In this paper, problem of short-term production planning for dimension stone quarries was mathematically modeled using a binary integer programming. The model includes an objective function, which was founded as the minimization of the costs due to the total cutting planes of the blocks. This objective may cause to maximization of the net present value (NPV) in dimension stone quarries. During the mathematical modeling the essential constraints are dimension stone quarry capacities and the market demand, block accessibility for the equipment and the reserve constraints. As a base, an optimal size and shape of extractable blocks should be first assigned according to the available extraction technique and the market demand, in order to create a geological block model. Then an economical block model is provided by assignment of a value of ?one? for ore blocks and ?zero? for waste. Maximum profitability and minimum amount of the ore wastage can be gained using this plan and modeling.

During April 1967 a Frasch sulfur mine was placed in operation near Fort Stockton, Pecos County, in West Texas. This was the first Frasch mine to recover native sulfur from a deposit not associated with the caprock of a salt dome. Since 1967 two additional mines have been opened in west Texas, another one near the first at Fort Stockton and a third one near Orla in Culberson County (Figure 2). Recoverable reserves at the Culberson County mine are estimated to be 57,000,000 long tons of native sulfur (Zimmerman and Thomas, 1969). Total recoverable reserves at the three mines probably exceed 60,000,000 long tons, Studies of the geochemical cycle of native sulfur mineralization in test Texas indicate an origin similar to the deposits on salt domes although the geologic framework is different. A comparison of the geologic setting of the west Texas deposits with the deposits in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics as reported in the literature, reveals many similarities. Floor heave or deformation of the mine floor into the mine opening is a problem which has plagued coal mines in this country and others. In mining areas where room and pillar mining is practiced, floor heave generally occurs when the stress applied to the floor material by a coal pillar exceeds the bearing capacity of the floor strata. When the floor strata beneath the coal pillar fail, the pillar moves downward and displaces the material under it. This material, in turn, moves outward and upward into the mine opening (Figure 1). As the underlying materials fail, the load supported by the coal pillar may be transferred to adjacent pillars. If these are marginally stable, they too may become overloaded and push into the floor. Thus, floor heave can spread through a large portion of the mine in a progressive manner. As the pillars push into the floor, differential movement and flexure of the roof strata may cause them to weaken and fail, resulting in subsidence of the ground surface above the mine. This paper describes the problem as it was manifested in the Zeigler Coal Company No. 5 and Murdock room and pillar coal mines near Murdock, Illinois, and reports the results of a U. S. Bureau of Mines- sponsored study conducted by the University of Missouri-Rolla. During the course of the study, floor heave in the two mines hindered the transportation of men, machines, and coal to and from the working mine-face, interrupted ventilation plans, drastically increased roadway maintenance costs, intensified safety and strata control problems, destroyed large pieces of equipment, and, several times, pre- vented access to otherwise minable coal resources. The ultimate objective of the study was to develop one or more simple procedures to allow detection of a potential floor heave problem during the exploration phase of mine design--before initiation of production mining.

THE mine and milling plant of Demonstration Gold Mines, Ltd., is near the city limits of Baguio, Mt. Province, P. I. The mine road connects with the main highway to Manila. The nearest railway point is near sea level, approximately 40 miles distant. The Baguio district is very mountainous and has one of the heaviest rainfalls in the world. It is therefore difficult to maintain roads or to impound tailings and mine dumps. All supplies are trucked into the district direct from Manila or the nearest railway point, which means uncertain deliveries and high freight rates. Installation of equipment is difficult and costly. The average elevation at the mine is 4000 ft. and the climatic condi-tions.are ideal except for a three months rainy season. The company generates its own power for mining and milling opera-tions with three 400-hp. Ruston Diesel engines direct connected to 250-kw. General Electric alternating current generators. Labor conditions have been excellent, although at present social security laws are causing some unrest. Labor receives a higher average wage rate in this district than other labor in the Islands. The com-pany also furnishes free living quarters, hospitalization and work-men's compensation. Taxation has been reasonable up to the present time, but some of the new mining legislation may make it difficult to operate and pay dividends. The future depends largely upon the continuation of $35 gold and the political outcome in the Islands.

