This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on tunneling methods. The tunneling methods described are those used at the Ojuela unit of the Compania Minera de Penoles, S. A., the Mexican subsidiary of the American Metal Co., Ltd., of New York. The Ojuela unit is situated some 4 miles southeast of Mapimi, Durango. Mexico, the latter place being connected by a 15-mile narrow-gage railway with the standard gage railroad at Bermejillo, some 40 miles to the north of Torreon, the location of one of the company's smelters.

The high production rates achieved from mass mining methods such as block caving, sublevel caving and longwall mining require large conveyor belts, trucking loops (diesel/electrical) and rail systems for ore handling. However, the ore handling systems used in mass mines introduce a significant amount of heat into the overall ventilation system, which may be problematic at depth or in mines located in hot climates.In particular, the heat load from a conveyor system is not always well understood and consists of various components, including frictional heat from idlers, heat from electrical motors, heat from the drive train and heat from broken rock transported on the conveyor system. This paper presents results from a study that investigated the heat introduced to the ventilation air from a large conveyor system. The conveyor system transports ore with a maximum virgin rock temperature of 41°C from a depth of over 1 km. An effective technique to minimize miners? respirable dust and diesel exposure on mobile mining equipment is to place mine operators in enclosed cabs with designed filtration and pressurization systems. Many factors affect the performance of these enclosed cab systems, and one of the most significant factors is the effectiveness of the filtration system. High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA)-type filters are typically used because they are highly efficient at capturing all types and sizes of particles, including those in the submicron range such as diesel particulate matter (DPM). However, in laboratory tests, minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) 16 filters have proven to be highly efficient for capturing DPM and respirable dust. Also, MERV 16 filters can be less restrictive to cab airflow and less expensive than HEPA filters. To verify their effectiveness in the field, MERV 16 filters were used in the enclosed cab filtration system on a face drill and roof bolting mining machine and tested at an underground limestone mine. Test results showed that DPM and respirable dust concentrations were reduced by more than 90% when the cabs were properly sealed. However, when the cab door was opened periodically throughout the shift, the reduction efficiency of the MERV 16 filters was reduced to 80% on average.

"The isothermal bainite transformation kinetics of low- and medium-carbon alloy steels after hot deformation and the rmocycling treatment (TC) has been studied by the magneto - metric method. Deformation was produced by rolling at 800°C-1000°C. TC included three cycles of rapid (30°C/s) electro-heating up to 900°C-1000°C followed by quenching.Hot deformation retards bainite transformation in the lower part of bainite range (<400°C) and accelerates it in the upper part (>400°C). The effect is greater for higher strain and lower deformation temperature. Deformation also diminishes the overall bainite fraction below 400°C and increases the completeness of reaction above 400°C.Thermocycling provides more uniform ultrafine austenite grains with average size of 3 µm -4 µm compared to 12 µm -14 µm after conventional heating. The transformation rate after TC was almost the same as after conventional heating in low-carbon steel but was faster in medium-carbon with no change in the completeness of reaction. The degree of acceleration increased with rise of transformation temperature.There are a number of factors which are responsible for a change in bainite transformation kinetics in austenite deformed at high temperatures or subjected to TC. One of the most important factors is the refinement of structure, another one is structural and chemical inhomogenity of austenite due to deformation or to rapid heating. To estimate the contribution of these factors, ?-transformation was studied after different austenitizing conditions (low-temperature heating at 850°C- 950°C; high-temperature heating at 1100°C; step treatment – austenitizing at 1100°C, then cooling to 950°C-850°C). The results obtained make it possible to conclude that the structural and chemical inhomogeneity of austenite activate the bainite reaction while the grain refinement retards it. Intensity of the effect produced by each factor depends strongly on the steel composition."

