A well-defined geometric model for a mineral system and its liberation by size reduction is used to show the relationship between true volumetric particle composition and the composition estimates obtained by the measurement of linear intercepts or areas of simulated polished sections of particles. Based on this information, a transformation is developed between the areal measurements and the volumetric composition for this idealized mineral system. THE different lines leading out from the vocation of a mining engineer are,' perhaps, the most' varied of all the professions. The expedition sent by Charles R. Crane of New York 'as a gift to the Imam Yahia, king of the Yemen, Arabia, was probably unique. Mr. Crane made a visit, in January,1927, to the Imam Yahia at Sanaa, capital of the Yemen. He was received with the utmost cordiality and respect, as his friend- . ship for the ,Arab world is famous; He was 'greatly impressed by the desire of the Imam to develop his country. The Imam stated that he had heard that there were minerals in his country and that he would like to secure engineers to advise him about them and other natural resources.. This seemed such a practical idea, and so greatly appealed to Mr. crane, that he offered to furnish an engineering 'expedition. Naturally the Imam gratefully accepted. This expedition was to study (as far as possible in 'the limited time) the natural resources of the ,Yemen, advise the Imam of what these consisted, and make suggestions regarding the most practical methods for their development. As agriculture is always such a fundamental part of a country's wealth, I first went to Indio, California, to study water-well drilling and the date industry, and eventually arrived at Hodeidah, the principal Yemen seaport, on Oct. 21, 1927.

This paper presents the application of a simple genetic algorithm (SGA) to a coal slurry grinding process in order to find the optimum set of conditions under which the desired slurry properties can be attained. The operating parameters of the process were; slurry % solids, dispersant dosage, ball size, and mill speed. The optimization algorithm, which is based upon the mechanics of natural genetics, was used to find near-global optimum points specific to responses measured In terms of fineness, specific energy consumption, viscosity coefficient, and viscosity exponent. In order to minimize the viscosity of the slurry and simultaneously achieve a condition of maximum packing density, optimization was carried out by the penalty method using an overall objective function incorporating several responses. Computer results and analysis demonstrate the ability of the genetic algorithm to perform better than a traditional technique such as response surface methodology (RSM) and to rapidly locate "the global optimum".

The energy demand in India is expected to show increasing growth in the next few decades. The oil companies in India are revamping the existing oil refineries as well as constructing new refineries across the country to meet the energy demands. Most of the refineries in India are located along the coastal region because of the ease of transporting crude materials. Considering the criticality of the structures as well as soil conditions in the coastal region, pile foundations are used in refinery plants. In India, non-displacement piles in the form of bored cast-in-situ piles are used to support structures. In a few circumstances, displacement piles in the form of driven cast-in-situ piles are also being used to support critical structures. This study presents the performance of non-displacement and displacement piles for similar ground conditions at the same project location. The pile load test results have shown that the settlement observed for displacement piles is lower than compared to non- displacement piles for a given loading and soil conditions. This shows that the performance of displacement piles is slightly better in comparison with that of non-displacement piles.

El presente texto señala la exploración, geología y desarrollo del yacimiento minero Toquepala, ubicado en Tacna. Este constituye un yacimiento porfirítico de cobre-molibdeno diseminado donde la mineralización está subordinada a una chimenea de brecha y a un intrusivo de dacita, ambos genéticamente relacionados a la actividad intrusiva hidrotermal calco-alcalina datada de fines del Cretáceo superior-Terciario inferior. En 1937, se inician los trabajos de prospección y exploración desarrollados en Toquepala, cuando la Compañía Cerro de Pasco ordenó una evaluación geológica, con cartografía regional, perforación diamantina y muestreo. Posteriormente se inicia la segunda etapa con estudios regionales de geología, aerofotografía, ingeniería, excavación de galerías y chimeneas exploratorias y la instalación de una planta piloto de tratamiento de minerales de cobre. Finalmente, desde 1955 a la fecha se ha desarrollado la exploración orientada a mantener las operaciones de producción de minado y expansiones planeadas de la minería.

