NexGen’s approach to uranium processing design including the crushing/grinding and leaching of raw ore through to yellowcake precipitation and tailings management focuses on minimizing surface footprint, freshwater consumption, and human radiation exposure. Applying the concept of best available technologies economically achievable (“BATEA”), NexGen continues to research, evaluate, test and validate various advanced technologies that can be incorporated into the Project design, including distinctive tailings storage techniques. Additionally, NexGen is proposing that tailings generated from the mill processes be used as cemented paste backfill of stopes, as well as stored in a purpose-built, Underground Tailings Management Facility (“UGTMF”) comprised of several dedicated chambers. The paste backfill method of tailings storage is used globally, however, constructing purpose-built tailings chambers in waste rock is a new concept in uranium mining, which would typically be cost prohibitive for most projects given the expense to develop non-economic material for the sole purpose of storing tailings. The Rook I Project is uniquely positioned to implement the UGTMF due to robust Project economics and favourable technical setting which provides NexGen with the opportunity to set an elite standard for tailings management. When compared to conventional surface tailings management facilities, storing tailings underground as cemented paste reduces geotechnical, geochemical, environmental, and human health risks associated with tailings management. Additionally, the UGTMF vastly reduces the area of surface disturbance and allows for progressive decommissioning during the life of mine operations.

"A novel technique was successfully developed for nickel further purification by vacuum directional solidification. The removal effect of impurities in nickel was studied based on theoretical analysis and experiments. High removal efficiency of impurities in nickel can be realized according to theoretical analysis. The experimental results show that the vacuum directional solidification treatment could increase the nickel purity from 99.96% to 99.996%. Since vacuum directional solidification could effectively remove the impurities from nickel with low contamination and low cost, it is a potential route to obtain high-purity nickel for commercial application.IntroductionNickel is widely used in metallurgy, machinery, petroleum industry, chemical industry, construction industry, light industry, and other industries for its ductility, medium hardness, ferromagnetism and high chemical activity. Nickel-based alloy is an important material for the key parts of aircraft, tanks, submarines, radars, nuclear reactors and aerospace fields [1-5]. Generally, nickel contains Si, P, S, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sn, Sb, Pb, Bi, Al, Mn, Mg and other impurity elements, which may hinder the commercial application of nickel. Therefore, it is necessary to refine the crude nickel for the high purity nickel."

The content of the book covers: (1) The theory of the Eötvös torsion balance; derivation of the working formulas; description of the instrument; method of observation; relation of the magnitudes observed to the lines of force and the level surfaces of gravity; corrections or normal effects, near and distance terrane; subterranean effects; effects due to certain mathematical bodies. (2) Notes on the practical employment of the Eötvös torsion balance; initial testing of the instrument and of accessories; hints on planning the survey; work at the station site; office computation and plotting of results; the interpretation of the results: (3) A description of the instrument and instructions for its manipulation. This book was the best discussion in English on the theory and use of the Eötvös torsion balance and is surpassed only by a later paper by the same authors that covers much of the same ground. The book is suitable for a textbook for beginners, and advanced students will find it of use. It should be available as a reference book in all geological libraries and in all torsion balance department offices.

Size-by-size partition curves for mineral separation in dense-medium cyclones pivot about a single characteristic point. This is defined for stable, non-segregating media by the medium density and the proportion of the medium reporting to the underflow. The pivot point departs from these values for unstable, conventional media. The phenomenon can be represented by an equation with two parameters defining pivot point coordinates and two the Ep value. On the basis of experiments in a 200 mm cyclone using ferrosilicon media, simple regression equations were developed for the separation parameters in terms of operating conditions (the coefficients were likely to be site-specific). The experiments successfully decoupled the effects of medium density and viscosity and showed that the value of Ep was independent of the former but strongly dependent on the latter. A classification model was used to predict the density of the underflow medium, a knowledge of which is required to determine the pivot parameters. The model correctly reflects the performance trends observed in dense-medium cyclone operation and has the potential to be generalised to a wide range of industrial practice.

The essence of an atomistic unified kinetic model of strained thin film growth and defect initiation is presented along with a comparison of its consequences obtained from computer simulations with experiments. Within the competing kinetics of a strain dependent activated incorporation of atoms and an asymmetry between upwards and downwards inter-layer migration, the model provides a consistent description of 2D versus 3D morphology evolution accompanied by the appearance of surface vacancies and steps at no energy cost. The correlated migration of these precursor defects offers an atomistic mechanism for the emergence of surface half-loops from the growth front (thus accounting for configurational and thermal entropy) governed by activation energies closer to their correlated motion under the evolving strain fields and thus substantially less than those calculated with respect to the perfect crystal as the reference state. The essential mechano-chemical nature of the problem is compared and contrasted with the historical literature of such phenomenon as precipitation hardening and sintering in metallic and ceramic composites.

