The Bureau of Mines, under its cooperative agreement with the Kansas State Board of Health, has been conducting a study of the various methods of oil-field brine disposal in the oil fields of Kansas. A previous report5/dealt with this problem in the Ritz-Canton field, McPherson County, Kans. A preliminary survey of the Arkansas River drainage area in western Kansas was made during November and December 1934 and January 1935, and a second survey was made approximately one year later during the months of December 1935 and January and March 1936. In addition to the data on the production of oil and 'brine in the various fields and the methods used for handling the brine, the surface drainage and character of the surface soil in the various oil-producing areas were studied.

The growing interest in beryllium as a structural material, and its in-creased use in recent years for atomic energy application, have led both government and industry to express concern over the inadequacy of the beryllium resources in the United States and the free world. Contemplated and proposed uses for this unique material will surpass the capacity of the domestic beryllium mining industry to supply raw material, which is presently extracted from relatively small deposits by hand sorting. The need for a simple beneficiation process for beryl ores has long been recognized by the Bureau of Mines, but to date no single process has proved satisfactory for treating deposits containing a sufficient tonnage of beryl ore to warrant commercial exploitation. As a part of the Bureau's continuing effort to develop an economical recovery process, this report describes flotation research on samples of beryl-bearing pegmatites from the George Roebling mine in Connecticut, and the Colony mine in New Hampshire. The study resulted in two methods of treatment to which the ores responded reasonably well.

Single-crystalline films of silicon of good quality were vacuum-deposited on sapphire. The improved crystallinity was achieved by the strict exclusion of oxygen from the evaporation system, including the use of a "oxygen-free" silicon source. To minimize possible contamination of the source, the silicon was sublimed from the solid at about 1390° C. using a simple electron bombardment system to heat the silicon. This resulted in deposition rates of about 5 to 7 µ per hr and film thicknesses of 4 to 20 µ. The vacuum during deposition was ordinarily about 5x 10-8 Torr, DESPITE the success achieved in the chemical vapor deposition of silicon on sapphire using Silane,1-4 vacuum deposition has not provided comparable properties. For example, Chu et a1.5 vacuum-deposited silicon on single-crystalline substrates of A12O3, Sic, ThO2, and other compounds, and, although some epi- but the use of ultrahigh vacuum (about 1 to 3 x10-9 Torr) during deposition did not significantly improve the results in the oxygen-free system. The crystalline quality of films deposited on (0001) sapphire was found to be considerably superior to (1102) sapphire surfaces. Using (0001) sapphire, single-crystalline films were deposited at temperatures as low as 780° C and as high as 1075°C, with the best crystalline quality obtained at about 1000°C. At this temperature, hole mobilities over 250 sq cm per v-sec were achieved. taxy was indicated, single-crystalline films were not produced. More recently, Salama, Tucker, and young6 evaporated silicon on single-crystalline sapphire, but only poor crystallinity was observed, and low carrier mobilities were measured. In the present experiments, good-quality single-crystalline films of silicon on sapphire have been achieved by specifically excluding oxygen from the evaporation. This included not only the use of a "clean" vacuum system but, of special importance, the use of an oxygen-free silicon source. This has also been shown to provide a dramatic improvement in silicon homoepi-taxy.7 As a result, silicon-on-sapphire films with hole mobilities over 250 sq cm per v-set were achieved, and single-crystal films were grown as low as 780°C and as