"This paper presents the results of 1g model tests conducted on model piles both single and two pile groups embedded in sand by physically inducing lateral soil movement. From the test results it was found that the pile with higher L/D ratio exhibits higher deflection in case of pile embedded in medium dense sand whereas in loose sand the response is vice versa with higher deflection for the pile of lesser L/D ratio. The induced bending moment in piles is more for longer piles than shorter piles irrespective of the density of sand bed. It is also found that the pile head deflection and the bending moment are found to decrease exponentially with increasing distance between the pile and the wall. For pile group arranged in a row parallel and perpendicular to retaining wall, the deflection of single pile is more than the deflection of two pile group irrespective of the depth of excavation for spacing of piles tested. The influence of soil movement on the lateral response of pile is also analyzed through 3-dimensional finite element analysis. The numerical results thus obtained are validated with the results of experiments. The Mohr-Coulomb material model adopted to represent the soil behaviour predicts the response of pile reasonably and compares well with the experimentally observed response.INTRODUCTIONPile foundations are adopted to support structures such as foundations of high rise buildings, transmission towers, offshore platforms, bridge abutments etc., when good bearing stratum is not present at shallow depth to bear the loads of these structures. In the recent past particularly in the urbanized areas structures are built close to one another and nearby excavation will cause a reduction of lateral earth pressure and soil movement behind the retaining wall (Ong, 2004). The reduction in support stress will induce additional movement to the pile and leading to distress in pile foundations located adjacent to supported excavation. In these situations understanding the response of piles next to supported excavations becomes essential.The behavior of piles subjected to soil movement was studied by Poulos and Chen (1996 and1997) through tests on 1g models and the findings concluded that the maximum bending moment was found to decrease with decreasing pile diameter and decreasing pile spacing . Leung et al. (2000 and 2003) studied the effects of excavation induced soil movement on pile foundations in sand through centrifuge tests and established that the restraints on the pile head would cause additional shear force and/or bending moment at the pile head, although the restraints help to reduce the pile head deflection/rotation. In the theoretical studies of Poulos & Chen (1997), boundary element method (PALLAS) was used for analysing the pile subjected to lateral soil movement and charts were proposed for designing the piles. Pan et al. (2002) and Miao et al. (2006) analysed the passive pile behavior through three dimensional finite element analyses. However research works reported on piles subjected to lateral soil movement are limited."

Safety management is an important mortal and business function in construction. Contractors have traditionally tracked and reported lagging indicators, e.g. fatalities and lost-time accident rates, to measure their safety performance and stay in compliance with relevant regulations. Over the last several decades, contractors became more proactive in their approach to safety and developed programs that track leading indicators, e.g. safety audits and safety climate. In particular, safety climate measures workers? perception of safety management and its effectiveness in the workplace. Past literatures indicated that, while some industrial construction contractors ignore safety climate measures, others are limited by a lack of a formal means to measure safety climate. In this study, a survey approach is used to measure an industrial construction contractor?s safety climate through three key areas: management commitment, job control, and general safety climate. As a pilot study, a total of 214 individuals at a fabrication facility participated in the survey to verify the validity and effectiveness of the proposed survey approach. This survey study also confirms that job control and management commitment have a positive correlation and that worker demographics have an effect on respondents? perceptions of management commitment.