Altonorte began as a concentrate roasting operation in 1988 under the name of Refimet. In 1993, a copper smelter was built with a design capacity of 203,000 tonnes per annum of concentrate. Since 2001, many technological advances have been made in Altonorte, where the biggest Noranda Reactor in the world is installed being the first Noranda Reactor reaching above one million tonnes of copper concentrates processed per annum. In 2013, Altonorte was acquired by Glencore. Recently due to various new environmental regulations in Chile, Altonorte has evolved to new standards of operation in order to reach the vision of becoming a World Class Smelter. This paper describes the path followed to improve safety, environmental performance, process capacity, reliability, and productivity. The foundation for the growth and success in Altonorte is our People. Employee engagement and branding of our cultural journey is what allows Altonorte to face the future with the certainty of becoming a World Class Smelter. INTRODUCTION Altonorte is located in Antofagasta, the mining capital in the north of Chile and is the last smelter built in Chile practically completed with second hand equipment. The biggest technological change in Altonorte occurred during the phase 3 expansion in 2003, where the old Reverberatory furnace was shut down and replaced by the biggest Noranda Reactor installed in the world. The vessel measures 5.3 m × 26m. ºAdditionally, this project contemplated a new rotary dryer, three (3) new Peirce Smith converters, new anode furnaces and a new Acid plant. The nominal capacity was to treat 816.000 tons of new concentrate per year. In 2008, a new expansion phase was implemented where a new double absorption acid plant replaced the oldest acid plant. Bottlenecks such as blowing capacity and oxygen availability were solved installing a new air blower and a new contract was negotiated with our oxygen supplier to increase oxygen availability up to 683 tpd. This improvement defined the current nominal capacity of 1.100.000 ton of new concentrate per year. Current process description All concentrates are received by trucks directly from domestic mines or from the Antofagasta international port in cases of imported concentrates; the concentrate warehouse has a capacity of 25 kt where the blend is prepared to feed the smelter.

