The first step in determining whether Mn can be recovered by in situ leaching is to develop and test a selective lixiviant. Two column leach tests and one core leach test Were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on Mn oxide ore using aqueous sulfur dioxide (SO2) as the lixiviant. The column tests showed that aqueous S02 could selectively dissolve available Mn oxides from calcite-rich ore in a heap leach system. However, the core test showed that calcite gangue side reactions can have pronounced negative effects on the likelihood of successful in situ leaching of a calcite-rich ore with aqueous S02. Petrographic and geochemical analyses showed that both Mn (IV, III) oxides and calcite were dissolved. The abundance of dissolved Ca caused precipitation of gypsum. Acid consumption by calcite dissolution caused a rise in pH that caused the SO/S species to shift to S032-(sulfIte), which hindered reductive dissolution of Mn oxide. Gypsum precipitation did not affect complete leaching of the rock fragments in the column tests; however, it plugged the natural permeability in the core. Manganese recoveries were high for the column tests and low for the core test.

The Sc-Y and Sc-Zr systems were studied by thermal and X-ray methods. Both systems are characterized by complete solid solubility in the low temperature hexagonal form and in the high temperature bcc form. In the Sc-Y system, there is a minimum in the solidus at 50 at. pct and 1365°C, while the solidus in the Sc-Zr system follows a nearly straight line relationship between the melting point of scandium and zirconium. There is a minimum in the temperature of transition from hexagonal to bcc in the Sc-Y system at 43 at. pct Y and 1175°C; while the temperature of transition is raised in the Sc-Zr system to a maximum of 1415 °C at 30 at. pct Zr. INTEREST in the metals of the first transition series has usually stemmed from their useful properties; however, there is now a great deal of interest in determining the fundamental nature of these metals. Since scandium is the first of these transition metals, a study of the preparation and Properties1 and the alloying behavior of scandium2 was initiated. In a continuing study of the alloying behavior of scandium, the systems of scandium with zirconium and yttrium have been established. Extensive solid solubility in both the Sc-Zr and Sc-Y systems was expected from application of the classical rules of Hume-Rothery. Also, the modified Darken and Gurry plot as suggested by Gschneid-ner3 showed ideal conditions for solubility in the Sc-Zr system with less favorable conditions in the Sc-Y system. The effect of scandium on the transformation temperature of zirconium and yttrium was of interest, since a recent empirical observation by Uly and Burr4 predicted that the solute scandium would raise the transformation temperature of zirconium and lower the yttrium transformation. In addition to noting the validity of the above predictions, the SC-Y and Sc-Zr systems were established. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Materials. The metals employed in this investigation were crystal bar zirconium, distilled scandium prepared by the method described by Spedding, et al.1 and yttrium prepared by the method described by Carlson, et a1.5 The major impurities present in these metals are listed in Table I in ppm. Alloy Preparation. All the alloys examined were initially formed by comelting the two metals in a nonconsumable electrode arc-melting furnace under an atmosphere of purified helium or argon. The buttons were inverted at least five times and re-melted each time to ensure homogeneity. During preparation of Sc-Zr alloys, approximately 1 wt pct was lost which was attributed entirely to the loss of scandium by distillation. When preparing Sc-Y alloys, approximately 1.5 wt pct was lost, but it was assumed that the intended composition was maintained, since the relative weight lost when arc melting the component metals was nearly the same. Samples weighing 15 to 20 g were prepared for time-temperature thermal analysis, while only 1- to 2-g samples were prepared for the optical pyrometer and X-ray diffraction studies. Thermal Methods. The solidus and the melting points of the metals were determined by an optical pyrometer method described previously.2 The temperatures at which the transformation from hexagonal to bcc occurs were determined by differential thermal analysis. Several points on the solidus and liquidus in the Sc-Y system were also determined by this method and are in good agreement with those obtained by the optical pyrometer method. The procedure followed in the preparation of samples for thermal analysis and the furnace used have been described elsewhere.2'6 Since a limited quantity of scandium was available, most of the alloys were not melted during thermal analysis, thus avoiding contamination by the crucible. The alloy could then be reused and the composition changed by adding the desired quantity of solute to obtain the next alloy. Heat Treatment and X-Ray Methods. In order to ensure homogeneity, the "as arc-melted" alloys Were wrapped in tantalum foil, sealed in quartz capsules and heated at 1100°C for 15 hr and then cooled at a rate of 8 deg per min. Telerobotics focused on mining is currently being introduced into production systems around the world. Mining companies in Canada, Sweden, South Africa and Australia have tended to lead the international charge to this form of technology for mining. While this introduction is taking place a few basic questions have yet to be answered. How many machines can a single operator run? How many types of machines can a single operator run? A new Canadian Research Chair in Robotics and Mine Automation has been established at Laurentian University. This chair will investigate these questions and many more through a series of experiments in a newly established telerobotics laboratory that connects Laurentian teleoperation workstations to model mining machines at Cambrian college?s eDome. The laboratory will support many experiments allowing researchers to physically run multiple robot scenarios differing the numbers and types of machines at one/quarter scale. Further experiments are being designed to investigate the potential for managing time delays in telerobotics. This paper describes the laboratory, experiments and some preliminary results.

