The Chambishi Metals Cobalt Plant in Zambia has recently installed a novel oxidation/precipitation pressure leach process as part of the COSAC (CObalt from Slag And Copper as by-product) Project. Aniron-cobalt-copper alloy, produced by the carbothermic reduction of slag, is atomized and pumped to the COSAC Leach Plant, where cobalt and copper are recovered as dissolved sulphate salts, andiron is rejected primarily as hematite. Cobalt and copper are subsequently recovered as cathode metal in the existing Chambish ioperation by conventional electrowinning. This paper examines the challenges faced during the design and subsequent successful commissioning of the COSAC Leach Plant. The challenges discussed include alloy handling, autoclave design, autoclave cooler design, residue liquor recovery and the water balance design. The European Union (EU) completed a new directive 2002/44/EC1 called the Physical Agents Directive (PAD) that establishes action and limit values for hand-arm and whole body vibrations. The directive specifies that: “…workers shall not be exposed above the exposure ‘limit value’.” 1 and “…once the exposure action values … are exceeded, the employer shall establish and implement a programme of technical and/or organisational measures intended to reduce to a minimum exposure to mechanical vibration and the attendant risks…” 1 The PAD limit value is effective for new machines starting July 6, 2007 and for used machines by at least July 6, 2010. These requirements apply to the users of machines, but machine manufacturers will be challenged to provide machines and information to help the users comply with the directive. Caterpillar manufactures machines with the goal of enabling our customers to comply with all regulations dealing with health and safety. Caterpillar designs all of our machines to provide a safe, comfortable and productive work environment. This study was to determine if seat suspensions could provide a reduction in the vibration environment experienced by operators of Caterpillar mid sized (<50,000KG) Track Type Tractors Methods Seat manufacturers were asked to provide seat suspensions that provide improved isolation over and above current seat suspension. Each supplier was provided with ride profiles and was asked to demonstrate the vibration reduction on a shaker table. Two suppliers provided suspensions that were compared with the current seat suspension in a field study. Three full factorial experiments were conducted. The first experiment was to evaluate overall suspension performance for four operations. The second experiment was to determine the benefit of the adjustable vertical damper at three different levels and the third experiment was to determine the effect of the fore/aft and side/side isolators. Six operators were used for the study. Acceleration was measured at the seat base and at the operator seat pad. Both the transfer function and the ISO 2631 RMS ride values were used to determine the seat suspension’s effectiveness of isolating the operator from vibration. A structured questionnaire was used to determine the operators’ subjective assessment of the seat suspensions. Results There was significant operator-to-operator variability in the vertical direction (>35%), however there was little variability in the fore/aft and side/side direction based on seat base

Since the Hardy Cross numerical algorithm was applied to the solution of mine ventilation networks, there have been numerous developments in ventilation network analysis procedures. The Newton-Raphson method, the linear theory method, and the second-order approximation method are three of the additional approaches that have been applied. The efficiency of a ventilation network analysis procedure depends not only on the method of solving the system of equations derived from ventilation networks, but also on the method of deriving the equations through selection of the meshes. This paper investigates the impacts of three mesh selection methods on the efficiencies of four ventilation network procedures. The minimum-resistance spanning tree method is the most popular procedure for selecting meshes. The shortest-path method was suggested by Epp and Fowler (1970) for improvement of the Newton-Raphson method. The minimum-resistance-path method is suggested here as the third method of selecting meshes. The effects of these three methods on the Hardy Cross method, the Newton-Raphson method, the linear theory method, and the second-order approximation method are analyzed in this paper. These network analysis methods have been summarized in the paper by Kim and Mutmansky (1991).

Coals are found in all parts of Alaska, ranging in geologic age from Carboniferous to Tertiary, and grading from lignite through anthracite. Only the Matanuska and Nenana coal fields have been extensively developed. Nenana Field Today roughly 94% of the coal mined in Alaska comes from the Nenana field near Healy. The coal-bearing horizons in the Nenana field are found in a sedimentary sequence of Tertiary age approximately 2800 ft in thickness. The sediments rest directly on schists of possible Precambrian age. Individual coal beds in the field have been designated by both letters and numbers, starting with the alphabetical designations from A to G, and the numbers 1 to 6. Of these coals, the principal beds that are mined are F, 1, 2, and 3. These vary greatly in thickness, e.g., bed 1 ranges to over 50 ft, and beds 2 and 3 to 30-40 ft.

