Elastic-plastic finite-element simulation of cut-and-fill stoping in deep, narrow veins shows substantial quantitative agreement with field measurements of stope closure and fill pressure made at two mines in the Coeur d'Alene mining district of northern Idaho. The simulation procedure, validated by field data, was used in an analytical study of vein-wall closure and sill-pillar stress as influenced by fill modulus, rock modulus, and premining stress. Ratios of closure and pillar stress in the filled stopes to closure and pillar stress in the unfilled stopes are used as prediction indices for fill performance. In general, the support capability of fill increases dramatically as the ratio of fill modulus to rock modulus approaches 1. A significant reduction in closure .from the open stope--up to 75 percent--occurs with a relatively low-quality 10-ksi-modulus fill (rock modulus of 1,000 ksi). However, a higher quality fill is needed to achieve a substantial reduction in pillar stress from that of the open stope. A 100-ksi-modulus fill reduces pillar stress in both the 36-foot and l6-foot pillars (vein width is 10 feet) by about 50 percent relative to the open stope.

Single-pass hybrid laser-arc welding of 10-mm thick cast plates of CA6NM, a low carbon martensitic stainless steel, was carried out in butt joint configuration using a continuous wave fiber laser at its maximum power of 5.2 kW over welding speeds ranging from 0.75 m/min to 1.2 m/min. The microstructures from the fusion zone to the heat affected zone and base metal were characterized after post-weld tempering at 600°C for 1 hour. From optical and scanning electron microscopy examination, the fusion zone was observed to mainly consist of tempered lath martensite and some residual delta-ferrite. The mechanical properties including microindentation hardness, ultimate tensile strength and Charpy impact energy were evaluated in the post-weld tempered condition and correlated to the microstructures and defects. The ultimate tensile strength and Charpy impact energy values of all the fully penetrated welds in the tempered condition were acceptable according to ASTM, ASME and industrial specifications. The failure mechanisms during tensile deformation and Charpy impact loading were examined by scanning electron microscopy, fractography and optical metallographic analysis near the fracture origin.

Management of caustic red mud wastes at the QAL bauxite refinery uses an innovative approach . involving neutralising the red mud with seawater; solids settle in a Red Mud Dam and residual water (pH = 8.6) is discharged to a tidal inlet. A survey of 18 trace elements in sediment, water, mangroves and molluscs, and an ecological survey of benthic fauna in the inlet, and at near-pristine control sites, revealed no significant trends that were linked to the discharge, except for the concentration of Al which was slightly elevated within 100m of the outfall. Trace element concentrations in water samples were close to, or below, world average seawater values and oysters collected near the outfall were acceptable for human consumption. The impact of discharges is minimised by a high tidal range, >60% flushing of the inlet in each tidal cycle, and the very high trace element binding capacity of sediment in the dam (> 100meq/ 100g dry mud).

