It is not uncommon to find large quantities of combustible materials in underground metal and non-metal mines. Support timber is the predominant combustible material. Spontaneous combustion, welding and cutting, shorted or overloaded electrical cables and careless smoking are common ignition sources. More recently, there is increased use of diesel mobile equipment that requires fuel storage and transfer areas. Diesel fuel spillage on hot engine manifolds and motors can result in rapid flame growth and heavy smoke accumulation in a matter of seconds. In-expensive, reliable fire detection and suppression systems are available to provide early warning of fire conditions and to isolate and extinguish fires that originate in fuel storage and transfer areas. This report presents an example of how technology developed and demonstrated under Bureau of Mines Contract H0242016, Mine Shaft Fire and Smoke Protection System, may be applied to protect underground diesel fuel storage and transfer areas. The Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) has developed a facility for the static testing of large scale ground support elements. The samples are loaded using a mechanical screw feed jack. Instruments measure the displacement and the load being applied. Methods have been developed for testing of mesh, shotcrete and membranes. Mesh samples are restrained on all sides and loaded centrally. A new large scale punch test method has been developed to evaluate shotcrete and membranes. These products are sprayed on to a sandstone substrate containing a centrally located isolated disc. The sprayed product is loaded by displacing the disk. The different test methods are described in detail. The test program involved two types of mesh, several shotcrete mix designs with different curing times and one membrane product. The force-displacement responses are used to directly compare the products. The implications for implementation of the different ground support products are discussed.

The Gippsland Basin, southeastern Australia, has an Upper Cainozoic history of episodic change of hydrology and the related environment, reflected in the geomorphology and surficial deposits of the onshore basin and the hydrodynamically controlled accumulations of petroleum of the offshore basin. Succeeding this episodic pattern, man through a number of activities, has had a sudden and major impact on the hydrology and the related environment. Activities include those directly affecting the groundwater system, such as extraction of fossil fuels with the consequent threat of land subsidence; irrigation and clearing of vegetation and the consequent effect of salinisation; change of land use and installation of septic tanks with resulting nitrate pollution; damming of streams and the consequent reduction in the frequency of floods with degradation of the biological Environment; de-snagging streams and construction of cutoffs with increased stream erosion, modifying wetlands including drainage, with the consequent degradation of their ecosystems; and increase in phosphate and nitrate inputs to the coastal lakes with the risk of their eutrophication.

Ground control hazards, coal quality, ore reserve estimation, and pollution modeling seem unrelated topics from most mining perspectives. However, geostatistical methods can be used to characterize each of these, and more topics. Exploratory drill core data, and continued drilling and field measurements, can provide a wealth of information related to each of the above areas and are often severely underutilized. Recent studies have led to the development of the Multiple Parameter Mapping (MPM) technology, which utilizes geostatistics and other numerical modeling methods, to generate a "hazard index" map, often from exploratory drill core data. This mapping has been presented for ground control hazards relating roof quality, floor quality, numerically modelled stresses due to mining geometry, and geologic features. A review of the MPM method, future directions with the MPM, and a discussion of using these and other geostatistical methods to quantify coal quality, ore reserve estimation, and pollutant modeling are presented in this paper.

At San Manuel, AZ, Magma Metals Co. operates an Outokumpu flash furnace, four Peirce-Smith converters and two anode casting wheels that are supported by six anode vessels. Process gasses from the flash furnace and converters are treated in a two-train/ double-contact sulfuric acid plant. The plant captures 98% of the sulfur. A new flash furnace was commissioned in July 1988. It has since processed more than 2.7 Mt (3 million st) of sulfide concentrate without a major rebuild. The company has gained unique experience in the operation of the flash furnace at high oxygen enrichments with low off-gas dust loadings. New procedures have been developed to maintain secondary material generation at equilibrium and for maintaining metallurgical control of operating parameters. Process flow description At Magma's San Manuel plant, concentrates and other copper-bearing material are blended and conveyed from two separate areas of the plant to three 420 t (465 st) capacity wet charge bins located above the rotary dryer. Flash furnace silica flux is conveyed to a 227-t (250-st) capacity fine flux bin located adjacent to the wet charge bins. The concentrate and flux are blended in controlled amounts and fed into a 168-t/ h (185-stph) gas-fired rotary dryer. The wet charge enters the dryer at 8% moisture and is dried to 0.2% moisture. The dried charge is pneumatically conveyed to a 580-t/h (640-stph) dry charge bin located above the flash furnace. Flash furnace charge is drawn from the bin by two drag conveyors at a concentrate feed rate of 145 t/h (160 stph). The charge is mixed with enriched combustion air and injected into the furnace reaction shaft. In the reaction shaft, the charge is oxidized to form matte, slag and a rich SO, off-gas.