This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1953 was made under a co-operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 101 samples of aviation gasoline which include, for the second time in this series of reports, data on some samples of grade 108/135 aviation fuel. Data also are given for 32 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers' production in their laboratories and the results sub-mitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 19 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 19 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

Durante 2017, a operação do AF#2 da Ternium Argentina exigiu alterações da basicidade binária em uma ampla faixa entre 2.0 a 2.7 e no teor de MgO. Esta faixa de trabalho motivou o estudo das propriedades metalúrgicas do sinter e sua interação com outros componentes materiais da carga do Alto-Forno. Além disso, foi testado e analisado a influência de duas qualidades diferentes de granulado. Para entender os efeitos da composição química, um conjunto de testes de redução-desintegração foram desenvolvidos. Aliando com perfis isotérmicos (ISO 4696-1), perfis variáveis de temperatura e composição de gás, com intuito de simular a redução no AF. As propriedades sob alta temperatura também foram avaliadas por meio de ensaios de amolecimento e fusão, compondo a carga sinter, pelota e minério granulado. Utilizando amostras de sinter de diferentes basicidades e teores de MgO. Os resultados obtidos e sua influência no comportamento dos altos-fornos são analisados no presente trabalho.

The Bureau of Mines has demonstrated a hydrometallurgical method to separate chromium from other metals in a variety of surface-finishing wastes by precipitation with benzoate ion. The resulting chromium salt may then be converted to the hydroxide, and the benzoate may be recycled. Chromium recoveries of 92 to 100 pct are obtained.

Com o aumento da complexidade dos materiais metálicos, duas ou mais fases produto podem nuclear simultaneamente durante uma transformação de fase. A nucleação de novos grãos pode ocorrer por saturação de sítios ou por taxa constante. Neste contexto, esse trabalho busca estudar a influência da transformação simultânea com nucleação por taxa constante de duas fases produto na cinética, na microestrutura e na distribuição do tamanho de grão em uma região tridimensional. A efeito de comparação, também foi realizado o estudo de reações em que uma fase nucleia por saturação de sítios e a outra fase, por taxa constante e ambas iniciam sua transformação no instante inicial, de forma simultânea. Os resultados obtidos computacionalmente foram comparados às equações analíticas, apresentando ótima concordância entre os modelos. Foi observado que parâmetros microestruturais como tamanho médio de grãos e morfologia das interfaces podem auxiliar o pesquisador a identificar o tipo de nucleação, seja por saturação de sítios, seja por taxa constante.

The historical development of South Yorkshire mining is traced and note made of the liability to generate spontaneous combustion of some of the seams which have been worked. The liability factor is analysed firstly as an inherent property in the material of a coal seam, and secondly as a circumstance of a situation in which access is provided for the air necessary to sustain oxidation. The geological settings in which incidents of heatings have been known to occur is discussed and conditions favouring a natural pre-disposition to spontaneous oxidation exposed, particularly the effect of argillaceous material overlying the seam. An extensive strata-dynamic study follows to demonstrate the situations in which stray air currents tend to impinge on readily oxidizable material. Prevention techniques are indicated as the identification of strata-dynamic situations in which air access to broken coal is induced and thereafter th operational action to seal off the voids which have been opened up so as to exclude air from the broken coal. Measures to reduce the tendency for ventilating air to short circuit across waste voids, and to obviate deflection of air into packs are outlined. The importance of face and roadway design features is demonstrated and the consequences of practices inimical to good control of spontaneous combustion are related. Discussions on means of detection and also on the sealant materials available are included.

