This method was standardized after considerable experimentation5 on the nature of the fusion of coal ash and the various factors which affect its determination. "Tin sulfide ores and aged man-made products obtained after their processing are distinguished by a complex material composition and uneven impregnation of sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, galena, arsenopyrite, etc.) and tin ore (cassiterite). Enrichment of such ores is performed through sophisticated multistage schemes using not only gravitational methods, but also gravity flotation, flotation, magnetic separation techniques. Tin ores also contain rare and precious metals (indium, scandium, silver), characterized by fine dispersity and microscale to nanoscale fineness of mineral formations. During flotation concentration these metals are extracted along with the main ore minerals into concentrates (tin, copper, tungsten, etc.), however, up to 10-20 % of them are lost with final tailings. The aim of the work is an experimental study of the modification of the surface of sulfide minerals and cassiterite by stable metal-collector complexes to increase extraction of fine tin, silver, copper and other metals from complex tin ores. Triamide cyanuric acid (TCA) was studied as a thin silver flotation modifier. Thermophilic polymer with a functional group of phenylphosphine TMPPh was used as a selective flocculant. For experimental studies of the physical and chemical effects of collecting agents on the surface of minerals the following analytical techniques were used - the analytical scanning electron emission ASEM (LEO 1420VP INCA OXFORD ENERGY 350) and laser (KEYENCE VK-9700) microscopy, measurements of electrode potentials of mineral anthills by potentiometric titration, monomineral and pulp flotation. New data on formation of the adsorbed layer of DBDTC on the surface of chalcopyrite, galena and arsenopyrite were obtained, and the dimensions of the reagent films and the strength of their adsorption. The indiscriminateness of cassiterite to DBDTC ensures its selective separation into a chamber product during the flotation of sulfides. It is shown, that modification of the sulfide surface by stable complexes Me-DBDTC and Ag-TCA-TMPPh will increase the recovery of non-ferrous metals and silver into a collective sulfide concentrate and will provide a high-quality tin concentrate for flotation of tin sulfide ores.The studies were perfomed with the aid of the Russian Science Foundation (Project No. 17-17-01292).INTRODUCTIONTin sulfide ores and aged man-made products obtained after their processing are distinguished by a complex material composition and uneven impregnation of sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, galena, arsenopyrite, etc.) and tin ore (cassiterite). Understanding the contribution of geophysical variables is vital for identifying ore indicator regions. Both magnetometry and gamma-rays are used to identify the geophysical signatures of the rocks. Density is another key variable for tonnage estimation in mining, and needs to be re-estimated in areas of change when a boundary update has been conducted. Modelling these geophysical variables in 3D will enable investigation of the properties of the rocks and improve our understanding of the ore. The Gaussian Process (GP) was previously used to generate 3D spatial models for grade estimation using geochemical assays. This study investigates the influence of the following two factors on the GP-based autonomously generated 3D geophysical models: the resolution of the input data, and the number of nearest samples used in the training process. A case study conducted on a typical Hammersley Ranges iron ore deposit using geophysical logs, including density, collected from the exploration holes, is examined in this paper.

The abstract discusses the problem of silicosis among roof bolter operators in coal mines due to respirable quartz dust (RCS) exposure. It presents a study comparing a new wet box collection system to the traditional dry box system. The wet box system uses water to saturate collected material, reducing RCS exposure during cleaning. The study found that the wet box system significantly reduced RCS exposures and quartz content in samples compared to the dry box system.

Cyanides are present as a dilute constituent of streams from a variety of metallurgical and mineral-processing operations. In addition, a cyanide concentration in excess of approximately 100ppb is toxic to aquatic life, and consequently these operations require a waste-treatment process to reduce the already dilute cyanide species by several orders of magnitude. Furthermore, the waste streams may have flowrates in excess of a million gallons per day. The paper reports on research conducted with a laboratory?scale electrochemical porous (graphite felt) electrode (anode) flow-reactor, which was conducted in conjunction with a computer-aided simulation of a mathematical model describing the intrinsic rate-phenomena associate with the electrode processes. The laboratory-scale cell, of rectilinear geometry, was found to be capable of reducing a feed-stream anolyte (KCN-KOH and supporting electrolyte of a single salt ? K2SO4) with a cyanide concentration of 10ppm, to less than 100ppb, at current efficiencies in the neighborhood of 50%. The computer simulation of the cell performance based on the mathematical model (and constraints imposed for tractability) was found to provide only for qualitative agreement.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes State severance taxes imposed on minerals and mineral fuels, provides a hypothetical example of how a State severance tax affects selected components of a firm's income statement, and uses the Bureau's Minerals Availability System (MAS) to estimate the effect of assumed changes in State severance tax rates on copper recovery cost at given levels of potential copper availability. A reduction of the rates to zero or a doubling of them results in changes in costs that are of the same order of magnitude as the cost of transporting copper to the United States from major foreign producing countries.