This paper describes the facilities at Pointe Noire, Quebec that Wabush Mines utilizes for the receipt, distribution, stockpiling and shipping of iron ore concentrate and pellets. The main topics to be covered will be: 1. - General description 2. - Concentrate receiving facilities 3. - Conveying circuits 4. - Stockpiling 5. - Vessel loading GENERAL DESCRIPTION The map of the eastern Quebec - western Labrador area as shown in Appendix #1 shows the location of Wabush Mines properties. You will note the Scully Mine located at Wabush Lake, Labrador, 235 miles north of the town of Sept-Iles, Quebec. Our neighbors, the Iron Ore Company of Canada have their properties further north at Shefferville, near by at Carol Lake and at Sept-Iles. To the Southwest, our other neighbors, Quebec Cartier Mining, have their iron ore processing facilities and their terminus on the St-Lawrence at Port Cartier. Concentrates are prepared at the scully Mine by mining, crushing, grinding, concentrating, drying and high tension separation for shipment by rail to Pointe Noire, Quebec. Pointe Noire is situated across the bay from the town of Sept-Iles, Quebec on the North Shore of the St-Lawrence River. The concentrate consists of 66% iron, 2 ¼ percent silica and practically no moisture, permitting the use of specially constructed railroad cars and handling facilities to convert the concentrate into pellets, the final product.

The Bureau of Mines has been studying a modified steam-iron process using coal-derived producer gas for making either hydrogen plus carbon monoxide or methane. To provide a guide for this experimental study, compositions of equilibrium product gases for the reaction of steam plus carbon dioxide with iron were calculated and are discussed in this report. The calculations, which are described in this report, are based on thermodynamic data in the literature and cover temperatures from 800° to 1,300° K., pressures from 1 to 30 atmospheres, and hydrogen-to-carbon atomic ratios in the gas of 4 to 12. The equilibrium gas compositions are discussed in regard to making hydro-gen, carbon monoxide, and methane in the oxidation step of the modified steam-iron process. From the viewpoint of thermodynamics alone, assuming the reactions reach equilibrium, the discussion considers the effects of temperature, pressure, and composition of feed gas upon the composition of the product gas, the degree of oxidation of the iron, and the possible deposition of carbon. The results indicated the following: (1) Nearly all the carbon can be converted to methane at low temperatures (800° to 900° K.) and high pressures (over 20 atmospheres); (2) to obtain high yields of synthesis gas, high temperatures are required. For example, at 30 atmospheres, a temperature over 1,200° K. is required to convert 60 percent of the steam plus carbon dioxide to hydrogen plus carbon monoxide. Lower temperatures may be used at lower pressures) (3) oxidation of the iron increases with increasing pressure and decreases with increasing temperature; and (4) process conditions favoring carbon deposition were found within the range of variables studied, but it is thermodynamically possible to operate the oxidation process with steam and carbon dioxide outside this range of carbon deposition.

The record for autonomous haulage systems in underground mining over the past 15 years is patchy, marked by many trials and attempts, with few examples of sustained operation until relatively recently. The drivers for the introduction of this technology are variously listed as the occupational health and safety of people working in underground mines, reductions in direct operating costs and increases in productivity.This paper reviews the trends for operation of semi-autonomous and autonomous haulage achieved by underground mines and the defining features of the technology currently available. The inclusion of autonomous haulage as part of mining studies and the fundamental conditions for its successful application is discussed in the paper. The components required for an autonomous underground haulage system are outlined and the key aspects that need to support its effective implementation are examined together with their associated opportunities and risks. Special note is made of the critical role people, including executive leadership, have in ensuring the successful introduction of this technology.The paper draws on published case study material, equipment supplier information and research findings. Electrical apparatus and circuits began to be used in mines about 50 years ago. A search of the literature on mining reveals that in 1882, umping was being done by electricity in some aines of England. One account tells of a small electric locomotive being used in 1882 "to drive eight corves loaded with coal" in a mine near Dresden. In an account of his visit to some English mines, en American in 1892 mentions that he saw underground electric signals, lights, pumps, hoists, and one revolving- cutter-bar 19wall mining machine,. Among the carl electrical installa- tions in the United States was an electric locomotive in the Lykens Valley Coal Co. mine at Lykens Valley, Pa., in 1887. In 1889 the Sperry electric coal digger was being tried out. Tarce mining machines were placed in the Prospect mine, East Palestine, Ohio, in 1890. An electrical pumping plant was put in oneration during 1892 in the Woodward mine of the Delaware, Lacka- rahma & Western Railroad Co. Enclosed-type motors rere developed in the United States and shiped to English collieries about 1903. Along with introduction of this equipment grew the idea of the necessi- ty of government aid, in standardization. This paper describing the operations of the Cresson mine of the Cresson Consolidated Gold Mining & Milling Co. at Cripple Creek, Colorado, is one of a series of papers on mining methods and costs being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Cresson has recently been the most, important mine in the Cripple Creed district. During 1932 and 1933 an average of 230 tons of new ore (excluding dump material) that averaged about $10 in gold was shipped daily; 150 to 175 men were employed. Stoping was by the shrinkage method exclusively. The ore was screened washed, and hand-sorted at the surface and shipped to the Golden Cycle mill at Colorado Springs for treatment. A considerable proportion of the production was made by lessees working under the so-called "split-check" system. The authors are indebted to the management of the Cresson Consolidated Gold Mining & Milling Co. for permission to publish this paper.

