The mining industry?s traditional preference for protective coatings in corrosive environments, due to cost considerations, has been to apply galvanized and epoxy coatings. As a result of extreme pH levels and the limitations of current products, a new coating has been developed to withstand severe conditions. Harsh chemicals and corrosive groundwater pose added challenges to mines in maintaining long term ground support which demands continuous rehabilitation. This paper highlights the challenges and identifies a solution by applying a new economic coating to DSI?s Omega Bolt? that withstands the most corrosive of conditions. [ ]

Abstract-The Campo Morado precious-metal-bearing, volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits occur in a lower Cretaceous, bimodal, calc-alkaline volcanic sequence in a major northerly trending belt in the Guerrero Terrane in northeastern Guerrero, Mexico. During upper Cretaceous to Early Tertiary greenschist-facies regional metamorphism, the rocks were deformed strongly into a northeast-verging fold-and-thrust belt. Three later stages of weak deformation were dominated, respectively, by kink folds, broad warps, and extensional faults. Most deposits occur in the upper part of a sequence of felsic flows and heterolithic volcanoclastic rocks or at its contact with overlying chert and argillite-sandstone. The Reforma and El Rey massive sulfide deposits are on the overturned limb of a major, thrusted anticline, and the Naranjo and El Largo massive sulfide deposits are to the south on the upright limb of the same major fold. The La Lucha and San Rafael massive sulfide occurrences are in an upper plate to the southwest which was thrusted over the plate containing the Naranjo and El Largo deposits. In several of the deposits, Au, Ag, Zn, and Pb are concentrated near the stratigraphic top, and Cu is concentrated near the stratigraphic base. Major minerals are pyrite, quartz, ankerite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and galena. Minor minerals are tennantite-freibergite, arsenopyrite, and pyrrhotite. Gold and Ag occur in argentian gold, and Ag also occurs in tennantite-freibergite. The cumulative inferred resource of massive sulfide for the Reforma, Naranjo, El Rey, and El Largo deposits exceeds 30 Mt, with the latter two deposits incompletely delineated. Underlying pyrite-quartz stockwork zones contain chalcopyrite, chlorite, and sphalerite. Hydrothermal alteration minerals in the stratigraphic footwall are pyrite, quartz, chlorite, ferroan dolomite, and ankerite. In the stratigraphic hangingwall, hydrothermal alteration minerals are sericite, calcite-dolomite, and lesser clay minerals and quartz. The deposits belong to a low-sulfidation, volcanogenic massive sulfide system formed in a subaqueous environment, and are of the bimodal, siliciclastic type.

Accident rates continue to show that underground mining jobs areamong the most hazardous occupations in the United States and roof bolter operators continue to have one of the highest accident incident rates (MSHA, 1991) despite efforts by labor, government, and industry to reduce and eliminate work-related hazards. In the last two decades we have seen technical innovations such as the ATRS, and there has been an increased emphasis on hazard awareness through programs such as MSHA's REAP, but bolter operators continue to be injured and killed. Researchers at West Virginia University examined risk in the roof bolter's job and developed new approaches to accident and injury prevention. The study concentrated on the workers' job performance, machinery and the work environment to identify miner's risk and hazard exposure while bolting.

Alluvial gold is an ideal exploration tracer to bedrock source and indicator of bedrock mineralisation style because: (i) gold occurs in a wide range of deposit types, (ii) primary composition is sensitive to style of mineralisation, and (iii) it is a heavy resistate mineral that is readily preserved and easily sampled. In regional exploration of the Central Ranges of Irian Jaya, alluvial gold mineralogy has been applied to maximise the information return from panned concentrate sampling and to focus exploration effort. Primary gold is a solid solution of Au+Ag¦Cu¦Hg, ¦ trace Pd, Te, and Sb. In general Ag¦Hg increase and Cu decreases with inferred decreasing temperature of formation, and gold from particular mineralisation styles has signature compositions that can be used as indicators of bedrock mineralisation type. Furthermore, the abundance of alluvial gold is an indicator of the economic potential of a catchment. The convergent continental-oceanic plate geology of the Central Ranges is conducive to a wide range of mineralisation styles. Mineralogy of gold in ophiolite, skarn, porphyry, mesothermal vein and possible VHMS environments is characterised from alluvial and bedrock samples, and the use of gold mineralogy in prospecting at regional scale through prospect definition to drilling is demonstrated.

