Carbonate-hosted massive sulfide ores of the American cordillera compose a distinctive genetic class. Discordant fea-tures of occurrence together with measured high-temperatures of formation indicate their essential epigenetic character and close spatial association with centers of thermal activity during evolution of the cordillera. Their metallogenic character is complex from region to region: Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag, Pb-Zn-Ag, and Cu-Zn-Ag-Au represent extremes of composition and each may be identified with specific terranes of occurrence, notwithstand-ing an inferred common process of formation. Beyond the presence of a thermal center, other controls that may be identi-fied include apparent but obscure properties of primary perme-ability or chemistry of hosting strata, and secondary controls are imposed by stratigraphic differences in which permeability is strongly contrasted. Structures that act as channelways may be identified in some instances. Notwithstanding their intrinsic value, search for these ores is difficult and requires the solution of complex geochemical and three-dimensional geometric problems.

A proposal for a modified in situ leaching method for extracting gold from oxidized gold ores using a non-cyanide lixiviant is described. A non-cyanide lixiviant is suggested because of the obvious concerns posed by injecting cyanide-bearing solutions into the subsurface. Oxidized gold ores were chosen as a focus because earlier research on the use of sodium thiosulfate as a lixiviant under anaerobic conditions indicated that the presence of pyrite led to rapid thiosulfate breakdown. A reconnaissance research program involving ore characterization and hydrometallurgical test work on samples from four Australian ore deposits and preliminary reactive transport modeling studies was carried out. This work showed that lixiviant-oxidant combinations of sodium thiosulfate and ferric EDTA and iodide and iodine are both capable of extracting high percentages of accessible gold from the selected samples in bottle roll tests under anaerobic conditions. The ore characterization and reactive transport studies suggested that both physical and chemical methods of permeability enhancement may be required to lift bulk permeability and the availability of gold for dissolution to sufficiently high levels to obtain adequate gold recoveries. Assuming that such methods prove to be both necessary and economically viable, the mining method would no longer be regarded as simple in situ leaching. Therefore, the term ?in-place leaching? has been adopted for the proposed gold extraction system.

Deposits of iron are widely scattered in the folded Cretaceous rocks and the associated igneous intrusives of Puerto Rico. Most of them are too small for commercial development, but a few have aroused some scientific and economic interest, among them the large body of residual limonite at the west end of the island near Mayagüezl-6 (Fig. 1) and the mixed hematite and magnetite deposit on the southern slopes of the Sierra de Cayey, about four miles north of Arroyo.7"9 Neither of these orebodies has been developed, nor have investigations of the widely distributed deposits of magnetite, which include all the remaining occurrences of iron deserving of economic consideration, proceeded beyond the exploratory stage. La presente investigación señala la relación entre el factor tiempo-concentración y la silicosis, a partir de los resultados obtenidos por la sección Ingeniería en su estudio de ambiente de trabajo con los hallazgos del examen realizado a los obreros en un yacimiento minera del sur peruano. Para dicha correlación, se consideró únicamente el subsuelo y el personal que lo labora, excluyendo todo lo relacionado con la superficie, a fin de no diluir la tasa de prevalencia de silicosis y por la diferencia que existe en el medio ambiente del trabajo de cada trabajador. La minera se encuentra a 4600 m.s.n.m y está compuesta por rocas volcánicas terciarias y metamórficas, donde la ventilación es de tipo natural, la extracción del mineral se efectúa por el nivel inferior mediante una locomotora y el personal minero carece de implementos de protección personal. De acuerdo a la exposición de polvo, concentración, contenido de sílice libre y datos de la minera, se concluyó que la tasa de prevalencia de la silicosis fue de 11% y estuvo asociada directamente a la exposición de polvo por ocupaciones y tiempo de trabajo.Por tanto, es necesario crear un programa de prevención de silicosis, donde se instale un sistema de tuberías de agua para la perforación en húmedo, se reduzca la jornada laboral a ocho horas, se emplee atomizadores de agua después de los disparos, efectuando las operaciones de cargo mineral en estado húmedo y por último, se realice un examen periódico a los trabajadores.