"The metamorphosed mineralized Archean Bourlamaque batholith, dated at 2710 +-54 Ma, is a homogeneous body, composed mainly of quartz diorite; it is cut by late dioritic, mafic and aplitic dykes, and contains metasomatized ultramafic xenoliths. A geochemical investigation confirms the calc-alkaline affinity of the batholith, and the REE profiles are similar (Lal Yb = 3.9 to 8.1) to those of the intermediate to felsic metavolcanic rocks at Val d'Or into which the batholith was intruded and to those of the calc-alkaline members of the Blake River Group at Rouyn.Gold distribution within the batholith is heterogeneous and anomalous. Although the background Au content of the batholith is estimated to be 3.2 ppb Au by RNAA , the estimated median gold content of the batholith is 10 pp b (with P84 =32 and PI 6=3.1 ppb), much higher than that of ""normal"" granites (I to 5 ppb A u). The gold mineralization exhibits a close relationship with shear zones (e.g. Belmoral Mine) or with diorite dykes (e.g. Sullivan, Perron and Courvan mines).The following sequence of geological events is proposed: (I) pretectonic emplacement of the batholith, which is cogenetic with its volcanic host rocks; (2) regional metam orphism and deformation with localized shearing; and (3) hydrothermal alteration and quartz veining. We conclude that: (1) the Bourlamaque batholith is a gold-enriched intrusion, and (2) the determination of average gold content may be an effective method f or distinguishing ""sterile"" intrusions from those with potentials for gold mineralization.RESUMELe batholite archéen minéralise de Bourlamaque, daté de 2710+-54 Ma, est une intrusion homogène, constituée principalement de diorite quartzique, qui a été recoupée par des dykes tardifs de diorite, d'aplite et de composition mafique. L 'étude géochimique confirme le caractère calco-alcalin du bath olite et les profits des ETR sont semblables (La/ Yb=3.9 a8.1) a ceux des volcanites intermédiaires afe tsiques de la région de Val d'Or dans lesquelles le batholite fait intrusion et à ceux des unites calco-alcalines du Groupe de Blake Ri ver a Rouyn. La distribution de Au dans le batholite est à la fois anomale et hétérogène. Bien que le bruit de fond du batholite ait été estime à 3.2 ppb A u par AANR, sa médiane a été estimée a10 ppb Au (avec P84=32 et PI6= 3.1 ppb) , ce qui est nettement plus élevé que la valeur des roches granitoides ""normales"" donnée dans la littérature (1 a 5 ppb A u). Dans la batholite, la minéralisation aurifère est intimement associée aux zones de cisaillement (e.g. mine Belmoral) au aux dykes de diorite (e.g. mines Sullivan, Perron et Courvan).La séquence des évènements géologiques suivante est proposée: (1) emplacement pre-tectonique du batholite, lequel est cogenetique avec les roches volcaniques encaissantes; (2) deformation et metamorphisme regional avec des cisaillements tectoniques locaux; et (3) altération hydrothermale et développement des veines de quartz. "Tills work is related with the production of tiles using wastes from mining and metallurgical industry of Hidalgo State, as raw material. These wastes present a majority particle size (60 %), minor than 53 m (mesh 270, in Tyler Series) with the following composition; 70.01 % wt. of Si02, 12.82 % wt. of Ah03, 3.80 % wt. of Fe, 0.70 % wt. of Mn, 3.98 % wt. ofK20, 3.34 % wt. of CaO, 2.50 % wt. ofNa20, 0.04 % wt. of Zn, 0.026 % wt. of Pb, 56 grams per ton of Ag and 0.6 grams per ton of Au. In this work, the partial results and experimental conditions for the preparation of some composites to produce tiles are shown. The composite that offers the best results in productions of tiles was that with 66.67 % wt. of mining waste, 26.67 % wt. of red mud and 6.67 % wt. of black mud.IntroductionTo now, mining activities carried out during more than 457 years in Hidalgo State, Mexico; has lead a great volume of wastes; which can be classified into different types, having among the more common; Acid mining water, solid transport water, elements in radical form, abandoned minerals without processing and processing minerals wastes known as burrows, being these the most abundant in the region counting with an approximated volume of 110 million of tons, presenting a fine particle size that can affect population health during windy epochs [1 -4].Form metallurgical point of view, is well known that a fundamental characterization study it is necessary to know the viability of reusing or recycling of these wastes. According this, these residues can also be considered as raw materials in other economical activities, due its Si, Fe, AI, Ca, Na and P oxides contents, its mineralogy and the distribution of chemical elements in the primary and secondary phases [1,2,5,6]."

CONTRARY to what seems to be the general impression, the island of Cyprus was not named for the metal copper, but the reverse was the case. The origin of the name is entirely lost. The ancient city Kition, the birthplace of Zeno, is supposed to be the same as Kittim mentioned in Gen. x, 4; Jeremiah ii, 10 and Ezekiel xxvii, 6, and Josephus states that this name seems to have been applied to the city and also to the island itself. Cyprus is 50 miles off the coast of Asia Minor. The mountains on the mainland are plainly visible across the sea from where I write six miles from the shore of Morphou bay. It is 200 miles from Joppa the port of Jerusalem, and 250 from Port Said. The shape of the island is like a lizard, the tail pointing directly toward the old city of Antioch near the northeastern corner of the Mediterranean. The island was once heavily timbered. Among the great trees the cedars were said to even excel the famous cedars of Lebanon. The Odyssey refers to it as the "sweet smelling island" and makes other references. But the continual wars of every race and age completely stripped it of its timber, and for centuries it has been woefully barren. There are two ranges of mountains. One borders the north coast and runs out in a slim rocky ridge forming the "tail." The other occupies the southwestern part of the island, the highest point being Mt. Troodes 6600 ft. high, sometimes called Mt. Olympus. Whether or not it be the Mt. Olympus, anyway right around there the ancient gods and godesses frequently "started things." These peaks are in plain sight 10 miles south from where I live.

"IntroductionThis paper on the kata thermometer is issued by the Bureau of Mines on account of the general interest in this instrument and the fact that it is frequently used in studies of mine ventilation conditions with regard to comfort and health of miners. It has been used in the studies being conducted along this line by the Bureau of Mines on the effects of high temperatures and humidities of air in mine working on the comfort conditions, as well as in studies of atmospheric conditions in mine, railway and vehicular tunnels.The study of the various physiological responses of the human body to different degrees of temperature combined with different percentages of relative humility in still and in moving air, now being conducted at the Pittsburgh experiment station of the bureau in the research laboratory of the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers, cooperating with the Bureau of and the U. S. Public Health Service, presents an added opportunity of investigating the instruments that have been devised to measure atmospheric conditions as they affect the comfort and health of human beings.The ordinary mercury thermometer, as pointed out by Heberden3 almost hundred years ago is a very inadequate instrument for measuring the physiological effects of atmospheric conditions. It merely accounts for that part of the body heat lost by raliation and convection, while as a matter of fact greater part of the body heat resulting from the metabolic process within the body is eliminated by means of evaporation from the surface of the body."

