This paper deals with an occurrence of radium ore near Wilberforce, Haliburton county, Ontario, upon which development work has recently been undertaken and which seems more likely to prove of commercial grade than any other deposit' of radioactive minerals hitherto found in Canada. This occurrence is sometimes called the Richardson property, after Mr. W. M. Richardson, the discoverer, and will be so referred to in the present paper. Occurrences of radioactive minerals are not uncommon in eastern Canada, and a number are recorded in the literature. The earliest of such references is probably that in Geology of Canada, 1863, where is mentioned an occurrence of uraninite at Mamainse, on the east shore of lake Superior. The mineral was first described by J. L. Leconte, in 1847, under the name of coracite, and was said to occur in a two-inch vein at the contact of trap and syenite. Search for this locality in recent years has proved unsuccessful. Obalski, in 1894, mentions (1) the occurrence of uraninite at a mica mine near Murray Bay, Que. In 1903, Obalski records (2) tests made on this uraninite by Rutherford and the Curies and the determination in it of the then newly-discovered element radium. In 1901, he mentions (3) the occurrence of uraninite at the Villeneuve mica mine, on the Lievre river, and of samarskite at the Maisonneuve mica mine, in Berthier county.

Being a geologist I intend describing the renaissance of the gold industry in Australia within its geologic framework; there is a geological pattern to the numerous gold projects which have been brought on stream over the past decade. We are now about midway through our third and largest gold boom which, at a peak of 7.5 million ounces is about twice the production peaks achieved in the preceding booms. From discovery in 1851 through 1870 we saw the first boom largely based on alluvial production in NSW and in Victoria at the great Ballarat and Bendigo Goldfields. The discovery of the Golden Mile in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, underpinned the second gold boom in the period 1895 - 1915. On that basis the present boom should last through the next decade.   It has been a golden decade for Australian gold production. From less than ten mines in 1980 with production over 10 000 ounces and the largest, Telfer, with output of about 130 000 ounces we now find over 130 deposits being worked around the country today that produce over 10 000 ounces with the largest, Boddington, having an output of over 400 000 ounces. In total these mines produced an estimated 210 tonnes of gold in 1989 and we expect this year, 1990, that a new record production of between 240 and 250 tonnes will be set. This positions Australia in third place in the Western World behind South Africa #1 and the USA #2 and fourth in the world with the Russians holding second place overall behind the South Africans.

One of the lithium minerals most widespread in the earth's surface is spodumene (Li2O-A1203-4Si02) a lithium aluminium silicate. For some time, deposits of this mineral were known to exist in the Black Rills of South Dakota, but it was only quite recently that Hess4/ pointed out the great magnitude of the low-grade e deposits it s in North Carolina. The theoretical lithia (Li20) content of spodumene is 8.04 percent. The only other minerals with such high lithia content are the phosphates, but these occur only in pockets and are not in extensive deposits5/. Actually, however, the lithia content in spodumene is never found to be this high, being nearly always below 7 percent for the pure mineral, and part of the lithia is apparently replaced by other alkalies.

“Plutonic-related” gold deposits in Interior and SW Alaska (Tintina Gold Belt) vary significantly in size, grade, vein/deposit morphology, depth of emplacement, distance from causative pluton and metal association. Metal associations such as Au-Bi and Au-As-(Sb-Hg) are a good empirical indicator of depth of emplacement and distance from causative pluton and have been used successfully in exploration. Results from a variety of analytical techniques also suggest a phenomenological cause for these metal associations, e.g. gold and bismuth have linked metallogenesis at high temperatures and thus are best correlated at deposits that are deep and/or close to causative intrusions.

This paper presents recent advancements in the MillMapper software technology, developed and used for thickness gauging of liners of cylindrical grinding mills used for mineral comminution. MillMapper uses calibrated laser scanner data captured inside a mill to determine thickness at several million points on all liner surfaces with millimetre accuracy. The paper is structured as follows. First, a review of the technology and its numerous advantages over existing techniques and the value it adds to operations are presented. These are followed by discussion of recently-implemented innovations, including improved visualisation and inspection tools, automatic ball charge volume measurement and automatic mill liner volume/weight measurement. Results from its application at several sites in Australia are presented throughout.

A comparison is made between elementary block estimation techniques and the optimal methods of geostatistics using data from an Australian deposit. Considerable improvement in the estimates are obtained by using the optimal technique in this case.