The manganese removal from aqueous solution containing high Mn2+ concentration by adsorption and oxidation was studied using manganese oxide particles as the adsorbent. The operating parameters including pH, flow rate, initial manganese concentrations, and oxidant dosage affect the performance of Mn2+ removal were evaluated in a laboratory packed column. In the multi-column adsorption tests, each additional column doubled the time for complete manganese removal. No further decrease of pH was also observed once it was lowered to pH 4.5 to 5. This finding implied the possibility of complete high manganese removal without further pH adjustment during adsorption. Oxidation of Mn2+ by dissolved oxygen was found to be insignificant for manganese removal for high Mn2+ concentration. Adsorption was the predominated mechanism involved with manganese removal. Extremely low H+/Mn2+ stoichiometry compared to the reported values was measured. These low values suggested that different adsorption mechanisms such as chemisorption other than H+/Mn2+ ion exchange might play an important role at low pH. This paper presents the quantity and explanation of the results obtained for the mechanism of adsorption and oxidation of high concentration manganese on the manganese ore particles.

"In today's operating and investment climate, project evaluation is both more important and more difficult. It is more important because economic and financial analyses of a proposed project provide a basis for judgment of a project's commercial viability by equity participants, lenders and, in some cases, other participants such as off takers and governments. It is more difficult because these analyses must, of necessity, be based on estimates, projections and evaluations which must be made in a period remarkable for its economic and political uncertainty.Project evaluation starts with the analysis of the engineering, commercial and financial information available. Beginning with the preliminary design and capital cost estimates, alternative financing plans can be developed outlining possible sources of funds, terms and security arrangements. Pro-forma financial statements can also be developed, including sources and uses of funds, cash flow schedules, income statements and balance sheets. With these results, various profitability measures can be determined.Subsequently, in an effort to deal with uncertainty, these results can be tested by measuring the impact on project viability and profitability of changes in project and external variables such as product process, mining and processing rates, operating and financing costs, currency exchange rates and other factors.The results are a number of financial projections reflecting different assumptions for key project parameters. The projections can be used to structure the project to achieve the maximum financial performance. Projects, the financial viability and profitability of which can be demonstrated under varying market conditions, will be the most competitive in capital markets."

"The Shangri-La hotel and luxury condominium tower, recently opened on University Avenue in downtown Toronto, required eight levels of underground structure, four extending into the shale bedrock.Isherwood Geostructural Engineers was retained in 2007 by Anchor Shoring Limited to provide an alternative design-build solution to better address serious foundation risks. The site, bounded on three sides by City streets, abuts an existing 1957 14-storey building with five underground levels to the north. Sitting on the rock surface along the east perimeter under University Avenue runs the existing Toronto Transit Commission’s University Subway Line built by cut-and-cover in the 1950’s and which was believed to lie very near the property boundary at the southeast corner of the site.The bedrock under Toronto is known to contain very high locked-in horizontal stresses, much higher than can be resisted by shoring techniques, which result in inevitable wall movement when excavating deep into the rock. The strategy adopted to control the risk to the Subway, adjacent building, and major utilities is described in the paper, along with the comprehensive monitoring of movements, and their comparison to predictions.The ProjectThe 66-storey Shangri-La hotel and luxury condominium tower, recently constructed on University Avenue in downtown Toronto, houses 222 hotel rooms in floors 1-17; 287 residences on floors 18-49; and private estates including two 2-storey penthouses on floors 50-66. These comprise 873,000 square feet of development. Eight levels of underground basement are required to provide parking and other amenities, the lower four extending into the shale bedrock."

In the details, this paper has the aim to present the excellent results obtained by integrated steel plant where an EAF is fed with high quality hot ENERGIRON DRI. The recent technology developments, combined with the affirmed basic process design, contributed to further maximize the energy of the DRI, reaching the EAF at temperatures above 600°C with a carbon content up to 3.5%, as confirmed by plant data. These improved input material characteristics resulted in reduced electrical energy consumption and increased liquid steel production.