The current limit to power transmission for grinding mills through one mill pinion is approximately 7,500kW. Above this power rating either twin pinion arrangements or Gearless drives are required. The SMTP concept was developed to overcome this limitation by using two pinions with a single large drive motor. The SMTP mill drive offers major advantages in capital cost and greatly simplifies plant layouts, while using an innovative adaptation of industry-proven single helical gearing. Through the use of a single motor, provision of variable speed drive is greatly simplified. The SMTP can also be used for significant power upgrades on existing mills.

At its Port Kembla Plant, Australian Fertilizers Ltd. manufactures Superphosphate and other Phosphatic Fertilizers.Phosphate Rock is received from Nauru and Ocean Island. It contains water insoluble tri-calcium phosphate, Ca3(PO4), to an average of about 86%.It is crushed to pass a 20-mesh x 26-gauge woven wire screen, and is then treated with Sulphuric Acid to give the product Superphosphate with a water solubie prosphate content of 20.5%, estimated as P205. Sulphuric Acid is made by the chamber process. Three sets of chambers are installed, on,e five-chamber set of timber frame work construction and the other two of more recent date, each with four chambers of steel frame work construction. A fourth chamber set is now being built.Sulphuric Acid is delivered for use. at about 70% H2S04, the strength depending upon the rock used.Mixing - The crushed rock and sulphuric acid are mixed in weighed and measured proportions respectiyely in one-ton batches in revolving cast fron pans, mechanically stirred. The mixture, while still slurry, is run into a closed horizontal concrete cylinder (den) where, with the completion of the chemical reaction, it rapidly sets as Superphosphate.Approximately fifty batches are required to fill a den. When full, the den is opened ana the mass cut out by a revolving cutter. The product is elevated and conveyed to any required position in the Superphosphate storage shed, where it dries and matures.Despatch - As required, the Superphosphate is excavated by a two ton grab and conveyed from the matured &quot;dump&quot; to bagging units where it is disintegrated, screened and bagged at twelve bags to the ton. The filled !Jags are closed by machine and delivered to railway trucks immediately.Mixed Fertilizers - Sulphate of Ammonia, Sulphate and Muriate, of Potash, and Blood and Bone are mixed with Superphosphate and thoroughly incorporated to give different mixtures to meet special plant requirements.

THE extent of losses, due to evaporation, sediment, and water, in crude oil stored in steel tanks, is a very interesting question, and particularly so at this time, when every reasonable measure should be employed to eliminate all possible losses of this important natural product. Available information on this subject is incomplete; e.g., during the development of the Cushing Field, considerable surplus oil was stored in steel tanks, but from time to time, owing to changes in weather, somelosses by evaporation and short storage room on the leases, these tanks were topped out, thus rendering inaccurate any system designed to determine the average rate of evaporation or other losses of the oil over a given period. , Furthermore, the losses, as shown by the records at the time, as a result of hasty gages, failed to take into account the temperature and gravity of the oil. Losses may be classified roughly as occurring from evaporation, presence of sediment and water, and leakage. The coefficient of expansion and contraction of crude oil, in relation to temperature conditions, is of material importance; also, the rate of evaporation is dependent upon the gravity of the oil, as the escape of the lighter hydrocarbons in fresh Cushing oil, of from 40 to 42 gravity, on a warm day is considerable, and from available records of temporary storage, it is safe to assume that a loss of 1 to 13 per cent. in volume will easily occur in light crude oil of Cushing grade over a period of. 6 months, including the summer season. The presence of sediment, water, and other impurities, in the oil will also cause, more or less deterioration in quality, particularly when the fresh production is run direct from the. gage tanks, or from the wells on the lease to steel storage, as is often the case when an oil field is being rapidly developed. The bad oil will settle to the bottom of the tanks and may be determined by thiefing and running a centrifuge test on the sample. The amount of water in the oil depends entirely on the conditions under which it is produced. Sometimes in large producing wells, with heavy gas pressure, some water may come in with the oil, particularly if the well has been drilled to the top of a water sand. Under these conditions, cut oil is often produced, which, if not settled out, is carried over into the steel tanks.

A process for recovery of energy from waste coal fines was investigated. The process, which was developed through laboratory, bench, and pilot plant scale experiments, consists of mechanical cleaning followed by high temperature oil agglomeration and pelletization. The process can produce a quality product under an economically and environmentally acceptable condition. Waste coal fines with ash less than 35: and HHV greater than 6,000 BTU/1b have been upgraded to a product with less than 15% ash and HHV Greater than 11,500 BTU/lb. A computer model has been developed to optimize the processing costs and to perform economic evaluation of specific sites. Ultimately tine model can be utilized to establish a priority listing for a region in assisting the determination of reclamation strategy.