Plant samples collected from the mined sites of Beulah, Center and Zap and the test sites of North Beulah 1, North Beulah If, South Beulahh and Center were analyzed for their nutrient concentrations. The vegetation from the mined areas generally showed lower concentrations of Na, P and Cu and failed to meet the nutritional requirements for beef cattle as defined by National Research Council (minimum requirements are: Na, 600; Cu, 4; P, 1800 µg/g dry weight). Plants from Beulah showed generally higher concentrations than from Center or Tap. Tissue concentrations of K varied significantly between sites for 5 species due to the low tissue concentrations at Center. Deficiencies are difficult to isolate as the sampling was done in mid-summer and generally during that season the tissue concentrations tend to decrease in several species. All of the plant species at the unmined sites, with the exception of western wheatgrass at Zap, had lower concentrations of P than the minimum nutritional requirements for beef cattle. Sodium concentration was low but Cu was marginal to adequate in plant species at the unmined sites. Concentrations of K, Mn and Cu in western wheatgrass were greater at Center than at Zap while the opposite was true of the concentrations of Zn, Cu and P in blue grama and Cu in green needlegrass. Amending the spoil with slack at North Beulah I decreased the concentrations of Zn, Cu and P in wheatgrasses grown on spoil from 0-2, 5-10, and 20-25 foot depths, respectively. In general, the mean tissue K+/Na+ ratios were greater in plants on slack amended spoils, primarily due to the reduced Na concentrations in the tissue. At North Beulah II test site, only wheatgrasses grown on spoil amended with slack showed significant increase in K and decrease in Na and Mn concentrations. At South Beulah test site which received 12" topsoil over graded spoil, leonardite amendment decreased P concentrations in all of the grasses as compared to control, whereas fertilizer treatment increased the same. Nutrient concentrations were lower in both fescue and needlegrass with leonardite treatment and higher with fertilizer treatment although not significantly different from control. The concentrations of Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Cu and N in grasses grown on topsoil at Center test site were significantly higher than on slack amended spoil. Legumes grown on topsoil at Center site contained higher concentrations of P than those grown on spoil; there were no significant effects due to slack on spoil or topsoil. The data presented in this report act only as an indication of between-treatment and between-species differences in tissue composition of plants harvested in mid-summer season. With respect to the nutrients analyzed, since none were found to be toxic, the cattle can safely feed on the vegetation of these mined areas.

In this paper, we review cases in which dramatic and visual swelling problems are experienced in underground structures. Swelling rocks have caused many problems in underground engineering projects. They pose severe problems to the design, construction and maintenance of underground openings. If an appropriate integrated design procedure, which proceeds from exploration, tests, analyses and realistic assumptions of swelling behavior, is used during the design stage, the execution of the project can be completed without any serious delays or dramatic design changes. The case histories were subdivided into three classes that include tunnels, underground coal mines and others. For the evaluation of cases, the surrounding rocks, swelling minerals, water inflow, swelling test results and swelling problems were considered. The main purpose of this review is to inform the reader about potential problems with swelling phenomenon and to emphasize the rehabilitation and extensive cost which are encountered due to the lack of necessary integrated design approaches.

Metallurgists are making use of the stereographic projection to a steadily increasing extent. In the last five years no less than 20 papers in American metallurgical journals alone have employed the stereographic projection; recent books on physical metallurgy, plastic deformation, X-rays and their applications, and crystal structure use it. Mineralogists have used the stereographic projection for many years in the description of symmetry classes and crystal planes, for it presents an accurate, easily understood plot of any angular relations in crystals with all unessential features eliminated (such as the accidentally determined size and shape of crystal faces). In metallography and physical metallurgy the projection is much used for the analysis of markings appearing on polished grains: slip lines, twins, cracks, structures formed by precipitation, magnetic-powder patterns, etch pits, etc. Data from certain types of X-ray photograms are most conveniently analyzed by its use, particularly those for determining the orientation of single crystals or the preferred orientation of grains in an aggregate. Calculations of how to tilt or cut a crystal parallel to a certain crystallographic plane or to reflect X-rays from a certain plane are rapidly carried out. It has been adopted almost universally to the exclusion of other methods by those studying the deformation of metallic crystals, save where the accuracy required is greater than a few tenths of a degree. Any directional property in a crystal or polycrystalline material can be shown on a stereographic projection; for example, the modulus of elasticity, yield point, etc. It has been repeatedly called to our attention that there is need of an elementary explanation of the principles and methods of stereographic projection, covering all the common applications in the field of metallography and physical metallurgy. The following contribution is an attempt to fill this need. The description of each method is supplemented with references to publications in which the method has been used. A significant problem in ultrafine particle classification is the significant amount of submicron particle by-pass to the coarse particle stream. In classifying cyclones, submicron particle by-pass to the underflow stream can be reduced by decreasing water recovery. Past studies have shown that a reduction can be realized when the feed solids concentration is increased or the apex diameter is reduced. However, both adjustments tend to increase the particle size cut point and negatively affect classification efficiency due to the impact on slurry rheology. The addition of a viscosity modifier to the feed stream of a classifying cyclone improved the classification performance and decreased the particle size cut point over a range of feed solids concentrations. The detailed test program investigated the use of the modifier in conjunction with varying apex diameters to identify conditions that minimize ultrafine by-pass. With small apex sizes, roping conditions were readily eliminated by the addition of viscosity modifiers. The addition of the modifier had no deleterious effect on froth flotation performance, which commonly serves as a downstream separation process. The fundamental and practical benefits of viscosity modifiers in classification processes are discussed in this publication.