The olfactory system (sense of smell) is crucial to the ability of fish to avoid predators, recognize kin, and synchronize reproduction (Baldwin et al. 2003). Copper (Cu) has been shown to impair olfaction in juvenile freshwater life stages of salmonids (including Pacific salmon and trout) in some laboratory experiments; and in the United States, public concerns have been expressed that current regulatory criteria for Cu in fresh water are not adequately protective of olfactory function in salmonids (e.g., OSU 2007; Pearson 2007). These concerns have largely been raised because some Cu concentrations that have caused olfactory impairment in salmonids in the laboratory are less than Cu concentrations that have been shown to reduce salmonid survival, growth, or reproduction (the effects endpoints that are typically considered in deriving ambient water quality criteria). However, two important and interrelated points that must be considered: (1) freshwater Cu criteria are "driven" by the sensitivities of several invertebrate species that are more sensitive than the olfactory impairment threshold in salmonids when (2) the influence of water chemistry on Cu bioavailability is properly considered in deriving Cu criteria. Bioavailability refers to the ability of various chemical forms of Cu to interact with receptors on the surface(s) of organisms and thus directly cause toxicity or uptake by the organisms. The toxicity of Cu and other metals to aquatic organisms is a function of water chemistry. For example, acute Cu toxicity in fresh water generally decreases as pH, water hardness (Ca2+ and Mg2+), alkalinity, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations increase (Meyer et al. 2007). The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has recommended hardness-based freshwater aquatic life criteria for Cu and other metals since the 1980s (e.g., USEPA 1985); and hardness-based metals criteria decrease (i.e., become more restrictive) as water hardness decreases. More recently, the USEPA has recommended freshwater aquatic life criteria for Cu based on the biotic ligand model (BLM; USEPA 2007), which accounts for the influence of multiple water chemistry parameters, including DOC, pH, alkalinity, Ca2+, Mg2+, and several other cations and anions. The BLM-based Cu criteria generally decrease as DOC concentration, pH, alkalinity, and water hardness decrease. Because DOC has a stronger influence on Cu bioavailability than water hardness, hardness-based and BLM-based Cu criteria can differ considerably. For example, in water that has low DOC and high hardness, the hardness-based Cu criterion would be relatively high (because it is driven by the high hardness) but the BLM-based Cu criterion would be relatively low (because it is driven by the low DOC). Thus, any evaluation of the protectiveness of Cu criteria against a given effect, such as olfactory impairment, must properly account for the chemistry of the exposure water. Meyer et al. (2013) compiled data on Cu-induced olfactory impairment and olfactory-induced behavioral effects from tests in which BLM parameters were measured. They demonstrated that the USEPA's BLM-based freshwater life criteria for Cu are protective against olfactory impairment, because it adequately accounts for water chemistry (whereas the USEPA's hardness-based Cu criteria are not consistently protective). Olfactory impairment by Cu is now receiving increased attention in Canada and Europe (e.g., Wall 2013; Stang 2013). Accordingly, in this paper we have expanded the analysis of Meyer et al. (2013) to consider copper guidelines from various other countries and whether these guidelines are protective against olfactory impairment.

The objective of the paper was application of bacterial leaching on two brown coal samples from locality Mine Druzba, seams Antonin and Josef (Sokolov brown coal basin, Czech republic). Based on the results of bacterial leaching and petrologic analyses of the given samples, it is possible to say that application of bacterial leaching gived good results. Applying bacterial leaching it is possible to remove from 34% to 47% of total sulphur and from 45% to 64% of pyritic sulphur from the coal.