Energy & Densification Systems (EDS) has developed patented new technology crushing/milling equipment. The EDS Multishaft Mill is a compact vertical mill – utilising high-speed impacts to break down particles with large reduction ratios, low energy consumption and improved liberation. The milling action combines several processes to provide a multitude of output products to satisfy various specifications. Comminution often accounts for more than 60% of the total power consumption on a mine. Two of the key problems to be solved in comminution is to bring down the specific energy required to reduce particle sizes; and to improve liberation or improve the efficiency of the beneficiation and recovery of the required elements. The EDS Mill has shown extensive improvements in both these areas with energy efficiencies up to 75% better than conventional milling equipment and improving liberation beyond the standard beneficiation processes. Conventional comminution equipment requires massive, heavy parts to be moved or rotated, consuming a lot of energy in doing so and not inputting that energy into the breakage of particles. In the EDS Mill, ramping up the relatively small shafts to speed is all that is required. Once at speed, the momentum, together with the minimal amount of constant drive required, means that the energy can be transmitted directly and efficiently into breaking down the particles. The high-speed impacts allow for a shattering effect of the particles and this quickly generates a high ratio of fines. Furthermore, the single impact force breaks particles in a very different manner to conventional compressive force breakage. With compressive force breakage, the particle breaks from point to point. With high-speed impact force breakage, the force tends to migrate through the weakest areas of the particle, which tend to be the mineral boundaries. This, therefore, means that when the particles break, the various minerals are exposed and hence liberated. Keywords: Comminution, high-speed impact, liberation, energy efficiency, novel comminution

This paper describing the dredging operation of J. K. Davison & Bro. on the Allegheny River near Pittsburgh, Pa., is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of dredging sand and gravel in the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. Two innovative ground reinforcement products have been developed for use in the mining industry. One of these products is a high strength polyethylene (HOPE) bar for use as a rib bolt in underground coal mining and as a corrosion proof tendon in open pit mines. The other product is a cable bolt (Ultrastrand) which demonstrates enhanced load transfer and is available in continuous lengths. Ultrastrand's exceptional in- situ performance and versatility makes it ideal for mechanised installation in both underground and surface mining operations. Details of these products are presented and results from labortaory and field trials are discussed.

An investigation, conducted by the author, was begun in September, 1889, by the United States Geological Survey, having for its object the study of the questions bearing upon the occurrence and manner of formation of the deposits of lead- and zinc-ores in Missouri and the adjoining States. The field-work was completed in December, 1891. During the first season the State Geological Survey of Missouri furnished an assistant, and in other ways co-operated in the research within the boundaries of that State. In order that the ore-deposits of the southwest might be compared with those of other sections of the Mississippi valley, an examination was made of the lead- and zinc-mining area of Wisconsin-Iowa, and of the argentiferous lead-mines of the region extending westward from Hot Springs, Arkansas, to Indian Territory. In the discussion of the general geology, and in comparisons between the ore-deposits of the Mississippi valley and those of the Rocky Mountains, the writer has drawn largely from his personal experience, having been engaged for many years in professional work as a geologist and mining engineer in that region. The Director of the U. S. Geological Survey and the Scate Geologist of Missouri have kindly consented to the publication of the present paper. While giving the more important economic results, an endeavor has been made to set forth the unity of plan which appears in the formation of the deposits of lead and zinc of the Mississippi basin, and to show their relation to the argentiferous ores of the Rocky Mountains—that the ores of gold, silver, and mercury, and also of copper, antimony, zinc, and lead, have a universal common origin, irrespective of the geological formations in which they occur.

