This Bureau of Mines laboratory research demonstrated that building bricks meeting ASTM specification C62-66 for grades SW and MW of FBS-type bricks can be produced from waste copper mill tailings. Waste tailings from accumulations at Magna, Utah, Anaconda, Mont., and Hayden, Miami, and San Manuel, Ariz., were dry-pressed into bricks, and the products were tested in accordance with ASTM Designation C67-66 on sampling, and testing of brick. An evaluation derived from pilot-plant production of similar brick at the Coal Research Bureau of West Virginia University indicated the production cost to be about $34 per 1,000 bricks. Utilization of such mill tailings on a commercial scale would eliminate the need for digging new pits for brick raw material production, conserve natural resources, and simultaneously remove potential sources of air pollution.

Ventiflex is a flexible ventilation duct system with a global market within mine and tunnel ventilation. The system is distributed in a wide range of qualities and dimensions. It is very important that ventilation systems are designed correctly in mines and tunnels. An incorrectly dimensioned system might result in bad air quality and too high costs. The objective of this study has been to assess some important design parameters for ventiflex comprising the friction loss factor for the duct wall itself, as well as the shock loss factors and the leakage factors for the different couplings systems. This has been obtained by carrying out a large scale experimental program on ducts with all the three different couplings: Velcro, zip and steel-ring. Pressure profiles and air flow rates have been measured, and based on these data the different factors have been calculated. The following results have been obtained: A friction factor l = 0,012 (K = 10) for the duct wall, a shock loss factor z = 0,0125 for velcro- and zip couplings, a shock loss factor z = 0,005 for steel-ring couplings, and a leakage factor f* = 0 mm2/m2 for all three coupling types. The latter result proves that no leakage is possible for a correctly installed duct with proper alignment. The results also confirm that ventiflex complies with class S, or better, according to the SIA-norm. However, whether ventiflex should be designed as class S, A or B according to the SIA-norm, depends on the particular application.

The steady demand for rock materials leads not only to on increase in mining but to the need for decreasing the loss of material in the process of exploitation as well. It brings about an increase in using of explosives in open pits and as a result an increase of after blasting gases volume, vibrations, the scattering (dispersion) of stone ect. All these factors affecting the environment lead to the research work for applying the electrohydrodynamic methods both in open casts and underground mines. In the article the authors describe the concept of this method and construction of equipment which recently have been successfully introduced in mining, the results obtained determine the possibilities of using this method and the future directions. The results of combined method with high-pressure water jets cutting and prototype equipment for separating rock blocks from the rock mass using special head with high-pressure water jets are also described.

During the course of an investigation by the Bureau of Mines into the causes, behavior, end control of anthracite-line fires, it was observed that the carbon monoxide disappeared from a scaled fire area much more rapidly than could be explained oil the basis of leakage of gases. Two suggestions were offered for this high rate of disappearance; (1) That the carbon monoxide was oxidized at temperatures below 150° C, by either the anthracite or its ash (tests on many anthracites have shown that at temperatures above 150° C carbon monoxide is liberated in the oxidation products when air is passed through it); (2) that the carbon monoxide was oxidized by micro-organisms present in the sealed area.

This study was undertaken to generate a locally relevant guideline for the socio-economic aspects of mine closure for South African closure practitioners and decision makers. It should also represent a resource for interested and involved stakeholders. Mine closure, and its related post-closure social, environmental and economic characteristics, is part of the lifecycle of mining operations, given the finite nature of the ore resource. Many coal mines are anticipated to close in the next ten to fifteen years in Mpumalanga, as the epicentre of the industry shifts towards the Waterberg. Social aspects of mine closure have been historically underplayed, and under researched. Coaltech thus commissioned two studies, the first of which examined the closure dynamics of 36 mines in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal in 2006. A follow-up study (July 2007) focusing on Mpumalanga3,4 confirmed some of the results of the first study. It also contained broad guidelines for mine closure covering social and labour planning, job creation, the use of mine infrastructure, developmental incentives, and environmental rehabilitation.