The purpose of the work described in this report was to measure the effects of diesel engine emissions on the air quality of work areas in a coal mine. Concentration measurements of a number of diesel related air contaminants were made at the Martin County Coal Corporation Mine in Inez, Kentucky. Compounds measured included carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, nitric oxide, and nitrogen dioxide. In addition, concentrations of the two classes of odorous compound;, aromatic hydrocarbons, and oxygenates were obtained along, with aldehyde concentrations. Surveys were made of the mine by odor analysts to determine the perceived intensity of diesel-produced odors. It was found that the concentrations of the measured species were well below their Threshold Limit Values. Odor intensity levels in the moderate to strong range were observed in the mine.

As primeiras argamassas utilizadas em construções pelo homem continham em sua composição, materiais argilosos. Porém, por ser um material com muitas cargas elétricas livres, as argilas reagem constantemente com a água, ocasionando grande variação linear que acaba causando fissuração nas argamassas feitas com esse material. Assim, para solucionar esse problema, passou-se a utilizar cal hidratada no lugar dos materiais argilosos. Dessa maneira, mesmo não sendo composta por argila, a argamassa mantém sua trabalhabilidade. Nesse cenário, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo balancear estequiometricamente a cal hidratada e as argilas estudadas, para utilizar essas quantidades em argamassas para revestimento, barateando assim o material. Para encontrar esse balanceamento estequiométrico calculou-se a massa molar para um mol de cal hidratada e para um mol teórico de argila. Assim foram estipuladas algumas proporções possíveis de balanceamento da equação de reação cal+argila. Além disso, foram confeccionados corpos de prova, variando as quantidades de argila e cal, para realização de ensaios de capilaridade, a fim de comprovar a eficácia dos resultados encontrados no balanceamento teórico.

"Over the years, it has been increasingly difficult for the minerals industry to raise the necessary capital for its activities. To alleviate this phenomenon, complete transparency and capital market efficiency is needed. Since a company’s mineral resources and mineral reserves base is an essential component to obtaining capital, reporting these assets must also be transparent and efficient. This must occur, however, at an international level given that mineral industry operations, and its financing, are international. To achieve this, an international committee (i.e. Australia, Canada, South Africa, the United Kingdom and Europe, and the United States) was formed and has been developing standards for the reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves.The effectiveness of these standards, however, depends on adoption by the required regulators. Unfortunately, these standards have not been recognized by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Instead, the SEC adheres to its old standard (Industry Guide 7), making it increasingly expensive and difficult for international mining companies to obtain capital in the United States. Compounding the problem is the SEC’s influence over the current work of the International Accounting Standards Board and the International Organization Organization of Securities Commissions. These organizations are in the process of standardizing international accounting practices and international securities rules and regulations. Their current position may prevent adoption of the industry-developed mineral resources and mineral reserves standards which are internationally recognized."

THIS CHAPTER of the Minerals Yearbook contains injury experience and related employment information for the coal-mining, coking, oil and gas, peat, and native asphalt industries in the United States for 1963. No attempt has been made to combine these data and present injury-frequency rates reflecting the mineral-fuel industries because the hazards of the separate industries are not comparable. Tabulations showing the trend of injuries and employment for all mineral industries are presented in Volume III of the Minerals Yearbook. COAL Injury experience of the coal-mining industry was improved slightly in 1963, as measured by the 2-percent decline in the Injury-frequency rate. Although the total number of fatal and nonfatal injuries increased 1 percent, the greater proportional increase of 3 percent in man-hours worked accounted for the improved frequency rate. Employment and injury data for 1963 are based on final data for anthracite mines and preliminary data for bituminous coal and lignite mines.

Mineral liberation data are routinely obtained for a wide variety of applications, including ore characterization and characterization of various metallurgical test products obtained in bench-scale laboratory testwork. Newmont Mining Corporation owns several properties in the Carlin Trend containing refractory gold ores. These ores are generally difficult to treat and have to undergo several processing stages for gold recovery. At Carlin?s Mill 5 operation, flotation is used to pre-concentrate some of these difficult ores to produce a sulfide concentrate to feed the roaster. It is of interest from a flotation perspective to be able to study the floatability of pyrite, arsenopyrite and arsenian pyrite, since these minerals all have different quantities of gold associated with them, and have to be recovered to ensure a successful separation has been achieved. In this paper, a detailed MLA study on several Carlin ores was undertaken on samples from flotation tests, using air or nitrogen as flotation gas, specifically to study the differences in floatability characteristics, which ultimately impacts overall gold recovery. Avmin have developed a flowsheet for the refining of copper, nickel and cobalt from Nkomati concentrates. Cobalt is recovered from calcium-saturated solution using Cyanex® 272. Nickel is subsequently extracted using versatic acid. The loaded organic is stripped using spent electrolyte, producing advance electrolyte for recovery of nickel by electrowinning. Cobalt was recovered with >99.5% extraction efficiency, reducing cobalt from 1.8 g/l to <10 mg/l. The cobalt/nickel ratio in the cobalt product solution was >1500. Nickel solvent extraction was optimized to recover 99%, reducing the nickel concentration from 32 g/l to <0.3 g/l, while minimizing calcium deportment to the nickel electrowinning circuit.