IN the last few years, much study has been devoted to increasing stoping efficiency. The reasons for this are shortage of manpower, shorter working hours, operating regulations, and shortages of essential materials. More efficiency in mining methods is needed to offset these adverse factors. In the past, attention has been centred upon haulage, hoisting equipment, mill flow-sheets, etc., but recently the spotlight has been focused on the cost of stoping and the cost of handling materials. Scrapers and scraper hoists have thus assumed greater importance. In order to make it possible for certain orebodies to be mined at a profit, it has been necessary to apply assembly-line practices to the streamlining of mining methods. All cycles of the mining operation must balance, and the sooner broken ore is removed from the working face, the sooner another round can be started. Since the introduction of scraper hoists in metal mines more than thirty years ago, much progress has been made in their design and application. Alert operators are now constantly watching for methods in which to apply scrapers. The saving of manpower in development work and the changing of mining methods that once employed manual handling of materials are increasing vital wartime tonnages. Essential ores from newly discovered orebodies are moving rapidly from stopes to reduction plants-because it is now possible to develop an orebody and place it in production with a minimum of manpower and development work. Today, speed is one of the prime essentials o mining. Everywhere, there is a concentrated effort to use experienced miners in breaking rock, in timbering, and in carrying out the various phases of mining that require many months of training. Much effort is being made to mechanize the working places because experienced men naturally prefer to work where the majority of materials are handled mechanically. In line with this policy, many new men are being taught the details of scraper work, because even green men can quickly become acquainted with scrapers and thereby release older heads to perform the more skilled phases of mining.

"SUMMARY Injection grouting in rock around tunnels is used to reduce or stop water inflow. Little is known about the distribution of pressure within the rock mass during and after grouting. Instrumentation was developed to record pressure at the back of the packers inside the rock mass during injection grouting in order to improve our understanding of the process. Using this equipment measurements inside multiple injection holes during injection pumping have been made during several rounds of injection grouting in a tunnel. The data has been compared to the data recorded on the grout pumping rig and analysed to gain an understanding of the behaviour of grout injection process in the rock mass. The initial results are reported in this paper. INTRODUCTION Construction of a tunnel in soil or rock below the ground water table frequently results in the flow of ground water into the tunnel if the ground is permeable or fractures conductive. The injection of cement or chemical based grouts is frequently used during tunnel construction to reduce flow of water into a tunnel. Significant water flow into a tunnel is undesirable for several reasons: • there is a high cost in pumping out water over the lifetime of a tunnel; • drips and flows of water have to be diverted from the roadway or track; • where freezing conditions occur there is the possibility of ice build up and; • ground water levels may be changed possibly affecting surface water such as causing drainage of lakes and ponds, and changes in vegetation. Grout injection is most effectively done ahead of excavation to ensure that the grout penetrates the ground. Where heavy flows of water already occur into a tunnel the grout may be washed out before it sets. Normal practice in ground where water flows are encountered is to inject grout in a number of long holes ahead of the face with outer holes forming a ring around the proposed tunnel excavation – eventually forming a shield of grouted rock around the final tunnel, Figure 1. The holes may be sealed off a couple of metres into the rock with an expandable rubber plug around a pipe through which the grout can be injected, Figure 2. A one-way valve in the plug stops the grout from flowing back out of the hole when pumping stops and avoids grout flowing out through neighbouring holes. The rubber packer with a one-way valve permanently installed in the injection hole precludes the measurement of pressure down the hole when pumping is stopped."