Draglines have been a significant part of world open cut mining since the early part of the 20th century particularly for the removal of overburden in the strip mining of coal. Since the mid-1960s draglines have played a major part in the large strip mining coal developments of Queensland and New South Wales.There are now over 60 large draglines operating in Australia ranging in size from 23 to 103 cubic metres bucket capacity, with digging depths to 60 metres, dumping heights to 50 metres and dumping radii to 100 metres. The application of these draglines has progressed through the uncovering of coal in shallow, single seam operations to deep multi-seam operations requiring a greater dependence on pre-stripping activities ahead of the dragline to remove overburden not able to be efficiently handled by the dragline.

"During the history of the sulphur industry there have been three distinct phases of production. Factors controlling supplies during these periods have shifted from demand for sulphur to demand for energy and a cleaner environment. The pattern of brimstone production is t raced through these phases and includes estimates of future supply; these indicate an involuntary excess production of some 20 million plus tons per year by 1980 unless some large-scale new uses are found. Traditional uses for sulphur, including fertilizer, chemicals, fibers, etc., are generally expanding slowly; how• ever, supply in ""by-product"" form alone will soon outstrip demand. The predicted oversupply situation can be corrected by the development of novel potential markets. Promising areas include construction materials, insulation and plastics, among others."

In order to mitigate the effects of climate change, our society must be able to drastically reduce its CO2 emissions. As the metallurgical industry is a considerable contributor to these emissions, new greener technologies must be invented and developed. One option could be the direct production of metals from oxides using renewable electricity. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of using high-temperature molten oxide electrolysis (MOE) for iron and ferrochrome production. FactSage™, ver 8.2 (by Thermfact Ltd and GTT-Technologies) was utilised for estimating a feasible equilibrium electrolyte composition, and the experiments were conducted at 1550–1580°C in conical alumina crucibles with iridium wire as the cathode and platinum wire as the anode. The sources of iron and chromium were either pure FeO powder or industrial chromite pellets. Voltage was applied to the electrolysis cell for 6 hrs and the resulting current was measured, along with oxygen concentration in the off-gas line. The electrolyte comprised of SiO2, Al2O3, MgO and CaO. First, the effect of FeO concentration on iron reduction efficiency was investigated using only pure oxide powders as starting materials. The results indicated that 10 wt per cent FeO mixed with the electrolyte resulted in more efficient iron reduction compared to 20 wt per cent. In further experiments, industrial chromite pellets were ground and mixed with the CaO-free electrolyte. Iron and chromium reduction efficiencies were higher when approximately 19 wt per cent of the total sample mass consisted of pellets compared to increasing the pellet amount to 37 wt per cent. Generally, the chromium solubility in the liquid electrolyte was relatively low, and most of the chromium was confined to the spinel solid solution, from where its dissolution to the liquid electrolyte was very slow, resulting in slow reduction kinetics. For larger scale applications, economically more viable electrode materials should be investigated.

