A scraper-based block cave method has been successfully applied to extract the Lower orebody at Nchanga since the 1950s. Since inception, scraper drifts and service ways have been supported using steel arch sets fabricated to a specific design from high strength manganese steel To reduce costs and to improve productivity, trials commenced in 2002 using fibre reinforced shotcrete as an alternative support method. One of the areas, the 2420 8E 1C trial drift, was subjected to abutment loading for several months prior to undercutting and cave mining. Shotcrete installed exhibited minor cracking shortly after application but very little deterioration thereafter. Following the success of the trial, the application of fibre-reinforced shotcrete was extended to other drifts. This paper describes the application of fibre-reinforced shotcreteat Nchanga and outlines design and quality assurance methods employed.

The Bureau of Mines has developed prototype instruments promising to improve the ability to warn of imminent roof falls. An unusually good opportunity to test these comparatively under natural caving conditions was afforded by the forecasted caving in August 1977 of a mined-out region of the White Pine Mine. The latter's rock strata closely resemble those in many coal mines. The anticipated cave was of the competent-roof/weak-pillar type. It occurred as, and when, predicted. Automated convergence and bed separation gages agreed well with the standard manual convergence gage measurements. A micro seismic gage was found to be insensitive to the fall and may require different test conditions for effectiveness. A roof resistivity unit was tested under a separate Bureau of Mines contract. (No. H02720J7). An unplanned addition showed interesting potential.

ABSTRACT : An experimental programme for damage assessment was performed in the vicinity of the main shaft of Andra’s Underground Research Laboratory, currently under construction in the East of France, when the shaft is crossing the Kimmeridgian marls between 80 and 100 m depth. The mechanical behaviour was analysed by mean of convergence and displacement measurements. The disturbance into the wall was assessed using numerous methods such as measurement of sonic velocities, permeability measurement and VSP measurement in radial boreholes. The intensity of the damaged zone is low, and its extension does not exceed 0.5 time the radius of the shaft. It does not seem to depend on blasting patterns. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG : Ein Forschungs- und Versuchsprogramm wurde aufgestellt, um die beschädigte Zone im Bereich der Kimmeridgemergel zwischen 80 und 100 Meter Tiefe beim Zugangsschacht des im Bau befindlichen Andralabors im Osten Frankreichs zu berechnen. Das mechanische Verhalten der Formationen wird auf der Grundlage von Konvergenz- und Verschiebungsmessungen ermittelt. Verschiedene Messmethoden, wie z.B. mikroseismische Geschwindigkeite Messungen, Permeabilitäs- und Beschleunigungsbestimmungen in strahlenförmigen Bohranordnungen, erlaubten die Ermittlung des Beschädigungscharakters der Schachtwand. Die Intensität der beschädigten Zone ist niedrig, ihre Ausdehnung übersteigt nicht die Hälfte des Radius des Zugangsstollens und scheint unabhängig vom Schema der Sprengstoffanordnungen zu sein. RESUME : Un programme expérimental visant à évaluer la zone endommagée autour du puits d’accès du Laboratoire de Recherche Souterrain de l’Andra actuellement en construction dans l’Est de la France a été mis en œuvre lors de la traversée des marnes du Kimméridgien entre 80 et 100 m de profondeur. Le comportement mécanique des formations est évalué à partir de mesures de convergence et de déplacements. La mise en œuvre de nombreuses méthodes, telles que des mesures microsismiques, des mesures de perméabilité et d’accélérométrie en forages radiaux, a permis de caractériser l’endommagement en paroi du puits. L’intensité de la zone endommagée est faible et son extension ne dépasse pas 0,5 fois le rayon du puits. L’endommagement semble indépendant des schémas de tirs testés.