"A new pile driving and drilling navigation system has been developed. It utilizes the commonly used surveying total station, combined with an innovative reticle. Conventional crosshairs have been replaced by a concentrically circular reticle called Baum. It allows for easily performed measurements of central axes of cylindrical objects such as piles, chimneys, electricity poles, etc. This provides several significant advantages compared to other existing systems. It is cost-effective as only one operator is required to control deviations in positioning and inclination. Furthermore, repetitive reinstallation of the instrument is not required for every pile driven or hole drilled. It is also a safer method, as workers have no need to be near a pile driver or drilling machine to perform the measurements. With Baum Station, necessary measurements can be performed away from the actual work area. Moreover, it is highly accurate with real-time solutions, as three-dimensional orientation information for the pile/drill is obtained simultaneously with the pile being driven or the hole being drilled. This allows for the highest levels of precision-control and correction to minimize eccentricity of the intended center positioning.INTRODUCTIONBackgroundIn foundation construction for structures, pile foundations are widely used for deep bearing strata. There are two patterns to driving piles: vertically or obliquely to the ground. The shapes of the piles are normally cylindrical. Vertical pile foundations are employed as the foundations of many structures due to their high workability. There is a problem however, which is that this method does not bear measurement data as construction accuracy is visually checked. On the other hand, tilted pile foundations are rarely employed because it is too difficult to ensure construction accuracy. In addition, commonly used percussion methods create noise and vibrations when the piles are hit, while there are advantages that thinner piles are available, ensuring earthquake-resistance, as tilted piles curb horizontal displacements of structures, which may be caused by earthquake ground motion. However, current requirements of cost reduction bring professional attention to tilted pile foundations, which can be driven reasonably and economically with much research of tilted piles having been carried out to improve their capacity. Also, a method of screwing piling has been developed, which produces small amounts of noise and vibrations. This method has solved tasks of workability and environmental burdens, and is becoming more and more common. However, there is a necessity to develop a method to accurately measure angles of piles’ axes in order to drive piles into the ground with appropriate angles. Coal refuse impoundments are disposal facilities specifically designed for the coal mining industry. Re-purposing refuse impoundments for co-disposal with natural gas flowback water and waste rock overburden has been investigated. The aims of this study were to investigate properties of coal refuse classification under the influence of co-disposed wastes as geochemical material exposure pathways from hydraulically exposed sodium and calcium ( Na+, Ca2+) cation loading from disposal of flowback water produced during the development of horizontal drilled natural shale gas frack wells, and waste rock having limestone characteristics. The geotechnical index classification of saturated cohesionless refuse is required to evaluate the liquefaction potential for strain or strength loss contributing to ground movements. This study is relevant to identifying changes in the coal refuse geotechnical index classification as sand-like, clay-like, or a borderline transitional material from the effects of ion and waste exposure in the impoundment’s reservoir porewater. Laboratory geotechnical tests were performed on fine coal refuse blended with different cations to classify the altered plastic behavior and index classification. Following determination of the index classification, the specimen’s stress–strain responses were investigated through isotropically consolidated undrained (ICU) triaxial compression tests. This experimental study culminated with two salient findings: the first is that introduction of ions alone into the refuse tailings or impoundment porewater resulted in significant material changes in property index classification, and the second finding was that the difference in refuse index classification did not correlate into noticeable effects of the monotonic undrained triaxial strength parameters.

"Standing support is often used in conjunction with underground retreat mining. Knowledge of the load-displacement behavior of standing support and loading induced by the mine opening is critical to proper support selection. The NIOSH STOP database contains load-displacement laboratory test data for most commonly used standing supports. Hydraulic load cells currently used to measure in-situ loading of standing supports have exhibited leakage under load, producing irregularities within the dataset. An improved hydraulic load cell eliminates leakage and produces more consistent data.INTRODUCTIONA hydraulic load cell, more commonly known as a flat jack or JackPack, is a device installed to determine the loading characteristics of the roof-to-floor supports. These standing or roof-to-floor supports include, but are not limited to pumpable cribs, cans, wooden cribs (4-point, 9-point, etc.), metal props, wood timbers, concrete donut cribs, and other variations of these standing supports.Flat jack devices have been used previously to determine the loading of such roof to floor supports. The most commonly used load cell for standing supports is based on a design intended for pre-stressing standing supports, not load measurement. Preloading helps to keep the supports, such as timbers props and cribs, in place during the dynamic loading associated with blasting (Barczak and Tadolini, 2004).Flat Jacks are manufactured in various shapes and sizes depending on the application; common shapes are square and round that are 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) thick when collapsed, as shown in Figure 1. These load cells are produced in South Africa and can be formed into several different shapes depending on the application (Barczak, 2003). The sheet metal that makes up the bladder is comprised of 19-gauge or 1.11 mm (0.04 inch) thickness; the top and bottom pieces of sheet metal are resistance-seam welded around the perimeter. There are two different ports installed on one of the bladder skin corners of the flat jacks; these ports allow fluid to fill the unit, and the other port has a relief valve. The fill port is comprised of a check valve. The pressure relief valve is located in the second port; preset to 1,724 kPa (250 psi), the pressure relief valve keeps the load cell from bursting. Bursting of these load cells typically causes a small tear in the metal skin allowing the fluid to leak out without a large catastrophic failure.The effective inflation range of these load cells is between 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) to 254.0 mm (10.0 inches) thick. Different types of fluids can inflate these load cells but the most common and easily accessible fluid for testing applications is water. Water pressure from the mine supply line can inflate these load cells to the desired load. Depending on the pre-stressing requirements, a pneumatic powered pump, hydraulic pump, or hand pump may be required to inflate the load cells."