[This paper presents one of a series of digests of foreign mining legislation and court decisions which is being prepared in advance of a general report relative to the rights of American citizens to explore for minerals and to own and operate mines in various foreign countries. This interpretation of the mining laws of specified French possessions in Africa has been prepared from the best information available in Washington, but is released subject to correction and amplification, if necessary, by the proper American diplomatic and consular officers, to whom it is being referred through the courtesy of the Department of State. France controls large areas on the African continent, but the various Colonies and Dependencies are administered more or less independently. Algeria is under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of the Interior, and its mining laws are essentially the same as those of the mother country. Tunis and Morocco are attached to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; separate digests of the mining laws' of these respective colonies have already been prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The present paper covers all other French territory on the continent of Africa except Somaliland, a rather small Colony including the port of Djibouti near the point where the Red Sea joins the Gulf of Aden. Available information indicates that the prospects of mineral production in this Colony, apart from salt and gypsum, are not at all encouraging.3]

The creep behavior of an aluminum alloy hardened with a finely dispersed phase of aluminum oxide was investigated. The as-extruded alloy shows an approximate steady-state creep in which the creed rate depends exponentially on the applied stress. The activation energy of creeb is abbroximately 150,000 cal per mole. The recrystallized alloy shows no steady-state creep. ONE method of improving the creep resistance of a metal is to introduce a finely dispersed second phase into the metal matrix. The improvement of the creep resistance has been qualitatively explained by assuming that the dispersed second-phase particles act as obstacles to dislocation motion. If the main effect of second-phase particles is simply to hinder dislocation motion then it is possible to derive a high-temperature creep equation for a dispersion-hardened alloy in a straightforward manner. In the Appendix of this paper such an equation is derived from a creep model which works very well for pure metals. Recently, F. V. Lenel has fabricated, for the first time, powder extrusions of aluminum-aluminum oxide in a large-grained recrystallized form. This alloy, designated as MD 2100, consists of a fine dispersion of aluminum oxide plates in a matrix of commercial purity aluminum. A considerable amount of investigation has been carried out concerning the microstructure and physical properties of this alloy.&apos; ) The aluminum oxide is present in the form of flakes 130A units thick and 0.3 u on edge. They are dispersed in the aluminum matrix with an average spacing of approximately 0.5 jx. The spacing varies in the range of 0.05 to 1.5 µ. The alloy structure is extremely stable at high temperatures. For this reason the alloy offers a unique opportunity for a fundamental study of creep of a very finely dispersed two-phase alloy. Lenel supplied specimens in both the unrecrystallized and recrystallized condition. This paper reports high-temperature creep experiments carried out on these specimens. The results obtained were rather unexpected. No steady-state creep was observed in the recrys-tallized material. In fact, after some transient creep which takes place upon loading, the creep rate is essentially zero ( < 10-8per min). If the second-phase particles acted solely as obstacles to the motion of dislocations, measurable steady-state creep would be expected. Since none is observed it appears that the main effect of the fine dispersion in the recrystallized material is to inactivate the dislocation sources themselves, rather than hinder the motion of dislocation loops created at these sources. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Specimens were tested in wire form, 0.087 in. in diam for the as-extruded alloy, and 0.035 in. in diam for the recrystallized alloy. These samples were held in friction-type wire grips; a gage length of 2.5 cm was used for all the creep tests. The specimens were held at 600°C in the test apparatus for at least 15 hr prior to each test. The tests were run under the condition of constant loading and, since the creep strains were small, can be considered as constant stress tests. The temperature of testing was held constant within 3°C. Elongations were measured with an optical cathetometer which was capable of measuring strains as smaIl as 0.00012. This allowed the measurement of strain rates as low as l0-8&apos;per rnin. In addition to the creep tests optical micrographs were made in order to determine both the grain size and microstructure of these materials. RESULTS Fig. 1 shows a few typical creep curves obtained from the as-extruded material. The elongations were somewhat erratic, but each curve shows a region of quasi-steady-state creep from which an approximate steady-state creep rate can be obtained. In general the higher the stress at a given temperature, the greater the total elongation before fracture. The lower the applied stress, the longer is the region where the creep rate is almost constant. Summary data from the creep tests of the as-extruded material are listed in Table I. The steady-state creep data of the as-extruded material for a range of stresses at a constant temperature follow a creep equation of the type creep rate = K&apos; = A exp (&) [11 where A and B are constants, k is Boltzmann&apos;s constant, T is the absolute temperature, and a the stress. The standard error of estimate of the data received is less than one order of magnitude. As shown in Fig. 2, if one compensates the creep-rate data for the effect of temperature over the range of test temperature, the steady-state creep data roughly follow a creep equation of the type Temperature compensated creep rate = K* = A exp