In sampling dust laden air by drawing the medium into an inlet, some larger particles fail to follow the air and a true sample is not obtained. Inertia prevents particles from accelerating with the air as well as from turning sharp bends; also the particles' weight causes them to fall relative to the air. An analytic solution to the sampling efficiency calculation by Levin gives particle paths and sampling efficiencies for various particle sizes when the inlet can be treated as a point sink. However, the flow field in the neighborhood of an aspirating tube is quite different from a point sink flow. Employing Levin's solution in the outer field, trajectories in actual flow fields have been calculated by computer to locate the critical trajectories separating the entering particles I paths from those paths where the particles hit the tube wall or escape. Sampling efficiencies are presented in terms of 3 variables--a dimensionless particle size coefficient, a dimensionless orifice size coefficient and the tube orientation--for the no-wind case. Over most of the range of sampling conditions, the Stokes drag law can be used and dependence on the variable--particle Reynolds number--can be ignored. A procedure for achieving maximum efficiency in design of a sampler is proposed. Whether these results apply when typical room-sized eddies constitute the ?calm air? environment is not known.

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. Quantitative point analysis and microchemical mapping identified 52 different types of mineral in inclusions, usually ranging in size from 5 to less than 1 micrometre, inherited from source bedrock. A combination of grain chemistry, heterogeneity and inclusions provides a grain signature reflecting the type and history of source mineralisation. Several grains from an alluvial site are needed, to allow for bedrock variation and the presence of inclusions in only 10-20% of grains. A total of 1 530 grains obtained from 30 localities in Scotland were of ten types, two of them minor variants. Two types in the Highlands may be related to centres of Caledonian igneous activity, but the most widespread is likely to have been of deep-seated origin and structurally controlled. Gold in the Ochil Hills is probably from a source associated with Devonian andesitic activity. In the Southern Uplands, grain types reflect two separate episodes of mesothermal lode gold mineralisation and relationships with Permian red beds/mafic volcanics and with Tertiary dykes

Unique office software developed by AQUILA provides an encompassing Windows environment within which to manage and coordinate all aspects of data communications and information management between the drills and various mine departments. AQUILA and Caterpillar, along with Mincom and Trimble Navigation are partners in a technology alliance that is providing the surface mining industry with vehicle tracking and navigation systems for all mobile production equipment.

A volcanic sequence is described from the Golden Cross Mine, Waihi, New Zealand. The sequence includes seven lithostratigraphic units comprising flow and pyroclastic units of Coromandel Group andesite and dacite and overlying Whitianga Group dacite and rhyolite which is intruded by the Golden Cross dacite porphyry and rhyolite dykes. The sequence is mineralised and is unconformably overlain by two post-mineral units, the lacustrine Waitekauri beds and Omahine Subgroup andesite.   Detailed structural analysis of mine data has identified four deformational events (D 1-D4) and related these to the gold-silver mineralising events. Faulting was coeval with the mineralization and directly controlled the development, localisation, style and geometry of the ore shoots. Mineralization developed in competent lithologies where dilation occurred during faulting. The Empire Fault is the master shear which controlled fluid flow. Mineralised veining developed in response to tectonic pulses occurring at slightly different stages as represented by the underground Empire vein complex and the open pit vein array. The mineralising events culminated with the deposition of barren calcite veins. Post-mineral movement along the Western Boundary fault appears to have offset the orebody.

A simulation model was used to study the performance of various types of screen cloth on industrial vibrating screens. The model takes into account the effect of loading upon screen performance and predicts both themass flow rate and size distribution of the screen products.It was found that the use of the simulation model allowed the reconstruction of data for identical conditions and hence has simplified the analysis of the comparative performance of the screens. The dependence of performance upon operating conditions was found to vary markedly with screen cloth type.