In tunneling through water-bearing formations, the expense of controlling the water can have a major impact on overall project cost. The author has seen the cost of an eight-foot, finished sewer tunnel rise from under $500 per foot to over $1,000 when a water problem, anticipated as modest, became severe. There is need for greater professionalism in the approach to groundwater control. The days of the forked stick should be behind us. The basic technology exists. Its application is not yet widespread. This paper discusses predrainage; that is, the lowering of water in advance of tunnel excavation. Both free air and compressed air tunnels are considered. Examples from recent tunnel projects are described. SPECIAL NATURE OF TUNNEL DEWATERING Tunneling is unlike other excavations below the water table in a number of significant ways. The tunnel excavation is always on the critical path; if production slows or stops, there is no other work for the heading crews, no other work to carry the cost of service crews and job overhead. The dewatering commitment must be made well in advance. Construction of wells, and pumping down take time. After the heading reaches a trouble area, time is not available

RECENT events have emphasized with renewed force the well known fact that war greatly intensifies the demand for certain metals, particularly for iron, copper, and zinc. Any increase in the use of iron and steel, whether in war or peace, is also accompanied by increased consumption of those metals which find their chief application as ferro-alloys, such as nickel, chromium, manganese, molybdenum, tungsten, and vanadium. Further, since high temperatures are essential for the production of all these metals, activity in the metal industry is inevitably accompanied by an insistent demand for refractories. For example, in North American practice the consumption of magnesitic hearth refractories is frequently expressed in pounds per ton of steel. This quantity (not including straight dolomite) ranges on individual plants from about 7 to 12 pounds. When the industry is operating at approximately full capacity, the ratio of refractory to steel tends to increase, since the tonnage of steel produced is recognized as of paramount importance, and this leads to the harder driving of furnaces and less regard for the effect on refractories. It should also be observed that the cost of refractories per ton of metal produced is always so low, in comparison with other items, that it may even increase while the cost of metal per ton is being reduced through more continuous operation and the use of higher temperatures. As one prominent Canadian copper metallurgist has tersely expressed it, he is "not in business to save refractories but to smelt ore". The effect of war demands and of general industrial activity upon the production of basic and neutral refractories is clearly shown in Figure 1, which gives the value of chrome ore and magnesitic-dolomite produced in Canada during the period 1907 to 1937. Tonnages have not been shown, as these are not available for the full period; such figures as have been published from time to time are not strictly comparable, since both raw rock and finished products have on occasion been included. The preliminary figures for 1938, which are now available, have been prepared by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics on a different basis from those immediately preceding, and have therefore not been shown.

"The Navan zinc-lead ore deposit (70 million tonnes) is hosted principally (97%) by the Meath Formation (Lower Carboniferous, Courceyan, Navan Group), comprising a lower, mainly carbonate mudstone unit, the Stackallan Member, and an upper grainstone-dominated unit. TheStackallan Member, about 60 m thick, comprises about 35 peritidal cycles including an oolitic grain-stone interval. Grainstones forming the upper part of the formation, about 150 m thick, comprise at least six shallowing-upward ramp cycles. Emergence horizons are indicated by subaerial dissolution surfaces, in situ breccias, and a single palaeosol.Most dolomitization at Navan is con?ned to the Meath Formation. The linear dolomite body,trending NE-SW, has a ?attened, laterally limited, tabular geometry in cross-section, suggesting that dolomitizing ?uids initially rose vertically, cross-cutting stratigraphic and sedimentological bound-aries, although ?uid ?ow was subsequently controlled by these features.Three stages of dolomitization are indicated by textural relationships, cathodoluminescence (CL),oxygen isotopes, and ?uid inclusion data. Stage 1 crystals, with generally dully luminescing cores and up to six overlying subsidiary zones, are the main replacive phase. Crystal surfaces are commonly corroded and overlain by bright stage 2 rhombs (which also form new nuclei lining molds and fractures). Three subsets of zones are present in stage 2 crystals: bright, non-luminescent, and dull; these are locally separated by additional corrosion surfaces. Stage 3 comprises relatively large baroque crystals, generally dully luminescent but with up to seven sub-zones. Isotopic and ?uid inclusion data suggest growth of successive stages from waters which became progressively hotter(60°–160°C).The distribution of the ores follows the dolomite trend. Ores were precipitated between Stages1 and 2 of dolomite growth, following Stage 2, and also during the nucleation and growth of Stage3 crystals. Dolomitization and mineralization appear to have been temporally and genetically related. The cyclic sedimentation of the host rocks, which accentuates lithological and petrographical contrasts between depositional units, controlled dolomitization. The relationship between dolomitization and mineralization, which is closely associated with faults, provides powerful exploration criteria. The recognition of these features in limestones elsewhere in the Irish ore ?eld may point toward unrecognized zinc-lead prospects."