Production planning techniques, particularly a production scheduling model are proposed for use in taconite mining in Minnesota. Applications of the scheduling model, on a two-year mine plan, which evaluates the equipment involved, are detailed. Data and tables are included. INTRODUCTION Fifty years ago Walter Swart, a mining engineer investigating the Minnesota taconites for the Jackling interests, made this report: "There is no doubt in my mind that this taconite mining is a game worth playing and that it can be played to a successful finish. It seems now only a question of men, money, methods and details."' The prosperous industry envisioned by Swart and other taconite pioneers is today a reality. Its growth has been spurred by technological advances in mining and beneficiation, depletion of natural ore reserves, and improvement of the economic climate. However, the massive problems that were solved to make this development possible are only a foreshadowing of the questions of "men, money, methods and details" that will be encountered in the future. The increasing demands for higher quality taconite pellets have already forced producers to examine better methods of quality control for their operations. THE NEED FOR PRODUCTION SCHEDULING The maintenance of fairly constant crude ore characteristics is of major importance to mill quality control. Through careful mixing of ore from storage bins, the concentrator staff can partially reduce the deviations of the feed analysis from the analysis desired. However, the limited effectiveness of bin mixing systems has caused some mining companies to utilize large capacity blending piles to reduce grade variations. Although the analysis of material being reclaimed from such a pile is relatively uniform, raw materials still must be scheduled from the mine into the pile in such a manner that the average analysis of all material is close to the feed analysis prescribed by the mill. PRODUCTION SCHEDULING MODEL Minnesota taconite mining companies have used three analyses to estimate how a certain ore will react to concentration. These factors are the crude magnetic iron content of the ore, the iron content of the plant concentrate produced from the ore at a standard grind, and the grindability index of the ore. The actual laboratory tests used to determine these factors have been described by Apuli.2 These data are obtained from analysis of diamond drill cores, and are the established criteria used by mine planning engineers to formulate taconite production schedules. Variations in the grade of mine output should be controlled by any production scheduling system. However, to be truly practical, production scheduling methods must also consider many of the less tangible variables that affect mine operation. These include pit layout, available equipment, and ownership of ore leases. The number and scope of the variables inherent in this type of mine planning suggested that a computer simulation could be used to solve the problem. The preparation of information for use with a computer simulation program was the initial phase of this project. Meaningful data was developed from logs of diamond drill cores. Analyses were related to their respective areas of influence by means of mine maps, Fig. 1. The three assay variables and tonnages for each area were punched on cards. In addition to these values, a location code number was punched in the first eight columns of the cards. This code is explained as follows: Column 1 Bench number Column 2 Quadrant location as determined by mine reference lines Columns 3-5 East-west coordinate Columns 6-8 North-south coordinate The heart of any simulation techniques is a well engineered mathematical model. To develop a model for taconite production scheduling, the relationship between the three assay variables had to be established. New technologies, such as computer based learning, wireless computing, internet2, online courses, distance learning, and in general multimedia applications are being implemented in the higher education sector in an increasing manner. However, these implementations are not coherent, and lack standards. However, one example of the existing standards is the development and implementation of the virtual learning environments. These technology tools help in delivering the eLearning objectives. There is a major initiative in Europe (eEurope action plan) in promoting eLearning towards creating a knowledge-based society. Technology implementation is the major driver for achieving the eLearning objectives. A two-year pilot project on implementing technology tools including virtual learning environment (VLE), video-conferencing, and simulation and visualization was carried out for providing a blended learning environment for undergraduate and graduate students in Mining Engineering (undergraduate) and Mineral Deposit Evaluation (M.Sc.) course at the Imperial College London. The pilot project was funded by the Imperial College Centre for Educational Development (ICCED). The project did contribute towards activities for creating an institute-wide eLearning strategy in line with the eEurope action plan.

An Automated People Mover (APM) transit system is planned for the growing Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The APM will improve passenger movements between the terminals, and provide a link to parking facilities, a new rental car facility, and the planned metro Light Rail. The underground works will include shallow twin bored tunnels, taxiway crossings, and underground stations constructed beneath critical airport facilities. Challenging soft ground conditions will require extensive underpinning and ground improvements. Design is underway, and construction is scheduled to begin in 2007 with project completion in 2015. The owner’s planned delivery method for the APM Project will be Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) with a Guaranteed Maximum Price.