Heavy rainfall and typhoon oftentimes cause the collapse of hillslopes across mountain roads. Disastrous consequences of slope collapses necessitate the approach for predicting their occurrences. In practice, slope collapse prediction can be formulated as a deterministic classification problem with two class labels, namely ?collapse? and ?non-collapse?. Nevertheless, due to the criticality and the uncertainty of the problem, evaluating the collapse susceptibility of an area is a challenging task. This study proposes a novel Artificial Intelligence (AI) approach, named as K-Nearest Neighbor Based Bayesian Classifier (KNNBC), to deal with slope collapse assessment. In the proposed model, Bayesian inference is used as a framework to achieve probabilistic prediction of slope collapse. Meanwhile, K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) is employed as a density estimation technique. Equipped with probabilistic outputs, the K-NNBC is able to yield predictions with different levels of confidence and diminish misclassified cases. Experimental results point out that the proposed model is very helpful for decision-makers in slope collapse assessment and disaster prevention planning.

Dwindling near-surface mineral reserves emphasize the need for the development of exploration techniques capable of greater depth penetration; geochemical techniques tradition- ally have been restricted to the search for deposits having at least a sub-outcrop expression. Rock geochemical techniques developed in Cyprus in 1967-1968 recognized anomalous conditions in volcanic rocks up to one mile from an ore de- posit. Research by the Exploration Geochemistry Group at the University of New Brunswick has shown that some massive sulphide deposits in New Brunswick have well-defined halos of major, minor, and trace elements in the host rocks extending up to 1,200 metres (4,000 feet) laterally along the same stratigraphic horizon, and up to 450 metres (1,500 feet) vertically in hanging wall rocks which apparently post-date mineralization; well-defined halos have also been found in foot- wall rocks. Some of these halos are readily identified as individual elements or as element pairs; others are so subtle as to be recognizable only through computer-calculated multivariate analysis. Research continues to extend the dimension of rock geochemical halos for regional exploration and for identification of more restrictive anomalous conditions which may closely define the location and extent of buried sulphide deposits.

The study explored a new combination amine collector (XK-28) that can obtain better flotation index and defoaming rate for magnetic iron ore. A pure quartz mineral test indicates that dodecylamine, XK-I, or XK-II has good collection effect on quartz and their best flotation pH is in the range of 6–7. The experimental results of a combination collector (XK-I:XK-II = 2:8.) show that the separation effect for quartz and magnetite is better than that of a single collector. The single factor for actual mineral test shows that when the combined reagent is used as the collector, the best conditions are pH = 7, 90 g/t dosage, and XK-I:XK-II = 2:8, which is consistant with the pure mineral test. The difference for dodecylamine as a collector is that the optimal dodecylamine dosage is 60 g/t. Under the best conditions of actual ore test, dodecylamine and XK-28 are respectively used as the collector to compare the flotation indexes. Study results indicate the magnetite grade using XK-28 as the collector is higher by 3.02% than that of using dodecylamine, recovery is increased by 1.92% over that of using dodecylamine. Based on the measurement results of zeta potential, uses of XK-28 can slightly increase the zeta potential difference of quartz and magnetite to enhance the flotation effect. The mechanism of action between the XK-28 collector and the actual ore from the Gongchangling plant is physical adsorption, and this adsorption also has hydrogen bond formation. Contact angle results shows that XK-28 improves the hydrophobicity of quartz better than dodecylamine. Compared with dodecylamine, XK-28 is more sparsely arranged on the surface of the foam. The foam produced by the XK-28 collector has better air permeability and it is more likely to merge and disappear with bubbles.