[Secretary&apos;s Note.—The following official tables, prepared by the government of the State of Nuevo Leon, and presented to the Institute at the fifth seseion of its Mexican meeting, held at Monterrey, November 26, 1901, present in compact form a general summary of the mineral and metallurgical industry of the State for the preceding calendar year, together with a statement of the railway-shipments of ores from January 1 to October 31, 1901, which, in the absence of direct official mining and metallurgical statistics (not yet available for that year), clearly indicates an increased activity and productiveness of these industries. In other words, the mines are reported to have yielded in 1900 a total product of 83,960,169 kilos of ore; whereas, the railway is reported to have carried, in 10 months of 1901, a total of 108,318,647 kilos of ore. At this rate, the railway-shipments for 1901 mould amount to nearly 130,000,000 kilos. It is, of course, possible that the railwaystatistics include other freight than ores, or that they include duplications, such as would be involved in the record, first of certain ores transported, and afterwards of the " base bullion " produced therefrom. An accurate comparison is therefore impossible ; yet, after making all reasonable allowances for such items as have been named, it seems safe to infer that the mining and metallurgical industry of this State accomplished in 1901 a substantial progress.]

The specific objective of this investigation was to determine the compressibility factors for helium and carbon dioxide mixtures at -10° and -20° C and pressures to 1,000 psia. A Burnett apparatus was used. Data from the experiments were treated by the method of Barieau and Dalton. Tables of compressibility factors and approximations of the virial coefficients are presented for 10 binary mixtures as well as for helium and carbon dioxide. The results follow the same trend as data previously reported.

"This paper was the subject of a cross-disciplinary presentation under the chairmanship of Dr A.M. EdwardsManagers need quality information for effective decision making. This demand, at the present time, is being fulfilled by the increased use of computers via information systems, decision support systems and management information systems. The idea of incorporating intelligence into computers to aid decision-makers has been evolving for over two decades. In recent years, significant progress is reported on applications to business and sciences. In engineering functions, the Artificial Intelligence approach that seems to have great potential is the application of Knowledge Based Systems.The primary objective of this paper is to identify domains in mining engineering where application of knowledge based systems could be beneficial. Incorporation of the expertise required during the analysis and interpretation stages of an engineering design problem through knowledge based systems is recognized as an area of significant benefit. To this end, the components of knowledge based systems for mine ventilation and strata control design are described. The potential applications and limitations of knowledge based systems are outlined. IntroductionCorrect decisions are the key to success in any enterprise. Scope of decisions varies with the echelons of management hierarchy. The decisions of top management are strategic, relating to the long-term future of the organization. In a mineral organization, these deal with such issues as the acquisition of a new mineral property or the diversification of the business to exploit additional markets. At the operational level, a manager is concerned with decisions pertaining to day-to- day eventualities related to production activities and other short-term needs. In either case, the prerequisite is the timely availability and use of information. The difficulty involved in decision-making depends on the situational aspect. In. many cases, the decisions to be made under given conditions are fairly straight-forward and standard. This may be due to experience gained from decision-making in similar situations in the past. In fact, many decisions in operations management are either repetitive or routine."