Separation Technologies, LLC (ST) has developed a processing system based on triboelectric charging and electrostatic separation that provides the mineral processing industry a means to beneficiate fine materials with an entirely dry technology. The environmentally friendly process can eliminate wet processing and required drying of the final material. The process requires little if any pre-treatment of the material other than grinding and operates at high capacity ? up to 45 tonnes per hour by a compact machine. Energy consumption is low, approximately 1 kWh/tonnes of material processed. Since the only potential emission of the process is dust, permitting is typically relatively easy. In contrast to the other available electrostatic separation processes that are typically limited to particles greater than 75 µm in size, the ST belt separator is ideally suited for separation of very fine (<1 µm) to moderately coarse (500 µm) materials with very high throughputs. The triboelectric particle charging is effective for a wide range of materials and only requires particle ? particle contact. The small gap, high electric field, counter current flow, vigorous particle-particle agitation and self-cleaning action of the belt on the electrodes are the critical features of the ST separator. The high efficiency multi-stage separation through charging / recharging and internal recycle results in far superior separations and is effective on fine materials that cannot be separated at all by the conventional electrostatic techniques. Since 1995, this triboelectric process has been extensively used for the beneficiation of coal fly ash with eighteen separators in place and over 100 machine-years of operation at locations in the US and Europe. The technology has been also successfully applied to the beneficiation of a variety of minerals including calcium carbonates, talc, and potash.

The Golden Cross, low-sulfidation, epithermal deposit shows a number of features that are directly or indirectly related to boiling hydrothermal fluids. Occurrences of lattice calcite and their quartz pseudomorph equivalents in veins, and occurrences of adularia in veins and in the surrounding altered rocks in the vicinity of ore, are both direct evidence of deposition in the presence of boiling hydrothermal fluids. Loss of carbon dioxide causes calcite deposition (platy variety) near the level of first boiling, while adularia deposits due to the attendant pH increase along the cooling flow path. Indirect evidence of boiling include crustiform-colloform quartz banding, late massive calcite veins, clay-carbonate alteration in the shallow and peripheral parts of the ore zone, and the restricted vertical interval of precious metal mineralisation. The colloform quartz banding strongly resembles the banding in amorphous silica deposits found in geothermal surface pipes. This implies that fluids ascending the Empire Vein structure were saturated in amorphous silica. If so, then they must have undergone phase separation, which initiated at considerable depth (e.g. =1000 m) and very hot temperatures (e.g. =300¦C). On the basis of stable isotope data, late massive calcite veins appear to have deposited from CO2-rich steam-heated waters. Calcite deposited along heating paths as these waters descended into the upflow zone during late stage collapse of the hydrothermal plume. In active systems, such steam heated waters form by deep boiling. The high CO2 contents of these waters promote hydrolytic alteration and the formation of clay-carbonate alteration. Reaction path modelling using CHILLER and a deep, Broadlands-Ohaaki water as an analogue, shows that minerals deposit along boiling flow paths over discrete spatial intervals. Calcite and adularia deposit near the site of first boiling, followed by gold and then by amorphous silica. For deep boiling starting at 300¦C, these minerals deposit over a path length that exceeds 1000 m. The distribution of banded quartz and gold at Golden Cross are consistent with such a boiling model. However, the elevation of first boiling must have fluctuated over 500 m to account for the coincidence of lattice quartz (pseudomorphs of platy calcite) and adularia, crustiform-colloform silica and gold over distances of a few centimeters in veins. We deduce that a downward propagating boiling front and expansion of two-phase flashing in a flowing water column occurred during episodes of high vertical permeability and fluid flux in the Empire vein structure.

ABSTRACT: New techniques and methods for 3D geo-mechanical model test are presented in this paper. The new model material NIOS with high density and low cost; the so-called DPSS (Discrete Principal Stress Surface) loading concept, the loading and monitoring system for the generation of the 3D initial stress field of the model test, also the special techniques and apparatuses for modelling the excavation of caverns located deep inside the model material, are developed and introduced. By adopting those new techniques, a very large 3D geo-mechanical model test with high comparability for a newly designed underground powerhouse has been successfully fulfilled. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Neue Techniken und Methoden für 3D geomechanischen Modellversuch wurden in diesem Artikel vorgestellt. Ein neues Modellmaterial mit hocher Dichte und niedrigem Preis, ein sogenanntes DPSS (Discrete principal stress surface) Ladenkonzept, ein Laden- und Überwachungssystem für die Erzeugung des 3D primären Spannungsfelds und überdies spezielle Techniken und Maschinen für das Ausbruch der tief in dem Versuchsmodell liegenden Kaverne wurden entwickelt. Bei Anwendungen dieser neuen entwickelten Techniken wurde ein sehr großer 3D Modellversuch mit großem Maßstab für ein geplantes unterirdisches Kraftwerk erfolgreich durchgeführt. Analysis and example applications have been performed to compare the accuracy and computing speed of alternating-direction explicit and implicit procedures (ADEP and ADIP) in numerical solution of reservoir fluid flow problems. ADIP yields significantly greater accuracy and requires about 60 per cent more computing time than ADEP, not 300 or 500 per cent more as reported elsewhere. l,2 INTRODUCTION Several recent papers 1-3 discuss an alternating-direction explicit difference approximation (ADEP) to the diffusion equation. Example applications of ADEP and ADIP4 were reported to support conclusions that ADEP is comparable in accuracy to ADIP and requires one-fifth to one-third the computing time of ADIP. Applications of ADEP in calculation of two-phase flow in reservoirs was also proposed. 3 This study was performed to compare further the relative merits of ADEP and ADIP in simulation of two-dimensional flow of one and two fluid phases in reservoirs. Since two-phase flow equations are often essentially elliptic rather than parabolic, the efficiency of ADEP in solving the elliptic equation was also examined.