The 25th Peruvian Mining Convention (Convención de Ingeneieros de-Minas del Perú) was held Sept. 10-14, 2001, in Arequipa, Peru. The biennual meeting, sponsored by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (Instituto de Ingeneiros de Minas del Peru), is designed to showcase the Peruvian mining industry and to ?promote progress in the national mining sector.? The convention consisted of technical sessions, forums, field trips and social activities. The technical sessions featured 80 papers selected from more than 200 papers submitted. The well-organized 2001 meeting was held at the Tecsup Institute of Technology of Arequipa. The meeting was held in conjunction with Exposición Technologica Minera (Extemin), a mining trade exhibition. The2001 Extemin had representatives from more than 400 companies in attendance. In addition to the many Peruvian companies present, the trade exhibition featured pavilions representing the United States, Canada, Germany, Australia and Chile. Registration at the 2001 meeting was about 3,300, a conference record. The theme for the 2001 meeting was Mining: Society and Development. Mario Brescia was chairman of the organizing committee. He said in his opening remarks that ?this year?s meeting seeks to emphasize the commitment on the part of the [mining] companies to treat our natural resources responsibly, controlling any adverse impacts and giving priority to group benefits.? Consistent with this theme, many of the technical papers stressed environmental and social responsibility. Many successful examples of environ-mental and social responsibility on the part of the mining industry were presented in the technical sessions.