Successful hydraulic pressure treatment of oil and gas wells that have long producing intervals, multiple pay zones, fluid thief zones, or natural or induced fractures has long been a serious problem plaguing the petroleum industry. High fluid-injection rates, straddle packers, ball sealers, and either liquid or solid additives to the treating fluids are being used to cope with this difficult and costly problem.l-6 The use of ball sealers and straddle packers is limited, in practice, to wells that have been completed with perforated cemented casings or liners. Well stimulation with ball sealers and straddle packers is usually successful as long as the cement remains competent. The other techniques of diverting are used with all types of completions. However, there are two significant disadvantages of the high rate method: excessive horsepower requirements, and the need of large treating-fluid volume. Consequently, most well stimulation techniques that involve diverting depend upon ball sealers or granular materials. Liquid diverting agents, and some of the solid ones in use today, frequently will cause formation damage. On the other hand, the most popular particulate diverting agents often are so soluble in the treating fluid that they become largely ineffective; their particle size is severely reduced as they dissolve while being transported through thousands of feet of pipe to the formation face down hole. In our attempts to deal with the shortcomings of these diverting agents, we experimented with a large variety of potentially suitable deformable materials the solubility of which could be controlled. Following are the criteria for the diverting agent sought: 1. The material must be effective in reducing fluid loss to thief zones, including existing fractures and very high permeability layers in the formation to be pressure treated. 2. The material must have enough strength to bridge under the treating pressure. 3. The material must be insoluble or slowly soluble in the treating fluids so that the particles retain sufficient size to be effective after they reach the formation face. 4. The material must be completely soluble in the produced oil or condensate liquid so that it can be removed readily; it must not cause formation damage. A number of products consisting of various polymers blended with waxes and other solid hydrocarbons were examined. All these materials satisfied the criteria for a diverting agent and also exhibited some degree of plastic deformability. On the basis of initial tests of strength and hardness, several blends of wax and polymer were selected for extensive testing in the laboratory and the field. These compounds have congealing temperatures ranging from 140 to 190F; they are insoluble in water and soluble in oil. They conformed, therefore, to the criteria specified for a theoretically superior diverting agent. Laboratory and field tests were conducted using these wax-polymer materials to demonstrate that the use of a deformable diverting agent can significantly improve fluid diverting performance. This paper presents a resume of the likely profitable mining areas in New Zealand. It covers the main 'minerals' û gold, coal, oil and gas, ironsands, silica sands, clays, lump silica, perlite, sulphur and limestone. The potential mining projects are depicted on a map of New Zealand together with the associated works involved in hydro-electric and geothermal power development requirement for industries such as aluminium, nickel ferro-silicon or silicon carbide production. The political need for mining development to relieve unemployment and reverse emigration is stressed. A case is made for exploration and development assistance by government in labour re-training, energy supply and transportation, if the tremendous losses through lack of use of human and industrial resources are to be rapidly reduced. These losses are currently estimated at $10 000 000 000 per year. The need for protection of the sanctity of contract and security of tenure of all mining operations is touched on briefly as is the need for a reasonably balanced view on conservation. However, as both of these are more properly covered in papers on the legal and environmental aspects of the mining climate, they are presented here only as they affect the economy of the mining operation. Finally, there is a brief comment on the mining climate in New Zealand relative to Australia and South Pacific mining operations.

Main ore pass systems should last the life of a mine, and too often expensive and hazardous remedial measures are required to repair a damaged ore pass in an attempt to extend its life. In order to maximize the life expectancy of all ore passes at Moab Khotsong, ?wearing blocks? and ?softer support? systems, combined with basic rock engineering principles, have been implemented. Failure of an ore pass can have severe financial implications, both indirectly because the ore pass cannot deliver the broken rock either from level to level or directly in the shaft ore pass system to the required level for tramming to take place, and directly due to the cost of the repair work that is required. Several factors need to betaken into consideration so that production interruptions are eliminated or minimized. Investigations of damaged ore passes at Moab Khotsong and surrounding mines revealed some interesting mechanisms of damage, and some innovative methods of reducing or eliminating the damage have been implemented at Moab Khotsong. The system design was based on 30 years, experience in main shaft rock passes. The design was to counteract scaling, hang-ups and dust problems associated with main rock passes, and the objective was to increase the life of rockpasses. These problems, including the initial design aspects to try and eliminate the repair measures, are discussed in detail.

Despite the recovery of approximately six million ounces of alluvial gold from the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand during the last 140 years, a great deal of this having been obtained via sluice boxes and riffle tables, there has been little advance in riffle table technology during this period. In this paper contemporary riffle table design and current operational practices are examined. Studies of gold loss to undersize tailings are described. In addition recommendations derived from recent research carried out in North America are contrasted with gold saving strategies adopted by West Coast miners.

Despite observations of spalling and damage of mine excavation wall rock in the Bushveld Complex (BC) over the passage of time, there have been very few time-dependent or creep tests carried out in South Africa on rock, particularly on BC rock types. The research described in this paper deals with the investigation of stress and strain conditions influencing spalling of wall rock in BC mine excavations, and the influence of time on the tensile strength of several BC rock types. Time-dependent laboratory testing of BC rocks was carried out in indirect tension. The results show that the magnitude of the tensile strength of BC rock types is approximately 5% of their uniaxial compressive strength magnitudes. The average long-term uniaxial compressive strength of the BC rocks, interpreted from the axial stress-volumetric strain graphs, is 56% of the UCS value. The long-term tensile strength is shown to be less than 70% of the normal tensile strength. Extension strains at tensile strength failure ranged between 0.16 and 0.21 millistrain. Values corresponding with the long-term tensile strength are less than 70% of this range, namely, 0.11 to 0.15 millistrain. These results represent new knowledge, since such rock testing and analysis does not appear to have been carried out previously on BC rock types. Elastic numerical modelling was carried out to illustrate the extents of tensile stress zones and extension zones around of typical BC mine excavations. The models showed that large zones of extension strain can occur around BC excavations, and that the magnitudes of the extension strain can substantially exceed the critical values determined from the laboratory testing. The implication of this is that there are substantial zones surrounding BC mine excavations that will be prone to time-dependent spalling conditions and perhaps more significant failure.