"In the present study, electrochemical measurements, especially cathodic potentiodynamic polarization (CPC) and cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP), have been employed to study the kinetics of ferric reduction on chalcopyrite in aqueous Fe(II)Fe( III)H2SO4 solution at 90 °C and 110 °C. Results from the calculation of speciation in the above solution reveal that, at both 90 °C and 110 °C, the real Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio is much lower than the nominal ratio, which leads to smaller VALUES (for the reversible potential of the ferric/ferrous couple. Exchange current densities of the ferric/ferrous couple were obtained and are on the order of 106 10 5 A/cm2 a t 9 0 °C and 1 07 10 6 A/cm2 at 110 °C, respectively. The Tafel slopes from the CPP method are higher than those from the CPC method at both 90 °C and 110 °C. The transfer coefficients were about 0.360.59 at 90 °C and 0.370.65 at 110 °C. Based on the exchange current densities obtained, the rate constant kc was calculated. It was found that kc at 90 °C was slightly larger than at 110 °C, especially for the results obtained by the CPC method. The average rate constants are 862.17 cm/s for CPC and 65.30 cm/s for CPP at 90 °C, and 477.69 cm/s for CPC and 63.53 cm/s for CPP at 110 °C for nominal Fe3+/Fe2+ ratios ranging from 1:1 to 1000:1. INTRODUCTIONChalcopyrite is one of the most abundant copper-bearing minerals, accounting for approximately 70% of the world’s known copper reserves (Wang, 2005). Most of the currently proposed leaching processes are based on sulfuric acid with ferric ions and/or dissolved oxygen as oxidants. Some of these processes have been piloted in attempts to implement these technologies on an industrial scale, such as Activox (U.S. 5,232,491, 1993), Nenatech (U.S. 5,993,635, 1999), Dynatec (U.S. 5,730,776, 1998), AAC/UBC (U.S. 6,503,293, 2003), Total Pressure Oxidation (U.S. 5,698,170, 1997), CESL (U.S. 5,874,055, 1999) and Galvanox (U.S. 7,846,233, 2010).To date, much effort has been devoted to understanding the kinetics and mechanisms of the oxidative processes (Biegler & Horne, 1985; Córdoba, Muñoz, Blázquez, González, & Ballester, 2008, 2009; Ghahremaninezhad, Asselin, & Dixon, 2010; Hirato, Majima, & Awakura, 1987; Hiroyoshi, Kuroiwa, Miki, Tsunekawa, & Hirajima, 2004; Warren, Wadsworth, & El-raghy, 1982) or the cathode reduction reactions of chalcopyrite itself (Arce & González, 2002; Biegler & Swift, 1976; Biegler, 1977; Nava, González, Leinen, & Ramos-Barrado, 2008), by chemical or electrochemical methods. However, as the most important cathodic processes in chalcopyrite leaching systems, the cathodic reductions of ferric ions or dissolved oxygen are worth measuring due to their effects on the overall leaching rate, as predicted by mixed potential theory."

The Bureau of Mines developed techniques for induction melting of titanium in a split, water-cooled copper crucible. Calcium fluoride, which was used as an inert slag cover during melting, formed an insulating layer of solid slag between the ingot and the crucible wall. This thin layer of slag effectively insulated the ingot from the crucible and prevented the molten metal from shorting across the slits between adjacent segments of the crucible. The technique provides a means of melting loose titanium sponge and scrap and eliminates the need for fabricating a consumable electrode. This report describes the equipment developed and compares ingots produced from two varieties of titanium sponge, from titanium scrap, and from previously melted titanium with ingots prepared by vacuum-arc melting and electroslag melting. A melting scheme was also proposed and evaluated whereby loose titanium sponge was consolidated into a first-melt ingot for vacuum-arc remelting.

This study compared particle size distribution and density distribution of crushed products for waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) before and after heat treatment. The crushing process for heat-treated WPCBs is a selective crushing process; more metal is concentrated in the coarse particle range of 1.0–0.5 mm and high density range of 2.8–2.96 g/cm3. WPCBs were separated using the Falcon separator to recycle useful metals. The Box-Behnken module of Design-Expert was used to obtain optimal separation parameters, namely, rotational frequency of 25 Hz, recoil water pressure of 0.025 Mpa and feed speed of 34 ml/s. On this basis, the separation indexes for WPCBs with and without heat treatment were compared. Experimental results show that the recovery effect is better for heat-treatedWPCBs than for thosewithout heat treatment. Comparedwith the non-heattreatedWPCBs, the product grade of heat-treated WPCBs is 1.95% higher, and its recovery is improved by about 14%. Finally, characteristics ofWPCBs before and after heat treatment were analyzed on the basis of stress experiments and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Results of mechanical characterization indicate that the stress experiment for non-heat-treated WPCBs has a maximumpressure load of 212 N and displacement of 20mm, but heat-treatedWPCBs only need 140 N stress and 14 mm displacement. SEM shows that copper foil and fiberglass cloth are deformed in different directions and sizes after heat treatment to form gaps, which promote liberation of copper foil and fiberglass cloth.