Activities of oxides in the ternary FeO-MnO-SiO system are calculated from data on the binaries, using the Gibbs -Schuhmann method. These activity data are used, together with thermodynamic relations, to calculate the contents of oxygen, silicon, and manganese in liquid iron, and the composition of the corresponding oxide phases in equilibrium with it. Excellent agreement was found between calculated and experimental metal compositions, indicating that thermodynamic methods, such as those presented, can supply useful data on slag-metal equilibria, and are therefore capable of wider application. When molten steel containing oxygen is treated with a deoxidizer, the product of the reaction is composed of the oxides of the deoxidizing elements together with more or less iron oxide. This assemblage of oxides is presumably very close to equilibrium with the melt since it is formed directly from elements dissolved in it. Therefore, it is likely that metal analyses corresponding to a given oxide phase composition are calculable with considerable precision where sufficient information is available on activities in both phases. The present study was made to test this hypothesis in the case of deoxidation by silicon and manganese. Here experimental data on the relationship among oxygen, silicon, and manganese in the metal phase are available, as are activity data for the MnO-SiO2, FeO-SiO2, and FeO-MnO binary systems. A further objective was to demonstrate in a specific example how gaps in the data may be filled by judicious interpolation, and how the Gibbs-Schuhmann method is applied to obtain activities in ternary systems. The rigorous derivation of the latter, requiring considerable facility in handling partial differential equations, tends to mask the real simplicity of the method, and repel the very engineers and experimenters who would benefit the most from its use. I) GENERAL PROCEDURE Deoxidation of steel with silicon and manganese results in the formation of two phases, metal and oxide. The number of components is four—Fe, Mn, Si, and 0. The phase rule then gives the number of degrees of freedom: If temperature and pressure are fixed, 2 deg of freedom remain. Consequently, it suffices to fix the concentration of two of the components of the system for all the concentrations to be determined and, at least in principle, calculable. The practical problem is then to discover a straightforward method of calculation with a minimum of trial and error solutions. The type of reactions to be dealt with are like the following: Si (in steel) + 2 O(in steel) = SiO2(in oxide phase) The standard free energy of this reaction is readily obtained from the literature, so that the equilibrium constant can be calculated by the expression: Since the metallurgist is concerned with percentages rather than activities, a real solution requires information that will permit activities to be converted to concentrations. This information is fairly adequate for the elements dissolved in molten steel, but is not available for the FeO-MnO-SiO2 oxide system. Therefore, the first step in this study was to find the relation between activity and concentration for the three oxides making up the system. The next step was the calculation of slag and metal compositions that are in equilibrium with one another. As shown by the phase rule, it is sufficient to assume the values of two composition variables in order to calculate the rest. But which two are picked makes a vast difference in how difficult the calculation turns out to be, so that it is necessary to make preliminary trial of several routes to find the easiest one. A convenient method is to begin with the slag, and to pick FeO concentration and that of one of the other oxides. Starting with the relation between oxygen dissolved in the liquid steel and FeO in the slag permits a good first estimate to be made of the oxygen content of the steel in equilibrium with FeO, because the iron content being fairly close to 100 pct, Fe has an activity close to unity. Using this first estimate of oxygen activity, approximate values of the manganese and silicon contents of the melt are readily calculated from the appropriate equilibrium constants. During 1966, crushed stone production in the United States totaled just over 811 million tons valued at almost $1.2 billion. This represented in- creases of 4 % in tonnage and 5 % in value over that for 1965. Excluding the crushed stone used for agricultural and certain industrial purposes (cement, lime and flux), crushed stone mineral aggregate production totaled 616.3 million tons valued at almost $910 million, also up roughly 4% in tonnage and 5% in value over the 1965 figures. Limestone was by far the most widely used rock variety, followed by basalt, granite and sandstone in that order. Concrete aggregate and roadstone continued as the main uses for stone, accounting for 63% of all tonnage produced in 1966 and 60% of total stone value. Sand and gravel production in 1966 increased 3% over that for 1965. Total 1966 output was just in excess of 934 million tons valued at almost $985 million as compared with 908 million tons at $957 million for the previous year. Excluding the higher valued industrial sands, 903.2 million tons of sand and gravel valued at $891.6 million were used directly as mineral aggregates, representing a 2.9% increase in tonnage and a 2.4% increase in value over 1965.