Waelz process is a method applied in the zinc oxide production and is one of the largest sources of carbon emissions within the zinc industry. The solid carbon used for heating and for reduction reactions is provided mainly by the coke fed with the EAFD in the Waelz kiln. Both chemical composition and physical properties of the coke are important to transportation and to the process. Decarbonizing the Waelz process by replacing the traditional fuel source using alternative biogenic fuel, for example, offers a potential solution to reduce the carbon footprint, which is aligned with the ESG perspective.

A pond rehabilitation and environmental education project were proposed by Cleveland-Cliffs Michigan Operations (CCMO) and approved by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) as partial fulfillment of conditions for a stream mitigation permit. The goals of the project were the rehabilitation of a pond on a tributary of a local trout stream, enhancement of public access and appreciation, and the initiation of a site-based environmental educational curriculum. Cleveland-Cliffs undertook a suite of actions to rehabilitate a pond created by a previous mining operation in 1912 and make accessible to local schools the aquatic and riparian ecosystems. Cleveland-Cliffs partnered with the local governmental unit and two local school districts. The rehabilitated pond and riparian zone provide an accessible natural area that local residents can use for such activities as hiking, biking, walking, fishing and nature study. Vegetative enhancement includes the planting of native shrubs, wildflowers and showy herbaceous plants in the pond, on the riparian fringe and the surrounding area. An interpretive trail was developed around the pond with signs created by a local master watercolor artist. Local schools built and installed picnic tables, benches and a kiosk. Cleveland-Cliffs created pond lesson plans tied to the Michigan Curriculum Framework, developed inexpensive teaching kits and hosted a workshop for teachers from nine local schools. Classes regularly utilize the pond during the school year conducting environmental studies. Nesting boxes, wildflower gardens, bat houses, frog deformity surveys and water quality studies are a few of the activities that classes have conducted at the pond.

"The Beal Mountain mine near Anaconda, Montana, is an interesting case history of a mine that has continued operations despite several large pit wall failures over a period of approximately 10 years. The largest event involved some 3.9 million tons of rock that has moved steadily at a rate of about 0.05 ft/day since 1992. This paper documents the geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring programs implemented at Beal to provide the company with a comfortable baseline that supported ongoing operations. The success and failure of a variety of stabilization measures will be discussed, along with typical instrumentation responses for several significant events. The success of Beal Mountain serves as a good model for mines faced with serious geotechnical challenges."

Unplanned stope panel collapses occur on most near-surface and shallow mines in South Africa. Although these incidents often occur during blasting, they pose a major threat to the safety of underground workers and the economic extraction of orebodies. Most stope panel collapses occur due to excessive panel lengths (resulting in excessive stope spans) that are not designed according to a systematic design procedure or methodology. Instead, panel lengths are often dictated by the equipment in use and by previous experience under similar conditions. Hence, a rock engineering design methodology for the design of stable stope panels between pillars is of vital importance for optimum safety and production in shallow mining operations. Using the proposed design methodology described in this paper, rock mechanics practitioners and mine planners should be able to identify and quantify the critical factors influencing the stability of stope panels. The critical factors should then be used as input to the design of stable stope panels that will provide the necessary safe environment for underground personnel working in stopes. The proposed design methodology is an iterative process, which includes aspects such as rock mass characterization, estimation of rock mass properties, identification of potential failure modes, consideration of appropriate stability analyses and other elements of the rock engineering design process. This process continues after implementation. During monitoring, new data should be included in the database and the design process repeated on a regular basis. Design approaches included in the proposed design methodology include empirical methods such as different rock mass classification methods, analytical methods such as elastic and Voussoir beam analyses, kinematic analyses, probabilistic analyses, and numerical analyses. "INTRODUCTION The Edison mine comprises workings on two irregular spodumene-bearing pegmatite dikes which outcrop near the town of Keystone in the southern portion of the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation of the Edison mine as part of a comprehensive study of the lithium mineral-production possibilities in the Black Hills area. The work was undertaken during the Second World War, when the demand for certain lithium salts and compounds exceeded the then small productive capacity of the industry.During the course of the project, the Bureau of Mines completed 13 diamond core-drill holes, aggregating 2,114.5 feet of drilling. Twenty-six cannel samples were taken from the main Edison shaft, and 13 miscellaneous samples were obtained to permit analysis of the efficiency of phases of mining and sorting operations. Metallurgical tests were made by the Bureau of Mines to investigate the feasibility of beneficiating spodumere-bearing ores from the Edison mine. 3/"