The D bolt is not only able to accommodate large rock deformations, but can also provide a load-bearing capacity as high as that of rebar bolts. The St. John Del Rey Mining Company, Limited, is an English company owning 150 square miles -of mining lands near Belo Horizonte, Minas Geraes, Brazil. The area is 2,300 to 5,000 feet above sea level, with a pleasant and healthy climate. Bedrock is Precambrian. The Nova Lima series of metamorphosed sediments and some volcanics is overlain uncomfortably by the Minas series of quartzites, itabirites. etc. Batholithic granite and gneiss cut both series and basic dykes cut all these rocks. There are important deposits of gold, iron, and manganese on the Company's holdings, as well as occurrences of arsenic, antimony, cobalt, nickel, dolomite, day, quartz, -ochre, bauxite, kyanite, and asbestos. Except for gold and consequent recovery of arsenic, all the other materials are relatively unexploited. The Company operates the Morro Velho gold mine and the Espirito Santo and Raposos gold mine. The Morro Velho mine was purchased in 1834 for £56,000. To the end of 1952 it had produced 7,000,000 troy ounces of gold from 15,000,000 short tons of ore. The ore z?ones are replacement deposits in a sinuous siliceous dolomitic rock locally termed "lapa seca," and plunge east, near surface at 45 °, at 8,000 feet at 15°. The ore minerals are pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. Gold is finely distributed and almost nowhere visible. Ore reserves at the end of 1952 were estimated at 5.5 million short tons grading 0.39 oz. gold per ton. Chances exist for new ore within the mine area. The Espirito Santo and Reposos mine, in folded banded iron formation, has mineralization similar to Morro Velho but sulphides are less abundant. The mine to a depth of 2,500 feet has estimated ore reserves of 1.5 million tons of an average grade of 0.28 oz. gold per ton. New ore may be expected both laterally and at depth. To the end -of 1952, the ?Company had paid dividends of almost £4,- 600,000, largely earned from the operation of the gold mines.

Metal mining at great depths presents a number of serious challenges for mine operators. Among them is the high demand for fresh air required to cool down mine openings, evacuate noxious gases and contaminants and provide sufficient amounts of oxygen for miners. At the same time, modern mechanized mines extensively use diesel-powered load-haul-dump (LHD) machines, trucks and other mobile equipment. These vehicles not only emit exhaust gases and diesel particulate matter (DPM), but constitute an additional source of heat. As mine regulations get steadily more stringent with regard to air quality, the use of diesel engines has an additional adverse impact on ventilation costs. In this context, the present paper examines possible alternatives for diesel power trains, both those commercially available and those in development. They are reviewed with regard to their principles, required infrastructure, stage of technology development and progress. The questions of their flexibility, practicality and economic viability are also addressed. Finally, their possible benefits and potential for implementation in the conditions of deep metal mines are discussed. The paper concludes with short- to medium-term predictions concerning promising drive alternatives for vehicles destined to operate in deep metal mines.