A residue storage facility (RSF) was designed to cater for Davidson Creek Area and Robertson Range Area operations under the FerrAus Pilbara iron ore development project in the Pilbara Region, Western Australia. Annual ore production was about 15 million tonnes over a period of up to 15 years. The RSF was designed to handle a tailings production rate of 2.2 Mt/a over the project life with ability to be expanded at a later date. The composition of tailings was predominantly -45 ¦ material with some spiral reject material. The fraction of solids was expected to be between 40 per cent and 50 per cent solids by weight.The RSF was designed as an above ground storage facility, integrating with a mine waste dump planned close to the selected RSF site. This integration helped to increase the stability of the RSF embankment and to reduce the construction cost. The main source of construction material for the remaining part of the RSF embankment was selected to be mine waste. The RSF was designed to be constructed in stages by considering the availability of mine waste according to the mining schedule. The use of mine waste for construction of RSF embankments has several benefits over use of borrowed material. Static liquefaction is a geotechnical hazard in mine tailings facilities. Soils that are contractive in shear are susceptible to static liquefaction. Tailings facilities are dynamic structures, typically growing in height each year. Dilative tailings may become contractive under increased effective stress. In this paper we show that Cone Penetration Test (CPT) data can be used to estimate the future state of in-place tailings under changes in effective stress. Susceptibility to static liquefaction is typically evaluated with the CPT by using a clean-sand equivalent normalized cone tip resistance (Qtn,cs) or by estimating the state parameter (?). An alternative approach is to evaluate the soil-state using the yield-stress-ratio (YSR = ?’y/?’v0). If the YSR equals one it is on the normal consolidation line and the soil-state is contractive. YSR values greater than three are typically dense of the critical state line (CSL) and the soil-state is dilative. In this paper we review how to calculate Qtn,cs, ?, and ?’y; and how the YSR can be used to screen for contractive soil behaviour. Unlike Qtn,cs and ?, it is very simple to estimate how the YSR will change due to an increase in overburden stress. This YSR approach was evaluated at three locations that saw increases in overburden of 10 m, 20 m, and 25 m. We show that the ?’y calculations are consistent and the increase in effective stress moves the soil state towards looser soil states. Measurements of vapor pressure can be used to determine the thermodynamic activities of the components of metallic solutions . The determination of activity by this method requires accurate values for the vapor pressure of the pure component and for its partial pressure above the alloy solution . This investigation was conducted to measure the vapor pressure of liquid manganese for use in future studies of the activity of manganese in various liquid alloys . In related investigations in the Bureau's Pyrometallurgy Laboratory , vapor pressures of copper , iron and nickel have been measured and activit 4 5 6 have been determined in the iron- copper and iron- nickel systems . Difficulties were experienced with manganese which were not encountered in the previous investigations . Manganese oxidizes readily and greater care was needed to maintain an oxygen- and moisture - free atmosphere in the furnace . In addition , liquid manganese wet the refractories and there was a tendency to foam and splash on introduction of the carrier gas . Because of these difficulties several variations in the experimental procedure were studied . These were first tested with silver which has a vapor pressure of the same order of magnitude as manganese but is relatively inert at high temperatures . Although no significant changes in the original procedure resulted from this work, considerable data were obtained for silver and have been included in this report . Bauer and BBrruunnnneerr7/ have reported the only extensive investigation of the vapor pressure of liquid manganese . However , their results are not consistent with the data obtained by McCabe and Hudson for solid manganese . Measurements of the vapor pressure of silver have been reported by McCabe and Birchenal1,2/ Schadel and Birchenall , 10/ Harteck , 11 / Fischer , 12/ and von Wartenberg.13 / Generally , these investigators conducted their measurements at lower temperatures than were used in this study .

In 1967 the United States consumed 58.8 quadrillion Btu of energy. Both the Atomic Energy Commission and the Resources for the Future, Inc., a private economic forecasting group, predict that the United States energy requirements will reach 135 quadrillion Btu by the year 2000. In 1967 bituminous coal produced 21.4 percent of the energy used in the United States and anthracite coal another 0. 5 percent. Coal Reserves Coal reserves make up about four-fifths of the United States storehouse of fuel in proven reserves. Seventy-five percent of all fuel, likely to be found and recovered is coal. Electric utilities consume more than half of the bituminous coal mined in the United States in generating 53 percent of the nation's electricity. Atomic Energy Commission analysts have proposed the development of a vast "national energy system" based upon long-distance electrical transmission from abundant untapped coal reserves in the western United States. The study predicts that even if uranium supplies are available and economic breeder reactors developed, coal requirements for electricity generation will more than double by 1980 and increase another 50 percent before the year 2000.

"Duplex converter process, in which the first converter is used for removing phosphorus from hot metal (De-P), is an important way to produce low P-content and ultra-low P-content steels. In order to improve phosphorization removal and formation of slag with high basicity at relatively low temperature during dephosphorization converter process, effects of temperature, silicon content in hot metal and varied compositions of the De-P converter slag on phosphorus distribution between the slag and hot metal were investigated with thermodynamic calculations and by laboratory scale experiments in present work. Results showed that phosphorus distribution ratio between slag and metal was varied in 10.6~26.6 when basicity of the slag was in the range of 1.5~2.1 at 1370, and the distribution ratio was increased with increasing basicity and Fe10 content in the slag.IntroductionIt is known that phosphorus exists in steel in the form of solid solution, which can significantly improve strength and hardness of steel at room temperature. However, the plasticity and toughness of steel, especially the low temperature plasticity is sharply reduced and leads to high ductile-brittle transition temperature. This phenomenon is commonly known as cold brittleness of steel [1~3]. Hence, phosphorus should be removed as much as possible in the steelmaking process, because it is generally harmful to the iron and steel products."