Seven mines with important production records in the Coeur d'Alene lie adjacent to the Gem stocks —the Frisco (Gem), Hercules, Interstate, Rex (Sixteen to One), Success (Granite), Sunset, and Tamarack. Old records are incomplete, but available data given in Table I show these mines have produced 10.550,721 tons of ore containing more than 50 million oz of silver, more than 1.5 billion lb of lead, and about 1 billion lb of zinc (approximately 1.25 million tons of lead and zinc combined). Average ore grade is 4.8 oz of silver per ton, 7.2 pct Pb, and 4.6 pct Zn. This impressive production represents about 12 pct of the District's yield. At present metal prices, with modern beneficiation, the gross value would be more than $400 million. THE GEM STOCKS The Gem stocks, considered to be outliers of the Idaho batholith of Late Cretaceous age, are located in the northern half of the Mullan quadrangle, and extend from the town of Gem, Idaho, along a strike of N30°E for a distance of approximately five miles. They occur as two major masses of monzonitic rocks commonly referred to as the North stock, which covers an area of 1.1 sq miles, and the South stock, which covers 2.6 sq miles. The areal pattern is roughly club-shaped, the North stock representing the handle and the South stock the head of the club. Two and a half miles west and five miles northeast are two groups of smaller stocks, isolated from the main masses but of the same general rock type. This discussion is limited for the most part to the North and South stocks. At the north end, where the intrusion is about 3200 ft wide, the walls are about parallel and dip very steeply west. At the south end, where the mass is about 7000 ft wide at surface, the walls dip away from each other at moderately steep angles. An aeromagnetic survey' detects and outlines with surprising accuracy the two main stocks. as illustrated on the magnetic contour map (Fig. 2). Of particular interest is the location and shape of the magnetic anomaly representing the South stock. The anomaly is centered over the south end of the outcrop, and a westerly extension joins it with a smaller anomaly over the Dago Peak stocks. The latter anomaly, likewise, is located over the south end of the isolated stocks. This pattern suggests the intrusion has greater extent at depth to the south and west. Though correlation between the Dago Peak stocks and the larger masses is suggested, the controversial aspects of the Dobson Pass fault, which separates the two areas, casts doubt on a correlation. Topographically the monzonite stocks are ignored by the drainage pattern indicating these rocks, and the invaded rocks of the Lower Belt Series react similarly to erosion. The drainage patterns of Nine Mile and Canyon creeks cut indiscriminately across the monzonite-Belt contact, resulting in both valleys and ridges in the southern end of the intrusion. Nine Mile Creek traverses diagonally the entire five-mile length of the stocks. The monzonite rocks of the intrusion are referred to locally as granite, but granite is rare and the rocks comprise a wide variety of types. Their characteristics, described in detail by F. L. Ransome and F. C. Calkins,' are summarized by P. J. Shenon.' The principal rock type is coarse-grained, light gray, porphoritic monzonite containing black crystals of hornblende. In Indiana, 349 wells were drilled for oil and gas in the year 1942. Of this number, 125 oil wells and 21 gas wells were successfully completed and 203 were dry holes. Drilling activity declined 37 per cent as compared with that of the year 1941. This reduction was brought about largely by Federal Conservation Order M-68, restricting drilling to one well on 40 acres, in order to save steel. This Order was later supplemented to permit closer spacing of wells drilled to sandstone formations in southwestern Indiana. Most of the drilling in 1942 was in the southwestern part of the state. Posey County ranked first, with 94 completions and 44 producers; Gibson County, second, with 77 completions and 38 producing oil wells and 2 gas wells. There were 58 drilling operations in the state at the end of the year. During 1942 a total of 589,734 ft. of hole was drilled, of which 231,702 ft. was wildcat footage. The total initial production of the oil wells completed was 9974 bbl. and of the gas wells, 11,148,000 cu. ft. (Table 2). Of the 349 wells completed, 122 were wildcat wells (Table 3); 26 were completed as oil wells; 17 were extensions to proven fields and 9 discovered new pools. Posey County was foremost in wildcat drilling, with 37 wells completed (Table 6). Thirty-five per cent of the wells drilled in 1942 were wildcat, as compared with 25.5 per cent in 1941. It is anticipated that the percentage of wildcat wells drilled in 1943 will be greater, although the total number ol ,wells drilled in the state will probably be less. The new discoveries in Indiana in I942 were, for the most part, one-well pools in the southwestern part—in Posey, Gibson and Spencer Counties (Table 4). Most of the development in pools took place in the . Hazelton and Kirksville pools in Gibson County, Mr. Vernon pool in Posey County and the Vernon Heights pool in Vander-burgh County. Deeper production was obtained from the Osage limestone in the Hazelton pool at a depth of 2402 ft., 650 ft. below the productive McClosky limestone. The well had an initial production of 140 barrels. Extensions to 17 pools in the southwestern part of the state were successfully completed (Table 5). An interesting development during 1942 was new production from the Devonian limestone in the Dodds Bridge pool, Sullivan County. The Ohio Oil Co. deepened one of its wells, which had been producing from a shallow sand, to the,Devonian, and it was completed for an initial production of 77 bbl. Five other Devonian producing wells were completed in that area. Crude-oil production in Indiana in 1942 was 6,609,000 bbl. (Table I). The Griffin field, Gibson and Posey Counties, which produced approximately 3,550,000 bbl., accounted for more than half of the state's production. extremely powerful tools for building predictive and generative models. ML can be used for building highly accurate regression and classification models. But without careful data science and statistical analysis, a regression or classification model could be highly biased and completely wrong – and we may not even realise. An example rock density estimation task will be used to illustrate the potential gains and possible pitfalls in using ML and AI in Mineral Resource estimation. What could possibly go wrong? Nothing! For most simple regression or classification problems, very little. For density estimation, using the global mean may be all that is possible, but the resource classification would need to reflect the uncertainty in global estimation of tonnage. Everything! From data collection and measurement, from selecting ML and AI techniques and designing the analysis workflow to our own cognitive bias. The things that could go wrong are vast and may include but not limited to asking the wrong question, not asking questions, data bias, measurement errors, insufficient data coverage, not collecting the right variables, not collecting enough observations, collecting clustered samples, unbalanced data, filtering out data without reason (outliers), clipping data (outliers), relying on automatic feature selection, including irrelevant variables, excluding relevant variables, geological interpretation, changing context, blindly following best practice, splitting small data sets, subsetting large data sets, using the wrong tool for the task, insufficient budget to complete the analysis, not allowing enough time for testing and experimentation (the science), focusing too much on building the model (the engineering), not learning from the data, our assumptions, our preconceptions, and our skill. This paper will explore the question of how training regression models to predict rock density are affected by gaps in the data (missing observations and missing variables). What could possibly go wrong?

