This Bureau of Mines report reviews the mineral industry of the Black Hills area, including Butte, Custer, Fall River, Lawrence, Meade, and Penning- ton Counties, S. Dak.; and Crook, Niobrara, and Weston Counties, Wyo. It includes discussion of geological occurrence, processing, and potential of 27 commodities that have been produced from the nine-county area. The value of mineral production exceeds $70 million annually. Gold and petroleum account for two-thirds of the total, followed by clays, cement, sand and gravel, and rock. The combined mineral industries annually consume 268 million kilowatts of electrical energy, 933 million Mcf of gas, and 2 million barrels of fuel oil. Water consumption is about 10,000 gallons per minute. About 2,700 persons are employed on a year-round or significant part-time basis.

IN ONTARIO development of the gold mines is being rapidly pushed, while the intensity of the search for new mines has probably not been equaled at any time in the past. Even to outline the results of recent prospecting activity in Ontario would be a big undertaking, but it would be timely and, I hope, interesting to Institute members to review some generalities regarding the work of the prospector and then to discuss in some detail the growth of Ontario's most promising prospect area, the Swayze district, where serious mining operations are already under way. Probably no one writing about prospectors and pros¬pecting can resist hoping that his article will not reach the eyes of a certain portion of the uninformed general public and cause a further influx of "prospective prospectors" into any given area. Professor R.P. King holds a Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering, which he obtained at the University of Manchester in 1963. After that he lectured in the Departments of Chemical Engineering at the Universities of the Witwatersrand and Natal. From 1968 to 1973, he was Leader of the Chemical Engineering Research Group of the National Institute for Metallurgy at the latter University. Mr C.E. Fivaz, Pr. Eng., is Chief Consulting Metallurgist of Rand Mines (Mining & Services) Limited, and is responsible for the metallurgical activities of the Gold and Uranium Division and the Coal and Base Minerals Division of the Group.

Some twenty to twenty-five years ago we saw the beginning of mechanization in our coal mines, It has now progressed to the point Chat as instruments of production the pick and shovel are things of the past, They had to give way to better and more efficient methods--so mechanization, followed by and combined with automation, has become common-place in our mines. Our coal could not keep its competitive position without this progress Without it our industry could not look to the future with any degress of confidence. Today we lock back and see cases of regained and salvaged markets. We see better coal products being produced at decreasing costs. We see better utilization of manpower and a stronger, more confident industry, Our hats arc off to those mining men, equipment manufacturers, labor leaders, and others who had the foresight to work toward these ends and the ability to bring them about.

"Syngas from Africary’s Theunissen underground coal gasification (UCG) project will be used for power production and synthesis of liquid fuels and commodity chemicals. However, some of the coal components, especially condensable water, oils, tars, inorganic trace elements, and a small fraction of fly ash and particulate matter, make their way to the surface via the production well and can cause adverse impacts on downstream processes. Africary’s standard design incorporates a cold gas clean-up system that relies on relatively mature techniques based on highly effective wet scrubbers and acid gas removal (AGR) systems such as Rectisol®, but with the downside of low energy efficiency and waste water generation. In this paper, novel technologies for removing contaminants and species separation from the hot (T > 300°C) raw syngas are compared. Comparisons are made between supersonic gas separation (SGS), Ranque–Hilsch vortex tube (RHVT), vortex gradient separation (VGS), and inertia vacuum filtering (IVF), and a vortex-based gas separation concept is proposed for UCG applications. IntroductionImpurities in gasification feedstock (coal, biomass, waste, etc.), especially sulphur, nitrogen, chlorine, and inorganic mineral matter, often end up in the syngas and can cause adverse impacts on downstream processes. Africary’s standard design incorporates a cold gas clean-up system that relies on relatively mature techniques based on highly effective wet scrubbers and acid gas removal (AGR) systems such as RectisolR, SelexolR or aMDEAR; but with the downside of low energy efficiency and waste water generation.Hot (T > 300°C) gas clean-up technologies are attractive because they avoid cooling and reheating of the syngas stream. Some available warm gas cleaning technologies include traditional particulate removal devices such as cyclones, candle filters, membranes, and molecular sieves. The warm gas desulphurization process technology developed by RTI LLC (2018) requires hot syngas to remove sulphur and has become commercially ready. Many other hot gas cleanup systems are still under development, given the technical difficulties caused by extreme environmental and operating conditions."