High concentrations of airborne coal particles is the main reason leading to health and safety hazards in underground coalmines. Water spray is one of the effective methods to suppress coal particles in mine sites, but the use of plain water is not effective enough to capture coal particles. By adding surfactants, coal wettability can be improved which will increase the coal dust suppression efficiency. In this study, a modified sink test was employed to evaluate coal wettability in the presence of two anionic surfactants: sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). Sink rates were calculated by measuring sink weight over test time. Different surfactant concentrations (0.01 per cent, 0.05 per cent, 0.1 per cent, 0.2 per cent and 0.4 per cent) and two types of water (tap water and deionised water) were selected to investigate coal wettability over three size ranges (0–38, 53–75 and 75–90 µm). The results show that both SDS and SDBS surfactants can lower the water surface tension and improve coal wetting performance. Sink rates increased as the surfactant concentration increased, and surfactant solutions prepared by tap water performed better than deionised water in enhancing coal wettability. Also, coal wettability varied for different coal particle sizes; the smaller coal particles were, the worse the wettability they possessed.CITATION:Chen, Y, Xu, G, Wang, R and Albijanic, B, 2017. "Float dust deposits in coal mine return airways pose a risk in the event of a methane ignition. Controlling airborne dust prior to deposition in the return would make current rock dusting practices more effective and reduce risks of coal dust-fueled explosions. The goal of this NIOSH study is to determine the potential of open-air water sprays to reduce concentrations of airborne float coal dust (<75 µm diameter) in longwall face airstreams. This study evaluated unconfined water sprays in a featureless tunnel ventilated at a typical longwall face velocity. Experiments were conducted for two nozzle orientations and two water pressures for hollow cone, full cone, flat fan, air atomizing, and hydraulic atomizing spray nozzles. Gravimetric samples show that airborne float dust removal efficiencies averaged 19.6 percent for all sprays under all conditions. The results indicate that the preferred spray nozzle is operated at high fluid pressures to produce smaller droplets and move more air. These findings can be used to select sprays and design spray arrays to control airborne float dust over the entire longwall ventilated opening. INTRODUCTION Coal mining processes produce airborne dust that naturally deposits on the floor, roof, and ribs of mine airways. These fine dust particles, termed float coal dust when smaller than 75 microns in diameter, are deposited in return entries of coal mines and can be re-entrained by pressure waves induced by methane-air explosions (Rice et al., 1911; Nagy, 1981; NIOSH, 2006). These particles are also those most likely to participate in coal dust-fueled explosions, which can potentiate and propagate explosions resulting in extensive damage. In order to meet compliance requirements of at least 80 percent incombustible content in the composition of material deposited in mine entries (CFR, 2016), coal mines apply an inerting agent, specifically, rock dust (Harris et al., 2009). Should methane be present in the mine atmosphere, the required fraction of incombustible content is further increased by 0.4 percent for each 0.1 percent methane. The removal of airborne float coal dust (AFCD) prior to deposition is an approach intended to make current rock dusting practices more effective by increasing the proportion of inert material to combustible material, resulting in a lower risk of coal dust-fueled explosions. Water sprays are both effective and widely accepted as a method for controlling underground coal mine dust. In fact, water sprays are considered to be the most economical and technically feasible means of reducing dust concentrations in underground coal mines (Courtney and Cheng, 1977; Barker and Humphreys, 1996). Sprays are used in several ways to control dust in mining processes: inhibiting dust formation, immobilizing dust to prevent it from becoming airborne, and capturing airborne dust (Cheng, 1973). Reductions in airborne dust concentrations have frequently been attributed to inertial impaction between water droplets and dust particles, forming larger agglomerates which then quickly precipitate out of the airstream (McPherson, 1993). Inertial impaction activity is generally accepted as the major capture mechanism for airborne particles larger than 0.5 µm in diameter. It is this mechanism that is evaluated in this study."

Over 206 million tons of hard coal were mined in South African collieries in 1996. Some 132.5 millions tons came from underground operations and approximately 120 million tons came from bord-and-pillar workings resulting in between 100 000 and 150 000pillars being formed. Coal pillar design remains a significant feature of South African mining. This paper reviews South African coal pillar design procedures in the light of 90 pillar collapses that have occurred since 1904. It shows that, while the current pillar strength formula is still valid within the original empirical range of Salamon1,cognisance must be taken of local conditions. Current South African coal pillar research is attempting to account for the variations in local conditions with the emphasis on the effect of discontinuities and pillar deterioration. It is suggested that a more holistic approach to pillar design be adopted to include a design methodology that examines the stability of the roof, pillar and floor of the underground workings. Using this approach, deviations from the empirical database used by Salamon and Munro will be incorporated into the design methodology resulting in more stable underground workings.

Small replacements of C12-trithiocarbonate (C12-TTC) for dithiocarbonate (DTC)/dithiophosphate (DTP) in a reagent suite for the flotation of platinum group metals (PGM) have significantly improved the rejection of gangue. Coupled to this is an improvement in kinetics, grade and recovery of PGMs. In a pilot-plant trial, after a 5 mole per cent replacement of the current DTC/DTP collector combination by C12-TTC, large opaque bubbles were replaced by small clear ones. In addition, a similar flotation response was realized with one-third of the current depressant dosage. During a preliminary plant trial on underground UG2 ore, the initial rougher concentrates were characterized by higher PGM concentrate grades and this was in part due to improved chromiter ejection. The concentrate produced from the TTC trial also exhibited a much finer particle size distribution. The overall circuit performance, which included secondary regrind and flotation, showed an increase in concentrate grade of approximately 44% while the tailings grade remained unchanged

More than 80% of U.S. roof bolts are fully-grouted, but about 1500 roof falls are reported each year. Anchorage failure of a fully grouted bolt can occur when the roof is active near the top of the hole. This paper reports on an extensive series of short-encapsulation pull tests (in which the bolts are installed with only 1 ft of resin) that were conducted in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mine Safety Research Laboratory and operating mines in WV and PA. The tests confirmed that poor anchorage can been countered under some weak rock conditions. Suggestions for improving anchorage are included.