The main constituent of the feed to the "Sulphide Section" (31 t/h), in the F. Sartori Plant (6000 tid) of the Miniere di Mon)eponi(Sardinia), is the ore of the Campo Pisano -Funtanaperda Mine (1 ? Difficulties have always been experienced in the treatment of this ore, owing to the extramely fine Pyrite-Sphalerite intergrowth and to the high Pyrite and soluble salts contents. The first mentioned difficulty was overcome with a rather complex flowsheet (see fig.1A and lB)(2); the others with a reagent combination that required a pH of 11 in a pulp loaded with soluble salts. This meant high consumption of alkalizer, and also of the other reagents; furthermore the alkalizer had to be mainly NaOH with only minor amounts of lime, because the latter tended to depress not only the pyrite but also the middlings, which were supposed to float. With dialchylditiophosphate alone as a collector, a lower pH could have been used, but a certain amount of amylxanthate was indispensable to promote flotation of the middlings. On the other hand, a bulk-flotation of sphalerite and pyrite at low pH could not be very advantageous on account of the high pyrite content in the feed(3).

The massive sulphides containing ore values in zinc, lead, copper and silver were discovered in 1953 as a result of a joint venture between the American Metal Company and the International Nickel Company of Canada. The discovery was named after Mr. Heath Steele, manager of exploration for Amco at the time of the discovery.Mill production began in February 1957; however, the mine was forced to shutdown in 1958 due to depressed metal prices and metallurgical problems. It was re-opened in 1962 and milling operations resumed at 725 t/d until 1968 when the milling capacity was boosted to 1450 t/d and then to 2700 t/d in 1969.OreThe main ore zones are massive sulphides with very fine mineral grain. The chalcopyrite, galena and marmatitesphalerite occurrences are finely disseminated.Liberation is accomplished by grinding to 68% to 72% <400 mesh. Elkem&apos;s technologies for the processing of waste materials, dusts, sludges and other residues, are based on the use of their Multi-Purpose Furnace as the primary processing component. The Multi-Purpose Furnace? is an electric slag resistance reduction furnace equipped with a hot media, Modular Freeze Lining and Elkem&apos;s proprietary, air tight electrode seals. The oil cooled? freeze lining allows specific heat fluxes 2 to 3 times higher than furnaces lined with conventional refractory. Reduction activities taking place within the furnace are free from the reoxidation potential of infiltrated air as Elkem&apos;s electrode seals are positively gas tight. Small quantities of highly concentrated off gas of controlled composition are produced to suit the requirements of downstream processing. The high electrical thermal efficiency achieved by generating heat within the slag itself, combined with the ability to operate at high melting rates and intense power density, makes the Multi-Purpose Furnace 9 an unique implement for the design of furnace products. These characteristics are utilized in the processing example cited, "Elkem&apos;s EAF Dust Processing Technology", which combines two proven technologies in an economically feasible system for the recovery of contained metal values from K061 wastes at the same time producing a disposable slag product. The portion of the example dealing with the condensation of zinc was prepared with the assistance of Imperial Smelting Processes, Limited of Bristol, England with whom Elkem has a non- exclusive license.

"SynopsisThe combustion and co-combustion behaviour of macadamia nut shell, high-ash coal, and anthracite, along with their blends was studied using thermogravimetry. The reactivities of all samples were analysed in air, oxygen, and CO2 atmospheres and at different heating rates from 10 to 40°C/min. Macadamia shell was found to have a lower ash content, 0.36%, than coal with 27.49% ash. The calorific values were similar, 19.64 MJ/kg and 19.44 MJ/kg respectively. The differential thermogravimetric results indicate that as the heating rates increase the ignition, peak, and burnout temperatures increase significantly, leading to high combustion rates. The interaction between the fuels was evaluated using the weighted average model, and the results indicated that there is more synergetic interaction between 20% macadamia plus 80% coal under oxygen than in air and CO2 atmospheres. The results of the investigation provide the combustion and co-combustion characteristics of various samples and their blends and indicate their combustion compatibilities. IntroductionThe global macadamia nut industry is developing at a very rapid rate. South Africa is currently the world’s third largest producer, with a production of about 35 000 t as of 2012 (Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, 2013), compared to 840 t produced in 1996. The greatest numbers of the macadamia nut farms in South Africa can be found in Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, with Mpumalanga as the largest producing area. There are many factors influencing the increased demand for macadamia nuts, the most important factor perhaps being their nutritional value (California Dried Fruit and Nuts, 2011; MPC, 2014) and their suitability as a feedstock for manufacturing cosmetics, bakery products, nut paste, chocolates, sauces, and ice-cream. As a fuel, macadamia shell has a high heating value ‘as-fired’ of about 20.71 MJ/kg (Vhathvarothai et al., 2013), which could in turn be used in drying the nust, and the shell could also be milled and applied as a fertilizer."