From time to time lead, which is normally considered to be a soft ductile metal, fails by cracking. The cracks which form appear to be of two distinct types-(a) those which follow a zig-zag course around the boundaries of crystals and (b) those which follow a more direct path, frequently two systems of cracks appearing at right angles.The former appear definitely to be associated primarily with the properties of the crystal boundaries, whilst the latter appear rather to be determined by the system of stresses applied. In both cases the lead appears to be a brittle rather than a ductile metal, for the failure occurs without the large amount of deformation usually associated with the tensile breaking of lead. The latter is, however, a function of time and when lead is deformed by long applications of stress, the metal appears to- be less ductile than when the stress is applied suddenly. Thus, if a given test piece of commercial lead is broken by a stress of 1100 lb. per sq. in. in several hours, it may extend 40 to 50%before failing, whereas when broken by a stress of 500 lb. per sq. in. acting for 12 months or more it willshow an extension of only 15 to 25 %. With lower stresses still, failure would take much longer and undoubtedly lower extensions would be obtained.As the stress is lowered it is found that the marked local contraction characteristic of ductile metals becomes less noticeable, and failure, instead of being by extension of *Lecture delivered to the First 'Ordinary Meeting of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, 21st August, 1935.

The Kauri Block (Hauraki Hill) andMatawai Valley epithermal vein systems, near Coromandel township, are hosted by hydrothermally altered Miocene andesites and Mesozoic greywackes of the Coromandel VolcanicZone. The hydrological setting of both geothermal systems was probably that of an andesitic volcanic arc. Two types of veins are recognised: 1. Simple veins composed of fine comb quartz, and 2. Complex (breccia) veins composed of vein fragments of sulphide-bearing, chalcedonic silica cemented by saccharoidal and fine comb quartz.   Pyrite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, and gold form the ore minerals. Both deposits historically exploited hypogene and supergene bonanza gold.   At Hauraki Hill, breccia veins up to 7m wide contain abundant fragments of recrystallised colloform banded-crustiform textured quartz veins ('Golden Cross' style) and were probably major channels for ascending deep mineralising fluids. Alteration assemblages are zoned with the higher elevations of Hauraki Hill-Bunkers Hill characterised by strong kaolinite alteration whereas deeper levels are dominated by illitic clays.   At Matawai, complex veins and hydrothermal breccias pinch and swell, and inflect, within a total width of veining and alteration that exceeds 50 m. The greywacke host rocks are altered to an assemblage of illitesmectite, quartz, chlorite and pyrite although there are pockets of kaolinite.   The proposed genesis of veins and ores in both deposits invokes episodic rapid mixing (quenching) of hot mineralising reservoir fluids with cool acid condensate waters, whilst acidification and increased fO2 triggered gold deposition. These hydrothermal systems heated up during their later stages and at Matawai visible gold was deposited from a late mesothermal stage. The main conclusion is that the northwest CVZ has excellent potential for large gold deposits (= 30 tonnes contained gold).

The exhaust system is a complex assembly of various components performing important tasks in harsh environments. Carbon steels have been used extensively in exhaust systems, but pressure for lower cost, increased fuel efficiency; lower hazardous emissions, weight savings and increased life expectancy have shifted the emphasis to stainless steels. In response to the growing consumption of stainless steels in automotive exhaust systems, the need to properly evaluate their corrosion resistance properties in order to ensure their appropriate use, has increased substantially. This paper evaluated the most common corrosion and oxidation tests developed that are used and applied it to four common stainless steels often employed in hot end exhaust components. In a summary considering the weight loss of an alloy, it general corrosion rate and pitting resistance under all the test conditions for hot end exhaust components, results indicate that 434 was by far the most corrosion resistant alloy, followed by 1.4509 and 321, and lastly 304 was the least corrosion resistant. In general, the ferritic stainless steels, especially 434, outperformed the austenitic ones under all the test conditions.

Electric-pulse disintegration is a mineral separation technique that liberates all mineral grains from any igneous or metamorphic rock irrespective of its lithology or grain-size distribution. The normal mechanical crushing of whole-rock samples is replaced by the rending effect of an explosion, produced by applying an electric current from a high-voltage power source. A voltage greater than the 100 kV necessary for the electrical breakdown of rock samples is achieved by using capacitors charged in parallel, but discharged in series. The sample sits in a water bath and the rapid distribution of electric pulses leads to an explosion which occurs preferentially along grain boundaries of the sample. Individual, undamaged mineral grains can be recovered in their original shape and form regardless of grain size. Examples are given of the liberation and concentration of important accessory minerals from different rock types. The examples show the recovery of diamond from two types of non-kimberlitic host rock in Popigai and Kumdykol in Kazakhstan and platinum group minerals associated with chromitites from the Konjdor intrusion and sulphides from intrusions in the Kola Peninsula in Russia