High Voltage Pulse (HVP) technology has the potential to transform traditional mineral processing practice in the mining industry. HVP pre-treatment has been shown to enable ore preconcentration, achieve ore pre-weakening and improve mineral liberation. In order to improve the efficiencies of these novel HVP applications, it is essential to understand how HVP operational factors affect ore breakage in HVP pre-treatment. A two-level fractional factorial experiment using two rock samples, a gold-copper ore and a basalt sample, was performed to determine which factors have statistically significant influences on breakage probability, size reduction, and energy efficiency, and which factors have insignificant influences. Operational factors investigated include applied voltage, electrode gap, number of pulse discharges, the number of rocks being processed per batch, and rock size. In total, 1920 batch tests were conducted. For ore breakage characterised in terms of breakage probability and the degree of size reduction during HVP pre-treatment, the dominant factors were identified to be the number of pulse discharges, voltage, and the number of particles present in the processing zone. As all these three factors are related to the specific energy, it is concluded that the specific energy is the most important factor controlling ore breakage in HVP treatment. In terms of the efficiency by which spark energy is transferred from the generator energy, the factors found to have the most dominating influence were the particle size, the number of rock particles present in the processing zone and the voltage. Increasing the values of these factors reduced the loss of HVP energy during the energy transfer process. The factorial experiment using the two ore samples with vastly different mineralisation produced similar results. Located on the island of Mindanao in the Southern Philippines, the Tampakan copper-gold deposit represents a major high-sulfidation epithermal deposit superimposed on an underlying porphyry copper system. With a recent JORC compliant indicated and inferred resource estimate of 1104 million tonnes at 0.65 per cent copper and 0.26 g/t gold at a 0.3 per cent copper cut-off grade, Tampakan represents the largest undeveloped copper-gold deposit in Southeast Asia. Since its acquisition by Indophil ResourcesÆ affiliate Sagittarius Mines Inc in August 2002, the deposit is the subject of an ongoing preliminary feasibility study into project viability that is initially focused on a higher-grade copper zone in the north-central part of the deposit. The deposit is hosted by a sequence of subaerial andesitic flows (Tampakan Andesite Sequence) related to a highly eroded andesitic stratavolcanic complex of Pliocene age. Detailed mapping and geochronological dating has identified four volcanic cycles or centres that have been sequentially developed and eroded. This stratovolcanic complex is interpreted to lie on the northern extension of the Sangihe volcanic arc that extends from Northern Sulawesi in Indonesia. The Tampakan district is located within a complex tectonic setting dominated by WNW trending wrench faults that form part of the trans-Mindanao Cotabato Fault Zone. The Tampakan deposit is located near the intersection of one of several WNW trending splay structures with a prominent NNE trending dilational structure, one of many that transect the host volcanic complex. High-sulfidation style copper-gold mineralisation at Tampakan is broadly associated with and central to a flat-lying tabular body of pervasive silica and silica-clay alteration developed within a district- scale lithocap of advanced-argillic and argillic hydrothermal alteration that extends over an area of 90 km2 within the volcanic complex.

Cinnabar was discovered in southwestern Arkansas on Little Missouri River in sec. 1, T.7S., R.26W., in April, 1930, and near Antoine Creek in sec. 28, T.6S., R.23W., some 15 miles farther east in May of the same year. It was not, however, until June, 1931, that cinnabar was identified as such in a specimen from the original discovery area sent to W. M. Weigell by Walter F. Hintze of Murfreesboro. Almost simultaneously2, in July, 1931, Moritz Norden of Hot Springs identified specimens from the Antoine Creek area as cinnabar. Immediate interest in the district followed the identification of cinnabar and by January, 1932, the district was known to extend as a mineralized belt about one mile wide trending east-northeast from sec. 13, T.7S., R.27W., in Howard County across central Pike County and into Clark County to sec. 19, T.6S., R.23W., thence extending southeast into sections 33 and 34 of the same township. Since then, cinnabar has been found in sec. 6, T.7S., R.22W., thus giving a total east-west length to the district of approximately 30 miles. Interest focused mainly on the two discovery areas, with the result that mining development has progressed most rapidly in those localities. In the Antoine Creek area the Arkansas Quicksilver Co. has done considerable exploration work and has retorted the high-grade ore so obtained. In the Little Missouri area the Southwestern Quicksilver Co. has had a 12-ton rotary furnace in more or less continuous operation since April, 1932, and has been the largest producer in the district. The segment of the Upper Cenozoic volcanic chain (CVZ) located on the western border of South America (16-28¦S lat.) is constituted by an association of strato- volcanoes and ignimbrite sheets, with high K calco-alkaline affinities. Strata-bound volcanoes, mainly of andesitic and dacitic composition, present along the whole chain, and various hydrothermal alteration zones, on the slopes and in the cores of eroded volcanic structures. Some of these altera- tion zones bear epithermal precious metal ores and sulphur deposits, which at present are being exploited. The studied Salar de Gorbea area, located in the Andes of northern Chile (25-26¦S lat.) contains a numer- ous group of Miocene to Quaternary stratovolcanoes, with advanced argillic and extreme silicification hydrothermal alteration in their cores and on their slopes, favoring the formation of great volumes of alunite within altered zones and sulphur deposits in the higher parts of the volcanic edifices. Simultaneously, siliceous hydrothermal breccia of the phreato-magmatic type, with evidences of hydromag- matic explosions are recognizable, allowing, in some cases, the ascent towards the surface of rock fragments belonging to the Paleozoic pre volcanic basement. Radiometric ages obtained in some of the hydro- thermal alteration zones (K-Ar in alunite) are slighty young- er than the unaltered rocks which constitute the strato- volcano. Trace element (Hg, As, Sb, S, Au, Ag, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mo) patterns in orientative rock samplings show that the studied alterations zones correspond to high sectors of the cpithermal system, without evidences of metallic minerali- zation on surface. The weak erosive action due to the ex- tremely and climatic conditions in this segment of the Andes, has not allowed the cropping out of deeper areas of the hydrothermal alteration zones, in contrast to other Miocene more eroded volcanic edifices and Miocene vol- canic terranes of the Andean Range.