With both unit costs per meter and average depth of drilling constantly increasing, there is a strong incentive to maximize the information acquired from drill holes, and then to make this information accessible to the geological staff. The larger the drilling project, the more advantageous computerization of data is over manual methods. The conversion to computer-readable form and the verification of large amounts of drill-hole data can be a substantial data processing task, but once accomplished, the benefits in increased accuracy and speed of interpretation will compensate for the time and effort spent in the work. For an exploration project progressing towards a preliminary feasibility study, about half of both the time and costs for all computer work of the entire feasibility study are devoted to drill-hole data base organization, and maintenance. Once drill-hole results are quantified and verified to be correct, they are immediately accessible and are not subject to further transcription or reinterpretation of errors. To obtain maximum benefits from computer utilization in this area, the drill-hole data base should be set up along with availability of the first data. For some companies, this may initially comprise a large number of purely speculative drill holes on a spacing of perhaps 1 or 2 km. Although few of these drill holes may encounter economic material, thought should be given, at this time, to the variables which will be logged when such material is found. In this way, it should be possible to set up a consistent format into which all future drill-hole information will readily be accommodated. This format may even be carried over into the data base requirements for an operating property.

Technological advances in underground coal mining have led to a reduction in fatalities. This study demonstrated that the percentage of cumulative injuries remained largely unchanged across two decades of technological advances (1983-1984: 37%; 2003-2004: 33%). Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the average number of lost days due to cumulative injuries has increased (36±55 days and 62±82 days, respectively) which may have been due to the increased age of the work force or an increase in length of employment meaning that the mine workers injured in 2003-2004 had been exposed to ergonomic risk factors longer than those in 1983-1984. It is recommended that ergonomics processes be implemented as a means to systematically identify, prioritize, and resolve the root causes of these cumulative injuries.

The Sugarloaf RARE II area (No. 5296) covers 11,100 acres in the northern part of the White Mountain Range, in the Inyo fictional Forrest. It is in Nevada, about 45 mi north of Bishop, California. A mineral survey was conducted by On U.S. burro of Mines in 1982 and by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1980-1982. The Bureau reviewed pertinent literature, searched Esmeralda and Mineral County mining records, obtained current claim information from the administrative agencies, and contacted claim owners. Thirty-six properties were examined, and 674 samples were taken from them to help assess win oral resources and potential. The Geological Survey evaluated the regional mineral potential by geologic, geochemical, and Geophysical surveys.

Located at the southern end of the Awhitu Peninsula, the Waikato North Head ironsand mine is approximately 50 km southwest of Auckland . The ironsand deposit consists of Quaternary sands, clays and peats, formed by aeolian and marine processes. We sampled on widely- and closely-spaced intervals to test variability within the mining area. X-Ray powder diffraction shows that samples contain feldspars, quartz, pyroxenes, amphiboles, clays and titanomagnetite. Densities range from 1.6 to 2.5 grams/cubic centimetre, with porosities from 30 to 43 percent. The percentage of magnetic minerals values range from 0 to 75 percent, slimes (clay minerals) values of 0 to 26 percent and non-magnetic minerals from 20 to 95 percent. Mineralogical differences in the Mitiwai Formation and Waiuku Blacksand Member cause bimodal populations in the density, magnetic minerals, nonmagnetic minerals and slimes plots. The Mitiwai Formation has higher non-magnetic mineral values and lower density, slimes and magnetic mineral values than the Waiuku Blacksand Member.