"Le gisement Isle-Dieu est situé sur le flanc sud de l'anticlinal de Galinée. La stratigraphie locale comprend, de bas en haut, la rhyolite du Groupe du Lac Watson surmontée par le basalte du Groupe de Wabassee. Un horizon repère, siliceux et sulfure, d'origine sédimentaire, appelé ""Tuffite Clef', est présent au sommet du Groupe du Lac Watson et pend à 45° vers le sud.Le gisement Isle-Dieu est constitué par une lentille qui recoupe, en partie, la ""Tuffite Clef"". Elle est séparée en deux trorçons par un dyke de tonalite. Les données obtenues à partir des forages effectues à travers la rhyolite sous-jacente permettent de définir les zonations chimiques et pétrographiques de la cheminée d’altération.Ces transformation minéralogiques et chimiques sont caractérisées par un enrichissement en MgO, Fe2O3, MnO et un appauvrissement en CaO, SiO2 et Na2O. La zonation spatiale de ces altérations permet de mettre en évidence la géométrie et l'extension des conduits hydrothermaux. L'épaisseur maximale des sulfures massifs au sein de la lentille est en étroite relation avec l’importance des zones d'altération. Les patrons de variations chimiques dénotent une orientation préférentielle WNW des conduits hydrothermaux. Les parties les plus altérées et les plus déformées présentent localement de fortes variations positives en Zr, Nb, et terres-rares; ces concentrations sont vraisemblablement imputables a /' enrichissement résultant de la diminution du volume lors de l'altération.L'étude pétrographique montre que la porosité et la perméabilité du milieu ont joué un rôle important dans la circulation des fluides car les roches de la cheminée présentent des phénomènes de dévitrification, de bréchification et de microfracturation très prononces. La nature magnésienne de certaines chlorites et la perméabilité accrue du milieu semblent en accord avec le modelé propose par Roberts et Reardon, ( 1978 )"

SuperLig® materials are capable of individually separating Rh, Pd, and/or Pt in highly purified form (99.95 to 99.99%) from a variety of chloride-based feed streams in a single stage operation. The hydrophillicity and associated kinetics of the supported materials allow for operation at relatively high flow rates of both loading and elution in a packed bed format. Pilot and commercial systems have been operated with Rh, Pd, and/or Pt present in the feed from single digit ppm (mg/l) to tens of g/l. A dual SuperLig® system for one pass Au(CN)2- separation followed by Cu and CN- recovery for CN- recycle has also been tested up to a pilot level,

The world's largest grinding mill operates at the Cadia Hill Mine in Australia. Svedala Industries supplied the 12.2-m- (40-ft-) diam, 20-MW Cadia gearless, semiautogenous grinding mill (SAG). This was a leap of more than 40% above the largest operating SAG mill. This article reviews the significant items involved in the development, design, manufacture, installation and operation of this mill. Description of the Cadia project The Cadia Hill Mine is located 25 km (15 miles) southwest of Orange, in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia. The mining lease covers about 3,100 hm2 (7,660 acres) of the Cadia Valley. The Cadia deposit is a large, homogeneous, low-grade, porphyry-type, gold-copper resource. Current reserves stand at 202 Mt (222 million st), grading 0.73 g/t (0.02 oz/st) gold and 0.17% copper. They contain 146.2 t (4.7 million oz) of gold and 347 Kt (382,500 st) of copper. The operation consists of openpit mining and ore processing to produce gold bullion and a gold/copper concentrate. The operation processes 17 Mt/a (19 millon stpy) of ore to produce 91 kt/a (100,300 stpy) of concentrate and 9.1 t/a (293,000 oz/year) of gold. The plant operates two 12-hour shifts a day and had a targeted availability of 94%. The plant facilities include a copper concentrator, o water supply system, an openpit mine, tailings pipeline and dam, and a concentrate pipeline and dewatering facility located in Blayney, about 35 km (22 miles) from the concentrator. Significant features of the process plant include o primary crusher and stockpile, a reclaim conveyor system feeding, the Cadia SAG mill (Figs. 1 and 2) and two 6.7-m- (22-ft-) diam ball mills (Fig. 3). A portion of the gold is extracted in a gravity circuit. The balance is extracted with the copper in the flotation section of the plant. Concentrate is thickened and piped about 35 km (22 miles) to the filter plant and rail loadout facility located in Blayney. Tailings are pumped to a tailings dam and process water is reclaimed from the tailings dam. The water system is designed to control and capture available runoff from local creeks, and to store these waters in dams and weirs. In addition, a major portion of the water for the process plant is treated effluent from the city of Orange and a smaller portion from Blayney Mill selection. The low-grade ore posed a dilemma for Cadia. To achieve a satisfactory economic operation, large-scale processing was required. The selection of the mills, equal to the largest designed and operated at the time, gave a plant configuration consisting of two 11.1- x 5.8-m (36- x 19-ft) SAG mills and three 6.1- x 9.1-m (20 x 30-ft) ball mills. This configuration did not provide the most satisfactory economic model for the project. A review of the single line configuration indicated that a significant reduction in the overall capital cost of the plant could be achieved by increasing the size of the mills and reducing the quantity. In view of the developments and recent interest in recovering heavy oil , this report was prepared to present general information on more than 2,000 heavy oil reservoirs in more than 1,500 fields in 26 states . Information given on each heavy - oil deposit includes the following items : Field and formation , location , average or range of depth , average API gravity of oil , average thickness of formation , areal extent of field , total productive wells drilled in field , discovery date of field , field status in 1963 , cumulative production to Jan. 1 , 1964 , and all known types of secondary - recovery operations initiated ( active and terminated ) in the reservoirs . The geographical location of heavy oil accumulations in the United States is shown by a map , and a brief discussion of 14 different areas is given in the text . As of Jan. 1 , 1964 , 75 percent of the heavy oil reservoirs in the United States had produced more than 10 billion barrels of oil and are estimated to contain over 90 billion barrels of oil in place . It is also estimated that if the deposits which have had little or no production history , such as the one in Missouri , were included , the total remaining heavy oil in place would be in excess of 150 billion barrels . To find economical ways of recovering this vast reserve of heavy oil , industry is developing technology in several types of thermal - recovery methods . Some of the general considerations and more suitable limitations in selecting a prospect to study for thermal - recovery techniques are : Lithology , depth , viscosity of reservoir fluids , gravity of oil , reservoir thickness , oil in place , and permeability and porosity .