Off-grade molybdenite concentrates, mainly derived from secondary sources as by-products of the processing of copper, uranium and tungsten ores, do not satisfy the purity requirements (percent MoS2) for the production of molybdenum bearing products. This investigation is a continuation of a successful effort to refine a low-grade molybdenite concentrate to prepare a high-grade MoS2 using a mixed acid (HF + HCl) leach procedure. Specifically, this investigation is concerned with an understanding of the separation chemistry underlying the removal of the oxide/silicate gangue and the base-metal sulfide associations present in the low-grade molybdenite by their selective dissolution in the two acids. Experiments were conducted on an off-grade concentrate containing 42.6% Mo. Results of the controlled dissolution tests indicate that both HCl and HF are suitable for the removal of the associated alumina and both work well for iron, nickel and copper. However, HF was found to be the most effective for dissolving silica/silicate and magnesia. An attempt was made to rank the leaching efficiencies of the acids used singly, sequentially or in a mixed mode. Scale-up (300 to 2,000 g) experiments were conducted to validate this approach. Excellent purification of the concentrate was possible by processing the off-grade concentrate with 10% HCl plus 15% HF at 363 K for 7.2 ks in open polypropylene reactors with internal stirring. These conditions leached practically all of the oxide and silicate gangue and 96% of the metallic impurities. Starting from the low-grade molybdenite concentrate (42.6% Mo; 71.1% MoS2) it was found feasible to obtain a refined product containing 97.8% MoS2, which is suitable for industrial use.

Although theoretical and conceptual knowledge regarding the impact of horizontal stress on underground coal mining excavations have existed since at least the mid-1900s, it wasn?t until the late 1970?s that the theory and practical understanding began to mesh. Since that time, particularly over the last 25 years of this Conference, increased empirical study, as well as advances in measurement technology, computer simulation, and bolt design, has significantly improved our understanding of horizontal stress impact, and provided coal mine operators with tools to reliably predict and manage it. This paper provides a retrospective review of some of the more important horizontal stress-related advancements made during the 25 years of Conference proceedings, particularly those for predicting and controlling horizontal stress impacts within underground coal mines. Relevant and significant CONSOL experiences and studies will be presented in context, with particular attention to horizontal stress considerations for longwall faces and gateroads. The significance of horizontal stress will also be placed in context with respect to local geology and structure, ground support measures, and mining configuration, method, and sequence.

The competitive adsorption of xanthates on sulphide minerals in a binary mineral system (pentlandite and pyrrhotite) was studied using the pseudo-in-situ technique of attenuated total-reflectance FTIR spectroscopy. The minerals were placed in the same collector solutions, either separated by a glass wall or in direct contact with each other before magnetic separation and separate analysis. The effect of mineral interaction on xanthate adsorption was clearly demonstrated spectroscopically for the first time. At low concentrations of xanthate, its adsorption on pentlandite was activated by physical contact with pyrrhotite; the effect may be attributed to the enhancement of electron transfer through electrical contact between the two minerals. The results emphasise the need for caution in extrapolating results obtained from single-mineral studies to flotation practice