Behavioral accidents are a particular type of accident. They are caused by inappropriate individual behaviors and faulty reactions. Catastrophe theory is a means for mathematically modeling the dynamic processes that underlie behavioral accidents. Based on a comprehensive data base of mining accidents, a computerized catastrophe model has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. This model systematically links individual psychological, group behavioral, and mine environmental variables with other accident causing factors. It answers several longstanding questions about why some normally safe behaving persons may spontaneously engage in unsafe acts that have high risks of serious injury. Field tests with the model indicate that it has three important uses: It can be used as an effective training aid for increasing employee safety consciousness; it can be used as a management laboratory for testing decision alternatives and policies; and it can be used to help design the most effective work teams.

Ventilation is the most important safety factor in the production of coal because on it depends the safety, health, and efficiency of those who work underground. Without adequate and efficient means of supplying fresh air to the working faces, mining could not have advanced as it has. The extent of the workings, the increase in mechanization, and the increasing use of electricity are largely responsible for changes in methods of ventialtion. Ventilation in the early, days of coal mining was accomplished by means of a natural draft, created principally by a difference in the weights of columns of air between the intake and return openings: Later the furnace was introduced for the purpose of increasing the quantity of air in circulation. Mines continued to become larger, their output increased, men were employed in greater numbers, and more fresh coal surfaces were exposed. Coal beds near the surface, and practically free from explosive gas became exhausted, and deeper beds that liberated methane were opened as development advanced. Mechanical ventilation became necessary and was first accomplished by disc-type steam driven fans she old-.fashioned steam driven disc fan has generally been supplanted by the powerful electrically operated centrifugal fans in use at modern coal mines. In order to be secure against gas explosions and provide ample fresh air for persons employed in large coal mines, air must be conducted through the mine to all working places and to all other unsealed parts of the mince in sufficient quantities to dilute and render harmless all dangerous and noxious gases.

This is the fourth in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior. The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-363/. The second report gave the same data? for motor gasolines sold during the summer of 19364/. The third report of the series gave the same data for motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1936-375/. This report covers 63 brands of gasoline represented by 1,136 samples excluding the Pacific Coast. Those from the Pacific Coast were averaged by the Pacific Coast technical group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were submitted. In some areas reports were received from five or six companies on the same brands of gasoline, whereas in other areas only one company reported on a brand. Thus, it can be seen that some of the data are more representative than others.

The methane emission rate into an underground mine environment from overburden strata during longwall mining is impacted by reservoir and geomechanical characteristics of the coal measure rocks in the overlying strata, as well as the presence of any coal seam. The reservoir characteristics and how they change during mining potentially affect the performance of gob gas ventholes, which consequently impacts the efficiency of methane control in the mining environment. This study presents reservoir and elastic properties of coal measure rocks in the Lower Monongahela Group in Greene County, southwestern Pennsylvania, of the Northern Appalachian Basin. Since the source of methane in this region from underground mining is located between the Sewickley coal and the Pittsburgh coal, a specific emphasis was given to this interval. Core analyses were performed in the laboratory to determine rock porosity and permeability. Geophysical logging data (gamma, density, sonic) obtained from two exploration boreholes were used for evaluating formation boundaries, shale contents, log porosities, and geomechanical properties of formations. Permeability was also calculated using density-log data and empirical equations and compared with laboratory measurements and slug tests performed in isolated intervals of boreholes. The results presented in this study can be used as data sources for reservoir studies related to the production and control of methane.