As part of a long-term study of titanium minerals processing being undertaken by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre, techniques have been developed to measure the resistivity of ilmenite, rutile, zircon and other associated minerals. The techniques have proven reproducible and have allowed the measurement of resistivity under conditions of varying temperature, surface condition and surface moisture adsorption. The measured values can be linked to the separability of the minerals in the dry plant, and hence are useful as a diagnostic test for existing plants when performance deteriorates, or for greenfield sites to investigate potential problems. One of the major problems in electrical separation of titanium minerals is surface coating on the mineral grains. Coatings can make normally conductive minerals such as ilmenite and leucoxene behave much more like non-conductors. Electrical separation of surface contaminated ilmenite from non-conductors then becomes extremely difficult unless the surface contaminant is first removed. The resistivity measurement technique was used to evaluate the effect of surface cleaning on the resistivity of ilmenite and zircon from a Western Australian deposit which will shortly be in production. Ten different attritioning methods were evaluated, ranging from simple rinsing inwater to chemical attritioning in sulphuric acid combined with ultrasonic leaching. A roasting and quenching step was also investigated. As would be expected, the gentler treatments, such as rinsing in water or Calgon, had only amoderate effect on the ilmenite surface coatings. Ilmenite resistivity decreased by about 1 order of magnitude from 5.6 x108?m to between 2.5 and 4.4 x107?m. More intense treatments had a much more pronounced effect. The most effective, reduced ilmenite resistivity to 6.5 x105?m or three orders of magnitude. Zircon was relatively unaffected by any of the attritioning methods, with only a small increase in resistivity observed from 8.0 x1012?m to 2 x1013 ?m. The results show that measurement of mineral resistivity allows the effect of surface treatments to be easily quantified in a way that has benefits for greenfield site development where only small samples are available for testing. The effect of surface moisture has also been investigated using resistivity measurements. Measurements were made on zircon in an environmental chamber in which both humidity and temperature could be closely controlled. Zircon resistivity at 60 deg C decreased from 6 x1011?m at 5% relative humidity to 8 x108?m at 95% humidity. Moisture content and moisture re-adsorption from dry of zircon and number of other minerals were measured using a Mettler moisture analyser. Zircon adsorbed the least amount of surface moisture (0.05–0.09%) but re-adsorbed moisture from dry the fastest, reaching 98% of the original level in 10 minutes. Leucoxene adsorbed the most moisture (0.67%), but was much slower re-adsorbing this moisture from the dry state, reaching only 63% of the original level in 10 minutes. The difference was attributed to the surface characteristics of the grains, the leucoxene being much more porous than the zircon examined. The resistivities and differing rates of moisture adsorption can be used to quantify the effects of changes in atmospheric conditions of the performance of electrical separation in dry plants.

It is well known that the electrochemical precipitation of metals from aqueous solutions is conducted by the electrochemical standard potential scale. This scale indicates the order of nobility of different metals. Consequently, the standard potential scale shows the nocivity of metals when they are present as impurities in aqueous solutions containing metals. In the hydrometallurgy of cobalt, nickel and zinc are co-deposited during cobalt electrodeposition. Nickel has almost the same chemical, physical and electro-chemical properties as cobalt. Furthermore, the electrochemical potential of nickel is relatively higher than that of cobalt. For this reason nickel is preferentially reduced at the cathode in the presence of cobalt. The presence of small amounts of zinc in solution leads to contamination of cobalt electrowon. In spite of its lower electrochemical potential in comparison to cobalt, zinc is reduced on the cathode because of its higher hydrogen-overvoltage. But, in the hydrometallurgy of zinc, small amounts of cobalt present solution will contaminate the zinc reduced at the cathode. This is easily explained by the fact that cobalt is more electropositive than zinc. The co-deposition mechanism of sulphur at the cathode is not yet well understood. Great attention has to be paid to the mechanism of co-deposition of sulphur during cobalt electrolysis. This work aimed to investigate the influence of some parameters on the co-deposition of nickel, zinc and sulphur during cobalt electrowinning. The following parameters have been investigated: Co2+concentration in the electrolyte, current density and ammonium sulphate (NH4)2SO4additions. It has been established that important nickel, zinc and sulphur co-deposition takes place at relatively low Co2+ concentration in solution. The behaviour of these elements with regard to the cathodic phenomena has been established.