The Myra Falls deposits comprise a complexly metal-zoned polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide district located 90 km from Campbell River in central Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The massive sulfide deposits are hosted by subaqueously-deposited rocks of the Devonian age Myra Formation of the Sicker Group volcanic assemblage. The deposits comprise many individual massive sulfide lenses grouped into several major zones within two main felsic volcanic stratigraphic intervals - the upper Lynx-Myra-Price Horizon and the lower H-W Horizon. The largest of these zones, the H-W and Battle, occur within the H-W Horizon. The first claims in the area of what is now Boliden-Westmin?s Myra Falls Operations were staked in 1917. Early prospecting resulted in the discovery of three massive sulfide showings which eventually became the Lynx, Myra and Price mines. Sporadic exploration was carried out until 1961 when Western Mines Ltd. (now Boliden-Westmin Ltd.) acquired the claims. Subsequent ore definition outlined 1.9 million tonnes of ore (approximately 5 years of mine life) in the Lynx deposit, and mining began in 1966. Pre-mining geological reserves (to January 1, 1997) comprised 6.7 million tonnes grading 3.3 g/t Au, 130.6 g/t Ag, 2.0 % Cu, 1.4 % Pb and 10.2 % Zn for the Lynx-Myra-Price deposits, 17.1 million tonnes grading 2.3 g/t Au, 32.7 g/t Ag, 2.3 % Cu, 0.3 % Pb and 4.2 % Zn for the H-W deposits and 4.2 million tonnes grading 1.1 g/t Au, 27.0 g/t Ag, 2.2 % Cu, 0.5 % Pb and 12.0 % Zn for the Battle deposits. Property-wide production to January, 1996 has been 15.7 million tonnes grading 2.1 g/t Au, 58.7 g/t Ag, 1.9 % Cu, and 5.2 % Zn.

The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal in the United States suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known (measured plus indicated) recoverable reserves of all coking coal; (2) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation; and (3) to study the carbonizing properties of coals and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making. This is the sixth of a series of reports giving the results of studies by counties under part (1) of the investigation. (See appendix.) This report covers Fayette County, Pa., which comprises the Uniontown and parts of the Brownsville, Connellsville, Donegal, Waynesburg, Masontown, and Confluence, Pa., Morgantown and Bruceton, W. Va., and Accident, Md., quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A short resume of the chemical and carbonizing properties of the coals ar.9 included. Data on the coal beds in this county were obtained from mining companies, land companies, individual landowners, and other sources of authentic information.

THE Magdalen islands have recently been attracting attention as a possible source of manganese. As early as 1880 small masses of manganese oxides were known to occur in the soil and at least one attempt was made to develop them. In 1939, after the outbreak of war, interest in the possibilities of the field was again aroused and during the winter of 1939-40 claims were taken up by two groups of Toronto interests. The islands also contain large quantities of gypsum. During the summer of 1940, the writer mapped the islands geologically, giving particular attention to a study of the manganese occurrences. For a base-map, the chart of the islands was enlarged to a scale of half a mile to an inch. Additional roads were added from traverses carried out in connection with the geological work, and form lines with approximate 100-foot intervals were put on from barometer readings. The geological map is the first that has been prepared of the islands. Previous Work In the summer of 1880, James Richardson of the Geological Survey of Canada studied the rocks of the islands and his r~port concerning them appears as Part G of the Report of Progress, 1879-80. In 1903, J. Obalski, Inspector of Mines for the Department of Lands, Mines and Fisheries of the Province of Quebec, visited the islands, chiefly to investigate the occurrences of manganese and gypsum, and his notes are found in the report on mining operations in the Province for that year. Around 1890, Robert Chalmers of the Geological Survey paid a visit to the islands, and his observations, which chiefly concerned the surface geology, appear in the Annual Report of the Survey, Vol. VII, 1894, Part M, p. 94. The next geological work was carried out by John M. Clarke, Director of the New York State Geological Survey. Clarke paid many visits to Gaspé peninsula between the years 1900 and 1920, collecting fossils and gathering h1s~orical data, and extended his investigations of Gaspé county over to the Magdalens. His Observations on the Magda/en Islands is included in the New York State Museum Bulletin 149, seventh report of the Director, 1910.