Complete details are given of the drilling method by which two shafts were sunk at the new Beatm&apos;x mine of Staatsmijnen in the Netherlands. The nature of the rock strata in the Dutch mining district determined choice of the drilling rather than the freezing method. Data for each step and details of the equipment used are given in the illustrations. Staatsmijnen was founded in 1902 with government financial backing, but it is run as a private enterprise, on a commercial basis, with the normal fiscal obligations. The company now has four mines in operation with annual outputs amounting to 7 1/2 million tons of coal. In 1952 it was determined that a new mine—the Beatrix—would be opened. Details of the shaft-sinking operation are described in this paper. SHAFT LOCATION The coal-bearing carboniferous rock in the Dutch mining district is overlain almost completely by soft water-bearing strata, which at the site of the new shafts are about 1600 ft thick. The sinking of the new shafts through this soft water-bearing overburden (Fig. 1) is a costly and time-consuming affair. From the two availaible sinking methods: 1) Poetsch&apos;s well known freezing method or 2) the drilling method of Honigmann-de Vooys, the latter was preferred, not only because of its relative cheapness, under the prevailing conditions, but primarily because by using the drilling process, a special type of shaft lining of steel, concrete, and bitumen could be used. The new shafts, located 330 ft apart, have an inner diameter of 18 ft, 4 1/2 in. The boreholes, which have a diameter of 25 ft and which were drilled through nearly 1600 ft of overburden and some 100 ft of carboniferous, each contain more than 29,000 cu yd—by far the largest in the world. DRILLING METHOD The drilling method is based on the use of mud-flush—a thin mixture of clay and water—to keep the borehole filled during the entire drilling period and during insertion of the lining (Fig. 2). INFACON conjures up many things for many people. For the fortunate few who have been actively involved with this event since its inception, it brings back memories of far places, stimulating debates and above all, the people who have over the years contributed to the outstanding success of the Congress and who have added to the wealth of knowledge on all aspects of ferroalloys. The International Ferroalloy Congress (INFACON) has been held every three years since 1974. INFACON X will be held in Cape Town in February 2004. Simple arithmetic shows that next year?s Congress should in fact be INFACON XI. Thus, one Congress was skipped. INFACON 74, as the name implies, was held in 1974, in Johannesburg, South Africa. The event was sponsored by the Ferro Alloy Producers? Association of South Africa (FAPA), the National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM - Mintek as it is known today) and the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM). You will see some of the same sponsors involved in INFACON X. Dr. Robbie Robinson, renowned academic and past president of the SAIMM, was the Chairman of the Organising Committee. The editor was Dr. Helen Glen. Anyone fortunate enough to possess a copy of the proceedings of this first Congress will agree that from a literary and technical perspective, it is still the benchmark for subsequent events. A unique feature of INFACON 74 was the use of rapporteurs (my first duty) to ensure that the discussions following the presentations were recorded (in direct speech) as accurately as possible. This involved time-consuming correspondence (can you imagine life before e-mail?) to all parts of the world between the author and the person posing the question, with the rapporteurs acting as go-betweens. It is understandable that the much-awaited proceedings only saw the light in 1975. The names recorded in the proceedings as the members of all six committees read like the who?s-who of the South African ferroalloy industry at the time: Dr. Peter Jochens, Mr. Harvey Reid, Mr. Piet Streicher, Prof David Howat, Mr. Sigurd Selmer-Olsen - to name but a few. The Congress was held in the new, very fashionable and upmarket Carlton Hotel in the CBD. In the Foreword of the proceedings, Dr. Robinson provides an insight into the event. Three hundred and thirty six delegates from twenty two countries attended the Congress, which was opened by the Honourable P.G.J. Koornhof, Minister of Mines. Again, the opening address makes fascinating reading. During the Congress an ad hoc committee was convened as the first International Committee on the Organisation of Ferroalloys Congresses, with representation from the main ferroalloy associations of the world. The following decisions were recorded: ? The Congress would be continued at three-yearly intervals under the name of INFACON ? Every third Congress would be held in South Africa ? NIM (Mintek) would provide the permanent secretariat. Six technical sessions were held, each preceded by a plenary address with a closing address by the session chairman. In all, thirty technical papers were presented. Prior to the closing address, a panel discussion on factors affecting the future of the ferrochromium industry provided stimulating debate in the form of a question-and-answer session. The hosting country for the next INFACON would be announced. Eventually, word got round that the next INFACON would be held in Japan. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the event was cancelled ? thus no INFACON 77. INFACON 80 was subsequently held in Lausanne, Switzerland from 12th to 16th October 1980. The event was organised by IFPEO, Institut des Producteurs de Ferro-Alliages d?Europe Occidentale. The Congress was officially opened by the President of IPFEO, Mr. R. Björklund, who was also President of the Organising Committee. The technical sessions were held in the Palais de Beaulieu. The Congress was well attended by 400 participants from 28 countries as well as 100 accompanying ladies. A total of four plenary addresses and 18 technical papers were presented. As with the first event, an international panel discussion (questions and answers) preceded the closing address. In his closing address, Dr. Louw Alberts, Chairman of the International Committee on Ferroalloys and President of NIM, presented an insight into the factors affecting growth in the industry and where growth was likely to take place. Twelve exhibitors had stands at the Congress. Attendees could choose from four post-event tours to Belguim/France (SADACEM/Compagnie Universelle d?Acetylene et d?Electro-Metallurgie), France (CUAEM), Finland (Outokumpu Oy) and Norway (Elkem Fiskaa plant).