TUBES may be produced by a large number of forming processes, the most common of which will be discussed analytically in this paper. In no case will the stress analysis for any given tube producing process be derived formally for where such analyses are available, they may be referred to readily. Rather, emphasis will be placed on the interpretation of the theory of the different processes, few of which are developed to a state that will allow rigorous mathematical analyses, in an attempt to give a rational description of the effects of the different variables involved in each method. Tube producing methods can be divided into two groups: Those used to form shells, and those used to further work these shells into a shape more suitable for their final use. Among the first group are included roll piercing, extrusion and cupping for seamless shells, and bending with welding for welded tubes. The re-forming processes include sinking, drawing with a plug, and drawing with a rod. Only the plastic forming operations will be discussed here; other forming processes such as casting shells will not be considered. PRODUCTION OF SHELLS Shells for Seamless Tubing Piercing: The extremely important process of forming an axial hole in a billet by oblique rolling never has been analyzed satisfactorily, although a certain amount of experimental work relating to this process has been conducted. There are a number of factors that make piercing difficult to analyze; one of these is the fact that piercing is not a problem in plasticity, but one in fracturing, and the laws of fracturing are even less well understood than those of plasticity. If, however, it is assumed that fracturing occurs on a surface as a result of tensile stresses acting normal to this surface, piercing can be analyzed qualitatively by examining the stresses established in the oblique rolling process. To determine the origin of the tensile stresses that are thought to effect piercing, it will be necessary to know the angular relationships between the maximum stresses that are established in piercing. These angles quite frequently can be determined in a plastic deformation process by an examination of the deformed product. For example, consider the stresses established when a tensile test is conducted on a rectangular cross-sectional specimen of pearlitic steel. When stretched, this material first flows plastically, exhibiting the well-known yield jog on a stress-strain curve. The formation of the slip areas that give rise to the yield jog can be detected during the straining, since these flowed areas cause depressions on the specimen surfaces which can be seen if the surfaces are polished highly. The plastically strained areas also can be found after the specimen has been stretched to a strain not exceeding the yield jog, by sectioning the test piece and. etching these sections with Fry's etch. In preparing this paper, an attempt was made to obtain results of plant-scale carbonization tests on washed and unwashed coal from the same mine. A letter. in which the following questions were asked was sent to some 50 coke-oven superintendents and others who might be interested; "What is the influence of washing coal on: (1) The chemical and physical properties of coke, as for example, the size the amount of breeze, the fracture, strength, cell-structure, etc. (2) The quantity and quality of gas and by-products. The Hurtières Tunnel was built in 1995 with drill and blast method, in metamorphic schist. It is located between Lyon and Torino on the A 43 motorway in the French Alps. During the construction, a geological hazard was encountered, which caused a massive ground collapse. The tunnel was filled up with 3,000 m3of glacial materials. Geological investigations realized after the accident showed that a narrow glacial valley was present at this location the water table was 40 m above the tunnel level. The paper will describe the collapse and the remedial methods which were implemented to proceed through the failure area. These included drainage works,2,000 m3 grouting and 6,200 ml jet grouting columns.

In general, the art of securing copper from sulphide ores or concentrates may be said to consist of : (1) separation, in the molten state, of copper sulphide with some iron sulphide, from the great bulk of gangue-material, followed by (2) elimination of sulphur and iron from the molten matte, by oxidation and fluxing, leaving metallic copper. The definition is made broad enough to cover the general practice, whether or not the ore or concentrate is given a preliminary roast for the removal of surplus sulphur. The above process, which I will designate as the smelting process, makes necessary the presence in the ore, or the addition thereto, of such silica, lime, and iron as may be necessary for the formation of a light and fusible slag, together with sufficient sulphur and iron for the formation of copper-matte, and also the addition to the matte of sufficient silica for the oxidation and fluxing-out of the iron. These items, together with the cost of fuel sufficient for melting the mass, constitute important items of cost in the copper-smelting process. Numerous cases where fluxing-materials are scarce or dear, or where fuel is expensive, have caused special attention to be given recently to the wet process of copper-extraction, which may be designated as consisting of forming soluble copper salts which are then washed or leached out of the ore or concentrates by dissolving in water or acid. Nowadays nearly the half of the world zinc production is used for galvanizing. After their life span most of the galvanized products return as scrap to the steel mill. During the steel process the zinc is collected in the flue dust It is astonishing to notice that between 40 and 50 % of the zinc produced is brought into the steel processing cycle by the coated scrap while only 3 to 5 % of the zinc production can be covered by the recycling of the zinc-bearing steel mill dusts. Responsible for this worse ratio is the fact that the established recycling technologies suffer from high energy consumption, low zinc yields, halogen problems and hardly any iron recovery. A development of new or an optimization of current recycling procedures for the dusts is unalterable because of increasing zinc amounts in these residues and the rising costs for the disposal. Different pyrometallurgical recycling technologies are tested in rotary kilns and vertical retorts at the Department of Nonferrous Metallurgy, University of Leoben, Austria. Various reducing agents from carbon monoxide to hydrogen and combinations are used. The results should make it possible to draw conclusions that allow an economical and ecological judgement of the different varieties. The goal is to support the affected industry to increase the low recycling rate and prevent a loss of high zinc values in the steel industry filter dusts.
