV camera mounted above the rear axle reveals objects behind the truck. See diagrams showing reduction of blind area around a 150-ton mining truck. The improved mirrors for rear viewing are approximately rectangular. The left rear view mirror has a flat reflecting surface 10 inches wide by 20 inches high. The right rear view mirror is curved to give wider viewing angles, both from left to right and up and down. This mirror is 12 inches wide by 16 inches high. Thermal method of diagnostic as a nondestructive monitoring is based on data logging of infrared radiation from heated surface or from the associated thermal field. Monitoring of gearcases and motors hidden faults, such as, bearing degradation (deep-seated wears and tears, fretting wear, spalling and jamming solids of revolution) is closely related to high variations in temperature. The use of portable thermal imaging devices provides considerable advantages due to: easy remote access to the unit under test even when it is operating; minimum time required to obtain information and an opportunity for a real-time diagnosis of the tested subject's condition.

Wound rotor motors are used in difficult mining applications where there is a need to start high inertia, hard starting loads while limiting inrush current They are recognized as robust and simple to control. This paper will cover the performance, specification, and important issues to be considered when applying medium voltage wound rotor motors in mining applications. Medium voltage grinding, crusher, and conveyor applications will be discussed. Specifically covered are motor efficiency, speed range, and rotor control. Crane motors often have wound rotor construction, but their load cycle and ratings are outside the scope of this paper.

The investigations described in this bulletin are confined to a study of the washing characteristics of bituminous coals. The major part of the work was conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Engineering Experiment Station of the University of Illinois and the State of Illinois Geological Survey Division between 1918 and 1924, in accordance with the provisions of an agreement between these agencies. The washing characteristics of coals from many of the important coal-producing fields of the Eastern and Central States were examined. The coals of the Pacific Northwest States and Alaska have been studied separately by McMillan and Bird of the Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Seattle in cooperation with the College of Mines of the University of Washington.2 OBJECT OF INVESTIGATION The object of the investigation of coal preparation by the Bureau of Mines has been to promote the production of better prepared coal and to facilitate the correct selection and design of coal-preparation plants by obtaining as complete information as possible regarding the washability of the various types of American coals and the treatment best suited to each. In addition, some attention has been given to the development of new methods of washing coal. The work naturally divides itself into three rather distinct steps: (1) Development of a systematic method of examining and testing a coal; (2) classification of the American coals on a basis of the occurrence of the impurities associated with the coal in the beds; (3) examination of one or more representative coals of each type.

Previous studies have shown that fracturing of roof strata precedes ultimate failure, and that the fracture development causes an accompanying increase in the apparent resistivity of the strata. Using this principal, a microprocessor controlled resistivity roof fall warning system (RRFWS) was developed that automatically sequences through and records up to 32 electrodes that may serve as either voltage or current electrodes. This capability permits increased coverage with a minimal number of required electrodes. The data is stored in a nonvolatile memory and on an optional printout, making the system nonsusceptible to loss of mine-power. To further save battery power, the system's electronics shut down between readings, except for a carbon molybdenum steel real-time clock. At a preprogramed interval, the RRFWS reactivates and repeats the sequence. If the absolute change or the rate of change of resistivity exceeds a predetermined limit the system is capable of sounding an alarm. In addition to the monitor, a stainless steel mod led split-set electrode was also developed that permits long-term corrosion-free contact.

The Peñasquito deposit in Mexico is one of the largest grassroots precious metal discoveries developed in recent years. Goldcorp Inc. acquired the gold-silver-lead-zinc property with the acquisition of Glamis in 2006. The Peñasquito property is located in the northeast corner of Zacatecas state, Mexico. The elevation of the property averages 1,900 m (6,200 ft) above sea level. It is situated in a wide east-west valley. Minera Peñasquito, S.A. de C.V., wholly owned subsidiary of Goldcorp Inc. has operated twin SABC-flotation lines since June 2010. Each line is capable of processing 50,000 tonne per day using a SABC grinding circuit followed by flotation to produce lead and zinc concentrates. The addition of a Polysius Polycom HPGR 2417 with dual 3,000 kW drives to reduce the crushed pebbles produced by the SAG mills was planned to increase production to 65,000 tonne per day per line. The production has been limited to 100,000 tpd due to operating issues in the grinding circuit. The operating issue has been the amount of pebbles generated by the SAG mills is significantly less than originally planned. This paper describes the planned installation of a crushed augmented feed to maximize utilization of the HPGR capacity. This coupled with full utilization of the SAG and Ball Mill available energies there is the potential to achieve a 50% total capacity increase from the grinding circuit.