Almost all the ore deposits of ferrous, non-ferrous and rare metals of Kazakstan, are exploiting by the open-cast method, are the complex-structural, multi-component ones. Their rational working requires precise organization of extracting works. In this connection it is necessary to set up the best intercommunications between drilling-blasting, excavating-loading and transport works. This requires the stable functioning of the quarry for dispatch of ore raw material of required quality with minimum of corresponding expenses. For this purpose, proceeding from the quarry’s ore output and the assumed parameters of the exploitation system, the first problem about rational arrangement of excavating-loading equipment in extracting faces is solved. By solving the problem the model with dynamic, adapting properties had been used. It was solved numerically by the method of statistical tests. By setting up the necessary link between type-sizes of excavating-loading and transport equipment, the minimum prime cost of loading and transportation of 1 ton of mining mass from the face to the receiving station was adopted as the criterion of optimality. Depending on the type of excavating-loading equipment, the efficiency function may be different. By using wheel loaders, their displacement between the faces is possible, therefore, the efficiency function of the problem may include expenses for their displacement. By using excavators like power shovel, the problem’s restrictions must exclude its displacement between the faces. The efficiency function consists of minimum expenses for loading, proceeding from set of volumes of extraction from the faces, satisfying required quality. The volumes of extraction from the faces, satisfying required quality of ore in output stream, are determined by the method of statistical tests. Sample range is given, proceeding from the restrictions for maximum productivity of the excavating-loading equipment. Volumes of extraction, not satisfying required quality, are cut off. The efficiency function meaning is then determined and minimized. Mention of any company or product does not constitute endorsement by NIOSH. ABSTRACT Proximity detection systems (PDSs) for mobile machines have the potential to decrease injuries and fatalities. Early adopters of the technology have identified some challenges, which presents an opportunity to explore and improve the integration of mobile PDSs in underground coal mines. The current study applied the task-technology fit framework to investigate the fit between mobile PDS technology and mining relative to health and safety, from the perspective of leaders at two coal mines. Quantitative results from the study show that mine leaders evaluated mobile PDS favorably for training and ease of use, system feedback, user authorization and experience, and less favorably for safety, compatibility, task completion, and reliability. Qualitative results reveal specific task, mine, and system characteristics that may have influenced leaders' evaluations. The study includes considerations for safe technology integration. INTRODUCTION Striking, pinning, and crushing accidents related to mobile machines continue to be a major concern in underground coal mining. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) linked 22 of the 75 underground mine fatalities reported between 2011 and 2015 to power haulage [1]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) asserts that proximity detection systems for mobile machines (mobile PDSs) could help to prevent these types of fatal injuries [2]. Mobile PDSs use a collision avoidance technology that allows the mine to establish hazard zones and employ electromagnetic sensors to detect workers equipped with a miner-wearable component (MWC) working near these mining machines. The authors characterize a mobile PDS as an automated technology, because—in line with Lee & See’s [3] definition of automation—a mobile PDS actively “selects data, transforms information, makes decisions, or controls processes” (p. 50). When the system detects workers in the established hazard zones, it issues alerts and slows or stops the mobile machine. Even though a mobile PDS may be a viable and promising safety solution, there are still a number of questions regarding how well this automated technology will fit with mining tasks and conditions. Using a mixed-methods approach, the current study explored factors that influence the fit of mobile PDSs in the underground mining environment.

In late 1946, research was begun at the Bureau of Mines Electrometallurgical Laboratory at Boulder City, Nev., to determine the possibility of electrowinning manganese from chloride electrolytes on a continuous basis. All phases of electrodeposition were investigated on a small scale it the laboratory, and the results were reported by Jacobs and Churchward. These results indicated that a chloride process had certain possible advantages over the sulfate process that made it worthwhile to continue the investigation on a semi-pilot-plant basis, and this paper reports the results of this work. Research and development work on a process for electrowinning manganese from low-grade ores has been carried on intermittently by the Bureau of Mines since 1936. A process was developed, using sulfate electrolyte, that has been extensively described in the literature.

More than 95 percent of all the barite mined and produced is used in the petroleum industry as “drillers mud.” The remaining barite is used in the industrial and medical markets. Therefore, the amount of drilling activity is a good indicator of the health and growth of the barite industry. The four major barite-producing countries in the world are China, the United States, India and Morocco. In 2005, the average number of drilling rigs exploring for oil and gas increased by about 15 percent over the average number in 2004. This increase in oil and gas exploration has resulted in a higher demand for barite and an increase in barite production.

1. The investigation shows that the Sewanee bed is the only bed of major importance in Marion County, 97 percent of the coal mined in the county having come from this bed. There are coal reserves in minor quantity in the Battle Creek bed, and production from this bed depends on a few small truck mines. The Richland bed, or Lower Sewanee, has been mined in the past, but no coal has been produced from it in late years. There are no production records of any other beds in the county, although same coal has been produced from them. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 61 million short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 55 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate where available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to permit making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