Por ello, el objetivo del texto es revisar los procedimientos seguidos en el desarrollo sistemático de las celdas de 1000 pies3 de capacidad y la evaluación de su performance en el beneficio de minerales metálicos.

A GOOD idea of the magnitude of the underground operations at Climax can be gained from the following figures. A little more than 43,000,000 tons has been drawn from the mine and of this amount, 40,500,000 tons has been drawn in the past ten years and 12,000,000 tons was drawn in two of the war years. The maximum daily average output over a period of one month was slightly more than 20,000 tons but during this period, production on certain days was 24,000 tons, and 9000 tons was produced in a single eight-hour shift. This production came chiefly from 260 draw points although all of them were never in operation at one time. The haulage system for these draw points is made up of 7.5 miles of 36-in.-gauge track, and 131,000 ft. of subsidiary drifts and 44,000 ft. of raises have been driven to develop the necessary broken ore reserves for this high production. Power consumption is often considered an index of operating efficiency. In 1943, the year of maximum production, the mine power consumption was 19,223,000 kw.-hr. or 3 kw.-hr. per ton; in 1945 it was 3.5 kw.-hr. per ton. To handle this amount of power, there are four transformer stations and one switch station in the mine. Mr. Garrabrant, the chief electrician, describes the electrical installation in this issue.

The extraction of groundwater to produce gas from coal seam gas (CSG) reservoirs has highlighted the opportunity for beneficial uses of groundwater in Australia. This paper presents an assessment of alternate groundwater modelling approaches that can be used for assessment of one beneficial use option, that of injection. This assessment examines the outcome of the use of different simulation methods on predictions of hydrodynamic behaviour.In this paper, a simplified hydraulic concept of a multi-aquifer system within the hypothetical injection field was used to investigate the hydrodynamic behaviour of injection into the Precipice Sandstone. Comparisons were made through the analysis of a Theis 3D analytical solution with 2D and 3D numerical solutions. The paper discusses the different solution methods and the impact of these on predictions of pressure and flux. Differences in 2D and 3D solutions result in implications if planning injection as a beneficial use of water. For example, the 2D solution resulted in faster and higher injection pressure build-up when compared to the 3D solutions. The 2D modelling could result in either plans that require higher capital expenditure for a greater number of wells in order to spread the pressure effect and remain below the maximum injection pressure or a reduced injection rate. Meanwhile, the 3D modelling with sensitivity analysis could result in planning for lower capital expenditure for fewer wells required to spread the pressure effect and remain below the maximum injection pressure. This work illustrates the potential of two welding processes for joining AA1100-16 vol.% B4C metal matrix composite: laser welding process using a 4 kW Nd:YAG laser and Friction Stir Welding. A comparison is made between these two welding techniques in terms of microstructure and mechanical properties of welded joints. A large amount of brittle needle-like phases, together with some residues of B4C particles were observed in the fusion zone of laser welded joints. The use of Ti filler can improve the microstructure and increase the joint efficiency from 63% to 75%. On the other hand, the friction stir welding process being a solid state welding technique is interesting as it avoids the formation of brittle intermetallic phases. In addition, the breakage of B4C particles and the grain refinement of the matrix were observed in the weld zone. Consequently, FSW joints show much better mechanical properties than laser welded joints. Up to 100% joint efficiency can be achieved by FSW for annealed AA1100-16 vol.% B4C materials.