The residues from mining and processing ores can often be considered as secondary raw materials. However, the material is only available in the form of fine particles (< 3 mm). In order to recycle these wastes, it is necessary to agglomerate it for transportation prior to reprocessing. The resulting agglomerates need to mechanically resist the stress of transportation and loading into the furnace. X-ray computed tomography (CT) is an established method for characterisation of internal structures in material science. This non-destructive technique can provide information on size and distribution of particles and grains. However, the information is not limited to the size, but also can yield structural features like orientation and position of cracks and fractures, which are important features indicating potential for deteriorating the agglomerates. Furthermore, deduced features such as contact conditions of inclusions or boundary surfaces can also be calculated. We studied binder-free tablets of manganese-oxyhydroxide, bentonite, kaolinite and slag powder using micro-CT. Inclusions of highly absorbing particles were identified using a watershed transformation with automatic segmentation by Otsu thresholding. Subsequently, the resulting data was analysed regarding their volume percentage, distribution in size and location within the sample. For the slag agglomerates, the volume fraction of iron could be determined. Furthermore, visible cracks were investigated with the goal to determine the long-term durability. It was shown that the data provided by micro-CT is reliable and helpful for the characterisation of industrial waste agglomerates. Perception has the unfortunate habit of becoming reality. Urban inhabitants unfortunately do not regard mining as a legitimate or desirable business, despite its contribution to Australia&apos;s export income (+A $8,000 million, being nearly a third of all exports); share of GDP (it is 4.5%); and the fact that its presence fills up all the empty spaces northwest of the Adelaide-Melbourne-Sydney-Brisbane crescent of inhabitation. The huge economic contribution of Australia&apos;s minerals industry, resulting from providing more than half of merchandise exports (Figure 1), is achieved by employing only some 2% of the national work force (Gaulton, 1997). Unfortunately, the minerals industry&apos;s critics generally oppose exploration on the basis that what you don&apos;t know will not hurt you. It is the &apos;do-not-confuse-me-with-facts&apos; philosophy or &apos;ostrich syndrome&apos;, which somehow crudely assumes that mining practices have stayed in the style popular circa late 1800s. Somehow ignorance really is bliss for these idealistic believers, who are reminiscent of the members of the Flat Earth Society!

Collins Radio Company, through this contract with the Bureau of Mines, has conducted a System Study of Coal Mine Communi¬cations. The program was a three phase program to establish a data base, perform communication system analysis and optimi¬zation, and prepare equipment specifications to be included in this final report. At the start of establishing a data base both a knowledge of mine communication and coal mines in general was obtained. Communication system requirements and constraints were determined along with a survey of current and potential mine communication equipment. An investigation was completed concerning theoretical LF and VLF propagation characteristics, and UHF propagation tests were conducted in a working coal mine. Different mines were contacted and on-site surveys completed with respect to coal mine communication requirements.

Abstract - Cobalt, Ontario, is renowned for the 12.6 billion grams (445 million ounces) of silver produced from the area since discovery in 1903 by workers of the Timiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway. Native silver generally occurs with cobalt arsenides and sulfosalts in near-vertical carbonate veins cutting the Huronian sedimentary rocks of the Gowganda Formation, the Archean metavolcanics and/or the Nipissing diabase. All major deposits have been found within a few hundred meters of the unconformity between the Archean and Huronian rocks in general proximity to the Nipissing diabase and volcanogenic sulfide mounds within the Archean meta-volcanics. Silver has been mobilized from one or more of the local country rocks by hyper-saline brines and deposited in or near zones of mixing where the saline brines encounter paleometeoric water transported to depth along the unconformity or local structures. Previous work has shown that chloride complexes are the dominant ligands responsible for silver transport. These hypersaline brines, represented as halite-bearing fluid inclusions at room temperature, have been trapped as primary fluid inclusions within vein minerals. Pressure-temperature conditions of vein formation have been derived from mineral equilibria, maximum lithostat and fluid-inclusion studies. These data are consistent with vein formation occurring over the temperature range 300°C to 350°C, with pressures constrained between 60 Mpa and 136 Mpa (600 bars and 1360 bars).

The distribution of chrome spinels in a magnetically fractionated ilmenite concentrate sourced from the Murray Basin was characterized by XRF assaying, quantitative electron microprobeanalysis, grain mapping, automated mineral phase clustering, and modal analysis. At least 14 distinct chrome spinel types were present in the concentrate. There is considerable variation in the amount of each chrome spinel type present, although a high-Mg, high-Al phase makes up close to 45 per cent of the total spinel population. Magnetic fractionation results showed significant variation in the composition and relative abundance of spinels reporting to each fraction. Low magnetic field strength fractions (ie. high susceptibility grains) were dominated by chrome spinels that are mid-range in Al and Cr. These spinels have the highest magnetite, ulvospinel and Fe(Al,Cr)2O4components. In comparison, the high field strength fractions (i.e. low susceptibility grains) have the majority of the grains with high-Al contents indicating a higher proportion of Mg(Al,Cr)2O4component. Spinels high in a (Al,Cr)2.67O4non-stoichiometriccomponent are absent at low field strengths but tend to be concentrated in the high field strength, non-magnetic fractions. Intermediate field strength fractions tend to exhibit a broad spread in spinel compositional types. A mild roast treatment of the sample had no clear effect on the distribution of chrome spinels between different magnetic fractions, but it did cause a change in the magnetic properties of the accompanying ilmenite grains. The effect of more extreme roasting conditions on the magnetic properties of the chrome spinels is to be determined.