"The monoalkyl ethers of polyethylene glycols are universal flotation reagents because they can be used as collectors, frothers, surfactants, and depressants. Their collecting power was demonstrated for different minerals including coal and quartz.It was confirmed in this work that monoalkyl ethers of polyethylene glycols could be used as collector in flotation of quartz in a monobubble Hallimond cell. Since feldspar does not float in the same cell, it was also shown that selective separation of quartz and feldspar in the Hallimond tube is possible. However, a trail to use the monoalkyl ethers of polyethylene glycols compounds for separation of quartz and feldspar by flotation of mixture of these minerals in a Mechanobr laboratory flotation machine was futile, indicating that these reagents required special environment for flotation.Most probable parameter responsible for a decrease in quartz flotation in the flotation machine is the hydrodynamics of process, and different adsorption/desorption conditions. To prove this, another series of experiments was carried out to separate quartz and feldspar, in which a laboratory flotation column was utilized. The performance of the flotation column was in between that of in the Hallimond tube and flotation machine. These experiments confirmed that the hydrodynamics of flotation plays a vital role in flotation of quartz with monoalkyl ethers of polyethylene glycol compounds."

QIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM)’s heavy mineral sand deposit located near the Village of Fort Dauphin, Madagascar was recently drilled using Boart Longyear Company’s Mini-Sonic drill. Continuous sand core samples were obtained to a depth of up to 30 meters for analysis and compared with the existing drilling data. Results were used as part of a validation process of the resource estimate, based on approximately 1,500 exploration holes drilled to date.

Replacement of an existing movable bridge with a new low level fixed bridge would not accommodate potential future navigation traffic. In order to replace the existing bridge in a cost effective manner, while accommodating the potential future needs of the Port of Salem, a new bridge was proposed that would permit conversion to a vertical lift type movable bridge should a potential need for upstream navigation warrant such a project in the future. Drilled shafts were found to be the most desirable foundation type for the replacement of the Route 49 Bridge over Salem River. Their ability to resist scour, be constructed without cofferdams, adequately resist vessel collision forces, and accommodate conversion to a future vertical lift bridge allowed the project to meet both the needs of the New Jersey Department of Transportation and the Port of Salem.

"At flotation of sulfide-barite ores of one of deposits sulfide and barite concentrates are obtained. In sulfide cycle potassium xantogenate as a collector in consumption of 200 g/ton, methylisobutylcarbinol (MIBC) as a foaming agent in consumption of 30 g/ton and also liquid glass are used. In barite cycle tall oil as fatty acid collector in consumption up to 400 g/ton is used.Sulfide concentrate represents mainly gold- and silver-containing pyrite. The contents of gold makes not less than 10 g per ton, silver - not less than 278 g/t. Barite concentrate contains up to 86% of barite.Factory is working in water recirculation conditions. Owing to that in barite cycle fatty acid collector is used, technological water from tailing repository contains fatty acids soap up to 25 mg/l. Before submission into sulfide cycle this water is conditioned with active carbon to delete the main part of fatty acid collector. The active carbon consumption makes 0,4-0,5 kg per 1m3 of water or 1,5-2 kg per ton of ore. The above mentioned consumption of active carbon improves reducing of contents of fatty acid collector from the initial concentration of 25-30 mg/l to 4 mg/l. At concentration 4 mg/l fatty acid collector does not render negative influence on flotation index in sulfide cycle. At the absence of active carbon pollution of sulfide concentrate and its irrevocable lost are observed."

MESA Corporation has completed a four-year program for the Bureau of Mines to develop a technique for measuring roof competence in underground coal mines. The preferred technique employs a tracer gas that is injected into a roof borehole drilled near the working face. The tracer gas performs the dual purpose of determining the pressure loss rate from the borehole and of marking the diffusion pattern of the the escaping gas. The primary detection technique relies upon observation of the rate of pressure drop in a hole drilled in the roof strata under test. If this measurement indicates a significant probability of roof collapse, the gas diffusion pattern is outlined with the Leak-gun tracer-gas detector. These two techniques provide a comprehensive method for predicting the relative probability of roof collapse in operating coal mines.