Some observations on 'ancient' mining at Phalaborwa C. E. MORE. B.A. (Pretoria) (Visitor) A brief account is given of historical references to the Phalaborwa area, the first being to the mountain of copper and iron sought by Francois de Cuiper in 1725. These are followed by a description of several finds in the area, which are related to finds described in the literature and to Bantu tradition on the subject. Phalaborwa is one of the earliest known mining sites in the Republic of South Africa, Loolekop having been a mining centre, as shown by carbon-14 dating, since 770 A.D.

"Traditionally deep shaft sinking from the ground surface was carried out using drill and blast methods. Although large diameter blind shaft drilling has been carried out successfully on numerous occasions previously, including as early as 1852 in Germany (Auld, 1995), little attempt has been made until more recently to mechanise the shaft sinking excavation process using down-the-hole machines. This paper reviews the development of deep shaft sinking machines from the early 1970’s up to the present day. INTRODUCTION Mechanical excavation methods can significantly improve excavation performance, in order to access natural resources faster, and labour safety is increased compared to drill and blast operations. However, shaft sinking machines need to be capable of accommodating all the basic requirements for deep shaft sinking, namely: 1. Excavation and muck removal 2. Ground stability control 3. Groundwater ingress control 4. Temporary lining installation 5. Permanent lining installation and watertight sealing 6. Ventilation 7. Secondary means of egress for personnel In addition, how the machine operates in the shaft is an important factor, either slung on ropes from a surface headgear or on its own in the bottom of the shaft. An all-embracing machine which can deal with all of the above conditions is impossible but many of these requirements can be incorporated into a single machine. Deep shaft sinking also differs greatly from normal tunnel construction which employs the use of either a roadheader arm installed within a shield or a full-face tunnelling machine for excavation. Hydrostatic pressure and ground stability problems increase with depth, whereas in tunnelling the depth is normally relatively shallow and the aforementioned factors remain approximately constant along the tunnel length. DEEP SHAFT SINKING MACHINES All the shaft sinking carried out previously in the UK was by the traditional method of drill and blast. Elsewhere, in other parts of the world, attempts have been made to mechanise the process."

"IntroductoryThe common practice of the petroleum industry is to measure viscosity by the use of instruments of the efflux or capillary tube type. The Saybolt universal viscosimeter has been tentatively adopted as a standard by the American Society for Testing Materials and is used extensively in the United States.Several instruments of foreign origin are also more or less familiar, such as the Redwood, the Engier, and the Baroey.Effina-type viscosimeters are well adapted to the ordinary needs of petroleum testing laberatories as they are simple and rugged in construction and away to manipulate, even in the hands of operators lacking scientific training. They have, however, certain limitations and for certain spacial types of work there are notable advantages incident to the use of the so-called torsion types of type of viacosimeter. The most satisfactory type of torsion viscosimeter now available in the market some to be that of MacMchael, which has been discussed in detail in a recent paper (Herschel, W. H., The MacMichael Torsional Viscosimeter. Jour. of Int. and Eng. Chem., vol. 12, 1920, pp. 282-286). The present paper indicates conditions under which this viscosimeter may be used to advantage in the petroleum laboratory, and outlines simple methods of operation and calibration."