The separating performance of a pilot dry beneficiation system using a gas-solid fluidized bed was investigated with coal from South Africa. The coal used for the study has a low inherent moisture content, a moderate ash content, a moderate volatile content, a low sulphur content and a high calorific value. Its washability is moderate. Experimental results show that the separating quality of the fluidized bed drops gradually as the feed-coal particle size decreases. The probable error, E, values for 50?25mm, 25?13 mm and 13?6 mm coals were 0.04 g/cm3, 0.06 g/cm3 and 0.09 g/cm3, respectively. The cause of the differences in separating characteristics was analysed by particle dynamics and numerical modelling. Furthermore, the pilot fluidized bed was employed to separate 50-6mm coal. In this experiment the coal ash content was reduced from 23.74% to 11.79%, with a probable error, E, value of 0.07 g/cm3and a recovery efficiency of 98.26%. This indicates that the fluidized bed is applicable to the separation of coal from South Africa and has good separating performance and wide applicability. Rock property data is needed over a wide range of parameters for the optimum execution of rapid excavation research. Eight rock types were chosen by the Bureau of Mines for a standard rock suite for such research. Large rock blocks were quarried and the standard physical and mechanical properties measured and documented. The eight rock types that comprise the rock suite are Barre Granite, Berea Sandstone, Dresser basalt, Holston Limestone, Salem Lime-stone, Sioux Quartzite, St. Cloud Gray Granodiorite, and Westerly Granite. Geologic, petrographic, physical-property, and mechanical-property test data are reported for each rock type. The information is the first step in the building of a comprehensive property listing for the eight rock types. A limited number of rock cubes are available from the Bureau of Mines Twin Cities Mining Research Center for use by researchers to broaden the information available on the suite.

This paper describing mining practices at the United Verde copper mine, Jerome, Ariz., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts f the United States. At present mining operations are being conducted both underground and by electric shovels in an open pit. The open-pit work has been described by E. M. J. Alenius in a previous publication of the Bureau of Minos;3 the present paper will be confined to a description of the underground mine. The underground methods comprise horizontal cut-and-fill, shrinkage with delayed filling, horizontal square-set, inclined square-set, and top slice. The normal daily production of the underground mine is 3,000 tons of copper ore per day, requiring the employment of 900 men underground.

The present versions of the Welding Codes, such as BS7608, have long been known to be compatible with hand computations of membrane and bending stress, rather than detailed finite element solutions. However, in the last five years, in the mining industry, this incompatibility has been largely ignored, and the code interpretations have been pushed into the realms of ground welds, residual stresses, and even flaw growth. Such techniques have to be recognized as extrapolations not necessarily sanctioned by the original code documents. The safety of such extrapolations, as they are related to grinding mill fatigue design, is investigated herein.

The small-scale surface mining operation in northern regions is typically located in a remote, ungaged basin. With the recent increase in the economic potential of mining, the number of small operations is increasing. The year-to-year variability in precipitation in this region under study is of great concern to mine operators. Some years may yield only 5 to 6 inches of precipitation, while others may yield in excess of 15 inches. Such variability makes placer mining operations difficult to plan, since low water years may result in too little run-off for gravel washing and high water years may result in flooding of mining developments. There are no official streamfloaw records in many watersheds in the northern region containing placer mining claims. However, information from other streams permits calculation of an estimated discharge for a watershed under consideration using average flows per square mile of drainage. It is to be emphasized that these are average or expected figures in reality, one water year may be significantly wetter or drier than another. This high variability of annual precipitation is significant in relation to placer operations because of the large quantities of water required for this type of mining. Some operations can not operate in low water years. In the larger watersheds, operations may continue in low water years but at a slower pace because of longer water collecting times. The high variability of available run-off rakes placer mining in many parts of Alaska difficult to plan on a long range because of the unpredictability of water supplies.

The use of walk-through inspections, approvals and ad hoc investigations to ensure risk is kept within acceptable levels is reaching its limits of effectiveness. Further improvement in occupational health and safety requires a systems approach, and the use of Quality Management principles is an obvious basis for this. SafeGuard, a æbest practiceÆ model health and safety management system and audit criteria based on AS/NZS ISO 9001:1994, has been produced by the Department of Mines and Energy. Quality style audits of mine and quarry health and safety systems are now being carried out by the Inspectorate.