NeaR the town of Christiansburg, Va., occurs a singular feature in topographical as well as geological structure, which may be said to have an important bearing on a large area to the southwest. The great water-shed ridge, which divides the waters flowing into the St. Lawrence from those flowing into the Atlantic ocean, coming southwestward, forms all of what was the boundary of Maine as agreed upon by the treaty of 1783, and a part of the present boundary, all of the northern New Hampshire boundary, and entering Vermont, continues south of Lake George. Passing irregularly through New York, it enters Pennsylvania, and there bifurcating, sends one prong to the west as a divide between the waters of the lakes and the Ohio, while the other becomes the steady, regular ridge which gave it the name of Alleghany, and thus passes on southwestward through Virginia. At no point has it ever been the geological divide. Its course, commencing in the Archean rocks, has passed through nearly every series of formation, and comes into Virginia in the Carboniferous strata. The geological divide—the line between the fossiliferous and the non-fossiliferous rocks—lies, in Canada, to the west of it, but from New York south into Virginia is far to the east. Reference to Dr. Hitchcock'k map will show this. But at the locality noted these positions are changed; the water-divide becomes the eastern chain, and the geological divide is the western, returning, it may be said, to the positions occupied in the region where they originated. A commercially available Halon 1301 extinguisher has been evaluated as part of an explosion-suppression system for use in coal mines. Studies were made both of the dispersion pattern of the Halon 1301 at an initial pressure of 280 psig, and of the efficacy of this suppressant against 9.5 percent methane-air flames. These flames were quenched successfully only when the suppressant was applied before the fireball diameter exceeded 18 inches.

"INTRODUCTION Exploration of the Iron Mountain and Bader iron-ore deposits in Llano County and the Gamble deposit in Mason County, Texas, was begun by the Bureau of Mines in January and completed in May 1944. The deposits had been examined by A. B. Needham, district engineer of the Bureau, in November 1942. Detailed geophysical studies by the gravity method as well as with a dip needle were made by the Bureau of Economic Geology 3/ of the University of Texas and the Federal Geological Survey. 4/ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn the program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy., It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploration project as soon as practicable after its completion. The precious stones rubies and sapphires are transparent varieties of the mineral corundum . Essentially they are aluminum oxide , but the aluminum is often replaced. by small amounts of chromium , titanium , or iron . The chromium is said to give a red color , titanium a blue , and iron a yellow . True rubies range from rose to a somewhat purplish red and are sometimes termed " oriental rubies " to distinguish them from spinel rubies , stones of inferior hardness , density , and value . " Oriental rubies " are very rare , and the so-called " pigeon's blood" variety is the most valuable . Sapphires normally range in color from palest blue to deepest indigo , but actually all precious varieties of corundum of any other color than red are called sapphires . The most esteemed tint is like that of the blue cornflower . Colorless corundum of gem quality is called white sapphire ; the yellow variety is described either as yellow or as golden sapphire ; and the pale pink is classed as pink sapphire . The word " oriental " is also used as a prefix in naming varieties of corumdum of less popular colors . For instance , oriental emerald is used for green corundum, oriental topaz for yellow , and oriental amethyst for violet to purple varieties . The chief physical characteristics of rubies and sapphires are hardness , adamantine luster , and moderately high specific gravity ( 3.9 to 4.1) . Next to the diamond, corundum is the hardest of all minerals ; in fact , the sapphire is number 9 on Moh's scale , ranking between the topaz and the diamond. Rubies crystallize in 6-sided prisms terminated by flat faces and other varieties of corundum with twelve inclined faces , six above and six below , meeting in a girdle . Corundum is doubly refractive , with a direction of single refraction running parallel to the edge of the prism . The refractive indexes are very constant, the ordinary index ranging from 1.766 to 1.774 and the extraordinary index from 1.757 to 1.765. The double refraction always remains the same.

The direct cyanide leaching rate of gold from a gold calcine was only 71.33%, due to 19.51% of gold being encapsulated in the iron oxides. To enhance the cyanide leaching of gold, the calcine was pretreated with acid or alkali washing. The mechanisms by which acid and alkali pretreatment improve gold leaching from calcine are investigated through chemical analysis, XRD, and SEM-EDS characterization.

The Cerro Verde copper-molybdenum porphyry mine, majority owned and operated by Freeport- McMoRan Copper & Gold, is located 30 km southwest of Arequipa Peru. The concentrator, which produces copper and molybdenum concentrates, started operating in late 2006 with a 108,000 tpd design capacity, processing primary sulfide ore (mainly chalcopyrite and molybdenite). Plant capacity was recently increased to 120,000 tpd. The comminution circuit consists of one 60? x 113" primary crusher, four MP-1000 secondary crushers in closed circuit with dry screens, four 2.4m x 1.6m High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGRs) in closed circuit with wet screens, and four 7.3m x 11m gearless ball mills in closed circuit with cyclones. The HPGR circuit is fed by the Secondary Crushing circuit product at a T80 of 35 millimeters, and the HPGR circuit product feeds the Ball Mill circuit at a T80 of 3000 microns. This paper describes operating experiences with HPGRs during these first four years highlighting improvements in operating practices and presentation of data regarding operational efficiencies, also discussed are the primary benefits provided by HPGRs such as production of micro fractured particles, reduced ore Bond Work Index, and reduced power consumption. Cerro Verde represents the first installation of HPGRs in both the copper industry and large scale hard rock mining.