During the last 25 years, technological advancement and subsidence research have resulted in more accurate and diverse prediction capabilities. The work presented in this paper focuses on the development of integrated prediction capabilities for dynamic deformation indices and for strains over sloping terrain. In order to assist subsidence engineers with accurate prediction methodologies, the research also addresses the development and validation of techniques that can enable model calibration using alternative measured subsidence parameters such as horizontal or ground strain instead of the traditional vertical subsidence values. This paper presents the basic concepts and validation of the above mentioned enhanced prediction and control methodologies, which are necessary for effective assessment and control of mining-induced subsidence, using examples and case studies. In addition, a risk assessment approach for evaluating landscape stability over mined areas is presented. The enhanced prediction methodologies have been incorporated into the Surface Deformation Prediction Software (SDPS) package.

In 1960, Magnetics International Ltd. undertook the development of the Jones High Intensity Wet Magnetic Separator in the Americas. Magnetics International had a number of possible applications in its own projects plus the intention of developing the equipment for sale to others. It was soon recognized that no matter how innovative a piece of mineral separation equipment may be, it takes many years and much finance before it is finally accepted for large scale use. For this reason, many good ideas die in their infancy. One of the chief reasons for such a time lag between conception and large scale implementation is the usual lack of finance to construct and put into operation a large demonstration unit. Even with a large unit for demonstration, the first major user usually requires a guarantee that is not normal in accepted separation equipment. Such problems are also normally accompanied by major design changes from the first conception.

Built-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are designed to provide a secure space for miners who cannot escape during a mine emergency. Heat and humidity buildup within RAs may expose miners to physiological hazards such as heat stress. To minimize the risk of heat stress, Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), or 30 CFR, mandates a maximum allowable apparent temperature (AT) for an occupied RA of 35 °C (95 °F). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted extensive research on the thermal environment of occupied RAs intended for use in underground coal mines. NIOSH research has demonstrated that a fully occupied BIP RA can exceed the AT limit by more than 5.6 °C (10 °F) in mines with elevated mine strata and air temperatures. In this circumstance, an RA cooling system could provide a solution. This paper provides an overview of test methodology and findings as well as guidance on improving the performance of a cryogenic air system prototype by optimizing the flow rate, increasing the tank storage capacity, and improving the efficiency of the heat exchanger of the cryogenic system. This may enable BIP RAs to meet the 35 °C (95 °F) AT limit in mines with elevated temperatures. The information in this paper is useful for RA manufacturers and mines that may choose to implement a cryogenic air system as a heat mitigation strategy.

THE 1938 season was marked by a distinct lull in exploratory activity in the Province of Quebec. Quebec was not unique in this respect, but the condition appears to have been more acute here than in most other parts of the Dominion. Various causes may be suggested to account for this. The general disturbance in political and economic conditions throughout the world has certainly had an adverse influence. Uncertainty induced by changes in the mining laws of Quebec in 1937 contributed. A third cause was the belief, now held by many, that the easily accessible deposits in the main producing belt extending eastward from. the Rouyn district have now all been found and that new discoveries in this field will henceforth come more slowly and more expensively. A fourth is the lack of conspicuous success by companies and individuals who have interested themselves in less accessible areas to the north, notably the Chibougamau district. A fifth, the unattractive appearance, as viewed on published geological maps, of the vast area extending northward to Ungava bay and Hudson strait. A sixth, the attraction of such speculative funds as were available to the Northwest Territories, where spectacular finds were reported in the fall of 1937. Whatever may be the relative importance of these causes, languor in exploration will ultimately be reflected in production returns. This appears, therefore, to be an opportune time to take stock of the general position of the Industry in the Province and to consider ways and means of counter-acting those conditions which are now impeding, or will in the near future impede, its expansion. At the request of the Institute Secretary, Mr. Carlyle, I have prepared a brief summary of accomplishments to date and a discussion of some of the geological aspects of the problem.