"This paper will discuss the design analysis of sheet pile cofferdams for static and dynamic blast loads. Following construction of the new Willis Avenue Bridge across the East River between Brooklyn and Manhattan, in-river piers No. 9 and No. 10 from the former bridge were demolished, partially by explosive charges. The blast at Pier 10 was conducted first and though the demolition charge was relatively small, it gave confidence that the sheeting could be designed to resist the blast load. This paper primarily summarizes our analysis and performance of a sheet pile cofferdam at Pier 9 used to withstand the larger blast loads, contain the blast debris, and allow excavation of the pier below the existing river bed mudline. The program NLFlex was used to predict stresses and deformations of the cofferdams under dynamic blast loads, using simplified equations to estimate the underwater blast pressures. Specifically, the analysis focused on the stresses in the struts, waler beam, sheet pile interlocks and connection of the sheeting to the waler beam. Design included allowing plastic deformations and limited rupture of the sheet pile interlocks under the blast loading. Comparisons are made between stresses assessed by the dynamic finite element modeling and empirical relationships used within the industry. The performance of the system after the actual blast is discussed as well as details of the performance of welded vs. bolted connections within the system. IntroductionThe Willis Avenue Bridge is one of the major access ways from the Bronx into Manhattan. The location is shown on Figure 1. The original bridge constructed in 1901 was a swing bridge over the East River. The bridge was in disrepair and outdated with regards to its ability to handle the flow of traffic resulting in numerousaccidents.In 2007, Kiewit Constructors Inc./Weeks Marine, Inc., A Joint Venture was selected to construct a replacement bridge. The $612 million project included construction of a new bridge just to the south of the original bridge. The most notable aspect of the construction was floating and lifting the new 350 ft. long swing span in place as a single piece. However, another significant challenge was using blasting to demolish two of the abandoned piers which were within the East River. The blast would be near existing structures in both Manhattan and Brooklyn and would be within 30 ft. of the new bridge."

Economic recovery of gold from complex gold ores, including poly-metallic deposits, is impacted by the presence of cyanide-soluble base metals. These base metals can create both a metallurgical challenge plus waste handling and disposal challenges. Base metals such as Cu and Zn compete for the cyanide reagent and often increase the total cyanide consumption to the point of making precious metals recovery uneconomic. In addition, the accumulation of base metals in cyanide solutions represent a challenge for cyanide detoxification and waste water treatment as these metals report to waste sludge. Such sludge requires safe handling and disposal, with possible long-term liabilities.Base metal interference can be removed with sulfidisation-acidification-recycling-thickening (SART) process technology. SART liberates the base metal from the cyanide complex and precipitates the metal as an insoluble sulfide product that can be recovered as a commercial grade concentrate. With the base metal precipitated, the cyanide can be regenerated as free cyanide and recycled to the gold extraction circuit.BioteQ completed laboratory testing for two projects, one employing cyanide leaching of copper-gold sulfide flotation concentrate and one employing a Merrill Crowe process, to determine the effectiveness of SART to remove and recover Cu and Zn in high-grade sulfide concentrates and to reduce the impact of cyanide-soluble metals on gold recovery and cyanide consumption. Hydraulic backfill is generally retained in slopes using permeable barricades. Mitchell et a! (1975), Mitchell (1992) and Grice (1989) have shown that under normal drainage conditions, barricades experience low levels of loading. Cowling et a! (1988) have also shown that barricades are susceptible to piping failures if excess water has ponded on the upper backfill surface and if leakage of backfill from the barricades has occurred. During 1997, six hydraulic backfill barricades failed in four different Australian mines. Fortunately, in each case, the quantity of backfill slurry released was small, and no injuries to personnel nor damage occurred. Detailed investigation of two of the incidents showed that the primary cause of failure could be attributed to the delivery of excess quantities of transport water from the low-density slurry. For each of the incidents investigated there was evidence of the development of piping failures, which resulted in hydrostatic loading conditions on the barricades from the ponded water on the upper backfill surface. The circular failure surfaces in the barricades were characteristic of the application of point loading Conditions.