Two major problems in the operation of air preheaters for boilers are corrosion and the accumulation of deposits on the heating surfaces. Corrosion or loss of metal necessitates replacement of parts; the accumulation of deposits decreases the size of the gas and air passages, resulting in increased pressure drop for the same gas flow, and also affects the heat transfer. These items, either singly or together, limit the capacity and efficiency at which the equipment can be operated and affect its availability, even causing undesirable shutdowns under extreme conditions The field and laboratory work on regenerative air preheaters described in this report covers research on the relative corrosion resistance of different materials, such as various metals, special metal coverings, and fired clays, and studies on deposits, their nature, analyses, and corrosive effects. This is the first report on cooperative work of The Air Preheater Corp., of New York City, and the Federal Bureau of Mines.

A diffusion mass transport model for predicting the microsegregation in a solidifying and coarsening dendritic mushy region of a binary alloy is presented. Two versions of this model are tested; one based on expressing the solute concentration in terms of mole fraction and the other on expressing the solute concentration in terms of mass fraction. On comparing previous model data sets and conditions, used in the analysis of Aluminum-Copper systems, a number of inconsistencies emerge. These inconsistencies are resolved on identifying a single set of data and conditions which take account of compositional density changes, "non-linear" thermodynamics and dynamic coarsening. An additional investigation is carried out to study the effect of assumed cooling mechanisms.

"Stainless steel castings are used in abundance in the mineral processing industry. In rotary kiln-based processes, these castings are typically exposed to high loads, corrosive elements, mechanical abrasion and cyclical temperature exposure. In the processing of iron ore pellets, it is typical to use a traveling grate preheater or a straight grate furnace to heat the pellets. Both machines have a conveyor that is mainly comprised of high temperature stainless steel castings. It is these castings which are the focus of this study. The expected life of these castings can be quite short, their cost quite high and the effort to replace them very labor intensive. The goal of this study was to gain a better understanding of the failure modes of these castings. With that basic understanding, modifications to the alloy content could be made to achieve a new operational paradigm. That paradigm could be a cheaper casting, a longer lasting casting or a casting tailored to special operating conditions (for example, highly corrosive gases or sudden temperature shocks). Over the past 4 years, Metso Minerals has sought to achieve a better understanding of the failure modes through modeling, laboratory testing and sampling of used castings from various end-users. In addition, we have tested new alloys in a laboratory setting and also in the field to see how they would perform compared to the existing ""standard casting"". Our testing has revealed interesting data concerning the impact toughness, sigma phase content and formation, chloride attack and other performance attributes of various grades of stainless steel when exposed to cyclical temperatures. Interesting results were also obtained concerning the addition of rare earth elements (Niobium, Boron, etc), nitrogen and manganese to a typical ASTM A297 grade of stainless steel. To date, a few hundred test castings have been installed in iron ore pellet plants worldwide. Many of these test castings have already experienced a year or more of operation with good results.INTRODUCTION Cast stainless steels (ASTM A297 and similar) are a main constituent used in the construction of iron ore pelletizing equipment. A typical straight grate pelletizing machine would contain upwards of 160,000lbs of ASTM A297 Grade HH castings. With a typical casting lasting only two to four years, and a casting costing around $35USD, it is easy to see that the castings are a main contributor to the overall cost of producing the pellets. Grade HH and HI (see chemical composition listed below) became the “go to” materials in the 1960’s and very few changes have been made to this day (the exception being plants that switched to flux pellet production in the 1980’s)."

Free radicals (FRs) present in coal dust directly influence the interaction behavior between lung cells and dust particles. FRs are atoms or groups containing unpaired electrons, with strong chemical reactivity and a short lifespan. FRs which are quite persistent in natural environments, termed environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs), have recently received much attention as new environmentally hazardous substances. EPFRs present on coal dust serves as an active intermediary to catalyze reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by oxygen molecules endangering mine workers’ health. Many EPFR species may be bonded to the particle surface or trapped within the particle during coalification and can be modified with progressive size reduction through cutting at the mining face or crushing/pulverization in the plant. This study measured EPFRs for lignite, sub-bituminous, and anthracite coal dust at various sizes. We especially focused on EPFRs for submicron coal dust prepared by cryogenic methods. The outcome of this study will directly improve the free radical-dependent toxicity quantification and ultimately contribute to the size-dependent coal dust toxicity quantification.

ALL sessions of the Mining Geology Committee at the Annual Meeting this year were held jointly with other groups, a plan that seemed to work out to the satisfaction of every one. Certain of these sessions are reported in this issue by others; the ones held on Wednesday are covered here. Ten papers, as published in the February M&M, were on the program for the Wednesday morning session, held jointly with the Society of Economic Geologists. Mr. Eckel made a brief presentation of his paper, on which there was no discussion, and Mr. Peoples presented that of which he was a joint author. D. M. Fraser then discussed a gravimeter survey for chromite in Cuba, which blocked out some 50,000 tons of ore, and F. G. Wells told of work on chromiferous sands in Oregon.