"Gold cyanidation kinetics which are often limited in commercial operations by the rate of oxygen dissolution from gas bubbles into the slurry, are discussed. Emerging technologies for improving the rate of oxygen dissolution are compared and the gas efficiency, energy use and operating performance of inverted cones and a device based on a jet diffuser are examined. The effect of solids loading is also reviewed and a relationship between operating parameters and the kilograms oxygen dissolved per kilowatt-hour is presented.Inverted cones are shown to create slurry settling problems at high gas flow rates and surface tension lowering agents are shown not to greatly improve the overall rates of oxygen dissolution.The novel jet diffuser technology operates at a range of gas to liquid ratios that improves its energy use over conventional technology and the performance of a number of designs are discussed.Gas efficiencies as high as 35% were observed with the novel diffusers at 40 cm diffuser immersion and are expected to increase at greater immersions. Energy use of 1.8 kg 02 I kWh were estimated for prototype full size diffusers operating at 100 cm immersion. Energy use of 3.S kg 02 /kWh is conservatively expected at 600 cm immersion.IntroductionGold ExtractionGold that can not be recovered by gravity separation can be recovered by either the Merrill-Crow process or the newer carbon in pulp (CIP) or carbon in leach (CIL) processes 1. Estimation of iron ore grade distribution has been attempted using geostatistics and artificial neural network (ANN) based models for a banded iron formation (BIF) type iron ore deposit of East India. Geologically, it is a supergene iron ore formation through an enrichment process of parent material (BIFs) by gradual leaching of impurities, namely SiO2 and Al2O3. As the degree of leaching differs spatially, distribution of Fe varies depending on local controls of ore formation. While geostatistical methods work on models based on spatial correlations of mineralisation parameters, ANN models a non-linear distribution and is widely used as a global approximator. Spatial distribution modelling of Fe values has been carried out employing ordinary kriging (OK) and sequential Gaussian simulation (SGS). Non-linear modelling has been performed using hybrid neural networks (HNN) that provided an alternative option for grade estimation. Classical statistical modelling revealed a negatively skewed 3-parameter lognormal Fe population having a mean of 60.49 per cent with a skewness of -0.08 and a kurtosis of 2.60. Semi-variography and geostatistical estimation employing OK procedure led to block-by-block kriged estimates with associated kriging variance, which provided an overall mean kriged estimate and kriging variance of Fe as 60.29 per cent and 7.76 (per cent)2 respectively. SGS procedure revealed a mean of 60.71 per cent and a standard deviation of 5.89 per cent with minimum and maximum values as 45.12 per cent and 68.70 per cent respectively in respect of Fe. HNN model provided values of mean squared error (MSE) and correlation coefficient (R2) as 12.33 and 0.61 respectively, thereby exhibiting the robustness of the model to sustain maximum heterogeneity within the target domain. A comparison of Fe grade estimates obtained by kriging, simulation and HNN models more or less maintain similar distribution patterns that are close to the sample data. It is thus opined to carry out the grade prediction exercise employing all these three modelling approaches to obtain alternative scenarios for improved mine planning and design exercises. Mining up to depths of 5 000 m would be a world first and, accordingly, no previous experience in the determination of acceptable heat stress limits, criteria or indices is wholly applicable. However, some South African gold mines are already operating at depths beyond 3000 m and much of the knowledge gained in reaching and working at such depths will be helpful in making adequate provision for acceptable environmental control at the greater depths being contemplated. Accordingly, it is necessary to take cognisance of the industry?s experience in deep-level mining and of standards and regulations already established in South Africa and elsewhere in order to ensure acceptable working conditions and control standards, that compare favourably and defensibly with those in other mining industries. The local and international use of heat stress limits, criteria and indices were investigated as it was necessary to determine to what extent any other indices, limits or criteria would be applicable to South African deep mine conditions. In addition, it was necessary to establish whether there was a single heat stress index that could be used for South African ultra deep mining conditions. It was found that an appropriate combination of heat stress indices would be required in planning for and ultimately controlling thermal conditions in ultra-deep mining. The depths being contemplated and the concomitant potential heat hazard present too great a risk for reliance on a single environmental component of heat stress, such as wet-bulb temperature at present in common use locally. The study recommends that a heat stress index, preferably Air Cooling Power (ACP), be used to design an ultra deep mine?s ventilation system and that wet-bulb temperature be used to monitor and control the system once it is implemented.