UV-visible spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and vibrating tube densimetry have been used in our laboratory to determine equilibrium constants of aqueous species at temperatures as high as 325 °C. The UV-visible and Raman spectra of solutions containing metal complexes and ionized acids or bases can be used to yield formation constants by applying curve fitting methods to resolve the contribution of each species. Colorimetric pH indicators identified by Johnston and coworkers at the University of Texas (Austin) provide an alternative means of determining ionization constants and the pH of complex mixtures. High precision density measurements over the same range yield standard partial molar volumes, which are key parameters for "equations of state" for aqueous species. Examples are given for the copper-ammonia system, simple carboxylic acids, and the iron-sulphate system.

Information is categorized by mineral commodity to make it easy to determine what logging techniques have been used for evaluating specific metals and nonmetals. Part 1 discusses logging techniques applied to deposits of the following metals: aluminum, antimony, beryllium, boron, copper, iron, lead and zinc, maganese, mercury, nickel, silver and gold, tin, tungsten, and uranium. Part 2 covers the following nonmetals: coal, evaporites, fluorspar, oil shale, rock salt, and sulfur. Separate bibliographies are given for English and foreign language references.

During a recent investigation the authors were interested in determining: (1) How many points were necessary to locate the deviation curve for copper-constantan thermocouples within an accuracy of about 0.05° C., used in connection with the, "standard" thermocouple of L. H. Adams (2) Whether copper-constantan thermocouples showing considerable deviations from the "standard" were consistent throughout their calibration. (3) How reliable the extrapolated portion is - that is, the interval between -183 and -220° C. of the "standard" thermocouple.

"The Clarabelle Mill rock tailings have the potential to generate sulphuric acid through chemical and biological oxidation of sulphide minerals. Current rock tailings assay between 0.80 -1.40 %S, with sulphur occurring principally as coarse pyrrhotite. Acid generation within the tailings area can be substantially reduced by segregating pyrrhotite rich tailings in a submerged storage area and by depositing only low sulphur rock tailings in exposed areas. Laboratory tests confirmed that low sulphur tailings could be produced by flotation at reduced pH with a small xanthate addition. A plant test was conducted to evaluate the production of low sulphur tailings in conjunction with INCO's continuing commitment to environmental protection and progressive decommissioning of the metallurgical site.During the plant evaluation, approximately 5% of the mill rock tailings were reprocessed in a line of 100 tt3 Denver flotation cells. Tailing grades below 0.40% S were easily achieved through operation at pH 6 -7, with xanthate addition (dosages up to 0.02 lb/ton) and 10 -15 minutes of nominal retention time. Froth depths between 1 -3 inches combined with relatively liberal amounts of frother were required to pull the lightly mineralized froth into the concentrate which averaged 11% sulphur and less than 5% mass recovery. In addition, three field lysimeters were each filled with two hundred.ton bulk samples of low sulphur tails (0.35% S), standard rock tailings (0.98% S), and mill total tailings (2.30% S) for long term monitoring. The implications for full scale plant design, tailings area decommissioning, the possibility of increased nickel recovery and preliminary field lysimeter data are discussed."

Currently, it is very difficult to obtain qualitative and quantitative information about the status and production process of a construction site. As a rule, companies depend on reports from on-site experts. There is no end-to-end digitalization due to the mobility of equipment and ever-changing locations. Equipment from different manufacturers, especially in special foundation engineering, is highly specialized. Any data collected by this equipment is recorded in proprietary formats and made available on the manufacturers' platforms. This exacerbates the situation, making simple analysis of performance indicators impossible. Most functions such as construction diaries, equipment utilization analyses, etc. are implemented only as standalone solutions. This does not allow for prompt visualization and intervention in critical process sequences because the construction site process is usually managed using a cost-based method. Furthermore, special foundation engineering requires a high level of expertise in an extremely wide range of construction processes. In this article, the results from a set of non-proprietary performance analysis tools are presented using numerous practical examples. Once a construction element is completed, the equipment data is immediately transferred to the platform using the latest cloud technology. Because the data is normalized, construction progress can be documented immediately, even for mixed equipment fleets.