IT does not seem practicable to review all the other specialized curricula that have developed in the mineral industries field in so much detail as has been given for petroleum. Nor is it easy to draw a definite line between true curricula, leading to a designated degree in the special subject, and options, which may range from the mere substitution of one or two courses for others ' in the final years to differences so extensive as almost to amount to separate curricula. Even to attempt to catalogue all the options that have been offered at one time or another would , require too much space. The remainder of this discussion, there- fore, will be confined to three topics which seem to be of major importance. Mining and metallurgical curricula will be covered in a later chapter. Geology The first, from the historical view, is geology in its relation to the mineral industries. Previous, chapters have made clear that in the early years of mineral industry instruction in the United States economic geology and mining engineering, so overlapped one another that men who were by training and experience economic geologists were appointed professors of mining, while men who had graduated as mining engineers sometimes developed into professors of geology. Even today men whose basic training was in- geology as a pure science, and who perhaps took a doctor's .degree in that subject, have attained such distinction in the mineral industries as to be universally accepted as "mining men," and their right to be regarded as mining engineers would not be questioned, even though 'they did not .take a degree in engineering. AT the Sladen-Malartic mine, a number of orebodies have been mined, some by shrinkage and others by open sub-level scopes, from which the ore is handled either through a grizzly system or by mechanical loaders. This paper deals with the comparative costs and relative merits of the two handling arrangements. The facts brought out in this comparison have a bearing on the selection of a proper handling method. The mine is in Fourniere township, northwestern Quebec, about forty miles east of the town of Rouyn. It is served by the Rouyn-Senneterre branch of the Canadian National railways. Two vertical three-compartment shafts give access to the present workings. No. 1 shaft, at which the plant is centralized, is the main hoisting shaft, with five levels to 950 feet. No. 2 shaft, 2,400 feet east of No. 1, is under development, with four levels to 725 feet. At the main shaft, the ore is hand-trammed in 1 1/2 tons cars from the scopes to the stations o:i each level and hoisted in cages to surface at a rope speed of 900 feet per minute. Air-operated tipples are used to dump the ore through grizzlies of 14-inch openings into a surface bin of 150 tons capacity. The ore hoisted at No. 2 shaft is trucked from the headframe bin to the mill. Milling commenced in January, 1938, ar a daily rate of 250 tons. Within two months this rate was increased to the unit's maximum capacity of 325 tons. A second unit to treat a further 325 tons daily was installed in April, 1939. The orebodies mined at No. 1 shaft are parts of a silicified zone at the contact between syenite porphyry and greywacke. The zone is ten co sixty feet wide, strikes easterly, and dips to the south at 55 to 85 degrees. The hanging-wall of the zone is marked, though not precisely, by a strong gouge fault. Locally, the boundary of silicification may be as much as twenty feet either above or below the fault, but for practical mining purposes the fault is the hanging-wall of the ore-zone. The footwall roughly parallels the fault, but as an assay wall it is usually irregular in detail. The ore is dense and hard, a siliceous replacement of both porphyry and greywacke, mineralized with fine disseminated pyrite.

"Mechanical alloying (MA) synthesizing technology and thennohydrogen processing (THP) were utilized to produce nanocrystalline Ti-MMC's reinforced by TiB intermetallic compound by using TiH2-B powder mixtures. Powders MA'ed up to 8 hours were examined by X-ray diffraction and SEM study. All MA'ed powders afterwards were HIP'ed at 700, 800 and 950EC for 1 hour. Detailed XRD, SEM and TEM study of the samples were carried out to determine the structure and micrography of the Ti-TiB MMC material processed by MA+THP approach followed by HIP'ing at high temperatures.IntroductionThe fiber reinforced titanium base composites [1,2] which possess a great resistance to high temperature have been investigated. In these studies fibers of C and SiC were used as reinforcing materials. However, these fibers react with Ti-matrix at elevated temperature resulting in product formation at the interface between the matrix and the fiber. Because of the chemical reactions, strength of the product MMC material diminishes.In conventional techniques of whisker reinforced composite material production, the mixtures of matrix metal powders and dispersed fibers are consolidated by hot pressing, HIP and/or hot extrusion. These techniques, however, have some shortcomings. Hard and brittle fibers could be broken during mixing cycle of the processing. Consolidation techniques could also be the cause for fiber breakdown. Attaining of the uniform dispersion of fibers into the metal matrix is not an easy process. The chemical reactions at elevated temperature exposures in the interface between the matrix material and fiber reinforcement cause product formations leading to poor mechanical properties."