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are the tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of Volume I and in the State chapters of Volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

Miami Oölite limestone is the only significant construction mineral in southeastern Florida. Its source area coincides with that of rapid urban expansion. Two-thirds of the existing resource is already unavailable because of development. Land-use conflicts place future availability of limestone in jeopardy. However, a sufficient limestone resource to meet demand for many years is present if its extraction is not restricted. Adverse environmental effects of quarrying Miami Oölite are not severe; land values often increase following quarrying. Future availability depends upon--(l) achieving uniformity of Federal, State, county, and municipality statutory requirements governing quarry operations; (2) setting aside specific land areas for future quarrying; and (3) cooperative planning to provide for land utilization upon completion of quarrying.

SLAG composition, slag constitution, reactions in slag, and reactions between slag and metal-in other words, the physical chemistry of slags-are matters of great importance to the open-hearth operator, whether or not he makes use of any detailed knowledge of them. Although this is a relatively young branch of the science of steel- making, much progress has been made; however, much remains to be learned, and many of the statements that can be made at present are probably--or even certainly-subject to future change. Nevertheless, the physical chemistry of slags is sufficiently developed to provide a reasonably secure basis for real understanding of steelmaking reactions. FUNDAMENTALS OF SLAG CONTROL By way of introduction, some time is spent in this chapter on effecting an easy transition from some of the more "practical" manifestations of slag to discussions couched in the more formal language of physical chemistry. This necessitates a certain amount of repetition, but it is felt that the purpose of the chapter is best served in this way. Reactions in the metal phase have products that find their way into the slag and are important components thereof; they are discussed in detail in the preceding chapter. Some substances distribute themselves Between slag and metal in definite fashion, and others are found only in the slag. Their reactions are a large reason for this chapter. Limitations of Slag Control. The open-hearth process is essentially oxidizing and cannot be otherwise operated. (Oxygen gradients in the furnace, the mechanism of oxygen inflow, and similar subjects are discussed in Chapter XIX.) As shown in the calculations of material and heat balances for the charge (see Chapter XV), from 25 to 50 lb. of oxygen will flow from air or combustion gases into the charge or molten bath during the heat for each ton of liquid steel

"The author will review the early history of shaft sinking as well as focus on the improvements made in shaft design and construction over the last fifty years (1970 to 2019) to predict how shaft sinking will change over the next fifty years and describe what the shaft sinking world might look like in 2070. INTRODUCTION It is a great honour to be one of your keynote speakers for the Fourth International Conference on Shaft Design and Construction being held in Toronto in November 2019. This is one of the opportunities we have to thank the Mining Companies of the world as well as the industries and companies we serve for their support of the mining contracting and shaft sinking business of Canada and the world at large. Many of these companies are represented here today. Without your support many of the innovations we will talk about today would not be possible. We would also like to thank all the companies that work with us in our business including all the contractors and suppliers who provide the various services we require. These include equipment manufacturers, engineering companies, project management companies and suppliers large and small who cater to our every need as quickly as possible. Without all these partners we would not be as good as we are. Many of these companies are our sponsors this week. Thank you from all of us! This is also an appropriate time to pause and think about those Shaft Sinkers we have lost and those who have been injured on our projects around the world. Please bow your head and remember the Shaft Sinkers you have worked with, who did not return home or those who returned home injured. Think about how we can continue the work of making shafts safer every day as we go forward with our projects so everyone goes home to their families safe and sound. Pause for a minute and thank you. The subject matter we have chosen to discuss today is “Shaft Sinking in the Next Five Decades”. How will the work be done, how fast will it be done, what will it cost, and why we think this may occur? It is appropriate to consider this over the next few days with this auspicious group we have assembled. Today, we will look back at all the advances that have been made over the last many years and look ahead to the future to attempt to predict what shaft sinking will look like in 2070. When I look around the room I recognize that many of us will not be around then so we need not worry about being wrong. Suffice it to say that the next 50 years will be very interesting and exciting for the shaft sinking business."