High Pressure Sulfuric Acid/Oxygen Leaching of Platinum Group Metals Bearing Ni-Cu Mattes The processing of platinum bearing Ni-Cu ores for the extraction of platinum group metals (PGMs) involves comminution, flotation, smelting, and converter treatment of the furnace matte. Leaching circuits are predominantly used for further processing to separate the base metals and PGMs contained in the converter matte. Nickel dissolution is primarily achieved in the first stage leach (high pressure or atmospheric leaching, or a combination of the two), which is followed by second stage high pressure sulphuric acid/oxygen leaching to dissolve copper and the remaining nickel. PGMs are recovered from the leaching residue in downstream processes, and their dissolution in the first two leaching stages must hence be limited. Studies have been conducted to investigate the leaching mechanisms and kinetics of base metals in different leaching environments. The key operating parameters that influence the leaching kinetics of these metals include the temperature, acid concentration, degree of agitation, feed particle size distribution, and oxygen partial pressure. There is, however, a limited understanding of the behaviour of PGMs in the high pressure leaching process. Consequently, this process is controlled based on operators&apos; intuition despite its importance in the recovery of PGMs. An improved fundamental understanding of the behaviour of PGMs in this leaching environment is required to be able to accurately model the process. This in turn will allow the development of an improved control strategy and the estimation of optimum operating conditions. An overview of the leaching mechanisms of base metals and the effects of key operating parameters on their dissolution kinetics in different leaching environments are presented. Models that have been developed to predict the leaching behaviour of base metals are discussed and evaluated. Finally, initial results obtained with an experimental setup that will be used to investigate the behaviour of PGMs in high pressure leaching systems are discussed and compared with published results.

The results of a field-scale study involving in situ leaching of copper ore tailings using sulphuric acid as the leaching agent, injection wells to introduce the leaching solution and extraction wells to recover the copper-enriched pregnant leaching solution are presented. The study was performed at an abandoned tailings disposal site using a battery of injection and extraction wells. The medium was characterized through the determinations of physical, chemical, mineralogical, and hydro-dispersive properties based on laboratory and field tests, including a tritium tracer test, a pumping test, particle size analyses, and hydraulic conductivity tests. Numerous horizontal strata with different hydraulic conductivities were identified. A previously developed model was used to simulate the leaching of copper ore tailings. Although the study confirms the feasibility of using in situ leaching for recovery of residual copper from tailings deposits, the efficiency of the technology depends significantly on the medium stratigraphy and hydraulic conductivity.

The earliest authenticated scientific report of the occurrence of platinum in rocks from the Bushveld Complex appears to be by William Bettel on 10 November 1906. Thereafter, prospecting of the chromite-rich rocks for platinum proved frustrating. I suggest that the resurgence of interest shown by Dr Hans Merensky in 1924 resulted from his realization that newly panned platinum had a different grain size from that in the chromite layers and indicated a different source rock, which he located, and it became known as the Merensky Reef.

Oxide gold reserves are being rapidly depleted, especially in regions with long histories of gold mining, such as the Black Hills of South Dakota. However, these districts often have substantial additional deposits, where gold is refractory. It is not amenable to traditional cyanide extraction due to the presence of sulfide minerals that encapsulate or otherwise preclude the economic extraction of the gold. Several technologies have been developed to render refractory sulfide deposits amenable to traditional cyanide processing. These include roasting and pressure autoclaving. Unfortunately, these oxidation processes require substantial capital investment and incur significant operating costs. Microorganisms that obtain energy for their life processes by the oxidation of iron sulfides can be used to treat gold-bearing refractory sulfide minerals. As the bacteria convert the sulfide to sulfate, they expose any gold associated with the sulfide matrix. This makes the gold amenable to cyanide extraction.

The technology of the liquid-phase reduction process known as Romelt was developed in the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys in 1979. The pilot plant was constructed at the Novolipetsky Steel Works (Russia) in 1984. Investigations into processing zinc-containing blast oxygen furnace dust and slag from the Lead and Zinc Works at the pilot Romelt plant proved the perspective of using this technology for processing zinc and lead-containing materials. In this article, the description of Romelt technology, basic technological information of trials at the Romelt plant using zinc-containing materials, compositions of charging materials, metal, slag, gas and dust are presented. The influence of flue gas composition on the composition of zinccontaining dust is shown.

Changes in feed size distribution can have significant effects in rod mill grinding. The product sizing resulting from wet batch milling of a tin ore showed little influence on fines production after truncating the feed at either the coarse or fine end. The addition of fine material caused a less amount of fines to be produced and a possible increase in grinding at coarse sizes, although this is complicated by the changing feed size distribution. The changes in feed size distribution caused no tendency for preferential grinding of the cassiterite.