The Bureau of Mines developed hypereutectic aluminum-silicon alloys which 11.7.d better mechanical properties than the unmodified hypereutectic alloy. A commercial aluminum-20 weight-percent silicon LIr alloy was selected as a ary base for improvement. The primary silicon. grains were reduced from ASTM 4-5 to ASTM 8.5 by the use of phosphorus and phosphorus compounds. The remaining eutectic matrix was refined by sodium metal additions of 0.2 weight-percent. Solid solution strengthening of the alpha aluminum was obtained by adding 2 percent copper and 0.5 percent magnesium. Also, 1 percent nickel was added to harden the alloy. Optimum thermal treatment consisted of a solution treatment for 10 hour:, at 480° C with hot water quench, followed by aging for 6 hours at 175° C. The final alloy exhibited a Rockwell B hardness of 75 ±2 in the heat-treated condition. The ultimate tensile strength was 39,5O0 psi with no recordable elongation. The coefficient of linear thermal expansion was 20.4 x 10-6 per °C in the temperature range 20° to 300° C. No wear resistance data were collected.

The Altair process digests ilmenite concentrate in high-chloride HC1 solution, with complete dissolution of titanium and iron. The Fe(III) ions are reduced to the ferrous form, and the solution is cooled to produce crystalline ferrous chloride. Titanium is transferred by solvent extraction into a purified, concentrated Ti stream, which is spray-hydrolyzed to produce TiO2 hydrate. The hydrate is further calcined with additives to generate a high-quality pigment. All the chloride streams are recycled. In the original flowsheet, the iron chloride is pyrohydrolyzed by spray roasting to regenerate 18% HCl, which is subsequently converted to HC1 gas and water by pressure-swing distillation. A modified flowsheet includes an alternative to iron chloride spray roasting, producing more concentrated HCl and decreasing the amount of solution to be distilled. Improvements in digestion, solvent extraction and final pigment production are also introduced. A 100 t/y pilot plant is being built and will test the new concepts and confirm the overall water, acid and impurity balances of the process.

A method was developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines for evaluating viscosity data from slurries obtained in leaching sinters from the lime soda sinter process for extracting alumina from aluminous silicates. The logarithm of the viscosity was observed to be a linear function with time. The slope of the plotted line provides a means for evaluating viscosity behavior in a lime soda sinter blurry and also a means for comparing gelation characteristics directly with other variables in the lime soda sinter process. This report presents one aspect of a continuing study by the Bureau of Mines on methods for treating siliceous aluminum ores. It is one of the many programs of the Bureau concerned with conservation, development, and use of our domestic minerals resources. Previous investigations of lime soda processes, both by the Bureau4-7/ and industrial concerns, have demonstrated that sintered materials containing CaO, Na2O, A1203, and S102 in various combinations exhibit a tendency to gel or set when mixed with water or other extraction solutions. Gelling prevents satisfactory recovery of alumina and in extreme cases prevents operation of an extraction plant.