"At the regrind or secondary grinding stages of metal ores, usually the concern about the energy efficiency is extremely important. In general, the specific energy consumption at this stage is higher than in the primary stages of grinding. In addition, it has been observed a tendency of finer grinding in the new projects of metallic ores, due to the finer mineral liberation, which leads to an increasing capital and operational costs. In Brazil, during the last 10 years, regrind P80 sizes of approximately 40 to 20 ?m have been necessary in all new iron and copper plants. The use of conventional ball mills, adequate for primary grinding, can result in low energy efficiency with products below a P80 of 50 ?m. This paper presents an overview of the regrind circuits in Brazil that operate with vertical mills and the results of industrial surveys at selected vertical mill circuits. Where possible, comparison is made between the plant results and the design criteria and laboratory regrind tests used for the mill sizing."

Platinum-group metal (PGM) flotation .. concentrate from the Stillwater Complex, MT, was subjected to biooxidation using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in an effort to break down the sulfide minerals and liberate the ? associated PGM's for subsequent chemical leaching. Bacterial treatment oxidized up to 94 pct of the sulfide present, destroyed the PGM-bearing pentlandite [ (Ni,Fe),9Ss) mineralization, and dissolved most of the nickel in the concentrate. Results showed that increased sulfide oxidation during the biological stage led to improved PGH recovery in the subsequent. chemical leaching stage. cyanidation at 80° c proved to be the best chemical leachant tested. It removed 7.6 pct of the palladium, 94 pct of the rhodium, 97 pct of the gold, but only 34 pct of the platinum from the biooxidized concentrate.

The world-class Neves-Corvo deposits were intersected by drilling in 1977. They occur in the (Carboniferous) Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB), Western Europe&apos;s largest stock of base metals (see Bamga, 1990, in Dallmeyer RD, & Martinez E, eds, Pre-Mesozoic Geology of Iberia, Springer-Verlag). Massive and stringer sulfides in the area sum up to about 200 Mt (109 kg), in five main orebodies (Neves, Corvo, Graca, Zambujal and Lombador). They include unique, extremely high grade copper and tin ores ( - 33 Mt Cu ores, -7.5% Cu, and -4 Mt Sn ores, -2.6% Sn, - 12.5% Cu). Also present are -50 Mt polimetallic ores (-6% Zn, 1.2% Pb, 64 ppm Ag). The remaining are relatively low grade pyritic massive and stringer sulfides (Cu < 2%. Sn < 1%, Zn equivalent < 4%). The geological setting is one of bymodal submarine volcanism, with predominant felsic, explosive volcanism and associated sedimentation (detrital and chemical), which took place on a shelf-facies, quartzite-phyllite basement (of Upper Devonian age). The plate tectonic setting has been the object of much debate. Current interpretations favour that the IPB volcanism took place in a tensional fore-arc region, associated with oblique subduction and collision (Silva et al., 1990, same volume as above). At Neves-Corvo there are many different ores, that may be grouped in four main types: fissural (at the base), breccia, massive (intermediate) and "ruban6 " (at the top). Fissural ores seem to correspond to stockworks in contrasting types of host rocks (gray to black shale, sericitic, chloritic and graphitic, and light gray volcanic rock). Massive ore may contain significant shaly gangue, at the base of individual orebodies, and silica-rich (cherty) varieties towards the top. The more sulfide-rich varieties predominate, and are usually well banded.
